n November 22nd, Philip Hammond delivered his second budget as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Declaring support for the UK’s housing market, Hammond announced the Government “will commit a total of at least £44bn capital funding, loans and guarantees to support our housing market” continuing aid for development and infrastructure across the nation.

The housing crisis is one of the biggest challenges faced by Britain, with many struggling to get their foot on the housing ladder. First-time buyers benefited from Hammond’s stamp duty cut and, despite sceptic’s criticisms around house price inflation, Hammond has defended his policy stating that abolishing stamp duty will increase deposit-saving incentives.

While house-building and homeownership took a front seat in this autumn’s budget announcement, the skills shortage was also addressed in a bid to invest in education with a focus on maths and technology.

The skills shortage across the UK is well-documented, particularly within the construction industry. However, this deficit is reported to be most severe within the engineering and manufacturing sector. In this issue, on page 26 Richard Allen, General Manager at voestalpine Metsec, explains how the company is approaching the lack of skills from within its sector, while on page 22 Designing Buildings Wiki looks at the lack of knowledge across the construction industry.

Sir Robert McAlpine first contractor verified under BRE’s ELS standard Sir Robert McAlpine has become the first contractor to be verified under BRE’s Ethical Labour Sourcing (ELS) standard. BRE developed the standard BES 6002 in February this year, in response to the 2015 Modern Slavery Act. Sir Robert McAlpine is already leading the sector in its approach to sustainability and ethical sourcing. Paul Hamer, Chief Executive of Sir Robert McAlpine, comments: “Forced labour can have no place on Britain’s construction projects; it is an unseen and evil practice that must be stopped. Our business is working incredibly hard to demonstrate that Sir Robert McAlpine will not tolerate it.”

ecobuild partners with the CCS

The CCS will be working with ecobuild over the forthcoming months to develop a set of criteria for this year’s event to demonstrate its considerate credentials, in line with the CCS’ Code of Considerate Practice. Martin Hurn, Managing Director of ecobuild owner Futurebuild Events, said:“We are really excited to have the scheme partnering with ecobuild 2018.We will be using the scheme’s code as an industry standard to help ensure the event is achieving high standards in key areas such as being an inclusive and respectful event for everyone and minimising the environmental impact of the event.”

RIBA responds to Budget 2017

RIBA has responded to the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Autumn Budget to Parliament.

RIBA President, Ben Derbyshire, said:“I’m pleased and relieved that at a time of huge challenges and after weeks of speculation the Chancellor has recognised the need for more radical action to address the housing crisis.The RIBA has been calling for the housing borrowing cap to be lifted and for recognition of the importance of investment in infrastructure in addressing the housing crisis for many years. I’m pleased that the Government has listened to the RIBA and other voices.”

gpad london delivers prime office space BCO award-winning London architectural practice, gpad london, has completed a high-end office refurbishment of CBRE Global Investors’ Seven Dials Warehouse at 42 Earlham Street, Covent Garden, London. The Grade II Listed Victorian warehouse has been sensitively refurbished and now has 40,00ft2 of prime office space over five floors.

The ambitious project created an expansive 3000ft2 roof terrace boasting panoramic views as well as an enhanced street presence, remodelled reception area and high-end workspaces.

The design highlight is discovered on the fifth floor – a suspended folded steel staircase designed on a bespoke basis by gpad london which appears to levitate above

the office floor. Housed within the existing glass roof lantern, the feature staircase creates an intervention that connects the existing fifth-floor office to the new roof terrace.

He will be based in Edinburgh.

Philip, a graduate of HeriotWatt University and a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, has 30 years of extensive professional experience in commercial building surveying and project management.

Lippe Architects + Planners has announced the appointment of Stuart Naysmith as its new Managing Director. Stuart is taking over from William Lippe, who established the company in 1985. Stuart, who held the previous role of Technical Director, originally joined the practice in 1993 and, along with William Lippe, has been instrumental in its steady growth; now in its 32nd year.

Industry Updates Reminders of the warehouse’s rich heritage have been celebrated throughout gpad’s design, with original features sensitively retained and restored with an industrial-luxe aesthetic.

The Earlham Street entrance has been given a new presence, with large glazed windows, sympathetic street signage and the facade returned to its former raw brickwork.The building entrance has been reconfigured to create an enlarged reception area with an intimate reception desk and breakout seating areas.The black metal Flos Infra-Structure lighting system (which is adaptable as usage changes) provides a visual connection of spaces through the lower and upper reception areas.

To inject character and provide a sense of place, areas of exposed original brick contrast with clean white plasterboard ceilings and meticulously detailed exposed services. Contemporary elements have been brought into the workspace floors giving an interesting juxtaposition with earlier features.The existing suspended vaulted ceilings and chilled beams were removed, increasing the floor-to-ceiling head height. New air conditioning FCUs have been concealed within Optimus Prime-inspired (Transformers) galvanised steel encasements.The lighting provides a striking visual

Christopher Christophi, an Associate in Perkins+Will’s London studio, has won the BCO (British Council for Offices) NextGen Rising Star Award for London and the South East, surpassing some of the industry’s most outstanding young professionals. Plans to create an accreditation to protect and support the growth of the roofing industry were announced at the annual National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Suppliers Conference on 21st November.The certification, the result of a collaboration between the NFRC and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), aims to improve efficiency, upskill the workforce, encourage the use of new technology and attract new talent.

The FM Group has announced that it has successfully secured funding to convert Dalnair Castle, a 19thcentury Scottish Baronial mansion, into 10 luxurious apartments with the support of a £3.3m property development facility provided by specialist bank, Aldermore.

This title stems from Azurmendi’s commitment to sustainability; both through the environmentally-friendly materials that have been used to construct the building itself and also through the renewable technologies that have been specified for the building’s operations.

Supporting the sustainable design, Architect, Naia Eguino, worked closely with the Azurmendi team to design a space enclosed by breathtaking natural surroundings with sustainability and material diversity at its core. Stone, wood and iron were the primary materials selected for the project. Azurmendi required materials that combined tradition and modernity with a linear structure to create an atmosphere that evokes warmth and serenity.

Renewable requests While the envelope and internal fittings of Azurmendi have sustainable origins, the technological features of the build were also specified with renewables in mind.

Photovoltaic specialist, Onyx Solar, was approached to provide over 200m2 of photovoltaic glass to the Azurmendi project, which was integrated into the large-scale curtain walling and rooftop skylights. The project, in fact, is considered to be one of the most outstanding photovoltaic integration solutions in the whole of Europe.

The low-emissivity (or low-e) glass used is made of amorphous silicon and features a semi-transparency degree of 20%. This type of glass enables the passage of daylight into the interior while it filters out as much as 99% of the ultraviolet radiation and 95% of infrared light, thus preventing harm to the interior furniture, to diners or to plants, and the greenhouse effect which is so common in glass-covered buildings.

The skylight and the curtain wall total an installed power capacity of 21kWp and generate approximately 16,500kWh per year while preventing the release of 11 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Alongside photovoltaics, Azurmendi reuses rainwater for the garden, greenhouses and toilets; takes advantage of natural daylight to reduce the use of artificial light and controls temperature and ventilation to reduce the need for air conditioning.

One of the world’s biggest and boldest sustainable tourism projects has officially opened. Bioregional’s One Planet Living framework has played a leading role in enabling Villages Nature Paris to achieve its high ambitions for being in harmony with nature and the planet.

Sustainable ambitions Bioregional first became involved with this family-oriented resort, sited three miles from Disneyland Paris, back in 2005 during the early planning stages. It has supported it ever since, regularly surveying its progress against the challenging targets set out in Villages Nature Paris’ own One Planet Action Plan.

Bioregional will continue to monitor the sustainability of the resort now that it has opened to the public, with plans to eventually attract more than a million visitors a year.

The project now offers 868 cottages and apartments set in a car-free landscape of lakes, woodlands, meadows and gardens 20 miles from the heart of the French capital.

illages Nature Paris offers a complete change of scene to help guests reconnect with the things that truly matter. Visitors will feel in harmony with nature in this extraordinary green village with its cottages and apartments by the lakeside or deep in the forest.

Comprising five immersive ‘worlds’, Villages Nature Paris is the result of a collaboration between Euro Disney SCA and the Pierre et Vacances Center Parcs Group and proposes a new way of approaching a holiday.

Here, the extraordinary is all around; nature and architecture merge together to form a unique world. This is a location designed to bring discoveries and sensations to fill holidays with new experiences.

Other sustainable features of this project include: Major works to create habitat and enhance biodiversity on site – planting 28,800 trees and 430,000 other plants including 2.5 miles of lake banks planted with natural vegetation.

Many of the buildings have extensive green walls and roofs.

Less than 10% of the entire 259 ha area, formerly low-biodiversity, intensively cultivated farmland, is being been built on.

More than 600 jobs created including 75% from Seine et Marne, plus a further 1600 jobs supported in the local area.

Extensive use of timber, a carbon-storing material, in the visitor accommodation and the Aqualagon, with all of the timber used in construction coming from certified managed forests in Europe.The Aqualagon also used low-carbon concrete.

Villages Nature Paris has a frequent bus service to the nearby Marne-la-Vallée railway station, served by high-speed trains across France and beyond, and by Paris’ own RER suburban network. So visitors can easily travel from hundreds of miles away by public transport, and also use it to visit the French capital.The resort has plans for a large share of its visitors to travel without using their cars.

ut a recent study of the 3.5 million people a year, from every part of the industry, who create, access and share knowledge on Designing Buildings Wiki, suggests there is a worrying and widening construction knowledge gap.

Six million pieces of data were analysed, giving a unique insight into how construction knowledge is created and used.The resulting

report, ‘Fit for purpose? Big data reveals the construction knowledge gap’, includes a series of never-before-seen maps which have serious implications for the industry.

The first map shows the relationships between the subjects covered by the 5500 articles on Designing Buildings Wiki.The proximity of subjects on the map shows how closely related they are, and their colour and

size shows how much has been written about them.This exposes a clear bias for the creation of knowledge around traditional ‘academic’ subjects, such as theory, research and innovation and case studies, as well as design and products).

The second map is an analysis of 724,000 users during a two-month period, showing what subjects they actually read. This reveals that practitioners are much more interested in practical ‘project’ subjects such as construction management, appointments, procurement, contracts and payment than they are in the ‘academic’ subjects the industry writes much about. They are looking for straightforward guidance to help them with their daily work, and this is not what the industry is providing. This difference between what people want and what they get is a clear knowledge gap and it suggests industry resources are being misdirected.

The study then looked at how long people spend reading different subjects.

This suggests people spend longer reading the ‘project’ subjects than the ‘academic’ subjects, which is surprising, as academic research tends to be much longer than practical guidance.

Crucially, the data shows that people are only prepared to spend around three minutes trying to find the answers they need, then they click back and look somewhere else. So, the knowledge that is buried at the end of long research papers is unlikely to be found.

The industry needs to get grips with this as a matter of urgency as it is going to get worse.This year, the number of internet searches carried out on mobile devices exceeded those carried out on traditional computers for the first time. People who are on the move, looking at a small screen, do not want a long read.

The iGeneration, glued to their phones, expect to get access to the things they need quickly, and without having to pay for them.

This is the new reality. If the industry continues to publish knowledge in the form of long PDFs sitting behind paywalls, the iGeneration will look somewhere else and may end up with the wrong answer.

British Standards are an example of how potentially serious this is.We rely on British Standards heavily, both in our specifications and in Building Regulations.Approved Document B refers to 99 different British Standards, and just one of those – BS 9999 – is more than 400 pages long and costs £380.Whilst some companies may have the resources to buy and digest this amount of knowledge, most do not. If we expect people to use critical information, it needs to be made freely available and easy to apply.

The study then analysed the demographics of the people using construction knowledge. This shows a clear gender gap but, interestingly, it is only apparent after the mid-twenties. Before that, things are relatively equal, and if those young women can be encouraged to stay in the industry, this could be a positive sign for the future.

The demographics also show four times as much activity from people under 45 as from people over 45. This may reflect a greater need for knowledge by younger people or may reveal a distrust of online sources by older people.

The final set of data looked at the locations of knowledge consumers.This confirmed the dominance of the capital, with three times as much knowledge consumption per person in London compared to the rest of the UK. In part, this may be because the industry is concentrated in the South East, with London accounting for 22% of total UK construction output. But it may also be because of the draw London has on 25- to 34-year-olds, who account for 24% of the population, compared with just 14% in the rest of the UK.

The report closes by making a series of recommendations that would help the industry catch up with the changing world around it: More practical guidance is needed to help professionals understand how to perform everyday project activities Practitioners should be encouraged, supported and rewarded for sharing their knowledge Research needs to draw out useful findings and explain how they can be applied Strategic leadership is needed to ensure construction knowledge is targeted, comprehensive, accessible and easy to use.

The report concludes that there is a lack of strategic leadership in the industry and, as a result, there is little collaboration or coordination of construction knowledge. Too many resources are targeted at ‘academic’ research when practitioners are actually looking for straightforward practical guidance to help them do their jobs. This is the result of an entrenched top-down funding model, set up to attract bids from niche researchers. There is little support for more demand-driven general guidance about the practicalities of the industry that people clearly need.

The rise of off-site manufacturing Adrian Doyle from McMullen Facades, part of the Lakesmere Group, takes a closer look at how the development of off-site manufacturing techniques is reaching new heights in the high-rise residential market.

he many benefits that off-site construction can offer have long been recognised and yet its role in the housing market continues to be much debated. With the industry now facing challenges from the uncertainty of a post-Brexit Britain to the very real issues of the housing crisis and construction skills shortage, off-site construction is once again back in the spotlight following the publication of the influential Farmer Review, the draft London Housing Strategy and the recent report by the London Assembly.

Uniting the industry on and off site



    

The environmental benefits of off-site in terms of reducing waste and carbon emissions is widely known but it’s important to remember that much of this is diluted if products have to be delivered from overseas. The ongoing support of UKbased manufacturers like McMullen through early engagement and the proactive, rather than reactive, specification of off-site elements is therefore vital to ensuring the continuous development of the sector.

New career opportunities are also being created through the establishment and expansion of factories and manufacturing facilities which, unusually for the construction industry, offer a permanent place of work.

As a move away from traditional building methods, off-site can bring tremendous benefits but it also requires significant change, not only in terms of how projects are designed and products specified but, more importantly, how they are financed. Such a sea-change has been the sticking point for many but behind the rhetoric and debate, in manufacturing facilities and on construction sites across the UK, important progress in product innovation and project delivery has already been made. The skills shortage in the UK is well-documented, with the shortage most acute in the engineering and manufacturing sector. Too few trainees are entering the industry from education and, with an ageing workforce nationally, the growth of the sectors are at risk of being stunted by a chronic lack of skills, explains Richard Allen, General Manager at voestalpine Metsec.

In fact, the future forecast is that more than a quarter of a million people need to enter the workforce per year up to 2024 to keep up with demand. As there is a limited pool of talent available, engineering and manufacturing firms need to address the shortage themselves.

Whilst many companies have looked overseas to source workers in order to combat this issue, the shortage could be exacerbated by Brexit, meaning detailed and well-thought-out training and apprenticeships have never been more important.

Apprentices Metsec invests time and resources into training both new and existing staff to ensure that we meet our needs and those of our clients. It recognises the significant contribution that can be made by a well-trained and proficient workforce and also the benefits gained by the individual from enhanced confidence in their

job role.Training and development of all employees is, therefore, pivotal to the success of the business. Running a comprehensive apprenticeship programme at our Black Country headquarters, we’ve employed and trained more than 50 apprentices since setting up the scheme back in 1998.The company still remains one of the few engineering companies to run an in-house scheme.

Metsec has a business goal to derive 20% of its workforce from ‘homegrown’, fully trained apprentices by 2020. Aligned to its strategic growth plan, the apprentice scheme sets out a six-year path for new recruits from the age of 16 upwards. In terms of usability, the intercom system means people will never have to miss that important visitor and are made aware of who has visited even when they are not there. Invest in quality products: Every job, no matter how large or small, needs to be approached with confidence that the roofing products are of genuine quality and that their warranties are robust.Top-quality roofing materials such as natural slate or clay tiles for pitched roofs, and premium liquid or bituminous membranes for flat roofs, can turn a roof from the ordinary into the extraordinary. The building material of the modern age is aluminium. It is the second most widely specified metal in buildings after steel and used in all construction sectors from commercial buildings to domestic dwellings.The benefits of using aluminium are numerous and include durability, strength-to-weight ratio and sustainability. It is ductile, durable and non-toxic.Through the vision of an architect or designer, aluminium can give free rein to creativity, making it possible to create structures that cannot be made from wood, steel, plastics or expensive alternatives.

Un-adopted permeable paved parking areas discharge into the adopted road

The trade association Interpave has published a new case study showing how concrete block permeable paving provides a comprehensive sustainable drainage system (SuDS) for new housing developments without additional land-take.

F

leetwood Crescent is the 28home first phase of a new development in the Eastfield Area of Peterborough for award-winning housing association Cross Keys Homes.

It makes extensive use of concrete block permeable paving, reflecting Peterborough City Council’s desire to incorporate SuDS in developments. The estate road is a trial site for the adoption of permeable paving by the Local Highway Authority and will be adopted under the ‘Section 38’ process, and its performance monitored.

Storing rainwater on site The 0.87ha brownfield site – formerly a secondary school – has a 0.8m depth of made-up ground with underlying clay and sand, giving a low permeability. The drainage is designed to temporarily store rainwater runoff on site and remove pollutants before gradual discharge to an existing surface water sewer that eventually outfalls into a nearby watercourse.

The adopted estate road is ‘System C’ concrete block permeable paving with an impermeable membrane effectively forming a tank, due to the low soil permeability.

is restricted to ‘greenfield’ runoff rates by an orifice plate flow control chamber.

Surface water storage volumes on the site are designed to cater for rainfall events exceeding the one in 100-year storm, plus 30% allowance for climate change.

Un-adopted driveways next to dwellings and shared parking areas are also constructed in concrete block permeable paving, linked to the permeable road construction with pipes below the footpath.

Rainwater from all roofs drains into the adjacent driveway permeable paving via perforated diffuser pipes. Services are generally accommodated in ‘corridors’ within the footpaths, with an impermeable block paved road crossing.

Interpave technical guidance All the concrete block permeable paving has been designed and constructed in accordance with Interpave technical guidance (available from www.paving.org.uk).

This scheme demonstrates how concrete block permeable paved drives, parking and adopted roads on a typical new housing development can attenuate, store and treat runoff from all the hard surfaces without any additional land-take or other SuDS features. Addition of a simple orifice plate flow control protects the local sewer from overloading.

Predictable and reliable Following some 25 years of use in the UK and abroad, concrete block permeable paving has proved to be a predictable, reliable and low-cost SuDS technique. Its capability to attenuate water flow during rainfall for gradual discharge is well known.

But this principle is optimised for greater cost efficiency by considering distinct storage ‘compartments’ of permeable paving using straightforward flow control devices with an orifice – accurately sized and accessible for observation or adjustment if needed – on the outlet.

This technique enables water storage to be strategically deployed around a development within compartments, each with a flow control demonstrating compliance to local authorities as part of the SuDS design approval process.

Sustainable paving

By its very nature, concrete block permeable paving is uniquely placed to help meet requirements for SuDS on developments. Of course, hard surfaces are necessary on housing schemes anyway – whether for traffic, parking, pedestrians or play. But permeable paving also provides an inherent drainage system, addressing both flooding and pollution issues by attenuating and cleaning water runoff at source. This technology largely eliminates pipework, gulleys and manholes, and should cost less than conventional drainage. Concrete block permeable paving can simply infiltrate to the ground where conditions allow or collect water for transmission to other SuDS features along the ‘management train’ or to conventional drainage, as here.

A lesson in disabled access at Michael Tippett College While the traditional model for SEN (Special Educational Needs) school and college provision follows the mainstream example of classroom-based learning, Head Teacher of Michael Tippett School, Marilyn Ross, has very different ideas about what the students of the recentlyestablished Michael Tippett College in the London Borough of Lambeth actually need.

o, with a vacant former community centre on a separate site to utilise, Marilyn and the Michael Tippett team set about creating Michael Tippett College; a ground-breaking educational setting for young adults aged 19 to 25 with complex needs, physical disabilities, autism, SLD (Severe Learning Difficulties), challenging behaviour and PMLD (Profound Medical & Learning Difficulties).

Explains Marilyn: “The ethos behind the new college is to consider what our students can do and help them realise their full potential, rather than limiting opportunities by focusing on what they can’t do.

“However, in order to achieve that, we needed a building that was safe and accessible for all our students, not only to support the wide-ranging vocational and life skills curriculum we have put in place

but also to enable a varied programme of therapies and wellbeing activities.

“Working with a contractor that has the insight to truly understand those goals as well as the skills to deliver the right environment was vital and we knew from the outset that WLS was the right partner for us.”

Understanding the ethos WLS had already worked with Michael Tippett School to deliver a number of improvements at the main school building, including modifications to the performing arts space and installation of electronic gates to improve safeguarding. The works at the school had given the WLS team an understanding of the Michael Tippett ethos, enabling the company to contribute ideas and advise on remodelling and modification requirements for conversion of the former community building.

Disability Explains Marilyn: “The building had been out of use for several years before being given to us by Lambeth Council, so an initial refurbishment had already been done. This meant that the building was habitable but hadn’t been modified for use by disabled students.

“It was an ideal blank canvas for us to work with because it meant that we could make decisions about what we wanted to do at the site completely unhindered by the physical environment and then design the layout and facilities to suit the needs of our school community.”

The resulting project has been delivered

by WLS over three phases, beginning with the refurbishment of the existing building, followed by a phase two project to build an extension to open out the art room and create a therapy room, both of which can be accessed from within the school or via the outdoor areas. A planned phase three project to enable the training kitchen and catering facilities to be extended as a cafe open to the public has not yet started on site.

Comments Jason Jeffery from WLS:“It was clear from the beginning that Marilyn and her team wanted the new college to be very different from the conventional SEN environment. Our involvement from the concept stage has enabled us to input ideas for delivering the concept in the physical space, ensuring that the challenges of working with an existing building were overcome within the context of Equality Act compliance and the physical and wellbeing needs of students.”

It has also prioritised student wellbeing with a glazed wall and roof that allow natural light to flood into the building, giving a sense of openness and connecting the inside space to the

outdoors, as well as addressing the physical needs of visually impaired students.

“The design of the extension is just one example of how our partnership with WLS has helped us articulate our vision for the college within the fabric of our building,” Marilyn adds.

“At every point of the building design we have focused on supporting students’ wellbeing and their potential and WLS has fully integrated those principles into the design and build process.

“They are not just our contractor but have also acted in the role of consultant, design team and security specialist. As a result, we’ve been able to reduce the time and cost of the project while working with a single, accountable point of contact.”

The scheme involved significant remodelling of the space to enable the open-plan layout so central to the college’s ethos.As a result, teaching spaces can be used for a variety of purposes with trampolines folded out for rebound therapy sessions and yoga mats retrieved from cupboards for health and wellbeing sessions, for example.

WLS was also responsible for designing and installing the facilities, which include training areas for cookery and food preparation with a disabled access servery and cafe, carpentry and design and technology training facilities, and an art room.The fit-out also included the provision of bedrooms as respite accommodation with en-suite disabled access wetrooms.WLS even provided specialist wheelchairs that can be used in the shower as part of a turnkey solution designed to provide for every detail of the college’s requirements in a single package.

The contractor’s expertise in security systems meant that WLS was also able to advise on access systems, safeguarding provision and CCTV, and install all the

Merlin thinks Sadolin is magic for pub application Sadolin has been drafted in to help transform a pub into a stunning venue in the heart of the East Midlands with a range of superior woodcare solutions. FILAPROJECT assists Stone and Ceramic at The Star and Garter FILA has completed a project, with Stone and Ceramic, at The Star and Garter on Richmond Hill. The collection of luxury apartments and penthouses, by award-winning developer London Square, occupies a ‘show-stopping’ Grade II Listed building overlooking the Thames.

FILAPROJECT provided a surface cleaning regime for Stone and Ceramic’s installation of marble flooring and wall surfaces,

throughout bathrooms, master en-suites, hallways and living spaces.

Once the site of a fashionable hotel, with

guests including Charles Dickens, The Star and Garter building was designed by Sir Edwin Cooper for The Royal Star & Garter Home charity for servicemen injured in the First World War. The landmark building was sold by the charity to London Square in 2013. The meticulous restoration and conversion into 86 residences has received multiple awards, including two top accolades in the Evening Standard New Homes Awards.

Stone and Ceramic’s installation included exquisite honed and polished marble tiles and mosaics – from floors, skirtings and features, to walls, sills and vanity units – throughout the magnificent apartments. A range of subfloor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. have been used to prepare the subfloor of a store in Plymouth. Stopgap 850 Exterior floor levelling compound, Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane and Stopgap P131 primer were used on the 300m2 area. The regional F. Terrazzo tile flooring adds style at top Covent Garden restaurant According to the National Federation of Terrazzo, Marble and Mosaic Specialists, the popularity and specification of terrazzo tiles, which provide both high-performance flooring and stand the test of time with regards to fashion, is growing.

Federation Secretary, Brian James, comments: “A good example of the enduring popularity of terrazzo tile floors is here at Margot restaurant in the heart of Covent Garden. It helps bring together the quality and craftsmanship used

throughout the rest of the restaurant.”

“When shaping the interior of the restaurant, our aim was to amalgamate the rich heritage of Italian design,” adds Tom Strother of interior design studio, Fabled Design.

“The terrazzo tile flooring selected had both the colour and finish to complement the textures and the detail of our design.”

NFTMMS member Quiligotti, one of the UK’s largest terrazzo tile manufacturers, was chosen to supply the tile flooring throughout the restaurant.

“Our tiles are decorative yet hard-wearing so can be installed across a range of projects including restaurants, airports, train stations and retail stores,” explains Mike Moseley, Business Development Manager of Quiligotti.“Supplying tiles to meet the high-quality feel our client expected for this project was creative, challenging and, ultimately, very successful.”

The Quil-X Large tiles chosen are fixed like a traditional ceramic tile on adhesive and do not need to be ground and polished on completion. This saves money and reduces install time on site.

The tiles are manufactured in a range of nine colours incorporating large marble aggregates with a contrasting matrix of smaller aggregates. They have been specially developed to meet the growing demand for Palladian-style floors.

Polyflor heads to the seaside for fish and chip shop makeover F. Ball products prove ideal prescription for cancer centre project High-performance subfloor preparation products from F. Ball have been used as part of a major development to create a satellite cancer centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.The hospital needed a high-quality floor that is able to withstand heavy usage and vigorous cleaning while also having an aesthetically-pleasing finish.There was insufficient time to allow the subfloor to dry naturally, so two coats of Stopgap F78 onecomponent waterproof surface membrane were applied. Once the waterproof surface membrane was dry, contractors used F. Ball’s Stopgap Green Bag mixed with Stopgap 114 Liquid to create a smoothing underlayment to achieve a level surface ready for the application of F. Ball’s Styccobond F44 high bond strength adhesive.

Kalwall creates a flight of fancy Kalwall translucent cladding has been used in a stunning project at Raleigh-Durham Airport in North Carolina, designed by architect practice Clark Nexsen.

The brief was to transform/refurbish the ageing 1981 Terminal 1. Nicknamed the ‘blue box’, the original rectangular building was constructed using blue corrugated metal making it dark and uninviting while the inside was haphazard with a poor passenger flow.

In a £50m scheme, a stunning new terminal has emerged from a complete redesign with everything from the kerbside to the interior space. On landside arrival, a Kalwall canopy system provides shelter and links access points while a Kalwall translucent facade is

utilised to clad the main terminal building. Its unique ability to diffuse natural daylight into the interior means the new TSA screening facility now has complete privacy for the sensitive areas while bathing the interior with natural, glare-free light.

Kalwall is frequently specified for this type of prestige project where high-end performance and quality need to be coupled with aesthetics, practicality and a long lifecycle. Not only does Kalwall provide a neat and cost-effective solution but it also offers complete line-of-sight protection, maintaining privacy for building occupants while bathing the interior with diffused daylighting regardless of the weather.

RECYFIX MONOTEC drains car park at Crompton Retail Park A 930m² (10,000ft²) Farmfoods store opened its doors to customers this spring on the Crompton Retail Park, Doncaster, West Yorkshire. For this new section, the retail park’s 150-space car park was drained by some 73m of RECYFIX MONOTEC, Hauraton’s high capacity channel drainage system.

Two RECYFIX MONOTEC 100 models were installed in the car park’s asphalt surface, both channels having a grating width of 100mm (channel internal dimension). The larger channel has an overall height of 380mm and provides a cross section of 355.5cm2. The smaller channel has an overall height of 280mm and provides a cross section of 245.5cm2.

The 73m of channel installed has a total water capacity of just over 2444 litres.

The MONOTEC 1m-long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system

are integral to the channel moulding.

The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained.

The MONOTEC channels have a loading category of up to Class D400.

Are you ready for the changes to the Gas Appliances Directive?

The Gas Appliances Directive (GAD) is changing. From 21st April 2018, all products in the market will have to comply with the new Gas Appliance Regulation (GAR). Here Nick Winton, Divisional Manager for Nortek Global HVAC UK, explains more about the changes and the absence of any transition period.

he EU GAD is changing and will be replaced by the new GAR.The change moves away from having several country-specific requirements and replaces them with one consistent set of rules across the entire European Union and associated free trade areas.

After two decades in use, review is desirable to ensure the regulations are fit for purpose. In a modern world, the GAD has some particular shortcomings in terms of how it deals with standards, regulations and the role of notified bodies.

Placing a CE Marking on products means that it has been declared as complying with all applicable regulations. The CE Marking of gas appliances is currently regulated by the EU Gas Appliances Directive (GAD) (2009/142/EC). This will be replaced by the Gas Appliances Regulation (GAR) (EU 2016/426) which comes into effect from 21st April 2018.

Other CE Marking directives that may also apply to gas appliances are unaffected and will continue to apply (if they did so previously).

This change will impact everybody in the gas appliances and fittings supply chain within the EU, including manufacturers (supplying to the EU), importers, distributors and even retailers.

The Gas Appliance Regulation requires manufacturers to ensure products comply with ‘state-of-the-art’ EN standards together with mandatory risk assessment. This includes a maximum 10-year validity period on CE certification from the first date of issue. It also requires the notified body and the manufacturer to stay informed of changes to the ‘state-of-the-art’ and update appliances as needed to ensure they still meet essential regulatory requirements.

How does Brexit affect this?

The new regulation comes into force at least one year before the UK leaves the EU. Current understanding is that the EU regulations will be subsumed into UK law with little evidence that the GAR would not be included in this approach.

Contemporary copper in Australia A World Architecture Festival Finalist in 2016, this apartment building designed by SJB, in a prominent Sydney location, is defined by its restrained palette of quality materials, including Nordic Copper from Aurubis.

Commanding expansive views over Sydney Harbour, 10 Wylde Street is a seven-storey contemporary building set in an urban fabric originating from early Colonial grand residences and the first apartment buildings in Australia. The northern facade elevated above neighbouring buildings is characterised by its transparency and fineness of detailing, with thin metal window framing, slender columns and folded copper edge details. This open elevation is contained by the elongated Roman profile brick masonry forms of the other three facades.

Distinctive copper ‘wings’ to the rear facade enable small triangular balconies to project from the monolithic masonry, screening them from the south and directing views towards the city and harbour.

Crittall reinforces Mayfair chic One of Mayfair’s most prestigious apartment blocks has undergone a transformative refurbishment with a major contribution from Crittall Windows.

Chesterfield House, close to Park Lane, was built in the late 1930s on the site of a Georgian mansion of the same name.

The nine-storey mansarded block comprises 105 flats providing residents with high-specification accommodation and a full porterage service.

The refurbishment works called for the removal of all existing original steel windows and their timber subframes which were then replaced with new timber subframes clad externally with special aluminium extrusions to ensure the external surfaces were maintenance-free.

New Crittall Homelight Plus doubleglazed self-cleaning windows were then installed into the subframes.

“The original windows were Crittall and Westminster Council planners insisted that there should be a like-for-like replacement,” says Annika Blixt, General Manager of Chesterfield House Management, who considered various alternative suppliers, but concluded that Crittall’s proposals best replicated the general appearance of the building while improving the insulation value of the fenestration.

Hueck systems supplied for ‘eco’ London skyscraper Hueck has supplied its high-performance windows and doors for a new glass-clad London landmark that boasts excellent green credentials.

Hoola is a residential development of 360 individually designed homes set across two rippling glass towers in Tidal Basin Street.

The eco-friendly buildings use recycled energy and achieve a 57% reduction in CO2 emissions against Building Regulations. They are also super-insulated, with the concrete frame acting as a heat sink.

The £80m development was designed by architect firm CZWG and delivered by property developer, Hub Group.

It consists of two towers of 23 and 24 storeys offering a range of apartments from studios to three bedrooms, featuring floorto-ceiling windows and sliding glass walls opening onto full-width private balconies.

Hueck supplied the aluminium windows and doors for each of the apartments.

Managing Director, Leon Friend, commented: “Green construction has

become more important as developers look to increase the lifespan and reduce energy consumption for buildings by incorporating designs and materials that cater to future occupant needs.

Why balcony safety is a burning issue Whilst they are not yet enshrined in Building Regulations, fire safety measures for balconies are now widely stipulated by building warranty providers. Architects and developers should be mindful of this at the design stage of their projects, as Peter Melia of balcony specialist Neaco explains.

isit the centre of any major city and balconies will probably be visible in most directions. It’s estimated that there are over 45,000 highrise apartments in London alone, with flats comprising just over 50% of the capital’s residential accommodation. Given this proliferation, it is no surprise to read reports that highlight the frequency of associated risks such as fires. In its 2016 document,‘Fire safety issues with balconies’, BRE Global reported 24 cases of balcony fires since 2005. In Part B of the Building Regulations there are no fire safety requirements specifically relating to balconies (with the exception of balconies

providing a means of escape) but housebuilding warranty providers are increasingly concerned about potential risks, especially post-Grenfell, and many are requesting balcony design modifications with reference to Part B4 – which refers to the spread of fire on building exteriors.

Timber decking is an obvious risk and BRE Global’s report includes case studies identifying discarded cigarettes on decking as the cause of fires. Neaco discuss balcony specifications with architects across the UK and many tell us that decking material is the primary safety concern for warranty providers.

Their most commonly requested revision is the replacement of timber with more fireresistant materials.Wood-polymer composite decking, comprising a combination of plastics and timber fibres, is not considered to be sufficiently fire-resistant and is often rejected too. Glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) is, in essence, an oil-based product with a combination of materials and components which all react differently when exposed to fire.The polyester resins are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms and, like all organic compounds, they will burn.

Realistically, this leaves steel and aluminium as the only viable alternatives. Quite apart from the practical advantages of being a third of the weight of steel – which means it can accommodate spans between joists of up to

2m – aluminium is a superior material for fire safety. Its thermal conductivity is four times faster and therefore a greater heat input is necessary to bring aluminium up to a given temperature than required for steel.

Aluminium’s fire resistance is extremely highly rated in the BS 476 Fire Test Series and it also eliminates the need for timber joists, thereby significantly reducing fire risk.

What’s more, aluminium is corrosive-free, extremely durable (with a design life of 60 to 100 years) and 100% recyclable. It can be easily machined to provide special features which serve the needs of balcony decking, including anti-slip surfaces.This ability to provide slip resistance is another aspect which makes aluminium safer than timber, which over time becomes increasingly slippery underfoot.

basement disaster. Excavations performed contrary to the structural engineer’s instructions resulted in banks falling in beneath the street, and shutters bursting inwards under the weight of compacted concrete.

When the site was left in this appalling condition, Newton and its specialist contractor MJ Rooney stepped in to bring the project back from its disastrous beginnings and provide complete waterproofing protection for one of the smallest Passivhaus in the world.

OMNIE UFH system supplied for royal marine’s accessible new home Exeter-based renewables and underfloor heating specialist, OMNIE has donated one of its Staples pipework systems for the construction of a fully wheelchair accessible home that has been built to accommodate a former royal marine and his family, after he contracted a serious illness on overseas service and can now no longer walk.

Corporal Phil Eaglesham contracted the relatively rare Q fever while serving in Afghanistan five years ago with the condition unfortunately proving to be degenerative and making his existing home increasingly unsuitable.

In order to help the family, The Royal Marines Charity appealed for help to construct a bespoke dwelling to meet his specific needs. OMNIE was amongst a number of building product manufacturers to make donations in kind, with the 600m of Staples underfloor heating pipe and made-to-measure manifold being provided to keep the entire ground floor of the two-storey property at a carefully controlled temperature. The layout of the property has created a totally wheelchair-friendly environment across both floors, linked by a lift.

As well as the integral garage, the downstairs contains a master bedroom suite with shower room, while the linked kitchen, dining and living rooms feature folding doors, which open out onto the rear garden. These areas, together with a lobby and separate cloakroom are heated by six pipe circuits connected back to the five port manifold and controlled by programmable room thermostats.

Suitable for operating at low temperatures, the different OMNIE UFH systems available are suitable for delivering optimum efficiency in conjunction with high-performance gas or oil boilers as well as the company’s own range of air or ground source heat pumps.

Breather Foil FR brings benefits for Bishop’s Stortford builder The performance potential and versatility of YBS Insulation’s Breather Foil FR for use in timber frame construction has been elegantly illustrated through a highspecification residential development in an East Hertfordshire village.

The project at Furneux Pelham, near Bishop’s Stortford, features an enclave of five homes priced at up to £1m, whose elevations display a blend of timber cladding, render and brickwork, all employed to clad a factory-fabricated timber frame system.

Importantly, the Breather Foil FR specified by Land & County Development and the consultant, Helix Design, will fulfil multiple roles. Fitted over the outer face of the sheathing board as the panels are fabricated, the breathable bubble membrane functions to not only allow moisture to escape from the fabric of the building, but protects the timber and insulation material from the elements as work proceeds. Crucially, it is also flame retardant and acts to enhance the overall thermal performance of the building envelope.

This thermal enhancement comes partly from the insulating value of the sheet’s 4mm-thick structure and also the reflectance of the foil face. While Breather Foil FR is frequently used to protect timber frame systems containing mineral wool or PIR insulation, in the case of the Land & Country Developments scheme in Furneux Pelham, the design team opted to utilise YBS Insulation’s SuperQuilt: a 19-ply material including layers of foil, expanded polyethylene and polyester wadding.

YBS Insulation’s technical advisory service carried out a series of heat loss calculations for Land & Country – reducing the size of timber stud required from a typical 140mm thickness to just 90mm.

SuperQuilt multilayer foil earns Agrément approval The effectiveness of SuperQuilt, part of the YBS range, as a singlelayer insulation solution for use beneath pitched roof rafters, in either new-build or refurbishment situations has been underlined by the award of a coveted BBA Certificate.Agrément Certificate 17/5388 explains in detail how the already widely specified, multi-layer foil insulation can be used to retain energy within an attic or habitable loft spaces: cutting fuel bills, improving comfort levels for building occupants and adding value. Importantly, it can be employed to address detail areas such as the cheeks of dormers, dwarf walls, bonnet hips and other features.The certification comes after prolonged evaluation by the British Board of Agrément and covers such considerations as related Building Regulation matters, design criteria, ventilation and installation guidance, as well as regular review by the highly respected authority.

Crucially, the Agrément Certificate confirms that under normal conditions the durability of the SuperQuilt will be equivalent to that of the roof it is installed within and will contribute to controlling condensation in the roof space while offering very good thermal performance.

The emissivity of 0.03 for the outer foil is complemented by a declared core thermal resistance of 1.35m2KW.The certificate further states that the BBA believes SuperQuilt can satisfy the requirements of not only the Building Regulations 2010 (England and Wales), but also the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 and The Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004: making it ‘fit for purpose’ nationwide.

A Colchester-based roofing contractor has been using Magply Recovery boards as part of a high-specification build-up, which provided its operatives with a relatively quiet as well as safe means of carrying out re-roofing works to school classrooms during lesson times.

Instead of scabbling smooth the old covering of asphalt and chippings on the Bishop’s Stortford buildings, RT Roofing proposed to simply sweep away any loose material and then begin the over-roofing with a layer of 6mm-thick Magply, bonded down in hot bitumen.

Oakworth Homes is undertaking the complex build on Infirmary Road for a private student sector developer, currently completing erection of the four-storey block that forms phase two of the work. Based on the standard version of Oakworth’s Varytherm Timber Frame range, the panels are sheathed in 9mm-thick Magply boards up to the underside of the top floor to guard against the risk of fire spreading to adjacent properties.

Mapei products for marble installation at prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel Over 700m2 of marble tiling with approximately two miles of brass inlay has been fitted using Mapei’s high-quality ceramic and preparation products to the foyer and reception areas at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel, Mayfair. The refurbishment project took place over nine months.

The subfloor and screed products from Mapei were installed to the flooring after existing tiles were removed from the lobby and reception area, as well as lifts and bathroom areas. Mapei’s Topcem screed binder was used as a fast-track option before Ultraplan Renovation 3240 screed was used to level the flooring. Prior to tiling, Mapei’s waterproofing Primer S was also applied.

Mapei’s Mapetex anti-fracture membrane was installed to ensure the luxury tiles in the lobby area were protected from cracking.

Mapetex is a special non-woven fabric designed to alleviate stresses within the substrate, preserving the integrity of the tiled finish in areas of high pedestrian traffic and less than perfect substrates.

Installer, Superior Stone, commented: “We are confident users of Mapei’s products, however, as this was a renovation project we came across many problems from the previous build-up being up to 80mm out of level. Movement within the floor whilst fixing tiles also caused some problems but Mapei’s technical team were great at providing assistance on this important project.”

Mapei’s Keraquick adhesive in both grey and white shades were used to fix Superior Stone’s Crema Marfil tiles with brass inlay to the lobby and reception areas, using Latex Plus adhesive polymer admixture to improve elasticity and vertical slip characteristics.

Waterproofing and ceramic systems for The American School

Mapei products have been used for the redevelopment of the Adelphi building, working with Stone & Ceramic to install travertine stone floor and wall cladding within the reception and lobby area, covering approximately 700m2.

Mapei products were also used throughout the toilet cores where approximately 850m2 of porcelain tiles were installed.

A redeveloped ground floor reception incorporates feature artwork and retains the building’s original Art Deco history and style. Mapei products were used to prepare the floor before wall and floorcoverings were installed.

Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 is a fibre-reinforced self-levelling compound designed for renovating existing floor substrates and can be used in both commercial and domestic situations. Keraquick S1 adhesive in white, alongside Latex Plus and Ultracolor Plus grout in shades White (100) and Cement Grey (113) were used in the reception area to install travertine flooring and Italian-sourced stone for wallcoverings.

Porcelain tiling to the wall and floors in the bathroom and shower areas were also installed using Mapei’s Keraquick S1 adhesive together with Latex Plus admixture to obtain a highperformance, fast-setting and highly deformable adhesive. The bathroom areas were finished using Ultracolor Plus grout in shades White (100) and Cement Grey (113).

Mapei systems have been installed for the construction of a swimming pool at The American School in London, St John’s Wood.

Complete waterproofing and ceramic tiling solutions were installed to areas in the pool tank and changing room.

Orms Architects oversaw the project and specified Mapei’s system. Rosie Bard from Orms Architects commented: “Mapei was the obvious choice for a highend swimming pool environment such as this.The quality of the design, finishes and fit-out meant that a product was required that met both the technical and aesthetic requirements.” The new swimming pool is part of a £10m development completed whilst the school remained open, which meant materials had to be installed quickly and with as little disruption as possible.

EP Ceramics installed Mapei’s Planitop Fast 330, a quick-setting, fibre-reinforced cementitious mortar to smooth out surface irregularities for the pool walls.

The base of the pool was then formed using Mapei Topcem, a hydraulic binder mixed with sand and bonded using Mapei Planicrete; this formed screed allows fast-track installation of subsequent materials. Once the pool tank had been formed the Mapei Mapelastic was applied.The Mapenet 150 reinforcing mesh was installed between two coats combined with the Mapeband at the joints to reinforce the waterproofing layer. Once dry, the ceramic tiles were then installed using Keraflex Maxi S1 adhesive and the joints finished with the highly water- and abrasionresistant Ultracolor Plus in shade 112 (Medium Grey).

Stunning 33 Glasshouse Street features underfloor air conditioning AET Flexible Space, a leading provider of underfloor air conditioning, has recently completed commissioning 33 Glasshouse Street in London.

Space-saving underfloor air conditioning has been specified by consultant WPP and architect practice Buckley Grey Yeoman.

With underfloor systems, fully conditioned air is fed into the plenum by zonal downflow units (CAM), which is then supplied into the workspace via fan terminal units (Fantiles). The Fantile units feature integrated controllers where users can personally adjust the fan speed and temperature to suit their own comfort. Systems can be configured with underfloor or high-level return and can easily integrate with passive or other ventilation systems.

UFAC at 20 Soho Square on track to improve user wellbeing AET Flexible Space has recently completed the supply and commissioning of underfloor air conditioning equipment at 20 Soho Square in London’s West End. AET supplied a total

AET Flexible Space of 25 CAM-C (DX) downflow units along with associated Daikin heat pumps and around 360 TU4-EC fan terminals; with the underfloor system installed throughout most of the building.

With underfloor systems, the whole plenum under the building’s raised access floor becomes the duct, or ventilation zone, and each floor is divided into zones. These zones are supplied with fully conditioned (chilled or warmed) air, which is fed into the plenum by the zonal downflow units (CAM) and then supplied into the workspace via fan terminal units (Fantiles).

AET Flexible Space Fantiles boost airflow to Sky Central meeting pods AET Flexible Space has supplied 40 of its innovative low-energy Fantiles for the flexible meeting pods at the Sky Central media campus in Osterley, West London. Ventilation is achieved primarily by means of a central plant displacement ventilation system, but outlets such as swirl diffusers and grilles offer little or no control to react to changing loads and designers were concerned that the pods would be at risk of subcooling when not occupied and overheating if the occupancy in these areas exceeded the design provision. It was therefore deemed necessary to provide further airflow control and temperature control. AET Flexible Space Fantiles were selected as a solution.

Slab-to-slab restrictions overcome at 17 Devonshire Square Underfloor air conditioning has again helped overcome restricted slab-to-slab dimensions at the recentlyrefurbished 17 Devonshire Square in London. AET Flexible Space worked closely with consultant Cundall on the HVAC specification to find a solution to enable the main office areas to meet BCO standards in this severely height-restricted building. The final system specification at 17 Devonshire Square is a CAM-V direct expansion (DX) system, with underfloor supply air, and return air at high level. The high-level return air option was preferred as this would create greater flexibility for positioning Fantiles, and also remove the need for a zone barrier and air segregation baffle in the restricted underfloor plenum.

Phase two, where the trays have been used, has created 10, one-bedroom flats, on two floors where, on the ground floor, the Marmox Showerstone trays were set within a screeded floor, while those upstairs have been installed into the timber joists to maintain level access. All of the 1200 x 1200mm Marmox trays were supplied via the Chesterfield branch of SIG.

traditionally-built house from its fully subterranean precast concrete ‘super basement’ have been addressed by Marmox’s Thermoblocks. Despite utilising a proprietary precast concrete, sectional system with integral waterproofing and insulation measures, an effective means of controlling heat loss at the ground floor perimeter was still to be specified. The answer came in the form of 267 Thermoblocks – measuring 100mm wide by 65mm high and 600mm in length – each of which incorporates small cylindrical columns of high strength concrete within their low lambda value insulation.

The units feature a horizontal overlap, making installation simpler – with the joints being bonded using Marmox Multibond adhesive.

“Fast, friendly service” for prestigious housing development in Oxon Cotswold Roofing was tasked with providing and fitting the aluminium rainwater system for a new development in Oxon for 10 bespoke residential properties and knew just where to turn. Rob Biles, Owner of Cotswold Roofing, knows he can rely on ARP for quality products and a speedy service. As it was such a sizeable project, Rob decided that it would be better to phase the job and have two deliveries. This meant that there was no excess material being left on site, limiting any possible damage to the components prior to being fitted. Sentinel Beaded Half Round Gutter and Colonnade Cast Eared Downpipes were specified for this project, as they were in keeping with the style of these properties.

Trueline fascia and soffit complements kitchen-diner extension The property based in Chelsfield, Orpington, was having a kitchen-diner refurbishment and extension in a modern, contemporary

design. Contractor Dickens Developments contacted ARP’s Area Sales Manager, David Capel, as they had met at a previous site. David was invited to a site meeting where the extension was surveyed and the various Trueline fascia and soffit options were discussed. Bespoke Trueline fascias and soffits were made to measure in ARP’s inhouse production facility, with CAD/CAM drawings produced and signed off by the client prior to going into production. The fascia profiles were polyester powder coated in matt black RAL 9005 with an overtrim covering the fixings on the fascia.

New offices get full ARP treatment The brief was to provide an aluminium rainwater system, including fascias and soffits, to a newly-built office building in Llanishen, Monmouthshire.

K S Barry provided ARP with drawings for tendering, and a detailed site visit determined the exact dimensions of the building. Full-size samples of the fascias and soffits were supplied in order for the contractor to gain approval from the client. Due to the success of the project, ARP was asked to supply further fascias and soffits plus bespoke fabricated aluminium flashings to fit around the roller doors.

ARP provided the aluminium for the whole contract, which consisted of Legion Box Gutter, Colonnade Rainwater Pipes, Trueline Fascia and Soffits and Trueline Bespoke Fabrications for roller doors.

Britannia Cast Iron rainwater system complements Kent housing development Wealden Homes’ latest development in Hollingbourne, for 14 detached family homes consisting of three detached bungalows and 11 houses, required a rainwater system that was in keeping with the surrounding area for the three bungalows. ARP’s Area Sales Manager, David Capel, called on site, gained the installer information and a bill of quantities to build a quotation.

ARP won the contract due to its speed in providing a requested sample, quality of product and the competitive quotation it presented. The products specified were Britannia Cast Iron Plain Half Round Gutter and Britannia Cast Iron Cast Collared Circular Rainwater Pipe painted in black. Cast iron was chosen as it was in keeping with the aesthetics of the surrounding area.

The brief was to provide the decoration in the form of light ivory (RAL 1015) powder-coated bands which would fit the building to bring it in line with its new environment. ARP’s Trueline bespoke fabrications were ideal for this solution, being made to the exact dimensions of the building. In total, ARP specified, manufactured, painted and delivered 330 individual pieces to make up the bands for the building. Each piece was custommade and painted in-house.

Grade II Listed church has legacy makeover Known for its reputation for providing high-quality craftsmanship through an experienced team, Bakers of Danbury was the ideal main contractor for the refurbishment of the United Reform Church, Walken, Stevenage. The building was originally used as a church in 1810 and is Grade II Listed.

Upon meeting with Bakers of Danbury’s surveyor, ARP’s Account Manager, Martyn Reed, suggested Legacy Cast Half Round Aluminium Gutter and Colonnade Cast Eared Rainwater Pipe in a black polyester powdercoated finish. Legacy is ARP’s cast aluminium range manufactured to replicate traditional cast iron profiles. Aluminium’s properties enhanced the sustainability of the refurbished Grade II Listed church, whilst ensuring the property keeps its traditional appearance.

However, an influx of cold air every time the door opened was definitely not on the menu. ArcHaus receives a facelift from Remmers The exterior of this iconic building was suffering with high levels of damage, including salt ingress and excessive cracking to the render and brickwork.

Salt inhibitor was used as a masonry salt blocker and applied to the exposed brickwork.

Large areas of the render were repaired with Restoration Render and the deep section repairs were completed with Remmers Betofix R2, a fast curing, high strength concrete repair mortar. OS Concre Fill and Impregnation Primer were also applied prior to the application of the final protective coating system.To mitigate reflective cracking in the future, Remmers Elastoflex system with reinforcement was applied throughout, giving a high degree of finish to the exterior of this 1930s landmark building.

This advanced aerospace manufacturing, research and development facility produces engine control systems for a range of applications, including the Rolls-Royce Trent family of aircraft engines.The flooring needed to fulfil the client’s high standards and requirements which consisted of: Chemical Resistant Flooring with Chemical Resistant Wall Render; Epoxy Conductive Flooring System with an Anti-Slip Textured Finish; and finally, Remmers Self Smoothing Epoxy Resin with a Slip Resistant Seal Coat. A total of 9500m2 of Remmers’ resin flooring was installed.

Remmers sets sail at Red Wharf Bay Red Wharf Bay Sailing & Watersports Club is set in an area of outstanding beauty at Traeth Bychan on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.
