iophilia and sustainability; two terms in the mind of many an architect and design professional when a new project comes to fruition.The terminology behind the two phrases are intrinsically connected and fundamentally reduce our environmental footprint through both architecture and interior design.

According to the theory of Biologist, E.O.Wilson, biophilia is our “innate and genetically-determined affinity with the natural world”. Architects throughout the world are incessantly switching onto the benefits of biophilic design and further projects are emerging from every corner of the world, particularly from within the workplace realm. High-profile organisations, such as Google, Apple and Amazon, are capitalising on the benefits that biophilic design concepts can bring to their workforce.

It is scientifically proven that incorporating components from the natural world into architectural schemes improves concentration and enhances our workplace performance; this can be achieved through the use of wood, living walls and natural daylighting.

One project that has pushed the boundaries of sustainable and biophilic design is Peldon Rose’s office scheme for environmental charity, Friends of the Earth. Sustainability was at the core of the charity’s requirements for its new headquarters at The Printworks, south London.Taking into account the organisation’s ethos, Peldon Rose has successfully reflected Friends of the Earth’s environmental aims through the design of its new base.The innovative office comprises geographically categorised divisions that work on the fundaments of biophilic design.Take a trip to Friends of the Earth’s brandnew HQ on page 18.

Elsewhere in this issue, sustainability is put into practice at France’s latest performing arts centre, La Seine Musicale. Sited on the previously run-down Seguin Island, the new state-of-the-art stadium entices with its 45m-high revolving ‘sail’ of solar panels and superlative design. RIBA’s new talks series: EUROPA – Connecting Ideas Across Borders The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced the L.K.E Ozolins EUROPA talks series. Running from September 2017 to April 2018, the series will launch with a special introductory talk by Sir David Chipperfield in conversation with Marcus Fairs, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Dezeen on 6th September 2017. All talks take place at the RIBA in London. EUROPA focuses on the relationship between the UK and other European countries. Conversations between emerging architectural practices from Europe will provide a unique platform for international architects to engage in critical dialogues with UK audiences about contemporary architecture.

Speller Metcalfe wins 14th contract for Western Power Distribution Speller Metcalfe has been awarded £9.7m in construction work for the refurbishment of Western Power Distribution’s depots in Birmingham, Bristol and Llanfihangel – totalling 14 projects and £22.2m worth of work from the client to date.The individually tendered projects are part of a series of works for longstanding client WPD to refurbish and update facilities nationally across the electricity distribution network, including remodelling and extending workshops and offices and extensive external works.

Speller Metcalfe has worked to fast-track deadlines and achieved ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM scores for WPD, including its award-winning Spilsby depot which was awarded the highest BREEAM score in world at 101.9%.

Pioneering eco business centre gets the go-ahead A proposal for the new Bicester Eco Business Centre has recently been granted planning approval by Cherwell District Council. The building will form a key element of the zero-carbon North West Bicester Eco Town exemplar site, Elmsbrook, which is currently under construction.

The centre is one of the principal strategies in creating sustainable employment for the future North West Bicester community. Commissioned by the local authority, the new three-storey building will accommodate 125 workplaces, serving local and start-up businesses.

Tim Stidwill joins Cundall

ColladoCollins has appointed David Minnis as Director, who will work alongside Founders Roy Collado and Jonathan Collins, supporting the practice’s continued success in the residential and public sectors. Previously at HLM, David’s career spans over 17 years, with a portfolio comprising high-profile developments of up to £400m across commercial, education, defence, justice and healthcare sectors.

Tim Stidwill has joined Cundall as Structural Engineering Partner.

Tim’s primary focus will be to enhance Cundall’s structural engineering brand in the Midlands.

He is a Chartered Member of both the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers and a champion of innovative BIM tools as well as an advocate of technical excellence and efficient working practices.Tim is also a well-known figure on the Midlands classical music scene.

Stephen George + Partners announces appointments Stephen George + Partners has appointed two new directors as it continues the expansion of its residential practice. In Brief Multiple award wins for home-builder’s site managers

In synergy with the pioneering eco-town’s masterplan, the business centre will be an exemplar in sustainable architecture and construction; designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, zero-carbon and aspires to be the first non-domestic building in the UK, completed to the new Passivhaus Plus standard. Led by the specialist expertise of project architect, Architype, and experienced contractor, Kier Construction, the delivery team is primed to accept the challenge.

“Bicester Eco Business Centre presented itself as an ideal project to attempt the new Passivhaus Plus standard.

The combination of a dedicated client on a conscientious site, coupled with an appropriately experienced design team and contractor, has made us

confident that we can take the design to the next level and meet the new standard,” commented Project Architect, Lee Fordham.

The vibrant new workplace, positioned on a gateway corner of the new ‘local centre’, has been sensitively designed to be a distinctive building that forms a characterful bookend to the street, without detracting from the surrounding residences and mixed-use developments. Striking vertical timber fins that wrap the external envelope function as a shading mechanism to the high levels of glazing, whilst also creating an attractive aesthetic.

The core of the simple, rectangular form is a tripleheight top-lit circulation space, which, coupled with the generous walkways, breakout spaces and landscaped areas is designed to encourage informal,

happenstance meetings and foster a transparent community culture.

In parallel with a palette of non-toxic natural materials, the environmental strategy will support a healthy working environment, helping to increase workforce wellness and productivity through clean, optimised air supply and eliminating excessive use of artificial heat and light.The low form-factor and high levels of quality insulation will be critical in the building’s thermal performance which, besides offering a controlled internal environment, will keep energy consumption to a minimum.The fabric-first approach is bolstered by a renewable energy strategy, including PV panels and heat supplied from the local district heating system.

Four Site Managers from CALA Homes (East) have each scooped a prestigious award in recognition of their commitment to the highest standards in house-building.The Edinburgh-headquartered developer performed particularly well, with a total of nine winners across its regions landing the ‘Pride in the Job’ Awards, which received over 16,000 applicants and were awarded to the top 450 site managers across the entire UK.Winners for CALA Homes (East) were Neal Toland for his work at Brunswick Road and Kenny Reid, of Liberton Grange, two of its Edinburgh sites.

Also recognised were Ian Welsh who manages Straiton’s Mayburn Park and Mark Foley, for work at Dalmeny Park, South Queensferry.

2017 Brick Awards shortlist revealed from record number of entrants Entering its 41st year, the 2017 Brick Awards has seen the largest volume of entries to date with 324 projects being entered across 14 categories.

With more outstanding entries than ever, the Brick Awards showcases the very best projects using UK member bricks.With the quality of projects to this prestigious event always being of the highest calibre, this year was no exception.The task of shortlisting the entrants fell to a panel of experienced architects, planners, brickwork, design and others experts who produced a final shortlist of 85 projects. Among the shortlisted projects is London City Island which has been selected for two categories: Innovative Use of Brick and Clay Products and Large Housing Development.

Linton Group grows portfolio Linton Group has announced the acquisition of two properties at 9-11 Wellesley Road, Croydon.The purchase is a joint venture between Linton Group and Henika Group.

The purchase is the first in a string of prospective acquisitions for the partnership, which will primarily focus on commercial sites with asset management potential in London and the South East.

Please tell us a bit about your career background After graduating and enrolling in my Part III course at the University of Nottingham, I was fortunate enough to be offered a position as a Part II Architectural Assistant at Rayner Davies Architects. It was obviously still a tough time for the profession but I was hopeful that things would be on the up and I could soon be qualified as a practicing architect. Finally, in 2010, I graduated as an Architect and joined CPMG a short while after that – and, six years on, I’m still here.

Had you always wanted to pursue a career in architecture?

For as long as I can remember, yes. I was always drawing something, designing houses or making models when I was young – breaking things apart as well to figure out how to put things back together again. My mum was a talented Artist, which

is perhaps where this fascination in architecture and design has come from. My parents always encouraged me to find a profession that I was good at.

What has been your greatest influence and source of inspiration?

I can’t really describe an influence or source of inspiration as such, I suppose things just fell into place along the way. I have always had a desire to succeed in something and make a positive impact, but I suppose I did not believe it would happen until 2007 when I started my studies at the University of Nottingham where I met two influential tutors: Professor Benson Lau and Professor Graham Farmer. Both were extremely encouraging during my two years at the University of Nottingham and have shaped my attitude towards architecture and gave me the confidence to succeed, which I am extremely grateful of.

What has been your most notable project to date?

In the last year, I have completed three major projects: a new hotel for Center Parcs in Elveden; an advanced manufacturing building for Cranfield University (called AIRC, of which Rolls-Royce and Airbus are contributors) and London Road Fire Station in Nottingham.

It was great for this building to be recognised by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Awards, winning two regional awards for regeneration and infrastructure. Now, I am working on a new large-scale

project for Kaplan, a higher education college to teach international students before they go on to university.This project is in Liverpool, within Paddington Village, and is the first building to be built on a brownfield site within Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter.

What do you think is the greatest challenge for designing in sustainability?

The preconceived view that sustainability costs money. In some circumstances this is perhaps true, with emerging materials, technologies and building methods that are untested and costing more than traditional construction techniques. I have always been taught, however, of an integrated environmental approach to design.This stems from employing basic principles, such as utilising any external opportunities or constraints that a site may exhibit, utilising natural gains such as sunlight, ventilation and daylight in a controlled manner.

What can we expect to see from CPMG over the next year?

So far this year, the CPMG team has delivered numerous projects, and is in the process of working on many more. Locally, we are about to start on site with a new health centre at the University of Nottingham, which will be the largest GP surgery in the UK. I’m also leading on the project for a new ‘live-learn’ facility for Liverpool International College.

The new £27m facility is set to be an impressive addition to Liverpool’s skyline.

A French regeneration

A radical revival The creation of the main building of La Seine Musicale was entrusted to Shigeru Ban in association with Paris-based Jean de Gastines. The event venue itself is intended to host music of every genre in a large-scale public cultural facility with a surface area of 36,500m2. The stadium is part of the comprehensive redevelopment of Seguin Island, with construction taking place over 255,000m2, of which 84,000m2 is dedicated to culture. The site chosen for the project has undeniable appeal in terms of landscape, even though the building process was made more complicated due

to restricted access on account of it being an island, as well as storage problems because its 2.35-hectare surface is spread out over a long, narrow area.

Historical uses Four centuries ago, Seguin Island was cultivated by farmers. Situated on the road linking Versailles to Paris, it then became a rest stop for aristocrats, before Louis XV acquired it for his daughters.

Sold to a laundry company, it became state property once more after the French Revolution.

Fought over by Sèvres, Issy and Auteuil, its land was acquired in 1794 by the Chemist, Armand Seguin, who experimented with a new process of tanning there. But as the 19th century came to a close, the island started to welcome both industrial and leisure activities, including pigeon hunting, fishing and boating.

In June 1919, when Louis Renault bought up land on the island, he earmarked it first and foremost for allotments for workers. 10 years later, the flourishing company already had 3000 employees within its ranks, spread out over nearly 300,000m2 in the southeast of Boulogne-Billancourt, in former homes and gardens transformed into workshops, foundries and more, linked by railway.

Four centuries ago, Seguin Island was cultivated by farmers

It was not until 1934 that Renault inaugurated its state-of-the-art factory; two years later, in the midst of the Popular Front movements, the occupied building would come to symbolise the struggles of the workers. In 1944, upon the death of its patriarch, the Renault factories had produced 900,000 vehicles in less than half a century.

Together with the new factory in Flin, the Seguin Island plant mass-produced the models for which the company would become famous: the Frégate, the 4CV, the Dauphine (2000 vehicles a day from 1955 onwards), the Caravelle, the R4, R5, R6 and R16.

ocated on Seine Île Seguin (Seguin Island), La Seine Musicale isn’t only an aesthetically-stunning building – praised by the likes of Condé Nast Traveler – it also features almost 800m2 of solar panels placed on a 45m-high, 200-tonne moving ‘sail’ which mirrors the path of the sun throughout the day, moving at 0.08m/s.

Within the framework of the renovation of Seguin Island, the sail, as a symbol of technology, represents an arrival in the 21st century where the dominant themes are modernity and a respect for the environment.

A state-of-the-art venue The complex comprises a 4000- to 6000-seat concert hall and a 1150-seat auditorium, and also features premises dedicated to artists in residence and adjoining spaces, putting La Seine Musicale in the same league as the facilities of other great European capitals such as London (the Southbank Centre), Hamburg (Elbe Philharmonic) and Rome (Parco della Musica Auditorium).

La Seine Musicale has taken shape thanks to Patrick Devedjian, President of the Departmental Council of Hauts-de-Seine, who wants it to be “the gateway to the Vallée de la Culture in Hauts-de-Seine”.

The building, designed by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines, succeeded in resolving the challenge presented by both the complexity of the site and the scope of this cultural project. The architects managed to play within these limitations in such a way that the integrity of the project was never compromised. It is, moreover, the resolution of these complexities that highlights the difficulty and the appeal of the

work of Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines for La Seine Musicale. Since becoming a landmark in this region west of Paris, La Seine Musicale has become the region’s icon, visible from numerous axes into the capital.

Designed in congruence with the urban plan conceived by Jean Nouvel for the entirety of the island, it is an emblem of the culture of Hauts-de-Seine. Its largely elongated shape recalls that of an ocean liner, whose built-up base slopes to reveal the auditorium: a nest of woven wood with rounded forms.

By the early 1990s, the factory could no longer keep up with the competition and closed its doors definitively on March 31st, 1992. Renault’s Seguin Island plant was razed to the ground in 2005.Thus, this great historical site of France’s 20th-century automotive heritage and the symbol of union conquests disappeared at the same time.

Exactly one century after the Belle Époque, Seguin Island is being reinstated into a contemporary leisure-focused society and, benefiting from well-reasoned town planning, it is open to all.This new face is reinforced by its unique geographical position along the river that extends throughout the entirety of the Department of Hauts-de-Seine.

The result is a positive workplace that stays true to the organisation’s core environmental beliefs, and reminds the Friends of the Earth team of its purpose, while sowing the seeds for the organisation to continue to thrive.

riends of the Earth campaign for solutions to environmental problems including climate change, land, food and water as well as environmental justice. The charity’s goal is to enable the next generation to enjoy a better environment, a safer climate and healthier, clean water, food and air.

When interior specialist, Peldon Rose, was appointed as Friends of the Earth’s workplace consultant, it took the charity’s brief as an opportunity to create a showcase for responsible, sustainable sourcing within workplace design.

Sustainable elements include reclaimed wooden flooring taken from another area of the old warehouse, Interface’s carpet tiles – comprising recycled content – as well as a reception desk fabricated from reused cardboard. Peldon Rose’s sustainability efforts reach to motion detector innovations and manual switch lighting as well as instant hot water taps and an air cooling system which sucks in the cool air at night negating the need for air conditioning. Interface’s biophilia-inspired Urban Retreat collection was used throughout the communal office space to mimic diverse elements of nature. The collection offers 11 dynamic modular flooring products, ranging from refined textures to broad, organic forms to create an illusion of the natural world. The carpet tiles were utilised in the open-plan office space and represent different aspects of the environment ranging from textured grass to sandy deserts.

“The Urban Retreat collection allowed us to create quick and easy-to-understand visual prompts that feel like you’re venturing across different regions of the earth,” added Steve.

Around the world Peldon Rose’s design concept,‘what if the world was flat?’, permitted Friends of the Earth’s office to be divided from left to right along the earth’s latitudinal zones, creating geographical regions from across the world.

Interface’s Urban Retreat carpet has enabled Peldon Rose to create distinct sectors within from the company’s iceberg-themed meeting rooms in the office; from the polar region and rain forest open spaces to the preserved moss walls and tree house at the centre for meetings in the wetlands.

The polar region’s cool, calming effect enables staff at Friends of the Earth to retreat to a space dedicated to quiet working. As the temperature of the latitude rises within the office’s spaces, the colours mirror the warmth and in turn encourage a lively energy and pace to work in a collaborative environment.

The wetland hub area is intended as a hands-on, flexible zone where staff gather for contemplative work.

Friends of the Earth’s round the world interior design scheme has showcased the organisation’s global reach and brought restorative shades and textures of nature into the workplace. Interface’s sustainable and nature-inspired collections were used to bring the vision to life, alongside a colour scheme that reflects Friends of the Earth’s global reach; from the rainforest to the Arctic.

reatively, there’s never been a more exciting time to be an architect. New materials, the drive for sustainability and opportunities for enhanced collaborative processes opened up by BIM have broadened the possibilities. Meanwhile, best practice across the globe is pushing the boundaries both structurally and aesthetically.

Research recently carried out by the Construction Marketing Experts (CME) team indicates that, away from the showpiece schemes, the market remains challenging for many architects. Escalating land values, funding uncertainty and the popularity of design-and-build procurement routes are all putting pressure on architects’ fees. Indeed, the latest Turner & Townsend construction market survey highlights that the cost of construction gap is narrowing between London and the regions, making the squeeze on fees and competition for commissions a national issue.

Cost challenges The research made it clear that many architects feel long-term value from their projects and creativity in their design approach are being compromised by a focus on driving down fees and increasing the yield of the development.

Marshalls has acknowledged the industry’s need for an allencompassing structure, which highlights potential issues when it comes to stone sourcing in a number of well-known countries

Marshalls launches new Ethical Risk Index During recent years, improper practice in large organisation’s supply chains have been brought to light in the media, with brands such as ASOS, Mango and Marks and Spencer all being put in the spotlight, with issues including child workers and the exploitation of refugees being uncovered.

E

thical sourcing is an issue affecting many industries today, and is not going away any time soon. Issues including slave and child labour have traditionally marred the stone industry’s reputation, but a positive move towards transparent supply chains has been a sea change of late. However, sourcing in the stone industry is still a difficult area in which to clearly identify transparency in supply chains across the world.

Marshalls has acknowledged the industry’s need for an all-encompassing structure, which highlights potential issues when it comes to stone sourcing in a number of well-known countries, and brought varying measures together in the Ethical Risk Index.

The Marshalls Ethical Risk Index (ERI) uses a bespoke, independently audited scoring framework and gives a genuine insight into the multi-dimensional ethical challenges facing stone procurers to allow for more informed decision-making. It scores its own commercial stone portfolio against the industry ‘cluster’ for

the corresponding origin of the stone in terms of ethical sourcing for that particular location.

The ERI has been developed in conjunction with Stirling Smith, an independent consultant who specialises in ethical trade and human rights at work. He has worked for DFID, British Council, Fair Labour Association, trade unions, NGOs and several companies. He is a lead trainer for the Ethical Trading Initiative, and his areas of expertise include child labour, HIV/ AIDS in the workplace, migrant labour, social dialogue and industrial relations, as well as health and safety at work.

He said: “The ERI is a huge step forward in transparency. Marshalls was the first company in the stone sector to join the Ethical Trading Initiative and has been a leader for more than a decade. The Ethical Risk Index will enable customers to see what kind of problems might exist in a particular country, and whether a supplier is better or worse than the average in that country.”

Sourcing in the stone industry is still a difficult area in which to clearly identify transparency in supply chains across the world

The ERI score is presented on two levels, a detailed breakdown across 10 assessment criteria, with a simple rating system derived from the average score, and consists of 10 different measures, all of which have equal bearing on the overall ERI score. These are:

1. Modern Slavery Act awareness This measures Marshalls’ journey on implementing the Modern Slavery Act and Marshalls’ declared actions from its Modern Slavery and Anti-Human Trafficking Policy and Disclosure Statement.

The measure is scored on the supplier’s ‘Awareness’ of the Act, ‘Understanding’ of the Act and ‘Implementation’ of a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) where this has been deemed appropriate.

This measure is not about the risk of modern slavery in the supply chain, but it is about embedding the awareness of the UK legislation into the Marshalls supply chain.

8. Environmental This is a measure of the impact of the operation on the environment whether short- or long-term and what mitigation and future restoration is planned.

The measure is scored by two issues; these being legal compliance and best practice engagement.

2. Supply chain visibility Supply chain visibility is a measure of the transparency of the supply chain to raw material extraction. It is about how confident Marshalls can be that it knows how and where the product is extracted and processed into finished goods for re-sale. Supply chain visibility gives Marshalls the ability to be confident in assessing the ethical risks.

3. Income and employment security This looks at how employees are paid and their contract of work. It is about how exploited the work force are, and gives some indication as to whether modern slavery may be present.

The measure has four issues against which it is scored.These are wage levels, payment of wages, working hours and regular employment.

4. Health and safety Health and safety precautions and the welfare of the workers are all considered in this measure. It is about the awareness of potential hazards and the measures which are undertaken to prevent these.

The measure has four criteria relating to safe working conditions in the processing of natural stone (control of dust, noise level and the guarding and personal protection compliance with regards to machine safety) and two of welfare facilities (on and off site facilities available).

5. Social wellbeing Social wellbeing measures how the supply chain treats its workers through harsh or

inhumane treatment and how it engages with the wider community. The treatment of the workers is another potential sign of the potential of modern slavery in the supply chain.

The measure is scored for treatment on evidence for harsh or inhumane treatment through perceived treatment and finally exemplar treatment with good management systems.

The Corporate Social Responsibility program is scored from none in place, through informal and limited up to embedded and exemplar.

6. Employment freely chosen This looks at whether or not the workers freely chose to be employed at the location, and is the true indicator of modern slavery.

Scored by two issues, child labour and forced, bonded or prison labour, both issues are scored on a scale of evidence for employment not being freely chosen via perceived opinion, to exemplar where formal management system are in place for each worker, documenting name, national reference number, contract of employment etc.

7. Empowerment This is a measure of whether the worker has a voice with no consequences and whether they can join a labour organisation such as a Trade Union with the right to collective bargaining.

Evidence of empowerment would suggest a very low risk of modern slavery.

The measure is split into two issues; the first being Freedom of Association and the right to collective bargaining and the second is on levels of discrimination.

9. Governance This is a measure of the overall transparency of the supplier, that it is a legal entity with ownership clearly defined, and that it has management control with documentation and policies with management systems. A lack of evidence in governance may indicate issues with employment rights and potentially modern slavery.

10. Corruption and bribery This is a measure of the supplier’s awareness, understanding and implementation of standards on corruption and bribery. The highest level of compliance would be the supplier prohibiting these activities with documented evidence including such things as ‘whistle blowing’.

The detailed scoring breakdown of each of the 10 measures not only illustrates how Marshalls scores against the 10 criteria, but also against the score of the industry cluster – where other UK stone distributors draw from. The basic score consists of a simple visual rating, enabling a very quick and easily understood comparator.

Marshalls is trying to present more of the real picture to customers. The Ethical Risk Index can enable customers to see what kind of problems might exist in a particular country, and whether a supplier is better or worse than the average in that country. Ethical trade is only going to be successful when consumers are better informed, and the Ethical Risk Index is an important step in educating customers.

Technical Insight: Waterproofing

Long-term function for vital city road link Sika has supplied the concrete repair and total corrosion management system to extend the lifespan of a city centre flyover, with the products’ effective and easy use enabling the vital refurbishment to be carried out with minimal disruption to the thousands of commuters who use the route daily.

A

nlaby Road flyover is a four-lane carriageway road bridge on one of the main commuter routes to Hull Central, spanning the main network rail route into the city centre. The concrete bridge, built in 1964, displayed major signs of carbonation-induced spalling to columns and deck soffits above the rail lines. Contractor, BOSA Contracts, on behalf of Hull City Council, required a practical repair solution which extended the lifespan of one of the city’s arterial routes without impacting on daily road and rail commuter journeys or impeding pedestrians.

Work on the flyover’s repair began in March 2016. The full refurbishment involved structural concrete repairs, corrosion inhibitors, anti-carbonation coatings and safety fencing. Global product manufacturer, Sika, supplied the project’s concrete repair and total corrosion management system.

Richard Snow, Director at BOSA Contracts, said: “Sika products were specified due to their excellent historical performance, giving all those involved in the flyover’s refurbishment peace of mind. As a manufacturer, Sika was able to supply a full range of materials to solve the whole range of repair issues.

“The Sika Monotop range is a particularly good performer when applied to soffits, especially where limited time is a factor.This not only helped coordinate a smooth-running works programme that enabled repairs to be completed to the highest quality and without disruption to vital road and rail routes, it assisted with administrative issues such as Quality Assurance paperwork.”

After the repairs had been carried out, Sika FerroGard 903+ corrosion inhibitor was applied to the areas outside of the repair areas.

The corrosion inhibitor extends the service life of any reinforced concrete structure without the need for actual concrete removal.

Once applied, it penetrates the surface and diffuses in vapour or liquid form to the concrete’s embedded reinforcing bars, forming a protective layer on the steel surface to control corrosion caused by the presence of chlorides as well as by carbonation.

Sika Armorcrete, a one-part, flowable, cementitious, micro-concrete, was then used for shutter and pour repairs to large sections of the supporting columns and piers. For smaller, hand-placed repairs, the majority of which were carried out to deck soffits and abutments, Sika MonoTop-610, a highperformance, cementitious steel reinforcement

protective coating and bonding primer, was applied in preparation for concrete repair mortar, Sika MonoTop-615.

To all sections of the structure, except the lower supporting column sections, Sikagard 552W, a one-component, water-dispersed, adhesion-promoting primer, and Sikagard-550 W Elastic, a solvent-free, crack-bridging, plasto-elastic anti-carbonation coating, were applied.The lower column sections were coated with Sika Poxitar, an epoxy-anthracene oil-combination coating with mineral fillers, to form tough, splash protection against passing traffic.

The flyover repairs, along with the corrosion management system, were completed in October 2016.These were finalised to the client’s strict deadline and full satisfaction.The superb works programme drawn-up by BOSA, which included staggered shift patterns and out-of-hours working, ensured travel disruption was minimalised for road and rail commuters.

Thanks to the superb experience and diligence of BOSA’s on-site teams and the proven quality of Sika’s concrete repair and total corrosion management system, Anlaby Road flyover has been given a new lease of life, allowing it to remain a landmark part of Hull city centre’s travel network for many years to come.

Considering the significant amount of our time we spend outside of our own homes – in offices and in public buildings such as schools, hospitals and shops – we’d hope that all the materials and equipment of which they’re comprised are safe from fire hazards and other risks, writes Koen ter Linde, Vice President of enterprise in Europe, CommScope.

T

he Construction Product Directive (CPD), introduced by European regulators in 1989, and later becoming the Construction Product Regulation (CPR), directly addressed this concern by classifying the fire safety of all construction products.

Power and communications cables permanently installed in buildings and civil works were accepted as construction products in 2006, leading to the publication of CPD Euroclassification for cables (2006/751/ EC) in the Official Journal of the European Union and, later, in EN 13501-6.

Further classification of how products such as communications cables react to fire was published 10 years after this, and a date for the mandatory CE Marking of cables was set as July 1st, 2017.

Since 1st July, a ‘hierarchy’ of cable fire requirements has been in place for the first time in Europe, from Aca to Fca. CommScope’s own HELIAX and CNR cables, for example, are compliant to the System 3, Class D rating.

It’s worth noting, however, that as CPR is only applicable to those power and communications cables permanently installed in buildings, patch cords and work area cords, for example, are excluded from the regulation.

Adoption across the continent Given the size and complexity of the EU, it was impractical to develop requirements consistent across the entire continent. Each member country is, therefore, free to adopt the Euroclass it deems to be most suitable while observing the following conditions:

Safeguarding against risks Mandatory CE Marking of cables will require a certain amount of investment from building owners and compliance teams. Indeed, complying with the CPR is likely to result in an increase in costs around the manufacture and testing of communications cables – particularly when it comes to the higher Euroclasses.

Safety is, of course, of the utmost importance, and all manufacturing facilities serving the European market must, therefore, have been audited and approved by notified bodies. In addition, the building industry must only work with vendors that have carried out extensive testing with notified bodies, and that can provide the proper Declarations of Performance for their cabling products.

While it may appear common sense, health and safety should remain at the top of the agenda for anyone involved in the provision and installation of power and communication cables. Fortunately, abiding with this latest iteration of the CPR will go a long way to safeguarding us from the risk of fires and other emergencies.

Ensuring compliance with the EU’s changing cabling regulation

Essentially, different countries within the EU may require cables with different Euroclassification for use in the same installation environment. Hospitals in some countries may require the installation of Euroclass B2ca cables, for example, while Cca cables may be required in others.

Furthermore, to ensure that it’s easily identifiable, every product brought into the EU market must carry the CE label referring to the applicable Euroclass.

Architecture at speed Road and rail tunnels are not often associated with inspirational design but this tunnel portal building in Austria, defined by perforated Nordic Brass copper alloy from Aurubis, heralds a new role in this typology for architects.

Competition-winning design This impressive engineering feat is celebrated by new gateway structures for the tunnels, to an award-winning design by Architect, Peter Riepl.The architectural competition sought to unite a cluster of highly diverse, existing utilitarian buildings, together with new facilities to generate a clear, impressive visual image for travellers passing through.

The new design reduces the complex to two elements: monolithic concrete structures and transparent vertical Nordic Brass screens.

The highly architectonic approach taken is unusual for projects of this kind, suggesting a new building typology in celebration of transport infrastructure.

Of course, precedents can be found with the architectural treatments of 19th-century railway tunnel entrances presented as Gothic castles or classical edifices. But at Bosruck, the architecture is thoroughly contemporary. A single concrete portal spans the whole building with a demonstrative lightness, mirrored by two ‘flying roofs’ announcing the entrance and exit tunnels.

Theatrical screens Then, the design strategy becomes almost literally theatrical. The series of screens – or ‘stage flats’ – effectively conceal the complexity of the buildings and equipment essential to the tunnel’s operation and safety. They accommodate and disguise a variety of openings, and also form the prominent central tower for the tunnel’s ventilation system.

ne of the most important and heavily-used connections to south east Europe, the 5.5km-long Bosruck Tunnel passes through the Ennstal Alps, connecting upper Austria with Styria.The original, two-way traffic tunnel has been extensively renovated and a second new tunnel built alongside. Reopened at the end of 2015, the tunnels now form part of the A9 Pyhrn motorway used by around 18,000 vehicles each day and are fitted with the most modern safety equipment.

Design & Desire The Bosruck Tunnel Portal has recently been shortlisted for the 2017 European Copper in Architecture Awards

Dramatic experience The rhythms of the vertical Nordic Brass screens highlight the dramatic experience for travellers as they approach and drive through the building via the flying rooftopped entrance and exit galleries. Here, intermittent Nordic Brass screen facades moderate the daylight, creating transition spaces between inside and out. This light touch approach belies the permanent nature of the structures and technical demands of such a challenging environment.

The architect’s selection of metal references the long history of iron processing in the Eisenwurzen area located nearby. But Nordic Brass was also specifically chosen for its long-life and durability, including resistance to road salt, after running a corrosion trial simulating the exposure of the material over 30 years. The Bosruck Tunnel Portal has recently been shortlisted for the 2017 European Copper in Architecture Awards.

Nordic copper and alloys Nordic Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc.

Initially with a distinctive golden-yellow colour, when exposed to the atmosphere, the surface begins to darken within weeks and can change to a dark brown in around a year. The latest addition to the range is a pre-weathered surface for Nordic Brass.

Nordic Brass is produced by Aurubis, part of a world-leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. Other traditional alloys include Nordic Bronze, initially with a similar colour to standard copper. When exposed to the atmosphere, the surface gradually changes to a stable, dark chocolate brown. Aurubis also offers the innovative Nordic Royal, an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving it a rich golden through-colour and making it very stable.

It has a thin protective oxide layer containing all three alloy elements when produced.As a result, the surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen over time, as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the atmosphere to give a matt finish. Unlike most copper alloys and surfaces, it does not develop a blue or green patina.

Architectural copper Copper is one of our oldest building materials with unique properties. Its surface finishes develop naturally over time, unlike other materials that aim to copy them.The Aurubis architectural range provides instant surfaces that otherwise would take years to develop in the atmosphere – particularly on vertical facades.The processes involved are generally similar to those taking place over time in the open, utilising copper mineral compounds, not alien chemical processes.

Essentially, they bring forward environmental changes without taking away the integrity of copper as a natural, living material.All these surfaces form an integral part of the copper, generally continuing to change over time, and are not lifeless coatings or paint.The material is easily bent and formed, and there are no limitations on the length of copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets.

Made up of Nordic Brass cassettes with varied perforations, profiled and arranged to reflect the verticality of the surroundings, the screens impose a visual order and clarity in front of these disparate elements. But, at the same time, they retain glimpses of what is beyond together with a transparency and openness symbolic of the now barrier-free connection between the two federal provinces.

Boudewijn Tuinenburg, Managing Director of leading lead sheet manufacturer Midland Lead, discusses why lead offers such a magnificent finishing touch to a build and highlights the importance of using patination oil to perfect the job.

A

esthetically speaking, lead’s natural, weathered appearance ticks all the right boxes with architects and building contractors. Its look perfectly complements the built environment, whether in a heritage or contemporary setting, and is often cited as one of the main reasons it’s specified.

In the case of heritage projects, old existing lead is often removed from a roof, recast and then reinstalled. This ensures a building’s historical continuity, a wonderfully authentic finish and provides it with a new lease of life. Similarly, with contemporary projects, lead is prized for its natural, stylish look, such as is the case with the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, which is famously wrapped in a large lead facade, displaying an air of quality and distinction.

Praised as much for its flexibility as it is for its looks, many in the industry also appreciate the fact that as a malleable material, lead can adapt to almost any area of a building; it can be used on flat roofs, pitched roofs, vertical cladding, dormer windows, soffits, gutters and even used to create intricate lead motifs.

While offering the perfect finishing touch in its own right, lead’s impressive aesthetic qualities can, in fact, be further enhanced with the help of patination oil. The go-to product for professional lead workers, those who use patination oil demonstrate a real attention to detail and understanding of the material.

Enhancing the natural lustre of lead, using a coat of patination oil really does make a difference. Not only giving newly-laid leadwork an attractive grey shine, a layer of patination oil seals the surface of the lead from damp, avoiding runoff and preventing staining on the adjacent brickwork and tiles adjoining the leadwork.

To get the best results, patination oil should be applied at the end of a day’s work on a clean and dry surface, and is a relatively quick and cheap job when compared with the time-consuming alternative of trying to remove stains with cleaning gel at a later phase. After thoroughly shaking the bottle according to the product’s instructions, simply soak a clean cloth with the oil and apply one coat, working from the top of the lead panel downwards. It’s important not

to use a scrubbing or circular motion when applying the oil, and to only apply one coat.

When fitted and treated correctly, it’s not surprising to learn that this adaptable, aesthetically-pleasing and long-lasting material has been utilised for the past six thousand years. And we have no doubt that lead will continue to bring a wonderfully natural weathered finish to both historic and modern builds for thousands more years to come.

Old materials still working well in the present day Natural building materials used thousands of years ago are growing in popularity today. The most dramatic are marble and terrazzo and it is very easy to see why these high-performance, aesthetically-led products are still so popular and specification demand for them is escalating.

he National Federation of Terrazzo Marble & Mosaic Specialists is the national organisation keen to maintain and improve the standards of craftsmanship and technical control on which the industry depends. Its founding aims remain to this day and apply equally to mosaic, marble, granite, limestone and quartz, which require similar but subtly different degrees of craft skill together with quality in execution and deep knowledge of the materials and how they perform.To further the aims of the federation, technical advice and assistance with specifications is freely

given. Detailed specification sheets covering terrazzo, marble and mosaic are all available for the serious specifier and designer.

The ability to embed colour and enjoy freedom of design, as well as create patterns and forms, is limited only by the designer’s imagination. Marble is an extremely versatile material and its suitability for floors, walls, stair treads, risers and skirtings means that it will also be used extensively within projects to create visual impact. Centuries-old terrazzo is an extremely versatile material which can be applied in situ to floors and other surfaces

Other materials Granite is a hard and adaptable material and more suitable for worktops and counters, being denser than marble and thereby more resistant to staining. It is also suitable for paving and cladding in tile or slab form. Modern cutting methods enable granite to be cut thinner making it more competitive in price and reducing shipping costs. Various finishes can be applied to the surface, as with most hard surfaces, to suit the area to which it is applied.

As many will know, mosaics have been used for over 2000 years. It is a work of art, adorned with coloured fragments, known as tesserae, made from various different materials. The most popular form comprises all types of minerals and rocks and also glass, mainly consisting of coloured smalti (opaque glass paste) and precious smalti (gold and silver).The creation of a mosaic work of art requires design skills, innovation and traditional craftsmanship using methods that have changed little over the years.

Centuries-old terrazzo is also an extremely versatile material which can be applied in situ to floors and other surfaces, made into tiles or cast into moulds of almost any shape. It is probably the most widely used of all hard floorings, certainly in heavy traffic areas, such as shopping malls, airports, railway and underground stations, hospitals and supermarkets. It can be equally formed into staircases, skirtings, column bases and almost any shape and used on walls.

Including the standard products, terrazzo offers an extraordinary design freedom with its physical shape, patterns and colours all able to be customised to order. Federation member, Quiligotti, explains that different levels of finish can be specified ranging from honed to polished, while bespoke designs with logos and decorative graphics are possible with water jet-cutting. All this means that the smooth seamless surfaces are ideal for wheeled and the heaviest traffic applications. Its hardwearing performance will outlast most flooring materials and provide the lowest possible life cycle cost.

London-based architecture practice, Stanton Williams, has transformed the existing Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes – an exemplary expression of the city’s civic and cultural pride. Located in the heart of a residential quarter in the city, the Musée des Beaux-Arts consisted of the 19th-century ‘Palais’ and 17th-century oratory chapel.

contemporary art and an archive facility with a public library. A new basement underneath the Palais has been created to house an auditorium, educational spaces and additional exhibition spaces. A fully integrated landscape design has also been implemented around the museum, with a new sculpture garden located within the urban block.

Located in the Salle Blanche, ‘L’epopée d’un Project, 2009-2017’ will run for six months from the official opening.The exhibition allows visitors to immerse themselves in the project by covering the entire six-year period of planning and construction through the display of development models from the competition stage, to information about the methodologies and museography involved.

The exhibition will also include previously unseen photographs of the construction process, which reveal the complex aspects of the transformation.

Two films will feature in the exhibition; the first documents the entire design process behind the new museum and will include sketches, drawings and model-making; the second film, by Studio Cullen Williams, will use the method of time-lapse film to capture

the journey of light as it travels through the museum, galleries and translucent marble facade.

On the occasion of the opening, French publisher, Archibooks, will launch a dedicated monograph on Stanton Williams’ transformation as part of its new series: L’esprit du Lieu.The book introduces the many facets of the building for the first time.

In extensive texts, Stanton Williams, the Mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland, the Director of the Musée d’arts de Nantes, Sophie Lévy, and consultants Max Fordham and Artelia will describe the concept as well as the content-related and artistic aspects of this new museum.Archival imagery and numerous illustrations complete this overview.

Botanic Garden pools blossom thanks to refurbishment scheme

Here John McMullan, Commercial Manager at EPDM roofing and lining specialist, Firestone, discusses the recent refurbishment of the ornamental pools at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE), using the company’s PondGard EPDM liner.

dinburgh is a city famed for its elegance and culture and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE), located just a mile outside the city, is part of that rich heritage.

Much more than a park, RBGE is a global centre of scientific and horticultural

research and achievement covering a landscaped site that spans more than 70 acres and dates back to 1670. It has become a key visitor attraction for professional gardeners, keen amateurs and those who simply want to wander around the many unique features, which include the largest

collection of wild-origin Chinese plants outside China, a world-famous ‘Rock Garden’ with more than 5000 alpine plants and the tallest Victorian glasshouse in Britain.

Ornamental gateway For most visitors, a must-visit attraction is RBGE’s John Hope Gateway, which provides a biodiversity and information centre, with a ground floor exhibition space and first-floor restaurant.

The exhibition space and restaurant overlook a trio of terraced ornamental pools which were designed to cascade down into each other. However, pipework problems had prevented these pools from fulfilling their design intent and the lining material used had also failed.The ponds had originally been constructed to abut the edge of the building, which had also created challenges with cleaning the floor-to-ceiling windows of the exhibition space.

The combination of all these factors led to a decision to commission Water Gems (Alba) to carry out a refurbishment project that involved draining the pools, replacing the existing lining with Firestone’s PondGard lining and making changes to the pipework and pumping system.The scheme also involved the creation of a narrow walkway between the John Hope Gateway building facade and the water to enable future window cleaning and maintenance.

Complex geometry

Water Gems (Alba) carried out a refurbishment project that involved draining the pools, replacing the existing lining with Firestone’s PondGard lining and making changes to the pipework and pumping system

The existing lining, a PVC-P system, had not been flexible enough to cope with the pool’s complex shape leading to failure of the joints and fixings. After draining the pool, the Water Gems team removed the gravel that had been used to ballast the existing pond lining, which was then stripped out.

Complete lining solution The Water Gems team worked with Firestone to pre-calculate an optimised configuration for the PondGard lining material, which was cut and laid into the cavity with a 150mm lap on all joints.

The joints were sealed using Firestone’s QuickSeam 3" Splice Tape, a self-adhesive tape that provides a permanent watertight seal between each section of liner.

Firestone Bonding Adhesive was used to adhere the liner to the concrete walls around the lower section of the pool and the Water Gems team used stainless steel straps connected to the granite walls at the top of the pools to allow the liner to be folded back onto itself and provide a robust mechanical fixing solution.

In the areas where the liner follows the cascade into the next pool, the detailing was completed using Firestone QuickSeam FormFlash, a factory-laminated selfadhesive flashing tape.

Long-term performance Thanks to the refurbishment project, the ornamental pools at RBGE’s John Hope Gateway are now cascading beautifully, creating a feature that benefits this key viewpoint out towards the parkland.

With a service life of at least 40 years, the EPDM liner will retain its flexibility and waterproofing performance over time for RBGE visitors to enjoy for generations.

The Water Gems team then excavated the pipework, cleaning and reconfiguring the existing pipe to provide a more effective solution for controlling the water flow and installing a new overflow pipe and filtration system, which was fitted with a timer to ensure energy-efficient operation.

With upgrades to the pipework layout completed, the Water Gems team backfilled onto the refurbished pipework then laid a geotextile membrane into the pond cavity, prior to installation of the new liner.

The flexibility of Firestone’s PondGard EPDM lining system, supplied through UK distributor Gordon Low Products (an authorised distributor for Firestone PondGard EPDM), and its proven durability and service life as an extremely robust material made it ideally suited to the challenging installation. At just 1mm thick, it could be folded into the corners and awkward angles of the pool’s complex geometry easily, without any risk of tearing or cracking. It also offered a chemicallyinert, UV stable and temperature-stable solution that will resist algae growth and microorganisms.

Airbloc’s electrically heated CMS1000HE12-SM unit delivers a powerful downflow of heated air to create comfortable conditions for staff and customers

Airbloc delivers comfortable environment for Glaswegian diners When launching its new top-flight steak restaurant Porter & Rye in Glasgow, owner Kained Holdings chose a natural, rustic look for the decor. However, an influx of cold air every time the door opened was definitely not on the menu. Airbloc was called in to provide a HVAC solution that would keep draughts at bay and ensure a comfortable environment for diners.

orter & Rye specialises in quality dry-aged meats and classic mixed drinks.The restaurant occupies the ground floor of an elegant Georgian building on Argyle Street, close

to the bustling West End, and incorporates a mezzanine. It is in an exposed location, in as much as cold air is channelled along the street from Kelvin Grove Park directly towards the entrance.

For improved energy management, the air curtain was installed in conjunction with Airbloc’s class-leading SmartElec controller

Airbloc, which is part of Nortek Global HVAC, supplied an air curtain from its AC Chassis range. The electrically heated CMS1000HE12-SM unit delivers a powerful downflow of heated air to create comfortable conditions for staff and customers. It is a highly energy-efficient HVAC solution, typically reducing heat loss around an open door by up to 80%.

The CMS air curtain is suitable for a variety of commercial and retail applications and is intended for discreet positioning in suspended ceilings or doorway bulkheads.

However, Kained Holdings – which also operates a Porter & Rye restaurant in Edinburgh and Lebowskis bar in Glasgow – deliberately chose to have the unit in full view.

The owners wanted an ‘industrial look’ to complement the overall decor, which makes a feature of the exposed stone and ironwork. Airbloc, therefore, supplied the unit with an unpainted outlet and grille.

This not only created the aesthetic effect required, but also ensured that the flush, adjustable grille was a perfect match for the restaurant’s frameless glass door.

Mo Clark, Estates Director at Kained Holdings, said: “A warm and welcoming environment is vital if we are to attract and retain customers, so we had to find a way to counteract the cold winds that we experience in the Finneston area of Glasgow.

“The air curtain has solved the problem.

We can’t stop the wind from blowing but, thanks to Airbloc’s solution, there’s no noticeable impact on the comfort of diners when customers enter or leave the restaurant. The unit is economical to run in its own right, and the building’s main heating system doesn’t have to work extra hard, which would result in an increase in our energy bills, to maintain the set temperature.”

The layout of the steelwork and structure of the doorway meant that the air curtain had to be mounted at a high level. This did not pose any difficulties in terms of installation, nor did it have an adverse impact on the effectiveness of the system because the CMS1000HE12-SM unit is suitable for installation at a height of four metres.

For improved energy management, the air curtain was installed in conjunction with Airbloc’s class-leading SmartElec controller.

Incorporating MODBUS protocol and digital sensors, the system allows closer control, enabling end users to save 40-65% on their energy costs.

Mapei used for American School swimming pool

Mapei systems have been installed for the construction of a swimming pool at the American School in London in St John’s Wood. EP Ceramics first installed Mapei’s Planitop Fast 330, a quick-setting, fibrereinforced cementitious mortar.The base of the pool was then formed using Mapei Topcem and bonded using Mapei Planicrete.

Once the pool tank had been formed, the Mapei Mapelastic was applied.The Mapenet 150 reinforcing mesh was installed between two coats combined with the Mapeband at the joints to reinforce the waterproofing layer. Once dry, the ceramic tiles were then installed using Keraflex Maxi S1 adhesive and the joints finished with the highly water and abrasion resistant Ultracolor Plus.

Manchester-based vinyl flooring manufacturer, Polyflor, recently donated Polysafe safety flooring to the new RSPCA Bury & Oldham facility at Strinesdale Country Park, Oldham.

Stone & Ceramic surfaces get FILA treatment at 190 Strand FILA surface treatments have been specified by Stone & Ceramic for its most extensive project to date at 190 Strand. The flagship development, by St Edward, includes a collection of bespoke suites, penthouses and apartments set in London’s cultural heartland.

FILAPROJECT worked alongside Stone & Ceramic to provide ‘initial clean’ and maintenance solutions for the multiple tile designs specified, including a dramatic stone feature wall within the development’s private spa complex.

Situated within Westminster’s worldfamous Strand, the development spans six iconic buildings, designed by Grid Architects and set within a private, landscaped square.

Natural stone and porcelain surfaces feature throughout the luxurious kitchens and bathrooms, and residents’ business and leisure suites. Stone & Ceramic’s installation includes mosaics and porcelain tiles for the stunning pool surround and stone for the imposing 70m2 feature wall. A variety

of porcelain and natural surfaces were also installed throughout ‘The Colonnade’ business centre, including a 5m-long stone feature desk.

Working alongside Stone & Ceramic, FILAPROJECT recommended a range of treatments for the different surfaces and their specific locations. They included concentrated acid detergent, FILA Deterdek, which has a safe, buffered formulation; degreasing and stain removing FILAPS87; universal, pH-neutral FILACLEANER; organic stain remover, FILASR95, and water-based gel cleaner, FILANOPAINT STAR. All treatments provided high performance whilst safeguarding the surface characteristics.

A divided church Redlands Parish Church in Bristol has recently undertaken a £1.9m redevelopment, providing the community with a suite of three modern, interconnecting halls. Partitioning specialist, Style, was tasked with future-proofing the facility by installing a combination of moveable walls that would allow the space to be opened out to seat up to 280 people, or divided to accommodate the needs of different groups and events.

A fully automatic Skyfold wall descends from the ceiling to create a firm divide with exceptional acoustic privacy whilst two DORMA partitioning systems work together to further divide this extensive facility.

“Over recent years, we have built up considerable expertise in adding flexibility to community halls such as this one and we understand the diverse groups they often have to accommodate,” explains Julian Sargent, Style’s Group Managing Director.

Architect practice Christensen & Co, which designed a new and very inviting ice-skating rink in Ørestad – a fast-developing suburb of Copenhagen – used a popular and very

The construction industry’s drive towards considering lifetime structural performance, rather than just the cost of the construction itself, is having an impact on attitudes towards product selection and implementation. Toby Champion, Commercial Director at Newton Waterproofing Systems, considers the motivations behind this, and the part that waterproofing has to play.

W

hilst consideration of a structure’s lifetime performance has always been essential, it’s only in recent years that it has developed into a critical focus. The benefits of modern technology have resulted in industry-wide campaigns to implement new processes, such as BIM.

The campaign has significant support, both from industry institutions that are observing “significant efficiencies and improved asset value”,1 and from outsiders, including the Government’s drive to define “crossGovernment principles for setting functional requirements based on whole life value for money and centred on performance”.2

These straightforward benefits – improved efficiency, sustainability, cost and performance – reinforce the focus on the lifetime of a structure, and new technologies such as BIM are inexplicably linked to achieving them.

Simply through its implementation, BIM creates a previously non-existent culture within which it is possible to ascertain “the consequences of design-stage decisions over life cycle performance”,1 and therefore overcome the “risk that the quest for lowest initial capital cost will take precedence”.2

How does this relate to waterproofing?

Frequently, either too little thought is given too late to a structure’s waterproofing requirements, or it is not credited with providing tangible benefit to the end-user.

The usual consequence of either scenario is that waterproofing is either excluded, or inappropriate solutions are implemented in a last-ditch attempt to achieve a watertight structure, generally on an unrealistic budget.

However, this blase approach can have dire ramifications, and in worst-case scenarios significant water ingress will occur, causing irreparable damage to internal environments.

In these situations, even basic remedial work is costly, and when considering the potential damage in an inhabited internal environment, consequential losses can be astronomical.

Whilst the consideration and installation of a waterproofing solution at construction stage usually adds cost to a project, it is far better to install comprehensive protection as part of a BIM-enabled, integrated and collaborative process with one eye on the lifetime performance of the structure, than it is to try and do so once the damage is already done.

Astraseal Commercial uses REHAU GENEO for £1m landmark Berkeley Homes project Astraseal Commercial completed the latest waterfront phase of Berkeley Homes’ landmark Royal Arsenal Riverside development in Woolwich, using windows and doors fabricated in the innovative REHAU GENEO six-chamber fibre composite system.

Berkeley Homes switched to REHAU GENEO from the aluminium and timber composite systems which had been used on the earlier phases of the project because REHAU’s commercial team were able to work with Astraseal to convince the company of the thermal, acoustic and security benefits of the Passivhaus-certified and fully recyclable GENEO window system.

The 86mm GENEO system is among the most energy-efficient profile systems available – with Uw values from 1.1W/m2K for low-energy houses, to 0.73W/m2K for

Passivhaus installations without the need for high-specification glazing. It also offers break-in protection up to resistance Class 2 without reinforcement, Class 3 with reinforcement, and sound insulation to Class 5 without steel reinforcement.

One of the key factors for Berkeley Homes was that the REHAU GENEO system has slim sightlines of just 115mm, replicating the look of aluminium and giving residents of the £440,000 to £750,000 apartments almost uninterrupted views of the Thames. It also has inherent strength because it is extruded using the

RAU-FIPRO fibre-reinforced composite material which is similar to the material used in aircraft construction and Formula 1 race cars. This means it could be used to fabricate windows and doors at Royal Arsenal Riverside with full-height glazing up to 2.3m and full widths of up to 1.2m without the need for steel reinforcement.

The secret of selling virtually anything is the way in which the goods are presented. When it comes to the retailing of more upmarket and luxury goods, a building’s interior design and ambience are also vital considerations.

Norcros Pro Gyp-Base Fast Track Sealer enables faster, simpler tiling onto anhydrite screeds Norcros Adhesives, manufacturer of tiling adhesives, grouts and surface preparation products, speeds up tiling onto green screeds with its latest system solution.

Pro Gyp-Base Fast Track Sealer greatly reduces the minimum drying times normally applicable for anhydrite (calcium sulphate) screeds. The new product comprises a three-stage preparation system for fixing ceramic and porcelain tiles onto screeded surfaces. It is sold as a kit containing all the elements necessary to achieve a successful bond, including a primer, moisture suppressant and gritted primer.

Used together, the system allows for fasttrack tile installation without detracting from the overall screed strength. It also avoids the need for a special tile-to-gypsum adhesive.

Pro Gyp-Base Fast Track Sealer can be used on either heated or unheated anhydrite screeds. In an ambient temperature of 20ºC, drying times are down to two hours for the first primer coat and 24-hours for the second. The moisture suppressant and gritted primer require a total of three hours

drying time before tiling commences. Screeds need to be a minimum of seven days old and have a maximum relative humidity of 95%.

After drying, tiles may be fixed with the new Norcros Pro Gyp-Base Adhesive.This is a white cement-based, flexible, fibre-reinforced, thinbed cementitious adhesive specially formulated for fixing fully vitrified porcelain, ceramic and stone tiles to Norcros Pro Gyp-Base Fast Track Anhydrite Screed Sealer. It has a setting time of three hours at 20ºC permitting early trafficking of the tiled installation.The adhesive has excellent thermal ageing properties making it suitable for use on heated floors.

They are suitable for use with all types of wall and floor tiles, including natural stone, especially where a narrow fine-textured joint is required.

Containing reinforcing polymers, the new grouts have a high flexural strength, meaning they are suitable for use in areas where movement of the substrate or vibration can occur, such as in heated floors or where tiling has been applied to wooden flooring.

RECYFIX MONOTEC drains outdoor surfaces at Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las school The Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las Primary School, Swansea, has currently 535 pupils from year one to six as well as reception and nursery classes. The school site is split into four main areas. Having a large gymnasium and a separate school canteen, there are plenty of outdoor playing areas including a hard surface yard, an enclosed area for the nursery and expansive areas of grassland.

Hauraton introduced the RECYFIX MONOTEC surface drainage system in January 2016.The Lôn Las school joins numerous installations successfully completed in the UK. The MONOTEC 1m-long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding.The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions

to strong sunlight, including the ultra violet spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt.

As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. The future is chrome-free The most important stage in powder coating is the metal pre-treatment. No matter how high the quality of the final powder coating, it will not produce a long-lasting, high-performance barrier on the metal surface unless that surface is thoroughly cleaned, and etched. Pretreatment is a very serious subject and the chemicals employed in this process are taken equally seriously.

The new coatings, aptly named Evolution, form part of the company’s unique Collections range of high-performance powder coatings. In the natural environment, oxidation occurs on the surface of metals such as copper and bronze, creating beautiful patinas.

Attractive though the patinas are, the metal itself is not protected; it is being oxidised and, therefore, its strength and other inherent properties are compromised. Evolution offers the best of both worlds – stunningly unusual, natural-looking surfaces produced by highperformance polyester resin powder coatings which give excellent weather and abrasion protection to the metal.

Evolution finishes are tactile with a thickness in excess of 80 microns and have gloss levels of 10 to 40% (dependent on the finish) which show excellent gloss retention. Colour retention tests demonstrate high UV light stability with a Delta E change of between two and eight units after two years of natural exposure conditions. After rain, there is no staining of surrounding materials unlike natural oxidation products which leach from the oxidised metal.

Evolution can be applied to most metal substrates including aluminium, mild steel and galvanised steel.The powders are all Qualicoat Class 1 approved and a 25-year guarantee is offered in conjunction with Powdertech standard terms.The versatility of Evolution makes it suitable for external and internal fabrications, ranging from large facade panels, to small decorative elements.

James Latham supplies plywood for world-first exhibition at the V&A James Latham has supplied plywood for the interior of an exhibition about the eclectic history of the sheet material which is currently taking place at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London – known as the world’s leading museum of art and design.

lywood: Material of the Modern World’, which runs until 12th November 2017, explores the innovative use of plywood in objects ranging from vehicles to furniture and architecture to graphic design – offering a new perspective of this versatile material.

James Latham’s unrivalled knowledge and passion for timber, and in particular, its incredible history of selling this product – which began more than two and a half centuries ago – and included supplying plywood for the manufacture of Spitfire aircrafts during World War II, has close links to the exhibition which includes the story of the fastest and highest-flying aeroplane of WWII, the de Havilland Mosquito.

Other highlights will include a moulded plywood leg splint designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1942, surfboards and designs for mass-produced US prefabricated housing.

‘Plywood: Material of the Modern World’ is co-curated by Christopher Wilk, Keeper of Furniture,Textiles and Fashion at the V&A, and Elizabeth Bisley, Curator in the Department of Furniture,Textiles and Fashion at the V&A. The exhibition brings together significant new research with new acquisitions and objects that have never before been on public display.

It will take visitors through plywood’s many reputational transformations – from a cheap

product that was often hidden or maligned for its inferiority to solid timber, to the material prized by mid-century modernists and by today’s flourishing maker movement.
