FOREWORD We are excited to bring the second edition of CONNECTED Columbus Magazine to our growing city, sharing the diverse businesses, people, and resources that are present right under our noses!

Much of today’s media is focused on creating drama and division because it creates “engagement.” But we believe there is so much good happening every single day, and that is where we choose to focus our efforts!

By focusing on positive and inspirational content, we can create more than just engagement, we can create unity and community!

The Fall 2022 issue focuses on serving others. We believe that giving back is a core principle of creating a unified community, the more we help each other, the better our city becomes. We spotlight nonprofits in this issue and discuss the impact they have on the community, as well as provide tips for how to showcase your business’ own methods of giving back and why giving back is good for your health. Whether you donate funds, time, energy, or services, giving back is an important part of building a strong community, and your customers want to know how you do it!

The back of the magazine contains a wealth of resources in the form of CONNECTED Networking Group Ambassadors who are always happy to serve and make an impact.

We also included a business directory as a resource for you and others needing any specific products or services.

FUN FALL EVENTS

by Bryan Curtiss 2022 is winding down. As the days get shorter, Festival Season winds down, and as soon as you know it, the Holiday Season will be quickly approaching us.

From Fall Festivals, such as The Circleville Pumpkin Show and Columbus Italian Festival, to the Holiday Lights Displays at places like Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo, Easton, Alum Creek State Park, and The Grand Illumination at the Scioto Mile and Columbus Commons, there are still events and things to do around town, as the days grow shorter and colder.

Here are some of the events around the community that are taking place, as we round out the year!

OCTOBER 6

THE BIG TABLE

Back in person for the first time since August 2019, The Big Table is a day of community building, networking, and conversations around the community. There are Tables hosted by partner organizations, and individuals are welcome to have their own.

7 THE COLUMBUS ITALIAN FESTIVAL

Lincoln & Hamlet Streets, Italian Village

The Columbus Italian Festival returns in full to Italian Village, at Lincoln and Hamlet Streets, surrounding St. John the Baptist Church. The Italian Festival Parade returns on October 9, as marching bands, organizations, and politicians march through the streets of the Short North to the Festival.

14 FRANKLINTON FRIDAYS 15-16 URBAN SCRAWL Urban Scrawl takes place for the first time in mid-October, after 15 years as a late Summer event. This year, the October Franklinton Fridays will kick off the weekend.

And then on Saturday and Sunday, local artists will create a mural panel live in the Franklinton Arts District.

Those panels will later be auctioned off at Art for Franklinton in the Spring of 2023.

DAY OF THE DEAD/DIOS DE LOS MUERTOS FESTIVAL Greenlawn Cemetery, Southwest Columbus

The Day of the Dead Festival takes place at Greenlawn Cemetery, hosted by the Latino Arts of the Humanities, carrying on the theme of the Latin American tradition of honoring the Day of the Dead.

WORTHINGTON MARKET DAY High Street, between South Street and State Route 161

High Street is closed in Old Worthington for an outdoor flea market, with local businesses, artisans, and organizations have booths along a two-block stretch of High Street.

CHILDREN’S 16 NATIONWIDE HOSPITAL COLUMBUS MARATHON Greenlawn Cemetery, Southwest Columbus

The Columbus Marathon takes place on Sunday October 16, as runners race through the streets of Columbus, Bexley, Upper Arlington, and Grandview Heights. The race benefits Nationwide Children’s Hospital, with each mile marker being dedicated to a patient of Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

CIRCLEVILLE PUMPKIN SHOW Downtown Circleville

Named “The Largest Free Festival in the World”, the Circleville Pumpkin Show kicks off on the third Wednesday of every October, celebrating all things Pumpkin, down in Downtown Circleville.

22 HIGHBALL HALLOWEEN

For the first time since 2019, HighBall Halloween will return to High Street as Halloween Block Party meet Fashion Show, as local Fashion Designers compete for a Prize during a Runway Competition featuring Couture Costumes.

NOVEMBER

10 MILVETS VETERAN’S DAY PARADE Downtown Columbus

Columbus will honor the Military with the annual MilVets Parade through the streets of Downtown Columbus. The parade will start at High Street and Nationwide Boulevard, and end at the National Veteran’s Memorial and Museum, with organizations and marching bands participating.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS 20 GAHANNA CELEBRATION Creekside District, Gahanna

The streets of Downtown Gahanna light up for the Holidays at one of the first local holiday lights festivities of the holiday season.

DECEMBER 2 MISTLETOE MARKET

Grove City Town Center, Grove City

The Grove City Town Center District rings in the holidays with an outdoor street market, similar to the outdoor German Holiday Markets. The Christmas Lights Parade and Tree Lighting are part of the festivities.

3 SHORT NORTH HOLIDAY HOP High Street between Goodale St. and Fifth Ave., Short North

A tradition for over 35 years on the first Saturday of the month, Short North galleries and businesses will be open to ring in the holidays along the Short North Pole (High Street).

4 VILLAGE LIGHTS German Village

The streets of German Village are lit with luminaries, as the shops and restaurants of the 233-acre South Columbus historic neighborhood are open late on the first Sunday of December.

High Street between Stafford Avenue and South Street, Worthington

Businesses in Old Worthington stay open late to celebrate the holidays in Old Worthington with deals.

9-11 FESTIVUS 400 Square

The December Franklinton Fridays kicks off a weekend celebration of the “Airing of Grievances”, while celebrating the holiday season with an open house of 400 Square in the Franklinton Arts District.

There is never a shortage of things happening around the Central Ohio area, especially as the year winds down to a close. Experience Columbus, which is the Columbus area’s Visitors and Conventions Bureau is a wonderful resource for people looking for exciting things to do in the Columbus Metro area, from museums and hidden gems, to festivals and concerts.

WHY GIVING IS GOOD FOR YOU

by Kathy Binner Anyone can tell that giving helps others. Your gift can offer emotional, financial, and other forms of support to your friends and family or any other recipient when you give.

But giving can boost your happiness too.

Studies show that charitable actions can positively affect your health and happiness.

Giving to others makes you feel good about yourself and helps you feel like you belong in the community. How else is giving good for you? Consider these reasons:

1. It makes you feel happy. A Harvard Business School professor observed that giving other people money lifted respondents and increased their happiness more than spending it.

2. Giving gets you more -- and better -relationships. The best proof that giving is good for us comes from a 2008 study by researchers from Harvard and the University of British Columbia.

This conclusion is interesting because you'd think people would be happier spending money on themselves. But giving, instead, gives people greater happiness.

The findings showed that those who reported spending more on others, what the team called “prosocial” spending, also reported a greater level of happiness, while how much they spent on themselves had no impact on happiness.

Another professor at the University of California observed similar results when she asked participants to do five acts of love a week for a month and a half.

These two studies teach us that giving positively affects our mood.

What does this mean? That giving makes us happier -- and more social. That's true.

But it probably comes from the mindset you get because when you give to someone, it changes your perspective.

Your focus changes from what they can do for you to what you can do for them.

As a result, you develop more empathy, and that, in turn, can help you build more meaningful friendships.

That even accounts for other age-related health concerns and habits like smoking and drinking.

3. You get a greater sense of meaning.

Giving also helps us better understand ourselves and our relationship with the world. When you give, you find out what you are truly capable of. You find out you can make a real difference.

5. The act of giving encourages social connection and cooperation. When you give to someone in need, you're more likely to feel closer to that person. That closeness can help you develop deeper relationships, so giving can bring you some relief if you're feeling lonely or isolated.

It can make life more meaningful when we know we're contributing to something bigger than ourselves by giving.

4. It can increase your lifespan. Elderly folks who have tapped into their generosity tend to be healthier than those who don't. So, donating your time, money, or skills can help you live longer.

Recent research shows that people over 55 years who give to charity are more likely to live five years longer than those who don't.

Also, when you give, there's a good chance that you'll get back in return. A lot of research -- including those from sociologists like Brent Simpson and Robb Willer -- concludes that what you give will get rewarded in time.

You may get it back from the person who received the gift, but more often, you'll receive it in other forms.

So, giving doesn’t just help others, it can be good for your health, help you build stronger relationships, and increase the quality of your life.

You may not have the financial resources to give as much as you'd like, but you can choose to provide in other ways, like your time or energy. Volunteering also helps the community and gives you the feeling that you're making a tangible difference.

What’s my calling on Earth?

When I die What do I want to be remembered by?

What legacy do I want to leave behind?

What do I want my dash between to mean?

I tried a multitude of things to discover it What's my future version of me?

How can I uncover my greatness?

What lessons can I pass on to the next generation?

I just can’t put my finger on it What’s this burning desire that lingers?

I tried it all from college to network marketing!

I can’t find my purpose!

Surrounded me with role models and mentors!

Started reading self-help motivational books!

Listening to inspirational speakers From Napoleon Hill's “Think And Grow Rich” to Eric Thomas’ speeches!

Then I finally got the message!

My purpose is to serve!

It’s not about riches, glamour, and fame!

It’s to help others gain Help others grow, I will do so too!

That’s how I can reach others, that’s how I can serve!

Treat everyone like a friend, a family member Like a brother, a sister!

It’s not about the product or service Nor the accumulation of wealth It’s to help fellow man or woman How can I reach them?

What problem can I solve?

On what specific issue can I provide guidance?

How will I serve?

Took out a pen a paper Journaled my own thoughts and struggles Little did I know I was given a special gift Then it hit me!

This is it, this is it!

How I’m going to help others uplift their spirit My true calling, my true purpose!

That’s how I’m going to serve!

I noticed my words have a poetic flow Learned more about word play Joined Toastmasters to read my poetry, Getting feedback on how they were inspired by my speeches That’s how I’m going to reach people!

I know others have been in similar situations!

I can create poetry to serve!

When someone reads my pieces They can be inspired Motivated in life!

If so, my purpose has been served!

You never know who needs an encouraging word or two!

You never know what someone is going through!

Heart could’ve been broken Shattered into a million pieces!

Mind melted from mental and physical abuse!

My words can help heal Past heartaches, past pain!

Maybe reveal their true calling in life Like they did for me!

Help my reader feel a sense of pride and self esteem A sense of purpose for their own being Help them see something in themselves they have never seen!

Spark the brain that changes the world!

Life is short We all need to understand we have a purpose to serve Lend a helping hand to a friend in need!

Show support in them reaching their goals and dreams We all can achieve greatness!

Never too young to start Never too old to finish!

The flame may have diminished My words can spark it back up!

FIVE SURPRISING LIFE LESSONS ABSTRACT ART TAUGHT ME

by Lee Lander I spent 25 years in an unexpected career of logistics and supply chain management because I traded creative passion for predictable income and stability. While there were aspects I really enjoyed, over time I had an undeniable nagging in my soul for something creative. I just couldn’t shake it. I had to smear paint! But I had no idea why or where to start. I knew that creative endeavors were risky, but I had hit an interesting tipping point in life where the fear of regret became bigger than the fear of failure.

I chose acrylics initially, but quickly found myself experimenting wildly with all kinds of mediums. I allowed myself to create with no purpose…in a very childlike manner with no expectation of a specific result. I ended up in the last place I ever saw coming – abstract art. The complete opposite of the world of order, predictability and preciseness that I had been living in the last 20+ years.

Before this point, I hated abstract art. It looked like an unorganized mess with no real thought put into it. I couldn’t identify anything tangible in it. It was so…illogical!

Frustrating. Unsafe even.

But I was being pulled in, so down the rabbit hole I went, and to my surprise I learned some unexpected life lessons along the way. There are so many, but here are the five that really changed the course and direction of my life as I learned to use these principles not only in art, but also in my relationships and other areas.

Being Brave. If you’ve never stared down a 5x6 foot blank canvas and been faced with the huge question of where to start, let me tell you…It can be intimidating.

Creating something out of nothing with no one telling you what to do or how to do it will either scare you into paralysis or invigorate the heck out of you. Over time,

I experienced that shift and where I once thought that art was child’s play, I quickly learned that it was much more than that.

It was about overcoming fear. Doing, not overthinking. Sometimes you just have to make the first mark!

Perspective Shift. Suddenly I was able to appreciate the freedom in the unpredictability of the abstract. Instead of feeling mad, I was now intrigued.

Instead of needing to know what everything is, I started appreciating how it made me feel, and how it influenced an entire room. And more importantly, I allowed myself to be ok with not having all the answers. Pondering all kinds of possibilities of what I was looking at, engaged my brain on a whole different level.

My entire life I was seeking the safety of the known and tangible. But now I understood asking “what if” or even more – leaving some things up to interpretation with no conclusive results is far harder but more rewarding than I could have imagined. That shift from factual to philosophical was a whole different way to see the world!

Letting go of control. I am drawn to certain mediums that are fluid, like resin and alcohol inks, which are unpredictable and hard to control. I have worked hard at learning many techniques, but at best I can only influence and guide them. I learn this same lesson over and over…things always seem to go better when I allow room for the materials to do what they are naturally meant to do instead of trying to over work them. I learned to ask instead of tell. I observed and listened, instead of dictate.

Ultimately, I am surprised by what they do.

Every time.

Dare to fail. It’s easy to get caught up in the results. The final product. The destination. And while goals and results are important, they are not everything. It’s important to play, experiment and risk failure or wasting some product for the sake of learning. I’ve made some of the best discoveries in the moments where I just allowed myself to enjoy the process with no expectation.

Collaboration. When I started out, the terms solo-artist and entrepreneur felt intimidating. But now I realize it’s a very collaborative process. Not just with the materials, but also with clients, mentors, supporters, curators, jurors, fellow artists, teachers, entrepreneurs, etc. They inspire, guide and challenge me, helping take my work from the basement studio to homes, galleries and businesses. This mindset not only makes you better, it makes the wins even sweeter when you are looking around the room at the team that helped you get there.

That was when Artknowlogy was conceptualized. A teambuilding experience that helps companies dig deeper than most. What employees think is a fun or silly painting party, is actually a series of activities that challenge them, provoke reaction, allow observation and promotes discussion.

Instead of taking a personality inventory, you can see in plain sight how a person is wired. It makes a memorable impact.

Instead of having the employees listen to a speech about a certain topic for training, you can have them participate in hands-on activities and analogies leading them to their own conclusion which is more powerful.

All these illustrations, of course, have practical real-life applications. But something else became clear when I started teaching classes. I started noticing how different people, in various stages of life could allow themselves to just play and make some amazing abstract art, while others simply could not stop themselves from creating landscapes or trees or something tangible. Some listened to my instruction, while others went rogue and did whatever they wanted. Some really enjoyed the process and their results, while others were visibly tight, frustrated and unhappy with their product.

For a girl that couldn’t wait to escape, ironically, I am going back INTO the corporate world, but in this whole new capacity. And because I came from it, I know how important it is that I get back in there and help them! Everyone has the capacity for creativity, but so many of us accidentally leave it behind around 5th grade.

But creativity is what makes cures, innovation, and solutions to big world problems. We have to unadult and get back to our 5th grade curiosity again. So next time you think about taking up an art class, I hope you follow through and that you may stumble upon some of these and so many other lessons revealed in the process. But most of all, I hope you have fun and allow room of being enlightened by something bigger than yourself.

DEFINING MOMENTS

"How Scars Led to My Personal Journey to Serve Others" Many of us can point to a defining moment in our lives so powerful that it ends up shaping our character and who we are. These extraordinary experiences often set our priorities and subsequently our life mission.

Over the years I have been recognized for my community service, from mentoring students to saving abused and abandoned animals. I am also honored to have received The Director’s Community Leader Award from the FBI. On the surface, it may seem like a typical overachieving Midwestern story, but if I shared my “defining moment” it would be anything but.

The backdrop is days after Saddam’s invasion of Kuwait.

My family and I lived in the Middle East, and found ourselves amidst the chaos of the looming “Mother of all Wars.” My American mom had just gotten a call from the US embassy in Jordan imploring her to evacuate and come back to the states. Needless to say, she didn’t need much convincing to start packing.

Soon my dad was driving us past military vehicles scattered along the desert road while nervous soldiers manning each checkpoint ushered him to pass as we flashed our American passports, literally our tickets out of the war zone.

On the surface, it may seem like a typical overachieving Midwestern story, but if I shared my “defining moment” it would be anything but.

My mom, brother, and I each had a US passport. But my dad wasn’t a US citizen, and we all knew what it meant.

My parents had made the gutwrenching decision that we would all flee to safety while my dad would have to stay behind. The looming reality weighed heavy on all of us as no one said a word for the duration of the ride.

Once we reached the airport, it was like a scene out of a movie.

Droves of people clamoring to leave, crying, hugging. Emotions were raw and unrestrained as families were broken up, including mine.

Amid the chaos, my dad took me aside, pulled out a picture of himself, and handed it to me.

“Laith, always know that I love you, don’t forget me.”

His tone turned serious as he gave me an unexpected promotion, “You are now in charge of taking care of the family. You take care of your mom and brother, do you hear me?” I clenched his picture (which to this day I carry in my briefcase) and repeatedly promised him that I would.

We said our hurried goodbyes as my mom ushered us to the gate. I looked back and watched the sea of people engulf my dad as we moved further away.

On August 28, 1990, my childhood abruptly ended. I had just turned 13 years old two days earlier, and my priority abruptly shifted to taking care of “us,” putting my family ahead of myself. Eventually, my definition of family evolved to include my close friends, clients, community, and country.

My dad made it through the war, but unfortunately never came to live with us in the United States as my parents went their separate ways. I always kept in touch with him and we are still close, fulfilling my first promise that day.

In a world flush with bad news and an abundance of divisiveness, it’s easy to feel insignificant and helpless to make a tangible positive impact. I’m arguing that we absolutely can - even a small act of kindness can reverberate and compound.

I’m candidly sharing my story because defining moments like these often come with intense pain that can easily cripple our lives and darken our spirit. But they can also be a source of light, guiding us to better days and setting the tone for the rest of our lives.

I advocate channeling this potent emotional fuel to propel our passion to “right” the wrongs we were dealt in our past, using our own scars to galvanize our resolve to protect and serve others.

At the end of the day, we are all in this together, and we always take care of family.

NETWORKING IS MUCH MORE THAN BUILDING BUSINESS

by Chris Borja While networking is known as a great way to grow business, there’s a hidden benefit that most overlook. That’s the ability to create thriving communities!

Networking is different from many growth and sales strategies because it places much more emphasis on creating and maintaining genuine relationships.

Additionally, networking causes one’s circle of influence to continue expanding and growing with each and every conversation and introduction.

Because of this, new pathways can develop through working together as a team and community rather than as an individual.

Here are 3 ways that networking creates thriving communities.

First of all, networking brings people together. Business professionals rely on meeting new people in order to accomplish their organizational goals.

This becomes the catalyst for new opportunities and endless possibilities!

Imagine all of the various places that the business community gathers on a daily basis across our city.

There are networking opportunities happening all over Columbus from morning ‘til night every day of the week!

Think about how many people are gathering at any given time for conferences, referral groups, associations, non-profit organizations, networking groups, chambers of commerce, and clubs!

A quick Google search will reveal more opportunities to connect with new people than you have time for! Networking brings people together!

Second, networking encourages diversity! Just as a football team with only quarterbacks wouldn’t be successful, neither would a community without diversity. We need diversity in order to thrive!

Diversity includes the community members’ background, race, age, religion, political views, skills, talents, passions, insights, connections, resources, finances, and life experiences.

Everyone brings these elements to the table, adding value to the community!

While a common theme in the media is to cause division because of our differences, these differences and the diversity among us is actually our strength!

Third, networking encourages intentional collaboration and the sharing of resources.

In the business world, we seek to give and receive “referrals.” Referrals are typically the best source for new customers and clients. A good business community openly shares referrals back and forth because of the trust and relationship created between its members.

Networking and collaboration helps for-profit businesses, non-profit organizations, and individual members of the community!

When well-connected communities share their resources and work together, they can do so much more than survive…

Instead, they thrive!

Whether it’s through a monetary donation, helping with equipment costs, sending items at no cost, conducting a toy drive, hosting a holiday meal, or simply providing gift cards to those in need, businesses and people across the nation find a way to give back. While it’s something many do throughout the year, the holidays are always a time when people feel more driven to help others.

Nonprofit organizations hold a special place in the hearts of many. Whether you’re drawn to supporting exotic animals, rescue pets, health-related conditions or some other mission, there’s always a nonprofit that needs your support. COhatch, a coworking company with several locations across Columbus, makes this a year-round endeavor with their Give Scholarship for nonprofit organizations.

COhatch was founded in 2016, opening its first location in Worthington, Ohio. Since then, the company has expanded to 16 locations across Ohio, with additional locations in Indiana, Pennsylvania and Florida. Upon opening its doors, COhatch already had a plan to give back by allowing those who purchased a membership to donate toward nonprofit scholarships. In return, COhatch wrote donor names and donations on round wooden coasters and hung them up for all to see. Today, the GIVE Scholarship has moved beyond the COhatch The Hardware Store to support community development at each location.

So, what is the GIVE Scholarship? Initially, the scholarship started out as a boost scholarship that was intended for companies that needed an extra boost and couldn’t afford office space.

From there it spun off into helping nonprofits, the intention being for members to use space provided by COhatch. Scholarships can be used in different ways, depending on the needs of the organization.

All scholarship recipients are given a form of membership that allows them to use COhatch services such as work space, mail service, meeting room access and events.

Board meetings, collaborations with other nonprofits or local businesses, there’s even a retirement party being held at a COhatch location soon. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination and the availability of your local COhatch space!

On top of the scholarship, COhatch hosts a number of events throughout the year that bring nonprofits and the community together. Twice-yearly events are specific to impact programs, but local, smaller events like lunches and happy hour are extended to all members, new and existing, and every member receives an invite.

Not done yet, COhatch hosts Impact Hours where office hours exist for startups and nonprofits to get free business advice and assistance. While the GIVE Scholarship is typically reserved for local nonprofits, COhatch does offer a 20% discount to other nonprofits looking to use their space.

One recipient of the GIVE Scholarship is Damascus, a prison reentry nonprofit. Christine Marallen, Chief Strategy Officer at Damascus, discusses the impact of the scholarship on the nonprofit.

For Damascus and the work that we do, we rely on meeting other business owners to really drive our initiative of finding people employment. We count on meeting other professionals, whether it’s a networking opportunity, or just getting information on what’s happening in the economy and different work spaces, it’s really crucial for our organization,” she said.

“Just to be in the COhatch offices, our staff has the opportunity to meet other business owners, other nonprofits like us that are trying to move the needle in some way, it’s a game changer for us.”

The impact is felt by each nonprofit who receives a scholarship. Office space comes at a premium, especially in an era when more and more people are working from home.

Running a nonprofit out of your home tends to take over the house with items donated, packages to send, gift bags to put together for events, and whatever else is needed.

It’s not ideal for most people who have families and pets, so giving these organizations a place to call “home” is a bigger relief than you might think.

THe GIVE Scholarship is good for one year, and recipients are invited to reapply when their year is up.

Speaking with Jenna Dray, Columbus Market Leader for COhatch, revealed that with the growth of COhatch came the development of their overall Impact Fund. This fund supports nonprofits (GIVE Scholarship), boost scholarships and civic scholarships.

Boost scholarships are for local startups and small businesses, some are tech-focused, others are owned by women and minorities. The Civic scholarship is intended for city leaders, police, fire departments, etc. that may need space for various meetings or events. As of September 2022, COhatch has awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships across five locations, including over $700,000 in Columbus alone.

COhatch was founded with the idea that the company would give back in some way.

What started out small just six years ago has blossomed into something amazing that strengthens our local community and boasts a collaborative and inclusive environment for all.

Alum Creek Lake by Robin Andes Autumn is a magical season. The change in weather breeds a colorful landscape that makes a perfect backdrop for photos. Whether it’s family photos, engagement photos, wedding photos or simply snapping a picture with your phone while out for a walk, some of the most beautiful photography opportunities are in the fall.

In the city, it can sometimes be hard to capture those beautiful landscapes without man-made buildings and roads mucking it all up. But here in Columbus, we’re pretty lucky, our metro parks offer some gorgeous photo opportunities without human intrusion, and there are even hidden gems, not inside parks that offer beautiful backdrops.

We wanted to highlight some of the places that provide amazing fall photos that are in or near Columbus, so we asked our members to submit some of their favorites.

SPOTLIGHT VISTA VILLAGE

My name is Harvey Hook. I am the Chief Engagement Officer of Vista Village.

Vista Village was established in 2019. Our Mission is to create a tiny homes community for men and women experiencing homelessness, provide them with wraparound services, help them find employment and then graduate to independent living in the broader community.

I've been called by God to create opportunities for people and communities to thrive, and Vista Village allows me to empower others in the fulfillment of my calling.

We are in the development stage of Vista Village. On the development side we are building 41, 420 sq. ft., tiny homes, each with bedroom, bath, kitchen, living area, front porch and pitched roof. Each home will house a single homeless individual. The city of Columbus strongly supports this project, including support

by Major Ginther, City Council President, Shannon Hardin, members of Council, and their Development Department. We are planning to break ground on the project in early Spring 2023. Our site is located in southeast Columbus off Refugee Road, approximately 1 mile east of Eastland Mall.

On the fundraising side, we have secured commitments of $3.6 million in the past 14 months towards our $6 million capital campaign goal. There will be numerous opportunities for volunteer engagement as we approach our opening date and once our residents are in the village.

We look forward to final site approval from the City of Columbus by the end of October 2022 and then groundbreaking with community leaders and interested members of the public in early Spring 2023.

"Our 4,000 sq. ft. community center will serve as the hub for delivering all healthcare, education, counseling, workforce development, financial literacy, and training. We will begin construction in early winter 2022 and plan to open it for public viewing in early 2023, along with two of our tiny homes."

Community members can contact us to inquire about opportunities for volunteer engagement individually, as a business or group, or as a church or faith community.

While we focus on capital fund raising at the moment we are welcoming individuals, businesses, and churches to consider making a financial commitment to underwrite the operational costs of the village. We are seeking to raise $10,000 per home, for each of our 41 homes, to cover operational expenses annually.

THE CANCER OPTION COLLABORATIVE, a.k.a "THE COC"

My name is Mary Jenkins, and I am the Founder/CEO of Cancer Option Collaborative, previously known as Christians Overcoming Cancer. We were founded in 2006 to help active treatment cancer patients succeed on their road to recovery through awareness, emotional support, and financial relief services. We specialize in bringing together resources to help them prevent eviction, utility disconnect, car repos, and more!

My desire is to impact the world of cancer to help those in the toughest battle of their life.

One of our success stories is the time we were able to arrange emergency transportation services from Columbus, OH to Toledo, OH for the mother of a little girl who was in treatment. The girl and her mother were life-flighted to Children's Hospital here due to some complications. After being stabilized and discharged, the mother was left to arrange a ride home to Toledo. Having little funds and not seeing a way to get home, the family was referred to The COC. Not only did we arrange transportation for both mom and daughter, but we were able to cover the cost as well.

Another success of The COC was when we stopped the eviction of a man who was battling stage IV cancer. We brought his bill current, and paid an additional month's rent!

We are excited about our “5 ALIVE Challenge” where we are seeking 10,000 people who will do 3 things. First, commit to making a monthly donation. Second, challenge 2 others to do the same. Third, impact the lives of those in treatment by sharing that they accepted the challenge, on social media.

In December, we will have the "Cancer Can't Stop Christmas" program where we provide wishlist presents to children 17 and under whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Coming in July 2023, is our “Raising the Bar Barber and Beauty Expo,” where industry professionals come together for education, product purchases, and competitions.

My name is Jurgita Fumo. I am the Founder/Executive Director of Celebrating One. We were established in 2016 to encourage and empower families and individuals who are less fortunate and economically disadvantaged, who need guidance and financial aid to keep moving forward to good emotional, mental and financial health. We provide the tools to help them thrive and feel connected no matter their circumstances.

I strongly believe that a burden shared is a burden halved. Everyone at some point in their lives needs a shoulder to cry on or hand to lift them up without any judgment. Everyone deserves empathy and understanding, and that is what we are set to do.

Here’s a success story from our “No Grad Left Behind” program. One of our graduates struggled with time management and homework. With our mentor's help, we provided tools and skills on how to get organized, and how to prioritize to-do lists in order to feel less overwhelmed.

The student has been using those skills & tools since then, which helped the student to continue on, and get accepted to college. The student said, "I would not be in my third year in college if not for your mentorship that I received being in your program.”

We are now looking forward to our holiday drive to support families in need and make their holidays memorable. We are excited to start planning our 5K and anniversary gala for next year!

We are always looking for volunteers for long-term or short-term projects. At this moment, we are looking for volunteers that have project management skills, writers/editors & event planning experience.

We are looking to connect with high school teachers, principals, and social workers to help us spread a word about our “No Grad Left Behind” program that benefits high school students that struggle financially.

The authentic leadership team of African United Foundation, Inc, understands the challenges and real world issues facing children in the Southwest Region of Africa. Each member of the Executive Team grew up in Cameroon, Africa and now resides in the United States. William Nkemson, Christopher Akeibom Toh & Henrietta Bettah each have a deep compassion for the situation and circumstances facing children and young adults, yet more importantly, they want to do something about it The education system in Africa is dismal for children who have lost one or both parents and have no choice but to attend the public schools. The focus of African United Foundation is to provide safe spaces, compassionate instructors, and partnerships with Private Schools to ensure children are treated with dignity, respect, and care, so they can learn and develop.

SPOTLIGHT C.G. WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT

I am Dureti (Mimi ) Tadesse. I am the President of C.G.Women’s Empowerment (CGWE), which was established in 2012. The mission of C.G. Women’s Empowerment is to create economic self-sufficiency for women, children, and entire villages in Ethiopia’s Oromia region.

In the United States, I witnessed the achievement of women and the opportunities that are open to women. This has only fueled my passion and dedication to make a difference in the lives of women in Oromia, Ethiopia– my place of birth.

Ten years ago, Alemi Wagari was ready to commit suicide from despair and hopelessness. She was a single mother who literally owned nothing, not even a chicken.

She became a CGWE beneficiary and shared that, “The mere fact of being given a heifer changed my status in my community.” Her first cow gave birth to a young female calf and provided assets and food for her family.

Alemi began to sell milk and milk products for a modest income that allowed her to send her five children to a nearby school. As the first-born female calf matured, Alemi honored her promise of passing the young heifer to another woman who was on the waiting list through the Dabaree Process.

The second-born calf was a bull which Alemi fattened and eventually sold for a considerable amount of money. She invested the money to improve her home from a dilapidated hut to one with corrugated metal sheets that protect against leaking.

Alemi is now a hopeful and proud businesswoman who has used the training provided by CGWE to learn how to run her business and save money. She enjoys a more respected status in her community.

Alemi became a donor by giving her firstborn female calf (Dabaree) and now is the owner of 3 cows!

Dasse Fixe is a widow and mother of three children, raising her children by herself without any outside support. Dasse obtained a cow through the Dabaree process. It matured and gave birth to a male calf. The milk and dairy products improved her family’s nutrition.

Dasse fattened the steer (male calf) and was able to sell it. She used the money to buy materials to improve her home, and thus her social standing.

She is now preparing to transfer her female calf to another woman on the waiting list. Dasse is a proud mother, who supports and sends her five children to a nearby school. Dasse says her children used donated solar lights to complete homework and improve their grades.

CGWE’s 2022 goals are to buy 60 cows ($650 a cow), drill 3-4 water wells cooperating with Columbus Rotary Clubs, advance artificial breeding efforts, create reading corners in the village library, provide training and hygiene supplies, and create sustainability through capacity building.

SPOTLIGHT HELP I NEED TRANSPORTATION

I am Stephanie Burkhardt, the Director of Development for Help I Need Transportation.

We started the organization in order to help working people who are stuck with expensive car repair or replacement. Our assistance plan provides them with a replaced or repaired vehicle, restoring their ability to work, and meet family obligations.

What drives the passion for HINT is the fact that sometimes a person cannot control the hand they are dealt in life. If we can help those who are struggling get back on their feet with the gift of transportation, then we are making a difference in the quality of not only their life but their family and friends as well.

We have been able to help several people since May of 2022, but one of our favorite success stories is from the very first person we were able to help, James Black. He is a 50 year old veteran who HINT was able to provide with a gently used GMC Yukon. This vehicle not only was able to help him get to and from his medical appointments, but it also provided him a place to sleep.

Another success story is about a woman who desperately needed help with repair costs. She was the main provider of transportation for her grandchildren to get to and from school and other appointments. When we evaluated her vehicle we deemed it unsafe to drive and unable to be fixed. We didn’t stop there though. We were able to provide her with a reliable 4 door vehicle that would safely provide transportation for her entire family.

We recently hosted a great fundraising event, bringing together a dozen of the city's top networking organizations, where the majority of the proceeds went to HINT. We are looking forward to hosting more fundraising events in the future!

The best way to support our nonprofit would be through monetary donations at our website, donating an old car, or spreading the word about HINT to hopefully help us to partner with other businesses and nonprofits.

Of course, marketing can help business owners and practitioners achieve quite a number of other goals, including building goodwill, staying in touch with existing customers and clients, defining terminology, announcing changes in products and services, controlling damage from negative PR or complaints, and recruiting employees. All of these goals lead to increased trust in the business, which means customers return and new customers show up.

When it comes right down to it, core beliefs, not core products or services, are what "sell" your product. Barbra Streisand touched on this idea when she sang, “People who need people are the luckiest people in the world.” Online readers need people. Your customers and prospects need to trust the person you are within your community. Marketing helps you achieve this goal.
