FUN WINTER EVENTS

Normally, January and February are the months where there are not a whole lot of outdoor events and festivals taking place, due to the unpredictable Ohio Winter Weather, but there are still things taking place, as we phase out of the holiday season While some Holiday Lights shows end on January 1, there are a couple of Holiday Shows that will still be up through January 8, Holiday Blooms and Conservatory Aglow at the Franklin Park Conservatory and the Huntington Holiday Train at the Main Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library.

If you love Ohio State Football, the “A Walk in the Shoe” Exhibit celebrating 100 years of Ohio Stadium will be up at the William Oxley Thompson Library at The Ohio State University-Main Campus through February, featuring rare artifacts (like a piece of a goal post from the 1955 Rose Bowl, an IlliBuck Trophy from the 1980s, and a LEGO replica of Ohio Stadium) from Ohio State football over the last 100 years. The exhibit hours for “A Walk in the Shoe” can be found here.

January will also see Columbus roll out the welcome mat for the PCMA Convening Leaders Conference (a conference for event meeting planners) when it comes to Downtown Columbus The PCMA Convening Leaders Conference is the second-largest conference in the country, and is the first of two major conferences in Columbus in 2023, with the Convention of Mayors taking place this Summer

Columbus has a lot to explore year-round, and there is always something going on in the city or its surrounding suburbs And with Columbus welcoming in large-scale events like the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 2018 (and again in 2027!), and the American Society of Associates and Executives (ASAE) in 2019, Columbus is setting itself to be on stage for the world to see, with trendy destinations, culture, and cuisine. Here are some of the events around the community that are taking place In early 2023.

3. Learn something new. Regardless of how you decide to help within your community, you’ll likely learn something you didn’t already know. Volunteer to help develop something new to help your community, your networking group, or someone's business get to the next level

4. Strengthen your confidence. Because you ’ re serving others, you’ll feel more positive about yourself I don't know about you, but once I dive into the deep end on a particular subject, I come up knowing so much more about the topic and can share with much more confidence

5. Gain work experience. Depending on the type of people you meet, and the community work you do, you could learn something that will help you in your current gig or future work I always go into a new volunteer position with the attitude that I'm going to get better within my skill set

Serving your community develops a network of resources you can access when you need them I can't tell you the number of times my networking friends came to my rescue with the exact information I needed

13. Add to your resume. Networking and serving in your community give you marketable experiences and qualifications to include in your resume. Even for those entrepreneurial types, you can design your next podcast or speaking gig around your experience and expertise

14 Networking and serving in your community is a real-life experience that can’t be had in the classroom. Some college instructors recommend “service learning” which is another term for “volunteering” or “giving back to your community.” Service learning provides a real-world experience to students that would be impossible to learn in the classroom

15. View how others live. Seeing how others live their lives enhances your own life.

Networking and serving in your community are important for several reasons By serving, you view a world outside of yourself, learn new things, develop positive feelings, gain job experience, and make new networking contacts Plus, helping in your community is a kind and wonderful thing to do

You might become well-known, make new friends, strengthen your community, and even add a line to your resume when you network and serve

When you network and serve, you’ll experience things in the real world that you can’t in the classroom, and you’ll see how others live. For these reasons and more, make it a point to network and give back to your community. You’ll be inspired!

PLANNING FOR SUCCESS IN 2023

For entrepreneurs just getting started or business owners closing out books for another year, January is generally a great time to establish goals and monthly benchmarks for the new year Developing a vision map, road map, or strategy map will allow you to see things more clearly and define operational elements that will help you accomplish your goals and achieve greater success in areas of finance, customer satisfaction, strengthening your brand, addressing procedures within your company, determining best practices for training, and developing your leadership team.

Some of your initial plans are likely to change slightly as different situations arise, so having a road map will better prepare you for the need to pivot or shift You’ve already considered possible challenges you might face based on the past or while preparing for the future, easing the pain of that pivot or shift.

SCORE and SBA provide valuable resources locally for new and existing businesses, including a 12-step Startup Roadmap which may be beneficial for anyone just starting their business There are members in CONNECTED Columbus and other networking groups who are valuable resources in helping businesses navigate the planning and execution phases. Reach out, buy them a cup of coffee, and ask for advice.

There isn't a guaranteed formula for success that works for every business plan. In doing your research, perhaps you'll find a business guru with a book or a 7-step process that speaks specifically to the vision you have for your business The most important thing is that you find or develop a system or strategy that will assist you in planning for success

There is truth in what Winston Churchill said: “He who fails to plan, is planning to fail,” which is based on a Benjamin Franklin quote: “By failing to plan, you are preparing to fail.” These leaders experienced success during their lifetimes, which likely started with preparation

As business owners, we all want to be successful Success isn't necessarily equated to dollars and cents, though. Every person and every business has its definition of success. Perhaps you're a non-profit that wants to increase the families you serve from 100 to 250, or you ’ re an individual wanting to build your social network capital by 30 people, or maybe you ’ re a business owner who wants to increase your retainer clients by 12 and add a manager in 2023? It all requires calculated planning

Much of the planning process is establishing a true, honest evaluation of where you are currently. Ask yourself questions that will help frame the action steps needed each month to assist you with accomplishing monthly, quarterly, and annual goals. Evaluate your human capital, informational capital, and organizational capital Set relevant objectives and key performance indicators to ensure you're on the right track

For some, these basic questions may come from your Mission, Value, and Vision statements. If you don't have these in place, it's a good starting point to help define your business Why do you do what you do? What's most important to you in business and in serving others? How do you want your business message to be received by the masses? Where do you hope to take the company in the next 12 months and the next 12 years? Which consumer markets should you specifically target for profitable growth?

Sometimes, part of this process will involve a S.W.O.T. analysis to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats that exist from your competition. How are they perceived in the community, and what do you need to do to be a top three choice of consumers who want your products and services?

With answers to these questions, you should be able to identify a starting point for a (new) plan to help you build a strong business brand, satisfy more customers, benefit stakeholders, build a stronger and more prepared workforce, and see an increase in business growth, while hopefully maintaining a proper balance between work, life and play

Don't overwhelm yourself with tasks but be accountable to the goals you've identified and the benchmarks you've set throughout the year. Stay focused on the long-term vision for your business. If something doesn't go as planned in the first few weeks or months, DON'T GIVE UP! Don't get discouraged Things rarely go as planned in business Stay the course, make adjustments as needed, and seek counsel from experts in the areas you're struggling with Pivot and adjust as needed throughout the year, and take notes along the way as you prepare for an even better year next January.

Remember, look at SCORE and SBA, and tap into the resources you have available through your CONNECTED family

FIVE HACKS TO SPICE UP YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HEALTHY FOOD

How is your love life? And by love life, I mean your relationship with what you put in your mouth. That’s right, get your mind out of the gutter, and let’s talk about one of life’s necessities: FOOD

Eating is a life necessity, but our food choices can either work FOR us or AGAINST us With the New Year upon us, what better time to begin a healthy relationship with food?

Whether it’s getting back that sexy body, becoming regular again, modeling healthy habits that your kids will thank you for later, or decreasing the risk of cancer, heart attack, and stroke, we all could use some support when it comes to our food choices

Most people know that eating fruits and veggies is good for you, but they would also agree that eating enough fruits and veggies daily, in the quantity and variety that our bodies need, is challenging So here are a few simple solutions to “spice up ” your relationship with food while overcoming the common challenges of eating healthy

1. Keep it HOTT

Being intentional about dating after marriage is vital to keep the flame ”Hott.” Playing, changing up your routine, keeping it fresh, and spicing it up; are all common cliches that not only apply to a healthy relationship, but also to a healthy diet

Two common challenges around eating healthy are how bland the food tastes and how boring it can be Simple ways to give your veggies and clean protein a sexy new flavor twist include adding a bit of garlic, honey, ginger, cayenne, cumin, or rosemary. A little bit goes a long way, so try out a few combinations and explore to discover what delights your palate most

Simple additions to give your veggies or protein a fresh new look and a splash of color include orange bell peppers, spinach, butternut squash, zucchini, carrots, red onions, or beets Heart-healthy spices like turmeric and cinnamon can add natural color and flavorful variety to your meal.

2. Find someone to do it with

Doing it solo decreases the success rate Similar to the 80% of people who commit to going to the gym in January and quit by February, finding someone to do it with increases your odds of following through with your goal Yes, I just made up that statistic, but you get the idea. Doing it with someone else makes it fun and helps with accountability

One of the tools that I use to empower communities to eat healthier is having healthy potlucks for a group of friends and family “Healthy Living Parties” is what I call them, and I’m always happy to support anyone in organizing these At these parties, we are intentional about sharing tips, tricks, and recipes for anyone who wants to adopt a particular dish into their own regimen of healthy home cooking

You’ve heard the phrase, “Together is better.” Jumping onto the bandwagon of healthy living is no exception.

3. Talk to your food

My girlfriend and I say, “I love you ” every time we depart or arrive Whether we feel like it or not, we say it to remind others that they matter to us

There is power in prayer Whether you are religious or not, pausing gives a deeper purpose to your actions. The same applies to your food. Eating is no longer a mindless routine; instead, becoming a meaningful act of something greater than self For me, praying over my food first grounds me in gratitude and allows me to appreciate what it will do for me on a deeper level than I would otherwise Giving thanks to the Giver (God) for the gift (food) humbles me and reminds me that food and my health are not to be taken for granted.

Even without prayer, taking a moment before you eat to pause and reflect on the meal in front of you will ground you and fill you with gratitude. This solidifies the desire to continue to eat healthily and make strides toward a better relationship with food

4. Habit Stacking

“People who have a full set of teeth when they are 74 years old are significantly more likely to reach the age of 100,” according to the Oral Health Foundation and published in the Journal of Periodontology (Eke et al., 2016). While our parents may not have known that statistic, they were likely relentless about teaching us to adopt brushing into our bedtime routine Even when we fought with them, they didn’t give up. They found creative ways to integrate it into our routines, stacking it with other habits until it became rote.

The phytonutrients in fruits and veggies boost brain function, improve depression and anxiety, suppress cancer genes, correct fertility, and much more We can use the habit-stacking method to add veggies to our daily meals.

Building a healthy snack of carrots or celery into a work break or grabbing an apple on the way out to the car are easy ways to incorporate and develop a new habit into an existing routine

5. Cheat on your tastebuds to have an affair with your gut

While it’s not wise to cheat on your spouse or partner, it can be beneficial to cheat on your sense of taste As predicted in the 1960’s series The Jetsons, today’s innovative food technology has realized a vehicle to bypass the less desirable flavors of raw plant matter, while still delivering the necessary nutrients straight to the intestines where they are easily absorbed into the blood

One of the common vehicles that I utilize daily is Juice Plus, which is encapsulated fruit and veggie powders packaged into small capsules This provides the benefit of eating a wide variety and large quantities of raw plants without tasting the concoction of broccoli, spinach, elderberry, pomegranate, beet powders, and other healthy superfoods

Playing around with these five approaches toward healthy foods can transform the act of eating into an exciting and enjoyable experience, rather than a bland, boring relationship. As you reflect on 2022 and look forward into the new year, make certain you set yourself up for success with your relationship goals with food

Remember to spice things up and keep it HOTT, find someone to do it with, ground yourself in gratitude, incorporatenewhabitsintoexistingones, andcheatonyourtastebudstobridgethegap betweenwhatyoushouldbeeatingandwhatyoueat.

FIFTEEN EASY CAR-CARE HABITS

Avoid a Break Down on the Road and Keep Your Car Running Forever!

As we embark on yet another winter driving season, it’s a good time to get a fresh reminder of fifteen simple car-care habits that will keep you safe on the road, and, believe it or not, practically keep your car running FOREVER! Check them out!

Habit 1: Follow Your Car’s Service Schedule.

Virtually every car manual has spelled out in clear terms a schedule of maintenance that should be followed as recommended by the manufacturer There is really no excuse not to follow it

Habit 2: Maintain Engine Fluids And Tire Pressure.

The engine fluids, especially the oil, are literally the lifeblood of your vehicle Healthy fluids make for a healthy car, and proper tire pressure is one of the most important factors for safety and reliability

Habit 3: Don’t Ignore Warning Signs.

When your car is having trouble, it often will tell you Are you listening? When something doesn’t sound right or another sign appears (an engine light?), check it out In most cases, the sooner you address the issue, the better

Habit 4: Drive With Care And Go Easy On Your Car.

Most cars are not built to be racers or road monsters and treating them as such is not only unsafe but dumb Everything, just like our bodies, is subject to wear and tear. Minimize that, and your car will thank you.

Habit 5: Wash & Wax Regularly.

Washing a car is more than about appearance it preserves the health of the body and the framework Waxing is crucial to protect from water and prevent rust Washing the underside of your vehicle is equally important to ensure that the mechanics remain relatively clean and operate smoothly

Habit 6: Allow 30-Seconds To Warm Up.

When your car has been sitting for more than a few hours, the engine oil is resting on the bottom Too many of us start our vehicles and immediately take off without allowing time for proper oil circulation, increasing wear and tear on the engine. Unless a herd of zombies is on your tail, allowing at least 30 seconds of warm-up time (a minute if the car has sat more than 24 hours) will pay off!

Habit 7: Maintain Your Cooling System.

Without the cooling system, your engine is dead within minutes of ignition. We are not just talking about fluids, but pumps and hoses as well and they need regular inspection, maintenance, and replacement. A failed cooling system is also among the most common causes of highway breakdowns in areas with limited phone coverage Don’t let that be you

Habit 8: Change Brake Fluid Every Two Years.

Most people only think of their brakes when the grinding begins It is smart to change the brake fluid in the same way that changing the oil will help add years of service to your vehicle.

Habit 9: Test Your Used Engine Oil!

None of us can predict the future, but the used oil that flows out of your engine every 3,000 miles can be a soothsayer! Your oil is to your car what your blood is to your body and every full physical typically includes blood tests to check for possible ailments. For about the same cost of an oil change, you can have your oil tested to see what might be plaguing your automobile, and address it before any real damage is done

Habit 10: Research Your Vehicle Model.

Every car model has its issues and idiosyncrasies yours is no different You can benefit from the experiences of others who have driven the same make and model of your vehicle and anticipate what issues tend to arise and plan accordingly

Habit 11: Prevent and Attack Rust.

Water and oxidation are among your vehicle’s chief enemies You’ve no doubt seen vehicles plagued by rust which can threaten your car ’ s body and framework. Rust-proofing your vehicle, if it’s not too late, is one of the best investments you can make to keep your car on the road

Habit 12: Use High-End Gas Once Per Quarter.

Using premium gas in your car once per quarter can add to the overall life of your car, since premium gas cleans the engine and its components, helping to ensure that it performs at its best

Habit 13: Use Your Parking Brake.

Perhaps the most misunderstood feature of your vehicle, the parking brake should be engaged whenever the vehicle is stopped (not just on a hill) This is because it holds your car ’ s transmission in place when the vehicle is parked This helps the engine NOT using it over time increases wear on the transmission (not cheap!) and the engine. Another simple habit that can make a big difference

Habit 14: Park Your Car In a Garage Or Shelter.

Another no-brainer. If you don’t have a garage, is a carport a possible option? Let’s face it the elements are tough on your vehicle, and keeping it sheltered when not in use, especially during extreme weather seasons, will make a big difference in the long-term health and viability

Habit 15: Don’t Load Your Car Down.

Unless your vehicle is built and engineered for hauling heavy gear or equipment, loading down your vehicle (or using it as makeshift storage) is not advisable. Excess weight will wear your tires out faster and can put needless strain on the framework and suspension

There you have it Yes, some of these might sound like common sense We know it, and so do you But are you doing them?

Enough said Stay safe on the road this winter!

Canal Winchester

Located just southeast of Columbus, the Canal Winchester Chamber of Commerce is the intersection of where businesses, residents and local leaders meet. Through partnerships with local businesses and government and leaders, the Chamber advocates for and promotes a prosperous business community.

The Canal Winchester Chamber is open and welcoming to all, and believes that where strong businesses succeed and grow, so does the community The Chamber is comprised of businesses, individuals and organizations (large and small) dedicated to the promotion of business and the community

What makes the Canal Winchester Chamber unique is its small-town feel and sense of purpose and inclusion, where chatting with members feels more like catching up with friends rather than colleagues The chamber takes pride in developing close community ties with residents, city officials, and our school district

The Canal chamber hosts three signature events per year, where all are welcome! The Denim and Diamonds Annual Awards Dinner in February, Connections on the Course Golf Outing in May, and the Annual Running Scared 5K and Community Health Fair in October!

They welcome new members and would love to hear about you and your business, and how they can help serve you in the community
