From The Editor’s Desk Caribbean. This institution continues to make strides of distinction and excellence incomparable anywhere else in the island of Jamaica. In this year’s publication of the BEACON, amazement and awe mark every article and elucidate every page. It is a documentation of our splendour as a school with such an exceptional and stupendous tradition and history.

As the editor of this year’s magazine it is with great humility, euphoria and buoyancy that I convey good wishes as editor of such a prestigious publication.

This opportunity is truly a privilege as this magazine is much more than just pictures and articles; it is the memories of years past, filled with conquests and defeat.

How a moment in time has departed so swiftly.

It seems as though only yesterday attending this dignified institution was but a dream. As the years have gone by friendships have been created, bonds have been broken and lessons learnt. As I look back on the years I have spent here, I can truly say it has been an experience that has taught me lasting lessons.

For a number of years, the beacon has produced well documented information showcasing the talents and achievements of the Bethlehem Moravian College family. This year is no different yet it is.

As we are celebrating one hundred and fifty years as an institution of excellence. “Mihi Cura Futuri”.

“My Care is for the Future” are the grovelling words of our college motto, which stands as a factual representation of the high principles and standards that Jamaica and the wider society, have come to know and expect from us.

I am able to say this year’s edition is not only as a result of great team work and determination but is also filled with the heart of the committee members.

However the finished product, one of prestige and high eminence is a direct symbol of the hard work, diligence, astonishing creativeness, and the elation of teamwork, pain, laughter and love that is representational of Bethlehmites at home and abroad.

I would like to thank God for giving us the strength to complete this publication. Thanks to one and all who contributed to this special edition.

Greetings From The Governor General The Bethlehem Moravian College has a distinguished record as an institution of academic excellence.

Over the years, the college has supplied the nation with highly trained and competent teachers, and has shown an appreciation of the fact that education will remain relevant to the needs of our changing society.

The vision and wisdom of the Moravian Church in establishing this institution 150 years ago has truly redounded to the benefit of our country.

The graduates of this college have helped many persons to improve themselves intellectually and economically, and to positively impact the communities in which they serve. This is truly a manifestation of your motto “My care is for the future”.

As you celebrate this important anniversary, I offer congratulations and best wishes for sustained success, as you continue to offer the kind of education that Jamaica needs to reach its full potential.

Minister of Education As education minister, and as Jamaican who is concerned about the future of our children, it is my hope that in the years to come Jamaicans can attain full literacy.

The scourge of illiteracy which is stifling their ability to make use of the many opportunities that are available to them, has too strong a grip on some of our children.

Our children are not dunces; they are bright, creative and full of dreams and visions. But some of them have been living in situations that have prevented them from attaining literacy and numeracy.

But, whatever, the situations in which they are existing are, they have the ability to read and write, and, as such, some amount of intervention must be done to get them where they should be.

Thus, Bethlehem Moravian College, as one of our premier teacher-training institutions, is charged with the difficult task of producing educators who are equipped with the requisite skills to help in the fight to eradicate illiteracy in Jamaica. One hundred and fifty years of producing teachers of immerse talent must not go to waste. The talent must be translated to the classrooms where our students go expecting to be taught to read and write.

I implore you, past, present and future students to embrace the notion that your job cannot be done if you have not helped in the alleviation of this decades-old problem of illiteracy. Use the stories of the great dedication of the founder fathers to be your guide, to enforce your own commitment to your charges. They spent hours at night and day, when technology was far less advanced than today’s, to make sure objectives were met.

To the present cohort, focus on your goals, absorb as much as you can, prepare yourself in every possible way for the fight against illiteracy. You might not be majoring in literacy skills, but this does not mean you cannot play your part in helping students who come before you in the future with reading and writing problems. The eradication of illiteracy is not the responsibility of only reading and literacy specialists.

To the graduating class of 2011, you are now members of the Bethlehem Moravian College alumni, straddling a tradition of excellence and a history of achievements you are, but your work has just begun, you work to educate the nation’s children, and when you will have come to the end of your teaching journey, you shall have said you have done well in your fight against illiteracy.

The Ministry of Education itself has been, and will continue to, embarking upon many policies in our nationwide drive to minimize the cases of illiteracy. The ministry is wholly committed to these policies, but it can only achieve its objectives if all the stakeholders in the illiteracy eradication movement are themselves serious about resolving this problem. Let us all work together for the safe of our children.

I congratulate the entire Bethlehem Moravian College community on reaching this remarkable juncture of 150 years of existence, and I expect greater things from you in the years to come.

Chairman’s Message By any standard, 150 years of the existence of any educational institution is a great achievement, and a significant milestone. Yet, some have enjoyed a long sojourn, and that’s all there is to it, age. Bethlehem Moravian College is not among those.

We are a community of achievers and trailblazers who have made indelible marks on the local, national and international educational landscapes.

The road to the 150-year milepost was never an easy one, because operating an institution of excellence, such as Bethlehem Moravian College is, could not be without hiccups. The college, beginning with three female students in 1861, at Bethabra, Newport, Manchester, has been through very serious challenges, moving from one location to the other, facing the ravages of natural disasters such as hurricanes and droughts, threats of closure by government, overworked masters and mistresses, disillusioned and overly stressed students.

The dedication of former principal, the Reverend J.J. Seiler, is to be noted, and though it ended tragically, is the singular most important act of commitment in the college’s history, and should be a constant reminder of dedication to those who are sometimes discouraged by impending storms, and I quote from the annals of Bethlehem Moravian College.

“It was Mr. Seiler who planted the poinciana trees which now line the main drive and provide in May and June such a beautiful red canopy of blossoms. One Tuesday, in October 1875, he was busy putting in the seedlings. The afternoon was hot and sticky, and sudden heavy showers of rain descended. Anxious to complete his job and feeling that the young trees would benefit he continued with his work.

“The seedlings were all planted, but Seiler caught a severe chill, which rapidly developed into pneumonia, and by Sunday the minister was seriously ill, so ill that the congregation assembled in the church was asked to sing in a lower voice his favourite hymn. Seiler, in his house a few yards away, could hear and was comforted. Far into

Sunday night the church members woke and heard the toiling of the bell. They knew their minister had passed away.”

Despite the illnesses, deaths, pitfalls, hurdles and stumbling blocks, with each passing day in this noble institution’s 150-year history, the stakeholders bore in mind the objectives of the founding Moravian fathers and the expectations of the Moravian Church, whose visions are still relevant after one and a half centuries. And with the zest and zeal of those who were committed to our survival, we are now regarded as a multi-disciplinary institution of choice.

To the nooks and crannies of this fair isle our light radiates, and those who have basked in our glow are proud, and we certainly are proud of them. We have produced many educators of great repute and we are happy that Bethlehem Moravian College is the place where they were nurtured, guided and trained. Yet, we are not merely satisfied with our accomplishments so far, we intend to build on them.

We are fully aware of our present shortcomings and challenges, but with God on our side, as always, we will surmount them. On the June 3, 1861, the Reverend J. J. Seiler, in a simple ceremony asked God’s blessing on the institution, and in the afternoon, the Reverend Agustus Clemens of the governing board, in addressing the first three female students, asked again for God’s blessing. I too, as chairman of the Board of Management, am asking for God’s blessing as we look towards another 150 years.

We, therefore, are calling upon all well-wishers and past Bethlehemites to join us in whatever way they can in our efforts to develop our programmes, offerings, facilities, students and staff as we seek to attain university status, and as we continue to satisfy the needs of those who are desirous of joining our community.

So, on behalf of the entire board of Bethlehem Moravian College, I take this opportunity to encourage the ancillary, grounds and administrative staff, part-time and full-time lecturers and tutors, the principal and vice-principals and students to continue to exhibit the due diligence and steadfastness for which Bethlehem Moravian College is known, as they toil in the glare of this beacon on the hill.

The publication of this yearbook is another opportunity to record the achievements of this noble institution.

Heartiest Congratulations to the Class of 2011! You have done it! You have completed your course of study and as you graduate you must be experiencing a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that your goal has been achieved. Achieving this milestone is a significant accomplishment and your work as a student will pay great dividends in the future. As a graduate of Bethlehem Moravian College (BMC) you and your family should take pride in your achievement.

We are honoured that you chose to be a part of the BMC family and sincerely hope that we have been able to facilitate you in achieving at least some of your dreams and aspirations. However, the world is at the point when in addition to qualification, training and certification, there is an urgent need for good men and women who display the morals and virtues that are so desperately needed in the society: -men and women who respectful, respectable, honest, and trustworthy.

I challenge you to infuse your academic training with these morals and virtues and commit yourselves to make a positive difference in your sphere of endeavour - whatever and wherever that may be.

The Bethlehem Moravian College 150th Anniversary began with Opening Service on January 30, 2011 on the College Grounds, brought us to a critical juncture in our history- It was truly a time for celebration of one and a half century of success, and the bright promise that awaits us as we continue to work together, but, more than ever, a time for reflection and introspection. We shared the Bethlehem story with an important audience which included one of the longest serving principal to date, the late Rev. Basil LaTroube Mac Leavy, to whom this year’s magazine is dedicated. We can proudly say the stewardship of all who have served in various capacities have been years of outstanding achievements-“Bethlehemites : Recognizing the Past, Celebrating the Present , Reclaiming the Vision. Our Theme for the 2010-2011 College Year is instructive. Bethlehemites: Recognizing the Past, Celebrating the Present, Reclaiming the Vision, Ebenezer! Indeed, we are truly thankful for the awesome task that God has accomplished for Bethlehem Moravian College. This is a historic occasion and the achievement of a significant milestone. However, in this new era, it is critical that we revisit the important lessons of the past and examine our present reality in the context of future goals and aspirations.

This is the time for renewal and realignment. This is the time for a new sense of urgency and focused determination as we grapple with the downturn in the world’s economy, social challenges in the education system, unsatisfactory results in the literacy and numeracy achievement of our Primary and Secondary school leavers, and to add to the conundrum, decreased funding for Tertiary Education.

Visionary educational leadership therefore, has to be proactive and vibrant, and must recognize the greater need for increased collaboration regionally and internationally. A chain is as strong as its weakest link, so each unit must address its own fundamental weaknesses, harness and expand human, infrastructural and technological resources and position itself to remain relevant among its partners and competitors.

Tertiary Education is paramount in the rebuilding of a new and transformed Jamaica; “the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business.”

Bethlehem Moravian College, in recognition of this need, will embark on its own diversification to effectively aid the transformation process for this new Jamaica. We will renew, redefine, readjust, realign, retool and expand as a requirement.

We will respond to environmental challenges through focused research and timely publications.

We wish to thank all our partners and stakeholders for joining with us in this our 150th Year of Celebrations. We crave your continued support and partnership as we chart the un-entered territories to a brand new day. To our distinguished Graduates I say – “Congratulations for having completed another leg of your academic journey. In service, always let this mind be in you, which was always in Christ Jesus.” To our current students – I implore you to remain focused to your mission, embrace change and be mindful of your motto-Mihi Cura Futuri: My Care is for the Future.

Vice Principal’s Message The Sesquicentennial Anniversary of any institution is an important milestone worth celebrating. The theme for the Academic Year 2010/2011 “Bethlehemites: Recognizing the Past; Celebrating the Present; Reclaiming the Vision.

EBENEZER! speaks volumes as to God’s leading in Bethlehem Moravian College’s founding, growth and development.

This institution has made major contributions to the global educational landscape for the past 150 years.

The nation, region and the world have benefitted tremendously from the training of individuals who have made and continue to make worthwhile contributions to progress wherever they exist.

We take pride in the fact that we maintained a visible and dynamic institution providing quality education through viable programmes and upholding the moral and spiritual ethos of the institution. There is no reason to apologize for providing a ‘sound’ education so our graduates will learn and adapt efficiently to myriad of situations within their work environments.

The Graduating Class of 2011 must be commended for having stuck to the course, cleared the hurdles and crossed the finish line.

There were many stresses and pressures during your sojourn at College but you somehow were able to perform creditably.

You might look back and say ‘I didn’t know I’d make it this far.’

Give God the glory, honour and praise for He provided the hope amidst your discouragement. As you launch out into ‘the deep’ you must recognize the contributions of everyone who toiled to make this moment a reality. The responsibility is yours to be grateful and live out the principles learnt while in college. This will guarantee success in life’s undertakings.

As you bid farewell to the institution that defined your life for the past 2/3/4 years you are probably asking ‘is it really over?’ Martha Beck cites that every ending brings with it a brand new beginning.

Any kind of ending can leave us feeling ‘deserted’ as if our lives have gone barren and dry. As you launch out, imagine the future, there is a whole lot missing and the things that are missing matter.

Flow into the knowledge that what you are seeking, finishes often at the start, and with ending, begins.

Positioning yourselves on the national, regional and / or international landscapes should remind you of the need to give back to the college. Your worthwhile contributions will make this noble institution a better place for others. Remember your college!

Do not hesitate to give back thereby maintaining a strong link. We will not ask you to stay, but as you leave, bear in mind your duty to the institution that molded your character for these past years.

The institution as it exists now will undergo many changes in a short span of time. As the need arises, there will be changes in tandem with educational transformation. Such positive moves will ensure the institution maintains its relevance to national development and societal change.

Go forth and make good the educational opportunities that exist. The sky is the limit as you continue to learn daily. You did yourselves proud at Bethlehem Moravian College and will do even better as you climb the educational ladder.

Student Council President’s Message The school year has come to an end and we must give God thanks for all that He has done. Without the Lord on our side where would we be? As we celebrate our 150th year of existence as an educational institution, it is indeed a pleasure been a part of this mile stone not only as a student but also as the Students’ Council President.

As we embark on a new era of education we must put only the best forward. Bethlehem is one great testimony to this statement. Form the classroom with the lecturers, the Teaching Practicum and the working world Bethlehem is among the world’s best.

The academic year 2010 – 2011 has shown great improvement. This was evident at the recent award ceremony held on April 11, 2011. Students were awarded in all areas of academics, which show great improvement over the year 2009- 2011. To God be the glory. Students did not only excelled in academics but other areas of College such as extracurricular activities. This was evident in sports, the arts and to the extent community outreach programme.

The year 2011-2012 has also brought good fortune to the students of Bethlehem Moravian College. This is so as 18 students were awarded scholarships from Bonnie Hoy and Associates, which is based in Canada. This is an increase over the previous school year when 11 students were given the scholarship for the first time. That goes to show that Bethlehem Moravian College not only has a good relationship with its clients (students) but also the world at large. As we move to become a University, one that provides world class education, promotes professionalism and continue to educate our teachers and business professions to the highest level.

Registrar’s Message It is my honour and privilege to be a member of the Bethlehem Moravian College community and to extend congratulations to the Beacon magazine and the college as it celebrates 150 years of existence.

This is indeed a significant milestone in the life of the college. The college has much to thank God for with regard to its achievements and successes, and the contribution of all our stakeholders.

Congratulations to all final-year students. As individuals, you are very important to this institution.

God made each person unique and great. On this premise, continue to strive for excellence and let the greatness in you be seen and felt by all whom you shall come in contact with. Continue to make a positive difference in everything you do as you travel on your journey.

Message From The Chaplain It is with a sense of pride that I write this message for the sesquicentennial copy of the Beacon. I am delighted to be a part of this rich history, but at the same time, I feel a sense of humility as I make my contribution. Not only has this institution, over these 150 years shaped many lives, but has also contributed tremendously to building our nation.

Bethlehem Moravian College has produced some of the finest professionals this part of the Western Hemisphere has ever seen. The vision of the great heroes of old has truly been realized. It is, therefore, appropriate that we laud this noble institution and all its stakeholders who have contributed significantly to educating our people. As we forge ahead, we must admit that much has been accomplished, and there are many more miles left to go. We are grateful to the Moravian Church in Jamaica, as well as governmental and nongovernmental organizations, for the unstinting roles they have played in building and maintaining this college.

I endorse the theme for this academic year, Bethlehemites: recognizing the past, celebrating the present, reclaiming the vision. Ebenezer! I hope that it has been, and will continue to be, a challenge, as well as a motivation to all of us. It is my hope that the devotional exercises that are conducted in the chapel and elsewhere on this campus have been a source of inspiration and encouragement, especially as we grapple with the many struggles that life has to offer.

To the graduating class of 2011, go forth and be champions of our nation. Congratulations on the completion of this leg of the race! Continue to face the challenges that lie ahead with determination and openness.

I wish for you all a bright future. Allow me to share with you one of my favourite scripture passages: I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

The Beacon Committee has put its effort in producing this sesquicentennial magazine. However, I encourage you to continue in service to your college and your country; knowing you will reap the seeds you have sown.

CCCJ Coordinator Message On the Occasion of the 150th Anniversary of Bethlehem Moravian College. I asked myself, what is significant about an anniversary?

Why do we say to ourselves that we want to have an event to mark the occasion? And my answer was that there are two reasons why we want to do it. One is to acknowledge our past; the other is to hope for the best for our future. Thus I salute the theme of our 150th Celebrations: Recognizing the Past, Celebrating the Present, Reclaiming the Vision. EBRNEZER But in between these two reasons lies something else – the present. We must never forget that the present is what we have been given from the past and what we can promise to the future. At present we can boast of offering Associate degrees to hundreds of young people in Business, Hospitality and Environmental studies. The Associate Degree is an intermediate professional qualification. The completion of this Degree enables students to perform at lower middle management position in business, government and non-profit organizations. An Associate Degree also matriculates students for the Bachelors’ Degree and Professional Programs. Our graduates have been employed is all areas of society; Banking, Insurance, business, education and tourism. Bethlehem is the embodiment of information which has helped change the circumstances, thinking and subsequent actions of many of its past students.

What happened when the leaders of Bethlehem decided to introduce the Community College section? They came up with a polytechnic vision which allowed more young people to benefit from a more diverse education. Even when some critics oppose the establishment of the Community College The administration pressed on and spread the college’s wings as far as Seneca in Canada and Monroe College in New York. This proves that no institution stay to be what their founders thought they would be.

If they did, they would simply be dead, memorials of a certain time and of certain ideas. Thus the Community college can boast of sharing over fifteen of the 150 years of this noble institution.

Luckily for us, Bethlehem Teachers College has not remained that. Bethlehem would be unrecognizable today to those “Heroes of Old.” And just as well. The whole of our modern society in Jamaica and particularly in St. Elizabeth is built now upon the idea of public education in a changing world that demands the training of other professions outside of teaching.

The last 150 years have shown that the College could survive, develop, and flourish. The challenge will be whether it can continue to flourish, change, and survive. I think those of us here with the elegant silver in our hair have got to listen to the students and ask ourselves: “What is it exactly that they’re telling us, not only about their experience, but also about how they think the world is evolving and how they can contribute to it while they are here within these walls.”

That for me is what the future can bring for Bethlehem as we strive to offer new associate degree, degree and masters courses. Not only now as it celebrate its sesquicentennial anniversary year, but hopefully for the hundreds of years to come.

Bethlehem Training College Bethabra 1861-1877

The history of Bethlehem Training College began not at Bethlehem, but at Bethabra, Newport, Manchester. There, on the third of June 1861, the training school, as it was called, was opened with three pupils. The principal was the reverend J.J. Seiler, and in a simple morning ceremony he asked God’s blessing on the institution to His service. In the afternoon, the Rev. Agustus Clemess of the governing board addressed the formulate three, and God’s blessing was again asked.

As we look back over the 100 years to that inconspicuous beginning we can feel that prayers were answered and the three pioneers were vanguards of a swelling procession of aspiring women teachers now in the thousands.

Those who visit Bethabra today can be shown a small block of rooms which were used for the purposes of the college, but otherwise there is no trace of 27 years of educational experience carried out at that station. There are some points worth making, however, about the early years of the college.

1. It was the first women’s training college in Jamaica and arose out of the same concern which had prompted the training of male teachers at Fairfield since 1840. Clemess wrote in 1859, “I am sorry to find that the female portion of the population of Jamaica is very degrading. The influence for good of a female training school would probably be greater than that of a training school of youths and it would certainly be more permanent, as such an institution would indirectly train good mothers.”

2. For the first few years, the students were under the direction of the Bethabra minister and his wife. They were

members of a family, and so from the beginning was established the family atmosphere which our friends feel has always been a characteristic of Bethlehem College.

3. The minister of the congregation was also principal of the college. This arrangement has always involved strain and overwork, and in 1863, 1887, 1894 and several times since, the health of the men in charge had broken down.

Since 1959, the principal of the college has been freed of the responsibility for Bethlehem congregation, and this step was long overdue. Nonetheless, the combination of duties has meant strong religious influence in the college with many opportunities for the students to assist in church work and to identify themselves with the community and its needs.

In 1861, there were in Jamaica over 50 Moravian elementary schools with over 4000 students, so there would be no difficulty in absorbing the students who qualified from Bethabra, but the early years were not very productive. One of the first three fentrances had been found within three months to be unsuitable and had to be dismissed. Three new students entered in October 1861, and

one more in January 1862, but by 1869 only 10 young women were trained, and were in active service in 10 Moravian schools. Meanwhile, in 1867, the Rev. Seiler’s health had broken down, and there was a succession of short-term principals; Revs E. Weiss, J.T. Zorn, and F. Moderah. The work during these years was largely supported by lady teachers who came from aboard. Miss M. Weiss, the sister of Rev. E. Weiss, was one of these, but most notable of all was Miss Suzette Walder, the sister of the pioneer missionary who gave his name Ashton.

Miss Walder, like her brother, came from Switzerland, and had her full share of the acter dynamic energy, and practical common sense, inspired by deep Christian faith. She arrived in Jamaica in 1874 to take charge of the college. By this time the enrolment was eight.

And fortunate indeed were these young ladies to come under Miss Walder’s influence. How up-to-date were her methods? It is now impossible to say, but several of whom she trained made their names well known in Jamaica’s primary education as excellent teachers. Prominent among these teachers was Mrs. Seal, affectionately known as ‘School-missus’ to the end of her days, and familiar to the generations of later Bethlehem students as a host who took them in until college accommodation could be found for them. Another who lived to be full of years was Miss Delfosse, who died in Mandeville well over 100 years old.

Miss Walder worked in close harmony with the director, the Rev. F. Moderah, and it was he who turned over the Bethabra infant school to the care of the college. The students in turn had charge of the infant school, but all went there every day for an hour’s teaching under Mr. Moderah’s supervision. In 1886, after 12 years’ service, Miss Walder left Bethabra. Colonel George Hicks inspector of school.

Her influence in the Moravian Church continued until her death many years later, and then indirectly by her daughter, Eda, who was to become the purposeful and warmly regarded wife of Bishop J. Kneale. Mention should be made of Miss Walder’s musical gifts. From as early as the Bethlehem open day of 1939 the students sang the Wordsworth “Daffodils” to a setting composed by the late Mrs. Hicks. The highly talented woman was the first of many to give of their best to the college.

The departure of Miss Walder was the beginning of the end for the Bethabra institution. Soon after, the Rev. Friedich Williger, although he only arrived from abroad in May 1886, had a breakdown and the premises followed suit. The buildings were too small and too dilapidated, and so, at the close of 1887 the governing board decided to remove to Bethlehem.

Early Days at Bethlehem 1888-1898

The Bethlehem diary for 1888 was written by the Rev. J. Harvey who had arrived out of England in February and who is at the time of publication, still living, in the tale of Wight England. In his diary, Mr. Harvey noted, “A long continued draught – this produces of course ‘hard times’ which was in some measure soften by the fact that employment could be procured by a considerable number of people at the building of the new training school for females which was began and the beginning of the year we are quite sure that this provided to be a great blessing to many who would otherwise have suffered great want owing to the scarcity of provision.”

Thus, right at the start, Bethlehem proved to be a useful source of revenue to the neighbourhood and this has continued ever since. The Malvern area is not blessed with rich soil, there are no substantial deposits of bauxite or other valuable minerals in these rocky slopes. So whatever its educational contribution its college have indisputable been of great economic value to hundreds of shop keepers, tradesmen and workers of the years, and has warded off in times of draught and unemployment the treat of widespread distress. We are always glad to point this out to administrators and other benefactors who may be considering a grant for college improvement and extension. Like the quality of mercy, it is twice blessed.

The formation stone for the new building was laid by the Moravian Bishop Hanna on February 21, 1888, and while it was being erected the college was carried on at Salem, Beeston Spring, Westmorland. The Rev. Samuel Negus was called a director in his diary 1889. He wrote, “Of the various reasons so often quoted and so seldom explained, for placing the school at Bethlehem extremely suitable for such an

institution, the only one we have ever heard given is that Bethlehem, from its position and circumstances, is a small congregation and is always likely to remain so”. In other words, the same man would be able to administer the college and care for the congregation.

Whether that was an inadequate reason or not, we should hardly agree from our mid-twentieth view point, with the Rev. S. Negus’ comment on the suitable position of the college.

At that time, the easiest way to get to Kingston was to ride by mule or buggy down the rocky and precipitous roads, some 12 miles or so, and hence to sail for Kingston by the coastal boat. Any goods for the college had to come by sea and were pulled up the 2000-foot climb on drays by mules. The railway ran no farther than Porus, and even when the line was extended to Montego Bay the journey from Malvern to Balaclava was an arduous one. Private arrangement had to be made to get down to Lovely Point near Santa Cruz, and there, three times a week, the mail coach would pick up passengers for the railways.

Car travellers in these days complain that the road is bumpy and dusty, or muddy, according to the season.

We can well imagine what it was like 70 years ago as the beasts of burden kicked up their hooves furiously at the crack of the driver’s whip. On the other hand, in those days, communication with Kingston was not the necessity it is today. There was no official relationship with any other college and although the Jamaica Government recognized Bethlehem as a voluntary training college, from 1885 correspondence with the education department was not frequent. After all, even in 1898 the department boasted a staff of only 15, from the Hon. Thomas Capper to the third-class clerk, and they had other things to do beside write to Bethlehem.

Black River was then a prosperous parish capital with a busy harbour and logwood, pu to, sugar and citrus.

Shopping and business generally could be best done there.

The new building at Bethlehem was occupied from 1889 onwards and the number of students increased to around 20. A maintenance grant was given by the government for each resident student, and for everyone who passed the government examination a bonus was added. Most of the expenses was

defrayed by these grants, but when the buildings were considerably enlarged and improved in 1895 additional boarders could be taken, and they had to pay £25 per annum. In 1898, the college was able to accommodate 30 students and The Government was able to pay for 20 of them.

These 10 years at Bethlehem were far from soon in spite of the expansion. Rev. S. Negus found the double burden of the college and congregation too heavy. His diary was not resumed after 1890, and in 1894 Rev. S. Bourquin, who succeeded him as minister of the congregation, not as college principal, wrote, “Brother

and Sister Negus left the congregation which they have served for about six years, after a trying period of illness.” It seems that during this illness the college had to be closed for a short time. Mr. Negus, after leaving for abroad, made a good recovery. Since returning to Jamaica was coutually principal of Shorthood Training College for a brief period.

recent years, a student came to tell the youthful and inexperienced principal that ‘her nerves were almost completely shattered’. Seriously alarmed, he sent her home immediately, and the following weekend was a little nonplussed to get a cheerful letter in which the student assured him of a complete recovery and her imminent return.

Meanwhile, the Rev. H. Seiler took over the work at Bethlehem and the diaries for 1896 and 1897 were written in his beautiful script, one of the best products of Victorian penmanship. He had some encouraging things to say.

Eighteen passes out of 21 in the 1895 exams, but also some problems to note. “Every day some of the girls are down with headache, fever, indigestion and other kindred ailments.

There may be exceptions, but the majority of girls seem to suffer under such mental pressure. One of the first-year students, I had to send home towards the end of the year, as she was quite overworked. For weeks, she could not sleep; she was troubled with a most painful headache. The fear of approaching death troubled her day and night”. Nonetheless, Seiler had an admirable sense of proportion as he went on to say, “We have had no really serious sickness during the course of this year.”

Another constant worry at Bethlehem had been a lack of water. Seiler mentioned this too. “The prolonged drought during the first part of the year gave us a great deal of anxiety.

Our girls also shared it. They became very uneasy when I told them one Friday that our water supply would last only for a few days, and that I should be obliged to send them home soon. I am sure that all of them gave heartfelt thanks to God for giving us a splendid shower the following day.” The Rev. Ashton echoes this in his diary for 1907, and wrote his students on July23: “My dear, we have had no rain yet, and there is so little water in the tanks that I dare not reopen the college until we have a more adequate supply.”

“We often point out to our students that their intellectual training is not the sole, nor the main object for which the institution is kept up, that we wish above all, to influence their heart and that we expect them to exercise (later on) a similar influence on the children which will be entrusted in their care.”

The report for 1897 is similar in tone. “The strong ones could easily endure the strain, but the weaker ones were greatly exhausted.” It is interesting, as one reads through the diaries to note the recurring theme of nervous ailments, hysteria and so forth. In 1910, for instance, there is the terae entry, “Daisy – got queer.” On March 29, 1931, we read, “Sent A.C. home suffering from funk and imagination,” and in

In 1946 (August) the Rev. R. J. Fleming wrote similarly, and as this history being compiled, it is to the tune of stone-breaking in preparation for additional tank to supply for our increase need.

Those tanks that we already have are precariously low.

Before passing on, it is only fair to Mr. Seiler and to Bethlehem to quote, “We often point out to our students that their intellectual training is not the sole, nor the main object for which the institution is kept up, that we wish above all, to influence their heart and that we expect them to exercise (later on) a similar influence on the children which will be entrusted in their care.” Sixty-four years, later we can still sincerely

say, Amen.

It was Mr. Seiler who planted the poinciana trees which now line the main drive and provide in May and June such a beautiful red canopy of blossoms.

One Tuesday, in October, he was busy putting in the seedlings. The afternoon was hot and sticky, and sudden heavy showers of rain descended. Anxious to complete his job and feeling that the young trees would benefit he continued with his work.

The seedlings were all planted, but Seiler caught a severe chill, which rapidly developed into pneumonia, and by Sunday the minister was seriously ill, so ill that the congregation assembled in the church were asked to sing in a lower voice his favourite hymn. Seiler, in his house a few yards away, could hear and was comforted. Far into Sunday night the church members woke and heard the toiling of the bell. They knew their minister had passed away.

For the latter part of the year there was no director for the college. The tutors, Mrs. S. Weiss, Miss S. U. McDaniel, Miss Granville and Miss A. Walder (niece of Mrs. Suzette Walder Hicks and daughter of the missionary) did their best to carry on, but all six thirdyear students failed the December examination. The results of the first- and second-year exam were less dismal with Harriott Legister in the honours division, but most passes were in the second and third class, and so there was not much cause for encouragement.

At the same time, the Jamaican Government, engaged on the policy of retrenchment which close down Fairfield Men’s Training College and many primary schools, decided to reduce the number of students for whom they would give maintenance grant. In 1898, there had been 26 such students; in 1899, there were only 17. The future was not promising.

The Rev. R. J. Fleming 1930-1947

By the mid-1920s, the importance of Bethlehem Training College was well appreciated by the Mission Board of the Moravian Church in London, and they started training a young man to take over the work

from the Rev. Ashton when his year of retirement should come around. The young man in question was Kenneth Craig, one of eight sons of the late Rev. Joseph Craig, formerly principal of Fairfield Men’s College. He was also older brother of Rev. Patrick Craig now minister of Bethlehem congregation and tutor at Bethlehem College.

Under the strain of concentrated study, however, Kenneth Craig’s eyesight began to fail and it was feared he would go blind. The doctors sent him off to prairie life in North America, and the Mission Board has had to find a new candidate for the post of principal of Bethlehem. They had recently accepted for mission work in east Africa the Rev. Roderick James Fleming, and he was busy learning Kiswahili and picking up as much medicine as he could from a lighting course at Livingstone College, London. They asked Fleming if he would forget the African call and go to Jamaica instead. Fleming agreed and so it was that a few months after Ashton’s retirement, he and his wife sailed for Jamaica. They landed in mid-January and arrived at Bethlehem at 5 p.m. on January 15, 1930.

Fleming had already had an interesting and varied life when he came to Jamaica. Born in 1881, he grew up in a congregational environment, and his teaching career started as early as 1895, as a pupil teacher in a Birmingham elementary school. Later, he took the opportunity for further study and gained the London Diploma of Theology. He served in the First World War, was gassed and suffered off and on for the rest of his life from ill-effects of this experience. In the difficult years after the war, he had various jobs, but his most momentous experience was in Germany.

There, he saw something of the work of the Moravian Church and also met Fraulein Marie Schooner in Leipeig. Both Fraulein Schoener and Roderick Fleming were attracted to missionary work and this common enthusiasm brought them closely together. They offered themselves to the Moravian Church, were accepted and got married. Both were well fitted to give valuable service to Bethlehem. The Rev. Fleming, for he was now an ordained minister, had his theological study, his educational experience and his brief but intensive medical training to offer. Mrs. Fleming has been brought up in the thorough and houseproud traditions of the middle-class German home and was also a chartered accountant.

It is most interesting to read through Fleming’s logbook, for one realizes how many of the now accepted features and customs of Bethlehem life were introduced during his time. He started the house system and very fittingly called one of the three houses after his predecessor, Ashton. The others were Aggrey of Achimots fame and Washington, after Booker T, not George. Fleming wrote appropriate songs for these houses as for the college and a musical friend of his gave them settings. These songs are still sung regularly. Every year, the houses were encouraged to make a presentation to the college of some needed piece of equipment or furniture and this they still do.

The Student Christian Movement (S.C.M.) was also initiated and met regularly. Frequent visitors to S.C.M. meetings in the ‘30s and early ‘40s were ‘Skipper’ and Mrs. Hallett, first of the YMCA and later of Jamaica Welfare; Margaret Stewart and Marjorie Stewart, also well known in Y and Welfare Company. The Literacy Circle began its career a little later and included then, as now, an annual elocution contest and Shakespeare Festival. The Old Students Association (O.S.A.) was inaugurated in 1931 and greatly helped in the organization of the annual retreats.

These retreat weeks were started before summer courses became numerous and when there were few opportunities for primary school teachers to refresh their minds after the unremitting grind of the schoolroom. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Brown, Miss E.I. Blake, the youthful Miss. M. M. Knight, and other members of staff in the ‘30s helped their principal and the O.S.A. to make the retreats notable and keenly anticipated.

There has never since been such a close association with the old students and Bethlehem is not today quite the mecca which it was then. One of the important tasks which await us as the second hundred years begins is to bring back into closer association the college and the alumnae.

As has already been suggested, the Rev. Fleming was well served by his assistants. Mr. Eric Brown arrived in July 1931, and did excellent work until the end of 1936, when he left to continue his career in British Honduras.

He soon became deputy director of education and later director of education in Belize. During the last few years, he has been working on important assignments in West Africa. While at Bethlehem, he not only played a full part in all the activities of the college, but also

interested himself in the young men of the Malvern neighbourhood and ran a very successful club for them.

His work at Bethlehem brought him into close association with Miss Dora Kember who had already been on the college staff some years. In February 1938, Mr. Brown returned briefly to Bethlehem and a very happy occasion was celebrated on February 2, when he was joined in marriage in the Bethlehem church to Miss Kember with the Rev. Fleming officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Brown have revisited Bethlehem several times since then and for many years their association with the college was kept alive by a regular flow of Honduran students to Bethlehem for training.

Miss Blake has never sought fame or praise, but her 21 years as head of Bethlehem School together with her lecturing in the college have had their permanent effects on hundreds of students and scholars.

Beginning in 1942 they continued to enrich our college life until the last Honduran student left in December 1957, by which time Belize had its own training college.

Bethlehem always welcomed the Honduran students.

Academically they were not invariably strong, but they usually contributed a vitality and freshness which enabled them to hold their own and made them very popular. Nearly all had a talent for drama which was well utilized during their college career.

Miss E. I. Blake came in October 1931 and was head of the practising school from that time until her retirement in 1952. She is still with us in Malvern and continuous to serve the cause of education with a small preparatory school at her home. She is also still a solid pillar of the Bethlehem Moravian Church.

Her family was one with long-standing Moravian connections at Lititz on the St. Elizabeth savannah

and several members of it have made their name in various professions.

Her sister has for years been wife of a Moravian missionary in Nicaragua.

One of her brothers was first a notable teacher at Christ Church, Christiana and at Cambridge and later inspector of schools. His son, Vivian, is the promising lawyer and politician.

Miss Blake has never sought fame or praise, but her 21 years as head of Bethlehem School together with her lecturing in the college have had their permanent effects on hundreds of students and scholars. They remember, and seek to copy, her utter reliability and genius for hard work, her neverfailing Christian charity which has never had her to see the best in everyone and to bring it out, and her versatility displayed among other manifestations by her training of church and school choirs, her numerous secretaryships (O.S.A., M.M.S.J., Church Officers Board, agricultural society, teachers’ association, etc) and her gift for entertaining, as well as thoughtprovoking oratory.

Miss Millicent Knight was appointed to the Bethlehem staff straight from her prefectship at Hampton School in July 1930. She was several years younger than many of the students she taught, but this neither deterred her nor demoralized them. Miss Knight, like so many who have served Bethlehem, had many strings to her bow. She continues in these days to be a notable mathematician, and she has frequently served as English tutor.

In her early days at college, however, she appears to have been a physical training specialist, and the drills which she organized and led on open days and other public occasions received high praises. Miss Knight served as college tutor for11 years. In 1941 (June

14), she temporarily went into exile, first at St. Hilda’s, Browns Town, St Ann, and then at Toronto University.

She returned in August 1949 to become vice-principal, but career in this role must be resumed in a later chapter.

Among other tutors at Bethlehem during this period who should be mentioned are: Miss Elsa Smith (19361944), sister of a Moravian teacher in Nicaragua and herself formerly a teacher there; Mr. F. A. Myers (19381944) who taught at the college for several years after his retirement in 1938 as inspector of schools; Miss Beryl Loftman (1940-1945) (now Mrs. Bailey on the staff of the UCWI), one of the most promising students of her time who returned as college tutor the year after she ceased to be a student; and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Grant who came to Bethlehem in January 1945 and stayed till 1948. Mr. and Mrs. Grant played an important part in keeping the college going in the early years of 1945 when the principal was desperately ill.

Mr. Grant, during his time, started levelling the playfield which is now in use. Mrs. Grant (herself a

former student) developed strongly the musical side of college work and composed a cantata which the students sang in 1947. This occasion was largely instrumental in raising £50 for the repair of the church organ. After they left Bethlehem, Mr. Grant was for some years assistant master at Calabar and then entered the ministry of the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Grant has ever since leaving Bethlehem administered the Preceptor’s Institute which has helped to prepare large numbers of young women for Bethlehem and other training colleges. Mention should finally be made of Miss Marion Holle (1930-1944), the efficient and conscientious matron of the college for many years who was sadly missed when she eventually left in response to urgent home calls.

During the first 30 years of this century, the student enrolment did not change much. The accommodation was suitable for 30 students and from 17 with government scholarships in 1899, the number rose in time to 20 and then to 25. When Fleming became principal, he took steps to increase this number, and

in 1931 started the day-student system with six such students. Day students were in every respect like resident ones, but went out each night to approved lodgings in the neighbourhood and returned in time for prayers next morning. By developing this system Fleming speedily increased Bethlehem’s enrolment.

Mr. N.W. Manley attended the St. Elizabeth Federation of Teachers on May 31, 1947. Mr. B.H. Easter, the director of education, and Mr. G.D. Nelson, well-known inspector of schools, were both close friends of the principal, and the log book records their visits with almost monotonous regularity.

He enlarged the college buildings at the same time. In 1937, new teachers’ quarters were built, thus releasing their former rooms for students. Thirty-eight residents could now be accommodated. In subsequent years, more day students were enrolled and a few more residents taken in, until in 1947 a total of 72 was reached – 40 residents bonded by The Government, seven residents paying full fees, 17 day students and eight unofficial students receiving tuition for external examinations.

Another kind of visitor to the college must also be mentioned. Soon after his arrival in Jamaica the author of these notes was walking up the drive way when terrible screams piercing the air emerged. It seemed to be coming from a little room below the garage.

Punctuated by brief moments of sinister, one might say, deathly silence, there were six of them.

Aghast and irresolute, the newcomer stopped in his tracks, wondering whether the police, the nurse, or the college handyman was the most appropriate help to enlist. A moment, later the garage door opened and a young woman staggered out, a handkerchief to her mouth and her hand clutching some trophy.

In addition to the building already mentioned, 1932 saw an extension to the practising school in the form of additional classrooms and a veranda. In 1936, Dr. and Mrs. Walter Jessup of the Carnegie Foundation were brought to Bethlehem by Mr. B.H. Easter, the director of education, and they liked so much what they saw that a grant of £250 was made by the Carnegie Foundation toward extensions to the domestic science quarters. These extensions were carried out in 1939. An equally momentous visit was that of a former director of education, Mr. S.R. Bammond, to Bethlehem in July 1941.

At this time, he was educational advisor to Sir Frank Stockdale of Colonial Development and Welfare.As a result of his recommendation, £3000 was granted from OD and W Funds, and in 1946 the assembly hall block and new dormitory (known as Boston) rose from the rocky hillside. These buildings were officially opened on June 29 of that year. These were the last extensions in Fleming’s time. They could not be used fully for a whole year as a further grant of £600 was required to furnish them.

Bethlehem continued throughout these years to be well known, well respected and much frequented.

In addition to the visitors already mentioned, His Excellency the Governor and Lady Denham came to Bethlehem on May 18, 1935. Lady Huggins was here on June 8, 1945, and Mr. W. A. Bustamante (as he was then called), accompanied by Mr. B.B. Coke, spent a few hours at the college on September 1, 1946 and

Behind her followed the Rev. R.J. Fleming. He chuckled and said, “She made a fuss, didn’t she?

Her teeth are bad, bad and I had to extract six.”

Such occasions were frequent at Bethlehem in those days. Fleming had picked up with astonishing facility in a very short time the rudiments of medicine and dentistry and practised regularly for the benefit of the poor people of Malvern. He made no charge, but invited small contributions to the Church. Not only were teeth extracted, splinters were pulled out, torn limbs sewn up, arms put into slings – everything in fact

which Fleming had anticipated doing for east Africans.

His medicine room below the garage was stacked with bottles and instruments and many remember with respect his healing skills.

Fleming was already in his middle years when he became principal of Bethlehem and by the beginning of 1945 he was “played out”. Frequently during his 15 years in Jamaica he had spells of ill-health and often when he was well Mrs. Fleming had been prostrated by serious sickness. Some of the causes of strain have already been indicated. To these should be added the hurricane of 1933 which ripped off much of the church roof and caused damage to college buildings. Then there were the difficulties of staffing particularly during the war years, and for a time in 1944, Fleming and Miss Loftman were the only academic tutors able to carry on.

In addition, there were the cares of the Church.

Fleming was not only minister of Bethlehem, but also, at different times, of other congregations in the area which Often, when staff and happened to be students were long without a minister.

Often, when staff and students were long abed a lamp would be still glimmering from the office and the late

prowler peeping in might have seen Mrs. Fleming poring over a tremendous ledger over her shoulders trying to balance recalcitrant accounts. However late the hour Mrs. Fleming would rise punctually next day at 4 a.m. to begin her cleaning of the house and take up her multifarious duties.

This could not last long. Fleming was sitting watching a demonstration class given by one of his students late in February 1945. Suddenly, he collapsed and taken dangerously ill to Black River Hospital. There he stayed until May 9, and most of those who knew him felt he would never recover. They did not reckon with his tremendous will to live. Later, in May 1945, he was brought back to Bethlehem, and in June actually resumed his activities.

He was able to carry on effectively for two whole years though perhaps not with the same energy and zest as in earlier days. At any rate, he handed over a college in good condition to his successor in July 1947, and he naturally received many heartfelt messages of appreciated and gratitude at his farewell functions.

With Mrs. Fleming he retired to Newport, and laboured there as minister of the Bethabra congregation until his final illness and death early in 1950.

Too little has been said of Mrs. Fleming’s work.She was the college accountant throughout her husband’s career, and in her books, as in her house and in church work she was equally neat, accurate and thorough.

In 1933, she bore a son, John, a very popular young man with the students and congregation, and his care naturally took up time and energy for a few years. But neither his nor her bouts of sickness kept her long from her duties, the most important of which she considered looking after her husband and ministering to his needs.

He could never have done all he did without her constant support.

R.J. Fleming was a man of restless energy and great ability. He was quite a different type from his predecessors and that disappointed some who had grown to love and revere Daddy Ashton. Even some of the shapers of policy in the early forties do not appear to have valued fully the work Bethlehem was doing in spite of the very appreciative but well-merited comments by Mr. Hammond quoted in the appendix.

The Continuation Committee which reported in 1946 suggested the discontinuation of Bethlehem as a

training college, and it substitution by a new building in another area.

But by this time Fleming had made the question an academic one. He had secured the OD and W Grant of £3000 and with the new promises assured the survival of Bethlehem. It was a fitting climax to his career. He was like the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11:39, “And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, receive not the promise: God having provided some better timing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.” It is a challenge to us who follow to carry forward the work of Ashton and Fleming nearer towards perfection. Mihi Cura Futuri These years of the early ‘60s are exciting times for Jamaica. There is the prospect for federation just around the corner. There are the bauxite companies and other industries, particularly the so-called “tourist industry”, promising increased wealth. There is the rapid development of education in new primary schools, growing secondary schools, technical schools and colleges, and in The University College of the West Indies. The training colleges are sharing in this expansion and development, and are a very important part of it, as without teachers all the other educational

schemes must lag.

Bethlehem’s expansion has been notable and has been indicated in the previous chapter. There is, however, more still to be done. Our biggest need is for a science laboratory. One was originally contemplated and £2000 set aside for it from the Development Funds of £26000. It soon became clear, however, that £2000 in these days of rising prices would be quite inadequate. Moreover, an increased water supply was an urgent priority. The science laboratory, estimated at £10000, is now, therefore, at the top of our list.

Almost as pressing is the need for an auditorium, assembly hall/theatre. For years, our present assembly hall has proved inadequate for the numbers that throng Bethlehem on open days. It also offers for inducements to the keen dramatic producer to put on plays and entertainment, and Bethlehem students have always been enthusiastic actresses. Then again, we have no hospital and nurses’ quarters, though we have a highly competent nurse.

Many pages could be taken up arguing the case for this new building and that, but such pleading would be out of place in a centenary booklet. Speaking briefly

we are ready, if the educational authorities endorse recent recommendations, to double our enrolment from 120 students to 240, all fully residential, and to make the college co-educational by admitting men, as well as women.

We hope that before the last copies of this history have been consigned to the flames of thumbed-out existence this programme will have been achieved.

Though the minister of education, the Hon. F.A. Glasspole, a good friend of Bethlehem, may not necessarily endorse all our schemes and pay all our bills, yet we are happy to feel that he does recognize the contribution Bethlehem is making to teacher training and wishes to encourage and extend it wherever possible.

Probably about the time this history is published Jamaica will also be able to read the report of the committee appointed to consider the development of teacher training edited by Mr. P.C. Evans, until recently chief education advisor. Mr. Evans was also a good friend of this college during his stay at this college, and if the Government does sponsor further development much thanks will be due to them.

Although Jamaica has been making such big strides in so many fields, there has not yet been a similar spiritual and religious revival. It is worth nothing that in 1860 the land experienced such a revival in several denominations and the impetus to start training women teachers may have arisen from the new life in the church at that time. Bethlehem is not a theological seminary or a training ground for evangelists, but our work and interests have always had a strongly religious bias and we believe that the best foundation for our students’ future work is a strong faith in God’s calling, coupled with a genuine love for young children. On this can be built a sound knowledge of educational principles and a skilled practical method, and these we seek to foster. But first things come first and the climax of the week’s work is always Saturday night prayers with public worship on the Lord’s Day to give new inspiration and energy to the tasks ahead.

And so ready to start the next 100 years, “seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses we lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and run with patience the race that is set for us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”

A Reflection On Malvern Christina Campbell Malvern is situated in the cool hills of Santa Cruz, in the parish of St. Elizabeth. It is a large community comprising over 2,000 residents, most of whom are farmers, shopkeepers, taxi operators, and business operators. Malvern is a very peaceful, religious and industrious community, which is loved by many citizens.

The development of Malvern started in the early 19th century. The first establishment of Malvern community by the early developers was the development of small businesses such as tailor shops, small shops, one of which is Goldsmith. Malvern has a lot of service offering which is vital and of great importance to the residents. These services include a library, a police station, a gas station, a health centre, a guest house, a post office, churches and schools.

A famous developer and citizen of Malvern is Mr. O. R Clarken, who once owned a large area of the community. He built and rented business places to residents until they could afford to pay him. He was also a producer of coffee and pimento and was one of the largest producers of these crops. The community gradually grew and developed by the sale of these crops.

Malvern is well known for its cool weather and green scenery, which makes it ideal for farming, the major economic activity in the community, and the source of income for most families.

The citizens of Malvern decided to establish the Malvern Citizens’ Association in order that social events could be planned for. The social events that are

often held are football, parties at the ‘Vault’ and street dances.

There are a number of well-known persons who once lived in the community of Malvern. These persons are Wilmot Perkins, a journalist; Sir Donald Sangster, the second prime minister of Jamaica and a member of the Jamaica Labour Party; Barbara Gloudon, playwright and radio journalist; and Elaine Perkins, a writer and producer of Jamaican radio dramas.

Located in Malvern are important educational institutions. These include Hampton School for girls, Munro College for boys, Bethlehem All-Age School, and Bethlehem Moravian College. Malvern Branch Library is very useful to the students of the community.

It contains information which is of great importance to us teachers in training. Other important buildings found in the community are the police station, supermarkets, restaurants, a gas station, a book store and a health centre.

The nearest town to Malvern is Santa Cruz and so residents of the community travel by taxi on a daily basis for shopping, because no market is here in Malvern, a wonderful and a beautiful place to live.

The Story of Rev. Macleavy Mr. Macleavy was born and grew up in England.

His father was a minister of religion of a Moravian Church and his mother was an active member.

There were no competition between the church and society because Sundays were dedicated to church. As a teenager he dedicated his life to church service, he entered theological college at eighteen (18) years old. He spent six (6) years in theological studies, mainly bible studies and one (1) year doing teachers diploma.

He was teaching in England when an appeal was made from Jamaica to England needing educators.

He was chosen to do School Practice and Education, he was very enthusiastic about it, not only for the teaching but for the opportunity to visit a foreign land.

He got married in January 1945.

He didn’t have any other means of travel except by boat, because of World War 2 (1945). It took him six (6) weeks from Liverpool to Kingston because the boat was originally destined to Curacao.

He had to travel without his wife. he came on Jamaican shores on April 30, 1945. His wife came in December, New Years Eve. Their union produced three (3) sons.

from hand pumps and there were also not enough sanitation. Soon after, amenities were installed such as Delco plant to provide electricity.

The school population was between 30-50, 25 of which were residential students, they came from all over the island. Rev. Henry Ward sent members from his congregation which was Presbyterians, to be trained. At the time there were four (4) teachers colleges in the island, namely Shortwood for girls, St. Josephs, Bethlehem and Mico for men, which had the largest enrolment. There were 340 students in training for the entire island, each course lasted for three (3) years with exception to teachers who were already in the profession at the primary level, where they all did one (1) year. Students who were going on teaching practice mainly went to Bethlehem Primary, Epping Forest and Santa Cruz. In 1947 he took over as principal, at that time the student population was 160. The library was then added and the building overlooking the playfield.

The dress code of students were ordinary everyday clothes but had uniforms for special occasions. It was also mandatory for every student to attend Sunday worship.

The main event for the college was its annual speech day (open day) where families’, friends and visitors came in and do their inspections and view exhibitions of students work. They had clubs such as the Student Christian Movement (SCM) and drama which was very active.

When he started at Bethlehem, it was very strange at first for him mainly because there was no running water, but tanks which was by old manse. Students had to bring buckets and fill

When asked about his time spent at Bethlehem he explained that his time at Bethlehem was a very fulfilling one. He is happy and satisfied in so many ways, he had formed great friendship with many students and still keeps a little contact with them for over 60yrs. There were great relationships between students and staff. He further stated that it was not only in teaching but sharing meal times with students.

Long-Serving Members Of Staff Mrs. Lorine Bateman 18 Years of Service

Mrs. Lorine Bateman, one of Bethlehem’s stalwart lecturers, has been with the institution for approximately 18 years. Originally from Westmoreland, she moved to Malvern in 1985. She then worked a year at St. Elizabeth Technical High School, and then five years at Munro College before assuming her role here at Bethlehem in 1993, as lecturer in the education department.

A year after, she helped to establish the business department, under the directive of Dr. Watson and Mrs. Valorie Tingling. She now serves as the head of this department.

Love for her students and business education in general is what keeps Mrs. Bateman at Bethlehem for all these years. As a keen advocate for the development of the college, she has many visions for the college. Among them are: Bethlehem becoming the leading tertiary institution providing education for the country, an extension of the programmes being offered, and a closer link between the college and the Malvern community, especially in the areas of science and business.

Mrs. Bateman’s philosophy for the classroom, “Never tell a student that he/she cannot, every student has the ability to go beyond his/her next level”, has served her well over the years. She has a very good relationship with her students, as can be observed during her interactions with them. She relates that her favourite aspect of teaching is the delivery of the lesson, interacting with students and seeing them mature to assume their role as professionals.

Lorine Bateman is a remarkable educator. The Bethlehem Moravian College has undoubtedly benefitted tremendously from her 18 years of unbroken service. Since she has no plans for early retirement, the college has so much more to gain

from this phenomenal woman as she continues to use her innovative mind to seek out opportunities for the advancement of the college.

Mr. Halston Clarke By: Sanya Seaton

Humble, understanding and brilliant are just a few words which one might quickly use if asked to describe the characteristics of Halston Clarke. After leaving Clarendon College, Mr. Clarke joined Bethlehem Moravian College family in 1991 which amounts to 20 years of service as a mathematics lecturer. He is loved by his students as they can always depend on him to explain concepts and motivate them to pass exams.

Mr. Clarke proved his ability as a competent lecturer as he has held the post of senior and principal lecturer and now heads the mathematics department. In his own words, he said, “I will forever help students in the field of mathematics as I have done in the past, as I am happy when I see my students achieving.”

I deemed it a wonderful privilege and an estimable honour to have been the one to interview one of the longest members of staff at Bethlehem Moravian College.

Dr. Heather Sherwood started this journey on the 1st April 1994. With a feeling of insecurity she thought the ability to function at the tertiary level was impossible for her but everything changed while working here, as she is more confident in her position at the college.

as the college is more advance technologically. It is also fully developed and well established. There is always room for was some of the respond made by Dr. Sherwood for the college and what it has to offer.

When asked if planning to retire at any time soon she laugh, then a bright yes came after.

Mr. George Henry

Many have entered and greats have passed. George Henry is no stranger. He entered the Bethlehem family in 1989 as an assistant physical education lecturer after his tenure at the prestigious G.C. Foster College. From interactions and character analysis it may be deduced that Mr. Henry is an optimistic, confident and humble individual who believes in treating all persons equally.

Guided by the words, ‘what you can do today never put off for tomorrow’, he is influenced by the likes of Lucinda Peart, Randolph Watson, Edward Seaga and Ben Carson, George Henry is the epitome of greatness; a proven fact as he has excelled during his tenor throughout the ranks of senior and principal lecturer, head of department, staff representative, Acting Vice Principal and Board member. Mr. Henry has left a lasting impression and legacy for past, present and future students of Bethlehem Moravian College. May he continue in the path of greatness.

Batch Reports Third Year Batch Leaders Report Stevon Sheriffe (Batch Leader)

Mr. Third year batch leader Stevon Sheriffe: a humble servant of God with all the requisite skills of a leaderpoised, verdant and always in control.

Question: What were the major obstacles of the third year batch and what solutions were administered?

Mr. Sheriffe was interviewed by Jovan Morgan to ascertain his views on the journey of the third year batch to the peak of their successful departure.

Mr. Sheriffe: As the leader, my team and I sought suitable ways of curbing this via social activities (lymes, concerts, spiritual interventions, peer-to-peer reasoning etc.)

This is what he had to say: Question: What are the major contributions that the third year batch has made to the development of the college?

Mr. Sheriffe: The batch has sought to the development of the college by means of excelling work in academics; we have also made strides in strengthening the image of the institution through the superior professionalism we have expelled in the planning and execution of activities as well as programs aimed towards community and school intervention. In essence we have aided the previous batches tremendously in building the Brand “Bethlehem Moravian College”- a Mecca in Tertiary Education.

Mr. Sheriffe: The batch’s major obstacle stemming from previous years was that of unity, there was a sense of independence among everyone that lead to little or no correlation or interpersonal interactions.

Question: After sighting such a problem, what solutions were sought towards curbing it?

Question: Is there anything that happened throughout the batch’s journey that has saddened or affected you in any way?

Mr. Sheriffe: Actually there is…throughout the years I was saddened by the departure as well as halt of persons who had started the journey August 2008 along with the rest of us, due to lack of; funding, matriculation; or personal reasons/grosses.

This has saddened me because we are a family and its hurts when a family member leaves.

Question: Albeit all the obstacles and successes, what is the legacy that the third year batch has left for future batches?

Answer: United, our batch has overcome many obstacles.

These momentous successes were realized only through determination and hard work; the third year batch herby passes on its many achievements and tenacious attitudes as legacy for it to be a beacon to those who will rise after us.

Question: In your opinion, do you believe that the synergy between the third year batch and Associate degree students has borne any fruitage of success?

Mr. Sheriffe: The relationship we have developed is profound and exemplary and has borne many fruits of success. The fusion has allowed for a host of ideas and a greater wealth of resources that have been remarkable towards our project undertakings and successes. I salute both groups as they have truly exemplified professionalism and tenacity.

Question: What are the most memorable moments experienced by your batch?

Mr. Sheriffe: As a group we have shared many great moments, among those cherished are the unforgettable days as Fresher’s during orientation-gracing the stage with our licenses’ plate and performing for approval; as well as the day when Ashton was caught ablaze and the whole group rallied to protect peers as well as property. These were truly moments of mixed emotions never to be forgotten.

Second Year Batch Leader Report Sashane Hall (Batch Leader)

Life is not a road paved with gold, but instead is a highway into the unknown that only the strong and the brave at heart can travel. I deem it an honour to once more be associated with this noble institution, Bethlehem Moravian College, and this magazine in the capacity as second year batch leader, especially in this our 150th year of continued excellence.

I am overwhelmed that my colleagues have seen it fit that I may serve another term on the Students’ Council Body. I must use this opportunity to show my respect to all my batch mates who have stayed the course and continued working towards success in all aspects of their tertiary lives, amid the many challenges. It is these challenges that have caused us to grow closer and closer as a family, bearing in our minds at all times that unity is strength.

I must admit that the academic year had its challenges, but we did surmount them all with hard work and dedication. As batch leader I faced hurdles in carrying out my many tasks, although I am a strong and hardworking individual. If it were not for various persons I would not have been able to be successful.

This special group of individuals I speak of is no other than my Second Year Planning Committee comprising a group of vibrant, enthusiastic young people working towards a common goal. As a result, I must use this opportunity to say BIG UP! To all of you my colleagues in second year, I pray that you all will continue to work towards keeping the beacon of this blessed and noble institution burning bright. We are the future of this society. Let us, therefore, continue to be positive trendsetters both in our institution and the wider community, remembering that the pen is mightier than the bullet, so, no matter what, ensure that your academic goals are met as that is your main purpose at Bethlehem.

My colleagues, my friends, I must end by saying, aim high because time flies, and it waits on no man. For like the son of man cometh and no man knoweth the time nor the hour so will our trials creep up on us. Do remember, “Mihi Cura Futuri”, my care is for the future.

Advanced Placement Report Haile A. Clacken

The Advanced Placement group started out in high spirits being welcomed to join the general cohort at BMC and to be graduated in the prophetic year 2012.

We were offered to take courses from all three years and numbered 17 students at the outset, but 13 of us were regular day students, and the others parttime. Two students eventually left the programme to continue elsewhere as the demands of part-time proved extremely difficult.

We were offered a special place in the refurbished chapel and to pray for the school on college Sunday in the first term. We also participated in the Amos Comenius Talent Showcasing and on Sports Day. Our programme offered us the chance to work with all three years and we organized study groups which worked excellently.

Ee were particularly impressed with the present second year and felt honored that our graduation would coincide with theirs. The third-year students demonstrated camaraderie as a group and five of them impressed us exceedingly at the 150th Anniversary celebration where they served tirelessly. We were also honoured to sing on the choir that day.

We were approached by the first-year students for help in math and English,, and it was suggested to us by a member of faculty to organize a Work Center for Student Help. In the meantime, we devoted ourselves to their assistance and in the second semester offered much to our own personal sacrifice.

It is our burning hope to establish a functional and formal work centre in the 2012 academic year where students can get assistance as is common at other universities. We also hope that the stewards of our administration in their nobility would realize their plan for a new library and we modestly estimate that the present one could be granted to us for the purpose of a work help center.

We pray that our God and King will grant our school, the name bearer of our Lord’s birthplace, an unshaken faith in pureness of heart to endure in this Aquarian Age and second millennium so that we too may do our part in the service of establishing His kingdom as the prevailing state of men’s affairs.

Over the last year since the students of the associate degree programme have enrolled into this noble institution, they have been actively involved in many co-curricular activities at the college. Students of the group have taken part in activities, such as netball, football, cricket, and have participated with the cultural/ heritage group which has won many gold medals in competitions at the local and national levels. The Heritage Quiz Team came second and won a trophy for the college.

The continuing education group of 2010-2011 academic year has been actively involved in the events that took place at this noble institution.

College Sundays were attended by most of the students from the group along with some of the planning of these events.

Graduation and carol service were also part of the major college events which the group has participated and helped in the planning aspect.

The associate degree group of the 2010-2011 academic year has been actively involved in planning and participating in the major events that took place at this noble institution such as college Sundays, graduation, carol service, awards ceremony, the 150th anniversary service and the inauguration of Bethlehem week which had five days of important activities consisting Jan Amos Comenius day, health Fair and Jamaica Day. All these events were attended by the majority of the students from the group, along with some participating in and planning of these events.

As for participating on sports day, the members of the group made sure they got involved in the sporting activities that were done at the college, such activities include cheerleading, cross country, clean-up day, and the activities schedule for sports day. Their contributions were significant in every way to their respective houses.

The 150th anniversary opening service of the Bethlehem Moravian College was attended by students from the group, who made every effort to attend and help make the event a success. Bethlehem week would not be passed up by the group, and we ensured that we participated in the week’s proceedings which also turned out into successfully.

Members of the group made sure they got involved in the sporting activities that were done at the college. Some of the students were members of the football team and also part of the cricket team. The students of the continuing education group were actively involved in Sports Day and the events leading up to it. Their contributions were significant in every way to their respective houses. This year’s continuing education group has been integrally involved with the events of the college. We have enjoyed most of the year and wish to enjoy the rest of the year.

May God continue to guide, protect and bless us all.

This year’s associate degree group which consists of business studies and hospitality and tourism management have been integrally involved with the daily life of the college, and in collaboration with the teacher education students and the continuing education students we have created a flower garden for our first year project, as the other year groups all have done a project as well. We have enjoyed our year and wish to enjoy the rest of our tenure at this noble and well-rounded institution. Thanks to all who have helped us and made life much easier living on campus. May God continue to bless us all.

EXTRA CURRICULAR REPORT Message from the Students’ Relations Officer It is with extreme pleasure that I report to prestige Bethlehemites on this our momentous sesquicentennial anniversary. The period of service 2010-2011 presented various superior and ghastly moments.

Working within the portfolio alongside fellow council members and administrators allowed for capitalization on strengths and utilization of them to overcome unforeseen obstacles. Throughout the period, motivation was nestled from the expression “dare to be different”. In an aim to improve the service we offered to the college community and other stakeholders; we reviewed the past, made corrections, and, alongside our ace ideas, metamorphosed the service into

something more profound, guided and superior.

We were thus able to concrete our say in the operations of the college by diversifying into new committees on the board of management, strengthening the students’ voices by joining various unions for students’ welfare, as well as reconnecting with national councils and international stakeholders. In return, the college community was a beneficiary of superior representation and was empowered through the stance and advice provided. Students’ life and comfort were also addressed. Problems were communicated and solved amicable and timely with the aid of the necessary personnel.

In terms of students’ relations, we are still distant from our goal; howeve, the Eiffel Tower was not built in one year. Even though a grand service was provided, there is still need for rectification. Tertiary students are a beacon of power in the world and Bethlehemites must be cognizant of that. If we work in synergy, there is nothing we cannot achieve. My tenure is over, but my work was not in vain. To my successors, may you continue in the path of greatness by humbly providing quality service to your constituents. Sic Luceat lux!

CLUBS & SOCIETIES REPORTS Moravian Tertiary Students Association (MTSA) Report It is with great pleasure that the Moravian Tertiary Students Association (M.T.S.A) congratulates Bethlehem Moravian College on their 150th anniversary and years of excellent service, to the community and by extension the country. Under guidance of the Theme: Recognizing the Past, Celebrating the Present, and Reclaiming the Vision EBENEZER!, this was a successful year as we were able to overcome

obstacles of the past, maximize on the present and look with optimism to the future. We, therefore, pray that the college will continue to uphold its high standards, and continue to produce students of the highest calibre.

The association, therefore, implores all students to endure with a strong determination to attain success and be a beacon of greatness.

Difficulties might arise, but as the Jamaican term states, “If yuh want good your nose haffi run”. So let us continue to work hard and leave our footsteps for others to follow.

The M.T.S.A will continue to cater for the spiritual needs of students and help to keep them in the right path.

Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) Report 7 p.m. and fellowship lasts until 9 p.m. This group undertakes various activities each Monday night and throughout the devotional activities for the college. The activities are inclusive of bible study and prayer which is usually hosted by the community pastor of Malvern, Pastor Scott, a vibrant and radical man of God. There is also a praise and worship session, which is done by the different groups.

The universities and colleges Christian Fellowship is an interdenominational body that has been operating in Bethlehem Moravian College for years. The group has many leaders which include Christine McLean-Davy, president; Vice President Jevaun Smith; secretary, Tracia Foster and Treasurer Diane Bryce. However, its existing members also play an important role in the fellowship of the group.

The Advent Fraternity Report The academic year is drawing to a close and it is indeed time for us to reflect on the things that we have accomplished and hope to accomplish by the end of this year. We the advent fraternity meet twice per week, on Wednesday nights for prayer meeting and Friday nights for vespers to welcome the Sabbath.

On Sabbaths we worship at the Malvern Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) where the members of the fraternity are regarded as family. We participate in the programmes of the church and offer help where it is needed. This year, the fraternity worked along with the Malvern S.D.A church in community outreach programmes, distributing tracks and witnessing and conducting various street meetings.

On campus, we normally take responsibility for the devotional exercise on specific days. Each year the college normally hosts a week of spiritual awareness in the month of October. In this week, all the

denominations represented on campus are responsible for a specific night. The fraternity was responsible for Friday night of that week and we held a wonderful service where we reflected upon the blessing of the week and featured good singing and inspirational readings which the fraternity taught was the ideal way to end that week.

The fraternity also worships on campus on specific Sabbaths where only the students take part. However, it has been the tradition of the fraternity to host an annual chapel day. In celebration of the 150th year of the life of this noble institution we hope to host a grand music day on the 14th May 2011 and by the grace of God our Lord and saviour this day will be a success.

HOUSE REPORTS

Aggrey House Report Once a year, in the month of March, Bethlehem Moravian College hosts its annual sports day in which all students participate, as well as lecturers and administrators.

We have many races and events which demonstrate the members of this college achievements in sporting activities – these activities helps to build their holistic development. For the year 2010-2011, it was no different, in fact, it was exceptional.

Funds for the house in question was generated by means of ice cream sale, the throwing of dues from house members, and contributions of money and other kinds from lecturers and administrators who are members of the house. These funds were distributed wisely by our treasurer, Miss Latoya Sharpe, who used this capital to purchase much-needed material for cheerleading gear and refreshments for the athletes who worked tirelessly in contributing to the achievements of the house.

Achievements for the house for 2010-2011 were tremendous. Male athlete of the year which was given to Kemar Blackwood, cross country champions Ryan

Myles and Kemar Blackwood, Haile Clacken, Aberdene Mitchell, Dale Brooks, Ricardo Clarke and Royston Tibby were among many others. The females also contributed and were successful in many track and field events. They also made their priceless contributions. Some of them included Sean McIntosh, Tameka Wright, Amoy Williams, Kimberly Grant and Shenika Holligsworth.

Though the house suffered an unintentional loss, the efforts made by all members of Aggrey House was indeed priceless and we should all applaud our work and contribution made, be it win or lose. We wish, however, to congratulate Ashton House for their sixth consecutive win and Washington House for the improvement made over the years. Notwithstanding, we do intend to be bigger and better in 2011-2012, and all the other years to come, as Aggrey House continues to be the most outstanding house at Bethlehem Moravian College.

Ashton House Report The new school term began on a wonderful note, as we welcomed our new Ashonites, who included first years, continuing education, advanced placement, as well as the returning college students. The new students did a great job in their orientation sports day as they were very participative and energetic. They were encouraged to keep the spirit going, for all the other upcoming sports competition in the new year. As the semester ended, the third-year teacher education students (including me) prepared to go on the teaching practicum exercise.

Nonetheless, as Ashonites, we knew that there was work to get done.

Ashton House participated in various events leading up to our sports day such as various field events, and cross country which we did not win. However, we still held the faith and we were not discouraged. The big day drew near and when it arrived it was filled with mixed emotions as in the first few results we were in the third place.

Some of our top athletes such as Taffari Lynfat and Nadia Dunkley, among others, were injured and though we did not win the cheerleading, “we beat dem bad”.

We also participated in the John Amos Comenius display which we were placed first, and this was one of our motivators.

Special thanks must be extended to the staff and students who assisted or supported Ashton House in whatever way in order for our victory. To Lance Heymans, Michael Holness and Onico Kerr who did jerked chicken in order to raise funds for the house and to the ladies who live on Hastings Hall: Room 1 (especially Shanika Roye), who gave their all in preparing the house for the big day.

To all who participated, supported and cheered on sports day and other events, a big thank you!

As I leave, I encourage all the Ashonites to keep the trophy and keep the yellow, gold and black banner high.

We can never forget this time, when Bethlehem Moravian College celebrates its 150th anniversary and Ashton was able to ‘tek it to dem, again and again’. Always work as a team, as a UNITED house and you will always succeed.

We have been champions for years and we must continue to be champions. I will surely miss you all.

Washington House Report Calm, cool, cooperative and collective are only some of the words that describe the colour blue and these words exemplify the character of all the members of Washington House (the Washingtonians).

This year has been a very productive year for the Washingtonians. We were sidetracked last year by the other houses. However, this yea, due to commitment and dedication, we forgot our weaknesses and put our strengths together to propel Washington forward. Thanks to God, we came first in the cheerleading competition and second on sports day.

Thanks to all the members who participated in the cheerleading, the track and field events and those who cheered for us. A big thank you. We look forward for taking home the trophy in 2012.

A great partnership was then formed between Bonnie Hoy and Associates and Bethlehem Moravian College, thus, the Presidential Award for Character Development. This scholarship has enabled individuals with great financial challenges to continue on the road to success. It has transformed lives and created bright futures. Recipients do not have to worry about covering the fees but can focus on their programme of study. Administrators were very instrumental in getting this scholarship off the ground as they have first hand experience relating to the challenges of their clients.

What I like most about the Presidential Award for Character Development is that, in a few days after the interview you are able to know if you have been selected then this is followed by the awards ceremony.

Mrs. Bonnie Hoy and her company cannot loose and will never loose. Some over thirty (30) individuals have been blessed. It is the Lord’s doing and as such the company will only prosper.

Life on Campus Students at Bethlehem Moravian College were interviewed about their life at the college and how they were benefitting. Here is what they had to say: Amoy Williams: Living on campus is the aspect of college life which has impacted me most, as this helps me to be exposed in which I get the opportunity to interact with individuals from different parts of Jamaica and the knowledge of how they were socialized. Living on campus also helped me to become a more responsible young woman as I am accountable for my own actions since I have no parental guidance at school.

Tamika Reid: Having the use of the library and computer labs on campus helps students a lot academically. The use of these facilities in the evenings enhances our ability to a wide spread of resources and knowledge which will eventually save our time, money and heighten our academic performance as the information gained will help in exams and answering questions in the classroom setting.

Ann-Sherie Ritchie: I believe that living on campus provides students with the opportunity to seek additional academic help from peers. Although it may be challenging at times since we may live with people who posseses different personalities, life on campus provides the space for us to grow into well -rounded individuals.

Shaneika Watson: The environment here on campus helps you to relax and thus you will be more focused when studying and when you are in class.

Horatio Tomlinson: Life on campus helps me to work more efficiently a part of a team which will help as I enter the world of teaching which will open the door to numerous team work opportunities.

Shanika Roye: Life on campus for me has helped in my social interactions with people I meet and learn the way of life of the students I meet. Living on campus has taught me to be more responsible and independent.

Princess Wright: Communal living has helped me to develop a better way of self-control. Campus life helps me to work as a team with others as I work along with my classmates when given tasks to complete.

Ryan Myles: Life on campus is fun especially because I am surrounded by the ladies. The staff is friendly to me and helps a lot when I am in need of help. The campus environment is also conducive to learning and has the resources which help when completing assignments.

Yanique Johnson: Life on campus helps me to save money, get help with any aspect of my school work which I am unable to understand and it helps as resources are available for use when given assignments.

I Like You The note reads: “For me to accept this bottle you need to have a Mercedes in your garage, a million in the bank and nine inches in your trousers.”

A Jamaican man enters a restaurant, and while sitting at his table he notices a gorgeous woman sitting at another table alone. He calls the waiter over and asks for a bottle of the most expensive champagne to be sent over to her, knowing that if she accepts it she will be his.

After reading her note the Jamaican sends back another. It says: “Jus su yuh know, me av a bran new Benz an a bran new Bimma park up inna mi yard, an mi av over 10 million inna de bank, but nuh baddy, an mi mean NUH BADDY, nah goh mek mi cut three inch off a wah mi av inna mi pants, suh yuh can jus sen back  di champagne!”

The waiter gets the bottle and quickly takes it over to the young woman, saying that it’s from the gentleman.

She looks at the champagne and decides to send a note back to the Jamaican.

The Last Gizzarda





An elderly Jamaican man lay dying in his bed. While suffering the agonies of impending death, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favourite Jamaican pastry, gizzada, wafting up the stairs. He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed.

Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort, gripping the railing with both hands, he crawled downstairs.

With laboured breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death’s agony, he would have thought himself already in Heaven, for there, spread out upon waxed paper on the kitchen table were literally dozens of gizzada.

Was it Heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife of 60 years, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man? Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself towards the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture. His parched lips parted, the wondrous taste of the gizzada was already in his mouth, seemingly bringing him back to life.

His aged and withered hand trembled on its way to a gizzada at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked with a Dutch pot by his wife. “Move yu backside!” she said, “Dem ya a fe you funeral!”



The Jamaican Balance Once upon a time in the kingdom of Heaven, God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael, the archangel, found him, resting on the seventh day.

He inquired of God. “Where have you been?” God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction, and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, and said, “Look, Michael. Look what I’ve made!”

Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, “What is it?”

“It’s a planet,” replied God, “and I’ve put life on it. I’m going to call it Earth and it’s going to be a great place of balance.”

“Balance?” inquired Michael, still confused.

God explained, pointing to different parts of Earth.

“For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, while southern Europe is going to be poor. Over there I’ve placed a continent of white people, and over there is a continent of black people,” God continued pointing to different places. “This one will be extremely hot, while this one will be very cold

andcovered in ice.”

The archangel, impressed by God’s work, then pointed to a land mass in the Caribbean and said, “What’s that one?”

“Ah,” said God. “That’s Jamaica, the most glorious place on Earth. There are beautiful beaches, blue mountains, streams, hills, and waterfalls. The people from Jamaica are going to be very handsome, modest, intelligent and humorous, and they are going to be found travelling the world holding good jobs. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking and highachieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace, play football and go to the Winter Olympics.”

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration, but then proclaimed, “What about balance, God? You said there would be balance!”

God replied wisely, “Wait until you see the idiots that run their government.”

Sheila The Horse One night, a man was relaxing watching TV when out of the kitchen comes his wife with a pan.

So the wife apologized, kissed his headback, and went back to her chores.

“BOOF!”

Fifteen minutes later, the wife storms out of the kitchen again.

“A who name Shiela?” asked the wife, “Mi si dis ya paypa eena yuh pocket wid di nayme Shiela pon it, who is she?”

The man, rubbing his headback, said, “Me and Richie did dung ah di racetrack tiddeh an dat is di nayme of di horse weh we bet pan, a wah duh yuh!?!

High school had a policy that the parents must call the school if a student was to be absent for the day. Kelly, deciding to skip school and go to the mall with her friends, waited until her parents had left for work and called the school herself. This is the actual telephone conversation call: Kelly: “Hi, I’m calling to report that Kelly so-and-so is unable to make it to school today because she is ill.”

Secretary at high school: “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. I’ll note her absence. Who is this calling?”

Kelly: “This is my mother.”
