“The American people have this lesson to learn: That where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither persons or property will be safe.” — Frederick Douglass Normally, during this letter, we pause to look back at the successes of 2019—and those incredible impact numbers will be shared with you during this report and later in this letter, but we can’t address the past without discussing the present. Over the past few months of 2020, we have seen tremendous difficulties in our communities, beginning with the COVID-19 pandemic. CHRIS 180 has continued to live out our mission of healing children, strengthening families and building community throughout this public health crisis by stepping up as mental health first responders. For months, our staff served thousands with emergency relief services including food distributions, well-checks, housing and behavioral health services like telehealth for those in our communities who have been hit the hardest by this difficult time. In fact, CHRIS 180 prioritized addressing this crisis, delaying production of this publication.

CHRIS 180 Leadership Team 2020 Kathy Colbenson, MA, LMFT President & Chief Executive Officer Cindy Simpson, MA & Ed.S. VP & Chief Operating Officer Sheila Katz Cohen, CPA Chief Financial Officer

And as the uprising over racial injustices against the Black community came to the forefront this year, we’ve continued to take a stand against racism and to acknowledge and address the trauma that it brings. CHRIS 180’s board and staff are committed to learn from each other’s lived experiences so we can help our clients learn how to advocate for themselves and each other. We look at ourselves, our experiences and our implicit bias. We seek to learn from each other. There is not one single solution to this problem which has plagued our country from its beginning. We are committed to being role models and advocates so that we can help change society at large.

Kevin Clift Chief Development Officer

As we look ahead, we are very grateful to reflect on the things that brought CHRIS 180 tremendous opportunities to help more children, adults and families. To culminate the end of the Turning Point Capital Campaign, we were able to move into our Center of Excellence for Training, Education and Connections in 2019. And in just a year, we’ve trained over 3,000 people in traumainformed care, therapeutic best practice and fostered resiliency. We also opened an Integrated Health Clinic in partnership with Mercy Care, which offers primary and behavioral healthcare in a neighborhood with few other resources. Your generosity in our capital campaign allowed CHRIS 180 to renovate three homes and build a duplex for youth in foster care and families at risk of their children being placed into foster care and much more.

Emily Thompson VP Community Programs

Additionally, 2019 saw the opening of the Westside Empowerment Center, which connects adults to therapy, health care and resources on Atlanta’s Westside. We strengthened families and grew our impact through Healing Circles and Trauma Response Networks for neighborhood residents in Atlanta Police Department’s Zone 3 - the area of Atlanta with the highest rates of violent crime - to empower residents to reclaim their home after tragedy. We have come so far with the support of you, our partners, donors and supporters of CHRIS 180. But as we all know, the need is great and worsened by the pandemic. The storm, for the families we serve, will exist long after these crises are no longer on the news. Our question to you is: how will you help CHRIS 180 reach the most vulnerable? We need your thoughts to turn into actions to help us ensure that the clients we serve can live more resilient, productive lives. We can’t do it without you.

Chaundra Luckett Chief Marketing Officer Queie Barnett, SPHR, SHRM-SCP Director, Human Resources Monica McGannon, MSW, LCSW VP Training

At The CHRIStal Ball 2019, attendees heard the story of Sir Dalvin, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 19. After growing up in a supportive family and beginning his college education, Sir found himself grappling with the fear that he wouldn’t be able to live a normal life. He shared, “I was losing my grasp on reality quickly.” After a severe breakdown, Sir was placed in a psychiatric hospital, where a mentor told him about CHRIS 180. He moved into Summit Trail Apartments, where he connected with “a life coach, therapist, medical staff who knew me and my medication. It was scary and overwhelming and difficult to trust that it would not disappear in a flash. Slowly, I felt more at ease. And the refrain in my head changed to: ‘You can do this.’” Today, Sir is back in college, finding joy in his hobbies, and preparing for an independent life.

Jared started getting help from a CHRIS 180 therapist at age 12. He had experienced significant trauma that shattered his self-esteem and believed his trauma was his fault. When he first came to CHRIS 180, he couldn’t trust anyone, he had intense anger outbursts that caused danger to himself and others, and he had thoughts about suicide. At school, he was suspended many times and was eventually transferred to an alternative school. It was clear that he needed help. Jared and his therapist worked to build his self-worth, help him learn coping skills, and developed ways for him to build trust to help his relationships. Now Jared knows how to inform teachers when he needs a break. He engages in mindfulness activities when he feels himself getting upset, he has built relationships with people at school who he trusts, and he feels more confident. Best of all, Jared knows the truth that his past trauma was not his fault and he is free from suicidal thoughts. He is moving forward.

“I don’t know what we would have done without the CHRIS 180 wraparound team. They have helped bring out in Luke the loveable person that he is, and he fits right into our loving family.”

66

When CHRIS 180's wraparound team first started working with Luke and his foster family, we were not sure if we would be able to help him stay in his family and community. Luke had multiple psychiatric hospitalizations and had been in more than seven different homes during his short time in foster care. His foster family was interested in adopting Luke but they needed help to be confident that they could manage his behaviors. Luke was constantly engaging in high risk behaviors and putting himself in harm’s way. His foster family worked tirelessly with CHRIS 180's wraparound team to find strategies that would strengthen their family and be supportive of Luke. Luke and his family learned how they could help Luke manage and appropriately express his feelings when he became overwhelmed. Working together, they built individual and family resiliency. Six months later, Luke knows that he has found his forever family as they move toward adoption finalization. Luke and his soonto-be adoptive parents are thrilled.

CHRIS 180 announced the opening of the new Westside Empowerment Center in 2019 with a cookout and open house to welcome the community. More than 300 people attended the open house, including residents who needed services right away. As soon as the doors were open, an older gentleman entered and was greeted by COO Cindy Simpson, who said to him, “You don’t look like you feel too good,’ and he said, ‘Yeah, I feel terrible.’ Come to find out that he’s a diabetic, his blood sugar was already above 800, and he told us he had just had his big toe amputated a week and a half ago. So right away, we called someone and got him a ride to Grady.” According to Simpson, service like this is a part of what makes this center special: putting primary health care and behavioral health care for adults together directly in the neighborhood where it’s needed. 77

Building Resiliency

With a teenage son battling substance use and depresssion, we had tried several counseling options and were extremely frustrated and discouraged. The TREE House Program at CHRIS 180 gave us hope to save our son. It was the first program we found that was equipped to handle both parts of his illness while working with our entire family to create healthy boundaries and productive communication. The team of experts assigned to us was a remarkable collection of compassionate professionals equipped to teach our family about addiction, monitor and conquer depression, and identify and resolve the issues that triggered the illness. Our son had peer group education, individual counseling, a case manager, a peer counselor, and a psychiatrist while family support groups and family counseling sessions were available to all of us. It was this team approach at TREE House that provided treatment for the whole family that made the difference for us.

“Mrs. Jones,” mom to two young boys, is a regular at CHRIS Counseling Center – Gwinnett. In the summer of 2019, she was invited to get a book bag for each of her two children, made possible through one of our back-to-school drive donors. When she saw each son could get their own book bag AND that they were full of school supplies, she began to cry. She could not thank staff enough for the help. When she had stopped crying, she said quietly, “Now that I don’t have to buy book bags,

10

I can afford to get Tommy a lunch box.” Please know, we put everything our donors give us to good use, and your kindness changes lives.
