WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Chautauqua is a Seneca word –most commonly translated as “bag tied in the middle” or “two moccasins tiedtogether”–andusedtodescribe the shape of its namesake lake. Historically, it refers to an adult education movement in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the Chautauqua Institution, where the movement began. Chautauqua is also Western New York’s largest inland lake and western-most county. Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was quotedassayingthatChautauquais “themostAmericanthinginAmerica.” In 1974, author Robert M. Persig used the term as a philosophical journey in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Today, Chautauqua is renowned as a place for nurturing the mind, body, and spirit – a wellrounded, balanced lifestyle.
