PROJECT OBJECTIVES
Three priorities for a safer, more resilient Kaneville A coordinated upgrade focused on movement, drainage resilience and community quality.
SAFER MOVEMENT Targeted road repairs, walkways and street lighting.
EFFICIENT DRAINAGE 7.3 km of new drains plus culvert and bridge works.
BETTER PUBLIC REALM Tree planting and clearer community signage.
One coordinated programme • Three visible outcomes
SECTION 02
What this means for your property The road reserve, what has to be moved, private bridges and culverts, and how access will be managed while the work is underway. P L E AS E R AI S E AN Y C O N C E R N I N T H I S S E C T I O N T O N I G H T
THE ROAD RESERVE EXPLAINED WHY WORK MAY EXTEND BEYOND THE EDGE OF THE EXISTING ROAD
What the reserve is •
The road reserve is the full strip of public land between property boundary lines — not just the paved surface you drive on.
•
It normally includes the shoulders, the verge, the drain and the space where utility poles stand.
•
Drains, walkways and shoulders are built inside this reserve.
•
The reserve is public land. It is not part of the house lot, even where it has been in private use for many years.
What this means in practice •
The works will use the full reserve available from the property boundary line.
•
Anything standing in the reserve will need to be moved before construction reaches that street.
•
Buildings and fences on private land are retained — the concept designs are drawn to keep them in place.
•
Where the reserve is narrow, the design is adjusted rather than the boundary moved.
If you are unsure where your boundary line falls, ask at the desk tonight and it can be checked against the survey.
WHAT WILL NEED TO BE MOVED ENCUMBRANCES IDENTIFIED ON THE RESERVE DURING THE FIELD ASSESSMENT
During the assessment, a number of items were recorded standing on the road reserve. These will need to be cleared before construction reaches that street.
Derelict and parked vehicles
Building materials
Vehicles standing on the shoulder or verge, including vehicles under repair.
Sand, stone, blocks and lumber stored on the shoulder outside the property line.
Commercial activity on the reserve
Heavy equipment
Wash bays, mechanic and body-work areas, snackettes and stalls set up on the shoulder.
Machinery and trailers parked on the shoulder where drains and walkways are to be built.
Notice will be given before anything is moved Residents and businesses will be contacted ahead of works on their street so items can be relocated onto private land. Where owners cannot be identified, items will be removed and disposed of. If something of yours is on the reserve, please speak to us tonight rather than waiting for the machines.
PRIVATE BRIDGES, CULVERTS AND APPROACHES THE PART OF THE WORK THAT TOUCHES EVERY HOUSE
Phase 2 includes residential approaches. Every driveway bridge over the roadside drain is affected.
Why private bridges matter •
• •
The NDC consultation linked flooding in Kaneville to failed culverts and to privately built drains laid at the wrong invert level. A bridge or culvert set too high or too low blocks the flow for everyone upstream, not only that property. Rebuilding approaches to a common level is what makes the new drainage actually work.
What happens at your gap •
Existing approaches will be assessed, then rebuilt to match the new drain level.
•
Temporary access will be maintained while the approach is out — see the next slide.
•
Where an approach was privately built to a different standard, it will be reset to the design level.
•
If you have already paid for a bridge recently, tell us tonight so it can be recorded.

DRAIN AGE PROGRAM M E
The largest single part of the programme •
Earthen roadside drains are replaced with reinforced concrete drains.
•
Drains are covered with concrete slabs with side inlet openings, so water still enters.
•
Where the design allows, those covers double as a walkway.
•
Culverts and driveway approaches are rebuilt to a common level so the whole line drains.
The yellow lines on the map show where new drains are planned.

Ongoing contact
Your questions and objections are recorded at this meeting, street by street.
Comments are reviewed against the design. Where a concern affects the layout, the design is adjusted.
Residents and businesses with items on the reserve are contacted directly, with time to move them.
Preliminary utility works start first, then desilting and shoulder clearance, then drains.
A point of contact stays available for the duration of the works.
Nothing on your property is touched without notice. If in doubt, ask.
