Ha w k Pr i d e The Alma Mater Melody The source of Chowan?s Alma Mater melody is unknown. One of its first uses was as a fraternity song, associated with the Fraternity, Theta Psi. Its first application as a school song was probably at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Cornell is on the banks of Lake Cayuga, and appropriately enough, the song began ?Far above Cayuga?s waters. . .? Since its adoption by Cornell, it has been used by countless other schools, the most familiar in North Carolina being the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Chowan University has always been a school with music. In 1890, Anne Abernathy, one of the students, wrote the lyrics to Chowan?s Alma Mater, which has continued to be ?Alma Mater? through the succeeding years.

LOSt Tr a d i t i o n s Blue and White Beanies In 1969, Chowan adopted a dress code that required all freshmen to wear a blue and white beanie for the first three weeks of the academic year, a period in which they were designated as Rats. Freshmen who violated the policy were summoned to Rat Court. The tradition of Rats, which was a form of hazing composed of assorted activities to include Rat Day and King and Queen of Rats, began in the 1920s and continued into the early 1970s.

Mandatory Chapel From the beginning, Chowan featured mandatory daily religious exercises. Mandatory chapel/assembly maintained a presence on campus until the early 1990s. In 2006, mandatory attendance returned with Perspectives, which focused on the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual development of students beyond the classroom. Today, there are no mandatory chapel services, although there are faith services and Bible studies held throughout the week.

The Chowanoka Chowan published its first yearbook, Alaska Nuggets, in 1911. The edition contained descriptions of students, photos of faculty, class prophecies, poems, student photos, organizations, athletic teams, and more. Later editions were renamed The Chowanoka, with publication dates ranging from 1913 to 2006. The annual grew 8 to include all aspects of academic, student, athletic, and

religious life on campus.

Squirrel Park Swings The swings in Squirrel Park were once a staple at Chowan. The swings would be used as a relaxing activity for students after a long day of classes. Students used to sit on the swings to read, study, listen to music, and more. As storms damaged the trees over the years, the swings decreased in number.

May Day By the 1930s, May Day was revered by Chowan students as the ultimate celebration of spring. Each year, a festival was held on or near May 1. The crowning of the May Queen, announcing of her court, and dancing around the maypole were key elements of the day. The May Queen was elected by the student body, chosen for her kindness, beauty, and social status. The inspiration for the celebration was the English festive culture of Elizabethan times. In the 1960s, the Chowan May Queen became the Queen of Spring, which was then phased out as an annual tradition by the 1970s.

The Braves In a meeting of the Chowan football team on November 2, 1949, the players selected Braves as Chowan's nickname for all athletic teams. The name paid tribute to the Chowanoc Tribe. Other names considered were Chiefs and Warriors. In 2006, after the NCAA banned nicknames and mascots deemed offensive to Native American culture, Chowan adopted Hawks as its nickname.

The leg end of the Brow n La d y, in its severa l versions, is the m ost w ell- know n tra d ition a t Chow a n. One a ccount sa ys she d ied of typ hoid fever. Another contend s she succ um b ed to a b roken hea rt. A third c la im s she jum p ed to her d ea th from the fourth floor of the Colum ns. All a g ree her yea rly visit to the ca m p us is sig na led b y the 35 d istinct rustling of her silk ta ffeta d ress.
