Mack L. Thompson Class of 1964 Raleigh, NC native Mack L. Thompson is an alumnus of Chowan University, receiving his Associate in Arts in 1964. Prior to Chowan, he graduated from Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966 from Campbell University, a Master of Divinity in 1969 from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Doctor of Ministry in 1973 from Southeastern, and in 1972 completed the NC Baptist Hospital School of Pastoral Care/Clinical Pastoral Education.

Known as an outstanding leader in the Baptist denomination, Dr. Thompson held pastorates in North Carolina Baptist Churches including Wakeminister Baptist Church, Warrenton Baptist Church, Warsaw Baptist Church, First Baptist Church in Laurinburg, NC, and Ridge Road Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. At Chowan University Dr. Thompson was President of the National Alumni Association and a member of the Board of Trustees, and at Campbell University he was President of the Board of Ministers. Thompson also served on the Board of Trustees for both NC Baptist Retirement Homes and Meredith College. He served as Moderator for the Eastern Baptist Association, Moderator of the Chair, Meetings and

Plans Committee for the Raleigh Baptist Association, and on the NC Baptist State Convention’s Trustee Orientation Committee and Memorials Committee.

Currently, Dr. Thompson is a member of Chowan University’s Board of Visitors and Board of Ministers. He is also a member of Campbell University’s Board of Ministers.

The recognitions and honors which Dr. Thompson has received include: Stealey Church History Award, Southeastern Seminary, 1969; Outstanding Young Men of America, 1971; Named a Reavis Scholar by Campbell University, 1995; Raleigh Baptist Association Annual Dedication, 2008; December 7, 2008 declared Dr. L. Mack Thompson Day in the City of Raleigh, NC; Sermon published in Elevating Preaching 2010: A Collection of Elevating Sermons from North Carolina Baptist Preachers, Tony Cartledge, Editor.

Dr. Thompson has been married to Carol Corbitt Thompson, a Chowan alumna since 1965. They have two grown children, Todd Mack Thompson, who attended Chowan from 1987-89, Clair Thompson Dunford, and four grandchildren.

Milton A. Outten Class of 1971

Milton A. (Mick) Outten graduated from Chowan College in 1971.

He was a two-year letterman in Varsity Football. He received a BS degree from the College of William and Mary in 1974, and began his naval career upon graduation from Officer Candidate School in 1976.

He received his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in 1982, graduated from the Advanced Program Management Course of the Defense Systems Management College in 1988, and completed a Masters Degree in Systems Engineering from the Whiting School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins University in 2003.

STANDARD Missile Program Office and in 2002 assumed duties as STANDARD Missile Program Manager. In 2003 he became Director, Missiles and Surface Launchers for PEO Theater Surface Combatants and served in this capacity until his retirement from the United States Navy in 2005. Captain Outten’s personal decorations include two Legions of Merit, four Meritorious Service Medals, five Navy Commendation Medals, A Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.

Captain Outten served numerous tours at sea including on USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67) where he was designated as a Surface Warfare Officer. He later served as Chief Engineer on USS RICHARD E. BYRD (DDG 23) and USS BIDDLE (CG 34). In 1989 he reported as Executive Officer of USS PREBLE (DDG 46), and later as Chief of Staff for COMMANDER, DESTROYER SQUADRON TWENTYSIX. In 1994, Captain Outten, assumed command of USS PETERSON (DD-969).

In 2006, Captain Outten joined the Integrated Defense Systems division of Raytheon Corporation as a Systems Engineer. He has served in various capacities with Raytheon and is currently the Technical Director for the Zumwalt Class Guided Missile Destroyer, DDG 1000 – The Navy’s next generation warship.

Ashore, Captain Outten served two tours on staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon. In 2000 he became the Systems Engineer and Technical Director for the

Mick married Carol M. Owen of Ashland, Virginia, where they are both active in their community and church, First Baptist Church of Ashland. Mick is a Bible study teacher, and a former chair of the Personnel Committee and the Deacon Body. The Outtens have two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah, and a granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth.

Jenáy Nelson Class of 2012

Jenáy Nelson was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia and graduated from the International Baccalaureate Program at Henrico High School.

She was awarded a tennis scholarship, Leadership Scholarship, and Alumni Scholarship to attend Chowan, majoring in Business Administration with an Accounting Concentration and a Management minor.

Jenáy was named Homecoming Queen, Miss Chowan University 2011-2012 and 2nd Runner-up for Miss CIAA 2012. She was the first to place in the school’s history with the Miss CIAA Pageant.

Academically, she was on the President’s List, a Leadership Scholar, received the Benjamin Conrad Sutton, Sr. Award for Business Leadership, and was inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society. Jenáy was a Student of the Month for the School of Business and was nominated for Who’s Who among Colleges and Universities. Furthermore, she received the Order of the Silver Feather, the highest service award given by Chowan University.

She was a Peer Mentor, member of the Phi Beta Lambda Business Club, soprano in Chowan Singers and the

Instruments of Praise Gospel Choir, member of the International Students Club, the Women’s Tennis team (Captain her senior year), and the team’s representative for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Jenáy served as Financial Secretary for the Upsilon Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. As a Delta, she participated in many community service projects and events, volunteering for the Food Bank and Flood Relief, as well as Adopt-a-Highway.

Jenáy was selected as the graduation speaker at commencement in 2012. She worked as an admissions counselor at Chowan University, then a teller at Southern Bank. Jenáy attended the Culinary Institute of Virginia in Norfolk, where she received her Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts in July 2016.

Jenáy is an active member of the Chowan Alumni Council and the Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. She resides in Murfreesboro and is the Accounting Clerk for Rivers Correctional Institution in Winton, NC. CU Today | Fall/Winter 2016 5

Wayland L. Jenkins, Jr. Wayland L. Jenkins, Jr. is a native of Aulander, North Carolina and graduate of Wake Forest College (University). Following service in the US Army, Mr. Jenkins returned home to work in various family businesses with his brother, Joseph Henry Jenkins.

In 1964, the brothers formed Jenkins Investments, a partnership devoted to management of rental properties, farm and forest interests, and financial investments. Jenkins was an integral part of historic preservation in the RoanokeChowan area, specifically Hope Plantation and Historic Murfreesboro.

In 1999, he was instrumental in organizing and funding the Bertie/Hertford affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation. His interests are broad and many charitable causes continue to benefit from his generosity.

Mr. Jenkins has spent a lifetime collecting art representing a variety of mediums. Having maintained homes in North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida, his collection features a number of prominent artists from those states.

In 2012, the Wayland L. Jenkins, Jr. Fine Arts Center was established on the Chowan University campus. The Center

boasts a permanent collection consisting of almost ninety original works of art and more than seven noteworthy pieces of furniture. The Center represents Mr. Jenkins’ talent as a collector. Artists including Hobson Pittman, Edward Potthast, and Joseph Blackburn are featured in the gallery.

The Center offers students and visitors a unique opportunity to gain insight and appreciation of the “art” of collecting.

Mr. Jenkins has also provided furniture and furnishings to enhance the Camp President’s Home including Cartier china, hand wrought Old Newberry Crafters silver flatware and Baccarat crystal.

Mr. Jenkins has close ties to Chowan University. The Olivia Benthall Jenkins residence hall is named for his grandmother who attended the Chowan Baptist Female Institute (Chowan University). She was also a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. His uncles Charles H. Jenkins and Herbert Jenkins both served on the Board of Trustees as did his cousin, Herbert Jenkins, Jr.

He Never Failes his students. His power is so great, in fact, that an anonymous former student established the Garth D. Faile Science Scholarship Endowment Fund in his honor, so that his name and his legacy will continue at Chowan, changing students’ lives one at a time as he has always done, and bringing great joy to the entire Chowan family.

It’s not uncommon for memories of college days to make a person smile. Yet one question unfailingly produces a specific quality of delight and awe: Do you remember Dr. Garth Faile?

Eyes light up. Grins ignite into laughter. Stories come tumbling out.

Over his 45 years of service to the University, Dr. Faile left many deep impressions in the academics and structure of the University itself. But his most powerful influence is clearly displayed by the lives of

My alma mater is a small, private, liberal arts institution in upstate New York. May I say (without getting in too much trouble) that the academic spaces in Camp Hall are not exactly what a job candidate might think of when she imagines a small, private, liberal arts university in northeastern North Carolina? Dr. Faile opened

every door and every closet. And if you are thinking about the current Camp Hall, please remember, my tour came before we did our “cleanout” to become EPA compliant. Believe it or not, the building was infinitely more alarming than it is today.

To be fair, Dr. Faile is also one of the reasons that I have stayed at Chowan.

Dr. Wethington, Dr. Dilustro and I were hired at the same time, which resulted in an almost complete turnover of the biologists in the department. Dr. Faile had been

teaching at Chowan for about 35 years and had recently stepped down as Chair. I imagine it can be hard when new faculty members like us – oblivious to the natural order of things – start rummaging around and changing everything as soon as we hit campus. If it was hard on Dr. Faile, he kept it to himself. Rather than resist change, he embraced it. He was never anything but warm and welcoming.

On several occasions during that first year, when I passed Dr. Faile in the hallway he would stop, with a CU Today | Fall/Winter 2016 7

big Garth Faile grin on his face, and say something like, “I am so pleased that you are here.” A small gesture perhaps... and I don’t think I have ever told him, but it meant a lot to me.

Years later, when I became Chair of the department, Dr. Faile was (and continues to be) very supportive. He offered advice without being intrusive and refrained from being critical when I made mistakes. I have told him this before. I appreciate his support, his counsel and his tact.

Our department was conducting faculty searches last semester. There is a point in every faculty search where the candidate inquires about the tenure process. We explain the timeline; we talk about peer evaluations, student evaluations, self-evaluations, and Chair evaluations. We talk about scholarship and service. We define the scholarship of teaching, the scholarship of application, the scholarship of discovery, and the scholarship of integration.

Trying very hard to look like he or she gets it, the candidate nonetheless – firmly entrenched in a traditional concept of the tenure and promotion

process at a research institution – says something like, “OK. ...I see. ...So, what do you have to do to get tenure?”

We regroup.

Sure, sure. We want you to remain professionally active. Yes. We want you to find ways to serve the university and the community. But our priority (and your priority) is teaching. We want you to pour your energy into the classroom.

We want you to work every day to become a better teacher. We want you to be there for your students and do what is in their long-term best interest.

I have found myself saying this next statement several times in the last few months, and Dr. Faile is my role model here, “We who fully embrace the mission of this university know that we are not here to work on our own careers. We are here to work on the careers of our students.”

Dr. Faile, more than anyone I know (more than anyone I have ever known) personifies this model of a selfless educator. There can be no doubt in anyone’s mind that Dr. Faile’s greatest professional achievement has been in the classroom. He does not chase after

long lists of accomplishments to pad his annual evaluations. He knows what is important. His priority is always in the classroom with our students – right where it should be.

Dr. Faile’s legacy is a living one. It is the lives of the young men and women who have been lucky enough to find themselves in his classroom.

There is no shortage of graduates from our program who will tell you that Dr. Faile saved their lives – not only because of the education they received, but also because Dr. Faile believed in them when they did not believe in themselves.

More often than not, when alumni who have built successful careers in the sciences return to campus, they attribute much of their success to Dr. Faile. I spoke with an alumnus once who drew a direct line between her experiences in Dr. Faile’s classroom and her ability to provide a better life for herself and for her daughter – better than the life she had as a child.

There are times when my job seems like a heavy burden. I pour my energy into the classroom, hoping that my efforts will somehow contribute to a better life

for one of my students. Why can’t I get them to read? Why can’t I get them to follow instructions? Will I be able to keep my composure when the next student hands me an assignment that looks like it has been riding around on a school bus for a week in the bottom of a fifth grader’s lunch pail? Why don’t they seem to care? What am I doing wrong?

After 45 years at Chowan University, Dr. Faile’s enthusiasm for teaching is undiminished. When I feel mine waning, I wander upstairs. I see Dr. Faile sitting in a classroom beside a student. She is sitting in the chair she sits in every day. She is at ease because Dr. Faile was thoughtful enough to conduct business on her turf. He is patiently guiding her through a problem (for what must be at least the thousandth time in his career). I am renewed.

Dr. Faile, Your career has been a gift to this university. You are an outstanding educator, mentor, and colleague. You are adored by our alumni, your current students, and your colleagues. I am impressed with, and humbled by,

your service to this university and its students. Members of the Department of Biology would like you to know that you have enriched our lives immeasurably. We are better people and better educators for having known and worked beside you. It is an honor to be the one who gets to stand up here today and thank you, on behalf of the entire Chowan community, for your extraordinary contribution to the life of this university.

Garth D. Faile was born in Salitpa, AL and graduated from the Coffeeville High School. He earned the B.S. from the University of Alabama, the M.A.T. from the University of Montevallo, and the M.S. and Ph.D. from Auburn University. He joined the Chowan faculty in 1971 as professor and chair of the Department of Science. He served as department chair for many years. He retired as Distinguished Professor of Chemistry in 2016.

He and his wife Erin were married in 1963 and have two daughters, Yolanda Faile Pataky and Leah Faile Barrett. Yolanda graduated from Chowan in 1989. The Failes are active members of Murfreesboro Baptist Church where he has served on the board of deacons, Sunday School teacher for the college students and as Church Clerk. He has been a supporter of local libraries, having served on the boards of the Elizabeth Sewell Library in Murfreesboro and the Albemarle Regional Library in Winton.

Natural Born Teacher — Student Spotlight: Trevor Marshall

“Chowan greatly changed my life,” says Trevor Marshall. “I was blessed with experiences that have helped me mature and opportunities I wouldn’t have found anywhere else. I went to England and Scotland on a scholarship and I was able to lead in organizations that will improve my outcome and standing in the professional world after I graduate. “The senior from Middlesex, NC is an elementary education major. He is also President of the Honors College, a member of Alpha Chi and Kappa Delta Pi honor societies, a Presidential Ambassador, and a student representative of the Teacher Executive Committee—where teachers and superintendents within the area come together with students and other educators.

Trevor spent most of the summer working one on one with students needing special education through Durham-based Arc of the Triangle, an organization which supports children and adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities in the achievement of their personal goals and dreams in the community through partnership and advocacy. Trevor has big goals and dreams of his own.

Trevor Marshall was 17 when he graduated high school and started at Chowan University. “I don’t even recognize myself anymore, I’ve changed so much,” he says. “I looked like a boy, like a little kid.”

Many things have changed since then. “The Trevor in high school was not the same Trevor you know at Chowan.” The bright and engaging President of the Honors College says he got the “sleepyhead” award in high school and was “one of

those kids who never learns how to study because I never had to try in school.”

“I never envisioned myself being the President of anything or being an Ambassador for the school, or winning scholastic awards.”

One thing that hasn’t changed? His love for young people.

“I’ve always had a special knack for working with children,” he says, “Whether it was buddy ball with children that have

special needs, volunteer coaching youth soccer, or just taking care of my younger siblings.”

He has also always been a fighter. “I come from a family of four children with a single mom who does not make much more than ten dollars an hour,” he says. “I have no one to fall back on when it comes to my financial security.”

Trevor couldn’t believe it. “Those kinds of things don’t happen to people like me,” he says. “Good things like that don’t happen where I come from.” Sure enough, Trevor found

His “fight” is what propelled him to Chowan. “If college hadn’t worked out, I would be in the military right now. I didn’t see any other options,” he says. “College found me.”

He caught the eye of Chowan’s soccer coach at a game “where I lost!” He says “We got murdered, but the coach said he really liked my fight. I was good, technically, but more than anything else I was a fighter.”

Soccer offered financial assistance that suddenly made college a possibility, but a few weeks into his freshman year he found himself miserable. Soccer wasn’t working out the way he expected and he was questioning his commitment to staying here. “That’s about the time that Dr. Moore pulled me aside after class,” he says. “I thought I was in trouble, but instead he asked me if I had heard about the England trip.” Trevor had heard about it, but finances making the trip an impossibility for him, he hadn’t given it much though. “He kept asking me if I wanted to go, and I kept telling him there was no way, I couldn’t afford it.” Finally, Dr. Moore explained. “He and his wife were planning on scholarshipping one student to go on the trip. He was offering it to me.”

He began pursuing a future as a teacher. That choice hasn’t been easy and has required a great deal of sacrifice. “Most of my money goes to paying people for transportation to and from different schools for fieldwork and observations, since most of the schools are at least a 30-minute drive away. I love soccer, but I quit playing so that I could study and work during the times that I normally would have practices.”

When it comes to work, he does anything and everything he can find, up to and including working four jobs this summer.

“I want to do something that can change lives,” he says. “I grew up poor. I grew up with food banks, eviction notices.

There were days that the only thing I ate were the free meals at school.”

“That’s one of the reasons I really want to go into teaching. I want to give back, I want to help others the way others have helped me, especially Dr. Moore and Mrs. Wolfskill. They have easily been the greatest influences in my life.”

“I have friendships with faculty, not just professional relationships,” he says. “They truly care about me and what happens in my future. Chowan has greatly changed my life.”

In His Element

— Alumni Spotlight: Todd Wright ’84

To watch Todd Wright work is to see a man in his element. He moves with ease and precision, carrying himself with a quiet, selfcontained confidence. As he leans over the rail of a lift raised to ceiling height in the Bynum R. Brown Aquatic Center he is utterly focused on the relentless pursuit of the perfect shot. It’s easy to see how the same fierce determination would have been displayed on the court during his time at Chowan.

A native of Chesapeake, VA, Todd graduated from Great Bridge High School and enrolled at Chowan University in 1982. Continuing the lineage passed down from his father, a multiple All-State Basketball player from Newport News, VA who went on to play for Elon University, Wright played for Coach Burke’s Men’s Basketball team during Chowan’s best athletic years.

Famed among Chowan athletics fans for his buzzer shot that sent the Men’s Basketball team into the Final Four of the Junior College National Championship, the shooting guard’s most powerful memories of Chowan are centered around the sport.

Adrenalin pumps as the clock runs down in Hutchinson, Kansas. “The ball ended up in my hands and I launched it,” Wright says. The crowd went wild launching Chowan into the Final Four for the first time in its history.

It’s a huge moment in Chowan history.

However, if you ask Todd Wright about the famous buzzer shot, he will smile and humbly admit that he vaguely remembers it and he has never seen it for himself. He has just recently been given

a DVD from Coach Burke with a copy of the pivotal moment. He promised to sit down soon with his wife and three children and see it.

Todd has been very busy for the past 20 plus years as a Commercial Photographer in Richmond, VA. He shoots photography and video for both regional and national clients. Todd has stamped his creativity on big name companies like Walmart, The Home Depot, UPS, Mentos, and TV Land. In spite of his talent putting him in high demand, he didn’t hesitate to answer the call of his alma mater in request of a cover shoot for CU Today magazine. In fact, he generously spent the better part of a day with us, teetering atop a threestory lift to capture the photo displayed on the cover of this edition.

He also let us tag along on a high profile advertising shoot in his Richmond, VA studio, where models flown in from New York posed with expensive athletic equipment.

Before directing some broadcast television spots and producing tons of still photography, Todd was a business major who didn’t completely know what he wanted to do. He says his family laughed about how many different jobs he had after graduating college.

Somewhere in all of his searching he ended up buying a camera.

“I loved visuals and figured I would give photography a shot. It is hard to believe that twenty years later this is what I am doing for a living. I just absolutely love it! I can’t imagine doing anything else. I get to be really creative and it gives me a lot of time to spend with my family when I am able to work from home. It is a busy business, but it’s awesome.”

Growing up, he always knew that he wanted to be in a creative field. Whether it was drawing, sculpting, or writing, he

found ways to express himself through art while off the court and outside of the classroom. “Those two things, business and art, have melded perfectly for me because the creative end needs the business end to be successful.”

Hard work is what Todd learned as a college athlete. “Coach Burke was rarely happy with a good performance because it wasn’t a great performance and he always knew there was more inside of you that you could give,” comments Wright. “I think running my own business, I have to have that same kind of attitude to never quit and always push to do a little bit better.”

That determination is on full display the day of our cover shoot at the Aquatic Center. Todd’s patience never seems to wane as he directs members of the Women’s Swim Team to perform various strokes through the water. We have some great shots, but he’s not satisfied yet. When the student-athletes assert that they’re happy to push half an hour past our initially allotted time,

Todd smiles and steps back on the lift.

Returning it to full height he calls down, “I just really think we can nail this!”

Since graduating, he has been back to visit the campus a couple of times and believes that Chowan University is a very important part of his past. “One thing that I remember from Chowan that jumps out at me was that it didn’t matter if you knew someone, if you were passing a person on campus, everyone always said hello to each other.”

Todd notes that the physical campus has changed drastically with new buildings and new faces, but the spirit of Chowan University is still the same as it was when he played ball 30 years prior.

“Chowan being in a small town and a small college was perfect for me. I had lots of attention from professors, I made great friends. I still keep in touch with my roommate from Freshman year.

There are several people that I went to school with 30 years ago that I am still active friends with, so I can’t imagine not having gone to Chowan.”

Dr. White Releases Yesterday: Love Songs of the 1960s CD entitled Yesterday: Love Songs of the 1960s. This musical collection is titled after a popular Beatles’ song that is not only featured on the CD, but also revives old memories, making it feel as if the 60s were only as far away as yesterday.

The decade of the 1960s was significant to Dr. White and wife, Linda Fleming, of Hartwell, GA. They both graduated from high school and college during this decade. He graduated from seminary while she taught school and they married in 1965.

They lived in Louisville, KY and Atlanta, GA, but it was the pop music of these years that defined their lives.

Dr. White shares unique piano interpretations of songs by Frank Sinatra, Frankie Valli, and Johnny Cash and theme songs from popular movies like

“The Fiddler on the Roof,” Romeo and Juliet,” Dr. Zhivago,” and “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.” The entire CD fashions a walk down memory lane, from photography of his wedding day to his classic 1957 Ford featured on the back cover. This CD is number fourteen in Dr. White’s growing collection.

Yesterday: Love Songs of the 1960s was recorded on the Steinway Grand Piano in the sanctuary of the Murfreesboro Baptist Church. All proceeds are given to the Chowan Christian Service Association for ministerial student scholarships and student mission trips.

Unprecedented Growth — Chowan’s Road Map to Transformation

Chowan University’s fall 2016 enrollment of 1,534 students is the largest in school history since returning to four-year status in 1992. It is the

ninth consecutive year of undergraduate student growth at Chowan. These statistics are the envy of many other colleges and universities. Under the leadership of President M. Christopher White, enrollment has grown 97 percent since 2003. All this at a time when many of our peer institutions are experiencing the opposite, and every day another storied school of higher learning seems to be shutting its doors.

In fact, Chowan University was recently named the 13th fastest-growing private nonprofit baccalaureate institution in the nation by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Chowan secured its place with a whopping 116 percent increase in student enrollment over the last decade, as noted by the Chronicle's annual Almanac of Higher Education released on August 14, 2016.

It’s not just enrollment numbers that are steadily rising. The physical campus is also expanding at an incredible rate. Just this semester Chowan opened five brand new buildings, and that doesn’t include substantial renovations projects to residence halls, academic, and athletic facilities. Academics at

Chowan University are also continuously advancing. The 2016 crop of new faculty boast degrees from such stories schools as Yale and Princeton, plus a wealth of teaching experience.

Academic support services apply fresh and creative approaches to engage students and encourage their success.

Freshman Writing Labs were introduced this year to help students hone the grammar skills that they learned in high school and apply them to their college writing. The modules are built on a gaming model to keep the students engaged and actively participating in the assignment. Meanwhile, Academic Success lures students with the promise of free food and provides a listening ear and solutions-driven counsel to help them achieve their goals.

Chowan University has approached growth as a two way street, working to bring more students into the institution while simultaneously investing in facilities and services that will equip them once they arrive. Jewell Faye Glover June 2, 1935 - April 5, 2016

The realm of Christian higher education in general, and Chowan University in particular, was left bereft of a genuinely devoted and highly respected friend by the death of Jewell Faye Glover, who departed this life on April 5, 2016, outside Seaboard, NC. For such a tiny woman -petite, diminutive of stature, humble of spirit -- Jewell Faye Glover had a titanic impact on Chowan University and its surrounding community.

Fondly and lovingly known by her Chowan family as Ms. Jewell, this remarkable woman demonstrated her love for Chowan University by serving a quarter century as a member of the Board of Trustees, serving on both the Executive Committee and the Development Committee. She was a founding member, donor to, and director of the Chowan Christian Service Association, which supports students bound for the ministry after graduation. She was also a supporter of student mission experiences, of international students, and of the music and art programs. She and her husband, John M. Glover, were responsible for the lead gift that made the soccer and lacrosse stadium possible.

Award and honored with the Baptist Heritage Award in light of her steadfast commitment.

It wasn’t just her stewardship and support that influenced the Chowan family. It was her heart and soul. She was well known for her position on offering scholarships to CCSA students.

As a board member, she sat on the interviews of every single applicant during her tenure. When the time came to deliberate, Ms. Jewell would shrug her small shoulders and look up with a grin. “I just love them all,” she would say. And it was obviously true that she did.

She was an active member of Galatia Baptist Church, including service as a Sunday School teacher, WMU leader, Mission Action member, and supporter of the church youth and music programs. Her faith and her faithfulness were a keen influence on all who knew her. Who didn’t want to be just like her?

If ever a women embodied the Fruit of the Spirit, it was Ms. Jewell. She exudes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. Her radiant smile was Southern hospitality itself. To experience her hug was to feel at home and at peace.

She was well-known as a community servant, with service as a founding trustee of Northeast Academy, past member of the Northampton County Board of Social Services, past member of the Northampton County Board of Appeals, a former member of the Citizens Advisory Committee of Odom Prison, and an avid supporter of the North Carolina Watermelon Festival in Murfreesboro.

She traveled with her husband on many safaris and loved the people she met. They began supplying Bibles to those that wanted to know the Lord in Africa and shipped countless cases of Bibles to countries such as Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Russia to help spread the Gospel, even years after their travels ended.

On April 7th, 2016, the Board of Trustees of Chowan University passed a Resolution of Appreciation Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Jewell Faye Glover. As a community, Chowan celebrates the long life and the rich legacy of Jewell Faye Glover, even while we mourn her passing from our midst. We commend her record of leadership and service to Chowan University and the region as worthy of emulation by all who may follow after her. She inspired all who knew her to renew their commitment to the well-being of the University and the community at large by the example of her abiding commitment.

Jewell Faye Greeson Glover was born on June 2, 1935, to Ferry Glapp Greeson and Lois Smith Greeson and raised with her cousins in the Bynum Road Community near Galatia, NC, by her Aunt Ruby Taylor after her mother passed away when she was three years old.

She graduated from Seaboard High School and married her high school sweetheart, John Millard Glover, on July 18, 1953. They were happily married for 62 years and raised five children; living in Margarettsville, NC, first, and for the past 43 years north of Seaboard, NC, on the family farm. Jewell Faye was an avid piano player before arthritis made it impossible to play. She worked with the youth for many years at Galatia Baptist Church. She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her life was a life of service to others. She was a devoted wife to her husband, John M. Glover, mother to five children, grandmother to fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom loved her dearly and whom she loved dearly.

Inaugural Women’s Swim Team Feels Right at Home in the New Bynum Rhodes Brown Aquatic Center

After thirteen years of waiting, Chowan University officially reopened the pool with a dedication and celebration on Saturday, September 10th. Dr. Chris White, University President, along with Frank Rose, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Ozzie McFarland, Vice President and Director of Athletics, expressed great excitement about opening the facility named for long-time Chowan University trustee Bynum Rhodes Brown.

A Murfreesboro native, Brown is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and a Veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. His mother, Grace Pearce Brown, was a graduate of Chowan in 1916, and Brown has served multiple terms on the Board of Trustees, including several as Chairman of the Board, and has the distinction of being one of the chosen few given an honorary doctorate by the school.

The ceremony began with Dr. White welcoming all those in attendance, extending special appreciation to representatives from USDA, Southern Bank, and the Southern Bank Foundation, who have partnered on loans and grants for many projects including the Bynum Rhodes Brown Aquatic Center.

He went on to explain the dormancy of the facility for more than a decade. “Thirteen years ago when I came to the campus and inspected the pool, I found a very poor pool and that’s being nice,” said Dr. White. “It was a mess. I made the executive

decision to declare the pool broke and irreparable, then closed it and drained the water.”

Trustee Chairman Frank Rose thanked Brown, his wife Shirley, and their daughter Grace, and credited them for making the occasion possible. “Your support of the aquatics center project and new women’s swimming program is deeply appreciated,” he said. “Bynum, you kept reminding us of the significance of this project and its relationship to the future of the university.

It is that spirit of leadership that encouraged us to make this

project a priority. Our students are indeed the beneficiaries of your generosity.”

“Bynum is a financial genius; he knows what questions to ask,” said Dr. White. “In terms of his business career in real estate and finance it’s been an incredible run for him and his wife.

Bynum has served on the Board of Directors for Southern Bank for many years and that experience was not only good for the bank and good for him, but it’s really been good for Chowan University with this experience.”

The University gifted the Brown family with custom swim team jackets courtesy of Chowan University Athletics and concluded the ceremony with a prayer of dedication by Mari Wiles, Minister to the University.

Chowan University then introduced the new eight-member women’s swim team and Head Coach Matt Hood to the audience. The face of this historic campus continues to change as the athletic program expands. With the addition of two new teams since this summer, Men’s Lacrosse and Women’s Swimming, Chowan has hopes of the possibility of adding a Men’s Swim team to the program in the coming years.

McFarland summed up, “Because of this great family’s effort we have turned what once was a storage area that looked nothing like a collegiate pool into a facility that makes a beautiful campus that much better.”

Chowan University is proud to honor the dedicated support of Bynum Rhodes Brown and his family with the official naming of the Bynum Rhodes Brown Aquatic Center. Join us as we celebrate the Brown family’s spirit of giving and the successful growth of the University.

Brown approached the podium and began by thanking his wife and daughter, followed by other family members who were in attendance. He thanked his friends from Murfreesboro, acknowledged Dennis Helsel, Charles Bentley, Frank Holding, Southern Bank, and a few other people who helped make this pool opening possible.

“One of the ladies on the swim team asked me if I knew how to swim,” Brown said. He described what he remembers as icy water in the original Chowan University pool back in his Boy Scout days. “I love this swimming pool and cannot tell Dr.

Jenkins Retreat & Conference Center

Peace in the Wilderness Somewhere southeast of Woodland and northwest of Aulander, well off the beaten paths of already remote eastern North Carolina, is a little slice of paradise - perhaps Chowan University’s best-kept secret. As you turn off the main road onto the curved gravel drive, cell phone reception drops away and you see nothing but pine trees and wilderness. Those who persevere by winding their way further up and further in are rewarded with rest, peace, and a deep sense of renewal.

Though neither are alumni, Joe Henry and Jenny Jenkins are no strangers to Chowan University, or to charitable giving.

You could almost say that both run in the family. The Olivia Benthall Jenkins residence hall is named for his grandmother who attended the Chowan Baptist Female Institute (Chowan University). His uncles Charles H. Jenkins and Herbert Jenkins both served on the Board of Trustees as did his cousin, Herbert Jenkins, Jr. Joe Henry’s brother Wayland L. Jenkins, Jr. is a notable Chowan University supporter, establishing the Fine Arts Center that bears his name.

“My grandmother made sure to leave a portion of her estate to Chowan before she passed away in the 60s,” Joe Henry recalls.

“And my brother Wayland has done all sorts of things.”

If there were a Jenkins family motto, it would certainly incorporate art, education, peace, and the area surrounding Hertford, Bertie, and Dare counties. They are deeply committed

to fostering opportunities in this area, where opportunity is often somewhat lacking. “Chowan means a great deal to the community,” says Joe Henry. “And the community, in turn, means a great deal to the University.”

The gift of a parcel of land with a small cabin attached may not be the go-to for charitable giving. But Joe Henry and Jenny Jenkins knew exactly what they were offering to Chowan students, faculty, and staff with their gift. After all, the land was their home through their entire marriage - just shy of fifty years. Chowan was quick to recognize the opportunity at offer, to add a facet to University life previously uncaptured. Thus, the Jenkins Retreat and Conference Center came into being, in memory of Olivia Benthall Jenkins.

“We were surprised that what we had to give was accepted with such enthusiasm,” says Jenny. “It was wonderful for us, because we didn’t want it to just become some hunting lodge, and we didn’t want it parceled up and sold off.”

The land has been in the family for generations. “Some of it goes back to a land grant from the King,” Jenny clarifies. With no children of their own to inherit, the Jenkins endeavored to find another way to keep it in the “family.”

“It was important that it stay, and belong, and be used for some beautiful purpose,” says Jenny.

In an era of smartphones, high speed internet, and ubiquitous social media it’s easy to lose sight of what it means to be unplugged. For college students, whose entire lives seem to be lived online, it’s also easy to lose sight of the value of face to face connection. With the addition of the Jenkins Retreat and Conference Center, more are going to have the chance to rediscover it for themselves.

In a short time, the property has already played host to several diverse groups. Alpha Chi Honor Society, Student Ministry Chaplains, the Development Office, and even Chowan Senior Staff have had the pleasure of the privilege of experiencing true retreat and renewal there.

The couple loves that the property will continue to be used as a meeting place. “Groups have always used to meet out there,” says Joe Henry. “Kiwanis, Boy Scouts, lots of local gatherings.”

They also frequently entertained.

Jenny, who is an artist, also hopes that the retreat will serve as a source of inspiration. “I hope it will be a place, too, for artists, musicians, and writers to spend some time and walk through the woods to be renewed and inspired.”

The entire acreage is suffused with the happy, contented glow of good memories. “Every time I drove up there it put a smile on my face,” Joe Henry agrees. “There are no bad memories there. We just want those same happy memories, that same deep quiet and peace, for everyone who experiences it.”

Feed Them & They Will

Succeed University administration doles a great deal of credit to Academic Success in terms of the increases in retention and engagement of Chowan students. The four-woman

team is a powerhouse of acceptance, caring, and investment in the daily lives of students. Adopting an, “if you feed them, they will come” attitude, the offices of Academic Success are frequently filled with delicious smells and treats. But it’s the hearts and souls of the student body that are truly fed.

Syble Shellito, Director of Academic Success, is the leader of this little band. She sets the tone for the entire endeavor, a tone that is decidedly accepting, inclusive, and nurturing.

“Our philosophy is that every student has potential and we can find a way to unlock it. We will try everything to figure out how to get through,” she says. “We show them that we value who they are, there is never an attack on who they are.” She keeps a large binder filled to overflowing with every thank you note and card she has ever received from a student, to remind her of why she does this work and how much it matters.

As Academic Advising Coordinator, Yevette Anthony is often the bridge between students and faculty, working to get students into and out of the right classes. “Advising is teaching,” she says, “and I am co-learner with each student.” She seeks to foster critical thinking, help students develop their problem-solving, and give a greater sense of responsibility. She emphasizes each student’s agency and autonomy.

“I challenge students to defend their choices and connect the dots between their personal goals and their educational goals,” she says. “I serve as a guide for students as they discover their own direction and the path they wish to travel.”

Jacquelyn Bates and Libby Whitaker are Academic Success Coaches. They each have certain students that they work closely with, depending on their credit status and progress. They work with students on time management, self-advocacy, and goal setting.

“Our office really focuses in on the mission and vision of Chowan,” Jackie says, “giving a second opportunity to students who would not get one otherwise.”

“The key is being genuine,” Libby adds.

“They know that we really love them.”

Each of them can cite multiple, specific examples of students whose lives were transformed or redirected in the matter of a few encounters. Their sincere belief in the value and potential of each student, is a critical component. Each day, at each moment, they are focused on helping one student at a time -- the student right in front of them. Which means each student they meet with, at that moment, is the most important student on campus. And it shows.

Christina Rupsch returns to Chowan to lead the new School of Fine and Applied Arts. She

plans to refine the curriculum, grow partnerships, encourage opportunities for collaborations, promote art exposure and increase offerings to the community, making the arts available for everyone. The combined School of Fine and Applied Arts brings together Theatre, Music, and Art under one umbrella. Introducing cross-disciplinary options to students offers them exposure, opportunities to become more rounded, and a better understanding of the application of their study.

“She is so creative and has so many fresh ideas to promote Fine Arts,” says Dr. Chris White, President of Chowan University. “There was rejoicing in the land when she returned.”

Rupsch returned, in part, due to the Chowan culture, which she describes as a place where ideas can be shared freely and implemented quickly for the betterment of students. She also missed the kindness and small size of the campus. “It is big enough that you really don’t know everybody, but small enough that you can make things happen,” Rupsch elaborates.

After her first decade at Chowan, a career opportunity for her husband moved the couple to Pennsylvania.

A few years later they returned to Tidewater Virginia where she continued her career as Director of the Visual Arts Center for Tidewater Community College for seven years before returning to Chowan, where the campus community eagerly welcomed her home.

“Chris is a very talented educator and leader with great experience fostering interdisciplinary relationships,” comments Dr. Danny Moore, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Her approach and leadership experience will serve the new School of Fine and Applied Arts and the University well and help us to expand opportunities for our students and advance the mission of the University.”

Rupsch found an altered physical campus but the same warm Chowan spirit. “Coming back now, the campus is beautiful, there are new buildings everywhere; it is just a wonderful place,” she says. “Chowan has the perfect environment for learning, exchanging ideas, and developing professionalism. We have so much to offer students. The sky is the limit!”

to the Task The Women leading at Chowan Chowan University was founded in 1848 as the Chowan Baptist Female Institute with the purpose of educating young women. Proof that Chowan was progressive in its ideas about the relationship of females and education from its very inception.

In the decades since, society and Chowan have seen remarkable progress in terms of equality among the sexes. In the United States, women now earn more college and graduate degrees than men do. They make up half the workforce, and are closing the gap in middle management.

Half a dozen global studies, conducted by the likes of Goldman Sachs and Columbia University, have found that companies employing women in large numbers outperform their competitors on every measure of profitability. Those who closely follow society’s shifting values see the world moving in a female direction.

At Chowan University, women have recently tipped the balance over their male counterparts. For the first time since becoming a coeducational institution, there are more women on campus than men. There are also more women in leadership positions at Chowan today than ever before, as evidenced by the six women currently serving as Dean or Associate Provost. These women are part of a sea change that see a more equal distribution of access, authority, and influence afforded to women today.

When Linda Miles earned her Ph.D. only about 20% of the finance professors in the United States were women, and that hasn’t changed significantly.

She doesn’t necessarily see that as a disadvantage, though, as Universities seek to establish diverse faculties.

She finds Chowan’s mission, inclusiveness, and small size to be welcome changes from large public institutions and adds, “Its location in coastal North Carolina is a definite plus.”

She values curiosity highly and encourages it in her students.

“My favorite question is ‘Why?’” she says. “Seeking explanations is a basis for academic pursuits.

Curiosity and reading will take anyone far.

Cynthia Nicholson never intended to hold a position in administration, but eventually her calling clarified. “It was a Jonah thing,” she says. “You don’t keep saying no to God.” She and her husband are both “ministry-driven” which has made a Chowan’s Christian emphasis a very good fit.

“I do young people,” she says.

“I realized how much I enjoyed young people and how a career in higher education would make me continue to think and learn.”

Brenda Tinkham was always a leader. “I was the oldest cousin,” she says. “I told them what to do and they did it.”

As a newlywed her options were limited by cultural expectations of women. “You were either a nurse or a teacher,” she recalls.

She chose education and has been steadily rising through the ranks ever since.

She is defined by a do-what-ittakes attitude. “If it’s not illegal and it’s not immoral, I’ll do whatever it takes for the school to succeed.”

AthleticsNews The Chowan University athletic department announced LaToya Jones as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach in May. President Dr. M. Christopher White commented, “I’m eager to welcome Latoya Jones and her family to Chowan. The women’s basketball program is primed for a successful season and I’m excited to see all that we will accomplish.”

Jones stated, “Chowan University is a place of faith, family, and pride. I felt the love for community, athletics, and family when I arrived on campus. I am grateful to be part of a thriving University that meets challenges with innovation, opportunity with enthusiasm, and change with embrace.”

Women’s Tennis Wins Second CIAA Championship in Three Seasons Chowan pushed an early lead to 2-0 when the #1 duo of Polina Novachuk and Victoria Smolchenkova took an 8-2 win in doubles play.

Chowan senior Jessica De Backre sealed the victory when she finished a marathon singles match that lasted well over two hours long to claim the 5-2 victory. She was named the 2016 CIAA Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament MVP for her efforts.

Novachuk, a native of Krashoyarsk, Russia has compiled a 16-4 record in number one singles play along with a 7-2 mark against league opponents.

An RBI single by Connor Arcobasso, passed ball, infield single by Wyatt Jr., base hit up the middle by Josh Martin, and threerun double by Emory Chopp handed the Hawks a commanding 11-2 lead in the top of the eighth.

Arcobasso, a native of Jefferson City, Missouri, hit at a .376 clip during the regular season for the Chowan Blue and White. He knocked in 35 RBI this season and tallied four homeruns. In conference play, he recorded a .404 batting average, ranking eleventh in league standings.

Franklinton, NC native, Cooper, joins Arcobasso on the All-CIAA Team with a team-high batting average of .409 and 40 RBI on the year.

a league-best 527 batting average against conference opponents while accounting for 23 RBI. Gurganus, hailing from Williamston, NC posted a .450 batting average during conference play, ranking fourth in the CIAA standings.

On the season, Gurganus carries a .349 batting average with 35 RBI to his name.

Hayes, VA native Martin posted a .345 batting average for the Hawks, tallied 30 RBI and hit five homeruns.

Smith rounds out the AllCIAA First Team. The Rocky Mount, NC native compiled a staff-best 7-2 record on the mound and recorded 61 strikeouts in 50.2 innings of work. He also posted a league-best 2.90 ERA. Wyatt Jr. of Greenville, South Carolina, hit at a .301 clip for the Chowan Blue and White.

He started in all 44 games this season for the Hawks.

Men’s Golf Captures 2016 CIAA Championship Crown

Jordan Francis led the Hawks with a team-low second round score of 78. He finished in fifth place individually in the 40-player field with a two-round score of 155.

Steven Rhinard shot a 78 on Thursday and carded an 82 for the Hawks on Friday.

He concluded play at the CIAA Championship tied for seventh with a two-round score of 160. Rich Edwards finished one stroke behind Rhinard and in ninth place individually. After carding an 85 in the opening round, Edwards showed resilience in the final day of play, carding a 76 for Chowan.

Billy Britton rounded out the scoring for Chowan. He carded an 83 for the Hawks in the final round of play after shooting an 80 in the first round. Britton’s two-day total of 163 was good for 11th place. Christian Fleetwood and Ryan Baker finished in

15th and 20th place overall.

Fleetwood posted a twoday score of 166. He carded an opening round score of 80 and followed with an 86 on day two. Baker shaved ten-strokes off his first round score (90) to card an 80 in the final round.

Ordnung led the Hawks to their third-straight CIAA Northern Tournament title this season while capturing their first-ever CIAA Championship crown. He is in his second season as Head Coach, and leads the program along with his mother, Ellen Ordnung, who has served the athletic department in various capacities for over thirteen years.

Softball Finishes as CIAA Championship Runner-up

Late heroics by the Rams propelled Winston-Salem University to a 5-4 win over Chowan University in the CIAA Championship. The Hawks ended the season with a 29-14 mark.

Kayla Robins headlines the 2016 All-CIAA Team as the CIAA Player of the Year while Haley Cooper was tabbed CIAA Rookie of the Year.

Chowan University Head Coach Brian De Witt earned CIAA Coach of the Year recognition. Danielle Baccus, Cooper, Tori Cragan, Robins and Tina White were all named to the All-CIAA Team with Kris Neal and Rachel Clark grabbing All-CIAA Second Team honors.

Jones takes the reins after serving at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

She spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Spartans before being promoted to Director of Basketball Operations for the 2015-16 season. Jones orchestrated alumni outreach, recruiting, and community service initiatives for the program in that capacity, while working primarily with post players.

Jones gained coaching experience on staff at her alma mater, Gardner-Webb University.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs posted a 27-36 record during her two seasons as an assistant, highlighted by a 23-11 record in 2010-11. That same season, the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team earned the Big South Conference Tournament crown for the first time in program history and made their firstever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Jones began her coaching career at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina. There, she led the Chargers to two state championship appearances including a state title in 2010.

Jones earned a degree in Elementary Education from Gardner-Webb in 2008. As a four-year women’s basketball student-athlete, she was named Atlantic Sun Conference AllAcademic four times and guided the Bulldogs to their first-ever Atlantic Sun Tournament finals appearance in 2006.

Class Acts Teams of Distinction

Chowan University paid homage to a rich athletic heritage as the athletic department named the 1955 and 1961 football teams as Teams of Distinction. Both teams were recognized prior to the October 1st football game.

The story of the 1955 Braves was one of spirit, victory, and pride.

Coaches Herb Appenzellar and Paul Davis turned out one of the finest squads in the history of Chowan. It is a story of a small town team which never knew when to throw in the towel even against gigantic odds. Possible defeat was turned into victory by the spirit to win. The Braves posted an 8-1 overall record in 1955 with wins over Baltimore College (21-0), Elon Jayvees (25-14), Fork Union (19-13), Wesley (25-6), Richmond B’s (40-26), Newport News Apprentice (26-7), Hargraves Military Academy (32-7), and Ferrum (38-6). Their lone loss was an 18-7 setback against Bullis.

Herman Clark, Jim Gravely, Jack Crenshaw, and Ben Rich were selected to the All-State Junior College Team after leading the Braves to an 8-1 mark. John Warren, Al Pierce, Ted Rollins, Joe Dickerson, and Fletcher Baker received All-State Honorable Mention accolades. Warren set two school records that season with 14 touchdowns and 1,009 yards rushing. The 1955 team captured Basket Bowl and Ruritan Bowl Championship crowns that same season.

The 1961 Braves share the honor as being one of the best in Chowan history. The team posted an 8-1 mark on the season with victories over Gardner-Webb (6-0), Wingate (19-0), Davidson Freshman (38-7), Newport News Apprentice (25-0), Richmond Freshman (27-6), Washington & Lee Freshman (50-0), Wesley College (34-0), and William & Mary Freshman (30-7). Their lone loss was a 6-3 setback against Ferrum. The Braves’ 8-1 record earned them consideration for the Junior College Rose Bowl.

The 1961 team was led by Chowan legend Coach Jim Garrison and Jerry Hawkins. The team ranked as high as sixth in the nation among junior colleges and featured one of the top defensive teams in the country as the Braves surrendered just 13 points that season. Bobby Gray and Martin Forbes were named Junior College First Team All-American.

1950s

Chowan alumni from classes 1950-53 had a mini-reunion in June. They enjoyed spending time together reminiscing about their days at Chowan. They enjoyed lunch, then viewed the Herb Appenzellar Fountain located adjacent to the Pond Football Center. Dr. Appenzellar was the Athletics Director and a professor at Chowan from 1951-56. Pictured above, first row: Abie Condrey, Margaret Deloatch, Sarah Belch, Lorene Paul; second row: Ellen Downs Barnes, Jay Willcox, CJ Belch, Brinson Paul, Peggy Blythe Caryle Wimbish ’58 recently attended the National Convention for Travelers Protective Association (TPA) where he was elected as a Director on the National Board.

He will travel to St. Louis at least four times a year for National Board of Directors meetings and looks forward to serving on a board with others from all across the country.

1970s Tom Alligood ’70 was added to Chowan’s Gallery of Distinguished Alumni. He is a New Home Sales Specialist at the Club at Westport in the Community of Denver, NC. After graduating from Chowan, Tom went on to receive a degree from UNCCharlotte in 1972. He was employed with Hatteras Yachts in High Point in the fall of 1972. Tom has been married to his wife, Dawn, since 1982, and the two share a hound dog named Gibbs. They have lived on Mountain Island Lake, just north of Charlotte, since 1991.

Ray Viverette ’70 has published his first book about life in eastern North Carolina during the turbulent 1960s. A preview of the book is available at www.viverette.org. .

For Chowan Alumni & Friends Anthony L. Turner ’78, passed away on August 30, 2016. He was a native of Warrenton, NC and played football at Chowan.

Technician, and Dental Office Manager. She is a Sunday School Teacher at Mars Hill Baptist Church in Hillsborough, NC and a Kidcycle Volunteer. Rachel and her husband, Forrest, have one son, Wesley.

Anthony Hill ’83 and his wife, Gwendolyn, visited to see some of the new additions to the football program. He is a native of Charlottesville, VA. After attending Chowan Junior College he played football at Liberty University and graduated with a business degree. He is currently employed by Skyline Middle School in Harrisonburg, VA as their Instructional Support Liaison.

Glenn “Mike” Lastra ’04 completed his Masters in Education Leadership at Saint Leo University in June 2015. After teaching high school Biology for 13 years, he is now the Assistant Principal at Eastside Elementary School in Brooksville, FL. Mike and his wife, Laura “Beth” Lastra ’04 have two children: Cooper (4) and Harper (1).

Calvin L. Baldwin, Jr. ’07 is an agent with the Roanoke Valley Insurance Agency in Murfreesboro, NC.

Ben Brumbaugh ’01 and his family had a delightful tour of the Chowan University campus. Ben played football at Chowan and enjoyed seeing the Pond Football Center, the stadium, and meeting Head Coach Tim Place.

Kay Thomas, Alumni Director, assisted them in touring his “old dormitory room” in Simons Hall where he lived with the same roommate for his four year tenure. Ben is the Territory Manager at Elias Wilf Flooring and lives in Yorktown, VA.

2010s

Rachel Orr ’03 was added to Chowan’s Gallery of Distinguished Alumni. Rachel earned a BS in Business Administration from Chowan with a concentration in Marketing. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority, Rotaract, and Howard Award Recipient. She was recently named Assistant Director of Alumni Records for the University of North Carolina General Alumni Association.

Rebecca Lapham Yaun ’05 recently celebrated five years of serving her community of Rome, GA as a Chiropractor and four years of being a professor at Life University in Marietta, GA. On November 7, 2016 she married Benjamin Allen Yaun and had the great experience of having her patients be part of every aspect of her wedding.

Former Chowan University football player Adrian Ferns ’12 has been drafted to the newly formed China Arena Football League.

A native of Los Angeles, California, he will compete for Shenzhen Naja, one of six teams in the league. The linebacker competed for two seasons for the Hawks after transferring from Los Angeles Harbor College. As a senior in 2012, Ferns played in all ten games for Chowan and recorded three tackles with one for loss (1 yard).

The 2012 season was one of Chowan’s most successful as a Division II program as the squad compiled a 6-4 overall record and 5-2 finish in CIAA play. During his junior campaign, he competed in nine games and tallied 15 tackles (eight solo, seven assisted) with three tackles for loss (six yards).

Quinton McDuffie ’13 was added to Chowan’s Gallery of Distinguished Alumni.

He earned a BS in Criminal Justice and was an outstanding Chowan basketball player.

After graduation Quinton signed a professional contract to play basketball in Moscow, Russia with Club PlanetaUniversitet Ukhat. In his rookie season he averaged 21.9 PPG, 9.2 RPG, and 4.0 APG. In 2014 he signed contract to play professional basketball in Cantabria, Spain with LaGallofa Cantbaskets. In 2015 he returned to the US, and CU Today | Fall/Winter 2016

Class Acts The Life and Legacy of Dr. Hargus Taylor Dr. Raymond Hargus Taylor, Chaplain and Religion Faculty Emeritus of Chowan, died peacefully on October 30, 2016.

Beginning as Chaplain to the College (now University) in 1963, Dr. Taylor held many positions throughout his career, including Director of Denominational Relations and Chair of the Department of Religion. He was a founding member of the Chowan Christian Service Association (CCSA), serving as Secretary from its inception in 2005 until 2014. Even after his retirement in 1999, Dr. Taylor continued to serve as University Historian.

Dr. Taylor was a confidant to several presidents and a leader of spiritual life on campus over his 36 years of service to the University. He was a giant to his family, this campus, and the community. Yet to the students who knew and loved him dearly, he was and will always be simply “Chap” or “the Pope”.

Dr. Taylor and his wife, Doris, were instrumental in establishing the Oscar Creech Collection of Baptist History at Chowan’s Whitaker Library; the R. Hargus and Doris Taylor CCSA Scholarship at Chowan University; and the Taylor Religious Heritage Lectures and Endowment at Chowan. For their faithful service and support of the University, they were given Chowan’s highest honor, the Spirit of Chowan Award, in 2015.

Sally Zaghmout ’13 was added to Chowan’s Gallery of Distinguished Alumni. A native of Palestine, Sally earned a BS in Business Administration at Chowan, where she was a Presidential Ambassador, Tour Guide, and Office Assistant in Admissions. In 2013 she began her career as a Freelance Sales and Marketing Representative for LAV Turkish Bath & Spa. In 2016 she became a Personal Assistant with Sercorp at their World Trade Center offices. Sally is now Assistant Manager at Servcorp in the United Arab Emirates in the Real Estate division. She offers the world’s finest serviced offices and business packages solutions.

2016 Grads Hired at Chowan

Taylor and his family were avid supporters of the institution’s athletic program. The relationship with the men’s basketball team was particularly close from 1977 to 1989, when he served as “unofficial” chaplain to the team. He was inducted into the Chowan University Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.

His interest in historical research and writing and genealogy led him to write histories of the Cashie Baptist Church, the Murfreesboro Baptist Church, the Winter Park Baptist Church, the Flat River Baptist Association, the Chadbourne Baptist Church, the North Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Chowan College and the Rosemary Baptist Church. He contributed about thirty articles to various publications. For his work fostering Baptist history and heritage, Dr. Taylor received the Baptist Heritage Award in 2012.

He served as a member of the Board of Deacons and as a Sunday School teacher at Murfreesboro Baptist Church, and was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Hertford County Habitat for Humanity. A true minister, he served as interim pastor to many local congregations over the years.
