Dear Chowan Family,

Thank you for faithfully supporting Chowan University. I am honored to continually witness a great return on your investment in our students. This was recently demonstrated by the graduating seniors at our commencement ceremonies. These speakers, representing the classes of 2020 and 2021, credited Chowan with their success. They lauded Chowan as the place where they found their voice, their hope, and for some, their second chance. It was a powerful reminder of why this University exists. It is our privilege to help each student become the person God is calling them to be.

Chowan’s faculty and staff have been excellent stewards of your investment. Faculty shouldered the challenges of hybrid and online classes. Their commitment to teaching, both in the academic sense and by illustration of their behavior, served as fine examples of Chowan’s core values. Staff creatively served students by keeping them safe while still providing some semblance of “normal” in a completely abnormal year. The ideals, which both faculty and staff modeled, were significant amidst challenging times.

I am so grateful for your commitment to us this year. You rallied around us and donated $3.57 million dollars, the greatest amount in the school’s history. You gave to your passions by giving to capital projects, starting scholarships, backing the Brave Hawks Club, donating to Campus Ministry, and the Chowan Christian Service Association. You embraced our first ever social media Day of Giving - Chowan Gives. We had over 545 donors give in 24 hours.

This report is a celebration of your investment. Be sure to take time to see how collectively your generosity is helping Chowan thrive. We are All Together, Chowan!

LECTURESHIPS

Mary Frances Hobson Lecture and Prize

The annual Mary Frances Hobson Lecture and Prize for Distinguished Achievement in Arts and Letters brings the University and surrounding community together each spring to celebrate the accomplishments of an author of note from the region. Initiated in 1995 by the Hobson Family Foundation of San Francisco, the award serves as a memorial to Mary Frances Hobson (1912-1993), a journalist and poet, who was the first woman to receive the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in journalism from the University of North Carolina. Previous Hobson Prize recipients are: Kay Gibbons, Mark Richard, Jill McCorkle, Randall Kenan, G.D. Gearino, Amy Hempel, Allan Gurganus, Padgett Powell, Sheri Reynolds, Chuck Sullivan, Shelia P. Moses, Michael Parker, Josephine Humphreys, Judy Goldman, Darnell Arnoult, Lee Smith, Robert Morgan, Silas House, Joseph Bathanti, Sharyn McCrumb, Dorothy Allison, Edward P. Jones, Kevin Wilson, Jim Grimsley, Wiley Cash, Crystal Wilkinson, and Michel Stone.

Taylor Religious Heritage Lectures

An endowed annual lecture series, the Heritage Lectures were established by Dr. Hargus and Mrs. Doris Taylor for the Chowan University community. The lectures focus on religious personalities and movements as contributors to our understanding of our Judaeo-Christian Heritage.

The Reverend George T.and Luvenia B. Rouson Memorial Lecture

This annual lecture was established in 2003 as a joint venture with the Town of Murfreesboro, Chowan University, Murfreesboro Historical Association and local historian, Alice Eley Jones. Being known as educators and community-minded people who set a good example for others to follow, the event named in the Rouson family’s honor was designed to recognize citizens who have a positive influence in the community.

Dan and Sallie Surface Lecture in History

Chowan University and the Department of History host a lecture featuring a leading scholar each October. The Dan and Sallie Surface Lecture in History is a free event and open to the public. The lecture is an opportunity to bring together Chowan University and the larger community to listen to an engaging presentation of new research in southern, Civil War, North Carolina, or Virginia history.

"As I reflected on why I love Chowan, a commonality manifested: Chowan fosters one hundred percent authenticity one hundred percent of the time. Chowan is a place that gathers those from all backgrounds, a place that embraces individuality and accepts the not so ordinary. Watching classmates excel on the field, in the classroom, clubs, sororities, fraternities, art exhibits, music concerts and so much more- there was always a place for everyone."

"On the first day of freshman year, each class began with everyone going around the room introducing themselves and explaining why they chose to come to Chowan. I can say more than 90 percent of my classmates, including myself, all gave the same reason why they chose to come here. We all said, “Chowan was a second chance.” No matter what the second part of their reason was, the beginning was always the same. For example, freshman year I said, “Chowan was a second chance for me to prove to myself that I can do the work and succeed on and off the soccer field.” After my first few months, I had met some great people, played against the best soccer players I have ever faced, and unknown to both of us, I had met my future wife. But nothing will beat the look on my parent’s face when I brought home my first semester grades and showed them that I had achieved a 4.0 GPA. After struggling so much through high school, this achievement allowed me to prove to them, and to myself, that I can succeed and do great things."
