From Ou r Preside nt & C eo
WelcomE Greetings! It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 Chorus America Summer Conference. I must say, being patient is hard for me and right now I can hardly wait another day for us to meet again in person. But I’m also finding that the fact that we’re finally this close just brings one more new set of questions into focus. New procedures, multiple scenarios, getting on the same page with my community —challenging questions that I imagine you’re wrestling with, too. As the elusive “new normal” that we’ve been picturing continues to be delayed, perhaps the most familiar notion of all is that progress is slower than we hoped, with new hurdles popping up constantly. That’s ok. We’ve always been resilient. Resilience loves company—and it loves learning and discussion also. That’s what our 2021 Summer Conference is all about. The reality is that each of us must use the latest information at hand to inform our own complex, evolving set of circumstances as best we can. But we come together to combine our collective knowledge, share the considerations on our minds, and gain context that helps us understand our respective situations and decisions. Don’t forget, mind you, that this is also a time of tremendous possibility for choruses. Our organizations have a unique opportunity to experiment and imagine a new set of relationships with our singers, audiences, and broader communities. Amid our society’s dramatic shift, Conference is your supportive and energetic forum to explore, rethink, and refine practically any aspect of your work, and shape the story that your chorus will tell in our collective pursuit of healing and restoration. Our mantra of sorts for this year of two virtual Conferences has been “Let’s Navigate the Changes In Our Field Together.” In the past year, we’ve learned that coming together may not always look the same as we’re used to—but it’s more important than ever, especially when our individual paths are so different. I encourage you to take advantage of any and all elements of Conference that help you feel more connected—whether gathering (virtually) at an appointed time or learning asynchronously if that works better for you.
Amid our society’s dramatic shift, Conference is your supportive and energetic forum to explore, rethink, and refine practically any aspect of your work, and shape the story that your chorus will tell in our collective pursuit of healing and restoration.
Whatever your exact route may be, let’s use this moment to come together and calibrate our navigation systems—because we’re all heading for the other side of this.
