Welcome to Washington State
Located in the Northwest corner of the United States, Washington is the nation’s third busiest hub for international trade. More than $90.6 billion in goods are shipped around the globe annually from the state and one in three jobs is trade related. Our proximity to Pacific Rim markets, combined with our trade savvy culture and equidistance between Asian and European markets, makes Washington a natural and lucrative trade partner.
A Centralized Export Hub
Washington State knows the global marketplace. Nearly 9,000 companies in the state are engaged in exporting, shipping products and services all over the world, including aircraft, medical devices, software, electronics, agricultural and consumer products, petroleum and chemicals. Some of Washington’s ports are a day’s sail closer to key Asian markets than any other west coast ports and many of the state’s 11 deep-water ports can handle ships as large as 10,000 TEUs as well as fully loaded Panamax-class ships.
A Growth-Oriented Economy
The economy of Washington State is booming. Led by the aerospace and technology sectors, the state is not only attracting such well-known firms as Apple, Alibaba, Mitsubishi, T-Mobile and SGL Group, but is headquarters to such well-known international brands as Amazon, Costco, Microsoft and Starbucks. The state’s primary sectors – aerospace, clean tech, information and communication technology, life sciences and maritime – provide excellent investment opportunities for multinational companies looking for new markets, new customers and new partners. Foreign-owned entities are treated the same as Washington State companies under the law.
Low Cost, Sustainable Energy
Washington State has the largest hydroelectric power grid in the United States and offers businesses some of the lowest cost energy in the nation (as low as 4.25¢ per kilowatt-hour). This source of clean, renewable energy is enhanced by a growing reliance on other sustainable forms of energy, including wind, solar, biofuel and tidal power. The state also offers businesses competitively priced natural gas, which is delivered via pipeline from British Columbia, Canada. The result: a highly efficient, scalable and seamless power grid that ensures uninterrupted, consistent flows of energy to businesses that have critical power needs such as advanced materials facilities, food manufacturing plants, cloud computing and data storage farms.
A Highly Skilled Workforce
Washington prides itself on having a savvy, motivated workforce that is not only ready to tackle the needs of today, but the challenges of tomorrow. Approximately 90% of residents are high school graduates; a third have some level of advanced degree. Two major universities, 34 community and technical colleges and a host of private two and four-year colleges and universities help meet the emerging demand for workers in aerospace, information and communication technology, advanced manufacturing, clean technology and life sciences. Our unique culture encourages a lifetime of learning, and innovative public-private partnerships ensure a steady supply of highly skilled, highly motivated workers.

A Culture of Creativity
Washington is a place where new ideas become international icons. As the headquarters for major corporations that have virtually reinvented aviation, retailing, e-commerce, software, real estate, information technology and travel, Washington State has a deeply ingrained entrepreneurial spirit and can-do mindset. Part of the secret to our success is an ecosystem where ideas are readily shared and brought to market, not only within an industry, but across sectors. With a higher than average per-capita patent ratio, we back up our ideas with the business know-how and ingenuity required to seize market share, dominate the competition and create a culture of creativity that is not only remarkable and refreshing, but world-class.
