"Hulu Langat" The site location of Unit C Design Studio 5 is located in Hulu Langat, which was hit by extensive flooding. For Unit C, we focus primarily on current relief trends and their design implications for communities in vulnerable and in need of humanitarian support.

How can we effectively advocate for policies that help disaster victims? How humanitarian design and architecture can help save lives, protect sustainable development, and promote peacebuilding within the framework of larger communities and resilience, while respecting the fundamental human rights of safety and shelter.

_Social Disconnection The Hulu Langat District had been affected by severe flood for many years.

From the site visit and site survey with the residence of Hulu Langat, I realized that the locals are actually very friendly, as they will help each other during the post-flood.

"What causes the flood ?" _Deforestation

As shown in Figure 1.2 clearly shows that the rapid development in Hulu Langat leads to extensive deforestation which caused the site vulnerable to flooding.

_River pollution

The awareness of environmental protection by the residents is lacking. The river and drain pollution will reduce the water capacity and cause the flood to happen more easily.

"How to tackle the issue?"

To address these issues, community resilience in Hulu Langat must be improved and strengthen the relationship among the locals of all generations.

Disasters lead to health / mental issue, lost too financial support and resource for living.

To gather as much people as possible, so that people could work together and helping each other to solve to difficulties.

"Urban Farming" Urban farming is an alternative strategies that could improve resilience through community empowerment with renaturing the environment.

Community empowerment activity could develope community resilience in the context of food and nutrition security specifically as emergency response.

Dystopia - Current Condition Everyone has their own personal problems to take care of. Each individual are having difficulties coping with disasters.

Connection - Community Resilience To gather as much people as possible, so that people could work together and helping each other to solve to difficulties.

Without the helping hands from the others, community resilience cannot be achieved.

Utopia - Living With Water Community resilience will lead to increase in community empowerment, and enhance social connection.

The community can then solve each other's problems and adapt to and recover from disasters quickly.

Program Strategies "User Group"

"Proposed program" The proposed program is based on the site issues, as mentioned above, there are numerous issues we noticed during site visit in Hulu Langat, such as people are having difficulties coping with disasters, adults are working out of town and lack of communal space, which ultimately create a sense of social disconnection in Hulu Langat.

At Hulu Langat, every user has their own interests, activities and lifestyle. But in fact, they all need each other to survive, for example farmers will have to sell their resource to markets and food stalls, while working people may need to buy breakfast from food stalls.

Elderly & Children The site is mainly occupied by elderly and children. Most of the elderly chose to stay there after retirement as they have adapted to the environment and living habits there. function during flood period.

Adults Some of the adults in Hulu Langat are having their own business at the site.

However, many of them are working out of town, so they don't stay locally often.

Then, the main purpose is to provide locals with a space with local culture and spirit.

This space is proposed to the locals who does their farming daily, cooking iconic traditional food and selling their goods. The local culture and spirit space is the place to keep the simplicity of kampung life with culture essence of the Hulu Langat people.

Framework of proposed program

In short, both user groups have similar program and activity needs. Therefore, it is possible to link the adults, elderly and children of Hulu Langat to live and work together to cope with adverse situations and recover quickly.

The local culture and spirit space is the place to keep the simplicity of kampung life with culture essence of the Hulu Langat people.

Axonometric In normal times, the Social Hub act as a community center, and the program inside is mainly based on the local culture and spirit of Hulu Langat, where all the locals in Hulu Langat are welcome to work, trade, live and interact together.

During the monsoon season, the function of the building will be transformed into a flood relief center, the farm's crops act as a food storage, which can be distributed to the victims, and the communal kitchen will provide food for the victims, in addition to the elevated space can be used as a temporary shelter.

In conclusion, from 10 years from now, I hope that my Social Hub can actually improve the relationship, community empowerment of the people in Hulu Langat, and ultimately achieve Community Resilience. Although it is a tiny approach, but I believe the people, the awareness, the connection, the small changes will bring huge impact to the community.
