T H E Langat River is one of the longest river in Selangor.

However, with the progress of the times people are not appreciating it, treating it as a back drain. Therefore, the main design objective for the art gallery is to create awareness of importance of protecting the environment, especially the Langat River.

Parts of Kajang city were submerged due to heavy rains that formed flash floods in 1998.

Several villagers were also submerged around 1990. Growing population pressure of past decades, deforestation, lake reclamation, and embankment construction on riverbanks all exacerbated the flood situation.

Created by British Soldiers and The road that connects dengkil to putrajaya was developed around 1999, when KLIA developed, the government connected dengkil road to KLIA. Dengkil became a strategic location, communication facilities and infrastructure. Due to changes in economic policies, Langat Basin started to become a developing manufacturing zone in Selangor.

In Dengkil, some of the traditional village homes has retained their wooden structure and zinc roofing. Dengkil is full of culture as events like storytelling, book launches, litfest, and poetry events are held around Dengkil.

Most of the locals will enjoy their lunch and dinner in restaurants such as Restaurant Sinki, Restaurant Kah Heong Pao and etc.

Agriculture

The starting point of Sungai Langat is at Gunung Nuang of the Titiwangsa Range. The river flows westward across the state of Selangor covering a total distance of 190km. 10 ancient artefacts were discovered at kampung Jenderam Hilar near Dengkil which showed that settlement dated back to 2500 BC. According to archaeological, Neolithic communities in the area was more sedentary and engaged mostly in agricultural activities.

Most of the local prayers are required to gather together at the mosque for the Friday noon prayer in Masjid Jamiatus Solehah.

In the morning, most of the locals will bring their children to SMK Dengkil.

The first diagram showed heavy traffic at the road near to the market due to the residents and hawker went to buy the groceries at the Dengkil Market .Besides, 8a.m. to 10a.m. also the peak hours of Dengkil market where the market business hour start from 6 am to 12 am.

v Dengkil brings the meaning of the Dragon River in chinese, Long Xi ( ). Some believed that it was chased away by British. The dragon was badly injured and spew out black blood and thus Sungai Air Hitam was called.

Hu Gong temple is the 89year-old temple. it is dedicated to the Chinese deity Nazha, or the Third Prince.

Year 1824 In 1824 langat was described as a "small river" with about 500 people living along its alley who exported tin and rattan. Later many immigrants from china moved to the area as originally it was a tin mining area.

Year 1940-1960 Around 1940s, Tok Batin named this village as 'Dingkil' as there were many durian trees on Langat River bank.

After a long time the name changed to Dengkil. Dengkil originates from Sungai Langat areas that are more shallow along the river. Around 1950s to 1960s the river had lots of fish and lobster as it became murky and the life of the river was extinct and the word 'Dengkat' turn into a Dengkil.

7 min walk The Langat dam was built in 1981 with the catchment area of 54 km². Langat dam or Pongsun Dam was built for and water supply upstream of Sungai Langat. Semenyih River is tributary of Langat River. Both rivers were once very polluted.

This shows the annual wind rose of the Dengkil which is mostly from the south side and northeast side while the northwest and southeast sides has weaker and less wind.

The weather is hotter and drier during June but gets colder and wetter as the rainy season starts and at its peak during November and December.

SITE CONTEXT

A closed enclosure to exhibit works of art that belong to the street: the street-art and the graffiti art. Bringing the water into the building also consists of pushing to a climax the work on the erasing the boundaries which is at the base of all the architectural work of the project.

Thematic exhibitions of artwork; on-site public programming, studio workshops, and art classes; school and community outreach programs that provide free art education to underserved children and a permanent collection of over 2,000 pieces of children’s art from around the world.

The highlight of the gallery is the magnificent Kuala Lumpur City Model, which showcases the city’s past, present, and future. It also hopes to inspire a greater appreciation and awareness of heritage issues, architectural and cultural, through it art pieces.

Complementing the art galleries are courtyard cafe, bakery, bistro, retail outlet, library, accommodation for short-term visiting artist, curators and other creative guests. On the first floor, a multipurpose performance space is designed for China House's own shows.

Flooding Issue The site in dengkil once encounter a heavy rain on Nov 11 2017 causes the water level from Sungai Langat increases nearly one metre.

Before The river and the landscape is clearly seperated, the form of the river was narrow and deep resulting flow of the river more rapidly and not user-friendly.

The recommended sound level for an art gallery is ≤ 45 dBA. To minimize the noise and acoustical problems, the sources of noise from indoor and outdoor (around the site) need to be considered.

Having interesting programs along the water body, it is possible to further attract locals towards the area, which mostly includes the younger generation.

This gives an opportunity to entice them as well as educate them about the site.

To further connect with the diverse social group, the art gallery has to be able to interact with them instead of being one sided. This would give them more reasons to go to the gallery.

Automated Flood Barrier The device activated the flood barrier whenever the river level rises, providing a 24/7 hour protection with no manpower needed. Because it uses water physics to push the barrier, there is no electricity needed to operate it.

After The river and the landscape are merged, providing a wider volume for stormwater, preventing flooding to the site. When the water level is low, visitors are given the opportunity to get close the "blue" not just the "green", exploring more in the nature, enhancing the power of life.

In conclusion, from 10 years from now, I am hoping my art gallery can actually encourage people to use the water, although it is a tiny approach for the whole stretch of river, but I believe that the awareness, the small changes will bring big impact to the river.
