FOR AN ARTICLE ON THE BENEFITS OF GINGER

CHOCOLATE, CASHEW & GINGER ENERGY BALLS None of us would say no to more energy! A quick and easy energy ball recipe is ideal if you find yourself flagging this February! The recipe for Cashew & Ginger Energy Balls is by Deliciously Ella. I added some chocolate to some of mine! You can vary the amount of ginger depending on your taste! To make 10 larger or 20 smaller you’ll need: • 200g of cashews • 200g of dates • 2 heaped teaspoons of ground ginger

Method Pulse the oats and cashews in a food processor until they form a flour. Then pit the dates and add them to the food processor along with the ginger. Blend until everything has mixed together and formed a nice sticky dough. Roll the mixture into 10 or 20 equal sized balls and place in the fridge for an hour to set. Dip into the melted chocolate or cover completely! Pop them back in the fridge to set. Once set store in an airtight container in the fridge.

• 50g of oats • 150g dark chocolate melted (optional)

where it has naturalised. It was introduced into Britain in 1596 and was first recorded in the wild in 1838. It was a very popular plant in early gardens, but went out of use later until the eighteenth century when it became fashionable as ‘Capability’ Brown included it in some of his designs for parks and gardens.

FEBRUARY IN CRESCENT GARDEN Nestled among the roots of the large beech tree in Crescent Garden you will see at this time of the year some yellow flowers looking remarkably like small buttercups. They belong to the same family as buttercups, the Ranunculaceae, but are a completely separate species, Eranthis hyemalis, commonly known as winter aconite. Both of its names tell you something about it:- Eranthis is derived from Greek words meaning ‘spring flower’ and hyemalis from Latin meaning winter flowering. The common name also tells you of its flowering time and it is, indeed, usually the first sign of colour in the middle of winter, often before that other winter favourite, the snowdrop. The other part of its common name, aconite, was given it when classification was not based on such scientific principles as it is now and as its leaves look very like those of the true aconite it was given the same name. Aconite, monkshood or wolfsbane, is an extremely poisonous plant, to be handled very carefully. All parts of the winter aconite are also poisonous as it contains cardiac glycosides which can stimulate the heart in small doses, but in larger doses can cause vomiting and serious heart damage. Winter aconite is native to chalky woodlands in France, Italy and the Balkans, but has been introduced into various other parts of Europe,

The plant grows from small tubers, which survive underground for many years and in the right conditions will increase the number of plants to make a carpet of golden blooms even in snowy or icy conditions. The bright yellow flowers are actually composed of sepals, which in other flowers are, more commonly, seen as the green bracts which enclose a bud. The petals in Eranthis are reduced to tubular nectaries, containing copious nectar to feed bees and other insects out foraging early in the year. Seeds are formed in pods as the flowers die off and they will also help to increase the number of plants, though it may be two or three years before they germinate and even then they need exposure to freezing temperatures to break their dormancy. So we may never get the plants spreading by seed in Crescent Garden as it is rarely that cold, especially with global warming making a difference. If you are tough enough to withstand the cold as this little plant is, then it is a great advantage to bloom early in the year, when there is maximum light on the forest floor before the leaf canopy shades the ground. Also there is no competition for nutrients from other species in January or February. When the flowers have died back and seeds have been shed the whole plant disappears into its underground tubers until the next winter. So why not try growing some of these winter gems in your own garden. They thrive on neglect in a shady corner under trees, as long as the soil is moderately fertile and not too heavy. And do leave them undisturbed throughout the Summer and Autumn.

S Christine Davies Solicitor

Do you have important legal documents in place to protect your interests and make life easier for you and your family, whatever the future brings? If you have received a diagnosis of dementia, or are concerned about becoming ill and unable to cope with paying your bills, wouldn’t it be helpful for a family member to be able to step in and deal with your finances? If your family member needed to make decisions for you, instead of just acting on your instructions, they would need your formal written authority to do this. Formal authority can be given by creating a Lasting Power of Attorney. This document will allow your family member to take over managing your money, either temporarily or long term. You can also create a Lasting Power of Attorney which allows your family member to make decisions for you about medical treatment, if you are unable for any reason to make your own decisions. This is not the same as an Advance Decision, which is a document which sets out your decision to refuse medical treatment in the future, under specific conditions.

1 6

If you are caring for an elderly relative, or are likely to be doing so in the future, a Lasting Power of Attorney will mean that you can provide the support your relative needs and access services on their behalf, without the difficulties, stress and resistance you would otherwise encounter. Having a Will gives you peace of mind that your money, property and personal possessions will be going to the people you have chosen to benefit. An out of date Will can cause problems within the family or mean that a chosen beneficiary receives nothing. If you have any unanswered questions about Wills or Lasting Powers of Attorney, Christine will be pleased to help, so do please get in touch for a free, no obligation, chat.

THIS WINTER GET ZINGY WITH GINGER! This month we hear all about one of my favourite flavours! Whether it’s used in my morning tea or a cookie I love it! Local Apprentice Medical Herbalist Louise Courtney shares the benefit of ginger... Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a pungent, aromatic and warming spice that has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Research indicates that it can enhance immune function,

blood

circulation,

reduce

inflammation, aid digestion and work as an effective painkiller, even in small doses. Ginger comes into its own at this time of year as it is a powerful antiviral and is effective in treating colds and flu. Ruled by Fire and the Sun, ginger increases heat and vitality, helping to secrete

cinnamon, chop the ginger and add both to the water. Bring to the boil and then gently simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add the lemon juice.

Strain and then add the

honey/maple syrup to taste. For extra zestiness you could add dried orange peel, or fennel seed for sweetness and digestive support. Start with smaller amounts of ginger to gauge your tolerance, and of course you can make larger amounts of the tea and keep in a flask to drink throughout the day! Let’s work towards Spring with a zing! Although considered very safe, caution should be exercised for larger doses and longer-term use, especially in pregnancy and for those taking warfarin, due to its blood-thinning qualities. sweep of God’s creation. It reminds me that life is a gift, not something I’ve earned or worked for, and that the world will keep spinning long after I’m gone. As humans, we have a bad habit of thinking too much of ourselves. To walk in the ‘cathedral of creation’ – whether it’s climbing mountains or sitting by the sea – reminds us that the universe was here long before we were. No matter what we make on the Earth with the natural resources we’ve been given, there is a Builder and Architect who was at work long before us.

Meet every Friday afternoon 2-4pm in the Foster Room, (next to Holyrood Church.) We are a non profit making group, who make garments and craft items to give to, or sell to raise funds for the 13 local Hampshire charities, which we support. Our Friday afternoons are spent socializing as well as producing some lovely gifts, suitable for all ages. Most of these garments and gifts are then sold at our regular sales. Our next sales in Stubbington Library are on Saturday 3rd February and 2nd March 2024, from 9.30am to 12.00pm. We also hold sales in St. Columba's Church Hall, on the last Saturday of the month, so Saturday 24th February between 10.00am to 12.00pm. Please come and support us and see what great things we have managed to produce. I would like to thank our many supporters who donate wool, material and other useful items to help us in our quest.
