LOVES WINTER TEXANS!
T
he Rockport-Fulton area depends on Winter Texans to boost an economically slow first quarter of the year. Early indications show the Winter Texan season to be about the
same as last year or slightly better. There are approximately 5,000 spaces for RVs with over 50 active RV Parks in the Aransas County - Rockport and Fulton area. Some opt for hotel rooms, or rooms in condos and cottages. There are approximately just under 100 park models, cabins or cottages located in the Rockport and Fulton area. "The Winter Texans are active volunteers for many of our non-profit organizations, they join our churches, attend our events, enjoy our local attractions, eat at our restaurants, gas up, etc." explains Diane Probst, President/CEO of the Rockport-
Fulton Chamber of Commerce. A survey done by the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce shows that Winter Texans choose to come to the RockportFulton area because of the warm climate, friendly people and there are so many things to do here. “Using the numbers of two people per household at 90 percent occupancy over a 30-day period, it is estimated that the Winter Texans contribute over $3 million to our local economy," states Probst. 4

housands of feathered species make their home along the shores of the Lone Star State. Each year, more than 450 bird species fly to and around the great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.
WHOOPING CRANE
With plenty of marsh land and warmer temperatures, the Coastal Bend is an ideal location for birds like the Whooping Crane, Sand Hill Crane, Brown Pelican and Blue Heron to call home year-round for a season. For the tallest bird in North America, the Coastal Bend area is its winter destination.
“Texas is truly the ancestral home of the modern Whooping Crane. When the bird’s population dropped to below 20 in the 1940s, every single Whooping Crane on earth was right here in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. These birds found their salvation in Texas and we believe that they’ll continue to be saved from extinction by Texans who care about them,” said Anna Turkett, Whooping Crane Outreach Coordinator for the International Crane Foundation in Rockport. An estimated 504 Whooping Cranes of a total of 849 in the world are expected to winter in Texas this year. Whooping cranes stand nearly five-feet tall with a wingspan between seven and eight feet. in Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada then migrates to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge to winter. “Texas offers them a magnificent winter home to raise their chicks, those chicks are all hatched at the Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada. Whooping Cranes do not nest in Texas. Their migratory nature means they need wetland habitat and protection in Texas, Canada and all along their migration route from Saskatchewan through the central flyway down to Kansas, Oklahoma and arriving in south Texas,” Turkett said. The endangered Whooping Crane is the rarest of the cranes and among the oldest living bird species. The migratory flock from Canada is the only wild flock that returns annually to its winter home. To celebrate these special winter Texans, a Whooping Crane Festival is held each year at Port Aransas & Mustang Island. The festival features guided tours, bird watching, cruises and other special events. The 25th Annual Whooping Crane Festival will be Feb. 24-27, 2022. For information, go online to whoopingcranefestival.org. Turkett encourages Coastal Bend residents to maintain a high quality, undisturbed marsh and prairie habitat for the unique bird. “All of us in the Coastal Bend can help the birds by conserving our water usage and valuing our natural landscape. You can also support and follow the International Crane Foundation,” she said. The International Crane Foundation Team includes Dr. Liz Smith, North America Programs Director and Senior Whooping Crane Scientist; John Pistone, Leiden Conservation Whooping Crane Biologist; and Turkett. All are devoted to working with partner organizations to help ensure the Whooping Cranes remain part of the Coastal Bend wildlife by fostering a passion for Whooping Cranes and conducting scientific research and monitoring that leads to conservation action. Whooping Cranes live at least 22 years and sometimes as long as 40 years.
SAND HILL CRANE
The Sand Hill Crane also is seen along the coast and protected from hunting in the Corpus Christi area.
The Sand Hill Crane flies in flocks of two to hundreds. Their legs are extended beyond the tail while in flight and they have a slow wingbeat. Their long neck is extended straight forward. They have a wingspan of five feet. Though gray with dark wingtips, the Sand Hill Crane may appear white when seen in flight.
BROWN PELICAN
Another popular bird in the area is the Brown Pelican. This spectacular bird is a favorite to watch fly across the water in search of a meal. The Brown Pelican soars (continued on page 12)

over coastal waters then plunges headfirst grabbing a fish. With a fresh meal in his large bill, the Pelican tilts its head down to drain extra water out, then tosses its head back to swallow. They can fly just above the water surface or can dive from as high as 60 feet. This species was endangered in the 1970s. Thanks to conservation efforts, today there is an abundance of the Brown Pelican in the United States. According to audubon.org, the oldest recorded Brown Pelican lived to be 43 years old. The Brown Pelican can be seen yearround and often are in large groups.

The American White Pelicans may be spotted along the Coastal Bend but are not as common as the Brown Pelican. The White Pelican has white and black wings, large head and huge, heavy bill. They often work together to corral fish to shallow areas and are even known to steal food from each other and fishermen. The oldest know White Pelican was at least 23 years, six months old and was banded in North Dakota in 1983.

BLUE HERON
The largest of the North American herons’ species is the Blue Heron. In Texas, the largest colonies are found in the forested east inland region and on the coastal islands. The birds breed in late January to late August. With a length of 38.2 to 53.9 inches and a wingspan of up to 79.1 inches, this highly adaptable bird can feed at or away from water. They wade slowly, looking much like a statue as they stalk fish and other pray in the shallow water or open fields. Once their catch is spotted, they thrust their neck and head with lightening speed, stabbing the prey with their strong, dagger like bills. According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Blue Heron breeding plumes were in high demand from 1860-1901. The plumes were used to adorn women’s hats.
GREEN HERON
The Green Heron is the most widespread of Texas Herons, though not much data has been collected for the species. This bird is a common summer resident throughout the eastern two-thirds of Texas. They are more common in inland wetland areas than along the coast. They primarily are seen from early March to July. In the winter months, they are not often seen along the coast.
ROSEATE SPOONBILL
From March through October, Roseate Spoonbills make their home along the Gulf Coast. In winter, they migrate to Central and South America. Like the Blue Heron, the Roseate Spoonbill was nearly hunted to extinction during the 1800s. Its beautiful plumage with striking pink feathers were a popular accessory to women’s hats. This bird grows to a height of 32 inches with an average wingspan of 50 inches. They have a pink body and legs, white neck and breastplate, pale green bald head, spoon-shaped bill and bright red shoulder patch. The Roseate Spoonbill eats mainly small fish and crustaceans. Unlike most birds, these birds are silent
and often eat alone. They are monogamous and their mating season in Texas is during the months of March, April, May, June and July.
OSPREY
A bird of prey, the Osprey appears ready for the hunt. The mostly white head is marked with a black mask extending from the back corner of the eyes through the cheek area and to the sides of the neck. The rest of its body is dark brown to nearly black with solid white on the under parts of the body. The Osprey winters primarily along the Texas Gulf Coast and southern Mexico. The bird tends to fly alone, only pairing with another during mating season. Its nest can be as high as 200 feet above the ground. Its primary diet consists of various fish. The Osprey hovers in a figure-eight pattern over the water, then dives into the water capturing its prey with its long talons. It carries its meal a considerable distance before dining. These are just a few of the feathered species seen around the Coastal Bend. The coastal area offers a variety of well-known birding sites from Kingsville and Corpus Christi to Goliad and continuing through Port Aransas, Rockport-Fulton and Bay City. The Texas Coastal Bend Regional Tourism Council website, txcoastalbend.org, offers information on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Details for the Great Texas Birding Classic can be found at tpwd.texas.gov. This is the biggest, longest birdwatching tournament in the United States. According to the website it is for birders of all ages and levels of experience. There are a variety of tournament categories from the backyard birder to the competitive lister. Registration fees raise money for conservation grants. rom late fall thru winter should be some of the best fishing of the season, clear water, low tides and cooler temps will get those big fish biting. Go to artificials will be corky’s in pink or chartreuse worked slowly around points and grass flats, soft plastics in plum or white with an 1/8 ounce jig head should do the trick. Live bait of choice will be shrimp under popping corks or finger mullet using a carolina rig pulled slowly along grass edges or drop off points. When the flats start warming up midday, the reds will turn on, so cut mullet or crab tossed in

potholes will bring a solid bite. If you’re lucky enough to find a school of tailing reds try throwing a weedless spoon or white swim bait in front of them and hold on. Flounder fishing will be on hold till mid December as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has closed the fishery to help recoup some numbers. So, be sure to let any go that you catch. Be sure to keep some dead shrimp around just in case you run across a school of drum. They are fun to catch and make a great meal. Stay warm, stay safe and always be aware of your surroundings out there. Good luck and tight lines everyone.

he housing market continues to be strong in the South region of the United States, including the Coastal Bend. “I’ve never seen it like this,” said Michelle Weigand of Coldwell Banker Pacesetter Steel. A realtor for 26 years, she said she has never been so busy. She attributes part of that to the low interest rates. “When I started, people could see interest rates at 13 percent for a mortgage and I’ve had people see as low as 2.75 percent. That is a huge change. It makes it more affordable.” (continued on page 18)

But, Weigand said she is seeing prices of homes starting to stabilize, something she sees as a positive. “We need prices to be affordable for a range of buyers,” she said. “It is great for everybody to be a homeowner.” According to the Corelogic Home Price Index, the last year saw the largest increase in home prices in 45 years. Higher prices make homeownership less accessible for some first-time homebuyers. However, millennials are reaching peak homebuying years. Sales in the South region, including the Coastal Bend, increased. For the Coastal Bend area, prices and cost per square footage continued to increase in 2021 compared to the last two years, according to statistics from realtor.com. Port Aransas saw the highest percentage of increase with all of the local markets reporting a marked uptrend. Per census.gov, the 2020 census showed an increase in population across Aransas Pass, Portland, Ingleside, Port Aransas and Rockport-Fulton. Trends in the work environment are proving positive for local cities. As many employees have the opportunity to work remotely, they can choose where to call home. “My husband and I moved here from the Fort Worth area,” said Rockport-Fulton resident Kerrie Huffman. kendra@kendrawray.com “We love the water, the sound of the waves, the smell of the ocean and, most of all, fishing.” That is common said Weigand. “I recently sold a home to a couple from Nebraska. That’s a good sign for property owners. Data from airdna.com, shows that active rentals in Rockport- Fulton increased from 300 active rentals in the third quarter of 2018 to 1,103 in the third quarter of 2021. Though 2020 reflected drops as the nation was in the midst of the COVID pandemic, the vacation rental industry should go back to similar or better overall numbers. In 2019, properties in Port Aransas, RockportFulton, Ingleside, Aransas Pass and Portland had occupancy rates above 45 percent. Average annual revenue ranged from $22,612 to $23,601. The average nightly rate ranged from $165 to $179. For people looking to buy a home, Weigand’s advice to them is to consider using a local lender who knows the area and is available to meet and answer questions. She also said that “sellers are getting multiple offers, meaning four or more. Buyers need to be prepared to put in a good offer and have their financing in order.” If considering selling a home, she said to be reasonable with pricing, prepare the home and seek the help of a realtor who can provide advice on issues to address that will help with the return on investment. Last month, Freddie Mac predicted that the singlefamily housing market would remain strong and
steady through the remainder of the year and into the next. Chartered by Congress in 1970, Freddie Mac operates as a secondary mortgage market. As they buy loans from approved lenders, those lenders provide more loans to qualified borrowers. This keeps capital flowing into the housing market. In its quarterly forecast, Freddie Mac stated that the housing market would continue its steadfast stance despite rising prices and interest rates. “Despite some obvious headwinds, the housing market remains strong as the economy grows,” said Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater in an Oct. 15 news release. “Even as mortgage rates are expected to increase and home prices continue to rise, homebuyer demand remains steady as inventory issues have slightly improved.” According to Fannie Mac, home sales are expected to reach 6.8 million by the end of the year. That number is up slightly from 6.5 million in 2020. They predict home sales to remain flat in 2022. Prices have increased by 11.3 percent in 2020 to 16.9 percent in 2021. The prediction is for that to slow to 7 percent in 2022. In the time since the beginning of the global pandemic, demand for housing grew, sparked by low interest rates and work from home opportunities. It has been a seller’s market as the supply of homes has been greater than the demand. It still is but that could be changing.

WHOOPING CRANE MIGRATION UNDERWAY WHOOPING CRANES AND OTHER MIGRATING BIRDS RETURN TO THE ROCKPORT-FULTON AREA
R
ockport-Fulton, Texas (November 2021) – From November to March more than 500 Whooping Cranes, North America’s tallest bird, call the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and the surrounding area their winter home. The communities of Rockport and Fulton embrace this phenomenon with boat tours and other viewing opportunities. Classified as an endangered species in 1967, the wild flock numbered only 15 in the 1940s. The current population is close to 600. A Whooping Crane pair will mate for life. Each year, pairs or families of Whoopers make their way from the marshes of Southern Canada and the Northern U.S. traveling over 2,500 miles to the Texas Gulf Coast. Nesting in the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, they can be spotted from time to time as far south as along Goose Island State Park. The marsh in this area offers an excellent habitat for the Whooping Crane, providing Blue Crabs, which is the number one food source for the Whooping Crane, along with an abundance of wolfberries and other food sources. Standing over 5-feet tall, with a 7-foot wingspan, the majestic Whooping Crane is the tallest North American bird. Land viewing of the birds can be done at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, recently named the number one “Best place for birding in the United States” according to USA Today’s 10Best. Located just 30-40 minutes from the Rockport-Fulton area, the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is a major attraction for the area. The International Crane Foundation now houses an office in Rockport. The Texas Program is operated by Senior Whooping Crane Scientist, Dr. Liz Smith and her colleagues. According to Dr. Smith, “One of the primary goals of the Texas Program is protecting the coastal habitat for wintering Whooping Cranes, which
22
is critical for the species. There are quite a few other animals who make use of this habitat too, including lots of herons, Sandhill Cranes, wild hogs, and alligators.” Boat Birding Tours are available from Fulton Harbor. Captain Tommy Moore, who operates the “Skimmer” tour boat at Fulton Harbor, says “We had a late migration this year. The first birds were noted on November 8. It was reported that a record number of Whooping Cranes made a stopover on the Platt River in central Nebraska. Although we have seen 5-6 pairs already this season, it is not uncommon to see 10-15 pairs once the season is in full force. Of the birds we are seeing this season, we are seeing a lot of babies, with varying degrees of adult plumage.” Other migrating birds have also made their way into the area. Moore states that they have spotted a Bald Eagle which is rare for this area. Oystercatchers are abundant and large American White Pelicans can be seen feeding with Egrets and other species. Rosette Spoonbills can be seen in the marshes and shallow waters, with their right pink plumage is a favorite for sightseers and photographers. Moore adds “We are officially in open season and making trips into the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Scheduled trips continue through the end of March. We are excited to see the increased numbers of avid birders coming in this year. We are looking forward to a great season” The tours are professionally narrated, and binoculars are available for an up-close view. These trips generally last three hours with an average 30-60 species of birds and other animals spotted along the way. Some area professional fishing guides also offer birding boat tours by appointment. For a list of these operators or for more information on birding, other area attractions, and places to stay in the RockportFulton area, visit www.rockport-fulton.org or call the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center at (361) 729-6445.
