More than 50 years ago, Clarence Herbert Newton and his son William purchased 40 acres of land around Mares Pond in Falmouth. They soon began to develop homes on the parcel that would launch C.H. Newton Builders, Inc. Many people who saw the completed homes were so enamored with what the duo had built, they turned to them for customized home construction, historic design, remodeling and additions as well as their own spec homes for investment purposes.

Today, David Newton, Clarence’s grandson, carries on the family’s legacy and the company remains a cornerstone in the Cape and Islands building community. Newton continued to build up the company alongside his father William Newton, when he joined the family business in 1985.

With over 50 solid and successful years of experience, the team at C.H. Newton Builders has worked on homes of all shapes, sizes, and styles from traditional to very modern. Some of Cape Cod’s best-preserved historic buildings including the Old Indian Meeting House in Mashpee, the Shaker Barn at the Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich, the 1810 federalstyle home Katherine Lee Bates House on the village green in Falmouth, retain their remarkable beauty thanks to skillful renovations undertaken by C.H. Newton Builders.

The company’s state of the art, 20,000-square-foot mill shop, staffed with some of the Cape’s most talented craftsmen, ensures that most any custom aspect of a project can be completed on time and on budget. C.H. Newton Builders do an extensive amount of historic restoration and the mill shop allows the staff to duplicate any wooden features making many of Cape Cod’s historic buildings unique. Clients building new homes can have almost any wish fulfilled as well, from custom staircases to eyecatching cabinetry; the craftsmen at C.H. Newton Builders have almost no limit to what they can accomplish.

Newton believes that to have a successful project, it helps to work with an architect. “We know how to build beautiful homes and the architects know how to design them. It’s a team effort and everyone has their own areas of expertise,” says David.

Without an architect, “A piece of the puzzle would be missing,” Newton notes. For clients on the fence about hiring an architect, Newton shares his portfolio of past projects that have featured some of the Cape’s finest architects. The distinctive work speaks for itself.

Recently, Newton and his crew completed a waterfront home in Woods Hole where everything came together perfectly. The clients knew exactly what they wanted, the project’s architect designed a plan that fulfilled the customer’s needs, and the team at C.H. Newton Builders put the plan into action and built the family a dream home.

From bottom to top, the house features a stone veneer foundation, flared details at the base, custom mahogany windows and doors, a stone and board-formed concrete exterior, uniquely patterned stone chimney, and durable Alaskan yellow cedar shingles. “It’s an heirloom that will be with the family for generations,” says Newton.

C.H. Newton Builders recently welcomed a fourth-generation into the fold. After graduating from Boston College David’s son Ryan worked as an insurance underwriter in New York City for a Fortune 500 company where he honed his business skills. After three years in the industry Ryan

returned to the Cape earlier this year, and now assists in estimating, sales and marketing, and project management.

His father is definitely proud of his son, but it doesn’t sound like Dad is ready to leave the business anytime soon, “I love going to work every morning and building these beautiful homes for these wonderful people,” he says, noting that the company is looking forward to celebrating it’s 55th anniversary this coming September.
