My little Grey Fergie experience started in the early summer of 1983. I was in the employ of Dowdeswell Engineering as area representative for East Anglia and South East England. I was, on this occasion, demonstrating a four furrow reversible lough on a hop garden near Goudhurst in Kent. The field had been cleared of hops and all the paraphernalia that goes with hop growing, poles and wires etc;. everything except the anchors for the guy lines which were buried below the surface and got hung up in the plough. After what turned out to be a successful demonstration a deal was struck between the farmer and the dealer, and the plough was left on the farm.

While working on the farm I had noticed an open fronted shed with several Fergie ploughs in it. I approached the farmer as to whether he would be willing to sell me a two furrow plough. He said he would let me have one for £75.00, I said this was more than I could afford. He asked how much I could afford, to which I replied I had £25.00 about my person. I was then shown to another shed where there was a mountain of Fergie plough parts and was told if I could find enough parts to make up a plough I could have them for £25.00. I found everything, including the parts for the headstock, with a serial number plate. The only thing I didn’t have was a furrow wheel spring, they were all broken. I still had to buy most of the nuts and bolts, albeit with 15/16” AF heads. All the parts were cleaned, painted and assembled over the next few weeks to make a half tidy plough.

I now had to find something with which to pull my ‘new’ plough. While looking through the local newspaper I found the very thing, a Fergie TE20 in running order for £250.00. I rung the telephone number and it turned out to be someone I knew, not far from where I live, so I set

off there and then with car and trailer to fetch it. When I arrived the tractor was not in running order; in fact the man had raised a huge blister swinging the handle. We towed it round his yard and finally got it running on two or three cylinders. I told him this would reflect in the price and offered £200.00 which was accepted. I loaded it up and brought it home.

On close inspection, it was a poor little old thing. The radiator was badly damaged and had been repaired with filler, the water pump and cylinder head were both frost damaged and had to be replaced. Oil leaked from every seal possible. The handle and quadrant for raising

and lowering the lift arms were bent and twisted beyond repair, the main hydraulic cross shaft was twisted, making one upper lift arm higher than the other. Thirty eight years on it’s still like that. The three point linkage was much worn and very bent. The wings were rusty so I took these to Dowdeswell’s works at Stockton to have them shot blasted. I said to the chap doing them, “go a bit easy on them, they are a bit tender”. When I went to collect them they looked like cobwebs. They would now fail the magnet test.

On the positive side, I now have a 1947 Fergie TE20 with a continental engine, a fairly early serial number of 3539 and with the assistance of Mr. Poppewell, an age related number plate, CAS 215.

Over the years everything that’s needed repairing or replacing has been done. Genuine new 10x28 rear Goodyear tyres were acquired for £30.00, don’t ask. Front 400x19 tyres off a tractor that was mounted on a Standen sugar beet harvester in exchange for a Ransomes SCN mouldboard. The six volt battery was replaced with a twelve volt dry cell battery, the regulator box and ignition coil were changed to twelve volt, but the six volt dynamo and starter motor were retained and have worked trouble free for many years. I expect that’s now put the mockers on them, I now have a fairly respectable little tractor, but dread to think how much has been spent on it over

the years I’ve owned it. The tractor and plough are used each year to compete in about ten ploughing matches, with limited success. I have been banned from the Ferguson ploughing classes because I have modified the plough. The tractor is fitted with a quick entry top link, a levelling lever on the left hand lift rod. The plough has a weight, depth wheel and a non-Ferguson front furrow width adjuster. I guess Mr Ferguson will be looking down at all this in complete disgust. “Sorry Harry”.

I was very interested in Duncan Russell’s tribute to Harry Ferguson at the 1994 Royal Norfolk Show in the spring 2021 Journal. As the area rep for Dowdeswell I was at this event. It was a magnificent exhibition and a credit to Duncan for bringing together so many of Harry Fergusons’s innovations. I thought a bit of old bull shine wouldn’t go amiss here, because among Duncan’s many interests he judges ploughing matches and it might secure a better result at some of my competitions, ah well, dream on. I seem to remember at this show a breakaway group of Ferguson Club members trying to promote a new Ferguson club, telling everybody the present Club wouldn’t survive Although I think the Ferguson Club was going through a bit of a sticky patch at the time it obviously has survived and gone on to be very successful.

THE “BRICKYARD FOWLER” AT MARKET LAVINGTON, WILTSHIRE

It has been a long time since the infant teacher at Market Lavington School, ‘Mrs. Elisha’ (Helena May Potter) commented about the Market Lavington Brick and Tile Works:

‘Hundreds of bricks were made there – handmade ones too. A big traction engine driven by Mr. George Brown of West Lavington hauled three big trailer loads. Every other day for a long time the engine hauled its three loads of bricks to Upavon which was then called Upavon Central Flying School… The engine was powerful but often had to do a shuttle service on steep hills returning to the village about 6 pm ready to use the next day for loading.’

The steam engine mentioned was delivered to the owners of the Brickworks, Holloways Bros of West Lavington. It was delivered to the Brickyard on 31st December 1900, and was known locally as the “Brickyard Fowler”.

The engine referred to by ‘Mrs. Elisha’ was built by John Fowler of Leeds and was a large B5 steam road locomotive, having eight nominal horsepower and weighing about seventeen tons. It was the only traction engine the Brickworks owned from 1900 to 1935.

Holloway Bros was a leading building and heavy civil engineering company, which was family-owned through several generations, and based in London. Local contracts included providing the bricks for the Lavington Viaduct between Market Lavington and West Lavington, the original Central Flying School, and Officers’ Quarters (including the Mess) at Upavon between 1912 and 1916 and parts of Marlborough College.

long and 40 feet high Viaduct and Upavon were delivered by the Brickyard Fowler.

To supply bricks for the company’s London projects, which included Streatham Pumping Station (1894), Admiralty Building - Horse Guards Parade (1898), Central Criminal Court – Old Bailey (1900-1907), Whiteley’s department store, the Bank of England (1924-1942), and Chelsea and Wandsworth Bridges

(in the 1930s), the local Lavington Station, located close to Little Panell, was used and the bricks were hauled there from the Brickworks by the engine.

The Brickyard Fowler spent all it’s 35-year working life at the Market Lavington Brickworks, until the mid-1930s. Afterwards, it stood derelict in Dorset, Somerset, and finally Hertfordshire.

Mr. Tom Paisley of Holywell, Huntingdonshire, bought the engine for preservation from the scrapyard of A. G. Evans of Wigginton in the early 1960s, and she was given the name ‘Lord Roberts’ by him on completion of her first major restoration.

Between 1980 and 2015, Mr. John Bailey of Borough Green in Kent owned the engine, and she underwent a

very precise and meticulous second restoration, which is the condition she is seen in today.

Almost 125 years after the Brickyard Fowler was delivered new, she will return to her working-life home and attend this year’s Market Lavington Vintage Meet which will take place at Elisha Field, Drove Lane, Market Lavington, Devizes SN10 4NT on 20th & 21st July 2024. It will be a

This popular event in aid of Wiltshire Air Ambulance and local community projects will have displays of vintage and classic cars/vans/motorcycles/commercial vehicles and tractors, military vehicles, stationary engines, miniature and full-size steam engines and a miniature train for kids to ride on. Several car clubs will be having club stands. Wiltshire Air Ambulance fund raising team will be with us as well as Wiltshire Police and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. We will have a static display of birds of prey from KandH Falconry, who will also be doing a flying demonstration in the arena on both days. There will be gun dog demonstrations in the arena from BASC. A fun dog show will take place in the arena on Sunday. There will be numerous trade and craft stalls as well as demonstrations and collectables. Several catering outlets will provide a

delicious range of food and Botanico bars will be providing beer, wines, and spirits from their converted classic 1976 VW bay window camper van. Children's entertainment will be a bouncy castle, swing carousel and fun house. We have again applied to the RAF for a flypast by aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Red Arrows.

The day after the event on Monday 22nd July Lord Roberts will visit the Old Brickworks for a photo opportunity. Then she will follow a very familiar route, which she would have taken regularly, from the Brickworks to Lavington Station Hotel, currently called The Chocolate Poodle, for another photo opportunity.

Springtime Road Run

The Springtime Road Run organisers Andrew Holden and Roger Perry were very fortunate. The run was held on Saturday 24th February and the preceding days had been extremely wet, leaving roads flooded and low lying fields under water. Yet the day of the run saw glorious sunshine, a foretaste of spring.

The run was centred on an area of rolling dairy farming countryside to the west of Stafford. Indeed, the start was at Wells Dairy Farm, Bradley. The run at a little under 20 miles, was unusual in that it started with an off-road section running to the east of the farm. A loop saw the convoy heading westwards to the village of Church Eaton. Passing the 12th century Saint Editha's church, they then ran alongside the Shropshire Union Canal to head eastwards, past Longnor Hall to the halfway stop at the Swan Inn at Whiston. Suitably refreshed the tractor drivers continued heading eastwards to Penkridge. Finally heading westwards again to Mitton and past Shredicote Hall brought them back to Bradley. The convoy of 41 tractors completed the run without any problems.

The run was in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association charity and raised over £1200.

Advertised locally there were a surprising number of spectators along the route supporting the event. Everyone said what an enjoyable day they had thanks to the hard work of Andrew and Roger.

Dumfriesshire and Kirkcudbrightshire Ploughing Association held their Open Championship Ploughing Tournament on 4th November 2023 at Foregirth Farm, Duncow, Dumfries.

Whilst many matches at that time had been cancelled due to waterlogged fields, this match went ahead on floodplain land provided by the Slaven family. The field had drained good soil and made for a perfect day.

Special thanks went to the Currie family, James Gordon (Engineers) Ltd, Kenneth Wyllie, John Kerr & family, James Rodan & son, Lloyds Dumfries for providing trophies and sponsorship.

Vale of Glamorgan Ploughing & Hedging Society Annual Ploughing Match 2024

The Vale of Glamorgan Ploughing and Hedging Society held its first meeting of the year on Thursday 8 February, at the Six Bells Inn, Penmark. The chairman, John Thomas of Gileston Farm, welcomed all present and informed the members that the 2024 ploughing match will be staged on Sunday 8 September at Great House Farm, Llanmaes, Llantwit Major CF61 2XR, by kind permission of the Thomas family.

Entries for all events must be sent to the Secretary on or before Monday 26 August. This will enable the printers to be able to include all entries in the programme for all events, as follows:

• Horse ploughing – Demonstration. Appearance money will be paid to those who finish their plot.

• Ferguson T20 Class -Tractors and ploughs produced from 1946 to 1956. Ferguson Rules will apply. Winner to receive the Ferguson Welsh Open Challenge Trophy.

• High Cut Class

• Open Vintage Trailer

• Open Vintage Hydraulic

• Open Vintage Hydraulic (Novice)

• Classic Class

• Junior Classic Class

• World Style (2 Furrow Conventional)

• Conventional Multi-Furrow

• Commercial Reversible

• Beginners Class – all types

All winners will receive place cards and prize money.

There is every possibility that a couple of Steam Engines with ploughs and implements will be seen working again this year.

The list of this year’s judges will be recorded at the next meeting.

The event will start at 10.00am and a big welcome will be extended to the public and supporters. An event such as this depends a great deal on the support of patrons and sponsors and long may it continue. Thanks must be given to the field staff and stewards who give their time to support this one-day event, so that the visiting public can learn something about ploughing through the ages and the skill of those taking part on the field.

If any of the Vintage Tractor clubs wish to display their collections at the event there will be space provided. If interested, please contact the Secretary, Sarah Radcliffe on 07855 414759, by 26 August.

There is a move to change the name of the Society, dropping the reference to “Hedging” which has arisen due to the lack of support for hedging competitions over the past couple of years.
