Welcome to the July/August issue of The Vintage Scene.

I

expect you have been wondering what had happened to us! Apologies for the delay; a shortage in staff put the pressure on, resulting in us missing an issue. Any subscriptions will not suffer because of this skip of an issue, an extra issue will simply be added to the end of each subscription. Fingers crossed, we appear to be back on track now. The most appealing aspect of my job, is that I get to talk to some lovely and interesting characters. One such character, we were very saddened to learn, passed away on Monday 30th May, after a tragic road traffic incident close to his home on the A30 in Cornwall. Thomas Andrews, and his wife Elizabeth, were returning home after spending the weekend at the Launceston Vintage Rally. This was their first rally since Covid began. Andrew’s daughter, Vivienne, told me “he had a fantastic weekend before t he accident, doing everything he loved”. We will feature a full obituary in the near future. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Andrew’s family at this very sad time. He will be missed by many. It is lovely to see so many events taking place and being so well supported, following the two year ‘Covid’ break. We have a variety of reports in this issue, including road runs which have been raking in impressive amounts of money for their charitable causes. Don’t forget, we love to receive your stories, with a view to putting them into print. Whether it is a tractor, combine, steam engine, stationery engine, car, bike or heavy horse email it across to h.dodd@vintagescene.co.uk Till next time, see you in September,

Heather

One of My BetTer Purchases! by Harry Semmence, a member of The Ferguson Club

write this sat looking out at the garden during a very dry April. We could desperately do with a drop of rain, having had no significant rainfall for some time. Winter seems a distant memory now. However, always looking for an excuse to utilise the Ferguson system my thoughts turned to processing some firewood.

I

Having been keen to get a Fergie sawbench for some time, a chance purchase from eBay re-ignited these thoughts. A very nice leaflet with the Dealer stamp of ‘Boggis of Halesworth’ was purchased, depicting an early sawbench with Fergie trailer and a very jolly looking chap obviously very pleased with his purchase. I realised now how much I needed to own one, however I had the final obstacle to overcome, convincing Mrs S of the virtues of such an addition to the collection. Fortune must have been on my side as she either wasn’t listening or she understood what a wise purchase this was for us to make and seemed fully committed to the project! With permission sought, I trawled the internet and tractor magazines. As luck would have it, through a chance conversation, I found exactly what I was looking for, not too far away at a reasonable price. Once back home, I could take stock of what I had bought. It’s a later Massey Ferguson model in nice condition. It came with a belt, although this is too long and needs replacing. A farm spec modification has been made to enable adjustment to tighten the belt. The previous owner had fitted some extra guarding which was also a nice touch, so far so good. Everything turned freely by hand, so I decided to fit it up to a tractor and give it a run up. A dig around in the depths of the shed revealed a Ferguson belt pulley, so now it was just a case of hitching up. With a little persuasion, the sawbench was duly hitched up to my 1948 Fergie TEA20. With the belt tensioned, we were in business and it was time for the moment of truth. Now I have to admit, at this point I was rather nervous of the fearsome spinning wheel of death I had just fitted onto my tractor. So, it was with some trepidation I slipped the PTO into gear and gently let out the clutch. With a whirr we were off, leaving the engine ticking over I listened out for any odd noises or grumbles. All sounded good, so now I was feeling rather pleased with myself. During the storms, several hedgerow trees had been damaged and fallen across the fence of a rented paddock. This was the perfect excuse to try out my new toy. The chainsaw made light work of the field maple. I trimmed all the smaller branches and brushed into a pile, and stacked the thicker wood next to the tractor ready for processing. After making sure to clear the work area from trip hazards, I ran the saw up and started to make my way through the pile, the blade zipped through the wood with ease. With an explosion of sawdust, the blade ate through the wood and the lengths of timber were soon reduced to a nice pile of logs perfect size for splitting. With the logs cut, it was now time to get out the Fergie transport box to cart them back the shed. Other than the use of the chainsaw, all tasks were completed by the 4

Another implement ticked off the list and whilst on a roll perhaps another purchase is in order…. until next time keep on a-trosh’n.

Ferguson crosSes alL frontiers.! supplied by Henry Pirie, a Member of The Ferguson Club

O

n Saturday the 24th June 2017, five Ferguson Club members gathered in the village of Pitmedden in Aberdeenshire with their tractors ready for a short road run to the nearby town of Ellon, where they had been invited to put on a small display for the annual charity fund raising day of the Ellon Fire Station and the Police Station. In the line up were Sandy Simpson with his 1947 TE 20 continental, Bob Shepherd and Douglas Scott, each with their TE-F’S, and Bill Beaton with his 1957 FE35, and lastly me, Henry Pirie with my TE-F towing a trailer loaded with my 1949 TE-D. As we set off on our short six mile journey, Edith filmed our departure for an item on the Ferguson Club’s facebook page, which is a great medium for keeping the Ferguson name in the limelight. We were making good progress when halfway there we were overtaken by a motorhome, which promptly pulled into a lay-by right in front of us and out stepped a nice young lady who flagged us down. Not sure what to expect I opened the cab door, and here she was holding a picture of their beautifully restored grey/gold FE35. In spite of the language barrier, mostly on my part, I explained where we were bound for and invited them to tag along. Once more we set off, but this time with a motorhome bringing up the rear. On arrival at the venue we got all set up and had a lovely time with our new-found friends, who, as we discovered were on a touring holiday in Scotland and were from Luxembourg. The lovely couple spent a very enjoyable few hours with us, showing lots of photos of their tractors and also taking many photos of this memorable occasion. I believe they also managed to get photos of the pipe band, much to their delight. Before they left, we told them that the Ferguson Club stand was going to a rally tomorrow (Sunday) at Stonehaven, south of Aberdeen and invited them to join us there. As Sunday dawned a nice sunny morning, I set off with the trailer again, but with the van towing it now for the longer 30 mile journey to Stonehaven, where we met up with Gladys Lindsay accompanied by Sharon and Emma, with the Club stand. With many willing helpers we soon had the stand up and running and the kettle on the boil, when, true to their word, our new-found friends from Luxembourg appeared. We spent a lovely few hours in their company and they bought quite a few items of merchandise from Gladys as souvenirs of their Scottish holiday. Before they left us, we exchanged e-mail addresses with the promise to keep in touch, so I am looking forward to learning a bit about the vintage tractor scene in Luxembourg, which we don’t seem to hear much about. Anyway, that ended a fantastic weekend all because of a chance 6

AberdeEnshire Ploughing Match supplied by Henry Pirie, a member of The Ferguson Club

The gang of five!

O

n the 20th of October, 2012 a group of Ferguson Club members assembled at Dumpston Farm, Longside, near Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, for the annual charity ploughing match organised jointly by the Peterhead Rotary Club and the Buchan Tractor Club.

running sweetly, set off on his opening. After a wee shaky start, he soon got his plough set up to his liking and although he hadn’t ploughed for many years, he made a very respectable job of his rig, considering the ground conditions.

The day dawned nice and clear, and turned out one of the best days we have had for quite a while. However, conditions underfoot were pretty horrendous, with some of the ploughmen having to change rigs or give up. The group consisted of two double furrow ploughs both on Ferguson TEF tractors and driven by Bill Beaton and Douglas Scott, and three single furrow ploughs attached to two TEF tractors and one TEA; these being driven by Bob Shepherd, Bob Mitchell and Henry Michie.

On the next rig to Henry was another of our club members, Bob Shepherd, also with a single furrow plough, who produced some fine ploughing and got a third prize for his effort, and this, his first go at competition ploughing; well done Bob. At the prize-giving ceremony, Henry was the centre of attention because of the distance travelled, and was presented with a bottle of whisky by the Committee for his participation in the event; this left him slightly embarrassed, but highly honoured.

Mr Michie is one of our valued Club members from Australia where he emigrated nearly 40 years ago and has been a member for several years. When he got in touch with some of our local members to say he was coming over for a few weeks holiday during October, the wheels were set in motion to arrange a surprise for Henry. As several Club members were already involved in raising sponsorship money for this event. Unbeknown to Henry, we got in touch with the organisers and they were absolutely delighted to have a participant from “down under”.

As part of their fundraising weekend, the Rotary Club also organised a Scottish Ceilidh evening in Peterhead on Sunday night. This was an event that Henry wanted to attend. Here he was singled out by the compere, Mr. Robert Lovie, a local entertainer and recording artiste. Henry was introduced to the entire audience as a visitor from Australia! We would like to thank Henry for his participation in all events which made it a memorable weekend for all of us.

The 1948 Ferguson TEA was fuelled up and fitted with a Sellar single furrow plough and transported the 20 miles to the venue ready for the match. When Henry got in touch with us the day before and learned what we had in store for him he was “fair chuffed” and could not wait to get a plough in to his native soil again, especially being pulled by a Ferguson. On the stroke of ten all the tractors were at their rigs, marker poles lined up, and ready for the signal to go. Henry, his tractor already switched over to T.V.O. and Please mention THE VINTAGE SCENE when responding to advertisements

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Is it a car? Is it a truck? Is it a train? No it’s John Steele’s Morris ‘cut-down’. by Willy Carson

B

ack in the 1920s and into the 1930s, tractors were a rarity on small farms in Britain and Ireland. For the more enterprising farmer, wishing to increase efficiency in his field operations, the growing number of expired motorcars offered an alternative. An old Morris ‘Bullnose’ Cowley may have come to the end of its life as transport for the local squire, but providing there was some life left in its mechanical components, it had the potential to become a tractor… of sorts…known among today’s vintage eccentrics as a cut-down; for obvious reasons. The first task in creating such a mechanical marvel was to remove the bodywork rearwards of the scuttle panel and, with the rear chassis exposed; the first modification could be made. For heavy draft use in an agricultural environment the typical British family saloon chassis would have experienced stresses beyond its design specification, but having been built for rougher roads in rural America, the Model T Ford, many of which were long passed their best days by the 1930s, had a stiffer chassis so a cut-and-shut operation was performed adding strength to the basis of this new contraption. The main design differences between early cars and tractors were a result of their required torque characteristics. The car only had to propel, from rest, its own weight and that of its passengers and their luggage. Once this initial task had been performed its power could then be used to accelerate the car to reckless speeds of 40mph and beyond.

8

July/August 2022

The tractor’s job, however, was to drag its own weight, the weight of its driver and his dinner bag, as well as a plough or cultivator as it fought against the resistance of the soil. The secret was to increase the torque available at the back wheels of the tractor by reducing their forward speed while allowing the engine to run at the upper end of its rev. range and so deliver a large proportion of its maximum power. To make this all happen the clever farmer would simply fit a second gearbox between the original ‘box and the rear axle, select a low ratio, fit some suitably agricultural tyres, bolt in the original seat, fix a clevis at the back, attach the old horse plough and then sell the horse.

John Steele is in the driving seat, John McKibbin is sitting on the plough and Robert McKibbin is standing by the plough.

John’s cut-down began life as a Morris light commercial vehicle, before being converted for a new career working in an orchard in Co. Armagh. Shortly after he bought it, the clutch began to show signs of significant wear but since the friction face was made up of a series of cork pads, a home-made repair seemed the obvious option. “I bought a box of corks from a DIY wine makers’ supplier, cut them to size and fixed them to the clutch plate,” explains John, “This worked fine but about three months later the bottom end of the old Morris engine started to knock.” Because of the engine design at the time it was going to be very expensive to repair, so John started to look for another option. He found a 5 cylinder engine in a 1960s Mercedes and fitted that along with its clutch and gearbox. It meant making new engine mountings and a new propshaft, suspension spacers to allow clearance for the sump and then forming a new, longer bonnet and having new side panels fabricated. This being John’s cut-down, it

would need some final modifications, “I had bought an old donkey’s cart previously. It was rough and when we went over to lift it, just as we were dragging it out of the shed where it had been sitting for years, there began a real downpour of hailstones. Karen must not have thought much of my new purchase, because she told me to wait until the hail shower had passed in case the cart disintegrated! I bolted the cart body onto the chassis and fitted a new seat base with one of the greedy boards used as a seat-back. The old back crib was beyond repair so I made a new one and fitted all the original iron fittings. The number plate came with the cart so I screwed it on to add the finishing touch. We take it to working days and plough with a John Deere two furrow steerage plough, which would originally have been pulled by a team of horses.” . John was looking for an old Austin car when he came across the

Austin 10. The mudguards were missing and there was a lot of rot in the bodywork, but he had it running about two hours after he had trailered it home. He took it to a show on New Year’s Day and drove it round the back of the field with a five gallon drum in place of the missing driver’s seat! There was a man there with another Austin 10 which had been really well restored, but it was John’s rough old motor that drew the crowds of onlookers. Maybe they were expecting it to fall apart before their eyes. The bodywork had deteriorated to the point where it wasn’t viable as a restoration project so John decided that, if he couldn’t add value to the car, he would add character. “I wanted to turn it into a pick-up so I cut the roof between the B post and the boot lid. I then cut the top off the two back doors and moved the upper back panel forwards to meet the front section of the roof. I bought mudguards, running boards and seats from a donor car, painted it in matt black and then made the wooden pick-up bed and bolted it in place. It’s perfect for a bit of fun in a show field.” While these two vehicles have gained local celebrity status since John waved his welder in their direction, the third automotive antiquity in this line-up came with established ‘A’ list credentials.

towards the popular end of his range of motor cars with his Austin 7 and Austin 12 of 1922, the Austin 20 was ranked among the most prestigious motors of its day. The prospective owner could add to the kudos of his purchase by ordering a rolling chassis and having it delivered to one of a number of coachbuilders who would add another level of luxury. Options included the Tourer, the Coupé, the Limousine or the Landaulette, the model characterised by its folddown rear hood making it first choice for royalty and the upper echelons of society. John’s 1927 Landaulet has been upholstered with Bedford cord in the place where the important people sit while the driver sits on a leather covered seat, indicating that man-made fabrics were considered more exclusive than ‘utility’ leather. Despite all these outstanding historical features, it is the Austin 20’s more recent history which caught John’s attention, “I saw the motor advertised on the internet. It had been used in the filming of the Peaky Blinders TV show and when that finished the owner decided to sell it. It has a more sedate lifestyle now, going for drives to the coast for ice cream.” Less villain and more vanilla you might say. Which is the Good, which the Bad and which the Ugly? Of the three vehicles, the cut-down is Karen’s favourite. As for the Bad and the Ugly...

The Waterworks Museum in Hereford has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in The Queen’s Birthday Honours. he Waterworks Museum at Broomy Hill in Hereford has been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS). This is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

T

The Waterworks Museum was opened in 1974. The museum is one of Herefordshire’s leading visitor attractions. It is wholly run by volunteers. It is, ‘A working museum which makes the story of drinking water spring to life.’ Based in a Grade II* listed building, the Museum is home to the UK’s oldest in-situ working triple-expansion steam engine and it has one of the widest ranges of working pumping engines in the UK. This includes exhibits in The Tangye House, Leominster’s Victorian pumping station and the Rotherwas Engine House, displaying a permanent exhibition of artefacts saved from dereliction from a World War II bunker. The collection is interpreted by a combination of displays, historic artefacts and ephemera related to potable water. Visitors to the Waterworks Museum can see historic beam, steam, gas, oil, diesel and combustion engines, many of which are among the last working example of their kind. The collection primarily relates to drinking water supply in Herefordshire, the Marches and Wales, but also includes items from other parts of the UK. In addition, building on its collection of hot-air engines, the Waterworks Museum has gained a reputation as a repository and centre of knowledge for the operation of machines that provided power for municipal schemes before internal combustion engines. This collection is considered one of the best in the UK. There is also a unique Heritage Water Park with full size working interactive artefacts. The Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, Mr. Edward Harley OBE said “The Waterworks Museum provides a wonderful visitor attraction for Hereford which gives pleasure to a wide range of people including visitors from far afield, Herefordshire residents and their children, enthusiasts and, volunteers. The museum preserves and restores important elements of our local and national heritage. I offer my heartfelt congratulations to all involved in volunteering for this superb organisation. The award is well deserved recognition for the enormous amount of energy and time that all the volunteers give to this excellent museum.”

The museum is one of 244 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. Their work, along with others from across the UK, reminds us of all the ways in which fantastic volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups to benefit their communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Recipients are announced each year on 2nd June, the anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation.

“To receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service after such a very busy and challenging few months for the directors and volunteers is wonderful” said Jill Phillips, The Museum Chair of Trustees. She comments “the vision, drive and determination of the founder members and volunteers has continued through the years and the absolute strength of the museum is the passion and capabilities of those involved. The museum is a very special place to be a volunteer at”. The Waterworks Museum volunteers will receive the Award Crystal and certificate from Mr Edward Harley OBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire in the early Autumn. In addition, two volunteers from the organisation will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2023, along with other recipients of this year’s Award.

Phillip David Edward Thornton 28/6/1946 – 7/10/2021 hillip Thornton passed away aged 74 on October 7th 2021. Phillip was one of eight children born to Edward and Terry Thornton. The family moved houses a number of times as they grew, but always stayed in Burford, Oxfordshire. Before Phillip’s parents retired, Springfield House was the family home.

drainage. It was long hours and weekends were included. Springfield House came with a few acres and outbuildings which housed pigs, geese and ponies. As the family aged, they came together to make several companies doing threshing, ploughing, harvesting and landscaping. The ‘Thorntons’ were one of the first families to own a combine harvester in the area. Phillip had an inquisitive mind for machinery, starting with dissecting typewriters and moving on to farming equipment/machinery. This knowledge of Phillip’s became evident at a summer fete, and a John Deere tractor competition. Entrants had to point out the faults on the John Deere and win a limited-edition John Deere tractor toy. Philip loved this competition, he entered three times, one for each of his daughters. Each entry he would notice more faults! There was much banter between Philip and the owner of the tractor that they had faked some faults! Philip had found more faults than was expected or previously known about!

Philip was a dedicated family man and he would take his family on holidays. Every year, he would come home Friday and hook the caravan up and drive them to the coast. Unpack the caravan and pitch up the awning, and then drive back to work. He would return the following weekend to collect his family, and the caravan. At that time he worked in London. The work was manually digging holes, trenches and shoring up. It was filthy, long, wet, cold, hard days, often seven days a week. The work he was doing would nowadays be done with machines. Phillip became self-employed in groundworks, working in London; it was back-breaking work, all by hand initially. Eventually, Phillip and Margaret decided to become a company calling themselves ‘P & M Thornton’. Again, doing groundworks, foundations and roads, plus

The Thornton daughters gave three grandchildren to Phillip and Margaret. Philip embraced each Grandchild with his usual stoic self, introducing them to a wonderful world of diggers, quads, motorbikes and ponies. Philip started going to steam rallies with his Grandchildren. Even buying an old wreck of an old tipping trailer and renovating it with his Grandson, Adam. They would hang some of the tractor parts up in the shed and spray the metal parts. Phililp retired in 2012 and updated his home, now Blackheath Farm. Phillip had a great drive to push on, that never wavered, simply never stopped doing things. Machinery needed a lot of maintenance, as did the fields. Even when his Cancer was debilitating, he would push through the pain to accomplish yet another task. Phillip is and will be missed greatly by his family and friends.

MILL MEECE GENERAL INTEREST RALLY SUNDAY 19TH JUNE 2022 Report by Barry Job

he Mill Meece Pumping Engine Trust hold a number of events during the rally season, including their 'General Interest Rally', which was held on Sunday 19th June. The venue is a pumping station lying some ten miles to the south of Stoke-on- Trent and its purpose is to supply the 'Pottery' towns with wholesome drinking water.

T

The heart of the site is an engine house containing two horizontal tandem compound steam engines, the first by Ashton Frost was installed in 1914. With the demand for water increasing, a second similar engine by Hathorn Davey was installed in 1928. Between them these engines supplied 5 million gallons of water every day. The site's boreholes still supply water but now by electrically powered pumps. In addition to the engine house is a boiler house, workshops, winch house, weigh bridge and site attendant's dwelling, now used as a cafe. There was a good selection of stationary engines exhibited. The only gas engine, a 1/4hp Stuart, was brought along by Tony Green. Appropriately for the venue; a large number of engines were driving water pumps, including Roy Morris's 1954 Lister D. This was unusual in that it still has the original tube actually containing the instruction manual. The tube is retained by the bolts holding the crankcase inspection

plate in place. When the plate is removed and the tube put to one side, it is easy not to reinstate the tube when the plate is bolted back into place, hence they are rare today. The engine was belted to a Lister piston pump. There has been some discussion on the possible duty of this pump, the fact that it is made of bronze suggests it pumped corrosive liquid, but this has yet to be confirmed. Brian Mellor's Petter Universal was direct coupled to an unusual pump made by Edwinson. An Amanco Hired Man, brought along by Keith Greatbatch, was driving a Lee Howl piston pump, whilst Dan Ditchburn's Amanco Chore Boy was belted to a Pulsometer impellor pump. A popular pump; the Lister Domestic was exhibited by Tony Stubbs, driven by his Wolseley WD11. Staying on the water theme; Brian Eagles delighted the public with his water display which had overflowing buckets and rotating cups which rang bells. It is called 'Flowers In The Rain', which older enthusiasts will remember was the first record played on Radio 1 in 1968, power was provided by an air cooled BSA engine. The event was well supported by an excellent selection of vintage and classic cars, indeed there was some difficulty finding parking space for all of the cars. The weather was good and the public turned out in good numbers. This is an excellent venue, for more information see the website at www.millmeecepumpingstation.co.uk

Roy Morris' Lister D type was supplied to Goodwin Barsby of Leicester in June 1954 to drive a stone crusher. Here it is driving a Lister pump which, unusually, is made from bronze.

This Stuart 1/4hp gas engine was made in Henley-on-Thames in 1910 and was brought along by Tony Green.

This 1924 Amanco 13/4hp 'Chore Boy' driving a Pulsometer impellor pump was exhibited by Dan Ditchburn.

Keith Greatbatch exhibited his 21/4hp Amanco 'Hired Man' made in Waterloo, Iowa, U.S.A. in 1915.

Brian Mellor brought along two air-cooled engines, here he is starting a Petter 'Universal' which is direct coupled to an Edwinson pump, an unusual manufacturer.

Brian Eagles' 'Flowers In The Rain' water display was particularly innovative and intrigued the public.

The water for the display was provided by a Lister 'Domestic' pump driven by a 1948 B.S.A. E series air cooled engine.

This interesting display of a Bamford hand pump, with water supplied by a Lister 'Domestic' pump powered by a Wolseley WD11 was owned by Tony Stubbs.

which run around a track . If showing the steam powered models, a calm day is required as any wind soon takes heat away from the small boiler. The rally theme for this year are the E27N and MM tractors, Mick having made his interpretation of these in Meccano. Mick made several different models during lockdown, two of which are what every farm should have; a little Grey Fergie and a bow axle Allis B with trailed combine.

Laura’s Tractor Run Report by Charlotte Groves

L

aura's Tractor Run took place on Sunday 15th May and this year a whopping 102 tractors took part. Starting at Hopkins Farm in Tysoe, the route then passed through the villages of Shenington, Shutford, Hook Norton (where a pit-stop was enjoyed at The Gate Hangs High pub), Brailes, Whatcote, Oxhill and finally finishing at the sports field in Tysoe with a raffle, auction, refreshments and food from 'Happy Herefords'. Laura Belcher set up the Tractor Run in 2019 to raise money for two cancer charities. Covid meant that it couldn't take place in 2020, but another successful run took place in 2021, once restrictions had eased, raising

22

money for Cancer Research UK and a local Dementia Cafe. This year, aproximately £6,500 was raised for charity. Laura's chosen charities were Cancer Research UK once again and also a mental health charity, specifically targeted at those in rural areas or living and working on farms. This is the Len Eadon charity https://leneadon.muchloved.com A huge thank you to all who took part. In Laura's words it was a "dream come true" to see such a wonderful turnout. Roll on 2023!

Tern ValLey Spring Tractor Road Run 15th May 2022 by Barry Job n Sunday 15th May, the Tern Valley Vintage Machinery Trust held their spring road run in memory of Gerald Cartwright. Gerald had been a founder member of the Trust in 1979, a Chairman for many years, he was awarded honorary membership in 2020 for his dedication and support to the Trust. He sadly passed away suddenly on 25th March.

O

The 22 mile road run route started at Sydney House Farm, Kynnersley, where breakfast and refreshments were available, courtesy of Richard and Isabelle Moseley. Kynnersley is in a surprisingly rural area in spite of lying only a few miles to the north of the extensive conurbation of Telford. Just prior to the start at 10.30 am a minutes silence was held for Gerald Cartwright, and Peter Johnson then gave the driver's briefing. Then they were off, with Gerry Hobday in the lead. Leaving the farm along an attractive tree lined drive, the convoy essentially followed an anticlockwise route through Edgmond and passed Caynton Mill

on the River Meese, a tributary of the River Tern, to reach the halfway stop at Howle Manor courtesy of Peter Watson-Jones. Unfortunately, on the narrow lanes a breakdown caused the convoy to separate and tractors arrived at Howle Manor in two groups. Suitably refreshed, the tractors travelled via Childs Ercall, Bolas and Cherrington to arrive back at Sydney House Farm where lunch was available and the raffle was drawn. The event made £1250 to be divided between the Tern Valley Trust, the Alzheimer's Society and a charity to be chosen by the Cartwright family. With good weather, everyone agreed that the run had been a great success and a credit to Gerry Hobday and Mike Johnson, the organisers, and the Tern Valley Trust. For further information on the Trust and its activities see their website at www.tvvmt.co.uk

Shanes Castle Steam RalLy By Rebecca Carson he first show of the year! I had been looking forward to the Shanes Castle Steam Rally since Dad said that he had sent off the entry form. The Lister’s magneto had been sitting on the hearth since last autumn, so we refitted it, cleaned the points with some sandpaper and then checked the timing.

T

May 2nd was show day, so we were up early and ready to go at ten past eight. By half past nine we were signed in, the engine was unloaded and it was time to go round the auto jumble. I bought two cans, one Castrol and one Esso and the man gave me a Duckhams grease pot for free. On another stand I found a 5 gallon Agricastrol can, a round one with a cone top. I recognised the dealer from last year’s show and managed to knock him down to half price, and he even gave me a luck penny as well. A crackin’ deal! After the auto jumble we got the Lister started, and Mum and I were off again to go and climb a climbing wall set up by the army - I nearly reached the top! When I landed safe on the ground, Dad was there to say “well done” and ask me if I wanted to see the steam engines; of course I said yes. We talked to Joe Gwynne from Armagh who built his 4” scale (that’s ⅓ scale) Garrett engine. Mick’s Mac, a McLaren engine, was pulling the visitor rides trailer up the hill, there was one engine driving a saw bench and another belted up to a stone crusher.

Jonny Fee from Tamnamore was there with his 16 year old horse, Magic, who was driving a horse walk barn thresher. Addie O’Neill was feeding in the corn sheaves whilst the hen stood on top of the mill in a scene from my great granda’s life. We walked along the lines of classic cars handing out some flyers for my school’s PTA Stationary Engine Crank Up and Classic Cars Show which will be held on the 20th August. We met some friends, including Robert Hoy who was there with his Morris Minor which had been a Metropolitan Police Panda Car. There were DeLoreans and Jags and some pre-war cars, including a Ford Model T and some old Austins who were there to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Austin 7. There were lots of colourful vintage tractors to see, but my favourite was an industrial Massey Ferguson 35. Of course no show in Northern Ireland would be complete without ‘Rambo the tractor driving dog’ who brought his owner, Albert Reid, along for a day out. The Lister never missed a beat all day and we seem to have the spark timing set up better than last year, as it wasn’t running anywhere near as warm. It was starting to rain as we were packing up to go home but it had been great show.
