‘VINTAGE TRACTORS, MACHINERY & SO MUCH MORE!’

Welcome to the February/March issue.

The snowdrops are in full bloom, the daffodils are starting to peep through, and the nights are starting to draw out - spring will soon be here! This issue we see a jam-packed diary, with many days out to plan in the forthcoming months. It is an exciting time of year, with much to look forward to.

We were very saddened to receive news of the death of ploughman, David Williams. He was a familiar figure at the Banbury & District ploughing matches. My family are particularly grateful to him for the support he gave to my nephew, Nathan, when was starting out with a Trusty tractor. Our thoughts are with Dave’s family and friends at this sad time.

Don’t forget, we love to receive editorial from our readers, whether it is an event report, a restoration, or a story about how things were done back in the day. Email these to h.dodd@vintagescene.co.uk

We hope you enjoy this issue of The Vintage Scene, and will be back in early April.

A Day out Muck Spreading

Club

On one wet Sunday, a team from the Ferguson Club Ayrshire muck spreading division, went through to West Lothian to Bathgate to help out Club member Ralph Sibbald empty his midin.

We used four spreaders, one Ferguson spreader with a metal body, a Massey Harris and two Massey Ferguson 712s with wooden bodies.

The serial plates are very interesting on the wooden bodies, as each serial number starts with a letter before the number. We were thinking it was for the factory where they could have been manufactured. Your views are most welcome on serial plates.

Massey Harris serial number - K864 does K mean for Kilmarnock?

Massey Ferguson serial number - Sl2152 does S mean for Stretford Manchester?

Massey Ferguson serial number - Tl2625 does T mean for Trafford Park Manchester?

Tractors that were used on the day were two FE35s, one MF35 4 cylinders, one MF35 3 cylinder and a MF135 with a loader.

All the guys involved had a greal day playing with our full scale toys. and are looking forward to the next day as midin is not fully empty yet.

The Museum of Rural Lancashire Life

Collection of Rural Lancashire OPEN DAY on 17th September 2022

On the 17th of September, we had a open day to raise money for the North-west Air Ambulance. We raised a total of £1150.

The weather was great all day. The ice cream van and John the BBQ volunteer were set up. The 1925 Pianola was set up opposite the army vehicles, some of whom had camped from Friday night.

On the other side of the field, was a vintage tractor and a saw bench log cutter display. Two large stationary engines, belonging to Carl Hargreaves, were also in the field.

In the yard, were working stationary engines and an array of cars. A Ukulele band, and a group playing 1960s music kept people entertained.

My thanks go out to all the volunteers who helped on the day, and all the exhibitors and all the people who attended the Open Day.

Our next open day is Saturday the 15th of April. We have not picked the charity we are raising funds for in April as yet.

Last of the Leafers

The Vintage Scene subscriber, Terry Connelly, talks about his 1984 Series III Land-Rover, one of the last of the leaf spring legends

“Perfection is the child of time,” wrote the 17th century moralist and philosopher, Bishop Joseph Hall. Had he lived during the latter half of the 20th century he could well have been referring to the development the LandRover, a process of many small changes over several decades.

When it was revealed to the motoring press at the Amsterdam Motor show in April 1948, this revolutionary utility vehicle was about to set new standards for ruggedness, versatility and durability. It was initially perceived by Rover as a stop-gap product in the immediate post war years to occupy vacant production facilities, and staff, until the market for the company’s traditionally upmarket cars returned. As such, simplicity in design and construction were more important than matters of style and comfort.

The Land-Rover soon found satisfied customers in markets, both at home and around the world, and buoyed by initial success, the first of many improvements began to appear. In 1951, the engine capacity rose from 1595cc to 1997cc; the 1954 model featured a longer wheelbase, stretched from the original 80in to 86in. Soon, a diesel engine was introduced to the model range and the wheelbase was extended further to 88in. In 1958, the Series II was launched with the characteristic body style which would become so familiar over the next sixty years. In 1971, the Series III was launched; the last Land-Rover with leaf spring suspension, but it did feature many changes designed to improve driveability and comfort, including a fully synchromesh gearbox, ‘better’ cabin heating and ventilation and modern instrumentation and controls in a padded dash. By the mid-1980s, the new coil sprung Land Rover 90 was on its way, but before the Series III was replaced there was one final round of upgrades for the Solihull icon.

About eight years ago, Terry Connelly and his son, Keith, were offered a 1984 Series III as a restoration project,

“It was in rough shape, but I took a battery, connected it up, turned the key and it started. We stripped it completely and, as we suspected, we found that the chassis and the bulkhead were completely rotten. We started with a new chassis and fitted the suspension and then bought a secondhand bulkhead which needed a repair in one corner. John Fleming, a retired diesel fitter and fellow member of the Cloughmills Vintage Club, put an oil pressure gauge on the engine and told us that it was in good condition. He went on to explain what he would do to me if I even thought about stripping it down!”

Terry’s 1984 Series III was built just before the arrival of the new Land Rover 90 (note the disappearance of the hyphen in the new model name) with a build spec which included the five bearing crankshaft, a stepping stone toward the increased output of the 2.5L engine in the later series. Terry set about giving the upgraded powerplant a proper service, including a refurb for the injectors, fitment of a new timing chain and resetting the tappets. Since this entailed removing the sump, he inspected the crank bearings and decided that they were showing signs of wear and so replaced them.

The interior shows Terry’s attention to detail in this restoration project. The 1984 diesel engine was a stepping stone to future developments.

The ABTerry and the LR parked at the pump outside Boyds of Bendooragh where he first worked.S front grille appeared on the Series III models.

The gearbox, fully synchromesh by this stage in LandRover’s ever evolving development, needed a rebuild with a replacement needle bearing for the nose of the output shaft and a new set of synchro rings and seals. Terry and Keith fitted a rebuilt Fairy Overdrive gearbox (a period option) to the already complex drivetrain of these versatile machines to reduce engine revs at normal road speeds and improve fuel economy. A new clutch and pressure plate were fitted before the engine and transmission were bolted together. The axles were stripped and rebuilt, and the prop shafts inspected. Terry believes that his Land-Rover had been used to launch boats into the sea so he wasn’t surprised to find that the Atlantic Ocean had not helped to preserve the sliding joints, necessitating some patient work to make the parts move freely again. To reduce transmission losses, and add a few more miles per gallon, they went looking for a set of freewheeling hubs for the front axle. Since the late Series IIIs were fitted with the front axle from the long wheelbase model with their more powerful brakes, a hub set with the correct spline pattern was

required, but eventually the correct parts were sourced and fitted. The steering box was rebuilt and refitted with a new steering relay in the chassis and new track rod ends. Terry then made new copper brake lines, and fitted them to new master and wheel cylinders and to the factory fitted servo. Problems appeared when the safety valve in the braking system wouldn’t illuminate the dash tell-tale. A closer look revealed that somebody had dismantled the part in the past, but had been careless in reassembling it; just another problem for Terry to solve.

Not everybody is happy to tackle issues with a vehicle’s wiring system, but Terry wasn’t going to be put off by the black snake with brass teeth and many coloured tongues. “I bought a multimeter and then taught myself how to use it, and how the different circuits worked.” He stretched the loom out over an old wooden door, marking all the connections as they were laid out on the LandRover itself and then he checked each circuit methodically, adding provision for a reversing light at the same time.

Progress was good; they had a rolling chassis with the engine and transmission in place, but there were dark clouds gathering. The body panels had been stored in a remote shed which caught fire one night, destroying the building and melting the aluminium panels. Along with reproduction doors, secondhand replacements were found for the damaged wings, front panel, roof, side panels and bonnet and the rebuild continued with a vented tropical roof substituted for the original. Further problems appeared when aligning the bulkhead with the cab roof, close inspection revealing that somebody had bodged a repair on the bulkhead mountings; so that had to be sorted first. With that wee problem out of the way, the other panels were fitted and Keith gave it a respray. It was starting to look like a Land-Rover again as the build continued, “We galvanised the original bumper and all the trim cappings to finish off the outside, and then had the dash rails retrimmed to tidy up the interior. It was cheaper to buy replacement seats than to recover the old ones, so we went with a new set.” Eventually the last job was completed, and this beautifully restored Land-Rover was ready for the road once again.

Since it first appeared in 1948, the Land-Rover has had more updates than a teenager’s iPhone. Terry’s late model Series III played an important part in the development of the Defender, which remained in production until 2015 proving that perfection is indeed the child of time.

School time in the Shed

Well, what have I been up to? Lots of things! For a start, Dad and I have been learning about nickel and copper electroplating. Very exciting!

The nickel is produced by bars of pure nickel bought on eBay. To make the solution, you mix some distilled water and some white vinegar in a plastic container and put the two nickel bars at either end. Then you connect them to the red and black clips of a battery charger and leave it switched on for a couple of hours. The liquid should turn green, just like a magic potion. We cleaned the water pump piston, so that there was no rust, and then we dipped it in an acid pickle. We used milkstone remover, which meant we had to wear goggles and big green gloves. We rinsed the pickle off with more distilled water and wrapped a copper wire through the hole in

the piston, and then lowered it into the nickel solution. Then, we placed the two nickel bars at the edge of the container, connected them to the red clip and attached the black clip to the wire on the piston. We switched the charger on and waited for an hour or so. Soon the piston was starting to look shiny.

This gave us a first layer, so that we could add some copper plating to fill the pit marks. To make the copper solution we used copper sulphate, which was an old chemical called ‘Bluestone’, used to spray spuds to keep blight away. We mixed this in more distilled water, and it turned blue; not just blue, but BLUE! We used an old copper earth strap as an anode. First, we tried the experiment on an old nail, which turned bright copper colour after just a few seconds. I thought this was brilliant.

When the piston was put into the solution and the charger switched on, it soon turned copper too, but the 12-volt current might be too strong because there are black deposits on the piston. So, we are experimenting with a 5 volt phone charger, and changing the distance between the anode and the piston. Maybe I’ll learn more about this at my next school.

The results of our first go at electroplating After half an hour in the tank with the 12 volt battery charger on. Copper solution on the left and nickel solution on the right.

Lex and Harry are fitting robots at the dairy farm, and Harry says we can have the old pipes and fittings from the old parlour, when the robots take over the farm. We need these to circulate water through the pump, so we can’t do much more with that project for now.

On the last day of my Christmas holidays, we went to see a collection of BIG stationary engines owned by Adrian and Sammy Stewart. They started collecting engines 18 years ago. They started off with three Lister Ds, and their next engine was a Lister CS diesel, which Sammy said was not hard to restore. He also said, they were showing from the start. They first moved into the big engines when they realised just how impressive they were. Their first big engine was a ten HP Ruston Hornsby. At the moment, Sammy’s favourite engine is an 18 HP Ruston Hornsby, and the most unusual engine they have is an Inver seven HP which was manufactured in Larne, Co. Antrim.

Rebecca. Adrian and Sammy built this Blackstone onto a twin axle trailer for showing. The Stewarts’ latest toy. Adrian says it’s not easy to reverse when its on the Land-Rover. Maybe someday we’ll have a hit and miss engine like this Amanco.

Hornsby-Akroyd at the Anson Engine Museum

There has been a significant acquisition at the Anson Engine Museum. The museum is situated at Poynton in Cheshire and is known for its excellent steam section, based on the 1903 S. Stott cross compound mill engine, and the fascinating craft section which features wood turning and metal working.

However, the heart of the museum is the collection of well over 250 stationary engines, the largest in Europe. There are a number of rare engines, including the recent acquisition of the 1892 Hornsby-Akroyd engine serial number 101. This is a major coup for the museum as it is the first production compression ignition engine in the world. For years, it was kept in the entrance to the Ruston-Paxman Research and Development Department in Lincoln, and latterly at the MAN Diesel offices at Hazel Grove, Stockport. Indeed, at one time it was thought to have gone to Germany to join the MAN engine collection. Now, after many years of negotiation by the museum curator Geoff Challinor MBE it is now, for the first time, on public display. By comparison, the museum also displays the 1897 Mirrlees diesel engine, the third production diesel engine in the world.

Hornsby-Akroyd engine 101 played an important role in the compression ignition controversy; indeed, at one time it was urged that we should all stop calling these engines ‘Diesels’ but call them ‘Akroyds’. Thus, there are two protagonists in the debate as to who 'invented' the first compression ignition engine; Herbert Akroyd Stuart and Rudolph Diesel. Diesel's parents came from Bavaria. Hard times and revolution resulted in them moving to Paris in 1850. Rudolph Diesel was born there in 1858 and he remained in Paris for 12 years, but he always thought of himself as a German rather than a Frenchman. He became a German citizen at the age of 19.

Whilst at the Augsberg Polytechnic, Diesel became interested in the concept of compressing air in a cylinder to raise its temperature above the ignition point of injected fuel. However, the high compression necessary, well beyond 1000 psi, was beyond the technology of the day. Initially, the fuel he used was coal dust which, if sufficiently powdered, acted like a liquid. With the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania in 1856, volatile hydrocarbon fuel became available. The more volatile fractions, such as petrol, were frowned on by many, but particularly the insurance companies. Therefore, experimentors turned to heavy oil. Thus, with lower compression pressures, developments in metallurgy and cheap oil, Diesel could eventually produce a working 'Economical Heat Motor'. The first example though, produced barely enough power to turn the flywheel.

Diesel took out his first patent in 1892 and, on his wife's

suggestion, gave his engine his own name and found worldwide fame and reaped huge financial rewards. But things did not go well for him, with failing health and his empire in dire trouble, in September 1913 he was sailing from Antwerp to Harwich aboard the Great Western steamer 'Dresden' when he disappeared. His body was found in the Scheldt River the next month.

Herbert Akroyd Stuart was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, in 1864. His father took over the Bletchley Iron Works in Buckinghamshire. He, therefore, had an engineering background, and was involved in experimental work whilst at Finsbury Technical College. He filed his first oil engine patent in 1890, but he had difficulty in obtaining a fine spray into the cylinder at the precise moment for ignition. Later in that year, he filed another patent with a combustion chamber separated from the cylinder by a narrow neck; this largely solved the problem.

The 1897 Mirlees engine, the third production diesel engine in the world.

The first engines built at the Bletchley Foundry were of poor quality, so he turned to the firm of Richard Hornsby of Grantham. Their first successful compression ignition engine produced was given the serial number 101, and was installed at the Fenny Stratford Waterworks in July 1892. This was followed soon after by a second engine.

These engines were reasonably successful with 32,417 being produced, they powered the first oil engined tractors and locomotives in 1896. A Hornsby-Akroyd engine powered the first chain (caterpillar) tractor in 1905, supplied the power to illuminate the Statue of Liberty

and for Marconi's landmark radio transmission across the Atlantic Ocean.

The unassuming Akroyd Stuart's work preceeded Diesel's by some years. Yet, it was the flamboyant extrovert Diesel who achieved worldwide fame, and is erroneously thought by many to have invented the compression ignition engine.

The Anson Museum is now closed for the winter, but will open again next May. See their website for the dates.

The Vale of Glamorgan Ploughing and Hedging Society

The Society held its meeting at the Six Bells Inn, Penmark, Vale of Glamorgan on 12th January. The chairman, John Thomas, reported that the Society’s Annual Ploughing Match would be held on Sunday 10 September 2023 at Carn Farm, St Hilary, Vale of Glamorgan CF71 7UB, by kind permission of T J Davies & Sons.

The chairman and sub-committee are preparing a site for a spring ploughing practice, and details will be publicised in good time.

Rhys Morgan, Treasurer, has decided to stand down having held the post since the formation of the Society. However, he requested that Lloyd Thomas work alongside him for the year ahead and this was agreed by all, with grateful thanks to Rhys for keeping the accounts in good order.

Alan Lucas gave a full report on the meeting of the Welsh Ploughing Association held at Llanelwedd, home of the Royal Welsh Show. It was noted that the Welsh Ploughing Association had changed the date of their ploughing match to 9th September. This will be held atMorfa Mawr, Llanon, Ceredigion. Also, the South Pembrokeshire Society had changed their date to 10th September, which clashes with the Vale’s ploughing match. So there will be wall-to-wall ploughing that weekend in South Wales. It was pointed out that anyone taking part in the WPA match on 9th September, who wanted to make a weekend of it, would be welcome to St Hilary – accommodation information will be printed on the schedule.

It was agreed by all present that, while everyone involved in ploughing wanted to encourage matches to be held, if societies or associations are going to change their dates from year to year, it will make life difficult for all competitors who want to organise their calendars. That is why the Vale of Glamorgan Ploughing & Hedging Society always hold their annual ploughing match on the second Sunday in September each year.

It was noted that there is a need for good conduct by all competitors entering events. Reports have been received

of bad sportsmanship by some, such as lack of respect for officials and other competitors. It was requested that all should abide by the rules set out and remember the hard work carried out by those who organise these events, which should be enjoyed by all.

Alan was thanked for his report, and for the support he gives to the Society.

The Vale of Glamorgan Ploughing Match on 10th September will cater for 7 or 8 classes of ploughs, and the entry forms can be obtained from the secretary, Sarah Radcliffe on 07976 950680. All entry forms must be sent in by 31st August 2023, in time to print the programme for the match.

The Ferguson Class at this year’s ploughing match will be the Welsh Open, run under Ferguson Club Rules and those of the Ferguson Ploughing Manual 1946, for all Ferguson T20 tractors and GP ploughs made by Harry Ferguson up to 1956.

Donald Walker Charity Ploughing Match

8th January 2023 at Ferryhill, Co. Durham

On 8th January Donald Walker held an annual ploughing match at Little Chilton Farm near Ferryhill, Co. Durham in aid of Prostate Cancer Research. It was an enjoyable day with reasonable weather, until just near the end when the ploughmen endured rain and biting cold wind while they finished their plots.

Eileen Walker commented, “We raised £460 for Prostate Cancer Research, which I thought was tremendous from only 19 ploughmen and friends. Everyone was very generous and we thought the day helped to raise awareness of this disease, which has greatly affected our lives during the last 12 months. We included a Ferguson class for the first time which was well supported”

Happy 30th Anniversary to CLAYMILLS PUMPING STATION

2023 is the thirtieth anniversary of the year when Claymills Pumping Engines Trust was given the keys to the Pumping Station, and began the restoration from its derelict state. Sometimes one looks around and can't believe what has been achieved in that time!

Claymills has to celebrate, so they plan to hold a lot of extra events. The first one will be the return, at the February steaming, of their friend Professor Pumpernickel, with his amazing, explosive science show - fun for all ages, grandparents to be accompanied by a responsible child!

Future attractions will include a workshop with a very talented artist at the May Day steaming, from which they’re really hoping to find some new, personal aspects of Claymills! Later in the year there'll be a one man circus, teaching children his tricks, a jazz band, and possibly a 'Then and Now' display.

Something they’ve never done before, and are very excited about, is a 1940's weekend. The Pumping Station will be ideal for it.

Through late Spring and early Summer, there will be a series of 30th Anniversary talks, and

perhaps most importantly for those who know the site well, Claymills are firmly committed to getting engine A, the last of their giant beam engines back into steam, and all four running together for the first time since 1969; yes, that is more than 50 years!

Claymills welcome you to visit and join in the celebrations.

Notts NVTEC Working Day

5th February 2023

Notts NVTEC Working Weekend is an event that is run by Nottinghamshire Group of the National Vintage Tractor & Engine Club. They aim to show to the public and like-minded enthusiasts, tractors and engines, both static and working, along with many other related items.

The event on 5th February was exceptional with around fifty tractors, ranging from Kubota horticultural tractors, up to giant crawlers like the International BTD 20, powered by a Rolls Royce engine.

As well as being a perfect day for the machinery owners to get out and use their machines, it is a superb opportunity for the public to get up close and see the tractors and implements in use.

Amongst the orginal condition and perfectly restored tractors there were a few ‘Specials’, one being a Fordson E27N Major. It was built as a 75 year celebration edition of the Major, with parts from various Majors throughout the years. It has a 1945 steering wheel and an E27N back end, but has had various other parts from more modern Majors, like a diff lock from a Pre-Force 5000.

Another, but less obvious ‘special’ was the Roadless 98. This one containing a Ford TW engine, but possibly the most eye-catching, was a Natco 130+ which is a more modern version of the original Doe 130 with many of the original Doe problems ironed out.

Everyone agreed it was an excellent day, thanks to the Notts NVTEC organizers, and special thanks to James Dunthorne and family for the use of the land.

THE FIRST NIDDERDALE ROAD RUN

In April 2022, two new members of the National Vintage Tractor & Engine club, West Yorkshire Group, attended the first ‘Brian Chester Road Run’. They enjoyed it so much, they decided to organise a road run themselves.

The two members, Simon Dickinson from Northallerton, and Ryan Atkinson from Kirkby Malzeard, only needed a start and a finish point to enable them to design a route.

As Ryan’s family business is R & J Yorkshire’s Finest Farmers and Butchers they had the ideal premises in Kirkby Malzeard; the start and finish points were obvious. This only left the route to be decided upon. Simon and Ryan took to the lanes on their tractors to select the route. On one occasion, they endured monsoon rain conditions, and returned home looking like the proverbial drowned rats! They were not deterred and, despite the conditions, were determined to give the participants a wonderful day out and raise as much money as possible for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

A little help was given by some members of the West Yorkshire Group to ensure that all regulations, according to the NVTEC code of practice, were complied with and the date was set for Saturday 9th July.

The day was warm and sunny, and a very large field had

hoped

would attend. Skell Gill Farm Meats were set up

for everyone before setting off. Over 50 tractors turned up, of varying ages and sizes, much to the delight of Simon and Ryan, and everyone collecting for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The tractors were led off by Ryan on his recently acquired Massey Ferguson 175. The route took everyone through some of the most stunning Dales countryside, including some off road sections through the Swinton Estate. Our first stop was West Witton to allow the local villagers to enjoy the tractors and nostalgia.

Our next stop was Brymore Ice Creams, ice cream parlour, café and gift shop. All the tractors parked up in the adjacent field to allow the drivers a much needed ice cream and a cool drink. The sound of clinking coins into the Air Ambulance buckets reminded us all why we were enjoying this wonderful day.

The return journey took in even more stunning views. Ryan and Simon’s ambition to give the tractor drivers some of the most awesome views of Yorkshire was truly fulfilled. A slight misinterpretation of the route through Masham gave the general public a fantastic display of synchronised tractor driving, which a military display team would have been proud of!

The Icing on the cake of this fantastic day was on return to the starting point we were all invited to a delicious barbeque, kindly provided by R & J Yorkshire’s Finest Farmers and Butchers.

The tractors were taken through some of the most beautiful scenery in Yorkshire. Local residents enjoyed the display of tractors, spectators young and old were amazed. The weather was a beautiful hot sunny day, and the

Yorkshire Air Ambulance collected £1,400.00. Ryan and Simon, you did an amazing job of making this a memorable day, Thank You.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance would like to thank R & J Yorkshires Finest Farmers and Butchers, Skell Gill Farm Meats, Brymore Ice Creams, and everyone who took part and gave generously to make this such a successful day.

The second Nidderdale Road Run will be held on Sunday, 2nd July 2023. For further information please contact marknicholson952@gmail.com.
