It has been a better year thus far for events; much better that last year’s ‘wash out’! This spring saw the Banbury & District Ploughing Society host the Brian Palmer Memorial Ploughing Match. Great weather and a fantastic turnout. Brian, who was the long-serving Chairman of the Banbury club (2013-January 2024) would have been delighted – the committee and ploughmen did him proud. We popped along to take photos, which can be found on pages 22-25.

I’ve read about the early David Brown Cropmaster tractor with two seats fitted on top of the gearbox.
The first time I saw one of these tractors was in the mid/late 1940s, just after the war, at the RAF station at Stormy Down, near Bridgend. The airfield was grass and I was cutting hay around the perimeter area. The tractor was pulling ‘planes out of the hangers with a towbar on two small wheels hitched up to the front wheel of the aircraft. There were two servicemen sitting on the two seats and the chap on the left got off, unhitched the towbar and jumped back on and carried on like this until the hangers were empty. I thought at the time the machine had been designed for that job –two seats for two operators – the likes of which I had never seen before.
A couple of years later I went to work on a large estate farm where they had a David Brown Cropmaster tractor with the two seats and hydraulics. This didn’t make much sense to me: all the controls were on the right side except for the throttle which was placed low down on the left side of the steering bulkhead (which I will come to later). As a young teenager I found it most offputting to straddle the wide gearbox and sit in between the two padded seats, so I always sat on the right side between the controls. I have a feeling David Brown took off the big wings of their “tractor tug” designed for pulling aircraft, put hydraulics and a pulley on the rear and called it a tractor for farming. The tractor worked
well over the years.
Getting back to the throttle, as I mentioned this was placed down the left-hand side of the bulkhead. My boss on the farm was the lady of the manor who drove an Austin Countryman shooting-brake. One day we’d had a fall of snow and her ladyship was loath to take her car out so she suggested I pick her up on the Cropmaster and take her around the estate to check on the stock etc. as the tractor had two seats. Well, I turned up, her ladyship got on and after selecting the top gear we headed off. When we hit the road she asked if the tractor could go any faster. I indicated to her that the throttle was down between her knees and beneath her Harris Tweed skirt. We both smiled (for different reasons I’m sure) but the throttle came into sight and all went well from then on.
I wrote to David Brown Ltd and duly got a reply. I noted that at the Smithfield Show the following year the throttle was placed just under the steering wheel. I’m sure I had nothing to do with the new design, but who knows?
However the Cropmaster came about, I found it a first class little tractor and it was the first tractor with hydraulics I ever used. Then in the 1950s I got onto a T.20 Ferguson and I’ve lived with them ever since. I still have a 1954 TEF with a two-furrow GP plough, ready for the next ploughing match - which I hope to attend.

TThe Rural Life Living Museum Saved from Closure
he Rural Life Living Museum Saved from Closure, following a successful public fundraising campaign. We are delighted to announce that as of 31st October 2024 we met our target of £150,000 within the 3-month timescale set out at the beginning of the campaign, launched on 5th August 2024.
Overview and Position of the Museum
The Rural Life Living Museum is unique collection of the discarded buildings, implements and objects of everyday life, collected by Madge and Henry Jackson since 1968. The couple opened their back garden to the public in 1973. Tragically, both their children predeceased them, and the Old Kiln Museum Trust (Registered Charity 289150) was formed in 1984 to protect and continue their legacy.
The museum has been created by many thousands of people who have donated objects and volunteered their time, support and skills. In 2024, we now have some 20 buildings and a collection of 40,000 objects.
The Rural Life Living Museum is now owned and operated by the Old Kiln Museum CIO Registered Charity Number 1200370. (Charitable status transferred to CIO in 2022) The museum receives no external funding for operational costs and has survived hand-to-mouth through ticket sales and donations for 50 years. The rising cost of operating the museum meant that expenditure began to outstrip the income generated through ticket sales and donations.
On August 5th, 2024, we launched a fundraising campaign to raise £150,000 by the end of October or there was a very strong chance the Museum that Madge and Henry built in their garden, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, would have been forced to close. The legacy that Madge and Henry entrusted us all with, would have been lost. We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received. Over
2500 individual donors answered our call for help and prevented the closure of the museum by donating towards the campaign. Thank you for supporting the Rural Life Living Museum.
What Reaching our target allows us to do:
• £50,000: We have solved an immediate cash flow crisis in order to sustain the museum through the winter months when income is at its lowest.
• £50,000: We have returned cash borrowed from reserves during 2024 so that these funds can be made available in the future should another crisis unfold.Rural Life Living Museum, Reeds Road, Tilford, Farnham Surrey, GU10 2DL Old Kiln Museum CIO is a Registered Charity. No. 1200370
• £50,000 enabling us to bring on board professional help to develop and grow our audience and diversify our income streams to make the museum more financially resilient into the future.
Before our funding crisis we were working on a new strategic plan for 2025 – 2035. This plan has been slightly delayed in its completion whilst we focussed on fundraising but will be released early in 2025. Its aims include:
1. Governance and Developing the Board.
2. Fundraising Communities and Stakeholders.
3. Partnerships, Commercial Development and Economy.
4. Collections, Interpretations and Visitor Facilities.
5. Volunteering, Preservation of Skills and Intangible Heritage.
2025 will see us launch:
• Our first Patrons scheme for regular individual charitable giving to support and develop the Museum and its offering.
• Our first Corporate Sponsorship programme.
• Our first legacy giving programme.
We have broader plans in the early stages of development with our nearest neighbours and partners to increase our co-working and collective resources / mobility as custodians, conservators, businesses and visitor attractions that may result in a major project together in the future.
We know that, whilst it is much loved, much of the Museum is tired and requires renewal. We will be looking at ways to improve accessibility, the look and feel of the museum in the garden, alongside how we display and interpret our collection for a modern audience, whilst ensuring that we preserve the essence and spirit that built this unique place.

INSURING A VINTAGE/CLASSIC TRACTOR
What constitutes a vintage/classic tractor?
“We cover a wide range of tractors. The most important thing when we are speaking to customers regarding insuring their tractors is what they are being used for.”
Typically, we can consider any tractors that were manufactured prior to 1999 as a classic. Our best rates are for tractors manufactured prior to 1979 as these are considered a true Vintage. However, whether we can quote it as a classic vintage depends on what the tractors are being use for. For example, a tractor built in 1975 can still be used on a weekly basis on a working farm, which we would be unable to consider as a vintage tractor. However, from the other side a 1995 tractor that is simply used to go to shows we would be able to consider as a classic tractor.
It is important if you are speaking to us regarding a quote to be clear as to what you are doing with your tractor, as the information we take from you, will be the base the quotation that we offer.
Why do I need public liability cover to go to a show?
If you go to any organised show, you are normally asked to ensure that you have and provide proof of public liability cover.
The show organisers are required by their insurers to ensure that any people attending the show that are intending to display their vehicle have the appropriate cover of cover in place. These are usually set at 2 million by most organisers. For this reason, they might ask you to provide proof of this cover.
This is required as the public have access to the grounds in which the show is taking place, which means that they will more than likely come across your tractor/vehicle within the show grounds. For this reason, most show organisers require this cover even for static displays. Public liability cover is also sometimes called indemnity cover. This is in place in case the vehicle in question is understood to have caused damage to either property or a person.
Our policy for tractors under our Vintage Tractor policy, allows cover up to £5,000,000 for any property damage claim and unlimited for any personal injury claim.. These limits are reviewed to ensure that they are in keeping with the requirements.
Does my tractor need a registration to arrange insurance?
No. It is not unusual for tractors especially old ones that previously were only used on a farm, not have a registration in place. If you are looking to register your tractor for the road, we are aware that the tractor clubs have avenues that you can go down to look at obtaining either the relevant registration for your tractor or an age-related plate if applicable. This would also apply if you purchase a vehicle from overseas, you would usually be required to insure it first before than applying for a registration.
To insure an unregistered tractor, we would normally use a serial, chassis or engine number. We have had the odd occasion where no ID number can be seen on the tractor. On these occasions we ask you to place your own ID somewhere on the tractor.
If you do wish to drive your tractor on the road, it would need to be registered for the roads to legally drive on public highways. There are a few exceptions to this however, this would need to be confirmed by contacting your local authority or DVLA.
How easy is it to obtain a registration?
I have personally never had to apply for a registration. I have however had many conversations with our customers who have attempted to obtain a registration, and it is not always an easy process. If any part of the application is missing or incorrect, it will be rejected. Usually, it is desirable to obtain an age-related plate as opposed to a Q plate. To do this you would need the year of manufacture dated from factory records to confirm when it was built and include this as part of your application.
I would recommend going via a tractor club if trying to obtain a registration. You might need to be a member of their club before they will assist but usually the joining fees are reasonable, and you receive all the additional benefits of being a member of their club and being able to attend their organised events to meet other like-minded enthusiasts.

BBRITAIN’S PLOUGHMEN & WOMEN, EXCELLENCE
ritain’s ploughmen and women certainly showed excellence in the field when they congregated in Nottinghamshire recently, competing in the 73rd British National Ploughing Championships which were held on the Thoresby Estate at Perlethorpe, by kind permission of Thoresby Farming.
In a very picturesque setting within the Thoresby Estate, in the heart of Sherwood Forest, around 250 competitors showed off their skills over the weekend and although there was rain on the first day, conditions on the sandy land hardly changed for the ploughers. Sunshine on the second day meant visitors came in droves and a lot of smiles from those taking part – especially the tractor drivers without cabs and the horse ploughers!
The Supreme Champion over the weekend was judged to be James Witty from Malton, North Yorkshire who ploughed with a Ford tractor and Kverneland plough. James, an exWorld and British Champion was also crowned the British Conventional Ploughing Champion, winning the final with 300 points, just 6 points ahead of runner-up and the 2023 champion, Ashley Boyles from Lincolnshire.
The British Reversible Plough-Off Final was won by Ian Brewer from Wadebridge, Cornwall, using a combination of Case IH/Kverneland, with 361 points. He had a good lead over the runner-up, Mick Chappell from Doncaster, South Yorkshire who finished with 335 points. James and Ian will go on to represent England in the 2025 World Ploughing Contest in the Czech Republic.
The Vintage Trailed Plough-Off Final was won by John Crowder from Sturton-by-Stow, Lincolnshire, using his Fordson N and Ransome RLSD Major plough, with 278 points. John is the present European Vintage Champion, having won his title in the Republic of Ireland in September. In second place, just 7 points behind was another ex-European champion, John Milnes from Penistone, South Yorkshire using a Massey Ferguson 35 and Ransome RSLD plough.
It was a repeat result from the previous year in the Vintage Hydraulic Plough-Off Final, won once again by reigning champion, Richard Ingram from Atherstone, Warwickshire using a Massey Ferguson 35 and Ransome TS54 plough who had 290 points and a massive lead over runner-up, Ian Berriman from Driffield, East Yorkshire who scored 255 points with the same tractor and plough combination.
Jon Cole from Whitchurch, near Ross on Wye, Herefordshire won the Classic title for the second year running, with 272 points, ploughing with his Nuffield 10/42 and Ransome TS86 plough. Jon is one of the most photographed ploughmen, as he has a ‘seat’ on the tractor mudguard for his spaniel, Rosie. Runner-up was David Thomlinson from Escrick, North Yorkshire who ploughed with a Ford 3000 and Ransome TS86 and finished with 261 points.
IN THEIR FIELD
A Massey Ferguson 65 and Ransome TS82 plough won the Classic Reversible Final for Graham Sutton from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, with 295 points, 10 points ahead of Steven Watkins from Maltby, South Yorkshire with his Massey Ferguson 35 and Ransome TS82.
The other main titles over the weekend were the Overall Horse Ploughing Champion, won by Martin Kerswell from Fordingbridge, Hampshire and his magnificent Percherons, Pierre and Gringo; the Overall Young Farmers Champion which was taken by 22-year old Will Marshall from Doncaster, South Yorkshire who was ploughing in the conventional class and the High Cut Ploughing Champion, won by Shaun Garrod from Attleborough, Norfolk.
Sue Frith, Chief Executive of the Society of Ploughmen, who organised the Championships said, “The Championships are really well supported from people from throughout the country and our volunteers worked hard to put on a fantastic event this year. It was a great site provided by Thoresby Farming and it was a pleasure to be invited to their beautiful estate”.
Main sponsors of the event were Bridgestone/Firestone and further support was given by AR Demolition, Cheffins, Dales Agri Sales Agency, Aztec Oils, B&B Tractors, HME, Homefire, JCB Agriculture, Northfield Fencing and Ripon Farm Services. Full results can be found on www.ploughmen.co.uk.
The 74th British National Ploughing Championships will be held on 11th and 12th October 2025 at Allesley, near Coventry, West Midlands by kind permission of the Brandreth Family and the Sir Thomas White Trust.
Further information can be found on www.ploughmen.co.uk or from the Society of Ploughmen on 01302 852469 and you can follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

NHereford Waterworks Museum: One hundred and fifty years of water and steam engineering
estled on the banks of the River Wye on the outskirts of Hereford, the Waterworks Museum serves to keep the industrial heritage of the area alive, not only telling the story of drinking water, but also the role the city and its munitions factory played in the Second World War.
There’s something for everyone at the Museum –
• Industrial Heritage
• Steam Engines and pumps
• Children’s Water Park (open from Spring to Autumn) and Trails
• World War Two Display
• Welcoming Café
Originally built in 1856, Hereford Waterworks supplied the city with a clean supply of water for over a century. Coming about as a result of the Hereford Improvement Act of 1854, the pumping station and reservoirs made sure that the inhabitants of the city would no longer be plagued by contaminated drinking water.
Initially using simple beam engines and Cornish boilers, the output of the waterworks was soon outstripped by the ever-increasing size and population of Hereford over the 19th and 20th centuries. A water tower was constructed
atop Broomy Hill in 1883 to provide water to Aylestone Hill, which was then being developed.
In 1895, a cutting-edge triple expansion engine was installed, pumping 1 million gallons of water every 12 hours. This was joined by a high-pressure Lancashire boiler. Soon, even these were struggling to cope, and from 1911 onwards they were replaced by electric pumps.
In 1974, the Victorian waterworks closed, and a new pumping station was built next door. It was then that it was decided that the site should be turned into a museum.
Contact us at info@waterworksmuseum.org.uk or visit www.waterworksmuseum.org.uk for details of family open days when visitors can see all engines working and enjoy one of the special attractions planned for 2025. Also open every Tuesday from mid-February to December.

Three small railways are better together!
The Apedale Valley Light Railway, the West Lancashire Light Railway and Amerton Railway are 2’0” gauge railways with a lot in common. All are entirely volunteer managed and operated, all rely heavily on steam traction, and all are underpinned by charitable organisations. Recognising the similarities in the organisations, the three have decided to forge closer ties. A memorandum of understanding has been agreed between the three. This will foster closer working, the sharing of good practice and knowledge between the three organisations.
Mike Spall, chair of the West Lancashire Light Railway, said “In an era of increasing pressures on heritage railways, we are better working in cooperation rather than in competition. The three organisations have always worked together, and many people are already members of at least two of the railways. Rather than three small organisations, we can now speak and influence with one voice. All three organisations will, remain separate and distinct, with their own member-
ships and associated charities, but this agreement will open up further opportunities for each organisation”.
The West Lancashire Light Railway is a 2’0” gauge railway operating at Hesketh Bank, located between Preston and Southport. Amerton Railway is located near to Stafford, and is owned and operated by Staffordshire Narrow Gauge Railway Limited. The Apedale Valley Light Railway, located near Newcastle-under-Lyme, is owned and operated by the Moseley Railway Trust.

The Museum of Rural Lancashire ‘Anvil Day’
by Les Rynhart
The Open Day at
the Museum of Rural Lancashire Life was an Anvil Day, with live horse shoeing and shoe making by farrier John Parkinson.
With two sets of farriers, making and fitting the shoes to horses,it was a great day and the sun shone all day. There was a good crowd watching all day, showing a lot of interest in how the shoes were made
We had more cars than we had room for and also some tractors. The music and the BBQ went down very well.
We raised £1250 for Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool. My thanks go out to all the volunteers, and the people who came with a vehicle, tractor or stationary engine.

Tern Valley Trust’s Spring Road Run
Report&PhotosbyBarryJob
This year the traditional Tern Valley Trust's Spring Road Run was held on Sunday 13th April. The start was at the Grocott Heritage Centre, Brookdale, Prees, Shropshire. This was a very good choice with plenty of hard standing plus the excellent Old Piggery cafe where the tone was set with a restored 1970 Morris Minor pickup (although actually badged as an Austin) just within the entrance to welcome visitors. Adjacent is a museum with informative panels telling the 76 year story of the Grocott family storage and transport company which became the famous Grocontinental Company. The museum features superbly restored examples of the commercial vehicles used by the Company.
At 10.30am the convoy of 76 tractors was led away by Trust Chairman, Gerry Hobday, on his 1969 Nuffield. They headed through Prees then eastwards and south along a short section of the B5476, before turning right at Edmaston to follow a complex route along narrow lanes to emerge at Lowe Hall. This mansion was built in the Stuart Period and was once owned by the notorious 'Hanging Judge' Jefferies. Running northwards over Dobson's Bridge, a canal bridge over an arm of the Shropshire Union Canal, brought them to the halfway stop; a small holding at West End, courtesy of John Yates. Here his eclectic collection of tractors was on display.
After a short break the convoy continued northwards, then looped south through the charming village of Whixall and back to Brookdale for light refreshments and the customary raffle. The 26 mile route was quite complicated and they did well not to lose anyone. The Run was noteworthy in having a number of entrants who had not been on any
of the Trust's Road Runs before. A surprising example was the 1936 Fordson Standard N brought along by Henry Cureton. Not normally noted for their speed, Henry's tractor had no trouble keeping up with the convoy. Another quick tractor was Geoff Lamb's 1982 Trantor. First produced in 1978 they were designed as a fast road tractor. Now a common sight on our roads; fast tractors were something of a novelty in the 1980s and they did not receive the popularity they deserved. A more modern entrant was Kevin Tymm's 1984 Unimog 1000. Built by Mercedes Benz they were designed as a rugged, robust, all-terrain four wheel drive vehicle for agriculture, forestry and construction use. However, Kevin's example had a less arduous life installing gravestones, hence the hydraulic lifting gear on the back. Another first timer was Jack Durose's Massey Harris 744D. An impressive tractor built in Kilmarnock in 1953 with the reliable Perkins six cylinder diesel engine.
The weather was generally good for the Run, although one of the light showers actually turned to hail at one point. Everyone declared that this event, well organised by Trust Officials Gerry Hobday, Mike Johnson and Pete Johnson, was one of the best organised by the Trust. For further information see the Tern Valley Vintage Machinery Trust's Facebook page.
Looking ready for any task was the 1984 Mercedes Benz Unimog 1000 brought along by Kevin Tymms.
One of the more unusual tractors on the run was Brian Hoof's Wolverhampton built 1951 Turner 'Yeoman Of England' Mark 3.
Seen here leaving Brookdale was Jack Durose's impressive Massey Harris 744D built in Kilmarnock in 1953.

Cresting the canal bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal arm was Dave Coombes and his Massey Ferguson 135.

Trust Chairman Gerry Hobday led the convoy away from the halfway stop aboard his 1969 Nuffield 4/65.

A taste of Teignbridge Classics from Devon
Report by Loretta Palmer
Photos by David Keep and Loretta Palmer
In May 2025, in the centre of the market town of Newton Abbot, the Teignbridge Classics Car Club had their main event of the year, where enthusiasts come and proudly display their cars for locals and tourists to marvel at the spectacular makes and models on show.
The club was founded by Alan Perrins and Jamie Theobald three years ago with the aim to obtain as much joy and pleasure from driving their classic cars. The club organises car meets, car runs, shows and events.
Amongst the exhibits was a 1996 Volvo 960 Executive Royal, in pristine condition with a story to tell of a royal connection, proudly shown by Tony Malkin (only the second
owner) who purchased the car two years ago. The previous original owner, retired from the traffic police force in Hertfordshire and was then asked to chauffeur members of parliament and the royal family to formal occasions. The car is now used for family trips out and classic car shows in the summer.
The 1965 two - toned Riley 1.5 has been owned by the same lady for the past fifty years and is still used today on a daily basis.
