elcome to The Winter Special issue. With the dark nights upon us, we have already been breaking ice on troughs and welcoming a day or two of snow giving a short spell of relief from the mud. And we won’t mention the rainfall or the destructive winds!

4 EASY PEPPERMINT CHRISTMAS TREATS FOR HORSES Peppermint and Cinnamon Oat Cookies These cookies combine festive flavours with horse-friendly ingredients for a crunchy, satisfying treat. They can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

Ingredients: • 2 cups rolled oats • 1 cup plain flour • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce • 2 tablespoons molasses or honey • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon peppermint oil or finely chopped fresh peppermint leaves • A splash of water, as needed

As the festive season approaches, you might be wondering how to include your equine friends in the holiday cheer. Enter peppermint — already a firm favourite among horses, it’s the perfect ingredient for homemade Christmas horse treats.

Here, Horse & Country share some simple, horse-friendly recipes and tips to make this Christmas a special one for you both.

Why Peppermint?

Peppermint is a staple of Christmas with it’s refreshing aroma and sweet, minty taste. For horses, it offers more than just a festive flavour. Peppermint can help soothe the digestive system, reduce gas, and even promote appetite in picky eaters. It’s pleasant smell also makes it a natural attractant, ensuring your horse will eagerly enjoy these seasonal treats.

Safety First While homemade festive treats are fun and tasty, moderation is key. Treats should complement, not replace, your horse’s regular diet. When using peppermint, opt for fresh leaves or natural peppermint oil to avoid artificial additives or excess sugar. Check every ingredient you use to ensure they are free from ingredients or preservatives that may harm your horse.

Other festive ingredients that are safe for horses include: • Cinnamon: Use in small amounts, as it’s safe for horses and provides a warm, Christmassy flavour. It can also promote healthy digestion.

• Apples: Fresh or grated, apples are a classic horse favourite and perfect for Christmas-themed treats.

• Cranberries: Ensure they are unsweetened and dried without preservatives or added sugars. They make a great chewy snack when used sparingly.

Peppermint and Apple Bites These no-bake treats are simple to make and packed with festive flavours. They are perfect for a quick snack and can be stored in the fridge for up to a week.

Ingredients: • 1 cup grated carrots • 1 cup grated apple (any variety) • 1 cup rolled oats • 2 tablespoons molasses or honey • 1 teaspoon natural peppermint oil or a handful of chopped fresh peppermint leaves • Optional: a pinch of ground cinnamon Instructions: 1. In a large bowl, mix the grated carrots, apple, and oats.

2. Stir in the molasses or honey to bind the ingredients.

3. Add the peppermint and cinnamon, mixing well.

4. Roll the mixture into small, bite-sized balls.

5. Refrigerate for at least an hour to firm up before serving.

Cranberry and Peppermint Mash Topper This mash is an easy way to bring a festive touch to your horse’s everyday meals. Cranberries are rich in antioxidants and safe for horses in moderation, making them an excellent addition to your horse’s Christmas menu.

Ingredients: • 2 cups of your horse’s regular mash • A handful of dried, unsweetened cranberries • 1 teaspoon peppermint oil or fresh leaves • 1 grated apple • A sprinkle of cinnamon Instructions: 1. Prepare your horse’s usual mash.

2. Stir in the cranberries, peppermint, grated apple and cinnamon.

3. Serve warm for a comforting, Christmassy meal topper.

Instructions: 1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

2. In a bowl, mix the oats, flour, cinnamon and peppermint.

3. Add the applesauce and molasses, stirring to combine. If the mixture is too dry, add a splash of water.

4. Roll out the dough and cut into festive shapes using cookie cutters.

5. Place on a lined baking tray and bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden brown.

6. Allow to cool completely before serving.

Carrot and Cranberry Festive Garland For a fun, interactive treat, create a garland of Christmas-themed snacks that your horse can nibble on. Make sure to supervise your horse to ensure they don’t try to eat the twine.

Materials Needed: • Strong twine or rope • Large needle or skewer • Carrot slices • Apple slices • Dried cranberries • Peppermint leaves (fresh) Instructions: 1. Cut the carrots and apples into thick slices or festive shapes if desired.

2. Thread the ingredients onto the twine, alternating between carrots, apples, cranberries and peppermint leaves.

3. Hang the garland in your horse’s stable or paddock as a fun, enriching activity.

Money saving tips from the vets

W

e are all aware that times are tight at the moment, so where can money be saved – and what cost cutting exercises will cost you more in the long run?

1. How much hard feed is your horse on? If he isn’t in significant work, then good quality grass/hay/haylage plus an appropriate balancer may be sufficient!

We are all guilty of feeding horses twice a day out of habit, but reducing hard feed can be a good area to safely save some money.

2. How many supplements is your horse on? Does he still need them all?

This is one of the biggest potential areas for cost saving we see – horses are often on multiple different supplements, but owners don’t feel they’ve actually made any difference to them. Why not have a chat to your vet or farrier (depending on the supplement) and see whether you might be able to reduce any additional supplements.

3. Does your horse need to live in? It is more time-consuming cleaning a muddy horse before you ride, but the overall saving on bedding and time mucking out can be considerable!

4. If you’re struggling for time and money to keep your horse and ride over the winter, why not consider taking on a sharer? If you can find the right person, it can work really well for everyone! Just make sure you have a good part loan agreement – the BHS have some good examples on their website.

5. Can you reduce costs for farrier/vet/dentist by getting together with over people on your yard and sharing a visit between several of you? Is there a discount for paying at the time?

6. Shared lessons. Instead of a private lesson, as long as your instructor is happy, why not see if you can share a lesson - and if it’s with someone from the same yard you could help each other between lessons!

7. If you are running a separate horsebox but don’t use it often, would it save money on running costs (tax/insurance/garage costs) to sell yours and consider hiring when you need one? If you do, make sure you have a plan (e.g. a friend with a trailer) in case your horse needs to get somewhere as a middle of the night emergency!

8. Whilst OTTBs (Off The Track Thoroughbreds) can make fantastic riding and competition horses, don’t be tempted to take one just because they are a ‘cheap horse’. Whilst they often command a low initial sale price, these thoroughbreds need plenty of TLC to keep them (and their feet) sound and in good condition!

Where cost cutting will cost more in the long run!

be guilty of trying to extend that to 7/8 (or even more!). We see too many lameness issues that relate to feet that have become very out of balance from being left too long. Even if the shoes haven’t fallen off, as a horse’s foot grows it moves the shoe forward, so by the time several weeks have elapsed the shoe can be a long way forward relative to how your farrier originally shod him.

2. Preventative health care (vaccinations, dentistry and worm management).

These are all things which are relatively cheap to manage correctly, but potentially very expensive (and very serious) if the worst happens.

3. Dr Google! If you are sufficiently concerned about something with your horse to google it, why not ask your vet instead? Many vets are happy to have a brief conversation with good clients over the phone without charging.

4. Cancelling insurance. Unfortunately, I have been to far too many emergencies where clients only cancelled insurance a day or two before things go wrong – unfortunately horses always seem to know! If you have several horses and you are sufficiently disciplined, then putting a reasonable sum away each month in a separate savings account can work out - however most people seem to start out with good intentions, which unfortunately then go by the wayside! The Equine Hock

T

he hock is an important part of the hind limb, made up of 4 joints and numerous tendons, ligaments and synovial bursae. In this article we are going to look at the anatomy of the equine hock and how this make-up relates to function.

Joints There are four joints in the hock, only one of which is a high motion (moving) joint. The tarsocrural joint is a ‘hinge’ joint and allows the hock to flex. The joints below the tarsocrural joint are all low motion joints that don’t really move. In most horses the tarsocrural joint communicates with the proximal intertarsal joint (PIT) and the distal intertarsal joint (DIT) communicates with the tarsometatarsal joint (TMT). The most common location for arthritis is the TMT and DIT joints, which are frequently treated with corticosteroid medication.

The tarsocrural joint can develop arthritis but less frequently, it is, however, a more common site for osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) usually in the form of bone fragments in young horses.

hock they can cut straight through this tendon, and often will make a full recovery with no long term effect on performance. Lastly at the front of the hock is the peroneus tertius, this is part of the ‘hind stay apparatus’ which enables horses to lock their hind limbs and sleep standing up. The peroneus tertius connects the stifle and hock, making it impossible to flex one joint without the other. If the peroneus tertius is ruptured diagnosis can be made by extending the hock whilst still flexing the stifle.

Ligaments Either side of the tarsocrural joint run the collateral ligaments, they stabilize the joint and prevent any twisting action. The suspensory ligament originates from just below the TMT joint on the back of the cannon bone, it runs down to the fetlock then across to the dorsal pastern. Ligaments connect bone to bone and generally support and stabilise joints whereas tendons connect muscle to bone and are involved with limb movement.

Hock joint pathology is commonly diagnosed via joint blocks (injection of local anaesthetic into the joint) and x-rays.

Tendons There are a collection of tendons that run down the back of the hock, these are flexor tendons that when activated flex the limb. The Deep Digital Flexor Tendon (DDFT) runs to the inside of the point of the hock, all the way down to the pedal bone in the foot. The gastrocnemius tendon attaches to the point of the hock and is part of the Achilles tendon and the Superficial digital flexor tendon runs over the point of the hock and then down the limb. Injuries to these tendons at the level of the hock are rare, usually injuries to the SDFT and DDFT occur lower down the limb. Occasionally the attachment between the point of the hock and the SDFT can be damaged resulting in the SDFT dislocating off of the point of the hock. There are a collection of bursae (synovial fluid filled sacks) that are located at the point of the hock and between the tendons. The most superficial one can swell to produce a capped hock, and the deeper bursae can become infected if the horse sustains a wound to the point of the hock.

Down the front of the hock run the extensor tendons, these help the horse extend the limb. The common digital extensor tendon runs all the way to the foot down the front of the limb, but it is not an important tendon. If horses sustain wounds to the front of the 18

regarding your horse’s soundness, performance or mobility.

Collateral ligament injuries are quite rare, but can be sustained if a horse is kicked on the hock. These generally require a long period of rest. Proximal suspensory ligament desmitis is a common condition in sports horses, where the suspensory ligament thickens at it's origin just below the hock. This is generally diagnosed via nerve blocks and ultrasound.

Small hock joint arthritis and proximal suspensory ligament desmitis can occur together in some cases.

Diagnosing hock pathology If your horse sustains an injury to the hock; or is lame and responds positively to a nerve block of the hock; then further assessment of all the structures within the hock is required. X-rays allow for assessment of bones and joints, and ultrasound allows for assessment of tendons and ligaments. In rare cases advanced imaging such as MRI can be used to assess the hock.

The tarsocrural joint can be further assessed and treated via diagnostic arthroscopy (keyhole surgery).

The equine hock is a complicated joint that is placed under high stresses during locomotion. Injuries to the hock, and pathology associated with the hock, are not uncommon. As with all problems early diagnosis and treatment are key to long term soundness and success.

Between the cold, the wet, and those long dark evenings, even the most dedicated rider can feel their motivation slipping in winter.

But your horse still needs exercise attention and if you’re aiming to bring home some trophies next season, you can’t afford to take your foot off the pedal — or, rather, out of the stirrups — until spring rolls around.

Now that the clocks have gone back and winter’s settling in, equestrian media brand Horse & Country has shared their top tips for keeping your horse active through the season, so you’ll both be ready to hit the ground running come spring.

Motivate yourself If you’re lacking motivation to get out there, you’re unlikely to stick to a schedule. That’s why it’s so important to find ways to keep yourself fired up and on track — even when the weather seems determined to make you stay inside.

No one loves being cold and wet, so invest in quality winter riding gear that will keep out the elements as much as possible, such as merino base layers, cosy helmet liners, and insulated water-resistant gloves.

Pocket hand warmers can be a real gamechanger on those especially frosty days.

It can also be helpful to set a few clear, achievable goals. Signing up for a winter event or show gives you something concrete to work towards, helping keep your momentum.

And if you feel your routine is getting stale, booking a few lessons or masterclasses can be a great way to shake things up and reignite your enthusiasm. Just keep things realistic, considering the winter weather and time frame.

Finally, why not team up with a friend?

Having someone to ride with will help you both stay accountable and can make those lonely winter rides a lot more fun and sociable.

Assess your horse’s condition What kind of shape is your horse in? Your first step should be a check-up with both your equine vet and trainer. They can assess your horse’s overall body condition and fitness to help determine if they’re ready to stay in full work or could benefit from a lighter workload or even a break.

Your vet and trainer can also guide you on adjusting your horse’s diet for winter, factoring in the colder weather, reduced grazing, and the extra energy needed for exercise. It can be a balancing act, but remember, it’s normal for your horse to slim down a bit before the lush spring grass arrives. In fact, many horses who are good doers will actually benefit from shedding some of that summer weight gain.

If your horse is shod it’s worth chatting with your farrier about winter-friendly shoeing options to suit the type of work your horse will be in.

Warming up Warming up your horse’s muscles (and your own!) is always important — but in winter, it’s crucial.

Skipping a proper warm-up not only raises the risk of injury but also means your horse won’t be performing at their best. Winter training calls

for extra warm-up time, so consider adding a few more stretches or some lunging to ensure they’re fully ready. A longer warm-up also helps your horse settle into the training session, which can be especially helpful if they’re feeling fresh or spooky with that pent-up winter energy.

Find suitable places to train in bad weather For many riders, winter’s biggest challenge is simply the state of the ground. Last winter’s record rainfall made finding dry routes very difficult, to the frustration of many riders across the UK. To avoid getting caught out this year, try to find rain-proof alternatives before the weather turns. Arena riding is always a safe bet, and combining it with a few professional lessons can make it even more worthwhile. Roads and country lanes can also work, as long as conditions aren’t icy. You could also reach out to your equestrian circle for off-the-beaten-path routes — someone might know of hidden spots that stay relatively dry even in wet weather.

If you’re lucky enough to live near a secluded sandy beach, why not consider taking your horse to the coast? Not only will the ground be better, but it makes for a stunning ride that’s sure to revive your motivation, too.

Adapt your training to the season Even with the best-laid plans, it’s not always possible to get in the saddle for a strenuous training session if the weather has other ideas. But any exercise is better than none, even if it’s low intensity. Keeping things “little and often” will still help to maintain your horse’s fitness and prevent you both from slipping into a winter slump.

If cold or wet weather strikes, don’t be afraid to scale back your plans and focus on some simple in-hand conditioning work, instead.

Walking in-hand, lunging and pole work are all excellent ways to exercise your horse between proper rides. Even a quick 20 minutes can make a noticeable difference if you’re consistent.

Winter is also the perfect time to work on your horse’s core and foundation strength.

These exercises are ideal because they don’t require tacking up or even leaving the stables.

Get into the habit of doing a few quick stretches or walking exercises between rug changes and before turnout. These little routines can really

Most riders simply can’t keep up the same level of work they manage in warmer months, and that’s okay. A little downtime can actually do your horse a world of good, especially if they’ve had a busy summer in work. So, be kind to yourself and your horse and be sure to plan in some breaks throughout the season.

Also, be ready to adapt on the fly. If it’s bitterly cold, pouring with rain, or if either of you seem to need a breather, don’t hesitate to postpone a session or even take a week off. It’s far better to play it safe than to push through and risk an injury that could set you back months. Instead, use these moments to strengthen your bond in other ways, like grooming, offering treats, or just enjoying each other’s company in the yard or stable. Sometimes, a little quality time is all you both need.

Winter brings its own set of challenges for both riders and horses, but with a positive mindset and a balanced routine that includes both work and rest, you can keep making progress even through the coldest months. Happy winter riding!

With all the excitement of the Europeans, Sofia’s extraordinary exam results were completely neglected.

August 22nd heralded the following results: Seven Grade 9’s, one Grade 8, and two Grade 7’s. How on earth was that possible betwixt the training, travelling and competing? Obviously, Sofia does not suffer from any form of travel sickness because that was when the hard graft was undertaken with the academic studies. And also realising that the riding is a REWARD for study and not a replacement.

Sofia’s next competition after the Europeans was Bury Farm with Honey D’Or. Their first High Profile show together after months of dedicated training. Their hard work reaped its benefits, and the new partnership was rewarded with a win of 71.01% in the Junior Team Test, and in the overall Youth Class.

Sofia was also competing Boccelli and making their Young Rider PSG debut. A lovely test saw them secure an International Qualifying Score of 69.12% for both domestic and international shows and gain second place. A good day overall in the arena.

Although Sofia mistakenly made her task a little more challenging than it needed to be. A slight miscommunication between the pair meant that rather than utilising the entire length of the diagonal for their four-time changes, they chose to use just 50%.

Miraculously they squeezed in five four-time changes. Obviously, collection is not a problem for this duo.

As bad as this was, there was an awful lot more depending on the outcome of this test. Another bet with 42
