@b.i.g.magazine BIG: Borneo Insider’s Guide

M

an, oh Man. In the lead up to this final quarter I’ll admit I was slightly stumped on exploring themes of male-ness and male mental health. The Movember movement, which is now organised worldwide in honour of male mental health awareness and male cancers, is a huge and lofty topic that requires empathy, grace and reflection to begin with. And in a community where men’s mental health is just beginning to enter mainstream conversation, I was left wondering - would anyone actually want to talk to a girl about this? I was pleasantly surprised, to find that even in a largely patriarchal society like Brunei’s, things are moving very much in the right direction. Who would have thought support groups, mental health awareness events and therapy, would become commonplace in Brunei? This issue albeit being an intense one to finish, has been one of the most enjoyable to embark on. From exciting escapes to the other side of Borneo, where Balikpapan and Sandakan revealed sides of themselves very much attractive, to local conversations and eats with our great roster of Borneo-based restaurants, I hope you find something worthwhile among the pages in this quarter’s issue. In honour of Movember, Men and the many things we look forward to in our individual lives, here’s to a wonderful end of 2026 and wishing everyone a great start to the next year ahead!

Two Good to Be True In a surprise double win, the Bruneian artist and founder of indie publisher Parabelle Studios, Tina Afiqah, has become the first Bruneian to receive both the prestigious Commonwealth Youth Award and the Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Trust 100 Young Leaders Award in the same year. “It’s an honour, and I was surprised when (the high commission) notified me

about the awards,” shared Tina Afiqah. Tina is also a previous awardee of the UK-based Women of the Future Award that recognises emerging young women leaders from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. “Honestly, when I first received the email, I thought it might have been a mistake but because I had that previous award, it also put me in the field of consideration for the work I’ve done on advocacy and being active with community outreach programs’”, she said. The QECT 100 Young Leaders Award provide a

global platform to elevate these changemakers, strengthen their visibility, and connect them with supporters, policymakers, and fellow leaders. Over the coming months, awardees will participate in curated programming, learning opportunities, and engagement across the Commonwealth. This special initiative marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and honours her enduring belief in the power of young people to strengthen communities and shape the future of the Commonwealth. Selected through a highly competitive process from thousands of applications, the awardees represent impactful work across education and employability, environment, food and agriculture, health, and inclusion. Tina will have access to a personal mentor selected to assist and moderate her progress on a dedicated program or ideas.

“They’ll help with making sure we work efficiently in doing the community outreach programmes we’ve been doing so far, so at least I can learn how to execute proper and more sustainable initiatives.” Similarly, the Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work aims to recognise and celebrate young people (aged 15 – 29) in the Commonwealth who are spearheading impactful, sustainable development work in their communities. It is significant for anyone to be awarded one of these recognitions, let alone both within the same year. High Commission representatives acknowledged this adding that it’s a great indicator of the work and Tina’s potential which she has been selected for. •• IG: @british.hc.bn

The Science of Scent Why a whiff of a home cooked meal can send you back to childhood, and what scientists are discovering about the strange relationship between smell, memory and emotion. Jason Crowe

20

Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

sometimes produce something closer to “I’m there.” But there is an important catch. Smells don’t necessarily come with universal emotional instructions attached. Lavender doesn’t contain a tiny message saying RELAX NOW. Vanilla isn’t automatically comforting. Citrus isn’t guaranteed to make you cheerful. We learn what smells mean.

T

here are smells you notice, and there are smells that ambush you. Freshly cut grass. Sun cream on hot skin. An old book. The particular perfume worn by someone you haven’t seen for twenty years. And then there is the smell of your mums cooking. It doesn’t matter how old you are. For a moment, you can be six again, sitting at the kitchen table waiting for dinner. Scientists call this the Proust Effect, after French writer Marcel Proust, whose famous madeleine dipped in tea triggered a flood of childhood memories. Proust had his madeleine. Most of us probably have something a little less literary: gravy, toast, crayons, a particular washing powder or the unmistakable smell of a school changing room. Research suggests there really is something unusual about the way smell interacts with memory. Intriguingly, studies have also found that smell-cued memories often date back to the first decade of life, earlier than memories prompted by words or images. In other words, your nose may have a better filing system for childhood than you do. And food seems to be particularly powerful. Smell and taste are deeply intertwined, which may help explain why the kitchen features so prominently in our memories. A smell doesn’t simply remind us that Mum used to cook a particular meal. It can bring back the wider scene, the house, the people, the time of day and, perhaps most importantly, how we felt. That may be because smell has an unusually intimate relationship with areas of the brain involved in memory and emotion, including the hippocampus and amygdala. Unlike a photograph, which might make us think “That’s the kitchen I grew up in,” a familiar smell can

The smell of strong coffee might remind one person of a beloved grandparent and another of a miserable childhood. One person’s favourite perfume is somebody else’s reminder of an ex. This is where things get interesting for the growing world of functional fragrance, sometimes called “neuroscent”. Fragrance companies and wellness brands are increasingly exploring whether particular scents can influence mood, focus, relaxation or energy, and the evidence is considerably more complicated than simply matching a fragrance to a feeling. Personal experience, expectation, culture and context all appear to matter. And maybe that’s why the most powerful smells aren’t always the nicest ones. They are the meaningful ones. The smell of rain on warm concrete. Chlorine at a swimming pool. The inside of an old car. Onions frying in butter in the kitchen while someone you loved was still around to cook them. We spend our lives collecting these invisible associations without realising it. Then, years later, a smell finds us. For a few seconds, the years disappear. The kitchen is there. Dinner is almost ready. You’re six again. Perhaps that is the real magic of scent. Not that a particular fragrance can make us calm, happy or confident, but that our brains have spent our entire lives quietly teaching us what smells mean. Sometimes, a smell isn’t just a smell. Sometimes, it’s home.

feature Vitamin D/C Imagine standing in the sun and being able to nourish your body. That’s what we’re often told to do for a daily dose of Vitamin D, essential for building strong bones and teeth, and immune system support. Vitamin C often gets characterised as a bucketful of citrus, or those chewable tablets every kid has had to eat at some point in their life. So why might one need to ‘add on’ extra intakes of Vitamin C or D if it’s relatively easy to meet your daily nutritional needs? Magnesium This one’s been trending lately for its touted ability to aid in relaxation and sleep, similar to ashwaganda which had its own trending moment last year. Muscle contracting and relaxing, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant, Magnesium comes in many forms from Glycinate (great for a good night of sleep) to Sulphate (commonly known as Epsom Salts) which are used in warm recovery baths against fatigue.

Fit Feasting Supplements used to be the stuff of fitness nightmares and ridicule, but in the last decade these additional vitamins and minerals have undergone a serious social rebrand. New on the block are ‘natural’ supplements that are marketed as having been naturally occurring nutrients or essential vitamins your bodies need. Studies now, suggest that creatine improves muscle strength and recovery, and supports brain health. It’s difficult even with all the science, to say what’s really necessary, but we’ve broken down the top five most common supplements people take and why you might need them too.

22

Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

Omega 3’s Eat the fish, they say. Omega fatty acids have long been touted in health and fitness as an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet. From reducing your risk of heart disease, to supporting sharp cognitive function, memory and eyesight, the Omega-3 Fatty Acid varieties are the gift that keeps on giving. EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) is a marine fat found in fish that helps lower triglycerides and reduce inflammation. DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is also a marine-fish fat that supports brain function, memory, and eye health, while ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid) is a plantbased fat found in seeds and nuts your body converts into EPA and DHA only in very small amounts.

Creatine Malik, a bodybuilder, powerlifting athlete and personal trainer, affirms that he does take supplements to boost his recovery and performance and has incorporated creatine into his daily life. He busts the myth that creatine damages healthy kidney tissue. Creatine has been shown to help boost athletic performance especially through accelerated muscle growth, drawing water into muscle cells for cellular hydration support which in turn bumps up long-term muscle synthesis.

Probiotics Thanks to commercial marketing, we’ve come to largely to associate probiotics with yogurt and gutfriendliness. Not wrong, but in the wider context of athletic health these living microorganisms do much, much more for our bodies! One of the biggest positives is reported to be a higher absorption rate of key nutrients like protein-derived amino acids, which really means you’re not just consuming something good for you, it’s a genuine bio-hack to level up that could result on faster recovery or muscle growth and improve your body’s immunity. Not all probiotic supplements are created equal, so you’ll want to look for those that incorporate more than just one strain, and it’s often easier to work your daily dose of probiotics into your diet via fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut or kefir.

In a Man’s Ying Chia

World

James Brown’s famous hit ‘It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World’ is not the first statement on patriarchy or gender stereotypes, but it is certainly one of the best known. In Southeast Asia, mental ill-health has been labelled ‘a silent emergency’ – one of the largest contributors to disability worldwide. According to World Health Organization (WHO) and other reports from as recently as 2023, an estimated one in seven people, or approximately 260 million individuals, live with mental health conditions, and nearly 90% receive no formal care. Vulnerable populations, including children, adolescents, migrants, and disaster-affected communities, bear a disproportionate share of this burden yet receive attention compared to other health concerns. The 2023 WHObacked study also cited depression as one of the leading causes of loss of healthy life years – a significant impact that certainly can’t be ignored. And yet, in Southeast Asia, including Borneo, men’s mental health has only just experienced a surge in awareness and action-focused initiatives. That’s a long way behind regions where mental health now shapes policy and is being treated as vital to one’s well-being as eating well and exercise. Zulfan, founder of the Brunei-based support group JIWA, wanted to address what he saw as a critical need to grow

mental health services within the nation, particularly for men, which he says was formerly taboo. In recent years, it’s becoming more common in everyday conversation. “With this public awareness, however, comes a double-edged where people accept that men’s mental health is important yet (they) still need guidance on how to navigate this newfound social subject. How can we accurately provide the safe and non-judgemental space (for men and women) to articulate their feelings and struggles without fear?”. Tiwin Aji, director of Broken Ships, a documentary focused on hidden stories about romantic relationships in Brunei, says working within the sphere of mental health

for the film and in her support group UtaraKu, revealed some commonality in that despite Bruneian men being less ‘forthcoming’ in sharing their stories for the documentary, she finds that ultimately men and women both want to share their experiences as long as they feel that they are in a safe space to do so. “Even though I am still sometimes surprised when men do show up for these support sessions… The fear of judgement, the fear of confronting oneself, I see that present in both men and women”. Tiwin revealed that shame and judgement around negative experiences seem to be so deeply ingrained in our social culture for both genders, and that for men it clearly feels more difficult to engage in sharing their feelings or issues “because they’re not exactly socialised to be vulnerable or to be soft with their feelings”. Gender-based stereotypes about male and female personality traits have persisted for centuries, and Asia’s particular brand of gender stereotyping often leaves many modern men, particularly the young, exhausted and looking outside of their community of family and friends for connection or reflection. H., a 30-year-old private sector worker, shares that listening to relevant songs was a way for him to self-regulate and work through his emotions rather than turning to his friends or family to talk about things. As with most Bruneian men, he has a ‘go to’ friend rather than a therapist for when he needs some help dealing with things. “To be honest it’s more of not knowing who the (right) therapist is for me to open up. I know it’s their job and 100% they would know better but I’m not fully comfortable ’cause I don’t know them,” he shared. From a young age, he says boys were not taught or encouraged to talk to others about their feelings and doing so would be seen as ‘buka aib’ – exposing faults, shortcomigns or sins, whether one’s own or someone else’s. In Islam, this is forbidden because it harms a person’s dignity and honour. Lack of

support inevitably leads to struggle and other mental health issues, and Zulfan shares that Bruneian men find it hard to seek professional help for fear of being labelled weak or unmanly. “ What we have found is that once these men take their leap of faith into making their vulnerabilities known without it defining their worth, they can finally begin to heal and become stronger. We believe all men (from all walks of life and countries) are capable of becoming accountable people and partners and our open support groups reflect that. The JIWA team believes that being accountable isn’t a trait of only a Western or Eastern civilisation, although social

media may have started a culture of labelling.” It is easier than ever to identify or name disorders and other aspects that previously had been misrepresented as something else, which can bring about its own issues – a surge in mental health terms in online public discourse has led to harmful self-diagnosing that limits critical thinking. “Our principle is always objectiveness and critical thinking. Labels prevent that by taking things as you said ‘at face value’,” he explained, adding that terms like OCD or trauma are often misused to generalise these serious health issues. “The term ‘OCD’ doesn’t just cover a

meticulously detail-focused illness but covers a complex neurological and psychological condition, and ‘Trauma’ isn’t just from physical abuse. Verbal and emotional abuse can also cause trauma through many facets such as upbringing, economic situation, etc. True accountability over one’s actions despite one’s circumstances, we found, is a direct result of self-reflection combined with a desire to be and do better. Basically speaking, you have to know what you don’t like about yourself to change it.” ‘Performative male’ was once an accurate term for an aspect of toxic masculine psychology. The viral trend now sweeping mainstream social media platforms raises another important question in the fast-growing sphere of conversation and support around mental health for men. Meetups encouraging attendees to ‘dress up’ as a performative male, described as a “hyper-sensitive soft boy” or “progressive urban” stereotype, were first seen in the United States and have now reached London. At what point does the progress towards healthy selfcare and improvement become a dog chasing its own tail – a spiral of actions and words reflecting inauthentic accountability that don’t actually achieve their true meanings? And why have aspects of this actually terrible behaviour come to be celebrated as a meme online and in mainstream society?

reflect reality. These memes take on a life of their own… but I remain optimistic that more and more men are seeking growth and development in a genuine way, and the explosion of memes reflects social media culture, not reality.” Amir Noor, a Bruneian man in his 30s, agrees that authenticity or accountability from men isn’t something new but social media and meme culture have certainly satirised things. “It’s honestly in men’s nature to peacock whatever piques their interest and I think it says a lot about the mental state of men these days who struggle to balance their masculinity and vulnerability among their peers particularly other male company who would just focus on the former.” Expression is still important, as any personable individual should know, but having wired headphones plugged into your Type-C adapter isn’t scoring you any brownie points,’ he quipped.

@claritybrunei

@claritybrunei

Todd, who runs Clarity, a counselling practice in Brunei, wants to remain positive that the trend will be shortlived but wonders about its deeper impact on young men. “I personally think that there are probably a small minority of people who use the progress towards healthy self-care and improvement as a way to look good to others, but I believe that most people are doing it genuinely. Unfortunately, due to the drive to get social media attention, people create memes and characterisations that don’t really

Hot Wheels:

The Lasting Allure

of a Toy Car

Mattel Creation

28

Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

Nearly everyone has seen or knows what a Hot Wheels car is; the American brand of scale model cars debuted under its creator, the world-famous toy company Mattel, and its co-founder Elliot Handler, and was designed to appeal to young boys as the male alternative to the Barbie doll and primary competitor of another toy car brand during the 1960s and became a global sensation winning the hearts of little boys all over the world. A brief look at the Hot Wheels Brunei Club – a discerning collector and seller group that’s been the backbone of the brand’s presence away from commercial and retail environments – shows plenty of activity and participants that range far in age, showing this is clearly not just a kids’ toy. Over six billion cars sold since 1968, and a string of spin-off products and experiences, are hard proof that the enduring charm of these die-cast cars is here to stay. One of the pinnacles of the brand has become their Monster Truck Live Show, which bring the brand to life with a daring automobile

showcase that’s as exciting as it is actually, kind of dangerous. Tom* had originally planned to attend the event. “Due to other plans that were pre-booked far in advance, I couldn’t go but I would have. I’m not surprised all shows are sold out, they are usually in other countries (when they’re on tour) and we often need emergency funds to go.,” he said. He has been collecting and selling diecast model cars online for the last few years and currently showcases his personal and for sale collection on Instagram. Meanwhile, Haziq who is a local Bruneian car enthusiast, also has fond memories of collecting the tiny metal model cars. From as early as one or two years old, he says he was an avid fan. “I was really young (when I remember getting my first Hot Wheels car) and it was mainly through my granddad. I used to have a bucket of them!” he shares enthusiastically, adding that with Hot Wheels being one of the few brands to make toy cars in that detail, and one of the first ‘viral’ toys, it was incredibly sought after for the extremely detailed models that even had working mechanics and accessories like race tracks and slides for high-speed racing. This October marks the first foray of the Hot Wheels Monster Truck Live Show experience in Asia, taking place at the Unifi Bukit Jalil Stadium, with a fourth show reportedly added due to overwhelming demand from

the sold-out three-day run with over 20,000 tickets done on just the first day of release alone. The family-friendly show features oversized monster trucks performing daring stunts that are designed to excite and anyone who’s ever played or loved the Hot Wheels car races as a kid, is going to remember this show for a very long time! Since debuting in Edinburg, Texas in 2019, Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live has toured 28 countries worldwide, and is set to reach over 30 countries by 2027, steadily building a massive global fanbase along the way.

ome destinations are made for ticking things off, another bucket list idea. Sandakan isn’t one of

Perched along Sabah's north-eastern coast overlooking the Sulu Sea, the city offers a quieter side of Borneo. One where colonial heritage, wildlife and everyday community life can coexist. It's a destination that invites you to stick around rather than rush from one attraction to the next. At the heart of my stay was the Ormond Sandakan, a design-led hotel that felt less like a place to sleep in between excursions, and more like a place to return to. Large windows in the room brought the surrounding landscape in, while warm textures and intentional interiors created an easy sense of calm. After a day exploring, the Ormond moves beyond being just a hotel, turning into a sanctuary where we could watch the day soften outside. There are plenty of things to do in Sandakan – a nature lover’s paradise that somehow also blends into the quaint city centre with ease. A two-hour cruise along the Kinabatangan River brought me into one of Borneo’s richest wildlife corridors. The river moved slowly, beautifully green. We were lucky enough to spot three of the elusive Borneo Big Five, a reminder of just how extraordinary the biodiversity here is. What was equally memorable was what came after: returning to the

hotel, freshening up and finding dinner waiting for me in the room. There was something comforting about the contrast; hours spent under the sun among the wildlife then followed by the quiet luxury of doing absolutely nothing, The Ormond’s attentiveness to guest needs reminded me of why excellence in hospitality service is often rooted in the way your desires are met before you have to ask! And then of course, there was the food. At Rasa, Sabah’s flavours take centre stage alongside Malaysian favourites. I’m not one for particularly spicy food, but there was something about the balance between the dishes that kept me going back for another bite – the kind of comforting meal that makes you stay a little longer at the table. Maybe that’s that I liked most about Sandakan. The days still had plenty in them despite being full of things to do. From wildlife, history, good food and

new places to discover, nothing ever felt rushed. “Slow living” has become something of a buzzword lately. But experiencing it is another thing altogether. Sandakan offered a version that felt less curated and more instinctive: see something extraordinary, then come back and rest. Walk through history, then sit by the window to take in the views. Wake up early and watch the sea breathe in and out. By the time my stay came to an end, I realised I hadn’t been trying to slow down at all. The Ormond Sandakan had simply made it easy.

Belayar tah di Balikpapan!

It’s the largest nation-state on Borneo, yet the Indonesian state of Kalimantan has largely remained undiscovered by travellers due to lack of good infrastructure and awareness on the region. Thanks to Royal Brunei’s direct flights from Bandar Seri Begawan to Balikpapan (East Kalimantan) and the gracious hospitality of the East Kalimantan Tourism Office, BIG explored the vibrant city of Balikpapan and visit some of the city’s greatest sights and attractions. If you love Indonesian culture and food, you’ll love Balikpapan which has a unique charm and history as part of Borneo Island – from magical escapes in nature to thriving city activities and a host of experiences that you can only have in Kalimantan, what are you waiting for? Mari berwisata ke Kaltim! GOA TAPAK RAJA Just an hour from the new Indonesian

capital city (IKN) lies the mysterious cave of Goa Tapak Raja – legend in the Paser community goes back as far as the times of the Paser Kingdom, a historical Indonesian monarchy founded in 1516 in East Kalimantan under its original name of Sadurengas, led by Ratu Aji Putri Petong. Its reach spanned modern regions including Paser Regency, North Penajam Paser, Balikpapan, and parts of South Kalimantan. The cave is also reported to have been a place of spiritual meditation for the community including Datuk Peut who is listed as one of Paser’s community leaders, and is said to have lived in the cave to perform rituals and practise the art of ‘kanuguran’ or supernatural self-defence. After this, the cave was abandoned and turned into a tourist attraction by Javanese migrants in the 1980s with infrastructure like proper stairways that venture up and through the cave mouth, to the surrounding forest foliage. One of the Datuk’s discoveries was a giant foot-shaped stalactite protruding from the ceiling, giving the cave its name of ‘Tapak Raja’. Have a coffee and rest at the tourist kiosk at the entrance of the park, or hop on one of the rafts in the man-made river for a leisurely paddle!

BUKIT BANGKIRAI Test your courage and venture into the tranquil nature of Bukit Bangkirai for a sky-high adventure that will stay with you forever. The area is a protected rainforest where you’ll be able to take a short walk up to the base of the wooden canopy tower and bridge; built in 1998 through a partnership with the U.S.A., the strong foundations of the ‘bangkirai’ hardwood tree were used to create a 30-metere-high stairway and bridge that allows you to move between the trees and experience an exhilarating moment in the forest skyline. You may even spot the area’s famed hornbills and other animals! It’ll take roughly two hours to reach Bukit Bangkirai from Balikpapan’s central city area and the roads do get bumpier further along the journey but it’s an adrenaline rush worth experiencing. The Bukit Bangkirai Tourist Stop has been here for decades and there are lodgings and a small shop/restaurant that you can take a break at. Try on the traditional Dayak outfits for that unforgettable photo op, or try the other activities available, if heights are not your thing. Bangkirai trees can grow upwards reaching incredible heights of 150 metres, and have a diameter of over two meters making these silent giants of the natural world a true spectacle to witness. 32

IBU KOTA NUSANTARA With all the news surrounding Indonesia’s new capital city in Kalimantan, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the impact of human development up close, and on such a large scale. Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), or quite literally ‘Nusantara Capital City’, will serve as the new administrative capital for the archipelagic country of Indonesia. Construction is currently underway and some of the major buildings such as the main palace, several housing and government buildings, are complete. “Modern, green and sustainable” are the buzzwords used for Nusantara’s development with much of the architecture modelling futuristic aesthetics whilst supposedly incorporated sustainable practices. Borneo Insider’s Guide was afforded an exclusive tour of the new capital which is currently not accessible to the public and the immense nature of this project is inescapable – a brief stop at one of the elevated viewpoints affords us a birds-eye view and it feels almost omnipotent as you watch construction carry on at full speed on the near 300,000 hectares of land allocated to the project. From fashionable craft items to export-quality foods like Kalimantan-style sambal, the quintessential Keripik, or Kalimantan Mangrove Coffee, the Galeri Dekranasda is a lovely place to spend your time.

FOOD It’s going to get hot-hot-hot in here! Indonesians have a special stomach for spicy food and you can expect a similar level of heat to Javan cuisine. Communal-style meals are more common here although there are plenty of modern restaurants and cafes that would be worth a trip on their own. But who wants typical when you can immerse yourself in the local culture by eating like orang Kaltim? Think buffet-style restaurants with giant buckets of steaming rice, soup, and fresh herbs that you can have as much as you like. Of course, sambal is life in Indonesia, and you can try your hand at the various levels and styles in almost every restaurant. Kalimantan jeruk or pickles are incredible little scoops that brighten your meal with their freshness.

Skin Maxx your Skin – MEN’S EDITION Nicole Chong

Men’s skincare is a relatively new concept; strange when you consider skin itself has no real gender bias and the coveted goal of ‘glass skin’ is achievable by anyone with, well, skin. What’s perhaps new, is the range and diversity of products out there for any man or woman willing to go on the long journey of a daily skincare regimen and that poreless, dewy glow.

IUNIK iUNIK—short for Ideal, Unique, Natural, Ingredients, and Know-how—is a South Korean skincare brand that comes close to rivalling Dear, Klairs when it comes to catering to folks with extremely sensitive skin, and those same folks who cannot seem to keep their hands to themselves when it comes to matters concerning their bestselling Centella Calming Daily Sun Water SPF 50+. Upon first impression, its versatile design is similar to that of a toner, but slightly more elevated, especially since it is laced with SPF benefits to combat the consequences of being exposed to the harsh rays of the sun in the long run. BIODANCE If Biodance were a literary genre, it would’ve taken on the physical form of a contemporary Asian sci-fi paperback—it is an ode to the fact that it incorporates science-backed ingredients into their skincare products, one of which includes their bestseller Pore Perfecting Collagen Peptide Serum. It boasts an impressive ingredient list that is strictly made up of ten different peptides complex, but you might soon forget and let such fancy and complicated terminology fly over your head, for all your mind could focus on is a cooling, syrup-like consistency gliding across the crevices of your face and offering a nice plump to the skin. DEAR, KLAIRS Their bestselling EGF Blue Youth Activating Drop—a serum with a short ingredient list—perfectly accommodates to the obvious ruckus their skins have made a fuss about, which can range from an irritated, swelling acne to a stubborn dark spot. Though you may initially recognise it as an acne serum due to the inclusion of Guaiazulene, it’ll soon evolve into a holy grail and become an integral part of your regular skincare routine as it hones in and takes care of the aftermath caused by an active acne, diminishing redness and dark spots overtime.

TORRIDEN Their Dive in 5D Hyaluronic Acid Ultra Hydration Serum, which also doubles as a good entry product for folks intent on dipping their toes in the K-Beauty pool for the first time. While the curiously blue concoction may be a mouthful to pronounce, it actually pays homage to the fact that it contains five different molecular weights of Hyaluronic Acid. In layman’s terms, the product delivers deep hydration and skin absorption to the skin, allowing men who work against a thoroughly air-conditioned corporate setting to look unbelievably invigorated throughout the day. ETUDE The SoonJung Foam Cleanser that elicits their outreached hands, which simultaneously attributes to the brand’s longstanding success. Just conjure an image of a rich, creamy lather gently brushing along the crevices of your face as it removes impurities without compromising skin barrier. It also doesn’t discriminate against any skin type, so folks from all walks of life can come to an unanimous agreement that it is a cleanser worth repurchasing for many years to come. IOPE Putting skincare products aside, professional PDRN treatments are also in a league of their own, prompting skincare fanatics from all over the world to frantically (but not figuratively) dive headfirst into their laptop screens to book a one-way trip to South Korea to seek out its miraculous results. But Iope—a thirty-year old, viral South-Korean anti-aging skincare brand—has taken matter into their owns hands to produce a professional PDRN treatment-level without further inconveniencing you and your wallet. Their XMD Stem III Clinical Recovery Serum, which is powered almost entirely by PDRN and a fraction of Hyaluronic Acid Liposome Complex, is no different from the licensed doctor you'd initially sought out as the former mirrors the successful results of smoothing out skin texture and replenishing skin barrier.

It’s very possible you’ll be ordering seconds or third rounds of this. If you want to ramp it up on the meat-o-meter, Baba Oro has got one of the best Bahn Mi offerings in Brunei. It’s a packed sammie as close to Vietnam as you can get, complete with that crusty baguette, liver pate, accoutrements and homemade Vietnamese mayo. The flavour profiles are all familiar enough that your nenek, adik and ibu can all comfortably come here a meal yet have an elevated edge that keeps you wondering, ‘How did they make this taste so good?’

KALIMANTAN

NASI AKWANG

You know them as the first contemporary vegetarian-vegan focused restaurant in Brunei, and fell in love over The Daun's renditions of classic plantbase dishes. The friendly family behind the Bruneian restaurant has added incredible new dishes to their menu, staying on course with serving thoughtful and tasty food that even non-vegetarians will come back for.

sipping right to the very last drop.

Comforting soups are a rainy-day staple, but The Daun’s take on the traditional Herbal Claypot Soup (Bak Kut Teh) is the kind that might have you coming back for another bowl long after the rain has stopped. There’s a real sense of depth to the broth — savoury, rich with umami, and layered with a distinctly woody, herbal character. What makes it stand out is that The Daun makes its own herbal blend from scratch, rather than relying on a ready-made mix, and you can taste the difference. It’s a soup that feels both familiar and thoughtfully made, staying true to the flavours of the beloved family dishes that inspired it. Best of all, it’s the sort of broth you’ll find yourself slowly

Spice lovers, you've got to try their Nasi Padang, it is a convincing take on a classic, with plenty of character packed onto one plate. The plant-based mutton carries the deep, aromatic flavours of the rendang surprisingly well, while the two sambals bring the heat & flavour in different ways. The fragrant fried tempe adds a welcome crunch, and the tofu & egg in a rich coconut gulai add a creamy, aromatic layer that balances out the heat and spice. Fresh cassava & cucumber rounds off the plate nicely. It’s the kind of meal where every bite brings something different — spicy, savoury, creamy, crunchy and deeply aromatic. A proper Nasi Padang experience, just with The Daun’s plant-based twist.

The 50g Protein Bowl delivers exactly what it promises, without feeling like a typical “healthy” bowl. Tempe, tofu, butter beans and kidney beans are coated in a savoury, onion-rich gravy, giving the dish plenty of depth and comfort. Roasted cashews add a satisfying crunch, while the light, fluffy quinoa keeps everything from feeling too heavy. It’s hearty and flavourful — the kind of protein-packed bowl that leaves you feeling well-fed & satisfied.

NON HALAL

Jl. Arteri Supadio, Sungai Raya, Kec. Sungai Raya, Kabupaten Kubu Raya, Kalimantan Barat 78121, Indonesia Tel: 673-826 2248 IG: @nasiakwang

One of the few places to eat non-halal meals in Pontianak, nasi Akwang is said to be helmed by a local ChineseIndonesian family and specializes in roast meats like char siu, roasted pork (Threelayer meat) and chicken. Known for serving large portions of Nasi Campur at affordable prices, Nasi Akwang is backed by heritage recipes that have kept customers coming back since 1980! Expect to get a plate overflowing with rice, your choice of meats (other diners recommend the mixed plate highly), a soy-marinated egg and some side vegetables. It’s a simple, humble

meal that’s done well and generous -no major faults here. This location gets busy and service can get muddled when the restaurant is full so expect to wait if you’re there during peak hours. Nasi Akwang has several branches around Pontianak City so you’re never far from a decent, affordable meal!

TROPIQUE Live out your ‘Matilda’ dreams at Brunei’s first luxury chocolatier café – where sweet dreams are made of some of the world’s finest ingredients and cocoa products, ensuring every bite is pure joy and luxury. The intimate space in a shophouse lot in the Beribi area could be your next go-to café spot, because who doesn’t want to spend an afternoon surrounded by chocolate? We suggest a slice of their Midnight Ganache Cake which is chocolate decadence come to life. Layers of rich dark chocolate sponge cake layers that are sandwiched with thicker lashings of a luxurious chocolate ganache icing. It’s a giant hug of chocolatey goodness, and the magic lies in the fact that despite finishing this very easily, you won’t feel overly sickened (and may even have room for one more slice!). It’s a nuanced balance of sweetness that reflects the expertise and skill of Tropique’s proprietor and master chocolatier, who spent decades under the expert tutelage of dessert makers across the world. It’s pure love for the finest delicious delicacies that can be made out of chocolate, right here at Tropique.

@ Soon Lee Muara 9AM-8.30PM

Craving authentic Thai food? Bess Thai Restaurant is serving up some delicious fare. Their menu features Thai-style street food that are tasty and also great portion sizes making it perfect for family gatherings or Very Hungry People. Indulge in the classic flavours of Thai delicacies like a hearty, peanut-forward Khao Soi with tender chicken drumsticks and a mild curry sauce; the menu is full of warmth and spice yet still manages to be palatable for young ones and adults. We love their appetiser list for a Thai snack party packed with crunchy spring rolls, fresh salads and proteins. Getting ready for the main event? Their longtime favourite dishes like the Pad Thai full of wok-hei action, or a herby green curry with Thai Jasmine Rice, are guaranteed tummy pleasers and easy meals suitable for the whole family. This place gets packed for dinner time so reservations are recommended to avoid disappointment.

ENGLISH TEA HOUSE & RESTAURANT A beautifully preserved colonialera house, English Tea House & Restaurant offers one of Sandakan’s charming dining experiences overlooking the Sandakan Bay. Set within the grounds of the historic Agnes Keith House, English Tea House & Restaurant was inspired by the colonial architecture and the atmosphere of Sandakan’s past. It’s become a must for locals and travelers to stop by for a traditional English afternoon tea complete with fresh scones, cream and cakes baked almost daily. The Backyard Miri

THE BACKYARD SMOKEHOUSE AND GRILL Don’t let the name deceive you – despite being home to a menu of great grilling, The Backyard is a great familyfriendly restaurant that’s spacious and clean! They’ve got a reputation for serving up well-sized portions of food so you can be sure a meal here will probably never leave you feeling like you missed out. Meals here rate as consistently good, and the menu feels like a cross between T.G.I. Fridays, and a classic Americana Grill with loads of barbeque items to sate your appetite. While most of the food leans towards Western cuisine, they do a few nice fusion dishes like a hearty Pork Rendang that is herby and fragrant, complemented by a lovely bed of spiced rice and crisp lettuce. Their most famous dishes are definitely the comfort foods – think thick, thick, thick, pork patty burgers stacked with loads of cheese and meat, grilled and barbeque ribs that melt off the bone on the first bite, or a crispy Chicken Cordon Bleu with that perfectly salty, molten cheese center. Closed on Mondays.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS FRIDAY PRAYER TIME

All retail, food and beverage outlets and business offices are closed between 12 noon and 2pm on Fridays to observe the Friday prayer time for Muslims.

Islamic Etiquette Although Islam is the state religion of Brunei Darussalam, it is also a country that prides itself on the diversity of its people – including their religions. Visitors are welcome to mosques, provided some etiquette is followed. In general, proper attire is required; women are required to cover their head, shoulders, and knees. Some mosques will provide simple robes and shawls to meet these standards. Shoes are to be removed before entering a mosque. Please do not pass in front of people in prayer, and do not touch the Al-Quran. Please ask for permission before taking photographs – particularly inside! Mosques are usually closed on Thursday and Friday, and during prayer times – your hotel, tour guide, or Muslim locals can help you determine a good time to visit.

Most public phones operate on prepaid calling cards which can be obtained in all major shopping areas and retail stores. Mobile prepaid SIM cards are also available for purchase at DST Communications Sdn Bhd (DST Com), Imagine Sdn Bhd, and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd (PCSB) service counters as well as the respective authorised vendors’ stores.

Broken Ships: A Trilogy of Heartbreak, Emotions and Bruneian-ness

It’s a time and feeling many of us are familiar with, experiencing heartbreak in failed relationships, but so often we are used to seeing and interpreting it through a lens of other cultures like a Hollywood rom-com, or a K-drama emotional rollercoaster. Tiwin Aji, first-time director and screenwriter of this three-part documentary series, explores the hidden real-life stories of Mr. and Mrs. X – and by extension, much of Brunei’s love life. Her foray into the world of film-making brings her inquisitive nature to a topic commonly relegated to

Whatsapp chat groups or the confidence of a close friend, and follows it across three stages of emotion. The first film, ‘Denial’, shares insight into the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. X, and the complications in their relationship, while Anger/ Sadness is the overarching theme for the second instalment, and the third - well, you can guess where this might be going. Bruneian-made films are few and far between and humaninterest documentaries even fewer, so the launching of Broken Ships feels like a very grown-up way of throwing our hat into ring of things worth knowing about in the world. The cultural relevance and archiving of these Bruneian experiences really shows that Bruneians are also complex human beings worthy of observance – giving viewers a unique insight into our social approaches to love, relationships, gender roles and conversations around these topics. For Tiwin, the format

of a documentary was nonnegotiable. After spending time in New York to complete her term as a Fulbright scholar, she was exposed to many formats of documentary shooting and fell in love with the style. Reviews for the film highlight the subject matter and premiere as being major for Brunei’s local film, something that she acknowledges gratefully adding that there are more documentaries being released from Brunei as well which gives her more hope of increased support for creatives and other budding filmmakers. “I’m excited! (Releasing) Part 1 of the trilogy was nervewracking for me but hearing positive reviews is definitely affirming. I think the story of Part Two is definitely the most interesting because we rarely get to hear the man’s side of things in matters of heartbreak. And I really just wanted to tell these stories and hope that it resonates with whoever it resonates with.”

I'm Still Here (2024) Anatomy of a Fall (2023) Starring Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado-Graner Directed by Justine Triet While Sandra Hüller's acclaimed performance anchors much of the film, young actor Milo MachadoGraner delivers an equally remarkable turn as Daniel, whose testimony becomes central to a courtroom drama investigating his father's mysterious death. The emotional weight carried by the film's male characters gives the mystery unexpected depth as family relationships, truth, and memory collide. Director Justine Triet carefully blurs the line between objective evidence and personal perception, keeping viewers questioning every revelation until the final moments. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, the film offers intelligent suspense supported by nuanced performances from its entire cast.

Another Round (2020) Starring Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang, Lars Ranthe Directed by Thomas Vinterberg Mads Mikkelsen delivers one of the defining performances of his career as Martin, a high school teacher who joins three colleagues in an unusual experiment to maintain a constant low blood-alcohol level throughout the day. What begins as an attempt to rediscover confidence and purpose gradually spirals into unexpected consequences that affect friendships, marriages, and careers. Mikkelsen masterfully balances humor, melancholy, and emotional vulnerability, culminating in a memorable finale that has become one of modern European cinema's most iconic scenes. Winner of the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Another Round combines sharp social commentary with deeply human storytelling, proving why Mikkelsen remains one of the world's most respected actors.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake Directed by David Fincher Selton Mello delivers a powerful supporting performance alongside Fernanda Torres in this emotionally charged Brazilian drama set during the country's military dictatorship. As political repression tears a family apart, Mello portrays a devoted husband and father whose disappearance becomes the emotional catalyst for the story. His screen presence leaves a lasting impact despite limited screen time, highlighting the devastating human cost of authoritarian rule. Directed by Walter Salles, the film combines intimate family drama with historical reflection, creating a moving portrait of resilience, love, and justice. Widely praised on the international festival circuit, I'm Still Here has introduced global audiences to another outstanding Brazilian performance while reaffirming the strength of contemporary Latin American cinema.

Perfect Days (2023) The Count of Monte Cristo (2024) Starring Pierre Niney, Bastien Bouillon, Anaïs Demoustier Directed by Alexandre de La Patellière, Matthieu Delaporte Pierre Niney headlines this lavish French adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' timeless novel with charisma and emotional intensity. Wrongfully imprisoned, Edmond Dantès escapes captivity and reinvents himself as the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo to exact revenge on those who betrayed him. Niney convincingly portrays the transformation from an optimistic sailor into a calculating aristocrat driven by justice and obsession. The production combines breathtaking cinematography, grand historical settings, thrilling swordplay, and emotional complexity, resulting in one of the most acclaimed European films of recent years. Its balance of spectacle and character development makes it appealing to both fans of classic literature and newcomers seeking an epic revenge drama led by a commanding male performance.

The Boy and the Heron (2023) Drive My Car (2021) Starring Hidetoshi Nishijima, Tôko Miura, Reika Kirishima Directed by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi Hidetoshi Nishijima gives a deeply affecting performance as Yusuke Kafuku, a theater director coping with grief following the death of his wife. While preparing a multilingual production of Uncle Vanya, he develops an unexpected bond with his reserved young chauffeur. Their conversations gradually reveal emotional wounds, hidden regrets, and the difficult process of healing. Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi transforms Haruki Murakami's short story into a meditative exploration of love, communication, and forgiveness. Winner of the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Drive My Car unfolds patiently, rewarding audiences with extraordinary emotional depth and one of contemporary Japanese cinema's most memorable male-led performances.

Starring Soma Santoki, Masaki Suda, Kô Shibasaki Directed by Hayao Miyazaki Although celebrated primarily for Hayao Miyazaki's visionary animation, The Boy and the Heron also features emotionally resonant voice performances led by its central male protagonist, Mahito. Set during World War II, the story follows a grieving boy who enters a mysterious fantasy world after the death of his mother. The adventure blends magical creatures, philosophical questions, and deeply personal themes about loss, family, and acceptance. Miyazaki's final masterpiece unfolds with dreamlike imagery and emotional depth that rewards multiple viewings. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and has enjoyed both theatrical re-releases and widespread streaming availability, making it an accessible entry point for audiences seeking thoughtful international storytelling anchored by a memorable young male lead.

Starring Kōji Yakusho, Tokio Emoto, Arisa Nakano Directed by Wim Wenders Kōji Yakusho delivers a quietly mesmerizing performance as Hirayama, a Tokyo public toilet cleaner whose simple routine conceals a deeply reflective inner life. Rather than relying on dramatic plot twists, Perfect Days finds beauty in everyday rituals, from tending plants to listening to classic rock cassettes during long drives through the city. Yakusho's subtle expressions communicate loneliness, gratitude, regret, and hope with remarkable precision, earning him the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. Director Wim Wenders crafts an intimate portrait that celebrates dignity, mindfulness, and the value of ordinary moments. The film demonstrates how a restrained performance can be just as compelling as the most explosive dramatic role, making it one of the finest character studies in recent international cinema.
