On average, Bruneians spend a huge amount of their time attending one of the many events in a traditional Malay wedding, or planning theirs. A close friend’s recent wedding let me into the inner circle of dealings that must go into executing one of these extravaganzas (and it truly is one, no matter how ‘small’ you might go!) successfully. With all that personal experience and a whirlwind of memories in place, it seemed only fit to dedicate this issue to just that. Planning any celebration is hard work, and ‘the best day of your life’ is no less stressful, but it can be much easier with this handy guide of Borneo’s best. From hair and makeup that will make any woman or man feel like a movie star, to unique venues and some very ingenious stage production teams, you’ll find that planning the first day of the rest of your lives together can actually be as enjoyable as it’s meant to be.

From quintessential Sarawakian eats like a slippery sago worm, to mysterious walks in Mukah that take you back into a dark period of the island’s tribal history, there are memories to be made just a short drive or plane ride away. True to the name, we’ve got an extra BIG appetite this quarter. University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) has once again dazzled the nation’s creative landscape with its annual Spectrum exhibition. For 2025, their UBD Spectrum, entitled, Stellar, is an immersive student-led art exhibition that celebrates the future of Brunei’s artistic talent. This year’s edition isn’t just a graduation milestone, it’s a heartfelt invitation for the public to witness the rising stars of the local design and creative industries, and it could not have been done without the talented youths that are the UBD students of this year’s intake!
We had the honor of chatting to the exhibition’s project leads, Fei and Lydia who shared that the exhibition was inspired by a shared desire to amplify young
voices, Stellar brings together over 60 graduating students who’ve poured their hearts into curating a show that reflects personal journeys, cultural identities, and bold artistic experimentation. “Each of us shine in our own way,” says Fei, “and together we form a vibrant constellation of creativity.”
Divided into three thematic zones (Culture & Heritage, Emotion & Memory, and New & Transformation), the exhibition offers a narrative journey through Brunei’s evolving artistic spirit. From emotional installations to experimental media, visitors are treated to a stunning variety of styles and voices.
Behind the scenes, the team faced tight timelines, paint
mix-ups, and last-minute layout changes, yet they persevered with teamwork, grit, and passion. “Seeing it all come together felt like a quiet victory,” shares project lead Lydia. The event also featured exciting vendors like maetchabybeqs , whose Earl Grey Matcha quickly became a crowd favorite, and exclusive Stellar merch designed by the students themselves.

It often starts from just a simple idea and good intention; Ocean Week Brunei returned this year for a second round of exciting events, with more insightful discussion amongst youth and various sectors of government and the public of ways to progress forward with critical ocean-saving initiatives and ideas. Thanks to the dedicated team at Poni Divers, this unique Brunei-led event continues on with more momentum and high impact ocean actions across the nation.
Poni Divers' Ocean Week Brunei event shone this year with bigger and better avenues for the public, businesses, and organizations to join a collective movement for ocean conservation and sustainability. With the theme "Beneath the Waves: Careers & Creativity in the Deep," their national campaign invited all sectors of society to work together to protect our oceans, inspire the next generation, and build a sustainable future. “Ocean Week Brunei is more than a moment — it’s the culmination of a year of action for our oceans, coasts, and communities. By investing in Ocean Week Brunei, you’re not just supporting a single event; you're powering a nationwide movement that unites government, industry, youth, and civil society under a shared vision for a sustainable blue future.”
Despite just marking the second edition of this event, Ocean Week Brunei has
made huge strides in growing its reach and ambition; the current two months of action, education, innovation, and collaboration across Brunei with events like the Brunei Brunei Ocean Shootout, Brunei Ocean Exhibition, Big Blue Hope’s largest coral planting event, Ocean Sustainability Conference, the Future Ocean Changemakers Youth Forum, and Community Marine Conservation Workshop for individuals of all abilities among others. Many of these were held for the first time ever in Brunei, marking the growth of concern and desire for actionable climatebased events in the nation. This year, Ocean Week Brunei also launched the Ocean Allies Network with four levels of engagement: Sponsors, Partners, Collaborators, and Supporters, creating more ways for everyone to participate meaningfully. Whether for an individual, a small community group, a school, a government agency/association,

or a large corporation, there’s a place for everyone in this growing national movement for ocean conservation.
“The interest from everyone, from government agencies, businesses and students in the conference, was amazing. There's lots of interest in marine conservation and blue carbon, on technology & innovations in that space, and on how we can apply that here in Brunei,” according to Mohd Tahsin Wong Abdullah, founder of Poni Divers, who added that there was a great presentation by the Marine Research Foundation (MRF) on some easy solutions done in Sabah, that can be applied across Borneo. “Everyone’s inspired and ready to take action.” Inclusivity actions meant groups that don’t typically have access to enrichment activities in nature such as the Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU), were also able to take part and gain new experiences that aid in their development and skills growth.
During the Ocean Conference, Azizi Mahali from Department of Fisheries, highlighted how Brunei is strengthening local monitoring and enforcement. Among the Ocean Week Brunei’s achievements include Asia’s first cinema screening of David Attenborough’s Ocean documentary and the region’s first underwater coral planting for individuals of all abilities with Norali, a blind person and 3 from the deaf community MKOKU also joining for snorkeling.

Timothy Stephen, a name now synonymous with the evocative film SINAKAGON , has carved a unique space in Malaysian cinema. Playing the role of both director and cinematographer, he brings a deeply personal vision to the screen, one rooted in the rich tapestry of his KadazanDusun heritage. SINAKAGON, premiered in Malaysian cinemas and the Netflix platform last year. This cultural immersion is described by Stephen as the perspective of “Living in a world as a Dusun.” The genesis of the film lies in a painting by Sabahan artist Yee I-Lann, depicting a pregnant Huminodun, a prominent figure in Kadazan-Dusun legend. “The idea came when I saw the painting,” Stephen explains, “and I was curious about the artist’s interpretation. Huminodun is a myth, so I mythologized the myth.” This personal connection is central to Stephen’s work. “Sinakagon,” he reveals, is a Dusun word meaning “descendant” or “bloodline.”
Stephen’s ambition extended beyond mere storytelling. He aimed to highlight indigenous narratives, a rarity in the
Malaysian film landscape. “I am trying to highlight the indigenous films themselves, films set in the culture and language of Dusun,” he explained. “I’m trying to portray the unity of the Dusun people and enrich the culture and language of Dusun to the world.” The journey to bring SINAKAGON to life was fraught with challenges. Budget constraints, location limitations and the search for actors fluent in Dusun, were compounded by the unpredictable weather and the COVID-19 pandemic. “The main challenge was in terms of budget,” he admits, “but I used my experience and with the help of resources from family, friends and moral support.”
In terms of visual style, Stephen’s eye for aesthetics is striking. “I like leaning more towards low key-light which gives a mystical
vibe,” he said, citing cinematographer Roger Deakins as an influence. The film’s mystical elements extended beyond the screen, adding an eerie authenticity to the production. “During filming the scene of reading a rinait or a chant to call for rain, on the first day of filming he read it, it really rained,” Stephen recalls. The film's reception has been particularly strong in Sabah particularly from the tribal community itself, but peninsular Malaysia viewers have been slower to catch on. Looking ahead, Stephen is involved in the film, “Mantera,”, and plans to work on a horror anthology feature film. ‘Sinakagon’ is currently available to view on Netflix - catch it while it’s there!
Directed by Bruneian filmmaker Syafi Halim, WUJUD is more than just a documentary— it’s a declaration of presence, identity, and quiet resilience. In a world where small nations are often overlooked, the title itself derives from the Malay word for “existence”, setting the tone for a deeply reflective cinematic journey that explores what it means to be Bruneian. WUJUD boldly asserts, “We exist.”
The film was originally inspired by a research project with Dr. Rui Lopes, focusing on Brunei’s architectural heritage until a poignant interview with a grieving mother changed everything. “Her story reconnected us to something deeper—faith, loss, humanity,” Syafi explains. That shift turned WUJUD into a conceptual and emotional tapestry rather than a conventional historical piece. From breathtaking shots of untouched rainforests to everyday conversations in kampungs, WUJUD reveals a Brunei rarely seen on
screen. “People told us, ‘There’s no way this is Brunei,’” Syafi laughs. “That’s the reaction we wanted.” With a contemplative visual style inspired by Human by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and the Qatsi Trilogy by Godfrey Reggio, each frame invites viewers to pause and absorb— not just observe.
What sets WUJUD apart is its authenticity. The “cast” aren’t actors, but real people— friends and acquaintances with stories that reflect the complexity of Bruneian life. “They became the heart of the film,” Syafi says. “Not as performers, but as storytellers.” Presented in six evocative chapters—Mula (History), Beraja (Monarchy), Manusia (People), Alam (Environment), Bahasa (Language), and Islam (Religion)—WUJUD offers an unfiltered glimpse into Brunei’s soul. “At its core, it’s about showing Bruneians as we truly are,” Syafi shares. “We’re often boxed into stereotypes—small, rich, quiet—but our stories go far beyond that.”
Compressing over 20 hours of interviews into a 90-minute feature was no small feat, either. At times, Syafi doubted if it was worth the effort. “But I kept coming back to this question: If I don’t make this film, who will?” The response has since made it all worthwhile. After refining the initial cut, audiences described the film as a time capsule—one that future generations could use to understand the values, voices, and visions of today’s Brunei.
WUJUD is just the beginning for Syafi and his team at New Wave Films. Their next project, Ekosistem Rasa: Gula Anau, has earned funding from National Geographic and focuses on a vanishing culinary tradition in Brunei. The vision? A thriving local film industry that celebrates stories that matter.
To aspiring storytellers, Syafi offers a grounded piece of advice: “Be consistent, be kind, and just start. Upload your work, ask for help, and keep showing up. The rest will follow.” Whether you're Bruneian or a curious outsider, WUJUD is a moving invitation to look closer, listen deeper, and most importantly, to remember: we exist.

Known for its unwavering commitment to quality, durability, and reliability, Toyota’s model lineup has stood the test of time, with iconic vehicles like the Land Cruiser, Prado, Fortuner, and Corolla earning the trust and loyalty of generations. These cars are beloved for their style and strength but at the heart of this success is a customer-first approach; ensuring a satisfying experience from the first showroom visit to test drives, purchases, and postsale support. This focus on building lasting relationships and trust has created a strong foundation that resonates with customers from all walks of life. Enhancing Customer Experience through 3S Facilities, Toyota Brunei continues to prioritise the ultimate total customer experience by constantly upgrading its facilities to meet evolving needs. This includes significant developments
across its 3S services (Sales, Service, and Spare Parts). In 2024, NBT Brunei Sdn Bhd unveiled the new and expanded Toyota Beribi showroom, relocated from Bunut. The upgraded location offers a more spacious and customer-friendly environment, with integrated service and spare parts centre to deliver seamless support under one roof, saving you more time to hit the road!

All Toyota vehicles in Brunei come with generous warranties; up to five years for vehicles and up to 10 years for hybrid batteries. To maintain warranty coverage, vehicles must be serviced at NBT’s authorised centres, which are constantly improving to meet Toyota’s global standards. Malaysia is often known better for towering skyscrapers, trendy fashion and advanced transportation, but it’s still home to some great heritage-steeped gems especially across the Federal state of Sarawak. We embarked on a journey from Miri to Bintulu, Mukah and Sibu, with the promise of sun-kissed, stomach-filling adventures in a region packed with a melting pot of flavours, tradition and culture.
To many Bruneians, Miri is almost as familiar as home and an ideal pitstop for our journey onwards to inner Sarawak. With much to do and many places to stay, The Mercure Hotel is a wonderful accommodation choice; this sunny respite is perfect for recharging from a day of activity thanks to a bevy of dining and relaxation options. The 127-room hotel has luscious beds that feel like sleeping on clouds and a rooftop pool and lounge area that afford you the most Instagram-worthy scenery of the city. Check out that sunset, and stay for dinner, drinks and a chat! Mercure also has some wonderful options as a venue, including two dedicated floors of conference and banqueting facilities, plus the hotel's
social hub, Ruai Co-working Space. Green Key Certification ensures a sustainable holiday with extra peace of mind. Those looking for more unique dining must try the exclusive Gawai Dulang Set at Pullman Kitchen in Miri.
With skies brooding and pathways muddied by rain, we arrive in Sebauh town, with Datuk Kong Floating Temple’s vibrant hues still radiating through the grey. You can only reach this legendary temple by boat, with the fare being bayaran seangkat hati (pay as your heart wishes). It’s a worthy stop simply to admire the vision of it ‘floating’ on its own island on the Kemena river. And if you’re in Bintulu’s
town centre, pay a visit to the Tua Pek Kong Temple – one of the oldest yet historically majestic temples, with sophisticated golden carvings etched into pillars and walls. Believed to be one of the oldest temples in the region, the monumental and architecturally intricate temple has remained unscathed through Bintulu’s many disasters over the years, standing today as a historical landmark. Mukah township is a hidden gem of Sarawakian culture and tradition! Galeri Warisan Melanau has a wonderful representation of Brunei-Melanau history and Borneo’s traditional foods. You’ll be able to trace how sago became the staple food for the island’s communities.
A scent that lingers like a childhood memory: the sweet, coconutty aroma of kuih sepit Mukah, can be found at home-based bakeries in Kampung Judan that still make it the traditional, time-honoured way. Definitely worth a stop, Kampung Masjid is the home for homemade keropoks (chips) where dozens of different varieties can be found basking under the scorching sun to dry. An army of colourcoordinated tebaloi (sago biscuits) can be found smoking over traditional wood fire stoves at Kampung Tutus Hilir, infused with a wispy warmth and aromatic scent.
Those seeking authentic Melanau flavours and an authentic kampung experience will be most delighted with a late afternoon at Lamin Dana Delicacies in Kampung Tellian; start with a
tea-time demonstration of tedebeh - a crisp pancake made out of sago flour and grated coconut, with gula apong on the side; pipus ikan: fish paste grilled inside a palm leaf, makes for a hearty snack, that will give you the strength to stomach a walk to the Jerunai. These macabre and gruesome burial poles of the Melanau people, whose roots go back centuries, are tied to the chilling ritual of live human sacrifices meant to accompany the remnants of deceased aristocrats into the afterlife. We were equally shocked by one standout dish. Ulat mulong (sago worms), are a tribal and local delicacy here and despite its cringe-worthy appearance, these worms have a complex nutty and seafood-like flavour that lingered delicately. Be ready for a creamy burst once you’ve crunched through the exterior of the deep-fried version! For something more light-hearted, an exploration of traditional tie-dye batik techniques will prove fun for all. There is an innovative twist here: using linut (sago starch) as a natural resist agent to draw the motifs. The beauty of batik lies in its unpredictability where no two Batik Linut pieces are ever the same.
With Anthony Bourdain crowning the Sarawak Laksa as ‘breakfast of the gods’, you know there’s great food to be had across the state. Ketumbar Restaurant will be a familiar
taste of home with yummy Malay favourites; the Rain Tree Cafe & Restaurant features an eclectic mix of Asian, Western and Thai cuisine, and an unusual wall of ‘lucky cat’ statues for some snap-worthy moments. Full bellies didn’t stop us shopping for snacks at Bintulu Night Market , where you’ll find local loves like the crawling siput sedut and kerang hidup. Shopping at The Spring Bintulu is unparalleled and conveniently within walking distance from the New World Suites Hotel that also connects to Park City Mall. Be sure to bring plenty of extra baggage! As you’re heading to Mukah from Bintulu via the Pan Borneo Highway, don’t miss the chance to stop at the daily Tamu Bintulu for their “die die must buy” belacan Bintulu (fermented shrimp paste).
There is nothing quite like a mouthful of fresh Umai, especially if it’s from Pasar Mukah where it’s made daily and on-site. Indigenous Empirang fishes are deboned, sliced and marinated with sour calamansi juice making it somewhat like a latin Ceviche. While the traditional Umai uses raw fish, there is Umai Obor-Obor made with jellyfish which you can sample at the Cabe Ijo Restaurant in Sibu city. The dish is elevated by the tremendous mix of textures and tangyspicy marinade. Yaokee Restaurant ’s menu features a mouthwatering variety of Asian and Sibu favourites. At the heart of Sibu Town lies Wisma Sanyan, the tallest building in Sarawak. It’s just a short stroll from Sibu Heritage Centre and the lively Gawai Market where you’ll find indigenous music performances, handicrafts and local food stalls. A prayer stop at the 164-year-old Masjid Al-Qadim is a must, renowned for its beautifully rustic Javanese architecture and a ceiling adorned with hand-crafted weaving. Sunsets in Sibu are sensational! Take a river cruise and be bathed with a warm glow from ‘golden hour’, or a birds-eye view from the sea-facing Win Hotel. Saturday’s hustles and bustle start as early as 4:30 a.m. at the Sibu Central Market , where locals stock up on fresh produce before the day unfolds.

In the heart of Phnom Penh, nestled among Cambodia’s buzzing creative enclaves, is a Malaysian artist quietly working to preserve the forgotten visual language of Borneo’s indigenous tribes—one tattoo at a time. Arth, a Kelabit tattooist and painter originally from Miri, Sarawak, is more than just an artist— he is a cultural custodian, reviving the ancestral tattoo traditions of the Orang Ulu, a collective term for the upriver peoples of northern Borneo. With over 25 years of experience in tattooing, Arth’s journey is anything but conventional. From odd jobs in bars and music studios to becoming a resident tattooer at Sakti Tattoo Collective in Phnom Penh, his path is carved through selfteaching, cultural rediscovery, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity. We sat down with Arth to talk about his journey, his struggles, and why every mark he makes is more than just ink—it’s legacy.
Let’s start with your background. Who is Arth—both the artist and the person?
AA: I was born and raised in Miri, and I’m turning 45 this year. Tattooing has been part of my life since the 1990s, but for the first decade, it wasn’t my full-time gig. I was juggling jobs—bartender, band singer, music studio assistant, even a computer technician at a fashion boutique. Art was always there, but it was something I did quietly, on the side. Eventually, I decided to go all in. I’m completely self-taught—no formal art training, no apprenticeship. Everything I know, I learned through trial and error. Whether it’s tattooing, painting, or crafting, I just kept doing it. It’s been a long road, but a meaningful one.
Your work is deeply inspired by traditional tribal motifs. What drew you to that specific style?
AA: I’m from the Kelabit tribe, which is one of the smaller subgroups within the Orang Ulu—“people of the upriver.” This includes the Kayan, Kenyah, Murut, and Lun Bawang, among others. As I started exploring tattooing more seriously, I realized that no one was practicing or preserving the traditional tattoos from our region anymore. It had vanished,
quietly and without resistance. That really hit me. These designs weren’t just aesthetic— they carried meaning, represented protection, identity, personal history. So I made it my mission to revive that. My tattooing—and even my paintings—are all inspired by our traditional motifs. I see my work as a continuation of what our ancestors started, adapted for the present.
Was it difficult to translate oral traditions and spiritual motifs into a modern visual art form?
AA: Yes, at first. A lot of our tribal knowledge is oral—passed down through stories, not scripts. So I had to do my own digging. I went to villages, spoke with elders, looked at old photographs and vintage tattoos. Some people were hesitant, even resistant. They’d say, “These are our grandmother’s tattoos,” or “That’s not modern anymore.” Others had religious reasons for turning away from tattooing. But as time went on, I noticed a shift. Young people are beginning to reconnect with their roots. There’s this quiet yearning to remember who they are, and art is often the gateway. Now, it feels like there’s more space to revive these old designs—and reinterpret them respectfully.
You practice hand-tapping tattooing. Can you share what that’s like?
AA: Hand-tapping is one of the most challenging techniques I’ve ever learned. It involves two sticks—one with a needle and the other to tap it into the skin. It’s physically demanding, slow, and requires intense focus. Unlike machine work, there’s no room for error. I learned it from a good friend and mentor who has been doing it for years. He’s younger than I am but more experienced in traditional methods. We met at a tattoo convention, and eventually, I worked at his shop. Beyond technique, he helped me embrace my own culture more deeply. That mentorship changed everything.
Has living in Phnom Penh influenced your art or your outlook as an artist?
AA: Absolutely. Moving to Phnom Penh has been refreshing. Most people here don’t know much about Borneo or where Sarawak even is. In a way, that gives me more freedom to present my heritage however I choose— without preconceived notions. There’s genuine curiosity. People ask questions, they want to know more. Sometimes I feel more seen here than back home. I had been flying in and out of Cambodia for a while before finally deciding to relocate. Now I’m a resident tattooist at Sakti Tattoo Collective, and it feels like a new chapter—one where I can share my roots on a bigger stage.

Get a taste of Texas at Smokhaus! A chance encounter with a single slice of smoked brisket led the pair behind Smokhaus to wander down the rabbit hole of smoking meat. The restaurant has since ignited Brunei’s culinary scene with an unapologetic love for premium slow-smoked meats. Nestled in a cozy 25-seater café, Smokhaus blends Texas-style technique with Asian soul; a cafe where every brisket, rib, and sausage tells a story of passion, patience, and perfectly controlled fire. This is a labour of love and time, and at the heart of Smokhaus is the famous 12-hour Smoked Australian Brisket. Richly marbled quality beef that’s tender to the touch, and seasoned with a proprietary rub to elevate the meat without overpowering it; it is the star of their bestselling Brisket Platter, served with creamy hand-mashed potatoes and gravy, tangy house-pickled vegetables, fresh coleslaw, and soft pillowy buns. You’ll be in beefy heaven once you’ve tried it!
For those dining in groups, the Fiesta Platter is a true celebration which features smoked short ribs that fall off the bone, juicy chicken, pulled lamb, and grilled sausages made in-house from brisket trimmings and herbs.
Each element of the Fiesta Platter delivers a distinct flavor and texture, from the juicy lamb ribs to the rich, bone-in beef short ribs finished only with natural meat drippings.
Smokhaus also pays tribute to local cravings with their Nasi Lemak Brisket Seri Begawan, a Bruneian twist on a beloved classic featuring coconut rice, sweet-and-spicy sambal, crispy pusu (anchovy), sunny side egg, and tender slices of brisket drizzled with its own ‘au jus’. All in all, Smokhaus isn’t just a place to eat, it’s a place to experience something truly unique. With their community-driven values, generous portions, and tenderness guarantee, Smokhaus invites everyone to gather, connect, and savour meat done right.

Fairly a new café, Kopi Toko Naga has been the talk of the town for its scrumptious, nose drooling spicy Pan Mee. It’s handmade noodles, served with a party of toppings—anchovies or deep-fried crispy Lekor bites (my personal favourite!), generously drizzled in their homemade dry chili oil, and topped with a beautifully poached egg along with fresh, blanched bok choy on the side. Don’t forget to submerge your noodles in hearty noodle soup for a wonderful blast of flavours! But what’s a coffee shop doing without good coffee, right? Their KTN special is yellow bourbon coffee beans from Brazil, with coconut milk and kaya (coconut jam) as the coffee foam. It’s a hint of milk chocolate, honey and nuts combined with coconut taste—perhaps a sweeter hint of coffee. They also have a wide selection for coffee drinkers who prefer a distinctive taste in their coffee, such as Spanish, Mocha, Café latte with either oat or fresh milk.

They weren’t joking when they said you’ll get an awe-inspiring ambience here. It’s actually the first double-decker cafe in the city of Kota Kinabalu. Using only hardwood tables and benches superposed, the ladder leads customers to the upper tables. At the heart of Light Cafe is a family business run by the matriarch. She does all the cooking, preparations, pouring her soul into the family's authentic recipes. Their signature Chicken Herbal soup with rice needs no introduction– it’s slow-cooked tender goodness til the meat flawlessly comes off the bones. It’s savoury, has a herby aroma and a hint of sweetness from goji berry and red dates that mimics a warm hug especially on a cold, rainy day. They also have assorted freshly-baked bagels that will make anyone swoon for its perfectly chewy interior.

I have a confession to make; romantic movies aren’t my forte. But what I know for certain is that love is indeed everywhere. Love comes in all sorts of forms, and it is undeniably a universal feeling that gives us warmth and binds us together as one. Shoutout to my colleagues who are romance geeks, here’s a rounded up selection of heart throbbing movies that’s nothing in between– that will have you kicking your feet (like butterflies in your tummy) or rip your heart out.
A solid masterpiece. This heart swooning K-drama series won the Baeksang Award 2025 in Best Drama category for immaculate reasons. Narrated by Geum-Myeong (the daughter of Ae-Sun) in a nonlinear narrative, the beautifully tailored series progresses through the four different seasons that highlights the journey of Jejuans, Ae-Sun and Gwansik’s relationship from youthful sparks to weathered hands clasped in old age. It’s the portrayal of the complexities of relationships, parenthood, friendship and personal struggles, all intertwined together with the power of resilience, just like the title, when life gives you tangerines, make tangerines.
