Editor’s Note Hello 2020! And what an exciting year it’s going to be. We’ve only just finished up with all of the fun events and activities that the Brunei December Festival had lined up for us, before we’re plunged headfirst into a new form of chaos: the post-holiday blues, the end of school holidays, Chinese New Year preparations, the upcoming Brunei National Day celebrations, and - for the hospitality tourism industry throughout ASEAN – the ATF Brunei 2020! The ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) will be celebrating its 39th run this year, which means the ASEAN members are coming together this January to promote ASEAN as one tourist destination. The hosting of this event rotates among the ASEAN nations and this year, the honour goes to our little Sultanate. We’ve made a little ATF special in this issue to talk a bit about the event, and for our ATF guests, we’ve also made a list of things you absolutely must do when you’re in Brunei. We love lists, almost as much as we love our Abode of Peace, and so for this issue we decided to come up with a list of reasons why we love Brunei (right now). When we sat down and compiled the list, it grew to such an alarming number that we had no choice but to cap it off at 15. But do know that while those are just 15 of the reasons listed, there are so many more reasons why we love our country, and more reasons pop up every day. This issue won’t be all about Brunei, however. Our intrepid Assistant Editor Sheyenne had a marvellous time over at Zamboanga attending the Hermosa Festival and then spent a few days hiking and relaxing at serene Tawau. We’d like to thank our friends over at the Regional Office IX from the Philippines Department of Tourism for sending us over to Zamboanga, and Royal Brunei Airlines for the lovely trip to Tawau. 2020 marks the 14th year that Borneo Insider’s Guide has been in print, and we’re thankful for each year that passes that allows us to continue sharing what we love about this big island to the world, and we remain ever so grateful to our readers and clients who continue chugging along with us on our journey. We wish you all a Happy New Year, and a prosperous year ahead!

momentous occasion for one of Brunei’s beloved treasures, the world-class luxury resort formerly known as The Empire Hotel and Country Club is now simply known as The Empire Brunei. This was unveiled in a private event on 29 October 2019, held at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom of the palatial resort, attended by the Guests of Honour Dato Seri Setia Dr Awg Haji Mohd

8

Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

Amin Liew, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II and Chairman of JPH Sdn Bhd Board of Directors, as well as Dato Seri Setia Awg Haji Ali bin Haji Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism. The rebranding exercise doesn’t stop at its name; the resort will also redefine their colours and images to better represent the intrinsic qualities

of the hotel. The purpose of this was to support the key objective of encouraging new visitors, recognising the need for a fresh brand strategy. The Empire Brunei turned to an international luxury hotel branding agency to undertake a review of the brand positioning with the purpose of reinvigorating and re-aligning their new look with the brand’s essential qualities.

In doing so, the resort has changed its name to a simpler and more elegant ‘The Empire Brunei’. New visual identities accompany the change of name, which includes a newly crafted wordmark and typography, a new logo, a new colour palette, and new illustrations hand-painted by a commissioned artist. Their website has also been upgraded to reflect these changes, with improved visuals, access and functionality for users across all platforms. In support of this, The Empire Brunei also engaged in the services of award winning hotel photographer, Jeremy Rata, to produce new imagery for the hotel. What hasn’t changed is The Empire Brunei’s breath-taking location, its attentive and warm staff, their elegant rooms, and fantastic facilities. No visit to Brunei is complete without a visit to this renowned resort – a sumptuous tropical retreat and undoubtedly one of Brunei’s finest treasures. Whether it’s to stay in their spacious guest rooms with breath-taking views of the sea, or to dine at a variety of restaurants serving an assortment of Asian and international cuisine, to enjoy the gorgeous pools or the vast private beach, to enjoy the numerous facilities at the sports club or for a round of golf at the Jack Nicklaus signature designed golf course, or to even catch a movie at their cinema, The Empire Brunei is a favourite spot for visitors and locals alike. ••

Reasons Why You Should Sign Up For Musafir (Travel) Takaful

L uggage packed, passport ready, tickets on stand-by, visas prepared, itinerary on hand, hotel rooms reserved, transportation booked… what else should you have ready for your trip? Possibly the most important item that no traveller should go without: that humble travel protection.

Y

es, it’s an additional expense that you hopefully won’t need, but what if you do? So without further ado, here’s why you need to get on that travel protection boat the next time you go on a trip.

1

Because a vacation is an investment for your peace of mind, and you can’t afford to lose that investment. It’s been a long hard year for you and your family, and you’re ready to board that plane with your loved ones for a much-needed reprieve from real life. But things happen, trips have to get cancelled, refunds can’t be made, and that investment you just made goes up in flames. The Musafir Takaful covers individual and family travellers against such issues, ensuring that if your trip gets unfortunately

10

Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

cancelled that you’ll have a chance to reschedule another one at the earliest opportunity!

2

Because medical fees abroad can be really expensive. Unfortunately, personal mishaps are not like itineraries: you can’t plan this stuff ahead. Accidents happen without much of a care of how or when or where it occurs, and if it happens while you’re on vacation, you’ll be on your way to a very harsh wake-up call: medical fees abroad can be very, very expensive. The Musafir Takaful ensures that your medical expenses overseas are covered, even throwing in emergency dental care abroad (because we promise you, a toothache will ruin your trip) to make sure that you and your family are well taken care of.

3

Because unfortunately, minor mishaps are very likely… and costly. You’ve heard the stories: a missed flight, missing or damaged baggage, a delayed flight, loss of travel documents and personal money – these aren’t urban legends. Let’s not forget that these trips are supposed to rejuvenate the soul, and that soul isn’t going to get much rejuvenation when your baggage have gone missing. But Musafir Takaful will help with these situations, offering benefits that you can reimburse for extra costs spent on hiccups like travel delays and baggage loss, loss of travel documents and money, among other pesky things.

4

Because you need to travel with some peace of mind. Vacations, by definition, should be stress-free. You need to be able to travel knowing that you’re financially safe from any mishaps that might happen to you and your family. To sign up for Musafir Takaful, all you need to do to gain this peace of mind when travelling is to download the Takaful Brunei Mobile app on your mobile phone. It’s that simple!

5

Because it’s affordable! Musafir Takaful offers 24 areas of coverage at a very reasonable rate, offering packages for Individual, Family and Group Plans within ASEAN and beyond, including a special package for Haji and Umrah travellers. And if you’re a frequent traveller, make life easier by just signing up for the Musafir Takaful Annual Package. All you need to get started is to download the Takaful Brunei Mobile app, available on the App Store or Google Play. Sign up for the TBA Musafir Takaful for as low as BND15.20!

Sailing Away

at the Inaugural BDYA Sailing Championship, 2019

I

t was a great day for sailing at Serasa Beach on the weekend of 21 September 2019. A slight haze still bothered the air but it was beginning its retreat – blue skies had begun to show again, along with white fluffy clouds, and the shady day was welcome weather for the group of seven to 15 year olds prepared to race their Optimists. The bath-tub sized boats rocked on the waters, the lithe young athletes flipping from side to side with their sails, sturdy and capable and fearless. The youngest was a small seven-year old boy, and we were told that while his small weight might be well against him on a windless day, a windy day would have him blazing

toward the finish line, outstripping his heavier and older opponents. But first, the Inaugural BDYA Sailing Championship 2019 had to have its opening, and it’s an important one because this is the first ever sailing championship of its kind in Brunei. Competitors from Sabah and Sarawak had come down to give our local athletes some competition, with over 50 registered participants joining in this inaugural championship. A satisfying number, one that is hoped to increase with its second effort next year. Guest of Honour Yang Berhormat Major General (B) Dato Paduka Seri Haji

Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin was present for the event, donning the same BDYA cap the other guests sported. The Chairman of the BDYA Sailing Championships, Muhammad Fadzlin Hassan, took to the podium to deliver a welcome speech before handing the microphone over to Dato Paduka Ar Haji Idris bin Haji Abas, the President of the Brunei Darussalam Yachting Association (BDYA), who took this moment to encourage others to learn this age-old sport of sailing and take the opportunity to represent

their country in international competitions. The Guest of Honour then joined the President of BDYA and the Chairman of the BDYA Sailing Championships at the podium, and officiated the opening of the championships with the shrill blast of an air horn. Yang Berhormat Major General (B) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan then personally met and spoke with the participants of the championships, before visiting and taking a tour of the newly built BDYA Clubhouse. The three-day event consisted of three classes of races, namely the Laser and Optimist class and the Windsurfers. Taking place in the waters off Serasa, Mentiri, Pulau Chermin and Pulau Muara Besar, the sailors and their vessels took part in one Marathon and 5 course races, with over 50 registered participants of all ages from Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak. The inaugural BDYA Sailing Championships was organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the Royal Brunei Navy, the Royal Brunei Yacht Club, and the support and generosity of local businesses. The Importance of Welcoming New Visitors to Brunei At its most basic term, the term ‘hospitality’ denotes receiving guests or visitors with a warm reception. Today, the hospitality industry remains among the welcoming front line to any visitor that arrives in Brunei, by providing essential services such as lodging and food for all types of travellers. The hotel and lodging industry in Brunei is aware of the importance in serving their most important asset: their guests. Established in the early 90s, the Brunei Association of Hotels (BAH) have remained aware of the need to constantly evolve with the standards that guests have come to expect from their international travels, and their aim is to maintain and also develop the hospitality industry in the Sultanate. As a member of the ASEAN Hotel and Restaurant Association (AHRA), ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA) and the Brunei Tourism Board, BAH also works closely with

20

government agencies and private tourism bodies within the nation, and functions as a platform to enhance awareness of the local hospitality industry in the country. Successes in the tourism industry remains a key aspect in the flourishing of the hospitality industry, which at this point denotes the 86 hotels, resorts, apartments, homestays, guesthouses and government guesthouses that comprise the number of options for lodging in Brunei. With the increased connectivity of new routes by Royal Brunei Airlines (RB), they are set to see an increasing demand for more diverse tourism packages and offerings, and recognises the need to create more awareness on what Brunei has to offer, particularly in the countries that have direct flights to Brunei Darussalam. Iswandi Maaruf, the President of the Brunei Association of Hotels, comments, “We’re

delighted to see the growth and development of the tourism industry over the years, thanks to the hard work and efforts made by all tourism players in the Sultanate, especially Brunei Tourism and our local travel agents, and never forgetting Royal Brunei Airlines who have dedicated themselves toward promoting Brunei through various marketing promotion and initiatives.” With the ASEAN Tourism Forum and the ASEAN Summit in 2021, Iswandi feels that this is a positive step toward attracting more potential customers to Brunei, with major tourism industry players coming in from all over the region. “We need more events and attractions for people to come to this peaceful country,” he adds. “And in supporting that, we would also need coherence across government policies, transport, innovation, infrastructure and immigration – to better boost tourism and economic growth within the nation.”

When in Brunei…

There are many different experiences Brunei has in store for you. Here’s a few things you simply must do when visiting the Abode of Peace:

Eat local food Brunei cuisine resembles an exotic collision of different influences as a result of our rich historical heritage, but if you want to eat like a local, then make sure you try ambuyat – a sago-based gelatinous dish served with a variety of dipping sauces and side dishes. We would also urge you to try Nasi Katok (‘katok’ means ‘knock’ in Malay; typically sold in houses, a patron would need to knock on the door to buy a few bundles for a few dollars) – a simplified form of Nasi Lemak that takes the basic form of white rice, fried chicken and sambal wrapped in brown paper. Otherwise, eat like a local and check out the variety of cheap and good local snacks at the Gadong Night Market.

Visit Brunei’s majestic Islamic landmarks As the state religion of Brunei, Islam has a great role in influencing the design of many spectacular landmarks throughout the nation. Visit the recently opened Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, that displays over a thousand Islamic artifacts from His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei’s personal collection.

Take a boat ride through Kampong Ayer Hail a water taxi at the jetty in the city center to take you through the narrow waterways of Kampong Ayer, a township of multicoloured houses built on stilts with a vibrant community home to more than 10,000 residents. Or you can take a calming cruise down the Brunei River on the River Heritage Trail to view some of our historical landmarks.

Visit Brunei’s prized green spaces If your idea of a perfect day is to get up close and personal with nature, this is the country for you. The Berakas Forest Reserve, Bukit Shahbandar Forest Recreation Park and Tasek Lama Recreational Park offers plenty of walking trails, but if you want to really commune with nature, pay a visit to Ulu Temburong National Park – a sprawling 50,000-hectare expanse of undisturbed primary rainforest that stretches over most of southern Temburong, and considered to be one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world.

From amusement parks to bike tours with fantastic coastal views, there’s something for everyone in Brunei. Relive your youth at the Jerudong Park Playground (www. jerudongpark.com), gear up for a paintball battle at the Paintball Arena @ Jerudong (rbts.com.bn/paintball), or contact Kingdom Rides + Adventures (kingdomrides.bike) for a bike tour through Brunei’s natural landscapes. There are plenty of golfing options in Brunei too, with courses that cater to all ranges of golf enthusiasts, from The Empire Brunei (theempirebrunei.com) in Jerudong to the Royal Brunei Golf Club (673-2343724) in Berakas. And for some fun on the water, Poni Divers (ponidivers.com) and Oceanic Quest (oceanicquest.com) offer some great watersports activities!

Explore historical wrecks hosting hundreds of coral species and reef fish. But if you prefer to be above water, there are exhilarating watersports activities for a fun day out at sea! From banana boat rides to parasailing, these are some of the best ways to enjoy the spectacular views at Serasa Beach. Tour operators Poni Divers (ponidivers. com) and Oceanic Quest (oceanicquest.com) have plenty of offers for those seeking fun in and out of the water!

WE LOVE ABOUT

brunei On 23rd February, Brunei will be celebrating its 36th National Day, and in commemorating this occasion we thought that we’d put our heads together and come up with a list of things that we love about Brunei (right now). Our initial number was a large amount and honestly, we had a hard time narrowing it down to 15, but you’d be reading this article all day if we listed all of them down!

A

country of history, peace and tranquility, beautiful rainforests and delicious food, a burgeoning arts and culture scene, a new generation of innovative youth – there are plenty of things to love about Brunei right now, and plenty more as the days go by.

Architecture Straight ahead, down below, up above – Brunei usually has a lush natural view for your eyes from whichever direction you choose to gaze. But these days, manmade beauties have begun gracing our skyline. Pavo Point at the city centre, the Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre at Tungku Beach, and the charming One Riverside apartments just being a few that have begun to spring up around the city.

Brunei’s coffee community has grown in leaps and bounds since the opening of the first café that poured the nation’s first ever cup of premium-grade coffee, with more cafés sprouting in its wake. And tea is its furious competitor, with bubble tea franchises bubbling up all over the nation offering the latest in trendy bubble tea beverages. Whether you’re a coffee or tea person, there are plenty of options for either these days.

3

Made in

Brunei MSMEs plays a huge role in Brunei Vision 2035, which has the nation working ambitiously towards a dynamic and sustainable economy. Drastic improvements to Ease of Doing Business in the nation along with the establishment of Darussalam Enterprise (DARe) to support MSMEs took us to the next level. But what has stemmed from this effort is the creativity, diligence and hard work from our local entrepreneurs, who have truly stepped up to the plate. From Islamic educational centers like Tarbiyyah Global to popsicle makers Kyna and from premium coffee makers Koppe Company to plush bean bag makers Brunei Bean Bag, and so much more, we’ve never been so proud to use, learn, drink, eat, or participate in something Made in Brunei.

While we have seen improvements over the last few years, public transportation in Brunei still has some ways to go. But our options have definitely improved, with local company and recent Ricebowl Start-up Award winner Dart – a taxi-hailing mobile app – now offering a no-fuss way to zip around the nation at reasonable fares.

6

Natural Landscapes As a nation that is over 70% rainforest, rest assured there’s a lot of natural landscapes to appreciate in Brunei! From beach sunset views to a bird’s eye view on the acme of a canopy trail overlooking the immense rainforest in Temburong district, there’s no mistaking that Brunei looks great in green.

Bless our birders and their strong sense of conservation. Brunei is home to over 622 winged species and our resident bird-watchers are at the forefront of the nation’s efforts in conserving these feathered life forms and their natural habitat. Efforts in providing bird-watching sport for birders and in return, conserving the birds’ habitats, have been on the rise in Brunei, with more offers on bird-watching trails for tourists, and the success of the recent Brunei Bird Race Series.

7 Theatrical

Talent We love our movies but my goodness do we love our theaters as well. Plays and musicals by Relentless Entertainment, schools, SEEDS and the Brunei Amateur Dramatic Society (BADS), among others, have been delivering solid work onstage for the enjoyment of the Bruneian public. On the screen, The Bungsu Story, a television show created by Filterworks Production, has recently received the honour of being nominated at the Asia Contents Awards. Bruneian film director and actor Abdul Zainidi is constantly hard at work coming up with short films that he shoots in Brunei and collaborates with a 100% local crew. BruHaHa founder and standup comedian Zainal Bostaman was the first Bruneian featured on Comedy Central Asia’s Stand-Up Asia!, and continues to promote stand-up comedy nights in the nation. And if that isn’t enough, the Mahakarya Institute by founder Siti Kamaluddin of Origin Artistic Management is on board to nurture future filmmakers in this burgeoning industry.

8 Music

In Brunei, music as an industry is still in its infancy, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t without our talents. Local rock band Hurricane Honey recently graced the stage of Kustom Fest in Yogyakarta while other rock bands have performed on other stages around Asia, and crooners Syafiq Abdillah and local megastar Aziz Harun have been gracing both local and regional radio stations, while rapper Zed Peace is a regular on the Malaysian hip-hop scene. Stemming from their hard work is a bevy of local indie stars on the rise, and we can’t wait to hear more from all of them.

9

Largely, locals and residents of Brunei are a friendly lot, and we’re all about the community. Our focus on community-based tourism reflects on that – inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the day-to-day activities of village life. There are plenty of homestays available in Brunei for that unique taste of what it’s like to live in a local village.

10 11 A beautiful heritage Brunei is a country with a long and storied history, and our preservation of this heritage can be seen in our landmarks around the nation. Brunei is home to the stunning Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque, the heart of the nation’s Islamic faith, and the Istana Nurul Iman - the world’s largest residential palace. There are many landmarks to visit, but once in Brunei, visit our famed Kampong Ayer: a township of colourful houses on stilts over the Brunei River.

Street food,

cheap food & local food Bruneians love their food. You could find just about any kind of food around the Sultanate to satisfy any gastronomical craving but what we love about Brunei right now (and always, to be honest) is the amount of cheap food and street food that is available. Night time diners can find plenty of options at the Gadong Night Market, early morning risers can munch on local snacks at the Kianggeh Market, and late night munchies can be satisfied by taking a quick trip to your nearest Nasi Katok vendor, where you’ll get a simple meal of rice, sambal and chicken wrapped in brown paper for as low as BND1 per bundle.

Bruneians are all about that healthy lifestyle – at certain times of day you would find areas like the Brunei National Stadium and Bukit Shahbandar teeming with joggers and hikers. There are fitness centers and gyms for almost every indoor sport under the sun, which includes spinning, yoga and mixed martial arts, and healthy meals are also on the rise in Brunei, with two branches of the hugely successful Fuel’d and Pan & Wok’s new build-a-bowl concept and other restaurants giving more options for those looking to eat clean. We also have a terrific healthcare system available for all citizens, residents of Brunei and visitors at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha hospital, the Pantai Jerudong Specialist Clinic, Jerudong Park Medical Centre and Gleneagles Hospital, along with plenty of smaller private clinics around the nation.

14 The burgeoning art scene

A limited platform is not indicative of the talents in a nation, but hopefully, this will soon cease to be a problem for our artists. With brilliant new artists coming out of the woodwork and plenty of art galleries showcasing our local talents, our local art enthusiasts have began to turn an eye toward the art available in our own country. Fantastic graffiti art adorns the Skate Park at the Brunei National Stadium and the Billionth Barrel Monument in the Kuala Belait district, and art galleries at The Royal Wharf, the Creative Space, the Collective Arts, Creative Core and Kaleidoscope are always championing their local artists’ works in the country and outside of it.

Ulu Temburong National Park

Experience a night here or a day trip and visit www.bruneitourism.com for a list of local travel and tour operators. While it’s still fun to go to Temburong by boat, zipping along mangrove lined waterways, the brand new Temburong Bridge that is set to finish construction soon will take you easily from Jalan Kota Batu and straight to Temburong, making a day trip amidst the serenity of the jungle all the more accessible.

T

here was a time when Jalan Kumbang Pasang was a road that connected A to B: you didn’t think about it much, you just drove past it. The Jalan Kumbang Pasang of today is now a hotbed of activity, and you can see why from the new sprawling white-bricked building adorned with fresh greenery spilling out of its edges. These beautiful blocks of luxury style apartments against the backdrop of the Kedayan River, One Riverside, has become the apartment of every new homeowner’s dreams. A bridge has made the location even sweeter – it’s not only close to the traffic-heavy area of Gadong; it’s also now within easy walking distance to the very populated Kampong Kiulap.

ONE

One Riverside might initially charm you with its mere presence, because who wouldn’t want to live here, located within an easy distance of just about every populated area in Brunei? Come in, traverse the construction site that was still going strong when we last visited it, and make your way there. You’ll find both residents and non-residents mingling, spoiled for choice at the variety of gastronomic outlets available here. And if they’re not dining, or shopping, they’re taking a leisurely walk along the walkway that gives you a view of the river (and crocodiles, if you’re into that). Here’s what we found during our trip to One Riverside:

Ximply Chriz

Bloom Café

Twinkle Kids Café

Seafood and Steak at Area 8, Surf & Turf Restaurant Fresh seafood cooked the way you want it and a fantastic selection of steak and lamb for the carnivores. Along with the delicious food, the warm brick interior of this brightly lit space beckons you in (if the delicious aroma didn’t), and gives you the option to eat alfresco if you prefer to dine with a view of the river. IG: @area8restaurant Coffee & Cakes at Ximply Chriz and other dishes too, if we’re honest, we’ve been fans of all that Ximply Chriz has to offer since its first branch in Regent Square, Kiulap. IG: @ximplychriz Some people say the best murtabak can be bought at Iskandar Curry House, and if the waiting line at its first branch at Lambak is any indication, we’d say that’s probably true. Happily they’ve ventured out with another branch here, with vintage images of Brunei adorning the walls, certainly prettier than its first location but with the same great food. IG: @iskandarcurryhouse

Coffee & Cakes & Flowers at Bloom Café because this Instagram-worthy café isn’t just Instagram-worthy of shots, it’s also a florist. It’s also run by Mr Baker, so it’s reasonable to expect great service, food, and of course, coffee. IG: @bloomcafebn

So much cuteness going on at Twinkle Kids Café, a jungle gym slash café that is just plain beautiful to look at. The jungle gym takes up a section of the ground and mezzanine floors, while the larger area is dedicated to keeping the parents occupied and fed. IG: @twinklekidscafebrunei Options, options, options… because if those restaurants didn’t do it for you, what do you feel like eating? Daeon Korean Restaurant serves up Korean cuisine while Nanyang Food Garden is ready for your dimsum needs. Delicious sushi is available at Excapade Sushi Restaurant, while grilled meats can be found at the always popular Amsarra Lebanese and Mediterranean Grill. And drop by for delectable chocolate selections over at Chocolate Origin! Athletic goods and gear a-plenty, because Under Armour is here, and so is Run Trail Nation and Cycle Nation. All manners of sports attire and shoes of the Under Armour brand can be found here for both men and

women, along with sporting accessories from Garmin. Next door is a haven for cyclists, offering different types of bicycles for different terrains, while Run Trail Nation prepares running, walking and jogging enthusiasts to go the distance with their selection of attire, shoes and accessories. IG: @underarmourbn There’s only one supermarket here, but if you were going to choose any supermarket in Brunei, it would be Supa Save and its wondrous varieties of supermarket goods that you just can’t find anywhere else in Brunei. Sure it’s been a long standing joke that you don’t actually save at Supa Save, rather the opposite, but with this selection of food, who would blame you? Supa Save also has a bakery that allows you to order and dine on some kopitiam favourites at a little alfresco area just outside the supermarket, in case your forays into this supermarket haven has left you peckish (we promise you it will). by Tawau

Tawau is often an overlooked destination, one that is a drive-by situation on the way to a better known city. But Royal Brunei Airlines circles it on the map for Bruneians with its latest RB Link flights flying to seven destinations all around Borneo, with Tawau being just one of the destinations. Boarding the 72-seater ATR turboprop aircraft (operated by Malindo Air), we were thrilled to arrive to a celebratory greeting as a warm welcoming committee and traditional performers commemorated the successful inaugural flight with a water cannon salute. Sheyenne Siah

T

he town of Tawau itself moves at a slow pace, with offerings of flea markets and actual markets, if that’s your kind of thing. But if the sea itself and its delicious abundance of underwater delicacies are more up your alley, then Semporna, a happening port just 90 minutes away from Tawau, is your best bet. They say seeing is believing and with that in mind, we set out to ogle at these azure beauties ourselves and we were not disappointed. Tourists from the East are known for their propensity to sniff out the best destinations with the cleanest air and the bluest waters, and it was in Semporna and its many islands that we found ourselves bonding together over appreciation for the elements. The three islands to see and be seen at are Sibuan, Mantabuan

and Bohey Dulang where transparent waters reflecting the powder blue of the sky is only to be expected alongside its pale, shining sands. Bohey Dulang plays daily host to a growing number of tourists hoping to get a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the peak by climbing the trying hike of 700m (advisable only to those with a healthy stamina and strong knees). Sibuan and Mantabuan islands are your typical sand bars primed for a sunny afternoon of snorkeling and picnicking—and by typical we mean absolutely irresistible, even to the non-swimmer (life jackets are your friends!). Nusa Kuya Resort on Bum Bum Island is Sabah’s answer to the Maldives. Standing proudly in a stretch of turquoise sea, the laidback resort, which houses ten rooms, has only

been open since October 2019. The venue of the resort speaks for itself, which means there is little on the activity menu aside from its main offer—your very own expanse of sea in your underwater backyard. With little but flimsy bamboo partitions to offer the illusion of privacy between your suites and the open water, there is a certain liberation that accompanies check-in. Snorkeling gear is provided upon request and sea turtle sightings at night can be expected at this peaceful abode. Balung River Eco-Resort, only 40 minutes away from the Tawau Airport, was a dream to wander around and get lost in with its manicured wilderness and unassuming charm. The lodge pool laid at the foot of an emerald ravine, inciting daydreams of listless afternoons

with a cold, sweaty drink in hand. While electricity heavily relies on a generator here, there is enough nature to dabble in and soak up to last you a day or three. Back in Tawau, we also took a day to go around the sights. Tawau Hills Park, home to the tallest (and also the second tallest) topical tree in the world at 96.9 metres, saw us taking an engaging stroll through the Botanical Gardens, not far from their famed Gelas Hill Waterfalls and Sulphur Hot Springs. An educational tour of the Teck Guan Cocoa Museum introduced us to the world of Sabahan cocoa, where we went loco at Hoko’s souvenir gallery scooping up their most popular chocolate products which are exported both locally and internationally. Another interesting stop in our Tawau tour was the Bukit Tengkorak (Skull Hill) Gallery, one of the largest pottery making sites in Southeast Asia back in the Neolithic period which sits idly on the exposed rim of an ancient volcanic crater. “Semporna” translates to “perfection” in the Malay language and a better word to describe our Tawau experience in a nutshell would be difficult to find.

A BiG THANK YOU TO SABAH TOURISM (WWW.SABAHTOURISM.COM) FOR BEING WONDERFUL HOSTS DURING OUR TRIP. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON DIRECT FLIGHTS TO TAWAU VIA THE RB LINK FLIGHTS, VISIT WWW.FLYROYALBRUNEI.COM.

Zamboanga, the exotic sounding highly urbanised city is a glimmering gem encased in sparkling turquoise waters. So when our friends in the Department of Tourism Region 9 invited us over for a firsthand experience of the renowned Zamboanga Hermosa Festival, we packed our bags and jumped at the opportunity.

Sheyenne Siah

R

ight off the bat we found ourselves immersed in our very first event: the highly competitive Regatta de Zamboanga. The sun shone favourably upon some 200 vintas (traditional sail boats) and sailors ready to coast the curved shores of R. T. Lim Boulevard in a bid to win 15,000 pesos and the title of champion. Open to all Zamboangueños, the race has been a pillar event of the Hermosa Festival and is a vibrant tribute to their patron saint, La Virgen Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zarragosa. Fittingly, vinta 001 emerged as the overall champion, neon

sails pulled to attention as they sailed toward the cheers of crowds spanning the finishing shoreline. Their win was followed by another show of victory, an impressive capability demonstration held by the Philippine Navy through the Naval Forces Western Mindanao. Fresh from the thrill of the show, we were ushered to the Wow Sardinas Grand Boodle Fight where the masses come together to partake in a public feast of tinned sardines and crackers, highlighting the city’s standing as the Sardines Capital of the Philippines—aptly titled considering 9 out of 12

national sardine companies operate within Zamboanga, accounting for roughly 70% of the city’s economy. Invited on a row boat to gently amble downstream through the merry mangroves of Zamboanga, we became acquainted with the workings of a mangrove (and harmless upside-down jellyfish which run rampant in these parts). Brought to a halt, we were told to reach into the water and, carefully avoiding algae, to pull up strands of lato. The deliciously savoury sea grapes grow in abundance around here—also known as “green caviar” for its characteristic salty taste and explosive crunch akin to that of roe. The department of tourism takes vast measures to promote the preservation of the mangroves because one square metre of sea grass can produce up to 10L of oxygen—just one of the benefits of a healthy mangrove ecosystem. Anton Mari H. Lim is someone familiar to these areas as the founder of Yellow Boat Project (www.yellowboat.org), a donation-based organisation that builds boats for children in underprivileged river areas to help them get to school safe and dry. “You don’t have to be swimming to school to know how it is to be swimming to school. It’s about empathy,” he explains, as we watch the community of bright yellow boats bobbing in the water, a noble and successful attempt at community-based ecotourism. Breathtaking bodies of water was a running theme throughout our trip as we were brought to Onse Islas in Panubigan where we trekked on the serene Sirromon Island for a scenic lunch surrounded by sparkling waters and then to Bisaya-Bisaya Island for a splashy afternoon of sunbathing, kayaking and laughter among astounding rock formations. It should be mentioned that all islands were maintained to an impressive standard of cleanliness as part of the “Garbage In, Garbage Out” policy. For two consecutive nights, Bay Tal Mal Restaurant were our kind dinner hosts as we

dined on a symphony of spices and herbs in their famed Latal platter parading a variety of traditional Tausug dishes such as tyula itum and beef kulma. Another iconic must-try we came across was Alavar Seafood Restaurant where we had our first taste of curacha: a luscious and fleshy deep sea crab, cooked in Alavar’s iconic sauce. Speaking of curachas, they make for wonderful island feasts to be devoured voraciously after a morning of beachy fun in the sun on Great Santa Cruz Island. The island is known for its pink coralline sand and as our guide aptly puts it, “If Santa Cruz had a Facebook page, its profile picture would be its pink sand.” As one of the protected areas in the Philippines, it has been recognised by National Geographic as one of the best beaches in the world and taking in the contrast of the aquamarine waters against the dotted pink sand, it’s not difficult to see why. Visitors are regulated and should make advanced bookings and reservations through the tourism office before their visits. To cap off our experience of the vibrant Zamboanga Hermosa Festival, the Mascota Del Zamboanga competition was our final magnificent sight to behold, the definite icing on the cake from the series of exhilarating events leading up to this. An opulent fashion showdown that takes you through the ages, the competition took place at the Astoria Regency Convention Center and shone a spotlight on 15 intricate designs by local up-and-coming designers. The stunning mascotas, elaborate Spanish-inspired formal ball gowns worn by aristocratic Zamboangueño women back in the day, are showstoppers in their own right and absolutely iconic to say the least. A BiG shout-out to our friends in the Department of Tourism Region 9 for showing us around Zamboanga. For more information on Zamboanga, head over to their Facebook page at @tourism9zampen.

Puglia Pleasures Wan Zainal Abidin

There’s plenty to discover in Italy, and until recently the sleepy fishing towns that dot its northeastern coast was pretty much undiscovered by the masses. It has everything the Italophile in me craves: the burning Italian sun, an endless Mediterranean coastline, an abundance of fresh seafood and centuries old history. Last September I headed to Puglia to check out the newly launched Masseria Torre Maizza, a new feather in the cap for Rocco Forte Hotels.

A

groves and a sprawling, verdant garden. A seaside sanctuary that marries lush natural beauty with an elegant Italian aesthetic and the distinct, warm Forte

hospitality, it provides a perfect retreat to explore the stunning region of Puglia. There are plenty of hotels on this coast that can curate holiday fun, but nowhere could be smarter or more sparkling with sophistication than at Masseria Torre Maizza. The bright and airy rooms and suites are exquisitely decorated in a contemporary eclectic style and have views out to the terrace or to the gardens. The suite that I was assigned to has a private

terrace and an expansive roofdeck complete with a daybed for soaking in the beautiful Puglia sunsets in privacy. Lavish features like Italian floor tiles, oversized beds covered with luxurious Italian linen, finely crafted furniture and a mountain of pillows are perfectly complemented by sophisticated in-room amenities like rain shower, a deep bathtub that looks out to a private courtyard, Wi-Fi and an espresso machine. Exquisite local craftsmanship

throughout in the form of beautiful ceramics from the neighboring town of Grottaglie adds distinctive Italian detail that echoes the cultural uniqueness of the region. Measuring at 80 square metres with sweeping vistas of the entire resort and the ocean beyond, the two-bedroom suite offers guests the ultimate luxury experience. Housed in the distinct tower building by the entrance to the resort, it consists of two bedrooms, a lounge, a dining area in an open-plan style and a spacious sundeck with daybeds. Let the butler indulge your every whim by arranging spa treatments, private yoga sessions, and sunset cocktails prior to an intimate dinner on the private deck. A series of indulgent imbibing and dining experiences are available within its exceptionally

stylish surroundings, with an ambience that perfectly combines the laid-back spirit of Puglia with the marriage of Italian tastes and local flavours. Carosello, the main restaurant, offers the perfect setting to melt to into the chilled-out vibes of Puglia while savouring their locally inspired dishes. A simple of lunch of pizzas, pastas and salads are available at the resort’s pool bar and restaurant, located next to the bustling pool. But my favourite has to be the Bougainvillea Bar – an Instagram-worthy venue that features an outdoor terrace decked with pretty bamboo lounges and creeping bougainvilleas. Many of my evenings were spent here enjoying delicious pre-dinner cocktails prepared by Francesco, who helms the cavernous bar, while being entertained

by Carmelo – the resident entertainer who will get you tapping along to his repertoire of English and Italian songs. And if that doesn’t perk you up, his colour coordinated ensemble and cheerful antics will surely brighten your evening. It’s just a stroll into the azure waters of the Adriatic sea after a leisurely lunch at the nearby private beach club, where there is access to a wealth of water activities. Back at the resort, guests have the option to indulge in a 9-hole game of golf or whack some balls at the driving range. A leisurely horseback ride can be arranged, or you can just set up camp by the swimming pool that looks directly out onto acres of unspoiled landscapes studded with citrus and olive trees. For a little me-time, drop by the spa for a massage and a range of beauty treatments, or

work up a sweat amongst lemon trees at the open-air gym located next to the pool area. And when the yearn to dive into local culture kicks in, the resort offers a range of unique activities and excursions to provide guests with ample opportunities to explore its idyllic surroundings. Pay a visit to the picturesque Alberobello village and take a close look at the UN world heritage Trulli houses the village is known for, all of which are made entirely of local limestones. The village of Martina Franca, also known as festival town, is home to buildings with exquisite baroque details that have been the backdrop of the Summer Opera Festival since 1975. Also within easy distance is Locorotondo, and we encourage you to get lost exploring its labyrinthine alleys and walkways while soaking up the rich architectural details of this pretty little town, while the picturesque whitewashed buildings originating from Grecian times is sure to astound you over at Ostuni village. And that, frankly, is just touching on the surface of this Puglia region that offers a truly different Italian discovery.

Kedai Kopi D’Harith

Seri Maharaja Restaurant & Catering What sets Seri Maharaja Restaurant apart from your standard curry house is not the décor – a typical brightly lit restaurant with an array of Indian snacks on the counter (the television screens playing old Bollywood films is a nice touch, however). It’s not the service – fast, polite, perfunctory. What sets it apart is quite simply, the food. There are so many dishes in the menu that it’ll make your head spin, but to sum up: there are choices of mutton, beef, chicken, seafood and vegetable. There are also tandoori and briyani options, Platters to Share, plenty of bread options and Chef’s Specialties. The chicken briyani was fragrant and served with a heady dish of curry. If you’re here for breakfast, try the dosai - we had the plain dosai and the Family Dosai (twice the size, and the fun!) - a crispy pancake served with sambar and chutney. Delicious!

If you’ve ever been stuck looking for a parking spot at the Hj Munchit & Hjh Dyg Rapiah Complex at Kg Jaya Setia (Times Square area), chances are Kedai Kopi D’Harith is partly responsible for it. Ever since the restaurant opened, the building has been plagued with motorists circling the building in vain, looking for a space to park in. The little restaurant at the corner of the building is

nearly always full, but why go through all the trouble just to dine at a little restaurant sparse in decoration and equally spare with menu options? The one-word answer to that question: duck. The restaurant does Roasted Duck well, so well that at some days, they run out of duck before lunch. Not to worry, they do Roasted, BBQ and Steamed Chicken too! You can eat either meat with your choice of rice

Eats BN It doesn’t feel like Gadong Central in the sunny spacious room that is Eats BN, even with a window seat with a view of the hectic activity below. It’s a lovely, cosy spot – perfect for eating a meal and whiling away an hour chatting with friends. We didn’t come to chat, we came to eat, and helped by a recommendation from a few friends, we knew exactly

what it was we wanted to dine on: their Premium Hainanese Chicken Rice. The meal is served artfully arranged on a wooden tray that begs to be on your Instagram page. The standard chicken rice has many components, the sum of which decides the end result: the rice had better be fluffy and aromatic, the chicken tender, the chilli perfect, the soy

or noodles, there is no wrong option here. They also have a tiny selection of soups, and bigger offerings of their Roasted Duck and chicken options. And if you want that Roasted Duck fix but want to avoid the traffic jam altogether, not to worry, they do delivery now too!

sauce plentiful, and the accompanying clear soup tasty. Eats takes it a step further and adds a ginger scallion sauce, a family recipe that elevates it from a good dish to an excellent one. Possibly even a premium one. Eats claims to serve family favourites, and this makes sense because it is a family restaurant, and what you’re eating are family recipes. Except for their breakfast set menu, their ala carte menu is unapologetically Asian, and we do have family favourites here. Our Hokkien Mee and Kolo Mee were delicious, and topped off with a Sago Gula Melaka dessert, and we left Eats very happy bunnies. And if you’re not looking to brave the Gadong Central traffic circling the buildings for a parking space, here’s a useful tip: call the restaurant – they’ve got some parking near the restaurant that they’ll be happy to give to you!

These patties are only shaped upon customer order in order to maintain optimal freshness. No frozen or processed meats are used in Chubbs burgers. A must-try on the Chubbs menu is the OG Deluxe – a generously-portioned burger consisting of two beef patties complimented by crispy beef bacon, topped with the classic condiments – mustard and ketchup – for a quintessentially American burger.

MITA TEA SHOP You would think, at this stage in Brunei’s Bubble Tea craze, that one would be sick of brown sugar and tapioca balls. Not even close. Mita Tea Shop opened in Times Square Shopping Complex last May and local bubble tea lovers rejoiced over a new variety of bubble tea. A franchise that originates in Taiwan, we were informed that the beverages prepared here are made using traditional methods: brown sugar syrup is stirred by hand, raw pearls are cooked over low heat in brown sugar water, and everything is freshly cooked and free of additives. Sure enough, our Brown Sugar Bubble with Fresh Milk and our Milk Tea with bubbles (the former a favourite and the latter a favourite with the locals) had bubbles that had us furiously and delightfully chewing. Delicious! Grd Flr, Times Square Shopping Complex, Kg Jaya Setia, BSB IG: @mitateashopbrunei FB: MitaTeaShopBrunei

TELECOMMUNICATIONS FRIDAY PRAYER TIME

All retail, food and beverage outlets and business offices are closed between 12 noon and 2pm on Fridays to observe the Friday prayer time for Muslims.

Islamic Etiquette Although Islam is the state religion of Brunei Darussalam, it is also a country that prides itself on the diversity of its people – including their religions. Visitors are welcome to mosques, provided some etiquette is followed. In general, proper attire is required; women are required to cover their head, shoulders, and knees. Some mosques will provide simple robes and shawls to meet these standards. Shoes are to be removed before entering a mosque. Please do not pass in front of people in prayer, and do not touch the Al-Quran. Please ask for permission before taking photographs – particularly inside! Mosques are usually closed on Thursday and Friday, and during prayer times – your hotel, tour guide, or Muslim locals can help you determine a good time to visit.

Most public phones operate on prepaid calling cards which can be obtained in all major shopping areas and retail stores. Mobile prepaid SIM cards are also available for purchase at DST Communications Sdn Bhd (DST Com) and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd (PCSB) service counters as well as the respective authorised vendors’ stores.

Buses

There are three main bus terminals that operate regular services. The terminal along Jalan Tun Razak provides services within the city and its outskirts. For destinations south of the city (Papar, Beaufort, Tenom, Tambunan, Keningau), use the terminal near Padang Merdeka. For any other destinations north of the city and all the way to the east coast towns of Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu and Semporna, you have to take a bus to the Kota Kinabalu North Bus Terminal in Inanam and from there proceed to your destination of choice. Kinabalu Park is located en route from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan.

AIR TRAVEL

Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) is the second busiest airport in Malaysia and is the main terminal for Malaysia Airlines, MASWings, Firefly, Royal Brunei Airlines, Dragonair, Silkair and Asiana Airlines.

A free city-tram service is available for sightseeing around Kuching with pick up points at designated hotels. A daily bus service between Kuching and the airport operates from 6am-7pm and takes 40 minutes. The main intercity bus terminal is at Penrissen Bus Terminal southeast of Kuching. Ask Tourism Information Centres for bus timetables; a ‘green bus’ in the Kuching area goes to Santubong (SCV).

AIR TRAVEL

Kuching International Airport services airlines to destinations within Malaysia and overseas via Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia, Firefly, Tiger Airways, Royal Brunei, Silk Air and Batavia Air (Pontianak, Kalimantan). A network of services using smaller aircrafts provides access to remote destinations within Sarawak such as Bario, Mulu and Ba Kelalan.

Licensed money changers can be found at the airport, shopping malls, hotels and major banks. Some money changers may not accept foreign currency in small denomination or notes with a date or serial number that they don’t approve of.

MAR ONWARD 6

Pixar is back again to tug at our heart strings, this time with the story of two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, who just want to spend one last day with their father. Set in a suburban fantasy world, the two brothers go on a mission to find what magic there is left in the modern world to get to know their father, who died when they were both too young to remember him.

HARLEY QUINN THE GRUDGE

Starring Demian Bichir, John Cho and Lin Shaye

A remake of the US remake that was a remake of Ju-On, the Japanese film that scared everyone from taking a shower for a brief period. This one follows the story of a cursed house, and a vengeful ghost who murders everyone who enters it.

DOLITTLE

Starring Robert Downey Jr, Tom Holland and Emma Thompson

THE INVISIBLE MAN

Starring Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Storm Reid

Featuring one of Hollywood’s classic monsters, the movie tells a modern tale of dark obsession. Cecilia Klass has escaped from her abusive scientist ex-boyfriend and gone into hiding, only to be later informed that he committed suicide and left her a fortune. 56

Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

Starring Margot Robbie, Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead

FEB 28

The fabulous, kooky, beautiful and psychotic Harley Quinn gets her own movie this time around. Since the events of the Suicide Squad, the brash maybe-villain-maybe-heroine has split up with The Joker and finds herself teaming up with a group of asskicking heroines to save a young girl from the clutches of the Black Mask, an evil crime lord in Gotham City.

MULAN

Starring Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen and Jet Li

Disney’s live-action Mulan is a loose remake of the famous 1998 animated movie of the same movie, with the same premise. Hua Mulan masquerades as a man in the Imperial Army to replace her ailing father, and this is where similarities end. This is not a musical, rather a full-scale martial arts epic, but we’re still very excited to see this on the big screen.
