VIRGINIA ODP TAKES FRANCE!

Four Virginia ODP teams recently returned from a successful eight-day tour of eastern France. The 2011 and 2010 boys, along with the 2011 and 2009 girls each played a total of four games in some of the most beautiful areas of the country.

After landing in Lyon, the VYSA teams traveled 90 minutes away to the picturesque city of Annecy Once the teams settled in and trained, they played two games while residing in a quaint, family-run hotel. The sixteen-member staff included a fully certified trainer, an orthopedic surgeon and a doctor of sports psychology - the internationally renowned Dr Dan Freigang To our knowledge, no other youth soccer program travels with a sports psychologist. Dr. Freigang was able to lead multiple meetings with the teams and individual players to help teach them concepts such as how to utilize coping skills, overcome adversity and employ breathing techniques when under pressure. When a young player is dealing with international travel, different foods, new customs, time changes, and high-level opposition, it’s crucial that they are provided a skill set that can help them navigate this potentially bumpy road

After their stay in Annecy, the teams enjoyed a day of sightseeing in Geneva All four ODP teams then returned to Lyon (the culinary capital of Europe) for the final two games on the schedule. The boys’ teams had the unique experience of spending a full day with French national identified players of the Lyon Region. In the morning two French players combined with two Virginia players were put together in a four-person team to compete in a skills competition. After lunch, those same teams then stayed together to compete in a history/geography quiz where the winning team took home some generous gifts from the French Football Federation The day culminated in full-sided matches against their FFF counterpart- an incredible experience for everyone involved.

The girls’ teams competed against Bourg-Perronas FC and the famous FC Lyon club After each of the games, the players were hosted in the club house for food, refreshments, and the obvious exchange of social media sites. Great conversations and a lifetime of memories for the Virginia ODP girls' teams who acquitted themselves exceedingly well in every match With some additional sight-seeing and gift shopping, the group was ready to return to the United States.

This International trip to France was a tremendous experience for all the players and staff. Next year will be the 19th International trip for Virginia ODP Teams and with Easter coming early in March, it lends itself to be somewhere warm.
