The Olympic Development Program (ODP) is a nationwide player identification, training, and showcase initiative implemented by all 55 state associations. Players can either try out or be scouted into the program, where they have the opportunity to train and compete with other toplevel athletes and coaches. The ultimate goal is to represent their state and potentially be selected for the East Region Team.
In Virginia this past year, open tryouts were held across our five districts: North, Central, West Central, West, and the Beach. In the North district alone, nearly 500 players participated. Following fall district training sessions, all districts gathered at the state training center (PVSTC) in Fredericksburg There, 297 boys and 264 girls the highest numbers since before COVID were identified for the state training pools.
In January, the teams traveled to North Carolina to compete in the NC Friendlies against opponents from NC, SC, TN, and Georgia. This event provided a great earlyseason opportunity to evaluate the players in action. Unfortunately, the February Virginia Friendlies were canceled due to inclement weather, but player assessments continued the following weekend through inter-team scrimmages.
A highlight of the year was the 19th international trip, held around Easter. The 2011 and 2010 boys and the 2011 and 2009 girls traveled to Lyon, France for an eight-day tour, competing against French and Swiss teams. Alongside the 72 players, we brought a medical doctor, a certified athletic trainer, and a nationally renowned sports psychologist who helped the athletes develop coping strategies for traveling and performing abroad without their parents—an exceptional and memorable experience
As of this writing, all six age groups (2013–2008) are preparing to compete in this weekend’s Region Tournament. The girls will play in Pennsylvania and the boys in New Jersey, each vying for a spot in the Region Camp, which will be held in Connecticut in July
Tryouts for next year’s ODP program are now posted on the VYSA website: https://www.vysa.com/odp-tryouts/. Please check the dates, times, and locations for your area, and register your son or daughter at a nearby site.
