FireFit – Sport at a Glance

The FireFit Championships is described by Men’s Fitness magazine as “the toughest two minutes in sport” due to the strength, aerobic, and anaerobic capabilities needed to finish the challenge. Firefighters and Pre-Service Firefighter college students compete against Canadian and International fire departments, as they push past physical and mental limits by demonstrating firefighting skills against the clock.

The competition extends beyond physical fitness; it embodies team work, sportsmanship, and a commitment to overall firefighter health and wellness. The latter being a core issue at the forefront of firefighter injury and death in Canada. The intense training required to compete, directly transfers to functional firefighter fitness on the fire ground. The supportive FireFit community that is comprised of firefighters from across the world is unique and helps to develop a sense of selfbelief and obstacle mitigation both on and off the course. The sport strongly supports firefighter wellness through competitions, mental health programs, and a national network of people and organizations. This helps to ensure firefighters have the tools to succeed at overcoming challenges at, and after, emergency calls.

A course comprised of six grueling physical tasks test the overall fitness levels of firefighters. Men and women compete on the same course, all wearing approximately 50lbs of firefighting gear.

History of Team

The Fleming FireFit Combat Team was created in 2014 by firefighter, Shawna Coulter For ten years, all coaching, marketing, and administration has been provided soley on a volunteer bases by Coulter. Many additional volunteer coaches assist in training and team management. As emphasized by Coulter, “By training and competing in this sport, it has made me a better firefighter. Not only does the training and course obstacles mimic what you will see on the fire ground, but it trains you to believe in your capabilities to take on any challenge, realizing what your body and your mind are really capable of.

How you view yourself, your abilities, and how you formulate goals and the steps to achieve them are embedded in how your approach this sport. This carries forth to your career and your life. Perseverance, work ethic, and self-belief can break down barriers to any obstacle. This is the number one thing we teach our team members.”

International Success Story

We took on the challenge to compete against the most physically fit firefighters across Canada with a team comprised of rookie students. What we have been able to achieve over the past ten years has been unprecedented.

105 Regional Medals

21 National Canadian Championship titles and medals

2 World Championshp Medals

Hiring Impact

The fire service is reported to be one of the most competitive job markets to obtain employment in and, with high numbers of graduates generated yearly through colleges across Canada, the pressure increases. As a result, we have tracked statistical data since 2014 to see how our team-members compare to non-team participants in the PreService Firefighting Programs. Hiring rates for team members are over double the average hiring rate of Pre-Service Firefighting student graduates in Ontario within the same time perimeters. Statistics for non team individuals are 34-41%.

Team alumni hiring statistics:

Men: Total working within emergency services – 85%

- 76% are full-time employed directly within the industry (firefighting and/or EMS)

- 9% are part-time employed directly within their industry

Females: Total working within emergency services - 88%

- 83% are full-time employed directly within the industry (firefighting and/or EMS)

- 5% are part-time employed directly within the industry

Please note only 6% of firefighters in Canada are female. Only 4% of firefighters in the USA are female. Over half of our now full-time firefighter team alumni success stories are women. The significance of this figure is immense. We are providing tools and resources for an increased number of women to enter this industry with exceptional success rates.

Where our dollars go…

1. Registrations: Our number one priority is supporting the high cost of competition registrations for our athletes. This is the biggest impediment for participation and, without support, there is a huge disparity in access to this opportunity.

2. Accomodation: The second largest expense our team

3. Equipment: This can assist in replacing and repairing broken equipment, helping subsidize the cost of gloves for student athletes, and/or the purchase of team tshirts.

Associate Supporter Partnership - $500

Providing general assistance to team operations. Collective resources to aid in registrations, accommodation, and/or equipment. Should an organization have a specific area that they wish to support, it will be happily accommodated and their contribution earmarked for this area of support.
