Dear Reader, Welcome to the October edition of The Chiswick Magazine.

October seems slightly quiet compared to all of the excitement in W4 last month. But fear not, the much-loved Tabard Theatre has been revamped and renamed as the Chiswick Playhouse - announcing a very exciting programme for the winter months. I for one can’t wait to see some of the amazing things they have in store, a trip to the theatre is the perfect way to spend a winter’s night for me! Who knows I may even see one or two of you in the bar afterwards for a little drink…

The Chiswick Diary Chiswick Book Festival ‘goes from strength to strength’ Hundreds of people attended this year’s Chiswick Book Festival to hear speakers such as Cressida Cowell, Max Hastings, AN Wilson and Jane Garvey, with many proclaiming it ‘the best yet’. The Festival ended at Gunnersbury Park and Museum in Ealing, the first time it has held an event outside Chiswick W4.

“Gunnersbury was one of two new venues this year, along with Orchard House School, and both proved great innovations” said Festival director Torin Douglas. “We also introduced a new Children’s Marquee and a second Cookbook marquee and we sold over 5,000 tickets – 25 per cent more than last year.”

The Chiswick Diary There were full houses at Chiswick House, where AN Wilson spoke about Prince Albert: The Man Who Saved the Monarchy; at Waterstones for the Local Authors Party; in St Michael & All Angels Church, to hear children’s laureate Cressida Cowell, Max Hastings on the Dambusters raid and David Nott, The War Doctor; in the Parish Hall, for Ken Livingstone’s London and four WW2 events, The Mountbattens, Appeasing Hitler, and Our Man in New York; at Orchard House School, for Women In The Archers and A Woman of No Importance; at the ArtsEd Theatre, for Remembering Richard Briers; and the London Buddhist Vihara for the Young People’s Poetry Prizegiving and WB Yeats.

Chiswick’s community spirit at its best at Together on the Terrace Chiswick’s community spirit was shown at its best at the Together on the Terrace Street Festival on Sunday, 15 September.

Brought to us by Abundance London & the Cookbook Festival, the car-free celebration was a resounding success. As promised, Sir Peter Blake unveiled the first W4th Plinth, which happened to be his Chiswick Empire Theatre. This marked the start of the W4th Plinth Art Project which will be a huge changing image open to artists and voted for by the public. As well as this, Abundance London’s guerrilla garden awards 2019 were presented at the Festival. This year’s awards were sponsored by the author Polly Devlin OBE, who also presented the awards.

COMING UP Hogarth Singers hold popular events Hogarth Singers is a friendly, sociable choir based in Chiswick. On Friday, 18 October, they will be holding their popular Quiz Evening, at St Michael and All Angels. Eyes down at 7.30pm, tickets are £10 each, including refreshments.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change at the Chiswick Playhouse Launching Chiswick Playhouse’s inaugural season, from 30th October to 30th November, is the UK premiere of the revamped, brand-new version of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. After playing over 5,000 performances off-Broadway, this hilarious and poignant musical comedy was substantially re-written in 2018 to reflect the challenges facing the romantics of today. It is now presented for the first time in the UK with a stellar West End cast and direction from Charlotte Westenra (Kiss of the Spiderman, Donmar Warehouse; Frost/Nixon, Michael Grandage Company as Associate Director).

Fireworks Extravaganza 2019 at Chiswick Park The annual Chiswick Park Enjoy-Work fireworks display is back on Thursday, 7 November 2019. The event is free to attend and open to the local community.

Pre-show entertainment and food stalls will be available from 5.45pm to keep the crowd busy until the fireworks display begins at 7pm.

This year, Shooting Star Children’s Hospices reignite their hottest event - the Fire Walk. It will take place at Chiswick Park at 6pm ahead of the spectacular display.

The Fire Walk is a truly unforgettable experience – brave souls walk across burning embers of up to 1200F. The event requires no training, just a spark of courage and determination, and is a unique way to help support the local children’s hospice charity.

Chiswick House & Gardens Trust celebrates London in Bloom success

The Chiswick House and Gardens Trust has once again excelled at the London in Bloom Awards.

London in Bloom provides regional awards and forms part of the Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom campaign. Formed in 1967 over 350 parks, gardens and communities have been judged this summer across London. The annual awards are where London in Bloom celebrates the efforts of communities, parks and individuals who do so much to make London a special place to live, work and visit.

The Chiswick House and Gardens Trust entered the London in Bloom Heritage Parks and Gardens category and London in Bloom Walled Garden of the Year category.

They have been awarded the following London in Bloom Awards: • Heritage Parks & Gardens of the Year 2019 – Gold and overall category winner • Walled Garden of the year 2019 – Gold and overall category winner • Our Community 2019 – Gold – The Chiswick House Kitchen Garden Volunteers • Our Community 2019 – Silver Gilt – Goosefoot Volunteers • RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Award’ for the Chiswick House & Gardens Goosefoot Volunteers – Thriving • RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Award’ for the Chiswick House Kitchen Garden Volunteers – Outstanding • LIB Allotment Site Award 2019 • RHS IYN National Certificate of Distinction - The Kitchen Garden Volunteers.

This is the second year that the Trust has been awarded the overall category winner in the Walled Garden Award and the fourth consecutive year which it has won the Heritage Park of the Year Award. The team also picked up The LIB Allotment Site Award 2019, a discretionary award from the LIB Trustees given to one entry across London.

The 64-acre Grade I listed Estate is maintained by a small team comprising of the Garden Estate Manager, a Kitchen Gardener, two Gardeners and one Ranger who work with over 50 volunteers to garden the walled garden, formal gardens and conservation works throughout. In partnership with Head Gardener and Gavin Jones Grounds Maintenance who maintain all lawns, hedges, sports facilities and litter.

Geraldine King, CHGT Garden Estate Manager, commented: ‘‘I am honoured to lead a passionate and dedicated team of gardeners and volunteers. Their endeavours have been rewarded with these titles and results. The support of all of the Trust team, Gavin Jones and our partnerships with various other organisations locally and nationally have also been recognised. What a fantastic team!’’

Caroline Busby, CHGT Director, commented: ‘‘Chiswick House & Gardens are delighted to once again be recognised for the hard work and care taken to maintain this heritage estate. We are very proud to have achieved so many awards this year and at such a high standard and thank all those who contributed to the success.”

Ballet4Life, having been around for such a long time is an integrated part of the Chiswick community with a huge local following. ‘‘The community supports and seems to like us,’’ she beams. The dance company has ten freelance contractors who are very well liked by those who attend the classes and many friendships have been formed thanks to Ballet4Life. ‘‘We’re like a little family,’’ Donna says.

Donna is very much a part of the local community herself - with Ballet4Life sponsoring the Friday Lunchtime Organ Season 2019 at St Michael & All Angels Church as well as being a long term sponsor of the Bedford Park Festival. She is also part of Chiswick Together, which is a group of local organisations and volunteers who work to combat loneliness and encourage Chiswick residents to connect.

C

hiswick’s Ballet4Life is celebrating fifteen years of providing adult ballet classes to non-professionals in west London. I met with the woman behind it all, Chiswick resident and international dance artist Donna Schoenherr one chilly September afternoon.

Donna came to Chiswick from the United States twenty four years ago when her husband got a job in London. The company he worked for arranged for an agency to sort out a place to live - after some insistence from Donna, they were taken to a place where ‘artist types live’ and that place was Chiswick. ‘‘When we drove around the High Road I just fell in love with it,’’ Donna happily explains. Twenty four years later, they haven’t left and Donna’s love for the area is clear as soon as you meet her. ‘‘I feel the community spirit of Chiswick very much,’’ she adds.

Before Ballet4Life, Donna had been a professional dancer and travelled the world as a teacher. She decided she needed a change when she was embarking on a new journey of motherhood and she wanted to do something local whilst still remaining involved in the dance industry.

She realised there was a gap in the market and wanted to teach the love of the art form to non-professional adults.

Another creation of Donna’s is the inspirational Move into Wellbeing which was formed five years ago and became a registered charity around two and a half years ago. Through this charity, classes are held for adults who have Parkinson’s or other mobility issues. The charity has a personal link for Donna as it was partly inspired by her

father who had Parkinson’s for thirty years. Donna knew of colleagues who had created similar programmes to provide physical or mental therapy in the United States and felt inspired to create something which would have the power to improve lives locally.

The first visit to Move into Wellbeing is always free and after that all Donna asks for is a £5 or £8 donation.The essential carers who need to attend with the participant are always free of charge. Her aim is for the classes to be free one day and at the moment they take individual situations into consideration as best as they can. ‘‘I don’t want money to ever be an issue that would prevent someone to try it,’’ she tells me.

In the summer, the charity received a prestigious Atul Pathak Community Award for service to the community.

Donna completed the application after being recommended by Councillor Andrew Steed. ‘‘I would’ve been happy if we made through the first round,’’ laughs Donna.

Ballet4Life has also received a number of awards including at the Hounslow Business Awards. Most recently, they were shortlisted for the One Dance UK’s People’s Choice Award.

Green Up Gunnersbury gets off to a cracking start

he WCGS has launched a campaign to encourage residents and businesses to take pride in the neighbourhood and become more actively involved in making the area a greener, healthier place to live.

Cultivate London, a charity that helps young people into employment via horticulture, created the planters from recycled pallets and, together with an enthusiastic group of local residents, they planted up the raised beds

In March last year the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government allocated a further £9.75 million for local authorities and community groups to clean up their high streets and town centres (building on a much larger Future High Streets Fund). Chiswick High Road’s share of this was £5,000, allocated via London Borough of Hounslow’s Business Services & Investment Department, and Abundance London proposed several initiatives to improve the area:

While it is clear that these small improvements can enhance civic pride, provide some points of bio-diversity and natural beauty, Abundance say it is clear they are not going to solve the ‘‘overarching problems’’ of the High Road. Nevertheless, enhancing our street environment and making it a pleasant place to shop, sit and visit is a small contribution. Abundance is on track to deliver these improvements.

I

met with the wonderful Aubrey several weeks ago and it’s been a pleasure to work with him to create this month’s Photo Story. It was possible for us to bring this story to life because of Instagram. Our page @thechiswickmagazine has been properly active since April this year and naturally we came across each other’s paths. Both of us following and hashtagging the likes of #w4, #chiswick and #westlondon, amongst the many other hashtags related to Chiswick and the surrounding areas, homes and lifestyle.

Aubrey really caught our interest because he has such a great eye for photography. All of his photos are taken on his Iphone. Aubrey is also incredibly passionate about Chiswick and our community. He’s an early riser and believes it’s the best way to start the day and a good way to a healthy life. If you’re waking up after a decent night’s sleep and you’re still tired then you need to reassess a few things because you should wake up feeling energised and ready for the day.

Waking up as early as 4am somedays, Aubrey is able to capture beautiful images of the River Thames, the stunning colours from the sunrise, and the way the tide comes up over Chiswick Riverside. We are spoilt in Chiswick with gorgeous houses and Aubrey photographs them perfectly.

The large red bricked homes and grand arches above the front door and flowers for example hydrangeas flowering. Before his Instagram account @aubrey.w4 began, his posting outlet was Facebook.

There came a time when his friends got fed up of their newsfeeds being inundated with photos of Chiswick from Aubrey that they suggested and sparked the idea for Aubrey to move over to Instagram. We’re so pleased he did.

Encouraging Chiswick to talk By Áine McGinty

N

icholas Rose & Associates Counselling has been providing local people with a safe haven to discuss their thoughts, feelings and issues for around ten years now. Tucked away above The Cove Spa on Chiswick High Road, some people might not even know they’re there but thankfully they are there working to help local people. We catch up with Nicholas to find out more about the services on offer.

Nicholas himself is a psychotherapist, counsellor and couple’s counsellor - registered with the UKCP, UKRCP and accredited by the BACP. It will be fifteen years this year that Nicholas himself has been seeing people and talking to them about their lives

and their concerns. ‘‘When I was young I was always really interested in hearing the stories that people wanted to tell me about their lives. I always loved listening to people and hearing about the parts of people’s lives that you don’t normally hear,’’ Nicholas says. He adds that people are quick to talk about the joys in their life, like their holidays and their children, but to have deeper conversations where they discuss what makes them anxious is rare. He initially studied marketing because of the psychology side to it before taking the chance to make a career change. ‘‘After fifteen years in marketing and the corporate world, I just realised I was far more interested in how people were personally than whether they were going to buy something or not,’’ he says.

Nicholas Rose & Associates are a team of eleven therapists. They work with adults and couples and have specialist therapists to work with children, young people and families. ‘‘As a group of eleven we have experience of working with a wide range of issues so it means that if somebody is struggling and they’re concerned and a bit nervous about finding the right person, there’s usually someone here that has experience of working with that concern,’’ Nicholas tells us. And because they work together, they hope they can make it easier for people near and maybe even far to access counselling and therapy.

They keep all of the local GPs informed about what they’re doing as well as Nicholas writing a column for The Chiswick Herald. Nicholas says it’s important that local people are able to come to see them. ‘‘It’s quite usual to see a therapist on a weekly basis and sometimes more than once a week and it’s a bit like anything when it comes

to looking after us, like going to yoga and a gym, if it’s too far away, it starts to make it a bit problematic,’’ he adds.

We’re lucky to have one so close to home. One train ride from Gunnersbury or Turnham Green or one bus to Richmond and you’ll find yourself in chocolate heaven! The Richmond store quite literally looks like something out of Willy Wonker with the beautiful and elegant packaging and trillions of tasty chocolates inside!

Now, what would be more exciting than boxes and buckets and trays of chocolate ... well that would be a delicious new autumn chocolate collection from Venchi!

enchi was founded in 1878

by Silvano Venchi. At the age of 16 Silvano began creating chocolates in his pastry shop in Cuneo. Not long after the chocolates were available in the shop it became the most famous in the city. It was appreciated for its extraordinary quality of ingredients. A real ‘‘chocolate boutique.’’ Venchi is now open on almost every street in Italy due to popularity and demand and exceptional chocolate creations.

The new chocolates include flavours ranging from rich gin infused cream encased in milk chocolate to salted truffles filled with pistachios, almonds and Piedmont hazelnuts, all expertly paired with a gin cocktail by Bordiga 1888.

Also in the new collection you’ll taste unusual and unexpected mixtures of ingredients that work very well together for example fig and mascarpone cream, and after meeting a Venchi Chocolatier at their Covent Garden store I learnt a great tip, to add a squeeze of lime to your dark chocolate for an added kick and enchantment to the flavour, divine! Meet the Artist

This month I’d like to introduce Jesse Brown. Jesse is an artist and cartoonist from London. We came across his illustrations and absolutely loved them. Over the last year he’s made a nervous career change from being a graphic designer to making things work out for him as an illustrator, and thankfully he has a great network and the power of word of mouth has been on his side.

Jesse’s work is a visual diary of what he sees. That includes buildings, locations, people and animals. He uses humour in many of his illustrations to create funny scenes and uses ink and watercolour to create his drawings which are quick and spontaneous to put on paper, but re-done several times to get them right.

Jesse is very familiar with Chiswick, he has a lot of family that live here and finds himself here a lot of the time. His father has a background in architecture, and his mother in interior design, so the creativity clearly runs in the family.

Jesse has shown a series of illustrations at Gail’s Bakery in Chiswick over the past year. Gail’s collaborates with Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery to commission artists for their cafes across London and Jesse made the cut!

His work is currently exhibiting at The Hogarth Club Chiswick, until the 31st Dec 2019. The paintings are due to change a couple of times to show off various pieces, so if you pop by each month over the course of the rest of the year you’ll see a variety of paintings by Jesse in there.

There has been freedom and creativity in illustration, and commissions have included menus and wine labels for many hotels including Claridge’s, The Connaught London, Marriott and further commissions for McQueens flowers who supply flowers for Claridge’s.

People go to him because they like his style, and he can work from briefs with little direction and produce a great piece. People have commissioned Jesse to do family portraits and live drawings at events, weddings and parties in London and Italy.

Jesse also works with homeless charity The Connection at St Martin-in-theFields in Trafalgar Square, illustrating for them, but also helping in the art therapy room when he can.

For future projects Jesse wants to work with more whisky and wine labels, and he is most interested in illustrating children’s books and recipe books.

Edinburgh Fringe hit comes to Chiswick

Musical comedy and Edinburgh Fringe hit Paradise Lodge is coming to Chiswick.

Paradise Lodge will actually be the last show performed at the Tabard Theatre before it officially becomes the Chiswick Playhouse. We spoke to actor and writer Steve ahead of the play’s London run.

Dysfunctional duo ‘The Doodlebugs’ are performing in a care home, they fall apart and the audience then meet the characters living in the care home, finding out how they were affected by different conditions of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Paradise Lodge was inspired by Steve’s own experience of caring for his mother-in-law Dorothy, who was living with Dementia. Steve, being an actor by trade, was the one at home as his wife worked full-time and so spent a lot of time with Dorothy and trying, he says, ‘‘to make sense of the condition.’’ After Dorothy passed away, Steve went back to the notes he had been taking and Paradise Lodge was born.

The play enjoyed huge success at the Edinburgh Fringe with great feedback from audiences and good reviews. This led to the Tabard Theatre, hearing about the play, getting in touch and it branching out to west London. In Edinburgh, they got in touch with local care homes as well as raising over £1000 for Alzheimer Scotland- with audience members donating at the door. Steve told The Chiswick Magazine that he wanted to visit care homes and raise money to give something back and make a difference, not just turn up, do the play and go home.

In Chiswick, they will be collecting for Alzheimer’s UK as well as handing out information cards with helpful numbers for those who have been affected by the condition. As well as this, they will be performing in local care homes across Chiswick, Acton and Hammersmith bringing the magic of theatre to those who are unable to come to them.

Of course, Paradise Lodge takes a look at life for those suffering with a serious and life-changing condition but Steve promises an evening watching the play will not be all doom and gloom. When asked why people should come along to see the play, he quickly answers. ‘‘First and foremost for a good night out, to have a laugh and be moved.’’

as being one about Dementia, they expect the latter but the play isn’t one dimensional and will have audience members laughing as well as singing along to Beyoncé, Steve promises.

One of Steve’s aims for the play is to get people talking more about the impact that such a debilitating illness can have on sufferers and their families.

He wants people to know they’re not alone in dealing with the condition - in fact, audience members who can relate to the subject and head along to see Paradise Lodge always come out and voice their appreciation. But you don’t have to relate to it to connect with the play. ‘‘Everyone finds something in it,’’ he says. ‘‘We’re looking forward to coming to lovely Chiswick and the big smoke,’’ Steve says before we say goodbye, adding that he wants to hear people’s own stories about such conditions so don’t be afraid to chat to him in the bar afterwards. This certainly sounds like one not to miss…

Art, Form and Function at Joanna Bird Contemporary Collections 30 October – 20 November 2019

T

his 25th anniversary exhibition is to celebrate Joanna Bird’s life as a gallery owner exploring decorative objects and fine art over the last 30 years. The show seeks to capture an enlightened world where beautiful objects appeal and amuse - some charmingly suggest whilst others demand attention - to be handled, utilised, arranged, hung high, touched and dwelt upon.

An opportunity to absorb deeply considered objects made with integrity is a life enriching experience. These objects are at the heart of the matter, enduring beauty is never to be underestimated for the pleasure it can bestow.

Each of us has a favourite cup, plate, teapot or bowl to which our eye and hand involuntarily reach out. I walked in and sat down for a brief moment before Katie welcomed me and we got chatting about what to do with my hair. The ends were frazzled and straggly and I have to admit it looked slightly unkempt but I didn’t want to lose much of the length, but it was clear I needed to get my hair cut more often.

atie Allen’s boutique hair salon Mayfive is located on the beautiful Devonshire Road, Chiswick, W4. Katie was looking for a stunning location in west London for her salon and she visited several of the surrounding areas for example Acton and Ealing on her search, but they didn’t have quite what Katie was looking for. When the unit on Devonshire Road became available she knew it was the right place and she had a good feeling about it.

Devonshire Road is a special road in Chiswick, to me, especially as I grew up in the area and as a child I loved visiting the pet store. Of course, before my haircut I went in to see if they had any bunny rabbits and they did, and I bought my sister’s dog some tasty treats! As well as the pet shop and Mayfive you’ll find other lovely local businesses; clothing shops, cafes and the incredible Vinoteca restaurant.

Moving on... Mayfive is youthful, modern and vibrant. I walked into a lovely space with beautiful plants creating lots of greenery and a nice atmosphere! Sadly the little sausage dog that I’d seen on their Mayfive Instagram page wasn’t around so hopefully I get to meet him next time.

Katie previously worked for Charles Worthington before she opened Mayfive, I got the impression she has years of experience and is greatly skilled in hairdressing. I had also heard from someone on a night out the week before that Mayfive are really good at what they do and know what they are doing when it comes to colour and they do a lot of balayage, highlights and lowlights. That person worked within the hair industry, what a small world. Balayage is one of the most recent and popular, on trend looks to colour your hair.

It’s so popular because it’s blended in a way that there is no harsh regrowth lines and can look incredibly glossy and glamorous.

I had my hair washed, and a massage followed by a relaxing steamed towel treatment. The treatment had a nice fresh herbal scent to it and it was bliss to be able to lounge in the chair with the steam towel on, close my eyes and take a minute to decompress and have a very good massage from the chair that gently massaged my back, unlike those dreadful ones that beat and poke your back and are too forceful.

Katie started to cut my hair and by the end of my haircut it didn’t seem like she took much off but the end results were great. She had kept the length and made my hair look fuller and it was noticeably in better condition with the wispy ends gone. Katie works really quickly and confidently and the appointment was over sooner than I wanted. It’s been over a month now since my hair cut and my hair is in great condition, especially the ends as it’s fuller now and looks healthier and thicker than before.

World Mental Health Day:

Brentford FC’s psychologist delivers a well-being workshop to young carers

B

rentford FC’s psychologist, Michael Caulfield, delivered his first ever well-being workshop to young carers at the beginning of the month.

The workshop, which culminated in a “Walk and Talk” around Griffin Park, provided the young carers with techniques to manage stress.

Held at Griffin Park in conjunction with World Mental Health Day this month (10 October), the workshop aimed to provide support for young carers while simultaneously raising awareness of the stress and anxiety many young carers face.

The Young Carers Project, delivered by the Club’s award-winning Community Sports Trust, offers

and Hounslow Council, Brentford FC Community Sports Trust’s Young Carers Project offers young people the opportunity to learn new skills and gain in confidence on a weekly basis. The projects include: after-school homework clubs; lunchtime clubs; youth clubs, fortnightly swimming clubs and day trips during the school holidays.

Councillor Yvonne Johnson, Ealing Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Whether as family or friends, teachers or healthcare professionals, we all have a role to play in supporting young people through challenging times.

One of Brentford’s most well-known players, Sergi Canos, was on hand to offer his own wisdom on how to manage stress. And with the EFL committed to raising awareness of mental health through its official charity partner Mind, Brentford FC are leading the way in raising awareness of mental health both on and off the football pitch.

Speaking about attending the workshop, the Spanish player said: “From being at this workshop today, I had no idea the difficulties young carers faced looking after a family member. Using my platform

as a professional footballer, I hope I have given young carers a voice and reminded them they are not alone and we are here to help them.”

With 80% of young carers carrying out caring duties every day or most days of the week, the workshop aimed to highlight the importance of walking, having a good night’s sleep and exercising regularly.

Eleven-year-old Jessica McDonald, a young carer for her brother, credits the project with helping her talk more openly, she said: “It is good to meet people who are going through the same experience as you and understand what it’s like to look after someone with an illness or additional needs.

“I have started to talk more to my family about things and I think my confidence has improved.”

“The council is proud to be running a mental health first aid programme in our schools to help staff identify and support children struggling with their mental health.

“And I am very pleased the Young Carers project, delivered with Brentford FC’s Community Sports Trust, is providing support to these exceptional young people who, typically, have taken on far more responsibility at home than most others the same age.

“Everyone needs help sometimes and we should all feel comfortable asking for it – especially young people. Having sports professionals from the football club to reiterate this message in an accessible way to young people is so important in letting them know they are not alone.”

he fun started in Fjällbacka harbour on the west coast of Sweden. They whisked us across to the Väderöarna, a scatter of islands too small for many maps, at James Bond pace in 25 minutes.

From flat-out fury, our boat’s speed fell in an instant to a slow crawl as we reached the tiny jetty. For the next 48 hours we didn’t go faster than 2 mph.

There are around 1,500 rock-carving sites in Northern Bohuslän.

The parish of Tanum alone contains 360. Many are connected by signposted paths trailing through the woods. The splendid Vitlycke Museum tells the story of this World Heritage Site in detail.

The Väderöarna (Weather Islands), population about 10, are too small and hilly for even a track, let alone a car. Our progress around the principal one was mainly by jumping from rock to rock, and climbing the grassy hills to glimpse basking seals.

These are the most westerly of the 8000 little islands pebble-dashed along the Bohuslän Archipelago, 125 quiet miles of fjords and inlets stretching from Gothenburg to the Norwegian border.

Before this trip I used to mentally bookmark Sweden under elegant design, linguistic skill and Ikea’s comical names for household items, as well as its bargain meatball menus. To my shame I had quite overlooked its fabulous rural peace.

We had flown to Gothenburg the day before. London City Airport, small and manageable, to the north of the city, promises quick getaways. So less than half an hour after landing we were bowling along on serenely empty roads, through rich farmland under wooded hills.

Efficient car ferries hurried us across the occasional river that stood in the way in minutes. We passed through the occasional little town, neat huddles of low houses with colourful roofs, a quay, some good seafood restaurants and a few small hotels.

Our first night was in Fjällbacka, the small town where Ingrid Bergman had a holiday home. There’s a statue of the radiant actress in the quay-side garden. We sampled a fittingly Bergman-esque romantic hideaway, the Hotel Strandflickornas in nearby Lysekil. They put us in one of the two waterside suites. In the late, late light of the Swedish midsummer evening we sat on our private jetty over the gently lapping waves, in a bay of pink granite rocks watching the eider ducks ride the tide. It hasn’t quite the same ring, but, in homage to Ingrid, we’ll always have Lysekil.

The next day we made that action-movie crossing from Fjällbacka to the most westerly of those many islands, the Väderöarna of my opening paragraph.

There is only one place to stay on Väderöarna, the Väderöarnas Pensionat, After our hop round the island, we returned there for afternoon tea, set outside on the jetty. The waterside outdoor hot tub was steamily enticing.

Technically the Pensionat is a no-stars-at-all accommodation. You reach the shared toilets and showers on creaky wooden floors. But it was neat and comfy, and its other virtues are beyond any conventional hotel star rating.

You won’t find seaside peace much deeper than this. Our bedroom had a dreamy view over a serene little inlet. We watched the terns spear into the harbour water for fish before our excellent dinner of local seafood.

Solitude is a precious asset in Sweden. Swedish University researchers recently claimed to have proved the stress-busting attributes of this serene landscape of islands and inlets. They invited five people in stressful jobs to spend 72 hours in glass-sided cabins. The readings they took after these calming breaks showed significant anxiety reductions. Now the cabins are available for anyone to hire.

Back on the mainland, but still on the coast, our next call was to one of the world’s earliest open-air art galleries, in the woods at Tanum.

The Tourist Board suggests a seven day itinerary, which includes places to stay, island-hopping, bicycle trips on lonely roads, miles of good wild walking, and kayaking excursions.

You can even join a fishing boat to gather the exquisite local shellfish, a feature in most restaurants.

Bohuslän is quiet enough to make driving a rare pleasure, on new and, during our visit, almost empty motorways. One service station offered a three mile guided path into the woods, as if to offset our non-existent driving stress. (If you aren’t driving there are good bus and train services back to Gothenburg.)

It was time for another island. Once again we left our car on the mainland, at the small port of Strömstad, then made the 50 minute ferry crossing to the Koster Islands. There you define traffic chaos as two cyclists meeting at a remote countryside crossroads, unsure who goes first.

We spent a day of easy pedalling (local hotels offer free bikes) around this car-free utopia, on tracks snaking through fields and woods. We crept up on yellowhammers and wheatears, then diverted to tranquil bays and harbours.

From the island’s only hill, opposite a white, wooden church, we looked over dozens of islets, part of Sweden’s first marine nature reserve, designated in 2009. Lunch was in the café at nearby Kosters Trädgårdar, recently given “Taste of West Sweden” listing, where they grow everything on the menu.

Our island tally was still only three in six days. At this rate, it would take 11 years to visit them all. But there was time to slip in one more.

We took the ferry from Rönnäng, on the mainland, and glided up to the little rocky island of Åstol. At the harbour mouth we passed the lively fish restaurant, Åstols Rökeri - another from Taste of West Sweden’s list - close enough for people to have shouted out their orders in the days before mobile phones.

Later, two things broke the deep peace of the long, light Scandinavia night. First the ferry, regular lifeline to the mainland.

Then a rare rumpus. But, watching from our balcony, how could we berate these noisy neighbours? To even hear a cuckoo is rare enough these days. To actually see two together, calling and flying around on the island opposite, was a wonder.

A few minutes later they were serving us local shellfish in mountainous proportions. (The only snag is that you do not even look at the wine list, so strict are the drink driving laws). The mood music was recorded blues. That evening it would be live jazz.

‘Quick, just 20 seconds to go. You must see this.’ Trailing in his wake, we were in time to see our host clank open a massive oven door to reveal ranks of freshly smoked prawns. It was appropriately dramatic, as Leif and his wife Pia were professional actors. Leif led us back to our table. The blues played on.

We assumed that was it for the afternoon, and we were part of their final act. But Leif and Pia slipped in another scene, the enthusiastic arrival of a group of office workers on an away-day. They had zinged across from Gothenburg in double quick time on fast rubber dingies.

We left them to the smoked prawns and took the little ferry back to the mainland. Then the easy dawdle through wide-open West Sweden back to that helpfully out of town airport.
