Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls

A visit from local MP Dr Rupa Huq

Dr Rupa Huq, MP for Ealing Central and Acton, paid a visit to the Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls early last month to meet the pupils and discuss the importance of questions from young people. The MP delivered a workshop on her role and how it has changed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Rupa explained to students how she represents their school community, and about how her previous questioning of PM David Cameron in 2015 over curriculum changes had been influenced by a letter from an Ellen Wilkinson pupil. The Ellen Wilkinson pupils had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about Rupa’s role and about current political issues, such as the impact of new policing laws and the Black Lives Matter movement. Students even made suggestions of questions Rupa could put forward in Prime Minister’s Questions, such as questioning why critical race theory had been cut from A-level syllabuses or asking what the Conservatives planned to do about Insulate Britain, who are causing disruption for some students on their commutes to school!
