The Soy Autor writing process was developed in collaboration with young people at-risk of, victims of or perpetrators of violence in El Salvador. In 2016, this innovative program launched at Cook County Jail with young men awaiting trial for violent offenses.Through the process of drafting, revising, illustrating and publishing memoirs, the Authors’ Circle develops reflection, critical thinking, literacy skills, conflict resolution and positive self-projection.

From grass and dirt.

I am from the inner city of Chicago; born, raised and present in its gloomy days.

I am from the soil, where Allah created man.

I am from basketball games and long hair.

From Larry and Virginia.

I am from aggression and standouts.

From the hard knocks and school of lessons to be known.

I am from Islam and Quran heritage.

From Chicago’s Ellington and Welton branch; beef and chicken. From the woman who taught the children pre-K, the brother who honestly thought I was going to the NBA. The memories deep within my oldest sibling’s closet, where our story holds our history.
