A Lost Son

The Soy Autor writing process was developed in collaboration with young people at-risk of, victims of or perpetrators of violence in El Salvador. In 2017, this innovative program launched at Cook County Jail with young men awaiting trial for violent offenses. Through the process of drafting, revising, illustrating and publishing memoirs, the Authors’ Circle develops reflection, critical thinking, camaraderie, conflict resolution and positive self-projection.

A Lost Son Kionte Newman

As I go back, I’m just knowing what’s about to happen. My mama tells “Let me get him his stuff first, then i got you. Be paaent.”

And just o the vibe I got as I entered the room, my blood boiled. But me being me, I played the situaaon cool. As i waited, days pass by, weeks went by and i never got it so I brought it up again and again. Another situaaon always supposedly came through so I never got what i needed. I was only twelve and already had to ďŹ gure it out on my own.

I am from struggle, from noodles and Kool-Aid. I am from the streets,

heartbreak, destruction, Death or Jail.

I am from another planet with shooting starts, floating cars, the distance from earth is very far.

I’m from tough love and tough times, From Ancre Sr. and Carrie.

I’m from the know-it-alls and work hard, From “Hard work pays off ” and “Pay attention.”

I’m from God forgive me for my sins,

Have mercy on my soul.

I’m from Chicago Heights with a big family, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese.

I’m from the streets where my friends lost life anywhere.

Others made lots of money.

As I lay my head my pillow at night, thoughts race through my mind

to help me and my family live right.
