The Soy Autor writing process was developed in collaboration with young people at-risk of, victims of or perpetrators of violence in El Salvador. In 2016, this innovative program launched at Cook County Jail with young men awaiting trial for violent offenses.Through the process of drafting, revising, illustrating and publishing memoirs, the Authors’ Circle develops reflection, critical thinking, literacy skills, conflict resolution and positive self-projection.

I rolled over on my left elbow, kissing my mom, as the right hand was on the door knob.

I am Tobaree Lee I am from the land where princes don’t realize they will become kings.

From Clorox and detergent soap.

I am from the down under survivors who believe in hard work; If you want it, work for it; reach for the stars, to obtain fallen dreams.

I am from the mind of The One who is great, and whose love is plenty; my father who, in earthly creation, thought this planet needed someone just like me.

I’m from cookouts and yearly family reunions.

I’m from a Baptist background, we believe in the blood.

I’m from Illinois and Robbins; spaghetti and meatballs and breakfast together.

From my brother who has always loved me as a son. My little brother Jameel who has risen beyond every obstacle and always made me proud. A picture of me dressed in a tuxedo, on one knee, holding my little sister, like I was here knight. From family as an oasis that you can always count on.
