The Challenge: 96 Miles for Macmillan Cancer Support with fish and chip stops to help

F

rom the 26th of May 2026, I will be taking on the legendary West Highland Way—a 96-mile (154km) trek from Milngavie to Fort William. I’m doing this to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s a cause that means the world to me because my sister Sally died from cancer in 1998 approaching 30 years ago. Macmillon were so supportive to Sally and the whole family as we went through this ordeal. Sally was just 31 when she died.

In December 2027 I will be 60 years of age, and I wanted to do something for Sally ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death, celebrating her life and also starting the countdown to this milestone birthday.

Joining me enroute will be one of my best friends since school Dan Massey.

Why this is a “Challenge” (and not just a walk) While the scenery of the Scottish Highlands is world-class, the terrain is unforgiving. To finish this, I will be pushing my body to the limit for 7 days straight.

Every Mile Counts I have been walking/training hard, but 96 miles is a long way to go. Your support is what will get me up that final hill into Fort William on June 1st.

Halfway through the challenge we will be stopping off at the legendary The Real Food Café, for some award-winning fish and chips, plus at the end I hope to be travelling further north to visit the NFFF National Fish & Chip Awards Best Newcomers Monster Fish & Chips in Fort Augustos. It would be great to get some support from my fish and chip colleagues and friends.

National Fish and Chip Day provides an opportunity to recognise that cultural significance, while also shining a light on the scale and importance of the industry behind it.

ational Fish & Chip Day, which this year will take place on 5 June 2026, was created to celebrate all things fish and chips and unite all those in the industry, recognising the importance and impact of the sector they are part of. Now entering its second decade, National Fish & Chip Day has become a key moment in the industry calendar. Its purpose is simple but important: to shine a national spotlight on fish and chips, encourage collective celebration and remind customers, communities and the wider food sector of the enduring place this dish holds in British Life.

For its 10th Anniversary in 2025, National Fish & Chip Day demonstrated the strength of that shared identity.

Thousands of shops across the UK took part, using the day to engage customers, celebrate their teams and champion fish and chips at a local and national level.

Over 440 million people saw, read or heard about National Fish & Chip Day in 2025.

This day organised by NEODA is owned by the trade, shaped by those within it and strengthened by the participation of all shops, suppliers and public that get involved. Whether marked quietly or embraced as a wider celebration, it is a chance to come together, celebrate success and put fish and chips firmly in the spotlight, where it belongs.

For more than 26 years, Quayside Whitby has been at the heart of one of the UK’s most famous fish and chip destinations. Owner Stuart Fusco took over the family business in 1999, running it as a traditional fish and chip shop and takeaway, staying true to the values that made the venue successful in the first place.

“Whitby is a destination place for fish and chips,” says Stuart.

“People come here because they want proper, traditional Whitby fish and chips and that’s exactly what we give them.”

Quayside’s commitment to quality has been recognised nationally, including winning Fish and Chip Shop of the Year in 2014 and being crowned Young Frier of the Year in 2004.

Despite its growth, the business remains firmly rooted in tradition, with around 95 percent of sales still coming from fish and chips. Being located on the coast shapes the menu too, with approximately 80 percent cod and 20 percent haddock reflecting local preference.

A key part of Quayside’s success is its long-standing relationship with Middleton Foods. The two businesses have worked together for as long as Stuart can remember.

Quayside serves a bespoke own-label batter and Middleton Foods’ spicy curry sauce. “Our batter is crispy, light and airy with a good crunch - proper old-school Yorkshire batter,” says Stuart. “That’s exactly what people want here, and Middleton Foods helped us get that spot on.”

Alongside the classics, Quayside caters for a wide range of dietary needs, offering vegan and vegetarian options as well as a full gluten-free menu available all day, every day.

“Because we’re in a tourist environment, gluten-free isn’t just an occasional thing, it’s part of the full dining experience,” explains Stuart. “We have a dedicated gluten-free pan so customers can relax and enjoy the same experience as everyone else.”

The partnership is built on trust and shared values. “I’ve known Ramsay and Ryan for years. You can always pick up the phone and have a chat with them, it’s never a problem,” Stuart adds. “They’re always keen to support you and they’re very much for the industry, which is a similar ethos to us at Quayside. We’re more than happy to continue working with them.”

ver 120 friers, farmers & suppliers recently travelled to Ely Cambridgeshire for the annual Isle of Ely Produce & Chippy Chat open day, some from as far away as Norway!

The event put on by John, Oliver and Claire Boutwood at their farm in Ely was hosted by Chippy Chat Publishing Editor Austen Dack. It highlights the journey the potato makes before it hits the shops. It is the culmination of their ‘field to frier’ platform, which this year also included the story of the potato seed too. The day although dedicated to the potato in recent years has taken on the mantle of being a showcase for what’s also best practice in the industry. Some of the best fish and chip shop owners from across the UK presented on the day from a 30foot impressive AV stage show set up in one of IOE’s potato storage sheds.

Special guest on the day was a brand-new liveried BABYLON articulated lorry! As part of our promotion of the variety the lorry will be seen on the roads by millions of people every year.

The chips were made from Babylon potatoes and gave the new variety one of its biggest tests yet with over 100 guests all queueing up to try them. lunch the group all went via tractor to see how the 25/26 crop was faring and then had a tour around the IOE farm. The verdict was that potatoes will not reach record prices, but shops that are looking for the best will have to pay a premium.

Hull’s How will you spend National Fish & Chip Day?

or National Fish and Chip Day for the last two years we spent the day in Hull, with a joint promotion with Smales! Last year we were set the challenge by Lee, Simon and Bobby at Smales to feed over 300 people with fish and chips in Hull to raise money for the Sailors’ Children’s Society, a national Hull-based charity supporting families of seafarers through bereavement, serious illness, and financial hardship.

Isle of Ely Produce sent some Babylon potatoes up to PG Chips who prepped them expertly in time for the big day itself.

Smales provided the fish, Bobby Joyce from Smales organised the roadshow and asked fish and chip stalwarts David and Nick Miller (Millers Haxby) to come across with their impressive mobile chip trailer to fry the mini portions for which the Hull public were asked to donate to the charity.

Alongside David and Nick & Dan, Richard Turner once again arrived from KFE to give him them hand on the day. We were also joined by NFFF President Andrew Crook who stayed for an hour before leaving to open his own shop for the busy evening trading period, and Jogvan Hansen from JFK, Gadus.

This event took place between 11.30 am and 1.30 pm near the Cenotaph in Hull city centre, where the public enjoyed freshly cooked fish and chips. All proceeds from the suggested £2 donation went directly to the Sailors’ Children’s Society. To make things even more exciting, anyone who donated £5 or more was also entered into a prize draw to win one of four amazing prizes including free fish and chips for a year, sponsored by Seafood from Norway.

Associate Members Meeting The NFFF has many associate members.

NFFF on the Road Scotland/Northern Ireland/Wales NFFF President Andrew Crook has visited Aberdeen Belfast & Machynlleth for three very informative local area meetings. They were well attended and had presentations from top shops and suppliers. They also centred on ideas and threats specific to their own areas.

Cornwall Fish & Chip Shops Launch Sustainable Seafood Campaign

T

wo of Cornwall’s much-loved fish and chip businesses recently gave cod a week off - and invited their valued customers to meet the rest of the family instead.

Harbour Lights in Falmouth and its sister fish and chip takeaways, Frasers in Penzance and Helston, had a light-hearted “Cod Free Week” campaign from 20th – 26th April, temporarily removing cod from the menu to promote sustainable alternatives including coley, haddock and pollock - cod’s closest cousins in the fish family tree.

The campaign aimed to raise awareness a b o u t s e a f o o d s u st a i n a b i l i t y w h i l e encouraging customers to give the wider cod clan a chance. The Great British Spud Takes Centre Stage in New Children’s Book for Charity

E

very great portion of chips starts with a potato - now that spud has inspired a children’s book that’s helping to change lives.

From field to frier, every fish and chip shop owner knows that great chips start with one simple ingredient – the potato.

Now that beloved spud has inspired an unexpected new children’s book that aims to make a real difference.

Nina Smith, a volunteer speaker with international charity Mercy Ships, has turned a personal bucket-list dream into reality with the publication of her first children’s adventure, Fiona Fry and the Hair-Raising Showdown. The story, aimed at children aged 6 to 11, is packed with humour, adventure and – fittingly for Chippy Chat readers – a slightly daft storyline involving potatoes.

Nina explains that writing a book had been on her bucket list for years. “I’m definitely not a professional author,” she laughs, “but three years ago I decided to take it seriously and enrolled on writing courses to learn the craft.”

“Once I started writing, I absolutely loved the process,” she says. “Fiona Fry and her potato-filled adventure quickly took on a life of its own.”

But the book has a much bigger purpose than simply entertaining young readers.

Nina has pledged that 100% of the first year’s profits will go to Mercy Ships – the world’s largest volunteer-run hospital ship charity. Mercy Ships provides free, lifechanging surgery for children and adults in some of the world’s poorest countries, where access to even basic healthcare can be extremely limited.

Nina hopes the book will raise £100,000 in its first year to support the charity’s work.

By celebrating potatoes in a fun and imaginative way, Nina also hopes the book will raise a smile among the UK’s fish and chip community. With chips at the heart of Britain’s favourite takeaway, it seems fitting that the great British spud is now the star of its own adventure story.
