Passions
for violin and piano 2001 10’
Program Notes for Passions Passions deals with the intermingling of influences in my life as an Asian American: the folk tunes that have surrounded me since my childhood and the western-based education of classical music and twentieth-century techniques. For Passions, I composed music idiomatic for the er-hu (Chinese fiddle) and the sheng (Chinese aerophone) and combined attributes for violin lines. As a contrast, the music for the piano alternates between various pentatonic tapestries and neoromantic, neo-tonal influences.
Performance Notes for Passions The grace notes should occur on the beat. The rhythms (i.e. triplets against quintuplets, sextuplets against septuplets) need not be executed with a machinelike precision. Instead, plenty of rubato is welcomed and the overall performance should feel flowing and romantic. Pedaling is up to the pianist’s discretion. The few indications are the composer’s preference.
