A REPORT ABOUT ALPICAT

Alpicat is located in the north-east of Catalonia. It is located in the region of Segrià. In the town we have a lot of countryside, houses, buildings and hills.

Before being called Alpicat it was called Vilanova d’Alpicat and in 1948 the name was changed to the actual one. The name “Alpicat” comes from the arabic Al-biqcat.

Alpicat, in 1885 the plgue of cholera and thypus caused twenty-six victims in 15 days. In 1558 the famous bandit Calvis plundered our village and killed a villager. During the French War, the Village took part as a body of tools for the defence of the country, butAlpicat was the place were the French’s were shot. The historical building and representative symbol of Alpicat is the church, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew.

For several centuries, it was more than just a street map of the centre. Epidemics, wars and crises did not allow it to have a demographic growth until the 18th century, wich caused its first major expansion, and from that moment the town began to grow, and with the creation of residential areas in the 90s,the urban boom that has bequeathed to the most agile point took place.

In 2022 the population was 6,333 habitants.

The coexistence is usually good, but there have been problems such as delinquency, fights, harassment, agressions...

The main economic activity is the cultivation of fruit, specially apples, pears and peaches. Cereals, corn and alfalfa are also important. There are also economic activities wich are not the main ones, but that are well known, such as industrial activities, specially focused on the commercialisation and preservation of food.
