Welcome to the September issue After a busy couple of months we have tried to have a low key month at home, catching up on all the boring jobs – tidying the garage, DIY and general maintenance. With such lovely weather we have been able to make the most of the area on our doorsteps with plenty of family picnics, days out with friends who normally have children at school and simply spending time together at home. The highlight has to be visiting Wicksteed Park…many happy days were spent there as a child and it’s lovely to do the same now with my own children. This is a bumper issue with lots of information on the local area – we celebrate what Holbeach has to offer residents and people in the local area, we are looking at all things Health related as well as how to beat a bulging waistline if you have over indulged over summer. Otis this month explores Whaplode , Annette talks about new baby etiquette and Tim test drives the Subaru Impreza. It may seem a while away but unfortunately as the nights draw in we all need to think about those winter nights and how to prepare the home for the challenges it brings. Check out our home and property section this month to ensure you have everything checked off the list! But before the dark nights and weather change all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and what remains of the summer weather!

Pupils at Wisbech Grammar School celebrate 99% A-Level pass rate Headmaster’s Statement I am incredibly pleased with the A-level results this year; these are the best results we’ve achieved for a number of years, particularly the top grades 57% of which were at A*-B. 31% of which were A* and A (significantly higher than the national average 26.4%) We have also improved our A* to C percentage up by 11%, to 87%, which is fantastic. The overall pass rate remains in excess of 99%. These results are a testament to our pupils’ hard work, and the dedication and resilience of our exceptional teaching staff plus the all essential support given by parents. Such grades will provide

an excellent foundation for their university careers where more than 75% of our pupils have gained entry to their first choice university, again another first. We are particularly proud of our medical and veterinary science candidates this year. All four medics have achieved their offers, and Tarn Chamberlain James has also been accepted to take up her Veterinary Science place at Cambridge in October. This year group, like others before, contains a whole host of great academic stories from pupils that continue to showcase the success the School is currently having and what a Wisbech Grammar School education can truly provide.

Residents Enjoy A Fun Filled Abba Day At St John’s Care Home St John’s Care Home in Spalding treated residents to a fun filled Abba day this week. Music and entertainment was provided by local singer Rosa Mae who sang all the favourites by the 1970s pop group from ‘Dancing Queen’ to ‘Mama Mia’. The care home staff entered into the spirit of the day, dressing up in their disco outfits and entertaining residents with dancing and singing along. “We’ve had a fantastic afternoon” said Ida Brickles, Activities Coordinator “Everyone seems to know the words to the songs and it’s been lovely to see our residents getting up and dancing or clapping along to the familiar tunes”.

Music has been shown to be very beneficial to people living with dementia, offering opportunities to enjoy different styles and genres of music people’s mood can be lifted instantly and they are less agitated. Residents were joined by family members including children and grandchildren who all joined in and agreed the afternoon was a great success.

A survey launched on Tuesday 31st July and will run until Friday 31st August. Leisure Centre customers will be able to take part either online or through paper copy questionnaires available at the centres. To complete the survey online please visit sholland. gov.uk We’d like to thank those who have already responded - your feedback will be used. There will be a wider consultation, open to all residents, during this Autumn.

ANOTHER year of 100% Pass Rate for Boston College A levels Boston College students are celebrating after achieving an amazing 100% A level pass rate for the third year running. A fantastic result for all students, with 42% achieving their A levels with a high grade (A*/A/B). Students completing their first year of A levels also achieved highly, with a pass rate 2% higher than the national average. These results demonstrate the hard work put in by the students and staff, the consistently high standards at Boston College and the high calibre of the A levels teaching team. Jo Maher, Principal and Chief Executive of Boston College added, “We are absolutely delighted with this brilliant set of results which evidence the quality of our teaching and learning at Boston College, our culture of excellence, and the outstanding support our learners receive.” Results Day was a huge success for Ariane Fleuriot, who is celebrating her two A’s and a B in her A levels in Psychology, Sociology and English Language. She said “I

am so happy with my results, I couldn’t have done this without the help and support from my tutors and friends. I am now ready to start my Sociology and Psychology joint degree at Bishop Grosseteste University, thanks to the knowledge and life skills I have developed at College.” Poppy Thomson has secured a place at Coventry University to study Law after receiving an A in Sociology, B in English Language and C in Law. Poppy said, “I’ve loved my time at College. Before I started my A levels, I was home-educated, so the idea of staring college was quite scary, but the lecturers have been amazing and so supportive. I’m so excited to start University.” Well done once again to all those Boston College A level students. Whether they continue their studies in Higher Education at Boston College, move away to a university, or enter employment, they are all wished the best of luck in their next steps towards an exciting career.

Hospital admissions for drug related mental and behavioural disorders are significantly lower in Lincolnshire (110 per 100,000) than seen regionally (129 per 100,000) or nationally (148 per 100,000). Admission rates are significantly higher for men than women and this is consistent for all geographies. Hospital admissions for drug related mental and behavioural disorders have decreased by 15.6% between 2013/14 and 2015/16, which demonstrates a smaller decrease than in the East Midlands (23%) and England (18.8%). • Dementia It is estimated that in 2017, 11,688 people aged 65 and over were living with dementia in Lincolnshire: this accounts for 6.7 % of the population aged 65 and over or 1.6% of Lincolnshire’s entire population In 2016 in Lincolnshire there were 1,951 deaths in males aged 80 years and over, 264 of these were due to dementia which accounts for 13.5% of all male deaths. The female deaths in the same age range were 2,506 and 555 were due to dementia which accounts for 22.1% of all female deaths. • Physical Activity 63.1% of adults in Lincolnshire in 2016/17 (19 years and older) reach the minimum activity levels that are recommended by the four UK Chief Medical Officers. Lincolnshire’s level is significantly lower than England (66.0%) but similar to the East Midlands rate (65.0%). There is

considerable variation across the county. The lowest active population is in South Holland with 57.5%. • Carers Lincolnshire has an estimated 84,000 unpaid family carers and one of the fastest growing rates of carers in the UK. Between 2001 and 2015, the county experienced a 27.5% increase in the number of carers, compared to the general rate of population growth of 6.2%. This was the largest rate of growth in the East Midlands. From 2011to 2015 the numbers of carers is estimated to have grown by 5.2%. Over 20,000 of these carers reported providing more than 50 hours of caring a week. Carers caring for over 50 hours a week are twice as likely to be in poor health as those not providing care. Over 53,000 carers were of working age, and over 20,000 were aged 65 and over. So there you have it. Maybe not pretty reading but provides robust information for targeted action by the health services, councils and individuals themselves. It would be interesting to see how many people now wear fit bits or use pedometers , as they seem on the face of it to be a great motivator to becoming more active and therefore help to lead a more healthy lifestyle. Let us know if you wear one..

Advice

What is NHS continuing healthcare In England, government guidance states that NHS continuing healthcare means ‘care provided over an extended period of time to a person aged 18 or over to meet physical or mental health needs which have arisen as the result of disability, accident or illness’ NHS continuing healthcare can be ongoing care in a hospital, a care home, a hospice your own home, depending on your needs. The location of the care provided should not in itself determine whether you are entitled to it. A person is entitled to NHS continuing healthcare if the primary need is for health care. Your primary need may be for health care because of:•the nature or type of needs or •the amount of need you have; or •some combination of the type of needs and the amount of need. In order to work out whether or not you are entitled to NHS continuing healthcare, the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) or NHS trust first assesses your continuing healthcare needs and then decides whether or not you are entitled to continuing healthcare. When it does so, it follows government guidance about assessments for and entitlement to NHS continuing healthcare, and must also follow certain legal principles about who is entitled to NHS continuing healthcare. You may be able to challenge a decision about entitlement to NHS continuing healthcare that does not comply with these principles. There have been no direct challenges to the legality of the government’s guidance, so if you want to challenge the guidance itself rather than the way it has been applied, you will need specialist advice in order to do so. If you are terminally ill, and have a rapidly deteriorating condition which may be entering

its terminal phase, you can get NHS continuing healthcare without first having a full NHS continuing healthcare assessment. The Court of Appeal decided that you are entitled to NHS continuing healthcare if your overall need is for a type of nursing or health services that a local authority cannot provide For example, your overall need may be for a specialist type of care beyond general nursing care. The following example describes a real case in which a person was wrongly denied NHS continuing healthcare that they should have received because of the kind of needs they had. Example A man was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, behavioural problems and could not look after himself. His wife cared for him at home, but when she wanted to take a break from caring the NHS would not pay for care for her husband because she was not a qualified nurse, so the NHS believed she could not be offering nursing care. The ombudsman decided that the care she was giving was in effect nursing care, and the fact that the man was receiving this care from his wife did not mean he was not entitled to NHS continuing healthcare.

The NHS had failed to take into account the severity of his psychological problems and the special skills required to care for someone with dementia. NHS continuing healthcare in the man’s area was biased towards physical care and care in hospital. The fact that the man needed care at home was not relevant to the question of whether or not he was entitled There is no exhaustive list of the needs you must have to qualify for NHS continuing healthcare. Entitlement depends on individuals own needs. You may need specialist help to establish whether or not you are entitled to NHS continuing healthcare. NHS continuing healthcare has no effect on State Pension although it can affect other benefits. If you are receiving Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance or PIP in a care home, payments will normally stop 28 days after continuing healthcare begins.

Mini Police Mini Police is a new primary-school engagement coming to Lincolnshire in September 2018.

T

he Mini Police project we introduced to Simply magazine last month continues to gather momentum every day. Over the last 4 weeks of the school term, PC Tim Newell visited schools across the South Holland sector along with the Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) assigned to each school to introduce the project to both pupils and class teachers. They explained the importance of the project, how Mini Police would be representing not only their school but also Lincolnshire Police, and gave a brief insight into some of the tasks and projects that Mini Police will be undertaking, and also a sneak preview of the uniforms that Mini Police will wear for official duties. Needless to say, the response from the children in every school was phenomenal, with more hands in the air than they could count when they asked who would like to join! The children were told that there will be an election in September, with children from Years 5 and 6 being elected by their peers, and asked to think about what would make them a suitable candidate for the role. They will be asked to prepare and present an election speech in September, so will have plenty of time to think about what qualities they can bring to the project.

To give them some ideas, Mini Police from one of our pilot schools were asked to list the most important responsibilities and what they intend to do to make a difference as a Mini Police volunteers: ‘I intend to do a good job in the role of a Mini Police officer to make a difference to the school and also the world’ – Jennifer ‘I think the most important responsibility is helping others and trying to make the environment better’ – Emily ‘I think the most important part of being in Mini Police is looking after others’ – Dominic ‘I want to help people and work as part of a team to help our community to be a better place’ – Lennon ‘You have to be very mature and responsible because you are representing the school’ – Katy ‘The most important thing about Mini Police is that you need to always be sensible and you need to be good in class’ –Ryan ‘As a Mini Police I am proud of what I have achieved’ – Ruby

The full list of South Holland schools starting Mini Police in September is as follows: • Sutton Bridge Westmere Community Primary School • Long Sutton Primary school • Sutton St James Community Primary School • Tydd St Mary Church of England Primary School • Fleet Wood Lane School • Holbeach Primary Academy • The Holbeach William Stukeley C Of E Voluntary Aided Primary School • Moulton Chapel Primary School • Weston Hills CE Primary School • Cowbit St Mary Primary School • Pinchbeck East Church of England Primary School • The Donington Cowley Endowed Primary School • Gosberton Academy • St Bartholomews C of E Primary School • The Spalding Parish Church of England Day School • The Spalding Monkshouse Primary School • Spalding Primary School • St Pauls Community Primary and Nursery School • Surfleet Primary School • Clough and Risegate Community Primary School • Quadring Cowley & Brown’s Primary School

Family life

Midwives The Village

F

or most families, the birth of a new baby is a very exciting time! There will have probably been lengthy talks about everything that a new baby means – a new chapter, things to buy, hints and tips plus lots more. Friends and family seem more interested in us and our health, more keen to meet up and more likely to call or drop in for coffee. This is usually a welcome increase in our social network but sometimes, especially once the baby is born, visitors to the house become more of a hinderance than a help. We feel obliged to have visitors round because we don’t want to upset anyone, especially family. There are however, some pretty good basic rules that all visitors can adhere to and help support a new family in ways they might not have thought about. 1. Only visit if you’ve been invited. Don’t assume and don’t turn up unannounced. 2. Don’t visit if you’re unwell – even if it’s just a cough or cold 3. Keep visits short and don’t overstay your welcome. 30 minutes is a good start. 4. Ask before picking up the baby and wash your hands 5. Know when to give the baby back 6. Resist the temptation to give advice if it hasn’t expressly been asked for 7. Don’t comment on the physical appearance of the mother 8. Don’t expect too much 9. Bring food. Casseroles, soups, pasta bakes – nutritious, filling,

easy to warm up food. 10. Take washing away – ask the family to put a basket of washing out for you to take away. Bring it back a day or two later and leave it on the doorstep. If the family are having a Babymoon and don’t want visitors yet, respect their decision and try not to take it personally. It’s not that they don’t want you to see their baby, but they might want the chance to bond as a family or work out the problems they are having with breastfeeding or sore stitches. If visitors are not yet being received, or you are too geographically distant, consider sending a supermarket delivery to them (message to confirm a suitable time!). It will save them a trip out and they will appreciate it more than flowers and another teddy bear. Other ways in which you can really support a new family are to do other repetitive practical things in the home – mow the grass, fill the car up with petrol, clean the bathroom, take older siblings out for the day etc. Family and friends always rally round to help a family in their first few weeks, but don’t forget to keep that up after the ‘newness’ and novelty of the baby has worn off. Most parents need the most help after the first 3 months – the time at which fairweather friends have been and gone.

Love Annette xx

Put your best paw forward! It’s time to take a tour of one of our beautiful surrounding villages with a well-loved Labrador.

I

t’s time to hear from our pootling Pedigree, Otis, as he winds his way around another village. Where are we off to for this month’s wander I wonder? Whaplode! And what a waggy tail of a walk it is too. I lead the way while my human catches up, and we are both struck by the number of residential roads there are to explore. Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the busy A151 is the village’s beautiful 12th Century church. Simply walking around its grounds is a treat in itself. And as for the village hall. Well! It’s home to bingo sessions, film showings and fitness fun. My human asks me if I would like to go with her to her Totally Shredded class here? But I think the Move It Or Lose It session is much more my scene. They even use balls! It’s just the job for a canine chap like me who likes his exercise to be gentle. There’s a nice big grassy play park for the two-legged puppies, with plenty of room for picnics. You know, I like it so much in this village I wonder if the locals would consider installing a sculpture of me -

presenting the Wappledog! Back to the car, and what do we see as we drive along the main road? There’s quite a lot when you look, like a restaurant, take-away, building sites, bike shop and a petrol station. I suggest we pull in. ‘Why’s that?’ my human asks me. ‘Do you want to see if they sell dog treats?’ ‘Of course!’ I think, but it’s the car wash that has caught my attention. Let’s just say my paws aren’t muddy anymore – but the boot is now…

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

Back to

school The Essential Guide

The shops are full of ‘essentials’ for the new school year, and your children will have their own ideas of what they can’t do without. We look at how you can please the kids as well as the teachers without breaking the bank. School uniform School uniform is something that parents assume they will buy on special offer. Like Easter eggs, if there isn’t a three-fortwo promotion on school shirts, or something similar, shoppers will go elsewhere. Look out for Teflon-coated fabrics if you have a big family and want to pass school uniforms on from one child to the next. Teflon makes fabric more playground-resistant and clothes will not stain as readily. Primary schools do not strictly enforce uniform policy and often the right coloured sweatshirt will do just as well as a more expensive, branded one. It is the governing body of a primary school that is responsible for uniform policy but, ultimately, dress code is a voluntary agreement between the parents and the school. Hills Department Store in Spalding are official stockists of many school uniforms for the local schools. Pens, pencils and pencil cases Classroom equipment needs to be functional, rather than fun. Teachers can be strict about what they allow in the classroom. Items like metal pencil cases are sometimes banned because they are too noisy and, when they fall

onto the floor, the contents go flying. If you want to be teacher’s pet, choose a fabric pencil case, either natural or plastic, with a zip that is large enough to hold a pencil, pen, colouring crayons, ruler, rubber and pencil sharpener. Teachers often dictate what children write with usually a pencil to begin with and then a blue or black roller ball or ball point pen for older children. Make sure the rubber is big enough to work well: erasers shaped like a big pebble are ideal. For children who enjoy art a good set of first crayons will last them, something fairly chunky makes it easy to hold and hopefully will ensure they don’t snap! Stationery The choice of stationery is huge, but what do children actually need? Primary Schools all have literacy and numeracy hours, which allow children to learn at their own pace. This means kids have to do less structured, textbook work and more is produced on loose bits of paper. Why not get an A4 document box folder which is ideal for storing lots of work. Keeping a diary has gone out of fashion but an alternative is to give children a notebook. Research has shown that children are encouraged to write if they have a notebook that is theirs and in which they can write whatever they want - swear words, jokes, lists of names of people they like, love or hate. Backpacks School bags are getting bigger. The latest designs even include foldaway wheels for trundling heavy loads. Several retailers have launched new school bags with foldaway inline skating wheels and telescopic handles. While fun - this kind of mobile bag could spell trouble along a school corridor and will set you back about £40. Alternatives for heavy loads

are classic backpacks, made from waterproof, rip-proof material with padded shoulder straps. For younger children, you may want to consider a fun school bag – maybe a cute animal theme, the latest action hero or their favourite cartoon character. With some thought and careful planning Back to School does not have to leave you with coppers in your purse and you can ensure your children go to school on their first day back with everything they need. Overcoming Back to School Nerves Moving up to secondary school is an exciting time for many pre-teens but can also be a daunting day too. No matter what year they’re in, after 6 weeks off many children may get nervous about starting the new school year. And for kids with learning and attention issues, it can be especially scary. As children get older they aren’t always eager to share all their worries with their parents. Just because they haven’t said anything doesn’t mean they don’t have any worries as they approach the start of the school year. Secondary school can be a very stressful time, especially for struggling students. Demanding academic expectations, more responsibilities to juggle, a confusing social scene, and college and career on the horizon—there’s a lot to deal with. If your pre-teen isn’t open about their feelings, be on the lookout for signs of anxiety, and try these tips to calm first-day jitter. Be Prepared Sometimes schools make mistakes as they schedule classes for students. An unexpected mix-up can heighten first-week anxiety. Suggest your child look over their schedule ahead of time, or do it together, so there are no surprises. That also allows them to have his schedule corrected as early as possible.

Non-school commitments. Sometimes we can all bite off more than we can chew and this can easily happen in the first few weeks trying to fit in at a new school in terms of activities and part-time jobs. If you find there’s just too much, talk to your child and discuss options of which one could be dropped for the moment. Support Your child might feel like they’re suddenly on their own when it comes to staying on top of schoolwork. But while there are expectations to take on more responsibility, there are a number of people to turn to for help. Encourage them to selfadvocate with teachers, and to speak up before things get way off track or they feel totally lost or overwhelmed. Remind them that you are always there too.

Social pressures Your pre-teen may not tell you outright that they’re nervous about social situations. But if you know what past experiences have been like, you can try to open the door to discussion. You might say something like, “The school is so much bigger than primary school. Are you afraid you won’t know people in your classes?” Or, “You haven’t seen Emily since you broke up this summer. Are you worried about running into her at school?”

Rid Yourself of your

Holiday Weight Gain So you’ve been away and gained a few pounds...don’t worry you can get back on track

T

here isn’t a magic number of “ days” you can spend eating all the Mexican food and margaritas you want before you start to gain weight, but the good news is there are certain tactics for your post holiday diet that can help your body “recover” after a few days off the wagon. First, to determine how much weight you’ll gain after a few days of unhealthy eating, use the same calculations you’d use if you want to drop weight. An extra 1,000 calories per day would cause you to gain about two pounds per week, while

an extra 500 calories per day which would cause a one-pound weight gain in a week. Secondly, consider how you were eating previously. If you have been chronically under-eating and over-restricting calories, you will most likely gain more than one or two pounds in a week. We underestimate the terrible effects on our metabolism that chronic under-eating has, and unproportional weight gain with increased calories is one of them. However, there is also an interesting upside to eating more

food. Research shows that when you overeat for several days, your body responds by increasing the amount of calories burned. That’s right, overfeeding (the scientific name for overeating) leads to a temporary increase in your metabolic rate that can range from 4 to 12 percent. But you should note this increase in calories burned does not completely counteract the increase in calories consumed, so you’ll still gain weight. Fortunately, if you’ve overindulged on delicious food on holiday (and why not, you’re on holiday!), you can easily recover.

Simply go back to your normal clean-eating habits and active lifestyle, and any weight that you gained will come off. Even a small increase in activity will help you rid you of those few pounds in a couple of weeks. What you shouldn’t do is start aggressively dieting and restricting your calories. This can promote a “binge and restrict pattern,” which may or may not have negative impacts on your metabolism in the short term, but over the long term it lays the groundwork for an unhealthy relationship with food.

Essential Oils Roman Chamomile

Grapefruit

Coriander

Settle back and calm down. Roman Chamomile will soothe your body, skin and mind either by diffusing, putting a couple of drops on the bottom of your feet at bedtime, or adding some to a hot drink. The plant, with flowers that resemble a daisy, has been nicknamed the ‘plant’s physician’ because it has positive effects on other plants growing nearby. If you need a little fix of peace, Roman Chamomile can help you find your quiet place again.

Grapefruit essential oil is derived directly from the skin of the fruit and you’ll enjoy its uplifting and invigorating scent either in massage, body scrubs, diffusing or in water, giving your drink a flavour-filled and vitalising boost. Diffusing grapefruit oil invokes a sense of clarity and can help uplift your mood. When applied directly to skin it will help promote a healthy, clear complexion. (Remember to avoid sun exposure for up to 12 hours after applying any citrus oil topically).

Coriander is perhaps best known as a spice in food but it has many other properties as an essential oil. Did you know that if you apply Coriander oil directly to your skin (mixed with your favourite moisturiser) you’ll start to see the cleansing properties contribute to a clear complexion and better looking skin? In fact, this oil works very similarly to Lavender as they share several of the same chemical constituents so if you are out of Lavender then reach for this for it’s amazing, soothing benefits.

Local Optometrists Children’s Campaign enters 6th Year School Visits from Local Optometrists highly valued by local teachers Molsom & Associates Ltd will start their Children’s campaign again during National Eye Health week in September (24th-30th). The team are delivering interactive lessons about our eyes to reception children, where Sidney the Teddy Bear has his eyes tested. There will also be small group interactive play sessions to help the children learn about eyesight. Sidney gets to wear some really funky glasses, play some fantastic games, and marvel at optical illusions. According

to Andy Molsom “The children love it, and are always really engaged, they even ask some intriguing questions”. Regular eye exams (usually annually) for children are so important especially during the early days of education to ensure they can learn at their full potential. “It sounds odd, but often a child won’t know if they can’t see well; as parents we must not assume if they don’t complain that all’s well with their eye sight” said Andy.

Fortunately more and more of our parents are seeing the value of regular eye exams for their children however there are still parents who believe their children’s eye sight is checked at school and this is rarely the case.

Key Points regarding children’s eyecare • Children’s eye exams are FREE to parents, they are paid for by the NHS • Children are never too young to have their eyes checked. • Taking children to have an eye exam is just as important as a trip to the dentist, or having their feet measured. • Ideally a child’s first eye test should be around

the age of four, as problems detected at this age can be corrected more easily. • Early detection means common childhood sight conditions can be more easily treated. • Good vision during a childs early years can help them fulfil their potential. • It is estimated one in five school aged children (about 1 million children) has an undetected vision problem that could restrict their ability to learn, read, write and spell.

• Children with a family history of eye problems are more at risk of developing squint and lazy eye. Signs to look out for • Difficulty concentrating, thus avoiding close work tasks • Behavioural problems • Headaches • Rub eyes frequently • Difficulty with hand-eye coordination

British

Food & Drink

Food Fortnight

Held in the autumn at the same time as harvest festival, British Food Fortnight is the biggest annual, national celebration of British food and drink. Hundreds of activities take place across the UK during British Food Fortnight. The event is the biggest showcase of food on the national calendar with celebrations including promotions, tastings and special menus in pubs, restaurants and shops, special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children’s centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country fairs. Buying British: Why do it? Choosing British means supporting British farmers whose work helps to keep the British countryside the way we want it to look: no sheep, or cows, or fruit, or vegetables - no countryside! Watch our videos below on why you should Buy British. • You will be supporting the economy – everyone from the farmer, to those who work in food processing and the retailers selling the food. • British food travels less far from farm to shop so has a lower carbon footprint than most imported foods. • Eating British fruits and vegetables in season is good for you. Foods in season contain the nutrients, minerals and trace elements that our bodies need at particular times of the year. • British meat is produced to some of the highest welfare standards in the world: no

growth-promoting hormones are allowed and any antibiotics are administered only under veterinary direction. • Britain’s pig farmers operate by UK law to standards of welfare that are higher than those of nearly every other EU member state. Buying pork that is a ‘Product of the means there is a 70% chance that it comes from a farming system that would be illegal in Britain. • Britain’s beef and sheep industries are the envy of the world; breeding livestock and genetics from our native breeds are much sought after by farmers in other countries. Protect our great native livestock industry by buying the real thing, not an imported substitute. • Britain’s cattle passport system means that each animal can be uniquely traced to its dam (mother) and place of birth. • British chicken is the safest chicken meat in Europe: 2% of British chickens have salmonella whereas 30% of European chickens have the disease. For more information and to find out about events locally visit www.lovebritishfood.co.uk 1 in 5 don’t know that strawberries are grown in the UK… & other shocking facts! A survey of 2,000 British adults has suggested that most people (75%) have not got a clue what fruit and veg is grown in the UK and when it is in season.

The survey commissioned by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) concludes that many consumers didn’t know that British farmers even grew foods such as aubergines (19%), blueberries (63%), sweetcorn (62%), iceberg lettuce (37%), cauliflower (29%), carrots (21%). These findings sound totally crazy to me! What is even more shocking is that 1 in 5 people did not realise that we grow apples in the UK. The survey goes on to highlights that less than 6 in 10 people knew that strawberries were a summer fruit and 1 in 5 did not even know that British farmers grew them at all. Winter produce fared no better, with nearly half of consumers (46%) unaware that in December you could buy British brussels sprouts, a vital part of a traditional Christmas dinner. The research also showed that those born in the 1990s have significantly less knowledge than previous generations. Meanwhile, many adults born in the 1990s also thought that the UK commercially grew oranges (16%), bananas (8%), kiwi fruits and mangoes (both 5%). When there are increased calls within the farming industry for consumers to buy more local food, it shows there are still alarming gaps in knowledge about food provenance. I would never have guessed some of the results of this survey but it is clear that this issue is one limited to the last two generations.

HolbeachFacts

We all know Holbeach as a market town with a wide range of independent shops on the high street but did you know it has a rich history and many famous faces started life in the town! Until the beginning of the 17th century, the sea came to within 2 miles (3.2 km) of the town and there were severe floods recorded in the 13th and 16th centuries. The land drainage programmes that followed moved the coastline of the Wash to 9 miles (14 km) away, leaving Holbeach surrounded by more than 23,000 acres (93 km2) of reclaimed fertile agricultural land The Spalding and Norwich Railway, (later incorporated in the Midland and Great Northern

Joint Railway), opened Holbeach railway station in 1862. Like the rest of the M&GN route, it closed to passengers in 1959 The name “Holbeach” also applies to the civil parish of Holbeach. The parish is one of the largest by area in England, and extends from Cambridgeshire to the Wash, measuring 16 miles (26 km) north to south, and about 4 miles (6.4 km) east to west. The Prime Meridian of the world passes through the west of Holbeach and is marked with a millstone at Wignals Gate

Winter Maintenance

As Autumn arrives it’s a good idea to finish all of the outside jobs before the cold weather sets in. This Autumn Maintenance Check Guide helps to ensure that you carry out all those end-of-the-year jobs that will protect and preserve your home and garden as we enter the colder wetter Autumn season.

Frost Damage All external decorating should be finished and remedial work using sand and cement mortar should be done before the Autumn temperature falls, because frost can affect this sort of work badly. Frost damage will affect the structural integrity of cement and mortar, and you don’t want to be doing the job twice! On a building site for example, sand and cement work is not allowed to commence unless the temperature is at least 3° and rising. Heating Checks Now is the time to check your heating is working. Don’t wait until you need it, give it a trial-run in Autumn to make sure that it is working properly. This means that if you need repairs to your boiler or heating system you can book it in before you really miss your central heating. It’s also handy to do this now as most plumbers’ prices rise during the winter. Book a Central Heating Service Preparing for the cold weather should be done now and your boiler, or other heating should be serviced (by a competent, registered person) in Summer or Autumn. Do not wait for cold weather to find out that something is not working properly. Heating engineers get really busy at the beginning of the cold winter weather, as customers turn on their heating and find a pump has seized or a pilot light won’t light. Beat the rush by booking your annual boiler service now if you haven’t yet had your boiler serviced, it isn’t too late. Expansion Tank Maintenance If you have a feed and expansion tank in the loft you can carry out a simple test to make sure it’s working well, by moving the float arm up and down a couple of times while watching to check the valve lets in water and then shuts the water off. This means you can effect your own repairs or it will at least can save you time and money by finding the fault with your heating system before you call a heating engineer. Loft Insulation Autumn is a good time to top up your home insulation. Do you know how much loft insulation you should have? While you are in the loft, make sure you have a depth of at least 270mm of loft insulation. This often means raising the level of

42 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

your loft floor if you use your loft for storage. Make sure it is laid away from the roof eaves to let in air for loft ventilation, and prevent damp via condensation.

As a final check, make sure there is no soil or other debris build up against any house walls which could cause a breach of your damp proof course.

Pipework in Your Loft Check pipework in the loft is insulated. Pipes can be insulated using purpose-made pipe insulating foam tubes which are really easy to fit. They are usually a grey coloured dense foam tube. They simply slot over the pipes and help to prevent them freezing. There are also special elbow joint insulating materials, which allow you to insulate bends and corners in your pipes, or you can tape insulating foam or tape around the bends.

Check Air Vents and Air Bricks Check that air bricks are clear of dirt and debris to ensure you get a proper flow of air under your suspended floor which helps prevent condensation and wet and dry rot. Make sure that trickle vents in windows are clear of debris. Trickle vents allow you to have a flow of air in the room when windows are shut tight without experiencing a draft.

Stopcocks and Isolating Valves Check your loft for a stopcock and make sure all stopcocks (this applies to the whole house) are working. Give isolating valves a quick turn and test to make sure they do turn off the supply. Including these checks in your Autumn maintenance regime means that if you do get a water leak or a frozen pipe you can be confident that you can turn off the water supply. Stop the Drafts in Your Home Check all door and window draughtproofing, including the letter box. Adding a threshold strip to external doors is quick and easy way to stop draughts and save money on heating. Check Ventilation to Stop Condensation Autumn is a time that we tend to shut up our houses and the resulting lack of ventilation can cause condensation. In older houses with solid walls, the appearance of damp in the colder months is common. This is usually caused by condensation.. Condensation can be reduced greatly by making sure rooms are well-ventilated and extractor fans are installed. Check Exterior Walls Pick a bright Autumn day to have a look at pointing and brickwork to make sure there are no cracks or flaking that need to be repaired. Water can find its way into the smallest defect so be sure to look carefully. You can use a pair of binoculars to save you climbing a ladder or erecting scaffolding for a visual check.

Clear Drains, Gutters and Gullies In late Autumn, when the leaves have fallen, remove leaves and other blockages from drains and gullies, and clean and repair leaking gutters and down pipes. This prevents rainwater running down your walls and soaking into brick, stone, timber and render. While these surfaces will resist damp if they are in good condition if they become soaked over long periods of time they may allow water into the house, especially if the surface is damaged by freeze thaw action. Roof Maintenance Use binoculars or a camera with a good zoom lens to check the condition of your roof. If you have cracked or slipped tiles, damaged flashing, or valleys and gullies that are full of debris, you will need to hire scaffolding to carry out maintenance. Otherwise you should get quotes from reputable roofing companies to carry out repairs before the damage becomes more serious. Check Outside Taps If you have an external tap, make sure both the pipes and tap itself is insulated to prevent freezing. Fit a Water Butt There is unlikely to be a shortage of water over the winter period, but you can take advantage of seasonal special offers by buying a water butt and fitting it now. It will have plenty of time to fill up over the winter! Clean Paths, Patios and Decks Get the pressure washer out or scrub some anti-fungal cleaner onto paved and decked areas to help to prevent them from being slippery when they are wet.

Bold New Step

for Local Flooring Specialists

L

ouise and Simon are proud to announce the opening of their family run flooring business, L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd. The family have always lived locally and after having many years of experience and celebrating Simons’ 25th year of fitting this year decided to open up their own showroom. The doors opened to the public late July to showcase a wide range of flooring products. The showroom holds various different flooring types such as: carpets, vinyl, laminate, Karndean, Moduleo, Quickstep and more. The showroom has specifically designed demonstration flooring for most flooring types as a visual example for customers to see when finding the perfect flooring for them. With the many years of experience the family decided to design the showroom to provide a service for every customers’ individual needs. What makes L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd unique is the fact that they are one of the largest stockists in the area. As well as having many different flooring stands, they also have a variety of carpets and vinyl on roll stock which means customers and take their carpet or vinyl home that day. The showroom holds over 50 carpets and vinyls on roll stock all offering a range of different styles, textures and prices. In addition to roll stock the showroom also offers carpet and vinyl remnants and off cuts of various shapes and sizes. This is the piece of flooring left from the roll stock after the greater part has been brought. There is also a small roll section of entrance matting with remnants and off cuts included. Carpets and vinyl aside, L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd has much more to offer. Quickstep

flooring is a diverse range of many collections of laminate, engineered wood and LVT. Quickstep flooring is simple to maintain and has stunning results. As well as L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd being a registered quickstep retailer, they also are Karndean specialists. Karndean is a vinyl flooring with many unique ranges. They have various sizes of design strips which are added between planks and tiles for a natural looking effect. Karndean Design Flooring has a large selection of products in the showroom and one main attraction is the Karndean table. This is a large table that has all different styles of Karndean flooring inside for customers to try their own looks and ideas by customising the flooring to what they are looking for. The demonstration flooring is a example as to what customers can create for what is suitable for them. Another style of flooring L&S offer is Moduleo; a luxury vinyl flooring combining the products natural beauty with the products durability. Fun fact: L&S

are the only retailer of Moduleo within 15 miles radius. If you are looking for carpet binding, L&S are able to offer their service to bind together the edge of a carpet to wool to prevent fraying. The finished product could be used for many reasons such as rug to protect flooring from scratches and scuffs to a runner down the stairs. The service is completely custom, customers can choose any colour wool, shape and size of the carpet to bind giving it a personal touch. The showroom also holds a small section for a chance for customers to look and feel different artificial grass. This is a supply only service at a great price. L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd have a small friendly team of Simon and son, Craig fitting, Louise and daughter Nicole with daughter-in-law Xiana in the office. The team are all looking forward to welcoming you to the showroom and the future of their business.

Choosing Living Room Flooring Are you trying to decide which type of flooring is right for your living room? The living and lounge areas are often the most walked-through and public areas of the house. With so many different types of floors out there, it can be hard work knowing which one is most suitable. The good news is you can add essentially any type of floor to the living room. There is nothing that won’t go. Carpet, vinyl, wood and tiles are all suitable choices. So really it comes down to the look and feel you’re hoping to achieve, whether or not you have additions such as underfloor heating, as well as lifestyle considerations like having children or pets around. Useful questions to ask yourself In order to determine which living room flooring is right for you, there are a few questions you should ask yourself. These include: • What type of atmosphere am I looking to create? • How much maintenance am I willing to put in? • How many people will be passing through the living room?

Atmosphere and style: The atmosphere you’re hoping to achieve will make a massive difference to the type of floor you should install. If you’re looking for warmth and a cosy feel to the room, carpet would be your best option. If you’re looking to add a rustic, highend look then hardwood flooring would be better suited. Or, if you’re looking for a modern floor, laminate might be the best choice. So think carefully about what look you’d prefer and the feeling you’re wanting to create in the room. Maintenance: Of course, it’s all well and good choosing a floor based solely upon how it looks, but maintenance is another thing you need to consider. All flooring types require some maintenance, but solid wood for example, is typically higher maintenance than other flooring types. Are you prepared to put in daily maintenance? If not, you’d likely be better off with vinyl which is one of the easiest types of floors to maintain. Durability: Another important factor to consider with sitting room flooring is its durability. It tends to be one of the most used rooms in the home, especially for larger families or households with pets. With this in mind, you need to make sure whichever floor you do choose, it is durable and strong enough to withstand high daily foot traffic and activity. Understanding the pros and cons of different flooring types Each lounge flooring type comes with its own pros and cons. Understanding the benefits of each

flooring type will help you to make a wiser decision. Below you’ll discover some of the main pros and cons of each flooring for living areas. Carpet – Carpets come in a wide range of depths and designs. They add warmth to the room, feel soft underfoot, and can help to make a room feel more relaxing. They require minimal maintenance, with a daily vacuum often being enough to keep it looking clean and tidy. However, as there are so many different types out there, you will need to ensure you’re choosing a high quality carpet for the living room. The cheaper, thinner carpets will easily become damaged due to high foot traffic. Vinyl – Vinyl is more commonly installed within the kitchen or bathroom due to its easy maintenance design. It’s also one of the cheapest types of flooring available. These days you can find vinyl which mimics the appearance of real wood and tiles so style-wise you’ll easily find one to match the look you’re going for. Solid wood – Solid wood is one of the more expensive types of living room flooring, but it’s also one of the most attractive and durable options. It does require a little more maintenance, but many solid wood

floors come with a guarantee from 15-30 years. As a living floor, solid wood will change over time, and can be prone to warping – so we don’t recommend it in areas exposed to high levels of direct sunlight, and it can’t be used with underfloor heating. Engineered wood – Engineered wood is a perfect alternative to solid wood if you’re looking for a traditional wooden appearance. It is still a real-wood floor, but is made of multiple layers, so is a lot more versatile and resistant to the elements than solid wood. Engineered wood can be used with underfloor heating. Laminate – Laminate is cheaper than solid wood, but still provides the same kind of style to the room. It’s easier to install and maintain and is available in hundreds of different designs. It’s colder than carpet, but is a popular lounge flooring choice in UK homes. Overall the possibilities are endless when you’re looking for living room flooring. The above tips will help you to establish which one is right for your home. Whichever type you choose, you’ll find there are hundreds of different designs to choose from!

Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic PROS ‘N’ CONS

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

T

he fifth incarnation of the Subaru Impreza brings four-wheel-drive grip within reach of buyers who don’t fancy an SUV. It is an Astra-sized hatchback with a symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system coupled to 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol Boxer units. I drove the higher powered 2.0-litre. What’s intriguing about the new Impreza is that it is the first motor to be launched in Britain on Subaru’s fresh Global Platform – the pillar of all its future models. There is nothing stirring about the latest Impreza’s silhouette, but the interior is better than the former model’s. The quality of plastics and finishes have been enhanced, while the cabin is wider and offers more rear legroom. Maximum cargo capacity has also been boosted by 10 litres. The cabin houses lots of kit, too, with safety being the new Impreza’s selling point. The car is fitted with EyeSight technology – a camera-based system that scans the way ahead for other road-users. It is more accurate than conventional camera and sensor arrangements, continually producing 3D images and identifying specific objects – rather than just reacting to unknown obstacles. Behind the wheel, the 2.0-litre powerplant isn’t mind-blowingly quick. The car pulls away briskly, but anything after this feels a tad lifeless, so you must plan your overtakes in advance. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) imitates an orthodox auto’s ratios. It works okay, but it does whine offensively. There’s no manual gearbox,

as the intricate EyeSight gadgetry only functions with the CVT. So, when all’s said and done, you need to work the engine like a dog to make real headway. Relax to a cruise, however, and the refinement is respectable, even if the levels of tyre rumble are a touch too much. Handling-wise, the Impreza corners with hardly any body lean. The steering is wellweighted, and the grip is incredible, due to the all-wheel-drive system. Alas, you will fork out for the Impreza’s traction talents when you fill the car with petrol. The 2.0-litre variant only returns 42.8mpg, meaning the Subaru is eclipsed on the efficiency front by many SUVs. But Subaru is happy with how safe its cars are. It is proud of its durability. It is proud of its slightly unexciting worthiness. And that’s cool, for keeping a core brand of loyal buyers

(2.0i SE Lineartronic as tested) à Max speed: 127 mph à 0-62 mph: 9.8 secs (est) à Combined mpg: 42.8 à Engine layout: 1995cc four-cylinder ‘boxer’ petrol à Max. power (PS): 156 à CO2: 152 g/km

Price: £24,995 content, but it will do nothing to lure new customers from competing manufacturers. Still, if you want a family-sized hatchback, then the Impreza is a safe bet – in more ways than one.
