Welcome to the October issue Here we are AUTUMN has arrived! I have dragged out our winter coats and hats and am definitely ready to get wrapped up on some lovely crisp days walking our dog. I love this time of year; hot chocolates, fires, winter walks, Halloween and Christmas isn’t too far around the corner! We recently celebrated our wedding anniversary by having a night away in Southwold. What a lovely place and I’d highly recommend a visit if you get the chance. We visited a hidden fish restaurant by the harbour and ended up trying all sorts of fish dishes – our favourite was the battered oyster. As Autumn is here this issue definitely has a warming theme, we look at how to ensure we are all looked after over the colder months, how to look after our skin in the biting winds and we have partnered with local companies to sponsor dogs at Jerry Green Rescue Centre who need to find a new home this winter. The sponsorship revenue pays for the advert for each four legged friend looking for a home as well as a 15% donation is made directly to the charity. Is there space in front of your fire for a new pooch? Will your child be starting school in 2019? We give our top tips of what to look for when choosing a school. This summer seems to be full of engagements…next year is going to be a busy one full of weddings; if you got engaged then please check out our guide to what you need to book and when.

Local Council scoops award for care of stray dogs South Holland District Council has been presented with a national award recognising the care and provision that they provide when dealing with stray dogs. The RSPCA have recognised the council’s stray dog work as part of their 2018 PawPrints Awards, introduced to showcase the achievements of local authorities and public service organisations who have gone above and beyond for animals over the last decade.

After winning a Silver award in 2017, this year South Holland were awarded with the highest attainment, a Gold Footprint. This acknowledges the work done across the entire journey of the council’s work with stray dogs, including the work of the warden, kennels, re-homing, veterinary care and the other staff who help to manage and administer the service. You can find out more about South Holland District Council’s dog warden service at www.sholland.gov.uk/ DogWarden.

New cash and card payment machines installed in 3 Spalding car parks Following the theft of the car parking machine in Spalding’s Vine Street car park last year, a new machine has now been installed and will be operational from Tuesday 28th August 2018. The machine will continue to allow users to pay by coin whilst also introducing the new option to pay by card.

This decision was taken by South Holland District Council following feedback from residents, to introduce a wider selection of payment options whilst retaining the existing provision. Similar machines have also been introduced in Herring Lane and Victoria Street car parks, and the use of these three new machines will be analysed in the coming months to identify the demand that exists for each method of payment. This, alongside an upcoming consultation on the Car Parking Order, will be used to ensure that the most appropriate methods of payments are available to car park users across the district. Cllr Roger GambbaJones, portfolio holder

for place said: “We really value the feedback and suggestions of the district’s residents and since the initial announcement on parking was made, it has been clear that people wanted the widest possible selection of payment options that we could offer. We are keen to show the importance in which we hold the opinions and reactions of our residents. “These three new machines will still offer many of the positives previously mentioned, including avoiding over-payment, more effective enforcement, easier management of takings and a reduction in the appeal of machine theft. Crucially though, we also remove the risk of anyone feeling isolated or excluded by the change in technology, and help encourage people into the town. “We hope that users will benefit from the choice and convenience of different payment options and that they will make the parking process as quick and easy as possible for everyone who uses them.” To view the locations and costs of our car parks, please visit www.sholland.gov.uk/carparks.

South Holland District Council Raises the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day South Holland District Council hosted a celebration at their Priory Road office in Spalding on Monday September 3, with a ceremonial raising of the Red Ensign flag in recognition of the work and the service of members of the Merchant Navy. The ceremony was led by council Chairman Cllr Rodney Grocock and he was joined by military veterans, members of the public, councillors and council officers and the Rt Hon John Hayes CBE MP. The event was held as part of Merchant Navy Day, the annual national campaign that started in 2000, held to recognise merchant seafarers both past and present since its formation in the 17th century.

Council Tax Support Scheme opens for consultation Every year the council has to decide whether to change the local Council Tax Support scheme for working age applicants in the area, and are looking for feedback on whether the changes best reflect the demands and needs of the district. Pensioners are not affected by changes made to the local scheme as the rules for applicants of pension age continues to be set by Central Government. The support scheme currently costs the council around £4.1 million a year, with 2,264 working age

households in South Holland receiving some level of support. One of the propositions for the forthcoming year include a new class of support for young people leaving care in South Holland, providing a discount of up to 100%. Young people leaving care constitute one of the most vulnerable groups in society, and this support would provide invaluable support on the transition towards adulthood and independence, aligning

Summer Fair Success For St John’s Care Home St John’s Care Home on Hawthorn Bank in Spalding enjoyed a fantastic Summer Fete with residents, staff, families and friends all participating in the day. There were stalls, games, face painting, 50/50 draw and refreshments, stalls were manned by staff and family members with prizes and equipment generously donated by local businesses. The 50/50 draw was won by Care Assistant, Leanne Gilbert and the sweet stall was manned by young helper Ethan Sharp, aged 9 (pictured). Entertainment was provided by the fantastic Karen Clare who had everyone singing along and dancing to all the old favourites. St John’s Choir, made up of staff and residents, sang ‘You are my sunshine’ and other songs they’d

been learning especially for the event. Residents particularly enjoyed seeing ‘Dolly Lichfield’ a 1935 Austin 10 Lichfield, whilst youngsters loved the bouncy castle kindly provided by Laken Inflatables. “We would like to thank everyone who came along on the day to support us” said Home Manager, Tracey Klue “we’ve had a fantastic day, our residents have loved seeing so many people here and the staff team have worked very hard to ensure we had a successful day”. The Fete raised over £400 which will go to the Resident’s Comfort Fund which helps to fund day trips and outings, entertainers and other special events for residents at St John’s Care Home.

Healthwatch Lincolnshire talks about … Pennygate Medical Centre With the retirement of Dr Nathu and the movement of the Spalding practice to Johnson Hospital, Healthwatch is aware that a number of patients are concerned about the practicalities of the move and the future of GP services at the Pennygate end of town. Healthwatch is hearing concerns focusing on how to access the service at Johnson both in terms of physically getting there, how to contact the practice and where to get repeat

prescriptions. All patients should be aware of an information pack which has been produced explaining the commonly asked questions. If you need a copy of the pack please contact us. Sarah Fletcher CEO of Healthwatch said “We hope that for most patients the move to GP services at Johnson Hospital will be positive, but we still have concerns for those patients who are frail and vulnerable that may find the new arrangement difficult.”

South Lincolnshire will be inviting the local community to comment and have their say on the future. A formal consultation process will commence early October and we will keep local residents informed of any information we receive. However in the meantime if you would like to share your views which will be passed on, please contact on us 01205 820892 or email info@ healthwatchlincolnshire.co.uk.

to be named after leader of suffragette movement

A scheme aimed at getting more people in South Holland walking has celebrated its ten year anniversary and organisers are keen to attract new members. The district’s Walking for Health initiative marked the occasion with a celebratory event at the South Holland Centre recently, which was attended by 130 walk leaders and volunteers. The scheme helps to support South Holland District Council’s priority of developing safer, stronger, healthier and more independent communities whilst protecting the most vulnerable. Walking for Health offers thirteen walks across the district run by eight walking groups. The health benefits of walking include: lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and strokes, improved heart, lungs and circulation performance, improved mood, reduced anxiety and it can help you sleep better. n this issue I am unashamedly going to promote mainly Holbeach shops but one in Spalding too! You may have noticed now that the summer is sadly nearly over advertising soon moves on to Halloween and shops look toward Christmas. Looking at what they were lifting in a field near to me it looks like a bumper crop of pumpkins so will look forward to the ever popular pumpkin festival in Spalding again this year, which is always a timely boost for traders in the town – look out for the details in the local press. Retailers nationally continue to have a hard time with many national stores going by the wayside and that trend is set to continue. High streets around the UK are having to adapt and change to survive. More use of leisure, be that tanning salons, gyms and coffee shops now compliment the more traditional shops that we have been used to in the past. Use of shopping apps and local pick up points in town centres will become the norm. However independent retailers and quality charity and community run shops are once again coming into their own. Holbeach has definitively picked up on this and is looking to concentrate more into the centre of town. Park Road right in the middle has a new community run bookshop, the appropriately named ,

Nick’s Notes Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

Th ere are many oth er little gems to explore in Holbeach and I cannot men tion th em all, but what I have found is that while th ere may be some empty hotels in Holbeach, th ere is very little you cannot buy in Holbeach, so "L ove Holbeach", buy local! “The Holbeach Bookshop”. There are many hundreds of books to choose from including those on local history, in a delightfully decorated shop with bespoke bookshelves made by Holbeach joiners J.T. Ward. The shop is run by volunteers, some of whom have previously run their own bookshop. Please do not bring any books though – there is no more room! Also to enjoy and browse are 21century collectibles right next door, where I recently purchased a magnificent table lamp – well impressed! On the other side of the Bookshop is a great gift shop, ‘Retro, Vintage, Modern’ well worth a look and on the opposite side of the street is the appropriately named ‘Crafty Dottie’, along with a very smart looking hairdressing shop – yes we have a few of those in Holbeach! The well respected local charity shop ‘Chosen’ which donates over £50,000 annually to local community groups is now represented on the High Street. While still lots of challenges with the Chequers Hotel ( currently for sale), the Bell and from the new year Lloyd’s Bank all empty, there is still lots to enjoy with Lisa’s ( not a lot you can’t find for the kitchen in there), the very popular Wholefood Shop and Card Shop and of course Tonwoods Hardware Store – there is nothing you can’t find in this excellent shop which now includes a tremendous range of pet food as well. It is also open 7 days a week. And if you are not getting tired by now carrying all the

shopping from those shops why not drop in at the best coffee shop in South Holland, ‘Café Aurora’, a truly excellent menu as well as the coffee and useful for meeting friends or business colleagues. In the middle of town is The Tea Room which is a popular stop next to Boots. The Lincolnshire Co-op provides an excellent and easily accessable service with post office, chemist and library on Fleet Street, along with another gem, ‘The Flower Basket’ which also has some excellent gifts as well as flowers. There are many other little gems to explore in Holbeach and I cannot mention them all, but what I have found is that while there may be some empty hotels in Holbeach, there is very little you cannot buy in Holbeach, so “Love Holbeach”, buy local! I do of course occasionally stray into Spalding while at the District Council and one notable relocation is ‘Charmed Interiors’ into larger premises where I recently purchased a very nice curtain rail ( the curtains came from ‘The Fabric Fae’ in the High Street in Holbeach), along with towels and pillows – two shops I would highly recommend. While it is always easy to criticise High Streets, we are lucky in South Holland to have so many good quality independent retailers – long may they continue.

Advice

Payday loans

Citizens Advice

...give free, confidential, impartial and independ ent advice to help you solve your problems

A payday loan is a short-term loan intended to tide you over until you next get paid. It’s an expensive way to borrow, but there are rules the lender has to follow. Before you take a payday loan Make sure you shop around for the best deal. Online payday lenders must publish their deals on at least 1 price comparison website so you can compare their deal with others. The price comparison site must be regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. You can check in the Financial Services Register if a price comparison website is regulated. Make sure you use the company’s name rather than the website name when checking - it’ll usually be on their homepage. When you apply for a loan, before lending you any money, a lender should check whether you’ll be able to pay it back. This means that, for example, the lender should check you’ve got enough money coming in each month to be be able pay the loan back. The lender should also explain the main features of the loan, including how much you will have to pay back, what happens if you do not pay the loan back, that you may be charged extra if you do not pay the loan back on time and that the loan is not suitable for long-term borrowing. The lender should also explain

how continuous payment authorities (CPAs) work and how they can be cancelled. All adverts for payday loans, including adverts sent by email or text message, must include the following warning ‘Late repayment can cause you serious money problems. For help, go to www. moneyadviceservice.org.uk.’ From 2 January 2015, there is an interest cap on payday loans of 0.8% per day and no borrower should have to pay back more than twice what they have borrowed. Paying back a payday loan Usually you’ll be given up to a month to pay back the money you borrowed, plus interest. The most common way to pay back a payday loan is through your bank debit card. When you get the loan you agree to let the lender take the money from your bank account. This is called a continuous payment authority (CPA). If there isn’t enough money in your account to repay the loan on the agreed date, the lender may keep asking your bank for all or part of the money. Charges will be added for late payment. However, your lender shouldn’t use the CPA more than twice if they’ve not been able to get the money from your account, and they shouldn’t try to take a part payment. From 2 January 2015, if you take out a 30 day loan and repay on time you should not be charged more than £24 in fees and charges for every £100 borrowed. If you default on the loan the lender can only charge a default fee of £15. Extending a payday loan If you are having problems paying back the loan, the lender may offer you longer to pay. The lender

may do this by giving you more time to pay the loan or by rolling the loan over. A rollover works by making a new agreement for the repayment of the original loan. Beware of extending your loan or agreeing to it being rolled over because you will have to repay more money to the lender as you will be charged extra interest, extra fees or other extra charges. Your lender shouldn’t roll over your loan more than twice. Also, when a lender rolls over a loan, they’ll also need to give you an information sheet which tells where you can get free debt advice.

Top Tips

Other ways to borrow short-term • Payday loans are an expensive way to help people over temporary problems. They are not suitable for longer-term difficulties. • A loan from a credit union is more affordable – check if there’s a credit union in your area • If you have a bank account, you may be able to agree an overdraft. But be careful of going overdrawn without permission as this can be very expensive. • If you’re on a low income and need money in an emergency, you may be able to get help from your local authority.

Weston Hills CofE Primary School We have had a very busy start to the new school year, with 22 new children starting with us. 20 of these were in our Reception class, and they have all settled very well. Parent meetings were held for all year groups within the first two weeks of the start of term. 11+ tests have taken place at local grammar schools for all Year 6 pupils hoping for a selective place at secondary school. Good luck! Class 4 have a trip booked to the National Space Centre in Leicester – this is linked to class topics for this term. Class 5 will be taking part in “Christmas Unwrapped” at the Baptist Church at the end of November. Year 5&6 children will be going on the annual four day residential trip to Aylmerton Field Study Centre in at the end of September/start of October. Tempest will be coming into school to take individual & sibling photographs this term, including any toddlers at the end of the school day. Our new “trim trail” has been installed following our successful bid for lottery funding. This is a wonderful addition to our playground. A Healthy Minds Workshop has taken place for children in Class 3 & 5. Rev. Brown will be coming in to take our Harvest Collective Worship on 8th October at 2.15 p.m. in the school hall. Parents welcome. Bikeability will be taking place for Year 6 children just after half term. Proud parents, bystanders and streams of well-wishers admired the procession as excited graduates paraded through the town centre after successfully graduating from their degree level courses at Higher Education Centre Stamford. The annual ceremony was once again held at Stamford Methodist Church on Barn Hill, celebrating another year of outstanding achievements from HND and Foundation Degree courses in Animal Management, Computing, Graphic Design, Photography, Performing Arts, Teaching and many more, all coming together for an unforgettable occasion. Once gowned in their robes and mortarboards, graduates

made the renowned journey to Stamford Methodist Church from the Town Hall. This year the centre welcomed key note speaker, Mathew Burton (most commonly known for his appearance on Channel 4’s documentary, Educating Yorkshire) who inspired graduates and their parents with a speech about what education meant to him, and how he gains satisfaction from making other peoples’ lives better, mentioning, that he knows the graduates sat in front of him will also do the same. Principal at New College Stamford, Janet Meenaghan said, ‘We were once again delighted to hold our Higher Education Centre graduation ceremony in the town and we extend our thanks to the Mayor, all at the Town Hall and at Stamford Methodist Church for helping us to host such a successful event. It’s always a pleasure to see our students receive their higher education diplomas and degrees and the graduation ceremony recognises their hard work and achievements, as

well as offering us the chance to thank parents and friends, and the teaching staff, for their contributions. Higher education is increasingly expensive and colleges offer a local and more cost-effective solution, with a range of courses and growing student numbers. At Higher Education Centre Stamford we pride ourselves on our personal and supportive approach and the high quality of our higher education courses. I’d like to congratulate all of our higher education students on their superb achievements.’ We wish all of our graduates the best for the future and hope they succeed whether they are going into further education on in to employment!

Ayscoughfee School Children joining the Kindergarten class at Ayscoughfee Hall School had a wonderful surprise as they left at the end of their first day…a beautiful personalised teddy bear proudly wearing the AHS uniform. All the children (and their parents) were delighted and we look forward to seeing the bears back on special occasions with the children as they continue through the school. Year 6 have already enjoyed a visit from Sinita, who spent a day with them introducing their new topic of ‘India’. Children learnt something of the Hindu religion and Indian culture and are very excited about following up the visit with further research and activities. Reception and Years 2 and 6 are enjoying their first Forest School experience of the year. All

children will have this brilliant opportunity in the months to come, developing team building skills as well as experiencing camp fires, den building and making pulleys and baskets. We look forward to another action packed year …watch this space!

Mini Police Mini Police is a new primary-school engagement launched in Lincolnshire in September 2018.

A

s I write this article, the school holidays are over, and children across the county are returning to school. Lincolnshire Police’s Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are arranging and holding talks with pupils in schools, explaining the role, expectations and responsibilities of being a Mini Police officer. These are: • To be a good citizen • To respect fellow pupils • To help to address conflicts in school • To encourage good behaviour • To provide information and advice Pupils in Years 5 and 6 will be being asked to think about what individual qualities they would bring to Mini Police, why they want to be involved, and to prepare election speeches. In the coming weeks, those wanting to become Mini Police will be asked to stand up and present their speeches to their peers. Pupils will then vote for the pupils they think will make the best candidates. Head teachers at schools have been given two lists of topics which PCSOs will deliver to Mini Police over the coming two academic years – ‘National Priorities’ and ‘Local Priorities’. Each term, one topic from each list will be delivered. National priorities are six topics chosen by Lincolnshire Police and must be delivered across a two year period. These

topics include Anti-Bullying, Digital Resilience (online safety), Anti-Social Behaviour and Fatal Four (Road Safety)). Local Priorities are topics chosen by head teachers as being relevant to each individual school. These topics include School Parking, Safe Strangers, Bike Marking and Crime Prevention. Lots has been going on behind the scenes in recent weeks to get everything ready for the rollout to all 119 schools – packing uniforms, sorting equipment, delivering bespoke training to our PCSOs and arranging school visits. Current Mini Police in Boston found a few hours during their school holidays to join Boston Neighbourhood Policing Team at a ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ on a Saturday in August. They revealed the ‘Minis’ which are used for PCSOs to be able to get to school engagements, and showed police uniforms and equipment to children at the picnic. They even managed to include fingerprinting demonstrations, explaining what they had learnt about different types of fingerprints. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with the public, introducing the Mini Police project to children at schools around the county who will be joining the project. They were also joined by Bella, our PCSO Bear who was a huge hit with the children!

Village

Tails By Jo Wright Put your best paw forward! It’s time to take a tour of one of our beautiful surrounding villages with a well-loved Labrador.

I

’m a hound on holiday in Old Hunstanton! Even a loyal Labrador like me needs a rest from retrieving, and what better place than the beach? Sand, sea and even sun! My dog friendly hotel room is super, even if my humans have forgotten to bring my basket. Not to worry. I’ll just curl up on their bed after a busy day. So, what does a canine on vacation get up to? There is so much to get my nose twitching and tail wagging. The sound of breaking waves, and smell of salt from the sea and on freshly fried chips. Squeals of joy and yells of delight from young and old. Bright kites soaring, balls for throwing, catching and kicking,

buckets filled with shells and shingles. But what I really like is the sand beneath my paws and the sea breeze blowing under my ears.

I had so many plans – a walk along the shoreline, a look at the Lifeboat, a pootle to a few pooch friendly coastal pubs. But I’m let off my lead and my humans are free too, so we are happy to simply spend our break building sandcastles and splashing in the sea. One day there is even a boat for me to wander up to – called The Seadog! Mind you, I did make it into New Hunstanton’s arcades to put my hound pounds into the slot machines. Was I a winner? Not in terms of money, but yes according to my tummy, because the staff fed me lots of dog biscuits! My humans like to go to Lanzarote at Easter time, so when summer rolls around, it’s my turn to choose. And where else would I want to go? Old Hunstanton is the only place for this old dog. For making memories and new friends (four legs and two), there’s nowhere finer.

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

eaning was one of my favourite milestones when my son was growing up. Food is something we love in this house and it seemed a very natural progression to include him at mealtimes. Weaning doesn’t feel like that for everyone though and for some families it’s just another event where you don’t feel like you really know what you’re doing. Weaning onto solid food is all about the 3 Ps. Perspective, Perspective and Perspective. The first P reflects your own perspective of food. Do you love it? Do you hate it? Do you cook from scratch 7 days a week or do you only like chicken and chips? How you see food will directly affect how you look at weaning. Those who have a poor diet and might be considered ‘picky eaters’ will either end up passing that onto their children, or go the other way and try to ensure that their children have an absolutely glorious diet. The 2nd P is perspective on what you would consider a weaning ‘win’. So at 12-14 months, what would you like to achieve? A child that eats anything put in front of them? A child that will try anything? A child that enjoys fruit and veg? The final P is to do with what a successfully weaned child ‘looks like’. Generally, at the start of the weaning process, parents feel eating a certain quantity of food is the way to measure success. Looking at a portion size of a 12-14 month old – the

size and thickness of their palm is an average amount of what they might eat. So in one meal, lets say breakfast…they might eat a piece of toast the size and thickness of their palm, plus the same quantity of scrambled egg and 2 palms worth of fruit or veg – strawberries and grapes perhaps. That actually equates to about a quarter of a slice of toast, a heaped tablespoon of egg, 2 strawberries and 4 grapes. That’s not a lot of food really – and that’s only what you’re working towards at the end of the journey. Everything before then is just for practice. A few licks of a spoon or slurps on a broccoli tree (depending whether you’re parent-led or baby-led) is a really positive start. Incredible even. Obviously, there are going to be babies and children at all points along the weaning journey that will eat way more that that. Some babies dive right in and some are slower to get the idea. Neither one is more right than the other. When it comes to types of first foods to give, veg before fruit (not as sweet and babies aren’t stupid!), veg and fruit before carbs (less likely to get constipated) and introduce proteins after the first week. There aren’t enough calories in fruit and veg for babies to successfully sustain themselves so proteins and carbs are absolutely necessary if you want to make any kind of dent in their milk intake.

Family life

School Choices I’m not sure how but this year, my husband and I will be joining the many local parents in selecting a primary school for our son. Time has flown by and I am already a little bit sad that this precious time will be broken up with the routine of school….not to mention the queues whenever you go out in holiday time as well as the cost of holidays themselves! But on the plus side I know he is looking forward to the journey and I cannot wait to see how he flourishes.

Where we live we do not have an obvious choice so we are visiting several schools and therefore I have had to do lots of research into what to look for, as personally I don’t always feel an Ofsted score tells the whole story, it’s a good indicator but you want to know the choice is right for your child academically, mentally and socially. Looking at Ofsted reports can provide a steer on how somewhere’s doing but it’s important to remember that a school could be doing brilliantly one year and then for all sorts of reasons – like a change of head teacher – might go down in the rankings 12 months later. So whilst you start organising visits to any of the local primary schools you think you’d like them to attend it’s a good idea to think of some key questions to ask too. Be sure to take note of the way staff respond to your questions as well as what they actually say. It speaks volumes if you feel they’re engaging with you, and genuinely seem to care about putting any of your fears and worries to rest rather than hurrying your questions along. 1. How do they settle children if they get lost or seem unhappy? Your child is really quite young when they start school, 5 at the most or maybe barely 4, so you want to know that they’ll be OK if they fall over in the playground or get lost between the lunchroom and class. Are they kept separate from the older kids in the playground in the first few weeks? It’s a while away now but once their first day arrives you’ll really want peace of mind that they’re going to be OK. 2. What’s the child-to-teacher ratio? While there are government standards on this (no class should have more than 30 children) you might find some schools differ slightly, especially among the older children, in terms of how many teaching assistants (if any) they have per class: you might be swayed towards one school if it turns out they have more adults per class as the pupils get older. 3. Does the school provide lunch - and if so, what’s it like? Every child in the first three years of school

is currently entitled to a free school meal – but what kind of food can they expect? And what happens after that? Do you need to provide a packed lunch? This can take some time to get used to so the sooner you know the sooner you can get your head around it. If they do need to bring lunch with them when they’re bigger what can and CAN’T they have? (Some schools can be VERY particular.) 4. Are there morning and after school clubs? Life, let’s face it, is busy. If you’re a working parent, you’ll need to think about the workschool juggle. Nurseries often run from 8am to 6pm, school hours are more like 8.50am to 3.30pm – that’s a big difference. Make sure you find out how popular it is too and get your name on the list as soon as you can if you know you’re going to need it. 5. Is there an open-door policy? Or – put plainly – as a parent is it possible for me to come into the school and meet with my child’s teacher or the head teacher at fairly short notice if I have any concerns or issues? It’s really important for a parent to feel there will be someone on hand to talk to if you have any worries about how your child’s doing. 6. What’s their take on bullying? Depending on your own views about discipline, the way one school deals with bullies might resonate with you more than another. And while it’s not something any parent wants to have to deal with – knowing your child’s school’s views on it and yours are aligned can only be a good thing.

right? On the other hand, perhaps you’re more one for innovation, in which case this news might make you wonder if the teaching is a bit old-fashioned. 8. Is there a recent parent survey? Some schools carry out parent surveys to find out how parents think they’re doing and to look at what they can do better. If you ask and they do have a recent one you can look at – that’s a pretty good start. 9. How do you support high or low achievers? Most children are, by definition, in the ‘average’ bracket when it comes to education. But if you are concerned that your child might have learning difficulties – or perhaps they seem exceptionally bright – it might be worth asking if they put on extra classes for these children or offer alternative teaching. 10. Do you enjoy working here? Hopefully you’ll get a resounding YES to this one from anyone you ask at the school from the secretary to a teaching assistant to the head. We’re not saying they should skip into school every morning with limitless joy in their hearts as though every school day is entirely and utterly peachy. But any hesitation on this one, or side glances to a colleague, and it might just get you wondering if it’s the best environment for your child.

7. How long have the staff been working here? Depending on your own views about discipline, tIt might make you infinitely happy to hear that Mr Smith and at least four other teachers have been there for 30 years and none of the staff have been there less than 6 – after all, they seem like good signs of stability, www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 23

here is a lot going on in Crowland! Of course there are the town’s two main historical points of interest which are the ruined medieval Crowland Abbey and the 14th-century threesided bridge, Trinity Bridge, which stands at its central point and used to be the confluence of three streams. However, there is a wide selection of shops and services in the town including cafÊ, garden centre, hairdressers, convenience stores, restaurants, public houses and much more. A thriving market town,

Crowland supports a population of approximately 4,200 with the majority of the residents living within the town itself. The town is a pleasant mix of older properties surrounding the Trinity Bridge and Crowland Abbey and several large modern housing estates on the edges which overlook the rural landscape. A feature of the town is the many greens in the centre of the streets radiating out from the Trinity Bridge. Next time you are driving past, why not pop in and see what is on offer!

Food & drink October is definitely a foodie month with several days and weeks planned for national celebrations of some of the most loved foods and drinks in the country!

National Curry Week 22nd to 28th October The first National Curry Week took place in October 1998 and was founded by the late Peter Grove. His vision was to drive awareness and appreciation of the burgeoning Indian restaurant industry, whilst also raising funds for charity. The UK’s love of curry is stronger than ever, and National Curry Week continues to grow in importance every year. Kingfisher Beer is the lead sponsor of National Curry Week. Being India’s No.1, it is the first choice of Delhi to Doddanapudi, and the leading beer the world over. With a variety of ways to get involved in National Curry Week, from holding your own cracking curry night at home to eating out at one of the tip-top participating

y a D ee f f o C 1st October

Attention! All coffee lovers and the coffee confused restaurants, be sure to join in as Kingfisher Beer make the 20th National Curry Week second-tonaan.

World Egg Day - 12th October World Egg Day is celebrated on the second Friday in October. It was founded by the International Egg Commission (IEC) at a conference held in Vienna in 1996. The idea behind the day was raising awareness across the world, of the

28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

l a n o i t a n r e t In

important place eggs have in human nutrition. The IEC was formed in 1964 in order to give a global presence to egg producers and to promote and popularize egg consumption as part of a balanced diet.

International Coffee Day is back! If the only way to start your day is with a coffee then get celebrating. October 1st 2018 sees the return of International Coffee Day. Now in it’s 4th year, its a day when Nations come together to raise a mug to one of the UK’s best loved imports. Whether it’s a Macchiato or a Cappuccino that takes your fancy or only an Espresso will do, it’s a day to embrace the coffee bean. The International Coffee Organization has chosen a very special theme for this year’s celebrations: ‘Women in Coffee’. Women play as important a role in the whole of the coffee chain as men, from planting the seeds to processing to trading to brewing… and drinking it. Have you ever

thought about how many women it took for you to be able to drink your daily cuppa? The idea for the 2018 campaign goes beyond paying homage to women! The International Coffee Organization want to highlight the need for equity and equality in the coffee sector, from bean to cup, and that can only be achieved by empowering women to the benefit of the whole coffee sector.

Health & Beauty

Why Is Acne Worse In Winter? Natural Lipids. The cold air from outside contains less moisture than the warm or hot air linked to other three seasons of the year, and this leads to weather related dryness. The harsh chilly winds strip your skin of its natural surface lipids. Usually, the lipids hold in moisture and keep dirt and other environmental toxins out. With the lipid protection gone, bacteria gets in and causes acne breakouts in winter. Air Temperature. During winter you mostly stay indoors, so you are exposed to dry air most of the time. When you go out in the cold weather, you’re exposing your body to a sudden change in the air temperature. The skin gets affected, and even this may lead to acne breakout. Hot Shower.

There is nothing more stressreducing and satisfying than taking a hot shower after commuting in cold conditions. But do remember that high temperatures can strip your skin of its natural oils, proteins and fats. This action leads to inflammation, itching and even peeling and aggravates the condition of acne. Aim for warm temperatures in the shower. Central Heating and Dry Air. To combat the cold, we use central heating in our homes. The artificial heating means less moisture in the air which can dry the skin and lead to acne breakouts. Layers of dead cells form on the skin’s surface and prevent sebum from flowing freely. Dry Skin Build Up. Your skin dries out from external

factors, and if you compensate by adding a rich moisturizer, it causes a buildup of dead skin that clogs pores. Stress and Lack of Sleep. . There may be less natural daylight which prompts your body to be less active. If you push yourself to exert more, you could become tired and stressed out which could lead to acne breakouts. Skin Care Products. Due to increased work pressure sometimes you may go to bed without completing your evening skincare routine. Since you won’t be cleaning your pores, it can cause acne breakouts. Changing seasons can bring in new skincare products. You must choose the right formulas

for your skin type. Otherwise, your skin could suffer due to blemishes. Hats and Scarves. When you wear hats and scarves, you’re creating a closed environment between your skin and the wool outerwear. The hats cover your forehead and scarves your lower face; these can trap oil and encourage breakouts.

How to Do a Basic At-Home Facial

This basic five-step facial can be done once a week and works on all skin types including oily, dry, and combination skin. Most importantly, take some time to relax while you treat yourself to a spa night. Afterward, you’ll enjoy the look and feel of your fresh, glowing skin and feel rejuvenated.

Step 1: Cleanse The first step in any facial is to cleanse your skin with a cleanser formulated for your skin type. To cleanse your skin, rinse your face and neck first in lukewarm—never hot—water. Then dot the cleanser on your forehead, cheeks, chin, and neck. Massage the product into your face and neck in a circular motion for at least a minute, making sure to get around the nose and the chin. Rinse your face and neck with a warm washcloth.

Don’t forget to remove eye makeup with a makeup remover.

Step 2: Exfoliate There are several ways to exfoliate your skin. 1. Apply a gentle exfoliating facial scrub in a circular motion on your face. 2. Using your fingers, concentrate on the areas around your nose and forehead. If you have combination skin, work harder on the areas that tend to be “greasy.” 3. Use a soft washcloth soaked in warm water to rinse your face. The washcloth itself acts as a natural exfoliant. Step 3: Steam There are several ways to steam your face. It can be as simple as filling your sink with warm water. Dip a washcloth in and press it to your face, repeating two or three times. If you prefer, you can take it further and boil water in a teapot. By adding soothing herbs, you can enhance the experience and be left feeling even more rejuvenated. Step 4: Mask Just like all skin care products, you have many options when it comes to a face mask. For oily skin, use a clay-based face mask. If you have dry

30 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

skin, go for a hydrating gel or cream mask. You can also save money by creating your own facial mask from common household ingredients. Things like oatmeal, sugar, and coffee are perfect for any skin type. Apply the mask, avoiding the areas around the eyes. Keep it on for 10 to 20 minutes (or according to the directions on the product). Cucumbers are not necessary, though they can do wonders for relieving tired eyes. Sit back and relax. This is the time when some soothing music and a few candles can really add to the spa experience. When the time is up, be sure to rinse the mask off completely. Step 5: Moisturiser Many home facial recommendations suggest using a toner in between the mask and moisturiser. However, toners are not necessary. If you have oily skin, it may not be a bad idea. For every other skin type, the other products will leave your face clean and give you a healthy glow. Whether you tone or not, moisturising your refreshed skin is the last step in your facial. Smooth on a soothing, basic moisturizer over your face and neck. If you want something that’s both organic and cheap, try extra virgin coconut oil.

Planning your Wedding

Wedding timelines can be intimidating to write for the first time. Even if you’ve attended a lot of weddings, you probably haven’t paid much attention to how long each individual aspect lasted (barring the rare occasion that you end up in direct sunlight at an hour-long outdoor ceremony on a 90 degree day, which nobody forgets). Getting started can be the toughest part, so we put together

Wedding Day Timeline with a 4p.m. Start Time

Because the 4 p.m. ceremony time, 12p.m. reception end (with both ceremony and reception in the same venue) 10:00 a.m.—Hair and makeup / Getting ready 12:00–2:00 p.m.—Most vendors arrive for setup 2:00 p.m.—Wedding party and family photos start 3:30 p.m.—Doors open / Room ready for guests / Preceremony music starts 4:00 p.m.—Invite time 4:00 p.m.—Ceremony starts 4:35 p.m.—Ceremony ends 4:40 p.m.—Cocktail hour starts 5:45 p.m.—Move guests into dinner 6:00 p.m.—Buffet opens / Dinner served 6:20 p.m.—All guests have food 6:30 p.m.—Toasts 7:00 p.m.—Evening guests arrive 7:30 p.m.—First dance 7:35 p.m.—General dancing music starts 8:30 p.m.—Buffet Food Served 11:45 p.m.—Last call 11:55 p.m.—Music off 12:00 midnight —Guests depart

templates for a few different types of weddings to ease you into the process. Keep in mind that your timeline is just a guideline! Your wedding will not fall to pieces if it runs a little bit ahead or behind. Don’t get stressed out and especially allow timings to be the sole focus of the day, make sure you are able to relax and allow the day to flow.

supplying quali ty window blinds

for almost 20 years

S

utterton based Suntec Blinds have been supplying quality window blinds to customers throughout Lincolnshire for almost 20 years. With a modern factory in the village, 95% of the blinds which the company sell are made locally by local people using tried and tested hardware and fabrics from some of the industry’s leading manufacturers. Suntec doesn’t have shops or showrooms, their knowledgeable friendly consultants visit customers in their own homes allowing them to select the blinds and fabrics required in the environment in which they are going to be fitted. This gives the customer the opportunity to match fabrics to their furnishings etc. The direct from the factory approach means that customers enjoy some very competitive prices. As a Suntec customer you can be sure that you will not be subjected to any ‘hard sell’ tactics. Your Consultant will listen to what you wish to achieve with your new blinds. They will give any advice you may require about suitable blind types and show you the fabric or material options which are available to you. After measuring your windows they will work out a price for you there and then. If you are happy with the price we will process your order and make your blinds. The same consultant will then return to fit your blinds and demonstrate how to operate them. The whole process usually takes around 2 weeks. For customers’ peace of mind all blinds are covered by a no quibble 5 year guarantee Old favourites like Vertical and Roller blinds are available with hundreds of fabrics and finishes available to suit any modern interior. Venetian blinds are offered with traditional aluminium slats which offer over 100 colour options, and also the very popular wooden slatted venetian blind. Over the years the window blind industry has evolved with innovative new blinds to suite modern interiors and lifestyles and Suntec have kept abreast of these advances. Modern blinds like Perfect fit and INTU blinds require no drilling or screws and are ideal for conservatories. With the company being accredited suppliers of Perfect Fit International

The range of blinds also includes Roman Blinds with a massive choice of fabrics, Pleated Blinds, including the Hive range which is a cellular fabric offering some excellent insulation properties as well as being aesthetically pleasing and Mirage or Vision blinds. Over recent years interior plantation shutters have become very popular. These offer excellent privacy and like most blinds increase the energy efficiency. As you would expect, Suntec are able to supply and fit these with ranges available in both wood and increasingly popular faux wood. To round off the range, the company also offer external patio awnings and canopies from one of the UK’s leading made to measure exterior shading product manufacturers. Funerals

M

Organising Wakes & Life Celebrations any British funeral traditions and customs that are still alive and thriving today date back to the Victorian era. It was at this time that society developed strict codes of conduct in how a person should be mourned and how funeraltheir event, butbeunfortunately, at some point, most life should celebrated.

No one wants to think about organising a the fact that are you are attending. of us will have to face the daunting task of Despite planning thefunerals funeral of someone close. Personal Touches It’s often a good idea to sometimes ignore tradition and think of their wake in more positive ways. Rather than mourning someone’s passing, why not host ‘David’s Farewell Party’ and party in his memory rather than mourn his absence. If your great aunt loved to go out for afternoon tea, then you’ve got the perfect solution for her funeral party catering – simply serve afternoon tea to your guests in her honour knowing that you’d not only have her blessing, but that the significance of your choice will be truly appreciated by all those who attend. Comfort Food And while we’re thinking about catering for a wake, it’s important to remember that now isn’t the moment for anything overly complicated or fussy. It’s going to be a challenging day for many, and when you’re feeling low and fragile, what people crave most is comfort food and endless cups of tea. Alcohol There’s a fine line when encouraging your guests to drink, but for most, a stiff drink is necessary to take the edge off a deeply distressing occasion. If

you’re making a speech, have a small drink to help steady your nerves before you speak. You should definitely make a toast to absent friends, and almost certainly have another one, simply because it’s what he or she would have wanted you to do. Quiet Spaces When choosing a venue, try and opt for somewhere that gives you flexibility and has some quiet, private spaces where guests can go for a moment of quiet reflection. Ideally, pick a venue where you have a number of rooms at your disposal so people can mingle, or take time alone as they wish. If you are booking a venue where you won’t have exclusive use, ask the events team to make sure that you have the use of an area that can be made private and closed off to avoid any disturbances. Music Booking a musician or group for the event can help create a pleasant atmosphere and removes those awkward silences when no one knows quite what to say. If you don’t have a live music option, then a playlist of your loved one’s favourite artist is a nice way to pay tribute to their passing.

Celebrating 25 Years of Success

Fitzgerald’s Bed Centre opened it’s doors 25 years ago in Bourne and is now celebrating 9 years of trading here, in Spalding. The family business also has stores in Stamford and Peterborough. Back in 2009 in the midst of the recession local businessman Paul Fitzgerald bucked the trend of filling the space of an empty retail outlet. The bed store in Westlode Street has welcomed hundreds of new customers through the doors since opening on September 25th 2009.

The First Fitzgerald’s Bed Store It was 25 years ago that Paul opened the first Fitzgerald’s Bed Store in Bourne which has always been based on Abbey Road. Eleven years ago he also opened in Stamford on West Street and 7 years ago he opened his fourth store at Cygnet Park, Hampton, Peterborough. All four stores offer a wide choice of beds at very competitive prices and Paul prides himself on the company’s excellent customer service and will often go that extra mile for his customers. Fitzgeralds Spalding branch is under the management of Ian Yarnell who has been with the company for 9 years and offers all customers a wealth of knowledge. Both Paul and Ian are passionate about good old fashioned customer service.

Competitive and The Best Price “We are all programmed now to look for the best price and of course here at Fitzgerald’s Beds we always aim to be competitive We are often asked many questions relating to th e best but there is much mattress for h ealth condi tions and i t isn"t a simple one more to buying such an important piece size fits all, i t"s often a case of trying three or four for 5 of furniture than or 10 minutes to see which has th e right feel and comfort the price. Looking After the Elderly:

Keep Warm this Winter As we get older, our bodies respond differently to the cold which can leave us more susceptible to serious health problems. But with a little preparation, and by following some simple suggestions, you can stay healthy, safe and comfortable this winter. How can I keep my home warm? • Close the curtains in the evenings and fit thermal linings if you can. This will keep the heat in. • Keep your bedroom window closed at night when the weather is cold. The coldest time of the day is just before dawn and breathing in cold air increases the risk of chest infections. • Draught-proof doors and windows, insulate the loft, lag the hot-water tank and pipes, and consider getting cavity-wall insulation. These measures will help to keep your home warm and your energy bills down – and you may be able to get financial help to set these up. • Keep your main living room heated to 21°C (70°F). • Heat your bedroom to 18°C (64°F). How can I heat my home efficiently? Energy prices are high, but heating your home is easier and cheaper if it’s well insulated and your heating works properly. • Get to know how the timer and thermostat on your heating system work. You may be able to set the timer to switch the heating on earlier. • Have your heating system serviced each year and check that it’s working before the cold weather starts. Gas heating must be serviced by a Gas Safe-registered engineer. • Ask your energy supplier about their Priority Services Register, which gives older or disabled people extra help and support. Safety around the house • Get your heating system serviced every year by a qualified professional to ensure it’s running safely. • Make sure your smoke alarm is working. Change the batteries every 12 months. • You can ask your local fire service for a free safety check of your home. You may be eligible to get free smoke alarms installed. • Put guards on open fires, and be careful not to hang washing too close to the fire. • Don’t block up air vents. Fires and heaters need ventilation. • Test your carbon monoxide alarms. If don’t have

40 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

any alarms, you need to get one fitted in each room that has a gas appliance, as there’s a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if air vents become blocked. • Keep a torch handy in case you lose power. • Keep your radio, mobile phone, laptop or tablet charged, so you can use the battery power if there’s no electricity. • Keep a list of emergency numbers, such as your utility companies, by your phone. If there is a power cut, call the 105 electricity helpline. Can I get any financial help with my energy bills? Make sure you’re not missing out on any benefits or discounts that will help keep you and your home warm. • Contact the Energy Saving Trust as you may be able to get extra financial help from the Energy

Companies Obligation (ECO) • Check your current energy tariff and shop around to see if you can get a better deal. Visit Ofgem’s website to find a price comparison site or contact your current provider. • If you’re having difficulty paying your bills, talk to your energy company or contact Charis Grants can direct you to grants to help with utility bills. Companies should not disconnect all-pensioner households during winter months. • You may be entitled to a Warm Home Discount on your electricity bill if you receive Pension Credit or if you’re on a low income. It’s a one-off discount usually made between October and March. • You could also be entitled to certain benefits such as Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment to help with heating costs.

Business Focus

Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms

E

veryone agrees that the kitchen is the heart of any home and that you can’t beat a relaxing long soak in a luxurious bath to unwind at the end of a hard and tiring working day. Nobody knows that better than Stephen and Sarah Devonport who turned a longterm dream into a reality when they set up their own Devonports kitchen and bathroom design and installation business in Deeping St James. “It all began over 14 years ago with a desire to provide people with beautiful bathrooms and kitchens married up with expert design, advice and customer service,” said Sarah. They worked out of a home office and van in the early days of the business but were so driven with the dream of one day having their own showroom, that it was only a matter of time before the couple realised their ambition.

We are not driven by a team of sales staff, we have no targets or limits to reach or achieve, only the ones that we set ourselves to make our customers’ experiences enjoyable and personal. “We enjoyed many years of continued growth and success and our dream finally became a reality in 2009 when Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms was born,” said Sarah. “Our initial showroom started out at 45 Bridge Street, Deeping St James and we now occupy the neighbouring two units which has allowed us to expand our existing showroom with further kitchen and bathroom displays.” The Devonports’ kitchens, along with its fitted bathroom furniture, are manufactured in Birmingham by Mereway Limited, which has more than 30 years of continued growth and success. They have three ranges within their kitchen portfolio and expanding into the showroom next door has given the Devonports the opportunity to display even more options. The new kitchen settings have been specifically designed to showcase different door styles and colours and different styles

of worktop. “We have included different ideas for islands that incorporate seating at breakfast bar level height and table height to give numerous options and ideas when planning a kitchen,” said Sarah. “Our existing showroom houses even more kitchen settings with laminate, Granite, Quartz and Corian worktops, all in an array of colours and shapes to show the beauty that can be created from all materials. “Just a change of worktop in your kitchen can often breathe new life and vitality into a room that perhaps felt tired before.” “At Devonports we strive to offer that something extra to the kitchen and bathroom buying experience. “We are not driven by a team of sales staff, we have no targets or limits to reach or achieve, only the ones that we set ourselves

to make our customers’ experiences enjoyable and personal. “We listen, which we believe is quite possibly the most important part of our communication with you, and we offer practical and knowledge-based advice. “We do not take it lightly that we are welcomed into people’s homes and so we always treat them with the utmost respect, keeping our working environment as clean and tidy as possible at all times.” Devonports has its own team of in-house kitchen and bathroom fitters, and uses the services of the same tilers, electricians and plasterers that it has for many years. “Whether you are looking to change your kitchen worktops, replace your bath with a shower or build a brand new extension to incorporate a new kitchen we can take care of it all,” said Sarah.

Toyota CH-R Dynamic Hy

T

he Toyota C-HR is a car you quite easily may not even have heard of. It’s very much in the shadows of its rivals, like the Nissan Qashqai. You can pick up a new C-HR for £21,595, which is more than £2,300 than the entrylevel Qashqai, but the model we have on test here is the hybrid version with Dynamic trim – the top of the range. It costs £28,615 – so it had better be worth it. Whilst the car is a similar shape and size to the Qashqai, its roof slopes towards the rear far more so than the Nissan (think BMW X4/ X6) and that means there’s less room inside.

44 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

But it’s got very aggressive styling and even the entry-level models have a lot of kit with it. The Dynamic comes with rear camera, touchscreen, DAB radio, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, sat-nav, smart entry and pushbutton start, park assist – and that really is skimming the surface. The C-HR shares a lot of its DNA with the Toyota Prius, so it’s only to be expected that the C-HR is available as a hybrid version which cuts fuel consumption to 72.4 miles per gallon. Its electric motor blends with a 1.8 litre four-cylinder petrol engine,

producing 122 PS and gets from a 0-62 mph in 11 seconds. It also comes with a one-speed gearbox and, if that’s raised your eyebrows, don’t worry – it’s CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and its use is on the increase. That said, the lack of a traditional engine rev will take some getting used to, unless you’re used to driving electrics or hybrids. In the C-HR, it does feel a little sluggish, even though its performance is comparable with the Qashqai and other rivals. Whilst the C-HR is very well designed for a comfortable ride, the hybrid models are

ybrid 1.8 CVT First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups heavier, meaning you’ll get a more relaxed ride in the nonhybrid models. Nevertheless, Toyota has done a good job. The extra weight of the hybrid also means it doesn’t handle quite as well as the purely-petrol-powered models, but this won’t be noticeable most of the time, unless you’re really looking to throw it round corners. If you are, the chances are you’ll be looking at a performance model and you won’t be after a hybrid. The interior improves Toyota’s reputation of dullness and it’s a nice place to be, though you won’t struggle to find better interiors elsewhere.

There’s plenty of room in the front, but the sloping roof means you won’t want to be in the back if you’re tall. Boot space is also disappointing in comparison with its rivals, with the folding seats not as convenient. To sum up, the hybrid is great for fuel saving but adds plenty of drawbacks. And, coupled with the Dynamic trim, it makes it rather too expensive. The sheer amount of equipment means one of the lesser models should suffice for most. And, unless your focus is fuel economy, so too should the petrol engine – without the hybrid.

aul from Clean and Clear Chimneys is a professionally trained chimney sweep and Hetas trained stove installer based in Whaplode, covering a 35 mile radius from Whaplode including Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Rutland. We met up with Paul to find out more about what he offers local residents. I’m dedicated to safety and cleanliness and pride myself on leaving your home as clean as when I arrived, leaving you with peace of mind knowing your chimney is safe to use. Prior to becoming a sweep, I was a time served precision engineer with over 20 years working in several types of precision component manufacture. This gives me a keen eye for detail. I’m fully insured for peace of mind. All chimneys/flues are swept using a manual or rotary brush system and vacuum service also I provide a certificate which confirms your chimney has been swept to the industry code of practice. These certificates are recognised by insurance companies. I carry a wide variety of
