I know we all say it, but I really cannot believe it is November already! October has been a busy month for me. We went along to The Pumpkin Parade earlier in the month and how fantastic was that?! It is great to see the people of Spalding celebrating the area we live in. It really is countdown now to Christmas (sorry!), I have already started my shopping and plan to have it all done by the end of November. Some of my friends have already finished and started wrapping – I’m not that organised! As the weather has turned, make sure you wrap up warm and keep an eye on any elderly neighbours as the winter really is about to set in!

Pumpkin Festival hailed a success

Play equipment helps pupils

This year’s Spalding Pumpkin Festival has been hailed as a great success and may have attracted a record attendance. Thousands of revellers packed into the town centre to enjoy an enchanting celebration of all things pumpkin on Friday. Although final figures are still being counted, it is estimated that the event may have drawn more visitors than ever before. Crowds were treated to a day of entertainment including live music, a charity market, craft workshops, cooking demonstrations and competitions. The festival was rounded off with a spectacular fireworks display from the top of the South Holland Centre. Nick Worth, portfolio holder for community, said: “This year’s Spalding Pumpkin Festival was definitely one of the best. The event attracted large crowds to the town centre who enjoyed a fun-filled day of Harvest themed entertainment. “We have already had lots of positive feedback from people who attended from all over the district and further afield. We would like to thank everyone who came along as well as those who helped organise, sponsor and run the event.” The festivities were organised by South Holland District Council, sponsored by Spalding firm David Bowman Pumpkins Ltd and supported by the Spalding and Welland Rotary Club and Spalding Lions. Mr Bowman, who is Europe’s largest producer of pumpkins, donated thousands of the fruit to schools and pupils carved and decorated them before taking their creations along. Music lovers were treated to ‘The Courgettes’ who performed a menu of ska, jazz, swing and rock ‘n’ roll. Creative visitors enjoyed craft stalls which gave them a chance to make pumpkin themed artwork. In the evening, there was live entertainment from local artists including Vibe Youth Choir, Bourne borderers and Radius 45. With pumpkins taking centre stage there were also recipes and cooking demos.

Youngsters at a Spalding school are benefitting from new play equipment, bought for them by councillors. The Garth School, a special school with 45 pupils aged between two and 19 from across South Holland, has been boosted by the generous donation which includes scooters, tricycles, wheelbarrows and buggies. Twenty councillors contributed a total of £2,370 from their own budgets and the equipment was handed over to pupils and teachers at a special assembly last week. Pinchbeck and Surfleet councillor Sally

Slade organised the initiative along with Di Sawyer, a member of the Friends of the Garth School group. Cllr Slade said: “It was a pleasure for us to attend a celebration assembly and meet some of the children who are already using and benefitting from the new robust play equipment. “It is wonderful to be able to see how the designated budget money can make such a difference to people’s lives. “The children were all smiles as they showed how they use the toys and we heard how the push along chair has even helped one little girl to start walking.”

Maria wins top prize The latest lucky winner of South Holland District Council’s Green Bag Lottery has been revealed. Maria Silva, of Beech Avenue, Spalding, won the £1,000 top prize and was presented with her cheque this week. The Green Bag Lottery, which has been running since February, promotes good recycling and aims to raise awareness of its importance. Every four weeks, ten households are randomly and secretly selected to take part. Each one that presents recycling correctly for at least three of the four weeks is awarded £100 and they are then placed into a draw to

win £1,000. A delighted Mrs Silva said: “I am over the moon, I really can’t believe I have won. Recycling is so simple to do - it takes little effort but makes such a difference. I try to encourage my children, family and friends to recycle.” Cllr Roger Gambba-Jones, the council’s portfolio holder for waste management, said: “We congratulate Maria and thank everyone who took part in the last round. “The Green Bag Lottery has only been running for seven months but already it is raising awareness of good recycling across the district.”

Poignant street sign returned to family A poignant street sign named after a brave young soldier from Cowbit who was killed in the Second World War has been returned to his family. The Parkin Avenue sign pays tribute to Rfmn Charles Rowland Parkin who died in action at Normandy during the D-Day campaign in July 1944 and includes a poem in his memory. The street in Cowbit was named after him by the old Spalding Rural Council. The name-plate states “Charles Rowland Parkin of this village gave his life in the service of his country” followed by a short piece of poetry: Ye who live on mid-English pastures green, Remember us and think what might have been. On learning that the sign had been removed, the Parkin family contacted Cllr Christine Lawton, portfolio holder for

housing, to see if it could be found. With the help of council staff the sign was duly recovered and returned to Mr Parkin’s brother Les, who is now 84 and lives in Spalding. Les, of Regent’s Street, said: “The sign is a unique piece of history - there can’t be many others like it. “My brother was only 19 when he died but the sign ensures that his memory will live on forever. “I would like to thank Cllr Lawton and staff at South Holland District Council for returning it - they have made my family very happy and proud.” Mr Parkin added that he would place the sign on the side of an air raid shelter in his garden. Cllr Christine Lawton said: “I am delighted that a small piece of social history has been preserved.”

Taxi safety highlighted Members of the public who regularly use taxis and private hire vehicles in South Holland are being asked to check that vehicles they travel in are properly licensed. All licensed vehicles undergo a rigorous annual test which is additional to any standard Mot required. Cllr Malcolm Chandler, portfolio holder for regulatory services, said: “There has been much national publicity in recent weeks about concerns over unlicensed taxis. In

South Holland we are fortunate that we have a generally high standard of licensed drivers and vehicles. “However, we remain committed to ensuring that our taxis are roadworthy and the safety of the public is always our number one priority. We ask the public to be wary of unlicensed vehicles and to report them to us. Unlicensed vehicles and drivers not only present a risk to public safety they also impact upon the legitimate operators”.

Spalding Appoints New Town Centre Manager

New Face in the Family Team at Ringrose Law Ringrose Law is delighted to welcome Emma McGrath, Senior Family Solicitor, to the ever expanding team at the Ringrose Law Spalding Office. Emma, who has many years of experience in family law, particularly specialises in Divorce and Finances, Separation, Children Matters and Family Law matters in general. Emma has worked at local law firms in Spalding & Peterborough over the last eight years, prior to returning to Spalding to head the Family Law team at the Ringrose Law Spalding Office. Emma is looking forward to building up the family law workload at the Spalding office and is particularly hoping to extend her client base and to advise on more financial cases which generally arise upon divorce or separation.

A NEW Spalding Town Centre Manager has been recruited to shape the future of the town and help unite businesses so Spalding can achieve its full potential. Ex-Army Major, Dennis Hannant, has recently completed a 43 year career in the Army and brings many years of military and commercial business experience to the role, which he starts in November. Talking about the new role, Dennis said he understands the challenges facing Spalding town centre, and he is looking forward to working with the town management team and market traders to encourage more footfall into the town. “Spalding has many excellent tourist attractions, and a visit to one of these coupled with a trip into Spalding makes for a great day out. I have no doubt that the job will be challenging, but there is so much potential in Spalding, and this is what really attracted me to the job.” “Throughout my military career I have learnt that hard work produces the results, and I’m not afraid of getting my hands dirty. On my trips to Spalding I’ve been really impressed by the look of the town and the variety of retail stores on offer. I was equally impressed by the dedication and professionalism of the traders who have worked so hard already to improve and promote the town.”

Dennis was awarded the MBE in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours for his work with the Army Reserves and with military and civilian charities. Talking about the interview panel’s decision to appoint Dennis, Phil Scarlett, President of the Spalding and District Area Chamber of Commerce, said: “From the beginning Dennis demonstrated a good understanding of the town and the challenges we face. His priority initially will be to ‘walk and talk’ around the town to meet businesses and shoppers so that he can better understand the challenges and the opportunities that exist to improve the town centre.”

Minister of State for Skills and Equalities, Nick Boles, Visits New College Stamford Nick Boles MP, Minister of State for Skills and Equalities, and Conservative MP for Grantham and Stamford has visited New College Stamford and met with staff and students. Mr Boles said, “My visit gave me the

chance to see the brilliant opportunities provided by our local high achieving College. It was great to see New College Stamford is committed to developing the skills and knowledge required for economic stability, both locally and

regionally. I was impressed by, and fully support New College Stamford’s strategic plans to engage with employers to develop apprenticeships and employability skills for its students. It’s a fantastic asset to the area.”

New Resource Helps Lincolnshire Sing! A new mapping resource goes live on the soundLINCS website this week to help people find community choral groups in their area and to get Lincolnshire singing! Lincolnshire Sings is a mapping tool which displays choral groups across the county, allowing you to filter and search for a group relevant to you and to discover more information about them; including their contact details and rehearsal time and venue. The resource was put together by soundLINCS, working with the Lincolnshire Music and Arts Education Hub and Lincolnshire Music service, following a lengthy consultation period and a concentrated

press and publicity campaign. The project received over 100 responses from all corners of the county, covering a diverse range of singing opportunities in Lincolnshire, from rock choirs to barbershop quartets, sea shanties to Gilbert and Sullivan. Allison Jackson, Programme Development Manager at soundLINCS, commented: “Lincolnshire Sings will be a one stop shop for aspiring singers or teachers wanting to find groups close to them that they can get involved with. We hope it will encourage and enable young people and adults who love to sing the opportunity to easily find out how & where to go to join others with a passion for singing!” The map can be viewed on the soundLINCS website at http:// www.soundlincs.org/lincolnshire-sings-mapping/. If you know of any other singing or vocal groups in your area not on this map please get in touch with soundLINCS at info@soundlincs.org or by calling us on 01522 510073 and we will happily include them. Lincolnshire Sings is part of our National Foundation for Youth Music’s Network Programme, EMTaP – East Midlands Talent & Potential, which is heavily subsidised by the National Foundation for Youth Music with additional support from each of the Music Education Hubs in the East Midlands region. At South Holland District Council I have recently taken on Economic Development as part of my portfolio and am looking at ways of attracting new businesses to the area and retaining and growing our existing businesses. We are traditionally an agricultural, horticultural and food based economy, with many tens of thousands of people employed in growing, harvesting, processing and transporting (importing and exporting) food and flowers throughout the UK, Europe and indeed worldwide. There is a mass of industry off the back of this including traditional business such accountants, banks, lawyers and insurance companies, but also less well known businesses such as pest control, hygiene, security, the hospitality industry, health and safety specialists and specialist engineering firms as well as the allimportant information technology sector, the latter two of which are at the forefront of an ever developing and higher skilled industry. The District and County Council and its partners have a major role to play in all of the above through Housing, Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Planning, Highways, Economic and Community Development, as all these people need houses to live in, better road infrastructure, medical facilities to meet an ever increasing demand, schooling for their children and for the family, cultural activities, whether that be going to the cinema, eating out, listening to music or taking part in art or sports. This all requires funding, whether directly through you the tax payer, through planning agreements, grant funding from the European Union or through the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, the latter of which draws down substantial government funding into the County that is matched by the

private sector. Over the coming few months I, along with our new Chief Executive of South Holland District Council, will be meeting with local businesses to let them know that we are “Open for Business”. The aim of this initiative is to remove the barriers that prevent businesses from growing and expanding, allowing them to be innovative without weighing them down in bureaucracy and to attract new businesses to the area. Rather than tell businesses what we want to do I want to hear what they want to achieve and what we are doing that is stopping them from achieving their aims. To be truly Open for Business, we need to be open to new ideas and ways of working and I look forward over the coming months to hear from businesses how we can achieve that goal. Although Local Councils are under increasing financial pressure with greatly reduced funding from central government putting pressure on services, there is money to be had from a range of other sources. The Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership is key to this with many millions of pounds for better infrastructure, to kickstart the construction industry and for small and medium size businesses. It is my aim to ensure we get our fair share of this in the future but I want to hear from businesses what they want and not what we think they need! If you would like to know more about our initiative “Open for Business” please do contact me or the economic development team at South Holland District Council and we will be in touch. For more information on the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership see their website at: www.greaterlincolnshirelep.co.uk

School news

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Weston Hills CofE Primary We had several new members of staff start with us in September, our new head teacher, Mrs. Jane Fitzgerald, along with two new teachers, Mrs. Helen Barnes and Mrs. Penny Farrell. Mrs. Haines and Mrs. Cansick have joined us as lunchtime supervisors, and Mrs. Twiddy has joined as cleaner. Our 20 new Reception children and other new starters have all settled in really well. It seems as if they have always been here! We hope their stay at Weston Hills will be a happy and wonderful learning experience for them all. Parent meetings have taken place for all classes. Our Year 6 children who opted to take part in the 11+ examinations for a selective place at secondary school have now completed both parts and are waiting for their results.

Our annual residential visit to Aylmerton Field Study Centre in Norfolk took place at the beginning of September. 21 Year 5 & 6 children had a fantastic week of beach walking, swimming and other educational activities. Class 4 children are booked to go on a trip to the Space Centre in Leicester this term. It should be an educational and exciting day! Our extra-curricular activities this term include a Tag Rugby, Football, Taiko, Change4Life Club & Choir.

Wisbech Grammar School Young mathematicians at Wisbech Grammar School have solved a series of mind-teasing puzzles to win a clutch of awards in a national contest. In the junior maths challenge organized by Leeds University for students in years six, seven and eight, pupils from the senior school and the preparatory school, Magdalene House, won high scores, achieving three gold, four silver and ten bronze certificates after answering 25 questions testing their ability in a variety of ways. The best in school award went to year eight pupil Sam Martin (13), from Wisbech, and Ursula France (11), who lives in Hunstanton, obtained the best result in year seven. There was also a strong performance by Shravan Sharma (11), in his final year at Magdalene House. Head of maths Mr Geoff Howes said: “These pupils practise many questions as they strive for an award and in doing so they develop a real love for the subject. This competition is excellent at extending and enthusing those pupils who are talented mathematicians.” 12 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

St John the Baptist CofE Primary School Children have returned to school after their summer break ready and raring to go! Although school has been closed for learning over the summer it has in no way been a quiet place! There has been lots of refurbishment taking place resulting in two of our oldest classrooms receiving a beautiful makeover, creating an even better environment for children to learn in. Our holiday club was also thriving with children coming to be looked after during the holiday period. They had loads of fun everyday – but especially on themed days such as Seaside week, Pirate week, Carnival week, Superhero week and Sports week. Special days saw them in fancy dress, learning Circus Skills and Multi Skills Sports Days. So, we are ready to start a new term with lots of exciting learning planned throughout the coming months. Look out in Simply Spalding for our updates on what we have been up to!

Advice

Renting a home

W

❱ BY LISA BARWELL hen you are renting a home it is important for you to know what you can afford and understand the kind of rental agreement you are

entering into. If you’re thinking about renting a home privately, you might be interested in first looking at some new measures that have been introduced to help tenants. How to rent – The checklist for renting in England summarises things that assured shorthold tenants need to look out for and what you can expect from a tenancy. It can be found at www.gov.uk. The government has also produced a new model tenancy agreement. It is for assured shorthold tenancies, which are very common in private rented accommodation. It may be of particular use if you’d like to negotiate a longer tenancy of two years or more with a private landlord. Landlords can choose whether or not to use the model agreement, but it is available at no cost and it comes with accompanying guidance. Both are available on the GOV.UK website at www.gov.uk. A new code of practice has also been produced for landlords and agents in the private rented sector. It sets out their legal requirements.

Looking for accommodation If you are looking for accommodation, you might find it useful to collect:• lists of hostels, bed and breakfast hotels and emergency accommodation • lists of accommodation agencies • contact details for social housing landlords such as housing associations • advice on approaching the local authority as a homeless person • the addresses of refuges for women in

violent relationships • information on local housing available for people with special needs. The Homeless UK website has information about services for homeless people, including hostels, day centres and other advice and support services. Go to www.homelessuk.org. If you are looking for accommodation, you may be able to get this sort of help from a local authority housing advice centre. You can find the address of your nearest centre in the local telephone directory.

Accessible Housing Registers In some parts of England and Wales there are Accessible Housing Registers. If you need specially adapted accommodation, for example because you are disabled or elderly or have a disabled child, you can apply to have your details entered on to one or more Accessible Housing Registers. If you put your details on the Accessible Housing Register, this can help to match together people and suitable homes. You don’t have to live in the area you want to register in, so you can register in an area that you want to move to. You can also register in more than one area. You can apply to be on the Accessible Housing Register if you own your own home. You can find more information about Accessible Housing Registers and the areas they cover, including the areas in England, on the Disability Wales website at www. disabilitywales.org.

Help for homeless people Local authorities have a legal duty to provide help to certain people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. The local authority will look at a number of things to decide if you qualify for help.

“If you put your details on the Accessible Housing Register, this can help to match together people and suitable homes.” These include: • you are eligible for assistance • you are homeless or threatened with homelessness • you have a priority need for housing (this test was abolished in Scotland on 31 December 2012) • you are not intentionally homeless • you have a local connection. Generally, the more of these stages you get through, the more the local authority will have to do to help you. Local social services authorities also have responsibility for some homeless people. They have a duty to provide accommodation for children and young people over 16 who are leaving care, or who are in need for other reasons. If you are threatened with homelessness please do not delay in seeking advice.

Advice for staying safe on Halloween & Bonfire Night Jim Tyner

Autumn is now upon us and the Neighbourhood Policing Teams are preparing their patrols for the upcoming Halloween and Bonfire Night festivities

Community Policing Inspector

❱ BY SGT SHARON HALL

“The Neighbourhood Policing Teams won’t be out on patrol on broomsticks but they will be out on foot, on cycles and in cars.”

T

he Neighbourhood Policing Teams have been working with schools across South Holland to give advice with regards to having a safe Halloween and Bonfire Night. We are again working with local shops to crack down on anti-social behaviour and disorder by asking them not to sell flour and eggs to people under the age of 18 during Halloween, along with the sale of fireworks (unless accompanied by an adult). With it comes to Halloween, my advice is that when children come “trick or treating”, they should be accompanied by their parents, stay within their neighbourhood and only go to the houses of people they know and which are clearly taking part themselves in the Halloween festivities. Please be aware that not everybody in the community wishes to participate in “trick or treating” and that some people, particularly the vulnerable, can find it intimidating and distressing. When it comes to the trick part of “trick or treating”, there are no exemptions for this under the Criminal Damage Act, Public Order Act, or any Anti-Social Behaviour legislation. Historically, we see an increase in these crimes during Halloween and Bonfire Night, so if we have to deal with any of these, the penalty will not be a treat so please act responsibly. There is a “No trick or treat” poster available for any member of the community who does not want people to knock on their door. These are available from Spalding

and Holbeach Police Stations as well as the main South Holland District Council building or they can be downloaded from our website – www.lincs.police.uk. This year marks the 409th anniversary of the attempt on the life of King James I which led to the celebration which continues to follow today. As early as 1605 bonfires were allowed to celebrate the saving of the king’s life so long as they were “without any danger or disorder”. Whilst we are all keen to celebrate this significant anniversary, we would urge that any such celebrations are conducted in the same spirit as the original ones in 1605. There is an increased demand on all of the emergency services at this time of the year as a result of firework and bonfire related incidents. The Neighbourhood Policing Teams have produced a quick poster guide to the more commonly enforced Fireworks legislation (designed to reduce the incidence of anti-social behaviour and accidents), which again can be obtained from Spalding and Holbeach Police Stations. Perhaps rather than organising your own display in your back garden where you may cause distress to your neighbours and their pets, why not attend one of the excellent organised displays that we have in South Holland. The Neighbourhood Policing Teams won’t be out on patrol on broomsticks but they will be out on foot, on cycles and in cars. They will also be tweeting advice and information about Halloween and Bonfire Night before and during the event to reassure the community.

What’s on During November at Spalding Library

Awful Auntie

King Henry VIII is slowly, painfully dying. His Protestant and Catholic councillors are engaged in a final and decisive power struggle; whoever wins will control the government of Henry’s successor, eight-year-old Prince Edward. As heretics are hunted across London, and the radical Protestant Anne Askew is burned at the stake, the Catholic party focus their attack on Henry’s sixth wife, Matthew Shardlake’s old mentor, Queen Catherine Parr. Shardlake, still haunted by events aboard the warship Mary Rose the year before, is working on the Cotterstoke Will case, a savage dispute between rival siblings. Then, unexpectedly, he is summoned to Whitehall Palace and asked for help by his old patron, the now beleaguered and desperate Queen.

The screechingly funny new novel from the Number One bestselling author. A page-turning, rollicking romp of a read, sparkling with Walliams’ most eccentric characters yet and full of humour and heart. From larger than life, tiddlywinks obsessed Awful Aunt Alberta to her pet owl, Wagner - this is an adventure with a difference. Aunt Alberta is on a mission to cheat the young Lady Stella Saxby out of her inheritance - Saxby Hall. But with mischievous and irrepressible Soot, the cockney ghost of a chimney sweep, alongside her Stella is determined to fight back... And sometimes a special friend, however different, is all you need to win through.

Sixth Form

Choosing the right 6th Form Plan ahead to get it right

I

f you are in your GCSE year then you soon have to give some serious consideration to your future. What next? If you are looking to do A Levels then you need to consider not only what you want to study but also where. Your choices are influenced by many factors such as which institutions offer the subjects you are looking at and what your chosen career path is.

Choosing Subjects If you know what you would like to study at University then that will largely dictate the subjects you choose. Make sure you do your research – know exactly which subjects and grades your preferred universities require as it would be an absolute disaster to start your A Levels only to realise that they are not compatible with your university choices. There is more work involved with A Level study than there is at GCSE level so make sure you really enjoy the subjects you choose as you’re going to be studying them in depth. If you are not sure what you would like to study at University then there are certain A Levels which will give you a broader selection of course options when you do come to decide. These include the sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), English, Maths, History, Geography and Languages (both modern and classical). These are especially important if you are looking at a member of the Russell Group of universities. Conversely, taking subjects such as Dance will not

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

be weighted as highly as those above (unless, of course you are looking to study Dance!).

Choosing a 6th Form Your school might have a 6th Form attached to it but you are not obliged to choose it. You will be spending 2 years in 6th Form so it has to be right for you. Many 6th Forms hold open days and evenings which you can attend to get more information and, most importantly, a feel for the school and the staff. You may want to be with your friends, or had recommendations from your parents and teachers but remember that it has to be right for you so listen to the advice given but remember that you don’t have to follow it. An open day is your best opportunity to experience for yourself what life in 6th Form is like as well as the chance to take part in some sample lessons. You will also find out what grades you need to achieve at GCSE to be able to study at A Level. Most 6th Forms ask for at least 5 grade A – C passes at GCSE to include English and Maths but often 6th Form centres will have their own requirements when it comes to specific subjects. ä

“An open day is your best opportunity to experience for yourself what life in 6th Form is like as well as the chance to take part in some sample lessons.”

Sixth Form

Choosing the right 6th Form

ä

When you visit an open day or evening you might like to take a list of questions with you. You will be hearing and receiving a lot of information so keeping a list handy of the questions that are most important to you will ensure that you don’t forget to ask anything. Talk to members of the current sixth form about their experiences (make sure you ask for the bad as well as the good) and be sure to see the facilities that aren’t linked directly to learning but are just as important such as the canteen.

“Make sure you do your research - know exactly which subjects and grades your preferred universities require as it would be an absolute disaster to start your A Levels only to realise that they are not compatible with your university choices.”

22 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Questions to ask during your visit: What entry qualifications will I need? How many A Levels will I be expected to study? What have previous results been? Is there a catchment area? Can you meet the tutors / head of 6th Form? How will your parents be contacted? What clubs and societies are available to join? Is there any opportunity for sport? Is there a uniform or dress code? What are the facilities (eg canteen, study areas) like? Can you speak to current students about their experiences? What is the most studied subject? Do they have recommended subject combinations? What do students go on to do after their A Levels? If you don’t get your predicted grades what options are available to you from your 6th Form of choice? When is the application deadline/ What is the best way to apply?

One of the most popular treatments at the moment is HD Brows, a seven-step eyebrow shaping treatment that focuses on design. It involves a combination of techniques, including tinting, waxing and threading, using specialist HD Brows products. There are also a full range of products you can purchase to enhance your brows in between visits. On average you will need to have this done every 4-6 weeks depending on how quickly you hair grows and how well your hair holds colour. Even over plucked brows can have HD. Brow shapes are tailored to the individual as they have to suit your look and personality. Your brows can be made dark or light, thick or thin, sharp or soft. Our eyebrows are a vital part of your personality. Not only do they frame your face, over 70% of your facial expressions depend on them! And that’s why the right brow shape and colour can take years off you. To complement the HD Brows our most recent addition to the therapy menu is eyelash extensions. Like brows, they can make a huge difference to your appearance. We apply individual lashes rather than strips or clusters for a natural look which still has the wow factor! With the colder months meaning less sun a fake tan is a great way to maintain a healthy year-round glow without having to resort to using a sun bed. There are many benefits to using Fake Bake: It gives longer lasting (up to 50% longer than self-tans), more natural-looking results. It is made from the finest naturally derived ingredients and has a pleasant fragrance which is great news – no more strong smells associated with many other self-tanning products. Fake Bake has a variety of skin care benefits ranging from anti-ageing to antioxidant protection. It is also good to know that Fake Bake products are not tested on animals and are free from parabens. Finally, complete your party look with a set of Shellac nails. Unlike acrylic or nails, Shellac is a nail polish that hardens over natural nails; the only difference between it and regular nail polish is that it is much harder and durable. A single nail treatment can last up to a month without chips, breaks or the need for extra coats. Because Shellac is set by a UV light instead of air like regular nail polish, it is completely dry by the end of the appointment, unlike regular polish takes a few hours to completely set. So if you are ready to glam up for the festive season then get in touch on 07803 830524 or by emailing beautybybecki@gmail.com We can also be found on Facebook, search for beautybybecki. Refer a friend and loyalty offers are also available.

Keep warm in winter

With the weather now turning cold, what can you do to make sure you stay warm this winter? ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Boiler Servicing: We rely on our boiler to provide hot water and central heating and so it is worth taking the time to look after it. Much like a car or something smaller like a petrol lawnmower, if your boiler is serviced regularly it will perform better in the long run any problem can be detected before it becomes serious and potentially lead to further damage. Also, regular servicing ensures that your boiler is working efficiently which will ensure that it doesn’t use more power than it needs to, keeping your bills to a minimum. Servicing only needs to be done annually and isn’t usually a long job, but make sure you use a qualified engineer. Many companies offer boiler cover which is paid in small monthly amounts giving you peace of mind that not only will you get a service every year but if something does go wrong you are able to get an engineer out quickly so you are not left without heating or hot water.

Chimneys: If you have an open fire then it is important to get your chimney swept every year. It is important for your safety first and foremost but also should the worst happen and you have a chimney fire, you will need to prove that you have taken good care of your chimney to avoid a charge from the fire service and your insurer refusing to pay out. Sweeping your chimney will rid it of soot, bird nests, cobwebs, general blockages and creosote which is highly flammable. It will also ensure that dangerous gases are able to escape and not come back into the room and cause danger to you. If you need to find a chimney sweep then start with the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS). You can find them online at www.nacs.org.uk where you can also download a free guide to heating your home safely.

“...should the worst happen and you have a chimney fire, you will need to prove that you have taken good care of your chimney...” Energy Bills: It is worth putting in a call to your energy supplier to check that you are on the best tariff based on your usage. If you feel that you are not getting the best deal then it is worth shopping around. Make sure you have your latest bills to hand and you can either call the companies or go online and use a comparison website which is much faster. If you have roof space which faces south you could consider solar panels – provided your roof qualifies there are schemes which provide solar panels for free and you can take advantage of the free electricity they generate, bringing down your bills in the process.

Finally: If you know of someone who is elderly or vulnerable who looks like they are not coping with the cold weather then let them know about the Priority Service Register – this is a scheme which offers free services to people who are of pensionable age, are registered disabled, have a hearing or visual impairment or have long term ill health. Services include help with your meter, free advice and information and help arranging your bills.

Insulation: Insulating and draught proofing your home is an important way of keeping your heating bills down over the colder months. For loft and cavity wall insulation there are grants available so it is worth doing a little research before you book someone to do it as you may not need to pay anything at all. As well as the loft and the walls it is wise to ensure that your water pipes are insulated, both indoors and out. Once it begins to get dark make sure you close your curtains to keep the heat in and any draughts out. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Focus on The Crescent

The Crescent A celebration of independent businesses

H

ave a walk down The Crescent and from top to bottom you will find all manner of independent traders. We have talked a lot in Simply Spalding over recent months about buying your food from locally produced sources but what about when you are doing your shopping? Is it just as important to support these businesses? In short, the answer is yes. As well as benefits for them the benefits end up coming back to you in direct and indirect ways so everyone wins. Buying from independent traders helps keep the local economy buoyant. By buying through an independent trader the money you give to them is more likely to stay local which is good news for the area. Having a wide variety of independent stores not only gives you more choice when buying but it helps to keep the town unique. It adds to the character of the town and this in turn can help tourism – people do not visit historic towns such as ours to see the large multi-national firms that have been attracted here. By and large you can expect a better level of service from independent stores. Local firms know and understand their customer base very well and they also have a deeper knowledge of their products which puts them in a good position to advise you should you have any questions or need help deciding what to buy.

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Use it or lose it! It sounds a bit blunt but smaller companies rely on your custom to survive. If you enjoy the difference they bring to the town then buy their products and use their services where you can. Don’t assume that because they are independent they are more expensive – often overheads are lower which makes them competitive with other stores in the area. Unless you go in and take a look around you won’t know! The Crescent boasts a large range of shops from health and beauty to kitchen designs, restaurants and bookshops so it well worth heading round the corner from the main high street to see what this street has to offer.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Pets Corner

Winter Warnings -

Keep Your Pets Warm & Safe It’s cold and wet outside - winter is definitely here. Before you head out into the cold, remember that your pets are feeling the chill too, especially the youngsters and golden-oldies. Here are some tips to keep them comfortable and safe this winter Put On A Coat! Most dogs, especially those with short or thin fur, benefit from wearing a coat. They keep the warmth in and the rain out. If you are a keen nature walker, you’ll already know that your dog’s underbelly gets muddy and drenched, and it’s much easier to wash and dry a coat than it is a dog! If you have outdoor pets, such as rabbits, wrap an old duvet around their hutch during icy weather, and ensure there is plenty of warm, clean bedding available. Defrost all water-feeders when they ice over too, this can be twice a day in very cold conditions. Snow and Frozen Lakes Dogs love to eat snow, but try to limit their intake, as the extreme cold can cause vomiting. Cats generally don’t like snow and won’t venture out, but on cold, icy nights try to keep them inside. A frosty 11pm is different to a freezing 4am! Buy a litter tray if

necessary. It goes without saying, but when you are out walking don’t let your dogs walk across ice. It may look scenic, but it is dangerous. If the ice breaks and your dog falls through, you are likely to risk your own life trying to save them. Keep dogs on leads when you’re near bodies of water during winter, it’s just not worth the risk. Salt And Grit Salt and grit are features of our roads during the winter. Grit can get caught between paw-pads, and they can receive nasty wounds from sharp-edged grit too. Look out for excessive pad-licking and feel between toes. Salt is poisonous in large quantities, so wipe your cat’s feet regularly, and avoid walking your dog over salt. Anti-freeze Poison Sadly, every year cats and dogs die from ingesting sweet-tasting anti-freeze. Symptoms of poisoning are panting, hunching over, collapse and eventually death. Keep all anti-freeze locked away and be careful where you spray it, especially around your pet’s walkways because they will lick their feet. Be sure to avoid ponds and birdbaths too.

Just One Last Thing... When temperatures drop, don’t forget about our native wildlife. Hedgehogs that have failed to hibernate will eat cat-food, and birds will flock to nuts, seeds and fat-balls. A clean birdbath or bowl of water can be a lifesaver in the winter months too. Our native wildlife needs all the help it can get! Keep warm. And be safe!

Fireworks

Helping your pets during Fireworks Bonfire Night is an exciting time, going to bonfire parties, eating toffee apples and, of course, watching spectacular firework displays. But what about our pets and how do we keep them calm?

F

“If you have a cat flap which locks then make sure it is locked for the duration of the evening.”

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

or many pet owners, bonfire night can become a night full of dread (and the evenings either side of it) because of the effect it has on their animals. Dogs, cats and smaller animals such as rabbits are unable to understand fireworks and so know there is nothing to be afraid of but there are things we can do to make the evening easier. Most dogs and cats that are afraid of the loud sounds they are hearing will instinctively run and hide. Where you can, let them do it as it helps them feel less afraid. If there is nowhere to hide you might like to consider creating somewhere your pet can hide. If your pet does hide then leave them there until they feel safe enough to come out, it is not helpful to your pet to try and remove them from a place they feel safe as it will increase their fear again. If you have a pet which scares particularly easily it might be worth a trip to the vets before bonfire night. Most vets stock pheromone plugs which release calming scents which dogs and cats are able to smell but humans can’t. In extreme cases a vet can prescribe medication which will help your pet remain calm or recommend you take your pet to a behavioural therapist who will use various techniques to desensitise animals to their phobias. Also, while you are at the vets make sure your pet is microchipped so that if it does get scared and the worst happens and it runs away then it can be reunited with you easily when it is found. If your pet is already microchipped make sure that all your details are up to date – if you have moved house, for example, then your address details will need to be changed. On bonfire night itself, make sure you draw the curtains and

“In extreme cases a vet can prescribe medication which will help your pet remain calm or recommend you take your pet to a behavioural therapist who will use various techniques to desensitise animals to their phobias.” close doors and windows when it starts to get dark. If you have a cat flap which locks then make sure it is locked for the duration of the evening. An easy thing you can do to help your pets is to put on the television or play background music to distract from the sounds outside. If you keep small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs it is a good idea to bring their hutches inside for the night if you are able. If this is not possible then make sure they have plenty of bedding and consider covering the hutch with a blanket for the night to help reduce the brightness and loudness of the fireworks. If you have a puppy or you find that on bonfire night your dog or cat starts displaying fear for the first time then there are plenty of online resources that will help you to identify the behaviour and give hints and tips on first time fear. SIMPLY PROPERTY

g n i t a r b e l e C is Twelve months ago SIMPLY PROPERTY opened its doors to the property market in South Holland and the company has been going from strength to strength ever since. Like most businesses first year there have been ups and downs and lessons learned along the way. Managing director, Hayley Hammond comments: “I am very fortunate to have already set up a company 7 years ago to produce Simply Magazines and therefore have the infrastructure in place for running a business, however SIMPLY PROPERTY has been a real challenge for me, something which I relish. Keeping a business going for the first 12 months really is a battle and only the fittest survive and come out the other side. I am pleased to say with the support of fantastic clients we are in a strong position moving into our second year.” Undoubtedly the key to SIMPLY PROPERTY’s success has been customer service and offering something different to high street agents. According to a recent survey of clients who have sold their home through SIMPLY PROPERTY 100% of respondents said they would recommend them to a friend or relative – not bad for such a new company!

“I think the best thing about

SIMPLY PROPERTY

was the personal touch - down to collecting keys and delivering a new home card. Thank you.” Mrs Dawson

The aim of the estate agency at launch was to offer something different to other agencies, as well as pass on savings on to you which are made by not having a shop front and utilising Simply Magazines for promotion of properties for sale. This has all been achieved and vendors are very positive about their properties being seen in Simply Magazines as they reach more homes than any other publication, you are guaranteed your property will be in every issue and a glossy magazine is read and retained – meaning properties are more likely to be seen and viewings booked. With the way we consume information changing rapidly the internet is the place where the vast majority of house sales and purchases now begin – SIMPLY PROPERTY is at the forefront of online advertising by utilising the many tools available to market your property to potential purchasers. Utilising their knowledge from Simply Magazines they are able to put you in contact with reliable local businesses.

So who is Hayley Hammond? Managing Director Hayley Hammond is no stranger to the property market and her experiences are the reason that SIMPLY PROPERTY had the edge. She explains: “My keen interest in property started almost 10 years ago when I worked on several well-known brands whilst living in London – Property Ladder, Location, Location, Location & A Place in the Sun and has kept on growing ever since. Working across the Channel 4 brands gave me lots of insider tips on how the ‘cream of the property crop’ made their money in property. I saw the joy it brings when you find someone their new home or by selling a property for a vendor, the happiness they have at moving on to a new stage in their life. “Since leaving home in 2000 I have been

through many house moves both rental and purchasing, 2 relocations as well as turning one property into a buy to let. Therefore, through personal experience I am able to assist house sellers and purchasers in what can be one of the most stressful times of their lives. Add to this 12 months of ‘on the job’ training which has been the biggest learning curve for me, I am armed and ready for the next sale! “I am not embarrassed to say I am a bargain hunter at heart and always looking at ways to save money as well as spotting where there’s a great deal to be taken advantage of – all tips I love to share with our clients. Why pay more than you have to for goods or services? “At SIMPLY PROPERTY we aim to offer a cut above the rest in terms of our service to customers and will always go that extra mile to achieve for vendors their house sale and at the same time moving purchasers into their dream home. “Through 15 years of employment in publishing houses and more recently launching Simply Magazines I am able to utilise my skills in marketing to ensure we advertise and promote every property to give maximum exposure and more importantly that will deliver quicker and better sales for our vendors”.

Spalding Luxury Kitchens Located on Vine Street, Spalding Luxury Kitchens is owned by professional kitchen designer James Parker

H

aving identified a need in the area for high quality kitchens at realistic prices he moved his business to the area. He is rightfully proud of the product he offers, German manufactured Ballerina kitchens which are an up to date, modern product with contemporary and traditional finishes. For James, quality is at the top of his list: “Ballerina kitchens come fully built, they are delivered as a rigid carcass straight from the factory no there is no assembly needed. It means it is very sturdy and durable.” He is also keen to point out that, with something as important as a kitchen which can often be the focal point of a home, you need to use a professional kitchen designer to get the most out of your space: “Each project requires a specialist touch so don’t leave it to a big superstore where they may have had the basic training but it’s not what they do for a living so how can they give you the perfect kitchen? Quite simply, they can’t. We offer a free professional design and quotation service, so you can see the quality for yourself as well as the sheer range we have on offer.” There are other benefits to using an industry expert, Spalding Luxury Kitchens are able to help with all enquiries, from the smallest alteration to a complete renovation. They have been involved with projects that needed a simple change of one appliance

right through to jobs which required full planning permission and building regulation approval. James only uses local specialist craftsmen so you are assured the job will be done to the highest specification. Once you have chosen your carcass the fun really begins as Spalding Luxury Kitchens offer you a huge choice of worktops, tiles, doors and handles. They are especially proud of their worktop range offering the best quality laminates, acrylic, glass, solid stone and precast concrete. They even have new lines of ecofriendly worktops and doors which are as durable and attractive as their traditional counterparts. They are a CDA appliance master partner, offering a wide range of appliances however they are happy to work to your specification and can source any appliance brand on the market. Once you’ve agreed on your appliances you will find a choice of iglass splash backs to choose from to complete the look. Finishing with your sink and taps, Spalding Luxury Kitchens are Astracast Sink Main Dealers, ensuring that the high quality runs throughout. But with the highest quality doesn’t come an enormous price tag. James is always happy to discuss how competitively priced his kitchens are the free design and quotation service will demonstrate this. Lead times are also short with around a 4 week order time and then once a date has been agreed, installation usually takes just 2 days.

Christmas

Christmas

S

Planning the Party! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

o Christmas is around the corner and everyone in the office has decided that a Christmas party within the next few weeks is the order of the day. And as you are the most organised out of the lot of you would it be OK if you were left in charge of making sure the Christmas party is the best ever and is talked about for years to come? Of course you’ve agreed, you are lucky in that the area has lots to offer by way of Christmas parties. After a year of hard work in the office, a Christmas party is a great way to get together socially before the Christmas break. As well as celebrating with those who you are closest with it is also a great opportunity to get to know people outside of work who you wouldn’t normally see day to day. For some added fun why not organise a Secret Santa – everyone picks a name secretly from a hat and spends a small amount on a gift for that person. Gifts are then pooled together so the person receiving the gift doesn’t know who it is from. Gifts can range from food to bath gifts and joke presents. But before you see to the finer details there are bigger decisions to be made! One of the most important things you can do is to make sure you book as early as you can once you have decided what you are doing. The best venues tend to book up very quickly and you don’t want to find yourself having to hold the party in the office as everywhere was full! Start by taking a look at everyone who is going to attend the party – what sort of thing do they like to do on a regular office night out?

What are they going to be like regarding family commitments and how far are they going to have to travel? Consider sending round an email asking everyone what they would like to do and go with the majority – remember that it is impossible to please everyone! If there is travelling involved you might like to look into booking taxis in advance (this can be cheaper for large groups) or even hiring a minibus. This way your colleagues don’t need to draw lots to see who has to drive! So on to the choices available to you and your colleagues. Christmas parties take many forms, from drinks at the pub after work to a Christmas meal at a restaurant to an evening of bowling. How about ice-skating or a team game like Laser Storm? For those with a competitive streak how about Go Karting? Or something more traditional such as an outing to the local pantomime with a night out on the town to follow? If you like to celebrate with lots of people then there are some larger venues which provide party nights with food and a disco. Whatever you book make sure the venue confirms your booking on the email and be clear with everyone in the office about when deposits need to be taken and when the full balance will be due. Once everything is booked and monies paid, check with your venue if there is anything you need to do as you might like to add some final touches such as table decorations. When the party starts try and enjoy it, just because you have organised it doesn’t mean you have to be on call all night! Make sure at the end of the party that everything is paid for and everyone knows how they are getting home! And finally, if the party is mid-week make sure you know how to handle any potential hangovers the following day!

Peugeot RCZ GT HDi 163 ‘GT’ STEMS from the Italian phrase gran turismo which pays homage to the custom of the grand tour. In other words the GT badge is meant to represent cars that are able to make fast, long-distance journeys in both comfort and style

I

am not quite sure the Peugeot RCZ HDi is my idea of a grand tourer. I guess that’s because I’m being snobbish. My image of a GT is an Aston Martin Vantage or a Maserati GranTurismo. But in its favour, the Pug is a tiny proportion of the cost of these cars and it does have the traditional GT two-door coupé with a two in the front, two in the back seating arrangement. Grand tourers differ from typical two-seater sports cars in a few ways: they are typically engineered bigger, and emphasis is often put on luxury rather than unadulterated performance. The RCZ GT HDi 163 has some of these points but the diesel engine is the irregularity. Or is it? Porsche unveiled its big GT – the Panamera Diesel in 2011 and, predictably, it’s the most economical Porsche in the entire vehicle range. So even though an oil-burner lump never seems right in a GT, it does actually make sense if you’re planning lots of miles. This is where the head starts ruling the heart rather than the other way around. With that in mind, the Peugeot RCZ GT begins to look like quite a good compromise. For a start, it’s a

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY looker, especially after its January 2013 face-lift. It also drives well. Its low body and stiff suspension mean it hunkers down through the bends and it will hit 0-62 in 8.7 seconds, spinning up to 137mph on the straights. Okay, the rigidity of the car does make travelling over pothole-ridden roads rather a filling loosening experience, but comfort is assured for the most part. On top of this, the motor returns over 50mpg. That’s what you need if frequently filling up at the pumps isn’t your idea of fun on a European road trip. The athletic Peugeot costs £26,350 if you’re determined to buy new. For your money you get beefy 19 inch alloy wheels and an interior sports kit, complete with a flat-bottomed steering wheel and eye-catching leather seats. The manual six speed gearshift action is precise but the steering column, although adjustable for reach and rake, protrudes too much for my liking. The cabin of the RCZ is a pleasant place to be for you and your front seat travelling companion. However, as with all 2+2’s, you’re only going to get the extremely vertically-challenged or, more likely, a pair of toddlers in the rear seats. The boot is a different story; it’s gigantic and substantial enough to take two full sized suitcases and maybe a couple of golf bags. Again, another reason to go for an RCZ if motoring holidays are your thing. If diesel-power still doesn’t float your boat but the rest of the RCZ package does, then there are a couple of petrol versions available – a 1.6 in 154bhp and 197bhp states of tune. But if I were you, and if you really are petrol purist, then go for Peugeot’s most rampant RCZ yet – the 260bhp RCZ R. It was launched at the end of 2013 – and delivers thrills and spills like no Pug has done before.

Kinesonic Location: South Holland Centre Time: 7pm At the heart of every piece of music there is a machine that keeps each tune alive. If that machine stops the music is lost forever. In this odd world, and under the bumbling leadership of Victor the Victorian, an unlikely team of workers attempt to restart their ramshackle musical engine. A musical machine fuelled by imagination, discovery and play. Vagabond’s Hat blend the heart stopping beauty and thrill of circus skills with slapstick comedy and innovative music making, to weave together an uplifting steampunk fairytale for all ages. Running time 1 hour no interval, plus post-show Q&A
