Welcome to the November issue

contents

Last month I started my welcome talking of crisp, sun filled days but to be honest October has been anything but! I had been organised and swapped all our summer clothes for winter ones, packed the flip flops and suncream away but in reality had to drag some of it back out as the beginning of the month can only be described as an Indian summer…does this mean we are in for another harsh winter. To be honest, I hope so! This month we have enjoyed lots of family adventures, I celebrated my birthday with a trip to Thomas Land! Not quite sure what Hayley of 5 years ago would think to that, but we had a great day, if you’ve got a train fan then I’d definitely recommend the trip. We went to the New Theatre, Lincoln and watched Bing Live! which was my sons first visit to the theatre. He has also started football classes and my daughter is signed up for baby ballet. November is going to seem a bit boring. Enough about us, back to the issue. As the nights will be drawing in once the clocks go back we look at home security, there’s also tips on safer driving through the winter months with some basic motor checks. Otis is exploring Gosberton this month and Tim is test driving the new SsangYong Musso. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and your month!

Local opticians Molsom & Associates celebrate winning at the National Sight Care Awards 2018. In August, Molsom & Associates found out that they had been shortlisted for the inaugural National SightCare Awards 2018 “Moment Of The Year”. The nomination recognised the outstanding contribution Molsom & Associates have made to the local community and their clinical excellence in delivering first class eyecare and customer service. After optometrist Ian Price recognised a life threatening eye condition, the efforts Molsom & Associates made to help raise awareness of the condition and the national patient support charity, OcuMel UK, were enough to secure being shortlisted. Six of the team from Molsom & Associates attended the Sight Care Conference on Monday 17th September in Telford with added excitement.

With the theme of “Think Different”, they enjoyed a busy day of business and technical courses with top speakers from other industries. Kevin Byrne (founder of CheckaTrade) and Josephine Fairley (founder of Green & Blacks chocolate) were on hand to offer pearls of wisdom. The day flew by, and at the Award Ceremony finale, the Molsom team were delighted to be presented with the Award. Andrew Molsom, practice owner and Optometrist added, “ We are really proud to be presented with this Award, it rewards everyone in the team for their great efforts helping to deliver great eyecare to the Spalding area. The “Moment of the Year” was our recent story shared by our lovely patient Georgina. Ian Price originally recognised the life threatening condition, but he couldn’t do the job

Popular free course for potential start-ups in South Holland returns this November Following a successful, fully booked, workshop in August, anyone looking to start their own business in South Holland can get the skills and help they need with establishing their new enterprise by attending a free intensive three-day Starting in Business course in Spalding next month. The course, provided by NBV Enterprise Solutions and hosted by South Holland District Council at their Priory Road office, helps to transform ideas into businesses with the help and support of experienced trainers. On the programme, there is the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals also taking their first steps into their own businesses, and to benefit from the expertise of a company with over 30 years’

experience in helping people get their ideas off the ground. As well as the practical help during the workshop, it will also introduce attendees to the additional support that can be provided to them once they are up and running, including business advice, business workshops, networking, office facilities and much more. The intensive three-day course will run from Thursday 8 November. Upon completion of the 3 days, attendees will receive a certificate and more importantly everything they need to get their business up and running. Places can be booked by visiting nbv.co.uk/events/ or calling 0844 887 2568.

Kings Lynn Chri There are so many reasons to visit King’s Lynn during the countdown to Christmas. There will be the festive Late-Night Shopping spectacular program of events, an enchanting Christmas market, and Father Christmas will be jetting in to meet children in his grotto just to name a few! But all of these follow King’s Lynn’s Christmas Lights switch on event that promises to be an afternoon of festive fun on Sunday 25th November. Starting at 12 noon, there will be street entertainers, a glitter bar and face-painters, music and family-focused activities, before the countdown to the switch on begins at 4pm on the Tuesday Market Place. Father Christmas will be opening his grotto

Aspects of Femininity Art Exhibition Dr Patricia Buck’s Arts Council supported exhibition “Aspects of Femininity” will be in the Geest Gallery at Ayscoughfee Hall in Spalding throughout November. This collection of paintings and drawings will not be about equal rights, but rather set out to explore what represents femininity - the qualities that define being feminine. For the most part Patricia’s work as an artist consists of her popular Pet Portraits business. So, to gather inspiration and clear messages for this collection of paintings and drawings, as well as to encourage discussion and thoughtfulness about art in general, Patricia has been visiting schools and social groups.

She has gathered a rich variety of responses to her questions about those qualities that represent femininity to different people. “I’ve had some fabulous answers!” she says, “People have been telling me their ideas, varying from specific colours or textures or even pure concept like softness or nurture, to rather more complex ideas such as Faberge Eggs! The Faberge idea is not just because of the exquisite delicacy of the Eggs themselves but more that they were designed and created for a woman, the Empress Maria Fedorovna! What will I draw or paint in response to this?” Well, visit the exhibition to find out more!

doors on the 25th of November, just in time to pop along and help switch the Christmas Lights on too! Father Christmas can be found in the Vancouver Quarter every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday right up to Christmas. The grotto is a free event however booking is essential and bookings need to be made via the Vancouver Quarter website. Late Night Shopping launches on November 29th, this year there is a fun packed program of street entertainment, workshops and music. Back for a second year, on the King’s Lynn countdown to Christmas is a local makers market on November 29th that will see 60 traders all around the town selling a whole range of Norfolk handmade wares – perfect for finding unique presents for all the family. Stores around the town centre will remain open until 8pm every Thursdays leading up to Christmas.

I

recently attended the Conservative Party Conference where a couple of key announcements were made including a £38m capital pot for the new ‘T’ Level ( equivalent to A Levels but in vocational subjects) and doubling the number of careers leaders in schools, both of which are really important to the South Holland area in terms of higher skills in engineering, automation and robotics and linking these to those careers and skills required by our local businesses. The most important announcement however was undoubtedly the Prime Minister’s announcement on the removal of the cap that restricts the amount that council’s can borrow from their Housing Revenue Accounts. Essentially those councils such as South Holland who have retained their own council housing stock will be able to borrow against that stock for new housing developments with no restrictions. This will transform council house building that has had its hands tied for the past 30 years. The Prime Minister also said that austerity was at an end and that spending will go up for public services – well we will see, government are notoriously good at giving with one hand and taking away with the other, but this seems like good news on the face of it. In South Holland in terms of the wider market housing, since April 2018 there have been 118 housing completions, and 190 housing starts across the district. It is estimated that there will be 180 affordable houses built in 2018/19 and a further 210 built in

2019/20. Business across the District is buoyant and I am sure many of you will have seen Neame Lea’s nursery on the A16 which is set to become the second biggest building in the Uk covering some 75 acres. This is a real confidence boost to both the horticultural industry and business in the area and will of course mean more jobs. The Marstons Development just up the road is creating another 50 jobs and the second Spalding Power Station will also have a significant impact on the local economy during construction. The Economic Development team at South Holland is also in discussion with a number of other companies who are looking to expand in the next few years, which is very encouraging for our economy going forward. In terms of the University of Lincoln’s proposed Agri-Food Centre of Excellence at Holbeach, the County Council and the University have now agreed terms on site acquisition. The intention remains for the University to commence work on this building later this month. Later this week I will be meeting a delegation from Hunan Province in China who are keen to promote the Food Enterprise Zone to investors as well as cementing their ongoing relationship with the University of Lincoln and will represent a significant step forward in delivering this project. It is nice to have so much positive news for a change!

Advice

Universal Credit tribunal appeals If you’ve already asked for mandatory reconsideration and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) haven’t changed their decision, you can appeal to a tribunal. The tribunal will look at your reasons and make an independent decision. It’s overseen by a judge and separate from the DWP. The first thing you should do is look at your ‘mandatory reconsideration notice’. This is a letter you’ll get from the DWP - it will include the reason they didn’t change their decision. You can appeal the decision if you: • have been paid the wrong amount • have been refused Universal Credit when you should have got it • shouldn’t have been sanctioned - for example, if you missed a work-focused interview because you were ill You have 1 month from the date on your mandatory reconsideration notice to apply to a tribunal. You should still be able to appeal if it’s less than 13 months since the date on your mandatory reconsideration notice. You’ll need to have a good reason for the delay, for example if you:

• didn’t get the mandatory reconsideration notice • posted your appeal in time, but it got lost in the post • someone in your family was seriously ill • were given the wrong facts by the DWP • have only just been able to get advice to help you appeal The tribunal will extend the time you have to appeal if they think you have a good reason. It doesn’t matter if the DWP don’t agree with your reason. If HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) ask you to do something like send them a document and you take too long, they might cancel your appeal. This is known as having your appeal ‘struck out’. If your appeal was struck out for any other reason, you should still write to the tribunal and explain why your appeal shouldn’t have been struck out. You’ll get a warning letter first - it’ll tell you what to do to stop your appeal being struck out. If you don’t do what the warning letter says, you’ll get another letter after that explaining why your appeal was struck out. You’ll need to write to HMCTS to ask them to reopen your appeal. You’ll need to include: • your full name and address • your National Insurance number • the decision you’re appealing • the date your appeal was cancelled • why you failed to do something HMCTS asked for, if this was the reason your appeal was struck out • why you think your appeal should be looked at again Send this letter to the same address you sent your

appeal form to. You should write no more than 1 month after HMCTS wrote to tell you about the cancellation. If you need this time extended, explain in your letter why you missed the 1 month deadline. If the tribunal agree they’ll reopen your appeal. If the tribunal don’t agree to reopen your appeal, contact your nearest Citizens Advice to check if there’s anything else you can do. Filling in an appeal form You’ll need to fill in an SSCS1 form on GOV.UK to ask for an appeal. You can fill in the form online before you print it, or print a blank form and fill it in by hand. The form tells you what to send with it. If you’re not sure about anything, contact your nearest Citizens Advice. An adviser can help you fill in the form. The form asks for your: • name and contact details • National Insurance number • reasons for appealing It’s important to be specific when you explain why you’re appealing. List the reasons in your decision letter and mandatory reconsideration notice, and why you disagree. You should also refer to any evidence you’ve sent with the mandatory reconsideration notice. If you’ve got advice from your local Citizens Advice or another organisation, you should also write this on your form. The DWP should pass on any evidence you’ve given them to HMCTS. You don’t need to send it again with your appeal form or letter.

Mini Police

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?

Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Ayscoughfee Hall School Children at Ayscoughfee Hall School are well into the term’s work and have already enjoyed a number of exciting events. Year 6 are enjoying their topic of ‘India’ and recently spent a day with Sunita who led them in a range of activities such as storytelling and music. The whole class celebrated the end of their 11 Plus exams with a delicious meal at 1492 The Spice Affair…all in the name of research of course! They ate poppadums, rice, and chicken tikka masala as well as naan bread that they baked themselves. Spanish lessons have now begun across the school and are proving extremely popular, although French continues for years 5 and 6. Many of the Junior children took part in the Agilitas Cross Country Running Event and our teams did

extremely well, with the Under 9 Boys team winning a silver medal and the Under 9 Girls, Under 11 Boys and Under 11 Girls all winning their classes. Individual places were also taken by four of the children. The PTFA have held their first disco and we were also delighted to hold a Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan on 28th September. Clubs are running well and this year children have the opportunity to learn touch typing as well as computer coding, Lego, recorder and a wide range of sporting skills.

Spalding Parish Church of England Day School On Friday 28th November, Spalding Parish Church of England Day School held their annual Macmillan Coffee fundraiser. Staff, parents and children demonstrated their ‘Bake Off’ skills to produce a fantastic spread of cakes and biscuits. Y6 pupils, Harley and Tom, worked hard to make sure that everyone who attended had an enjoyable time – especially with their game of pin the cherry on the cake. Acting Head Teacher, Diane Mulley, was extremely grateful for all the support they received. The final total raised was £212.

Why Pupil Voice?

hildren live in a world that is there to be discovered by themselves - they have to find their own way and path their own futures, adults along with children don’t always learn right from wrong through the mediums of grown-ups saying no. Practice makes perfect and this is why the Lincolnshire Mini Police program has been written around the pedagogy of Pupil Voice. “The term Pupil Voice refers to the ways of listening to the views of pupils and or involving them in decision making. A feature of effective leadership is engaging pupils as active participants in their education and in making a positive contribution to their school and local community.” Department for Education “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn” Benjamin Franklin Historically police talks have been mostly delivered by a Police officer or Police Community Support Officer with limited guidance and as a circumstance of something that has occurred in their local neighbourhood. The Mini Police program has been written as a broad and balanced curriculum that falls in line with the national curriculum for

PHSE Education and fits into the Social, Moral, Spiritual, Cultural Curriculum headers (SMSC) and Fundamental British Values, there is a pathway through the Mini Police Curriculum and all the subjects are interweaving and link into Local and National crime Priorities. With it being written as a curriculum with lesson plans it helps the police service to be pro-active and ensure consistency across Lincolnshire as well as building children’s aspirations and in some cases we are igniting a love for emergency services, policing or a drive to be involved in their local communities via the means of Pupil Voice. We no longer attend schools and say they “must do this”; we now deliver a snippet of factual information and now ask “how could you make this better”. It is all in the language used and we have to remember not all children or areas are the same, and as the Mini Police programme is being ran in 119 schools across our county consistency was key. Pupil voice allows for a great deal of reflection and free thinking in the children and the facilitator. They are our future so why not give them the power to change it going forward.

his month I can’t wait to get going in … Gosberton! What a village of surprises. My human and I have driven along the busy road through here before. But today we turn off after a lovely leafy entrance and a cluster of shops, and get parked up ready to wander. It doesn’t take long before we are winding our way along, past houses close to the curb. If a person was to open their door, a curious Lab like me could end up inside! At one point we find ourselves exploring a beautiful and varied maze-like estate, and my human admits ‘Otis, I’m not quite sure where this path leads!’ Who knew there were

so many residential roads and pretty people kennels here? Of course, there’s plenty more to whet my whiskers in Gosberton. A bowling and snooker centre. A village pub (no time to settle in

We’ve been here, there and everywhere on our wanders today – even out into Gosberton’s surrounding fields. Year 12 and Beyond What are your Options?

S

taying in education does not mean you have to stay in school. While joining your school’s sixth form might feel like the most comfortable thing to do, it is worthwhile looking into local colleges as well as Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Volunteering if you feel like you are ready for the world of work. If you would like to study A-levels, you may have a sixth form attached to the school you currently study at but it is worth taking a look at other sixth forms in the area as the courses offered will vary. Local colleges will also offer A-levels so make sure your search is a thorough one. Alongside A-levels you will be familiar with such as English, Maths and Science you can study subjects which may be new to you such as Film Studies, Business and Law. Your GCSE grades will determine where you are able to study so take into consideration the subjects that you do well

in and enjoy when you are deciding which subjects to take forward. If you are more interested in learning a trade and getting busy with practical lessons, then a vocational qualification may be a good fit for you. Many vocational qualifications do not need you to have any prior experience, however most courses will still require grade A-C (new grades 9-4) passes in English and maths. Should you not achieve those grades you must continue to study them as part of your post-16 education, so you may still be accepted onto the course of your choice whilst achieving the required maths and English alongside. This area has some excellent colleges which offer a wide range of academic and vocational courses, with some even offering university level courses which would mean you could stay close to home, reducing your costs! Make sure you do your research to narrow down

your options as you will find that colleges offer many courses. Start by visiting websites for information and check out when open events and taster days are so you can visit and get a feel for the places and the areas you would like to study. If you are eager to get to work then an Apprenticeship is a great way to learn ‘on-thejob’ and gain quality work-based training whilst also getting paid. You will gain experience in the workplace but also have the support of a college where you will spend some of your time learning in the classrooms (or workshops, depending on the type of work placement). If you want to do an Apprenticeship but don’t feel quite ready then a Traineeship could be a better option for you. Completed over a much shorter period of time it gives you the opportunity to see how you fit within a business and sample the type of work you might do. Once you have gained the confidence and abilities then the next step could be on to an Apprenticeship. You also have the option to study for a qualification and also carry out some volunteering work in between your studies. Not only can you gain work experience in an industry you hope to one day work in and develop skills which will look good on your CV, volunteering can also be a good inclusion when you are preparing to fill our your UCAS forms and personal statements for university.

Greenpeace Boarding Kennels Greenpeace Boarding Kennels located in a quiet rural area between Spalding and Holbeach currently provides dog boarding within our purpose-built high-quality boarding kennels.

W

ith a strong focus on guest care, all aspects of your dog’s stay have been carefully designed to ensure that their stay is enjoyable and stress free. The ergonomic layout, with all kennels built around a central courtyard facing each other, means that your family member sees staff members working throughout the day, so they never feel deserted or left alone, providing them with visual stimulation. Our purpose-built exercise paddocks are used to exercise the dogs with all boarders getting at least two exercise periods every day subject to weather conditions. Our staff have all been carefully selected for their empathy with ongoing training and ongoing CPD. All of our staff members attend a two-day Force Free Handling and Behaviour course to ensure we know how to keep all of our guests as calm and relaxed as possible in a friendly and non-threatening way. Qualified Canine First Aiders are always available should the need arise, and we have Level 3 Animal Care qualifications to ensure your pets welfare at all times. Continuous Professional Development opportunities are provided for all staff, including formal canine related qualifications and observation opportunities of puppy training classes/dog training sessions/behaviour consultations. Our ethos is force and fear free for all aspects of care and interaction. Enrichment is a key focus at our boarding kennels, with all aspects of canine enrichment delivered daily. From playing music for our guests to using slow feeding bowls and puzzle balls for their breakfast and treats, playing in the paddocks and meeting other dogs safely to simply having a cuddle. We take the time to get to know the dogs to ensure we deliver the appropriate

stimulation for the individual. Greenpeace Kennels also provides space to Rescue Organisations with a number of dogs in our rescue kennels at any one time. Rehabilitation and retraining are key elements to our rescue work. Our Rescue Guests come from a variety of situations, often requiring help learning that humans can be kind, compassionate and enjoyable to be around. We work with a local Force Free Canine Behaviourist who often visits the kennels to work with some of our Rescue dogs with more complex behaviours to get them ready to live in a home again. Our staff will often sit in on these sessions learning the best approach for nervous and scared dogs which can also be used with our more nervous boarding guests as well. The Canine Care Industry is currently undergoing the biggest shake up in its history with The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 now in place. This is the first change to boarding regulations since 1963. Here at Greenpeace Kennels we have worked hard to ensure all of the new requirements are met and exceeded. All boarding establishments (Kennels and Home Boarding) will be inspected between now and the end of the year to ensure compliance and will be rated by the Council Licensing Officers with an individual establishment being required to display the rating in a prominent area within their business such as Reception or waiting areas. Our future expansion plans include the introduction of Greenpeace Aquapaws our Canine Hydrotherapy Centre in November 2018. Hydrotherapy is a low impact exercise that is excellent for injury rehabilitation, managing medical conditions, improving

muscle strength, circulation and joint mobility. It is also beneficial for weight loss and weight control with canine obesity being one of the biggest threats to the welfare of our canine companions. Kelly our Hydrotherapist has been trained at the World renowned Greyfriars Hydrotherapy Academy near Guildford in all aspects of Canine Hydrotherapy, from administration procedures, water quality

management, to the benefits of hydrotherapy with lots of practical training in their pool. We recommend any potential Customers to come along and view our facilities where we would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Health & Beauty

Causes of ear pain

An earache can be mild but an ear infection can cause debilitating pain. Earache and ear pain is particularly common in young children. It can be painful but isn’t usually a sign of anything serious. Ear infections are the most common cause of ear pain. When the ear becomes infected, inflammation and build up of pressure cause pain that can be intense. People with ear infections often have other symptoms, such as sinus pressure or a sore throat because infections from nearby areas may affect the ear. An ear infection can also be a standalone condition. Most ear infections are bacterial, not viral. Spotting earache in babies and young children A young child might have earache if they: • rub or pull their ear • don’t react to some sounds • have a temperature of 38C or above • are irritable or restless • are off their food • keep losing their balance Earache and ear pain can affect one or both ears. Whilst we would always recommend visiting your pharmacist or doctor there are some other home remedies you may want to try too! Hot and Cold Packs Heat from an electric heating pad or hot pack can reduce inflammation and pain in the ear.Apply a

hot pad to the ear for 20 minutes. For best results, people should touch the neck and throat with the hot pad. The heating pad should not be unbearably hot. People should never fall asleep with a heating pad, or allow a child to use a hot pack without adult supervision. A cold pack can help with the pain of an earache. Try wrapping ice in paper towels or freezing a cold pack and then covering it with a light cloth. Hold this to the ear and the area immediately under the ear for 20 minutes. The cold should not hurt, and parents should never apply ice directly to their children’s skin. Some people find that heat offers greater relief than cold. For others, alternating hot and cold packs (20 minutes hot, followed by 20 minutes cold) provides the best pain relief. Garlic Eating a clove of garlic a day may help prevent ear infections. Garlic has long been used in folk medicine to relieve pain. Some research suggests it has antimicrobial properties that can fight infection. People should not use it as a substitute for antibiotics a doctor has recommended. Instead, consider adding garlic to an antibiotic regimen to speed up relief. To prevent ear infections, try eating a clove of

garlic each day. Garlic ear drops may also reduce pain and prevent an infection from getting worse. Cook two or three cloves in two tablespoons of mustard or sesame seed oil until brown, then strain the mix. Then, apply a drop or two to each ear. Sucking Sucking can help reduce pressure in the Eustachian tubes, offering some relief. Breast milk Breast milk has antimicrobial properties. Some research suggests that a mother’s breast milk changes based on the microbes to which a baby is exposed. This means that breast milk is most effective in babies. However, some sources suggest that breast milk may even help adults. Infants and children should continue nursing to get the most benefits from breast milk. In nursing babies, as well as in children and adults, topical application of breast milk may also help. Even if it doesn’t, breast milk is unlikely to cause any serious side effects. People can try dropping a few drops of breast milk in each ear, and repeat the application every few hours as needed.

Look After Your Hands Winter is hard on your hands. Smooth, supple, and soft in September, hands can turn red, chapped, and rough by February. So why not think about prevention rather than cure now? The main culprit? Lack of moisture. During winter, the humidity in the outside air plunges. Inside, things are even drier, thanks to indoor heating. If you’re washing your hands frequently to avoid catching a cold or the flu, you could sap whatever natural oils are left in your skin.

20 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

That can leave your hands so dehydrated that they crack, peel, and bleed. The good news is once you recognize that, you’re halfway on your way to fixing the problem.

application becomes a habit. Remember to rub the hand cream or lotion over your cuticles and nails. Nails can become dry, just like the skin of the hands.

Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise To treat parched, scaly hands, you need to replace the moisture that your thirsty skin is missing. Drinking water, experts point out, won’t do that. It’s the moisturizer applied directly to the skin that will keep water from evaporating and give your skin a healthy, dewy appearance. Start moisturizing before there’s a problem. Five or six applications a day, will provide round-the-clock protection. To reach that goal, practice good product placement. Along with keeping a big jar or tube of your favorite over-the-counter moisturiser in your bathroom, stow smaller sizes in your purse, gym bag and on your desk so

How to Wash Your Hands To protect your hands while you’re protecting your health with frequent hand washing, choose a mild soap, use warm not hot water, pat your hands dry and apply a moisturiser right away. If you’ve got severely dry hands or you wash your hands a dozen or more times a day, substitute a hand-sanitising gel or wipes for some of the soap-and-water sessions. These alcohol-based sanitizers do dry the skin but for people who do a ton of hand washing -whether they’re doctors, mums, or dog-walkers -- it’s actually a bit gentler on the skin than soap and water. Top Tip: Wear gloves or mittens if you’re going to be outdoors for longer than a dash to a car on cold days. If your hands get wet, dry them, and then apply moisturizer.

Microblading is a form of eyebrow tattooing that replicates individual hair like strokes and looks very natural. Should you like a more defined and sharper brow then powder effect brows might suit you better, We can discuss all this at your free 15 minute consultation. These highly skilled lip treatments have a profound anti-ageing effect with an entirely natural and flattering look . If age has taken away colour, shape and definition, the solution is simple. Give corners of your mouth a lift and take years off your appearance, or you might just want your lips to be ready to go giving you the perfect pout or just a simple blush of colour. If you’re not sure of a permenant change, why not consider a lash lift or extensions with Laura or Sam to enhance your eyes.

Permanent Cosmetics at Crown Affair Hair and Beauty Permanent Cosmetic Makeup also known as Semi-Permanent and Micropigmentation, is an innovative procedure, in which carefully applied Hypo-allergenic pigments are implanted using disposable tiny micro-needles into the dermal layer of the skin (unlike permanent tattoos which go much deeper). Permanent Cosmetic Makeup can last for up to 2 years or more depending on a number of factors such as the age of skin, amount of time spent in the sun, and individual skin colour and tone. Here at Crown Affair Hair and Beauty we are excited to welcome Leighanne Campbell to the team offering cosmetic make up and dermaplaning treatments from our state of the art salon. What is Dermaplaning Dermaplaning is an amazing physical exfoliation, it removes the top dead layer of skin as well as the velour hair (peach fuzz) this will grow back exactly the same as before it’s physically impossible for it to be any different to reveal a smoother, brighter skin which lets your skincare products do exactly what you’re paying them to do. Using sterile medical blade which although sounds scary, when in the hands of a trained

Dermaplane professional is such a gentle yet powerful way to rejuvenate and smooth the skin. The blades that Leighanne trained with and use are unique to the training company, Skin Geek, that she qualified through, they cannot be copied or sold to any other than a skin geek trained professional, so when you book this treatment you are guaranteed the best blades and products that work in synergy with Dermaplaning. Skin Geek brought Dermaplaning to the UK two years ago and Leighanne is passionate about being trained by the best in order to offer the best treatments for her clients. Benefits of Dermaplaning: « Provides deeper product penetration « Removes soft facial hair that traps dirt and oils « Promotes smoother skin « Safe procedure that removes dead skin cells « Make-up glides on perfectly « Removes the appearance of fine lines « Reduces the appearance of acne scars « Instant results and no down time « Available to males except the beard area Leighanne will be in the salon on Thursdays and pleased to offer free consultations to clients.

Eat Out this Christmas Does the thought of cooking Christmas dinner stress you to the ends of the earth? Feeding relatives from far and wide whilst trying to build a train set, top up everyone’s glasses or open more presents can sometimes leave us feeling frazzled, so why not this year take the stress away and let someone else do the cooking for you! Though you may enjoy spending time with your family and friends at Christmas, you may not enjoy spending hours in front of a stove. You may not know how to cook, or you may not see the point in cooking for only a few people. No matter your reasons, you can choose to dine out for Christmas. To do this, figure out which restaurants are open, determine if you will need a reservation, and decide what type of

meal you would like. Research which restaurants are open. If you plan to eat out on Christmas Day, you should first figure out what restaurants will be having holiday hours. Some restaurants will be open on Christmas Eve, others will only be open for a set number of hours on Christmas day. Some restaurants will not be open at all on Christmas Day. You can do an online search for restaurants in your area that will be open on Christmas Day. You may also consider calling your favorite restaurants ahead of time to check their Christmas hours. Determine if you need a reservation. Some restaurants require you to have a reservation on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

This means you must decide ahead of time which restaurant you would like to choose and how many will be in your party. Check the restaurant’s website or call them to determine if you need a reservation.

Check the price. Due to the day of service, many Christmas dinners or buffets may be more expensive than a normal dinner. Before you decide where to eat, you should check the price of the Christmas meal.

Candlesticks Hotel and Restaurant

The restaurant has an extensive and varied menu using the finest local Lincolnshire produce as well as combining specially sourced produce from Madeira and Portugal. The restaurant retains traditional standards of silver service with classical French, English and Portuguese cuisine. We can cater for vegetarians and vegans as well as people with special dietary needs.

Focus on Donington The village has one public house, The Black Bull. There is also a Coop and a Costcutter in the Market Place. Though Donington is on an operating passenger rail line with stopping services it has no station, and there has been no campaign to reopen the closed station, though in 2008 Hull Trains proposed reopening as a railhead to nearby Boston for a direct Lincoln to London service. Donington has football teams for two age groups: Old Doningtonians for

over eighteens, and Young Dons (established in 1996) for anyone under that age; Old Dons play in the Saturday Boston League and Young Dons on a Sunday in the Mid-Lincolnshire Junior League. There are two schools; the Donington Cowley Endowed Primary School, and the Thomas Cowley Academy with its four house system - Cowley, Flinders, Bass and Swift. For the children there is the Teen Skate Park for 11+, and the local park and playpark.

Protect Your Home This Winter

Did you know home breakins actually increase during the winter months? Home Security systems can help to protect your home during the winter months when there is a concern of break-ins. Since the days become shorter, the evenings become darker quickly, which normally means homeowners are not around when the home is dark. Motion sensor lighting and security cameras can help to protect a home from burglaries. Coming home to a break-in is a devastating moment for anyone, which is why it is important to consider installing a security system. There are some easy tips to adopt to keep your home safe this winter. Lock the Doors and Windows A thief will search for areas of weakness of the home. The doors and windows are areas of the home that are common weak points. Always check each window and door to ensure they are locked before you leave the home. If you have a home security system installed, the windows will beep if they are not locked properly. Motion Detection The other thing you need to consider adding to your home is motion detection lighting. Keeping your home well-lit is important to prevent burglaries as most burglaries occur in the darkness. When the lights are on, it makes it harder for someone to break-in unnoticed. A good security system will include automation options that allow you to program the

28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

system from your computer or your smartphone. Automatic timers are another option that will help to keep your home safe if you are not around. Remove Greenery The best way to keep your home safe during the winter is to remove the trees and other things that are around the home. It will eliminate hiding spots, and you can see people’s tracks if we have any snow. If you have patio furniture and other things outside the home, lock them in the garage so they cannot be used to help a person climb onto a roof. Invest in a Security System The best way to keep your home safe in the winter is by investing in a quality security system. They will alert the police if the windows and doors are opened without the proper code input within a few seconds. Staying safe is vital to your families safety and keeping your assets and loved ones protected from intruders.

Plant a magnolia tree ready for a beautiful spring display. This is best done in moist, rich and slightly acidic soil. Use a good quality compost to get it off to a good start. Ensure that there is enough water around the base and plant in an area of full sun to partial shade.

Top Tip Insulate your greenhouse to keep plants snug over the cold winter spell. You can purchase special bubble wrap for this purpose which can be held in place with plastic clips that fit into the grooves between the glazing bars.

Motoring

Tips for Motoring in the Winter Winter is here, which means earlier sunsets and reduced visibility on the roads.

Get your lights and windscreen wipers in order In colder weather, clear windscreens of condensation or ice before setting of. Always give yourself extra time, to ensure visibility is at an optimum before starting your journey. Windscreen wipers - Make sure your wiper blades are in good condition. If they squeak as they wipe, they probably need replacing, always make sure they are turned off before starting the ignition to save the blades and the risk of a blown motor fuse when the first frost hits. Blades will last for two years at the most. New blades clear the screen more effectively and so help reduce dazzle from the sun. Now is a good time to renew worn blades. Clear out plenum chambers - the tray-like area under the bonnet, below the windscreen.

This can fill up with water when it gets blocked with leaves. This water can seep into the car’s electrics, causing expensive and potentially dangerous damage.

Windscreen washer fluid Top up and treat with a good quality, purpose-made additive to reduce the chance of freezing. Don’t use ordinary engine antifreeze but do check the handbook carefully to make sure you fill the right reservoir. Don’t use washing up liquid either as this can cause a blockage.

This is one of the most common causes of breakdown at any time of year, but particularly in the winter when electrical loads are higher. If there’s any sign of the battery struggling now, the likelihood is that it’ll let you down at some time during the winter, particularly if it’s more than five years old. It makes sense to renew the battery now to avoid the hassle and inconvenience of an unplanned failure later. Check all bulbs regularly (at least once a week) not forgetting

brake lights and number plate lights. The handbook will show you how to change bulbs, though some head light bulbs may require a visit to the garage. Best to carry some spare bulbs!

Take the 20p test Check all tyres for condition, pressure and tread depth. We recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, so if the treads are getting low think about buying new tyres now before the colder weather sets in.

Battery and Bulbs Keep the top of the battery clean and dry and make sure the terminals are tight and free from corrosion. If a battery is more than three years old, check it now; you might save yourself many a frustrating start to a morning. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 35

New SsangYong Musso 2018 PROS ‘N’ CONS à Handsome à Kit à Cabin space à Towing ability à Handling

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(2018 Ssangyong Musso Saracen 2.2 4x4 auto - as tested)

T

im Barnes-Clay has been testing the new Ssangyong Musso recently. Here are his thoughts on the Korean pickup truck. You can try putting lipstick on a pig, but it still won’t make it beautiful – unless you’re into pigs. And that’s the point here. Unless you like pick-up trucks, you won’t be into the Ssangyong Musso. Now this name might be familiar to you. It’s a moniker that was used way back in the early 90s on a pug ugly SUV. This vehicle though is a strict pick-up with 4x4 capability. I happen to think it’s handsome too – and I’m not even into swine. There’s a reason for its good looks - the Musso has the identical body-on-chassis construction as the Ssangyong Rexton SUV. Indeed, it even has the same dashboard, which makes it feel quite upmarket. There are pliable materials covering the dash, the steering wheel is fully adjustable, and the switchgear doesn’t feel like it’s out of a Tonka toy. The South Korean made pick-up is also furnished with kit such as an infotainment system, which is decent by any standards. The 9.2-inch display in some models is large, luminous and easy to operate. It also boasts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, the Musso houses a remarkably hi-resolution reversing camera which even enables you to observe the tow bar. This is handy if you are lining-up up a trailer to lug. Towing is something that the new Ssangyong Musso is brilliant at. It’s the only pick-up in its segment that can haul a

3.5-tonne trailer while carrying up to a tonne in the load bed. The Mercedes-Benz obtained 2.2-litre oil-burner it uses is also enjoyed in the Rexton. However, the Musso is fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission rather than the seven-speed auto employed by the Rexton. It has lots of grunt and is smooth compared with, say, Ford’s Ranger. There’s plenty of space up front, and when it comes to rear passenger room, the Musso beats its rivals, with only Nissan’s Navara coming close. And behind the wheel, whether towing or not, the pick-up feels okay-ish – in a straight line at least. The only fly in the ointment for the Musso is its rear springs. They bounce pugnaciously over ruts, while the somewhat soft damping battles to keep the pick-up’s frame in check. Things do recover, however, when the South Korean’s cab is full. And with a tonne of cargo in the rear load bed, it irons itself out considerably. Mind you, Ssangyong says it’s thinking about changing the rear springs to make things a little more manageable for UK driving. It still won’t make it a pick-up to hurl around bends though – but let’s face it, not many are suited to that. It feels substantial, and always will. That means it rolls a lot and will never match the Rexton or any other SUV for handling.

à Max speed: 1157 mph à 0-62 mph: 12.2 secs à Combined mpg: 32.8 à Engine layout: 2.2 four-cylinder diesel à Max. power (PS): 182 à CO2: 226 g/km

Price: £26,245 (ex VAT)

The price-tag of the Ssangyong Musso makes you forgive its so-so handling. It’s cheaper than Mitsubishi’s L200 for starters. There are four trim levels to select, too. While the entry level EX is the most workhorse-like, it sits on alloy wheels and contains lots of factory-fitted equipment, including air conditioning, Bluetooth, and DAB radio. Over that, the Rebel boasts heated and cooled faux leather seats, and an eightinch touchscreen. It also wears distinct external graphics. The flagship Saracen and Rhino Mussos add real leather, that earlier mentioned 9.2-inch screen, and a heated steering wheel. What’s more, the Rhino rolls off the production line with ready-to-go allterrain tyres, and black 20-inch alloys. Also standard on the Musso is a segmentleading seven-year, 150,000-mile warranty. That, more than anything, demonstrates how much faith Ssangyong has in its new model. Certainly, this pick-up is no pig in a wig – and you can forget the lipstick, too.
