At home we have been busy making plans for the rest of the year, filling up the diary with days out, mini breaks and meet ups with friends and family. I always find time goes so quickly when you’re juggling running a home, children and work so if I don’t put something concrete in, it never happens! I cannot believe that this year my little boy will be 3 and we’re already thinking about his party and presents. Where has that time gone? But let’s nit wish time away and back to March, this month we are looking at all the romance with our wedding feature looking at the pitfalls of DIYing. In our family life section we are talking all things childcare, when you’re working you need to find reliable, quality childcare that your child(ren) and you are happy with – it can be a difficult decision to make on what is the best option for your family. Don’t forget mum this month! It’s Mother’s Day on March 11th, check out our guide on page 29. This month Tim is test driving the A4 Avant, Annette from the Village Midwives talks about celebrating Mother’s Day and we visit Donington to see what it has to offer local residents. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and have a great month!

Life saving charity receives funding boost A Lincolnshire charity will be able to respond to more emergency call outs thanks to a new funding grant. LIVES, who provide a much needed first response service to emergencies across Lincolnshire have been awarded a grant of £15,270 from CDS Action which is the charity set up by community dental social enterprise CDS-CIC to support projects in the communities where it operates. The additional funding will be used to recruit and train three additional

medical responders. The first minutes following a major trauma or serious illness can make the difference between life and death. Providing the right medical treatment within that window, not only save lives, it can help to ensure better patient recovery and outcomes. In Lincolnshire, the combination of a highly dispersed population and a very rural landscape and road network makes

it extremely difficult to reach patients fast to provide clinical assessment and deliver the necessary care. LIVES utilises volunteer medics to bring the hospital to the patient, wherever they may be, minimising the delay in getting life-saving treatment underway. Medics are volunteers who are health care professionals with full or part time paid employment, volunteering in their spare time between shifts. CDS provides community dentistry services across much of the East of England, including Lincolnshire. As a social enterprise, any surplus is reinvested back into the support it provides for patients or into community health and well-being projects through the charity CDS Action. So far, £125,000 has been awarded in grants to charities, social enterprises or community groups. Alison Reid, CDS Chief Executive said: ‘CDS is an employee owned social enterprise and Community Interest Company. Our commitment in working with our charity, CDS Action is to ensure we improve the health and wellbeing of our communities, as CDS Action was set up to increase our impact and share the benefits from any surplus we are successfully able to donate. We hope that our investment will make a real difference in Lincolnshire via the skilled support of LIVES.”

News Dignity Action Day Celebrated At St John’s Care Home With Digni-Tea Event St John’s Care Home in Spalding marked Dignity Action Day with a Digni-tea party and activities to get everyone talking about dignity in care. Residents, staff and visitors at the Spalding care home wrote down what dignity meant to them on leaves that residents had painted and cut out. The leaves were then tied on to their ‘Dignity Tree’ and displayed in the home for everyone to read. Dignity Action Day is an annual opportunity for health and social

care workers, and members of the public to uphold people’s rights to dignity in care. The day is promoted across the UK on 1st February 2018. “The idea of Dignity Action Day is to highlight a more respectful way of behaving towards vulnerable people but also reminds everyone that staff have a right to be treated with dignity and respect too”. Explained Juliet Peall, Home Manager at St John’s Care Home.

A

local newspaper front page caught my attention last week. Not unusually for a newspaper you often only get one side of the story, because that’s what sells the paper and gets people to read it, write in letters and generate interest in the paper. I have no problem with that as it is what they are there to do. The headline ‘ Tens of thousands spent on Councillors Ipads’ , was however I thought worth justifying. I am actually writing this on an Ipad. When I first became a Councillor I am not sure whether the postman loved or hated me but they certainly had challenges posting inch depth agendas, reports and briefings through my letter box on a nearly daily basis. It was not then unusual and it still isn’t to get reports 200 plus pages in length and as you might imagine the cost of sending these out was astronomical. It was not just postage costs, but printing and considerable Officer time compiling the reports for each individual Councillor. South Holland has 37 Councillors and Lincolnshire County Council 70, so the costs associated also ran into the tens of thousands. So I would suggest that the savings and efficiencies well outweighs the costs. The big bonus of IPads is that you can now read all those committee reports via a special app designed for local government wherever you are, at home, at the meeting or on the train. You can also access all your emails wherever you are and that can be for me at least 70-80 a day, giving a much better, more efficient service and quicker response to enquiries from constituents and officers. It is also considerably easier to access information quickly in response to people’s queries and is useful for when you are writing reports or articles for magazines and newspapers. It is basically a mobile office and I think most of us now would struggle to do the job without them. Of course you can still phone me or other Councillors and most now will have mobile

Nick’s Notes phones ( paid from our own money), as the job of being a Councillor means you spend more time on the road than at home. My mobile for reference is 07866 415688! Now that is off my chest, you may have heard in the news recently that South Holland was successful in a bid to the government for £12million to enable the delivery of the northern section (Pinchbeck end of town) of the Spalding Western Relief Road. The allocation was one of the largest nationally and the biggest in the East Midlands which is a huge tribute to the South Holland Team in particular. They put the bid together in an increasingly good working partnership with Lincolnshire County Council and the Lincolnshire Enterprise Partnership. The money will deliver crucial road infrastructure, none more so that a bridge over the main rail line and the obvious benefits of that in the long term to Spalding as a whole, but also a roundabout on the B1356 Spalding / Pinchbeck Road. All of this will provide access to new housing land, which is really what the government want to see delivered. The government is committed to delivering up to 300,000 new homes a year by the mid 2020’s and this round of funding will deliver the first 200,000 across the UK. In Spalding this infrastructure funding will mean an initial 600 homes and a further 4,000 homes over a longer period. To put this in perspective the local plan that is just completing the inspection process is suggesting a target of 550 homes to be built per year across South Holland and that is challenging to say the least. However this does means jobs and will provide a considerable boost to the local economy by securing existing jobs and creating jobs for the future and well as increasing footfall and spend in the town centre.

Advice

Citizens Advice

Using an estate agent

...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems

If an estate agent is selling a property for you, there is a contractual agreement between the estate agent and you. If you have a problem with an estate agent it is usually necessary to check a copy of any written agreement between you and the estate agent and establish what verbal agreements, if any, were made. As the seller, you pay the estate agent for their services and the estate agent is therefore acting on your behalf. It is your interest they will represent and the buyer should bear this in mind if they are interested in a house being sold through an estate agent. All estate agents dealing with residential property must belong to a government approved complaints redress scheme. There are three approved schemes: • The Property Ombudsman • The Ombudsman Services: Property • The Property Redress Scheme. If you have a complaint about an estate agent when you buy or sell property, you will be able to refer the complaint to whichever scheme the estate agent belongs to. Estate agents that refuse to join a scheme can be fined. The bill is too high You may think that the bill from the estate agent, after the sale is completed, is too high.

It is important to check that the bill gives a clear breakdown of the costs, for example, the commission fee, advertising, VAT. The bill should then be compared to the original agreement between you and the estate agent. You decide not to sell If you decide not to continue with the sale of your home, you may have to pay some estate agents’ charges, for example, to cover any costs the estate agent has already incurred. This will depend on the original contract between the seller and the estate agent. You want to use an additional estate agent If you have been using one estate agent this is known as ‘sole agency’. When you agree a sole agency with an estate agent the contract will usually state how long this period of sole agency will last. At the end of this period you are free to use one or more additional estate agents. If you use one or more additional estate agents before the period of sole agency has come to an end, you are breaking the contract with the original estate agent. This means that if the new estate agent finds a buyer for the house you would have to pay commission not only to the new estate agent but also to the agent with whom you had the sole agency agreement. If the original agent found a buyer, the amount of commission that the seller would have to pay to the new estate agent would depend on the type of agreement you had with them. However, you may be able to negotiate changing the sole agency agreement to a joint sole agency agreement with the original estate agency.

You want to change estate agents You may want to change your estate agent. You should check the terms of the agreement you have with the estate agent to see if this is possible. If it is possible you may still have to pay some charges to the estate agent to cover costs, such as advertising, that the estate agent has incurred. You have found your own buyer You may have found your own buyer for the property who has not come through the estate agent, for example, a friend may want to buy the property. You are entitled to sell to a buyer who has not been found by the estate agent but you may find that you will still have to pay the estate agent. What you have to pay will depend on the contract. You are not satisfied with the service provided You may not be satisfied with the service the estate agent is providing, for example:• the estate agent may not be sending out details of your property to potential buyers • the advertising is not what you wanted • the details about the house are inaccurate or inadequate • the estate agent is discriminating against you. You may wish to consider complaining to the estate agent in writing or changing to a different estate agent. If you are not satisfied with the estate agent’s response to your complaint, you can complain to The Property Ombudsman, The Ombudsman Services: Property or The Property Redress Scheme depending on which redress scheme the estate agent belongs to.

School News

Spalding Parish C of E Day School A theatre group called Tutti Frutti (part of the Theatre York) performed the ‘Ugly Duckling’ for the last time until their World Tour and Spalding Parish Church of England Day School were lucky to secure their last UK performance. Many student’s hearts were warmed as they took their last bow and went behind the stage. One of the students quoted: ‘I had a really fantastic time with them and it was really funny!’ The main plot is about a duckling who is different from his siblings. It feels like no one cares about him apart from Mother Duck. Then a series of animals including: a feline cat, needy dog, a martial artist goose and an awesome swan meet Ugly (the duckling or so he thinks). Ugly goes missing…will he be found?

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?

Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

The group has many other plays, but the ‘Ugly Duckling’ has a really strong and important message. It will be a play that will stick in your mind for all the right reasons. I would recommend this to all ages as it will touch everyone’s heart. It is the cast who give it their all (110%). It will be a while until they are back in the UK, but it will be worth the wait.

Wisbech Grammar School Wisbech Grammar School pupils were thrilled to present a cheque for £1208 to Tammy Green from Scotty’s Little Soldiers at a special assembly on Monday 29 January 2018. Scotty’s Little Soldiers is the chosen charity of Prep School at WGS and pupils are committed to raising as much money as possible for this fantastic charity. This charity was set up to help bereaved British Forces children and is dedicated to supporting

children and young people who have lost a parent whilst serving in the British Armed Forces. Scotty’s Little Soldiers Founder Nikki Scott’s original vision for the charity was to provide opportunities for bereaved Forces children to smile again. Since then she has realised that the charity does so much more than this, but the Smiles Programme remains core to what they offer their beneficiaries. “We are thrilled to be fundraising for Scotty’s

Little Soldiers this year and very proud of the amount of money which has raised; these funds were generated by through our fundraising charity ball which was held in November 2017 and bobble hat day. Our pupils are very committed to raising as much as possible for this charity!“ Keryn Neaves (Senior Deputy Head- Prep School) Fundraising and developing a community spirit is at the heart of WGS and pupils are passionate about raising money and making a difference.

Your only way of remembering anything prior to this is your ‘i-diary’. You tell it where you’ve been, what you’ve been doing and who you know. Health & Beauty

Look After Your Eyes Mum (or Grandma!) may have been right. “Don’t sit too close to the T.V. or you’ll go blind!” Did your parents tell you of the ill effects of watching too much television?! Were you told your eyes will go square from sitting too close?!

T

his warning may have come from the early days of television when television sets emitted radiation. Radiation is no longer a risk, but we sit in front of video games, tablets and computer screens and damaging your eyesight is still a reality. Your eyes may not go square, but sitting too close to your computer can create eye strain and adverse effects on your vision.

Computer Usage Risks Eye Health It is hard to believe that many of us didn’t even know how to turn on a computer twenty years ago. Today, even your Grandma is probably surfing the internet and young children are learning their ABCs on tablets. What is the result? Eye strain. Our eyes just aren’t designed to stare at a flat screen for hours and hours. As a result, your eyes have to work overtime to keep things in focus. Like any other muscle in our body when they are fatigued, the strained eye muscles produce blurry vision, headaches and fatigue – maybe even your forehead feels “fried.” The muscles inside your eyes are very much like a lens on a camera. They change the shape and size of your eye when you are focusing on an object (they don’t actually become square – thank goodness!). But when you look at things up close, like a computer screen, for long periods of time, the muscles become stressed.

Computer Vision Syndrome Diagnosis Maybe your job requires hours of work at a computer. Maybe you like to spend your free time ‘surfing the net’. Whatever the reason, your body is probably feeling the effects of spending too much time logged on—tired eyes, headaches, neck pain, etc. This is now identified as Computer Vision Syndrome! Luckily, help is on the way. Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is temporary condition resulting from focusing the eyes on a computer display for extended, uninterrupted periods of time. Some symptoms of CVS include: Headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, redness in the eyes, fatigue, eye strain, dry eyes, irritated eyes’, double vision and difficulty refocusing the eyes Thankfully, CVS will not permanently damage the eyes or cause a loss of vision. Though it is one of the most common medical ailments that can affect learning and working. 16 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

The way I see it, we are going to be using more and more computers of various shapes and sizes far more as time goes by. Here are some tips and techniques for you to minimise the impact of CVS and relax, refresh and reduce eye strain.

Blink! The average human being blinks 20 times a minute – but only 7 times a minute when using a computer. The longer the eye remains open between blinks, the more likely the cornea is to dehydrate, burn or ache. Blink often to keep the eyes moist. It washes your eyes in naturally therapeutic tears.

Look Away For every 20 minutes that you spend watching television, reading, or working on the computer, stare at an object 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds. Better yet, take a 10-minute bathroom break at least every two hours, even if you don’t have to go. Walk there, back or anywhere, letting your eyes idle. Hey, chit-chat with a co-worker while you are at it and ask them how they are doing!

Eye Exercises Bring an object (such as a pen) as close to your eyes as possible while still being able to focus on the object clearly, then focus on an object 10 feet away from you. Repeat this exercise for 3 to 5 minutes several times per day. Roll your eyes upward towards your eyebrows, and then roll your eyes in a large circle. Repeat every few hours when using your computer or watching television to combat Computer Vision Syndrome.

Monitor and Screen Changes If you found that you are feeling dizzy after being on the computer all day, but subsides after you stop using the computer, only to

come back the next day as soon as you get back on the computer, then turn down the brightness on your screen. In addition, position your monitor so you are looking down, not up. Tilt your screen slightly downward, so its center is about 4 to 8 inches below eye level. Then, you need to sit at least 65cm away from your computer screen because sitting close requires the muscles in your eyes to work harder.

Try Natural Home Remedies This might sound funny, but put potato slices on your closed eyes for about 20 minutes. If you eyes are burning, itchy and irritated, this old homemade remedy just might help you. Raw potato has drying and disinfectant properties, as well as being a rich source of vitamin C. Store potato slices in water in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to help sooth your eyes. Rose water is a relaxer and can be used as eye drops for soothing effect in tired and fatigued eyes. Wash and flush your eyes in cool tap water. Dry by dabbing with a clean towel, but do not rub. Let rest for a few minutes and wash and flush with cotton balls soaked in rose water. Do this at bedtime and before sleeping apply the soaked cotton balls to eyelids and leave overnight. In the morning, rinse again. The benefits are clean fresh sparkling healthy eyes. You’ll feel more awake and alive. Make sure you remove all eye make up before washing with rose water.

Advice Worth Hearing!

Y

ou probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life.

If I think I have a problem, how can you help? We are a privately run local family business with full time hearing centres located in Peterborough, King’s Lynn & Horncastle. We also hold day clinics at Whittlesey and Kirton Medical Centre. We are proud to have some of the

most sophisticated testing equipment available and offer FREE hearing tests, and if preferred, full diagnostic hearing assessments in a sound proof environment, or in the comfort of your own home. We provide independent and impartial advice and can provide a FREE hearing aid trial (with no obligation). We are able to create a personalised solution for all your hearing requirements based on lifestyle, cosmetics & importantly - budget. Our business model is based around good old fashioned values with free after- care which is second to none. What other Services do you offer? We also provide a comprehensive wax removal service through irrigation, micro suction & instrumentation. Wax removal is becoming more & more difficult to have administered through some GP surgeries and can sometimes involve frustrating & lengthy delays. We also offer advice on Tinnitus Management & provide custom solutions for noise and hearing protection. Are hearing aids big and clumsy? These days, digital hearing aids can be very discreet & almost undetectable - but they’re still powerful enough to help with even the severest of hearing losses. Most people are amazed at the size & performance of modern hearing aids. They help you hear every day sounds and make it much easier to follow conversations. Your confidence in talking to people should improve & everyday & social occasions will become less of a struggle. Some hearing aids also help reduce certain unwanted background noises & if you have tinnitus, you may find it disturbs you less when you wear a hearing aid. Some hearing aids can connect to telephones, mobile telephones, televisions, computers, IPads etc. For those that find hearing aids fiddly, there are now rechargeable solutions so batteries do not have to be changed.

What makes you different from the competition? We are a local family run business with many years of experience. We have access to all makes and models and can provide impartial advice accordingly. It’s our combination of an extensive range of products, experience, continuity, in depth testing, dedicated time and attention to detail that is a winner. If you spend time with someone to get their prescription and fitting correct, the quality of the final result will always be superior. We are a Hearing Care Company that is 100% dedicated and focused on hearing alone.

How can I tell if I have a hearing problem? Typical indicators include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to hear in noisy environments, confusing words or misunderstanding what’s being said in conversation or having to turn the T.V up. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book your FREE hearing assessment with ourselves by calling one of the numbers above, and we can then assess whether you have any degree of hearing loss.

What should I do next? The most important thing to do is not ignore it! In most cases hearing deteriorates gradually & it often affects people around you more than yourself. Wearing a hearing aid can make a real difference to your quality www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 19 23

Follow Your Dreams The Chapman family, from Spalding, are on the final leg of their round-the-world trip, which began last September. Nigel, Louise and son Kian (8) are now in Asia, having been to the west coast of America, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Here, Nigel tells Simply the latest instalment of their travels:

W

out to be about the most expensive accommodation we’ve encountered. It was our first stop after leaving Australia and we stayed in an AirBnB small flat just outside the city centre. The airport is a snapshot of the city itself - modern, clean and attractive, it’s easy to see why it’s regarded by some as one of the world’s finest. The city waterfront is particularly attractive, with skyscrapers and magnificent hotels - none more so than the Marina Simply Magazines Advert - PRINT READY.pdf 1 16/01/2018 13:19:10 Bay Sands with

e’d always wondered if we’d make it to this point with some money left in the budget. Knowing Asia would be less of a squeeze on our money than the other destinations was one of the reasons we put it last on our itinerary. However, Singapore turned

its three segments joined by a “surfboard” top with an infinity pool and rooftop garden. Even with our prudent expenditure, unfortunately the finances didn’t stretch to a night there. The whole area is simply stunning at night (a popular image for postcards and tourism shots) and free lights and music shows in the harbour and Gardens In The Bay are breathtaking. Away from the decadence, Chinatown and Little India were interesting places to wander around. Getting a glimpse inside the enormous and beautiful temples was a new cultural experience for us all.

After four night, it was on to Malaysia. If truth be told, Louise and I weren’t that taken with Kuala Lumpur. Having been assured we’d enjoy it, we were a little disappointed to find it limited on attractions and not as easy on the eye as we’d anticipated. The Petronas Twin Towers once the world’s tallest building - was an exception, a fabulous spectacle even more stunning by night when simple lighting showcases it perfectly. Much classier than the KL Tower which is illuminated much more glitzily. Much better for us was the time we spent further north in Taman Negara - a national park

with rainforest 130 million years old. Here we trekked through the jungle, sped along over river rapids and dropped in on an Aboriginal people’s village. After learning about their survival skills and the efforts by the government to integrate them while allowing their culture and individuality to remain, Kian got to experience a blowpipe - and hit the target with a dart. A couple of days later a local guide took the three of us on a fascinating day-long scramble through caves and jungle, learning about the climate, rubber trees and the wildlife. It felt brilliant to have such a

memorable personal experience, with bats flying around us and seeing monkeys, wild boar hoofprints and a fence which elephants had charged through! Our stay in Malaysia completed with a few days on the islands of Penang and Langkawi. Here we took time to snorkel, ride the world’s steepest cable car and - naturally, in Asia - indulge our tastebuds with all manner of spicy foods and fruit juices. his month we celebrate Mothering Sunday and I would like to share a story I overheard on the train last week. There were 2 thirtysomething women sitting in front of me going to London to see a musical. They were discussing the endlessness and unexpected loneliness of mothering and how their other halves were seemingly blind to the struggles there were experiencing. To cut a long story short, they had decided to treat themselves as they were not expecting anything other than homemade ‘yoghurt pot crafts’ from their other halves on behalf of their small children. It got me thinking about what we expect in return for parenthood and the sacrifices we inevitably make. Should we expect those sacrifices to be recognised and rewarded for them to be worthwhile? If we aren’t rewarded, are our endeavours ultimately unrecognised? What do we consider to be sufficient recognition? So many questions! I really do believe that Mothering Sunday shouldn’t be about ourselves. It should be about our own mothers. Not all people have children, but all people have a mother. For some, the mother-child relationship is strong; they are an active and welcome part of our lives. For some, relationships are more strained and infinitely more complex. For others, their mothers are no longer here, and this poses the most difficult question of all. How do we celebrate or improve upon the love we have for our own mothers when they aren’t here

to receive it? We still have a relationship with them (good and bad) regardless of their physical presence. Things that they did or said stay with us forever. Healing those things starts with self-love I think, with a side of forgiveness. As a mother, I feel I get it wrong most days in one way or another. I work too many hours, I’m short tempered, impatient, dole out exacting standards that I wouldn’t hold myself to, worry about the quality of the food I’m preparing, the number of hours sleep that are/aren’t being had, that playtime outweighs structured academic learning...the list goes on. When I am gone, I would like to think my son could forgive my endless short-comings. What am I teaching him if not to love himself enough to survive on his own and not to have to carry round the weight of the things he believes I got right or wrong? In the same way, I hope you can love, forgive and be grateful to your own mothers – with you or not, good relationship or bad, and embrace the endless circle of the Maiden, the Mother & the Crone. We are all doing the very best job we can, but sometimes that doesn’t always translate. Don’t base your worth as a mother in the ‘quality’ of the gift you get from your child. I would be immensely grateful and proud to receive ‘yoghurt pot crafts’ because March 11th is not about me; not about what I see as fit reward for my efforts. It about mothering, and that means it’s always about your child.

Your Childcare Choices If you’re planning to return to work after your maternity leave, you’ll need to organise childcare for your little one.

Day Nurseries Nursery staff are trained to create a safe and stimulating environment. Children are usually grouped by age, so your child will join in with activities suitable for his development. He’ll be assigned a keyworker, who is responsible for keeping you up to date on how your child’s getting on. Nurseries must meet certain national standards and teach a curriculum designed for young children, this is monitored via OFSTED. This provides a structure for your child’s learning and care. Day nurseries are different from nursery schools. Nursery schools, or preschools, are often attached to a primary school. They’re for children aged between three years and five years, and usually open during school term times only.

bedclothes A nanny should also assist in the physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of your child. This means doing things such as taking him swimming, reading to him, taking him to playgroups, or supporting him in reaching development milestones. Although nannies aren’t required to hold a qualification in childcare, most take on some form of formal training or study. Your nanny carries a lot of responsibility in caring for your child. So make sure you find a carer you trust, and that your child is comfortable with. If employing a nanny seems beyond your budget, it may be useful to know that some families share a nanny, splitting the costs and legal responsibilities.

Childminder Childminders can care for up to six children at a time, including their own. No more than three children should be younger than five, and of these three, only one should be under 12 months old. This means a childminder will be able to give your child plenty of attention and one-to-one care. Like day nurseries, childminders must be registered with the appropriate authority for their country. However, they must first complete a pre-registration course that covers topics such as child nutrition, food hygiene, and health and safety. Many childminders take on further studies to gain additional qualifications, such as a diploma or degree in childcare.

Au pair An au pair is a young person from abroad who has come to the UK to learn English. Typical responsibilities of an au pair include babysitting in the evenings, helping with light housework, and looking after your child during the day when needed. An au pair will stay in your home, as part of your family. You’ll need to pay her a small fee and provide her with meals and a bedroom. Most au pairs are not trained in childcare, although some may have done a bit of babysitting or looked after younger siblings. For this reason, many agencies suggest that au pairs are best suited to parents who have preschool or school-aged children.

Nanny What does a nanny do? A nanny is employed by you to care for your child in your own home. Depending on what you want your nanny to do and the age of your child, a nanny may be responsible for: • planning activities to suit your child’s age • feeding, bathing and dressing him • changing nappies, or helping him use the potty or toilet • preparing meals for him • cleaning his room • washing and ironing his clothes and 24 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Could I use a relative for childcare? Many parents ask a grandparent or another relative to look after their children. Informal arrangements with relatives make up the majority of childcare arrangements. It’s low-cost and flexible, and it means your child will be looked after by someone he knows well in a familiar environment. Relative care works best if you have a good relationship with the relative, and if they’re willing and able to help. She’ll need to be happy to do things your way, so you may need to set out some ground rules.

30 Hours Free Childcare – Are you Getting All You Can? All 3 and 4-year-olds in England get 15 hours a week, or 570 hours a year of free early education. If their parents are living and working in England, 3 and 4-year-olds may be entitled to 30 hours free childcare. An extra 570 hours of free childcare a year, so 1140 hours in total. 30 hours free childcare was made available from September 2017. The eligibility criteria are the same as the ones for Tax-Free Childcare, except you can continue to get these types of support at the same time as 30 hours free childcare: • tax credits • Universal Credit • childcare vouchers or salary sacrifice schemes • childcare grants and bursaries When you apply, you’ll be confirming that you need childcare so that you and your partner, if you have one, can work. If your child’s already in a full-time reception class in a state funded school, you won’t be eligible for 30 hours free childcare. For more information or to check your eligibility visit www.gov.uk/childcare-calculator

Focus on Donington The village has one public house, The Black Bull. There is also a Coop and a Costcutter in the Market Place. Though Donington is on an operating passenger rail line with stopping services it has no station, and there has been no campaign to reopen the closed station, though in 2008 Hull Trains proposed reopening as a railhead to nearby Boston for a direct Lincoln to London service. Donington has football teams for two age groups: Old Doningtonians for over eighteens, and Young Dons (established in 1996) for anyone under that age; Old Dons play in the Saturday Boston League and Young Dons on a Sunday in the MidLincolnshire Junior League. There are two schools; the Donington Cowley Endowed Primary School, and the Thomas Cowley Academy with its four house system - Cowley, Flinders, Bass and Swift. For the children there is the Teen Skate Park for 11+, and the local park and playpark. Donington’s most notable resident is Captain Matthew Flinders RN (16 March 1774 – 19 July 1814) was an English

navigator and cartographer, who was the leader of the first circumnavigation of Australia and identified it as a continent. Flinders made three voyages to the southern ocean between 1791 and 1810. In the second voyage, George Bass and Flinders confirmed that Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania) was an island. In the third voyage, Flinders circumnavigated the mainland of what was to be called Australia, accompanied by Aboriginal man Bungaree. Heading back to England in 1803, Flinders’ vessel needed urgent repairs at Isle de France (Mauritius). Although Britain and France were at war, Flinders thought the scientific nature of his work would ensure safe passage, but a suspicious governor kept him under arrest for more than six years. In captivity, he recorded details of his voyages for future publication, and put forward his

rationale for naming the new continent ‘Australia’, as an umbrella term for New Holland and New South Wales – a suggestion taken up later by Governor Macquarie. Mother’s Day

Why do we celebrate

Mother’s Day?

The origins of Mother’s Day date back to the ancient Greek times. The ancient Greeks dedicated an annual spring festival to maternal goddesses, and ancient Romans also celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria which was for a mother goddess called Cybele. In the 16th century it was considered highly

important to return to the main church in the area, known as the mother church, at least once a year. Most people would do this in the middle of Lent and use the opportunity to see their families. It is believed children would pick flowers on the way home from church and give them to their mothers, which is why we give flowers today.

In the UK, Mother’s Day 2018 is being celebrated on Sunday, March 11. The day does not have a fixed date as it is linked to Easter, which is determined by the lunar calendar and changes annually. Mother’s Day always falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent and three weeks before Easter Sunday.

There are many ways you can show your mum how much you love and respect her this year, from the simplest hug and kiss to more elaborate gifts and tokens of your appreciation. Here we’ have thought of a few ways you might want to display how much you care for your mum........

Take Her Out For Lunch Gather up your family and friends and celebrate Mother’s Day with an extra special celebration at your mums favourite restaurant.

that your mum normally does. This is a great idea for getting the children involved, and could be accompanied by gifts they may have made at school for her.

Book Of Memories Modern technology has made it super Take Her Shopping easy to create your own professional looking Most women love shopping, and chances you’re looking to avoid cliche of books, so why not gather up as many photos areIf your mother is no different. Take her the roses, chocolates you of yourcould mum as possible and submit them to to some of her favourite stores, and and if cards, the anway online book budget stretches far enough, for a treat always choose anpay alternative to making and printing service. Memories are often the most precious on the day! mark it , like one of the following things we have, and to be able to recollect those by flipping the pages of a book Weekend Away dedicated to her would be extra special. Either pay for your mum to enjoy a weekend away with her husband, a friend Make A Home Video or by herself, or you can accompany her to Every camera and smartphone these days make it extra special. Think about what she has a built in video camera, so it’s easy to enjoys and find a retreat that fits such as gather friends and family to make a short yoga, spa treatments and art.

video of everyone telling her how much she means to them. Smartphone apps and free online tools makes editing a breeze. The most important thing for mothers is almost always their family and friends, so no matter what you do, try and incorporate this into the day as best you can. Putting some effort and thought into the day, and thinking about how you can make Mother’s Day unique to her, will show her how special she is to you and your family. For all mothers their number one concern is the welfare and happiness of their children and grandchildren, so on this special day of the year it’s important to turn the tables and make sure she is well looked after. While gifts are always appreciated, often a kiss and an ‘I love you’ is the best way to express how much you care, and is what she’ll remember long after the day is over.

Technology To Stay In Touch If your mother doesn’t live close by, and hasn’t organised an easy, efficient way to stay in touch, why not set up the latest technology. Maybe all she needs is someone to set up her Skype account, make sure her internet connection is strong, or connect a webcam to her computer, but whatever it is make it easy for her to stay in touch and see your face. Give Mum The Day Off This one is easy and doesn’t require any financial outlay. Start the day by making her breakfast in bed, and then do any chores www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 29

Making the Most of a

Home & Property

Compact Bathroom Some small bathrooms make you feel like you have to lose weight to enter them, but I really like working on this type of bathroom design. Trying to make everything fit in the available space is like doing a giant crossword puzzle. Among the challenges: configuring the toilet and sink, allowing enough clearance for a shower and, of course, where to put the towel rails and toilet roll holder? Despite the challenges, in most cases it’s still better to squeeze in an extra bathroom where one is desperately needed, even if it must be small. Here are our tips for designing a small bathroom.

Select a vanit y unit wit h one shelf

Sink unit design has got smarter. Even a pedestal style with one shelf can hold towels or a basket for toilet paper. I personally love the way fresh, clean towels look when folded neatly in a bathroom.

Float the vanit y unit

Besides just visually helping the bathroom appear bigger, mounting a vanity unit above the floor frees up a little space for small items underneath.

Install a corner sink

Sometimes even a pedestal sink can disrupt the only available traffic lane in a bathroom. In this case, placing a corner sink across from the toilet works better than a sink across from the shower. The opening and closing of the shower door usually creates an awkward walk-around situation.

Use a shower curtain

A shower curtain that moves back and forth

saves space over a glass door that moves in and out. Shower-tub combos actually can fit into small spaces, with some tubs coming in at just over 1.5 metres in length.

Use a large-scale pattern

A big pattern, can trick the eye into seeing expanded space. The size might stay the same, but the bathroom will feel bigger.

Skip the shower door

If your bathroom is about 1.5 metres wide, that’s just enough space to squeeze in a toilet and a 75cm by 1.5 metre tub. With tight conditions such as these, consider a glass panel instead of a glass shower door. It will keep water in the shower and free up needed elbow room.

Expand the mirror

In the tightest spaces, having a mirror stretch across the wall instead of just the vanity unit can enable two people to use it at once. In less-than-ideal space conditions,

every centimetre helps.

Mount the towel rail on a door

Where can I hang the towels? I wish I had a penny for every time I heard that question. When space is at a premium, mounting a towel rail on the shower door keeps towels handy. You might need to store the bulk of your towels in a nearby linen closet, but having that one towel close by is essential.

Install a trough sink

The narrow, clean styling of a trough sink is a good-looking space solution. Trough sinks have a low profile. When wall mounted, they free up floor space as well for storage or foot traffic.

Use a wall-mounted tap

Mounting a tap on the wall allows for a narrower sink or vanity unit, which in turn frees up square footage in the total bathroom. Don’t be afraid to try a wall-mounted tap in traditional design. It works anywhere!

Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDI quattro 218PS PROS ‘N’ CONS à Fast à Quiet à Kit à Ride à Thirsty

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS (3.0 TDI quattro 218PS)

F

itted with a 3.0 litre V6 engine, the latest Audi A4 Avant becomes almost too powerful for its own good. Don’t get me wrong; the diesel lump is a real pearl, but there’s no way it returns the claimed 57.6mpg when riding on 19-inch wheels. I found the car thirsty, and mid-30s was more realistic for me when driving twoup, with no luggage, on a mix of motorways, A and B-roads. The A4 estate model that Audi sent me came in top S line trim, and starts at £38,895, but with a few thousand pounds of options thrown at it, my test car was waving a £46,395 price-tag. You get a lot of kit for the cash, though and Audi is well-known for its upmarket, understated interiors that are both perfectly finished and intuitive. This A4 doesn’t dissatisfy; it has upscale materials everywhere and a straightforward, intelligible dashboard arrangement. Technology is plentiful, too. It includes: a reversing camera, parking sensors, three-zone climate control, heated electric seats, and a powered, hands-free boot.

The A4 Avant is among the best-looking estates on the market in Britain. It’s undeniably classy, and the large 3.0 litre diesel engine is so smooth that it feels more like a hard-hitting petrol unit. What’s more, indiscernible wind and road noise make the A4 the quietest cruiser in its class – by a long chalk. The ride is wonderful, and easily a match for BMW’s 3-series. The same goes for the car’s bob-on handling. This practical five-up estate comes with Audi’s standard seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox. It changes slickly, keeping the revs low except when Dynamic mode is selected. A moderate push of your right foot is all that’s required to build momentum hastily; stamp down hard, though and you’ll get to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds.
