Welcome to the May issue This year is zooming by, how are we heading to May already? May is my little boy’s birthday so we have a busy diary…his social life is better than mine! We are heading down South with friends to visit Peppa Pig World, wish me luck – we are ‘glamping’ so eight of us in two tents, is it appropriate to put all the kids in one and the adults in another for some peace and quiet?!!!! It’s so nice to have the lighter nights so we can be out enjoying the garden (and a pimms!) after work. My two are definitely in the ‘outdoorsy’ category so we have set up a little planting area for tomatoes, strawberries and a few plants too. In this issue we are looking into dental care as May is National Smile Month, we visit Holbeach to see what the town has to offer us and we celebrate Donut Week! Have you ever thought about expanding your family by giving a child in care a foster home? We have a small insight to what’s involved as during May there is Foster Care Fortnight to raise awareness of all the children needing a home to thrive and a bed to call their own. Tim this month is test driving the DS7, check out his review on page 44. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

Lincolnshire’s oldest resident to celebrate 110th Birthday Violet Davies-Evans will be celebrating her 110th birthday with a party at Ashwood Nursing and Care Home in Spalding on Friday 30th March at 2.30pm you are very welcome to come along on that day to take photos and speak to her family. A brief life history is below: Born in Sutterton in 1908, the third child of what was to be a family of four sisters and a brother, Violet Davies-Evans was brought up in Spalding. After leaving school she started work at Pennington’s before moving to Birmingham as a beautician at Marshall and Snelgroves. In the thirties she moved to London to work for Elizabeth Arden as a beauty specialist advising many influential clients on how to make the best of themselves. Violet was married to Hubert in 1938 and, though they would have liked to have a family that was not to be. At the outbreak of war Elizabeth Arden, herself,

offered her a job in America but she chose to stay in London. As well as her day job working as a PA to Christopher Hinton, (Baron Hinton of Bankside) in the Ministry of Supply she was regularly to be found fire-watching on the roofs of the capital. After the war Violet, her husband and two dogs moved to Oxfordshire where he became the very charismatic head of a school in a large hospital. They enjoyed a busy social life entertaining friends and she was able to demonstrate her wide range of cooking skills as well as the love her of antiques, painting and tapestry work. Sadly, soon after his retirement in 1975, her husband died and, having too large a property to look after on her own, she moved back to Lincolnshire, sharing a house in Osbournby with her also widowed sister, May, and getting fully involved in village life including the WI. After the death of her sister she moved back to Spalding where she has lived

independently until 2014 when she decided that she needed more care and moved into Ashwood Nursing and Care Home.

News Spalding Actor Wins Prestigious Award Spalding raised actor/comedian Pip Swallow has picked up a prestigious award for her TV show pilot, the premise for a series she is working on that will be set in London and Lincolnshire. The pilot will also be screening at the Pilot Light Television Festival in Manchester this May. Pip Swallow won Best Pilot at last month’s Debbie Awards, part of The Edinburgh International TV Festival for her show, Great Expectations, based on Dickens’ famous novel. Set in London and Lincolnshire, the dark comedy show follows Pip, a loveless, jobless woman, leaving London to seek a more meaningful life in the Midlands, by way of working in Havisham Homes, a care home for the elderly. Pip said: “I’m delighted to have won this prestigious award for top new talent. It’s amazing

to be recognised by industry professionals and I hope the pilot will be picked up by TV executives for a full series run.” She added,”Showing up in Manchester will be a wonderful opportunity to see an audience respond to the pilot for the first time. It’s so exciting to find out what people think of it!” The Edinburgh International Television Festival is the biggest festival of its kind in Europe, celebrating creators of television and digital media programming and attracts a star-studded line-up each year, with the likes of Charlie Brooker, Ricky Gervais and Armando Iannucci all having taken part in the festival. The Pilot Light Festival features pilot and web series competitors from around the world. This year special guests will include Christopher Eccleston

and Julie Hesmondhalgh. Great Expectations will be showing on 5th May at 2pm at HOME in Manchester and tickets are available at http://www.pilotlightfestival.co.uk/ season-3-events

Spalding Author Shortlisted for Award Spalding author among contenders for RNA’s Joan Hessayon Award for New Writers Spalding author Jane Lacey-Crane is among the contenders for The Romantic Novelists’ Association’s (RNA) prestigious Joan Hessayon Award for new writers, for her novel Secrets and Tea at Rosie Lee’s, published by Aria Fiction. The shortlist is made up of authors whose debut novels have been accepted for publication after passing through the Romantic Novelists’ Association New Writers’ Scheme. Each year 250 places are offered to unpublished writers writing in the romantic fiction genre. As part of the scheme, they can submit a complete manuscript for critique by one of the Association’s published authors as well as attend RNA events which offer opportunities to meet and network with publishers, agents and other published authors. This year’s competing novels include historical romance, paranormal romance, contemporary romance and romantic comedy, and explore a variety of themes which include family, secrets and loss. Jane Lacey-Crane’s Secrets and Tea at Rosie Lee’s, set in London’s East End, follows the story of Abby Cowan. Approaching 40 and fighting a serious case of ‘empty nest syndrome’, Abby is a woman without a plan. At a time of upheaval, she’s faced with ghosts from her past and another chance at love. If she’s brave enough to take it. Jane Lacey-Crane grew up in East London, and many of the characters in the book were inspired by people she grew up with. Commenting on the contenders for 2018, Nicola Cornick, current RNA Chairman, said, “The RNA is particularly proud of its New Writers’ Scheme, which is unique to the association, and helps new

writers on that difficult path to publication. In recent years we’ve had an excellent success rate and this year is no exception with seventeen debut novelists graduating from the scheme. Having read every last one of them, I’m delighted to see a new generation of talent being fostered by the scheme.” Imogen Howson, who runs the New Writers’ Scheme, commented, “It is wonderful to see debut authors graduating from the New Writers Scheme and we are ever grateful to Dr. David Hessayon who continues to support the Awards in honour of his late wife, Joan.” The Award will be presented at the RNA Summer Party on Thursday 17th May at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The Joan Hessayon Award is generously sponsored by gardening expert Dr. David Hessayon OBE, in honour of his late wife Joan, who was a longstanding member of the RNA and a great supporter of its New Writers’ Scheme. The New Writers’ Scheme has been run by the RNA since 1962 and is unique among professional writing associations. It aims to encourage fresh talent in the writing of romantic novels that reflect all aspects of love and life, contemporary or historical. Manuscripts submitted under the scheme are from unpublished authors and are read by an experienced writer or editor who provides invaluable feedback. Any manuscript that is subsequently published as a debut novel is eligible for the Joan Hessayon Award. All eligible books are judged by a panel of experienced RNA members who are already published authors, and this year the final round judge is Emma Milne-White, owner of the award-winning Hungerford Bookshop, former COSTA book awards judge, and a director of Arts for Hungerford.

Nick’s Notes

T

here has been some speculation in the local press about Anglian Water’s Water Resources Management Plan 2019 that has just gone out to consultation - a vast 590 page document with numerous other documents attached. Fortunately there is a summary document as well! Buried in the depths of the document in an innocuous looking map showing a a blue triangle representing a reservoir not far short of the size of Grafham Water, ‘in South Lincolnshire’. Speculation as the exact location is understandably causing concern not least for potential landowners, but councils and environmentalists as well. I think we would all accept the need to store more water, even at a time when it seems to be endlessly raining. Water Resources East (a range of partners formed to safeguard a sustainable supply of water to the East of England), clearly states that we are the driest region in the UK. To quote from their website “The East faces a number of significant risks to its future water supply, which could have a catastrophic impact on the area’s communities, economy and environment if left unchecked.” Significantly more housing over the next twenty years will have a massive effect and be a huge drain ( excuse the pun!) on existing water resources in the future. More intensive farming to provide the food we need for an increasing population, factories and the processes to prepare that food for the supermarket will all need more water, in an area that is getting much less rainfall along with the uncertainties in our climate caused by climate change. Many farmers are already creating their own small reservoirs to ensure their crops are kept watered during dry spells, meeting the growing demand in our area for greens, such as lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower and kale and a multitude of other crops and flowers. To be fair to Anglian Water they have I understand a number of options when it

comes to location and that will depend on geological surveys aligned to the position of existing waterways such as the Welland, The River Glen and the South Forty Foot Drain in particular, when it comes to a South Lincolnshire location. They are simply planning ahead, but it might have helped if they were aligned to our own (South East Lincolnshire) 20 year local plan of which there is no mention in their documents. What is important when they decide on a location is how they build and design it. It clearly needs to add value to the area, whether that is for tourism, leisure, environmental or wildlife reasons and therefore providing a real benefit to the local economy. Building above ground as is one suggestion, could mean embankments 15metres high, which would not be just unsightly but have potential flooding implications for the surrounding area and although storing a vast amount of much needed water, would add virtually nothing to the local area. Please have a look on Anglian Water’s website at the consultation where you are encouraged to submit your views. It is not the easiest of reading, but well worth a look.

Advice

Claim compensation if your flight’s delayed or cancelled

Citizens Advice

...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems

If you booked a flight that departed from Europe or was with a European airline, you might have rights under EU law if your flight is delayed or cancelled. For the EU law to apply, you’ll need to have departed from the UK, European Union (EU), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland If your flight’s delayed for 2 or more hours If your flight’s delayed for 2 or more hours Your airline have to give you: • food and drink • access to phone calls and emails • accommodation if you’re delayed overnight - and journeys between the airport and the hotel The airline should give you vouchers to get these things at the airport. Ask someone who works for the airline if you’re not offered any help. If they don’t give you help at the airport, keep receipts for expenses and try to claim from the airline later. Airlines only pay for ‘reasonable’ expenses - you won’t get money back for alcohol, expensive meals or luxury hotels. If your flight’s delayed for 3 or more hours You already have a legal right to food and drink, phone calls and accommodation - you get this when the flight is delayed for 2 hours or more. You’re also entitled to get compensation if the delay is the airline’s responsibility - for example, if they didn’t get enough bookings or there was a technical fault. You won’t get compensation if it was delayed because of something like bad weather or a strike. You’re entitled to a set amount of compensation depending on: • the distance of the flight - check the flight distance on the WebFlyer website • the length of the delay - how late you are

getting to your destination • whether you’re flying to an EU or non-EU destination You have to claim from the airline to get compensation. Search their website or call their customer services department. If your flight’s delayed for 5 hours or more You don’t have to take the flight if it’s delayed for 5 hours or more. It doesn’t matter whose responsibility the delay is. If you don’t take the flight The airline legally has to give you all of the following: • a full refund for the flight • a full refund for other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking, eg an onward or return flight • if you’re part-way through a journey, a flight back to the airport you originally departed from • food and drink • access to phone calls and emails • accommodation if you’re delayed overnight, as well as journeys between the airport and the hotel Talk to someone from the airline as soon as you decide you don’t want to take the flight. If you do take the flight You can claim up to €600 in compensation if the delay is the airline’s responsibility depending on the distance and destination of your flight. It might have been your airline’s fault if there was a technical fault, or they overbooked. You won’t get compensation if it was

delayed because of something like bad weather or a strike. If your flight is cancelled You have the legal right to either: • a full refund - including other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking such as onward or return flights • a replacement flight to get you to your destination Ask for a refund or replacement at the airport if you can. If not, you can claim from the airline later. You also have a legal right to: • help with costs - if the cancellation delays you 2 or more hours • compensation - if you’d be delayed 2 or more hours by the replacement flight offered Claim from the airline Contact the airline – this needs to be the airline operating the flight, even if you booked it through another airline. The airline’s customer services department will usually help. Be ready to give all your flight details and booking reference numbers. Write your claim – say what went wrong and what you want the airline to give you. The Civil Aviation Authority has information about how to write a good claim and you can download a template letter from the Which? website. Include copies (not originals) of your tickets and any receipts. Keep records – keep copies of your claim and any response from the airline. Take notes if you speak to anyone from the airline - this could be useful if you decide to take your claim further.

School News

Weston Hills School Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?

Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

At the end of Term 3 children performed, ‘Around the world in Eighty Minutes’, an adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ to enthusiastic and appreciative parents/carers and relatives. There were three performances. Each class learnt songs from their allocated continent and the older children took key acting roles. This is always a fantastic event for the whole school community to enjoy and thanks to Mr. Gernert from Act II for his fantastic organisation and vision.

We are continuing to fundraise for replacements to the “trim trail” and are ready to start phase one of the project. The children have all given their views on the type of equipment they would like—we now have the difficult task of meeting at least some of their expectations! Children are looking forward to a visit Shona McCallin, Olympic gold medalist from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio who will be visiting on 27th April – she was a member of the Great Britain women’s national field hockey team.

Ayscoughfee Hall School The new Friday ‘Forest School’ activities began with Reception, Year 1 and Year 3 children busy building dens, cooking over open fires and hatching penguin eggs! Kindergarten, Year 2 and Year 3 look forward to their turn after the Easter holidays (not least because it will hopefully be warmer!) The cold weather and snow did not stop the indefatigable PTFA from holding their annual Ball, with this year’s theme of ‘Havana Nights’ contrasting strangely with sub-zero temperatures outside. Everyone thoroughly

enjoyed themselves and cheques were presented to ‘Keep the Beat’, a charity for children with heart defects as well as to the school. Year 2 children and their parents had a wonderful day in London as part of their ‘Great Fire of London’ topic. They visited the Museum of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Pudding Lane and The Monument. All the Early Years and Infants were made very welcome at Baytree when they went to see ‘Alice in Wonderland’ .

In sport, the children continued to play very well, excelling at netball and football, and we were pleased to host our annual Cross Country Running competition. The whole school, staff and many parents and younger siblings ‘Walked a Mile’ for Sport’s Relief. We also found time to dress up for World Book Day and were delighted to welcome Tom Palmer, a prolific author, who kept the children entertained with talks on how he gets inspiration for his books, researches and writes them.

Pinchbeck Penguins Playgroup The committee at Pinchbeck Penguins Playgroup are pleased to announce that we will be holding our first ever Spring Fair on Saturday 5th May 2018. Come along and join us at the Baptist Church on Knight Street, Pinchbeck between 11am and 1pm. There will be a variety of indoor

and outdoor stalls and activities including a BBQ, refreshments, raffle, homemade cake stall, pocket money stall, plant stall, crafts and games for the children (and their grownups!) to enjoys plus many more!! Please come along and support us as we raise funds for our wonderful playschool.

National Bike to School Day

T

he first-ever National Bike to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. Almost 1,000 local events in 49 states and the District of Columbia joined together to encourage children to safely bicycle or walk to school. The event is now making it’s way over to the UK and will be celebrated on May 9 this year.

The event builds on the popularity of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the world each October. Many communities and schools have been holding spring walk and bicycle to school events for years. National Bike to School Day provides an opportunity for schools across the globe to join together to celebrate and to build off of the energy of National Bike Month. thefosteringnetwork.org.uk where you can find a whole host of information.

Health benefits of regular cycling Cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level.

The health benefits of regular cycling include: • increased cardiovascular fitness • increased muscle strength and flexibility • improved joint mobility • decreased stress levels • improved posture and coordination • strengthened bones • decreased body fat levels • prevention or management of disease • reduced anxiety and depression.

Foster Care Fortnight May 14 to May 27

F

oster Care Fortnight is the UK’s biggest foster care awareness raising campaign, delivered by leading fostering charity, The Fostering Network. Established for almost 20 years, the campaign showcases the commitment, passion and dedication of foster carers. It also supports fostering services to highlight the need for more foster carers. Thousands of new foster families are needed every year to care for children, with the greatest need being for foster carers for older children, sibling groups, disabled children and unaccompanied asylum seeking children. Foster Care Fortnight is a time to challenge the myths and misconceptions about fostering. One of the aims of Foster Care Fortnight is to raise the profile of fostering and the transformational power of foster care. Could you foster? Every year, tens of

thousands of children across the UK need foster carers while they can’t live with their own families. That means thousands of new foster carers are needed every year. Could you be one of them? There is nothing quite like fostering if you want to work with children. Working from home, it’s possible to combine fostering with caring for your own children, or to combine fostering and other work, depending on the age and needs of the children in your care. There are many different types of fostering, and each foster carer chooses what is right for them and their family. In addition to practical support, all foster carers receive an allowance to cover the cost of looking after a fostered child. Some also receive a fee for the work that they do. Throughout their fostering career, foster carers can take advantage of continued professional development. In addition,

a range of roles is available within many fostering services, such as helping with recruitment of new foster carers or running support groups. A wider pool of foster carers is needed right across the UK, so children can live with a family in their local area wherever possible. It’s important that children live with families that are a good “match” for them, in terms of location, culture, lifestyle, language, and interests. More foster carers are

currently needed to offer homes to teenagers, disabled children, sibling groups and unaccompanied asylumseeking children. Foster carers have a unique chance to make a real difference to a child’s life, supporting them and working to help them develop and achieve their potential. If this sounds like something you would like to find out more about, visit www. thefosteringnetwork.org.uk where you can find a whole host of information.

W

hen I was a little girl, I used to look at the stars in the night sky with my Dad. We would look out of my bedroom window across the fields and he would tell me stories about the different constellations. One day, he asked me how many stars there were, and although I don’t remember the answer I gave him, it would have been something like hundreds or thousands. What he said to me has stayed with me my whole life and in one sentence, changed my view of the world forever (although I didn’t know it at the time). He said, “how about just one star and a thousand mirrors”. At the time, I thought he was plain crazy. Of course there weren’t mirrors hanging in the sky! Of course there were thousands of stars! I’m not sure how I knew this, but I was certain that I was right, and he was wrong. Little did I know how wrong I could be. What I have come to learn from that conversation is not anything to do with astronomy, physics or science. It’s to do with soul. The connection between the soul, the universe, birth and death. The connection between me and midwifery. Nearly all the atoms that make up our bodies were created beyond the Milky Way. In every one of us, the universe is present, and we are all present in the universe. We are the same thing. We are

travellers on a cosmic journey. Stardust, swirling and dancing in infinity, stopped for just a moment to meet, to love, to share. In loving other people, new life is born and as women bring life into the world, they birth and rebirth the universe. When I look up to the same night sky and talk to my son about the stars and his place in the universe, I cannot fail to feel the perspective of how tiny we are. The circle of life; of birth (of which I see a lot), of death (of which I see more than you might realise), the two doors into and out of this world, I am reminded of how little time we have on this earth and how much time we waste worrying about things that are out of our control. If one star can be reflected a thousand times and create a night sky, anything is possible. We can create for ourselves any life that we want. It is only our blinkered thinking that holds us on the path we currently walk. This Bank Holiday weekend, I encourage you to spend some time outside looking at the stars. Use their reflection to see your own life with more perspective and decide what it is you need to do to better find your place. My Dad showed me the way to think beyond what is visible with my own eyes and not to be afraid to take the path less travelled. Sometimes, wandering off the path and getting lost is the best way to be found.

Village

Tails By Jo Wright

Put your best paw forward! It’s time to take a tour of one of our beautiful surrounding villages with a well-loved Labrador.

T

his month enjoy the sights and sniffs of Weston, courtesy of Otis; a Weston resident with a love of walking, wagging and wolfing down dinner. My paws are familiar with Weston’s paths. There’s not a hedge I haven’t stuck my handsome snout under and sniffed. But I must tell you, the smells are changing. Spring is in the air. Where there were fallen leaves, I now find snowdrops, crocuses, yellow aconites - and best of all – daffodils! When I look upwards I see pink blossom budding, and even a glimmer of sun making my black coat shine. It won’t be long before I can roll on a sunny patch of grass and feel warm, rather than my fur ending up damp and covered in mud, leaves and the odd wiggly worm. Strolling past people kennels (I think they’re called ‘houses’) there are bursts of brightness at my eye-level, thanks to carefully planted pots full of violas and pansies. Higher up are pops of colour courtesy of hanging baskets. Soon when I sniff the air I will be lucky enough to smell the sweet, subtle scent of roses floating from my village’s rosegrowers. It’s nice to appreciate nature. I stroll past the village hall. I wouldn’t mind a go at Yoga and badminton. I could even try

short mat bowls. I wonder if they mean bowls full of food? If so I’d excel at that. And look! There’s the park my two-legged puppy friends love so much (I think they’re called ‘children’). If you want to slide, swing and scream on a sunny day, they tell me it’s just the place. Soon the mud will dry, the clouds will clear and we will be able to go outside without our human and doggy winter coats. Spring will come, my friends, but I’ll make the most of everyday – whatever the season.

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

The Man Behind Our Namesake School

W

illiam Stukeley (7 November 1687 – 3 March 1765) was an English antiquarian, physician, and Anglican clergyman. He pioneered the archaeological investigation of the prehistoric monuments of Stonehenge and Avebury. Born in Holbeach, Lincolnshire as the son of a lawyer, Stukeley worked in his father’s law business before attending Bene’t College, Cambridge. In 1709 he began studying medicine at St Thomas’s, Southwark, before working as a general practitioner in Boston, Lincolnshire. From 1710 until 1725 he embarked on annual tours of the countryside, seeking out archaeological monuments and other features that interested him; he wrote up and published several accounts of his travels. In 1717, he returned to London and established himself within the city’s antiquarian circles. In 1718 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and became the first secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of London. In 1721 he became a Freemason and in 1722 co-founded the Society of Roman Knights, an organisation devoted to the study of Roman Britain. In the early 1720s, Stukeley developed a particular interest in Stonehenge and Avebury, two prehistoric stone circles in Wiltshire. He visited them repeatedly, undertaking archaeological fieldwork to determine their dimensions. In 1726 Stukeley relocated to Grantham, Lincolnshire, where he married. In 1729 he was ordained as a cleric in the Church of England and appointed vicar of All Saints’ Church in Stanford, Kent. He was a friend

of the Archbishop of Canterbury William Wake, who encouraged him to use his antiquarian studies to combat the growth of deism and Freethought in Britain. To this end, he developed the belief that Britain’s ancient druids had followed a monotheistic religion inherited from the Biblical Patriarchs; he called this druidic religion “Patriarchal Christianity”. He further argued that the druids had erected the stone circles as part of serpentine monuments symbolising the Trinity. He was instrumental in British scholarship’s acceptance of Charles Bertram’s forged Description of Britain. A friend of Isaac Newton, he was also among Newton’s first biographers. In 1747 he returned to London as rector of St George the Martyr, Holborn. He has been described as “probably ... the most important of the early forerunners

of the discipline of archaeology” for his practice of personally visiting and examining ancient sites. is now the highest, oldest and bestpreserved lead spire in England and possibly Europe:

Funerals

Dying Matters 2018: Let’s Talk About it Dying Matters is a broad based and inclusive national Coalition set up and led by the National Council for Palliative Care (NCPC) until July 2017 when NCPC merged with Hospice UK. The aim is to support the implementation of the Department of Health’s End of Life Care Strategy. The Coalition’s mission is to promote awareness and support changing knowledge, attitudes and behaviours towards dying, death and bereavement, and through this to make a ‘good death’ the norm.

T

he Coalition is made up of over 32,000 members. This includes organisations from across the NHS and the voluntary and independent health and care sectors, including hospices, care homes, charities supporting old people, children and bereavement, from social care and housing sectors, from a wide range of faith organisations, community organisations, schools and colleges, academic bodies, trade unions, the legal profession and from the funeral sector. Working together, members of the Dying Matters Coalition are encouraging people to talk about their wishes towards the end of their lives, including where they want to die and their funeral plans with friends, family and loved ones. Why has the Coalition been set up? The End of Life Care Strategy, published by the Department of Health in 2008, identified a number of significant issues affecting dying and death in England: • Some people die as they would have wished, but many

do not. Many people do not die in the place they would choose to, many do not receive quality care at the end of their lives and there are reports that people have not been treated with dignity and respect • In the past, the profile of end of life care across the NHS and across society has been relatively low, leading to variability in access to and the quality of end of life care across the country and in different communities • People are uncomfortable talking about dying and death, meaning that when they come to the end of their lives friends and loved ones are not aware of their preferences The Dying Matters Coalition is part of a wider drive to ensure that all people have access to high quality care and support at the end of their lives, helping people to attain ‘a good death’. This involves improving service provision across the NHS; but to be successful, the attitudes and behaviour of people across society need to change. Dying Matters was set up to promote and support this process. Where do people want to die? There is a major mismatch between people’s preferences for where they would like to die and their actual place of death. Our research shows that around 70% of people would prefer to die at home, yet around 60% currently die in hospital. Does Dying Matters support hospice care? Yes. Dying Matters fully supports hospice care as it sets

26 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

a gold standard that needs replicating in care homes, hospitals and all settings. What is Dying Matters Awareness Week? The highlight of the Dying Matters Coalition’s calendar is Dying Matters Awareness Week. The Awareness Week involves a programme of events to mark the occasion and is being supported by a national PR and media campaign. Coalition members are supporting Dying Matters Awareness Week in a wide variety of ways, in many places with support from the national Coalition. Why should I talk about death? Isn’t it morbid? Not at all. We all live and we all die, and life is something to be celebrated through to death. Talking about dying and death is something people understandably feel uncomfortable about, but it is something we all need to do - otherwise we, or our loved ones, may not die in the way we want. Talking about dying does not make it happen, or happen faster. Not talking about dying and death has many unwanted consequences: • If relatives and loved ones do not know a person’s preferences, they may make decisions about care the dying person does not want • Close relatives may be unaware of how best to help and support a person who is approaching death • Those nearing death may feel isolated, distressed or frightened, which can impact on the level of pain they experience

• People may die without writing a will, or relatives may be unsure about funeral wishes When you say that people need to discuss their end of life preferences, what exactly is meant by this? Dying Matters is encouraging people to communicate their preferences for the end of their lives – broadly, this corresponds to the following questions: • Where do you want to die? – at home, in a hospice, in a hospital, in a care home, or somewhere else? • When you are approaching the end of your life, is there anything you want to do? – do you have a ‘bucket list?’ • When you are approaching the end of your life, how do you want to be cared for? – what medical support do you want? Are there any medical procedures or treatments you don’t want? Do you have a preference for who cares for you? Do you want any spiritual support (i.e. support related to meaning and purpose, whether you are religious or non-religious)? • After you have died, what do you want to happen? – what sort of funeral do you want? Do you want your organs to be donated to help others to live? Do you want to donate your body to science? Have you made a will, is it up to date and where is it?

Funeral

M

any British funeral traditions and customs that are still alive and thriving today date back to the Victorian era. It was at this time that society developed strict codes of conduct in how a person should be mourned and how their life should be celebrated.

Despite the fact that funerals are undergoing a fundamental change, with many people viewing them as a celebration of a person’s life, rather than the mourning of their death.

Wakes It is customary to hold a wake, this event is kind of like a small party and is designed to celebrate the life of the deceased. The wake is usually hosted at the house of the deceased’s immediate family, though it can also be hosted at a local pub or hotel. Something that often ends up happening is the telling of old stories. Family members and friends of the person that died usually share fond memories of their loved one. Although wakes are a sad occasion, they provide a chance for families to reunite and remember the good times.

Business Focus

Dying Matters Awareness Week What Can You Do?

There are two inevitable events in our lives; birth and death. The first, we plan for and celebrate. The second, it feels easier to ignore. Every death affects people differently. We’re often too polite to ask for help or don’t offer for fear of saying the wrong thing. We might be unsure of our loved ones’ wishes or be in the dark about their administrative affairs. It’s all understandable. Death is a difficult subject. So, what can you do? The answer is simple – it all starts with talking. Dying Matters awareness week from 14th to 20th May is a national campaign aiming to get everyone thinking about bereavement and breaking down barriers by getting your

thoughts out into the open. Lincolnshire Co-op’s funeral homes are taking part by running a series of interactive coffee mornings and drop-in events. They’re a chance for you to ask all those unanswered questions you’ve been too shy to tackle and to meet our friendly, sympathetic and professional colleagues. It’s also an opportunity to mull over your future wishes such as; what’s on your bucket list? Would you like to be buried or cremated? What music would you like at your funeral? There’s a huge range of personal touches you can add to a ceremony these days. So, whether it’s Elvis singing Love Me Tender and a motorcycle hearse or a decorated eco-cardboard coffin and an all-yellow dress

code, you can let your loved ones know now. One way of recording such wishes is through a Lincolnshire Co-op funeral plan. It’s also a good way of paying for your funeral in advance, giving your family peace of mind and one less thing to handle when the time comes. Instead of insurance policies and over 50s plans - which may not cover the average cost of a funeral - a Lincolnshire Co-op funeral plan makes sure that whenever you come to use it, the full cost is covered if the requirements haven’t changed. Got you thinking? You can discuss all of this and much more at our Spalding, Holbeach and Long Sutton Dying Matters sessions – we look forward to meeting you there.

National Smile Month I

n a nutshell, National Smile Month is the UK’s largest and longestrunning campaign to promote good oral health. Together, with thousands of individuals and organisations, National Smile Month highlights three key messages, all of which go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth. They are: • Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste. • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks. • Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. The aim of National Smile Month is to ultimately improve the UK’s oral health. Organised by oral health charity, the Oral Health Foundation, the campaign hopes to raise awareness of important health issues, and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions. With the help and enthusiasm of those who are passionate about health and

wellbeing, National Smile Month 2018 hopes to see thousands of events and activities up and down the UK educate and engage local communities about the importance of a healthy mouth. In 2018, the campaign will take place between 14 May and 14 June, and will encourage all dental and health

Tips for a Healthy Mouth Good oral health can have so many wonderful life-changing benefits. From greater self-confidence to better luck in careers and relationships, a healthy smile can truly transform your visual appearance, the positivity of your mind-set, as well as improving the health of not only your mouth but your body too. •Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste. • Clean in between your teeth at least once a day using interdental brushes or floss. • To check if you have bad breath lick your wrist, let it dry and give it a sniff, if it smells your breath probably does too. • If you use mouthwash don’t use it directly after brushing as you rinse away the fluoride from your toothpaste. • Quit smoking to help reduce the chances of tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss, and in more severe cases mouth cancer. • Make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride; it helps strengthen tooth enamel making it more resistant to decay. • Change your toothbrush every two to three months or sooner if it becomes worn as it will not clean the teeth properly.

professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges and workplaces – in fact anyone with an interest in good oral healthcare, to join in and help us educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improves the quality of smiles all around the UK.

Children’s Oral Health • Weaning your baby off the bottle early can help them avoid developing dental problems. • All children up to three years old, should use a smear of toothpaste with a fluoride level of no less than 1000ppm (parts per million). After three years old, they should use a toothpaste that contains 1350ppm -1500ppm.

smells of a dental practice. • Use a timer or brush along to a song to ensure your children are brushing for the correct amount of time. • Use a reward chart to track your children’s brushing habits and get them actively involved in brushing their teeth.

• Parents should try and supervise your children’s tooth brushing until they are about 7 years old. • Take your child to the dentist early, as soon as their teeth start to appear, this will help them get used to the sights, sounds and

• Use disclosing tablets to show areas of your children’s mouth which may need better brushing.

Hurrah! Ice Cube Tricks It’s National for Summer Doughnut Week

N

ational Doughnut Week is a very special week where businesses including bakers, coffee shops, offices and educational establishments take part and sell lots of delicious doughnuts to raise funds for The Children’s Trust. The week, sponsored by CSM Bakery Solutions, has been running for 27 years, after being launched in 1991 by independent baker, Christopher Freeman. Last year National Doughnut Week raised over £26,500 with the help of hundreds of independent bakers, cafes and shops who sold delicious doughnuts for charity. The Children’s Trust provides rehabilitation to children and young people with acquired brain injury at their national specialist centre in Surrey, helping them make the best recovery possible after a serious incident or illness. The charity is also home to an expert multidisciplinary team who offer a nationwide community service that supports children and young people with acquired brain injury following an accident of illness. The centre is also home to one of the only specialist schools in the UK dedicated to providing

education, therapy and care exclusively for children and young people aged 3-19 with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). They also support a range of neurological conditions and complex medical needs through our residential and day placements. Recently The Children’s Trust has started campaigning and aims to be an active voice for children and families affected by brain injury and neurodisability, speaking out on their behalf and empowering them to share their experiences

These clever flavored cubes will enhance your drinks when melting rather than watering beverages down. Ice is nice in the summertime, what with it being cold and all. The downside? It melts. Which is bad when you think of the weak, watery mess at the bottom of your iced latte cup. But if you use flavored cubes instead of water-based ones, suddenly the melting becomes a strategic way to change and improve your drinks.

Get Your Fruity Fix Peach Nectar Cubes: Drop a square into a glass of Prosecco for a reverse Bellini. Apple Juice Cubes: Add to a pitcher of cut-up fruit and wine — white and red both work — for an easy sangria. Coconut Water Cubes: Rev up a glass of mango nectar with cubes of this ubiquitous thirstquencher. Or use them to serve rum “on the rocks.”

Savoury Sippers Beer Cubes: Chill down your favorite pint. Because the only thing better than beer is more beer. Pickle Juice Cubes: An irresistible addition to a pitcher of Bloody Marys Olive Brine Cubes: Drop a small cube into a glass of vodka or gin for the ultimate dirty martini. Tomato Juice Cubes: Keep a mug of gazpacho perfectly chilled even on a sweltering day.

Sweeten the Season Condensed Milk Cubes: Add to iced tea or iced chai for a cheater’s version of the ubersweet Thai iced tea. Chocolate Milk Cubes: Turn iced coffee into a cool mochalatta with a few chocolatey cubes; whizzing up in the blender, optional. Whipped Cream Cubes: Float these fluffy squares in chocolate milk for a summerfied version of hot chocolate. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 33

Honeypot Day Nursery & Pre-school

J

ust over 10 years ago, the local authority built a new school building for Weston Hills C of E Primary School and little did I know that when leaving the old school, my passing comment of ‘This building would make a good nursery and preschool’ would result in actually doing it. There have been up and downs along the way, but many more ‘ups’ than ‘downs! After a protracted purchase period, we finally owned the building and, with 4 members of staff and eight children, opened our doors in April 2008. Honeypot Day Nursery and Pre-school now has approximately 75 under 5’s on roll, together with 47 school children who attend various out of school sessions and 16 members of staff. As parents ourselves, we recognise the importance of providing high quality, affordable childcare in a local community. Our primary aims are: • To provide the highest quality standards in care and development through the creation of a warm, caring and stimulating environment. • To provide the best opportunity for each child to develop socially, physically, emotionally and educationally at their own rate as individuals. • To maintain close working relationships with parents, ensuring we work in partnership with the child’s best interests at the heart of everything we do. • To ensure children leave Honeypot with the necessary skills for the next step in their life as they start school. • For everyone to feel happy, safe and valued. We recognise that sending a child to Honeypot is usually the child’s first experience of care and education outside of the home and we aim to make it a happy and memorable one. We maintain records of every child’s achievements at the nursery, which are available for parents to access on-line with many, many pictures. Parents can contribute to this record and it therefore develops into a learning journey covering the whole period the child is with us, for parents to keep when the child leaves. Our staff are well qualified with a variety of qualifications from EYPS to Level

3. We usually take apprentices who will all be working towards achieving a level 3 qualification. We feel passionate about our role and expect high standards from each and every one of our team. The staff team is fabulous and many staff are also parents themselves. Children need to play, and we plan learning opportunities that are both fun and stimulating, aiming to develop enquiring minds. Children enjoy a variety of activities, both indoors and out – in all weathers! They may come home with works of art for the fridge, a beautiful building (from cardboard boxes) or cakes. Sometimes they come home with nothing, but they will have had a great time and developed new skills from the things they have done. We have a lot of singing and movement and during the summer we encourage parents to join us for ‘sports day’ – I use the term loosely! We have trips out, Christmas parties, visitors in (police, reptiles, ceramic painting) graduations, leavers and parents’ parties. Honeypot Day Nursery takes funded

children from 2 years old, where parents meet government set criteria. All 3 and 4 year old children can receive funded care for up to 15 hours per week during the school term (or a lower number stretched over the year) from the term after they turn 3. From September 2017, 3 and 4 year olds with working parents, may be entitled to receive a further 15 hours per week – taking the total to 30. We are happy to show you around our nursery, and talk to you about your childcare needs. For more information call: 01406 380803, email: office@ honeypotdaynursery.com or see our website www.honeypotdaynursery.com

Childcare from 6 weeks to 11 years, based in Weston Hill Funded places for 3 & 4 year olds and 2 year olds, depe on certain criteria. Our highly qualified staff work closely with parents for benefit of your children. Before/after school & holiday care offered.

Top Tips For Financing Your Growing Business Growing businesses will have many day to day challenges including managing their finances during a time of rapid change. My top three tips for finances in a growing business are: Have a budget. A budget is a living document that should be updated as situations change and being up to date will allow for you to have the necessary resource in place whether that be money, people or goods. The budget should focus on the critical figures in the business and be realistic to take account of changes in income and costs. Keep your records up to date. Having up to date information in a format which is accessible will be essential to the

business owner’s ability to react to changes in the business and plan for the future. There are many cloud based systems such as Xero which remove much of the manual inputting required and allowing the business owner to access information from anywhere and see the important numbers in dashboard format. Making use of this technology will free up time and cost to concentrate on the success and growth of the business. Report regularly These reports should be at least monthly

and would normally take the form of management accounts which, as a minimum, include a trading account and balance sheet. All businesses will also have important key performance indicators (KPIs) which are crucial to the success of the business. It can also be useful to have someone independent of the day to day running of the business to be involved in this process who can stand back and give impartial advice. To obtain expert advice and guidance for your business please contact Duncan & Toplis.

Do I need

Permission for An Extension? Whilst we would of course always recommend consulting with expert architects and discussing any plans with the local council’s planning department, if you are thinking of extending your home the process may be simpler than you think! This guide has been taken from planningportal.co.uk where you can find lots of information on planning. This guide is a snapshot so please do your own homework before taking on a project. This guidance reflects temporary increases to the size limits for single-storey rear extensions that must be completed by 30 May 2019, and the associated neighbour consultation scheme. An extension or addition to your house is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions: • No more than half the area of land around the “original house”* would be covered by additions or other buildings. • No extension forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway. • No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof. • Single-storey rear extension must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house* by more than three metres if an attached house or by four metres if a detached house. • In addition, outside Article 2(3) designated land* and Sites of Special Scientific Interest the limit is increased to 6m if an attached house and 8m if a detached house until 30 May 2019. • These increased limits (between 3m and

6m and between 4m and 8m respectively) are subject to the prior notification of the proposal to the Local Planning Authority and the implementation of a neighbour consultation scheme. If objections are received, the proposal might not be allowed. • Maximum height of a single-storey rear extension of four metres. • Extensions of more than one storey must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house* by more than three metres. • Maximum eaves height of an extension within two metres of the boundary of three metres. • Maximum eaves and ridge height of extension no higher than existing house. • Side extensions to be single storey with maximum height of four metres and width no more than half that of the original house. • Two-storey extensions no closer than seven metres to rear boundary. • Roof pitch of extensions higher than one storey to match existing house. • Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house. • No verandas, balconies or raised platforms. • Upper-floor, side-facing windows to be obscure-glazed; any opening to be 1.7m

above the floor. • On designated land* no permitted development for rear extensions of more than one storey. • On designated land no cladding of the exterior. • On designated land no side extensions. * The term “original house” means the house as it was first built or as it stood on 1 July 1948 (if it was built before that date). Although you may not have built an extension to the house, a previous owner may have done so. * Designated land includes conservation areas, national parks and the Broads, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and World Heritage Sites. Please note: The permitted development allowances described here apply to houses and not to: • Flats and maisonettes • Converted houses or houses created through the permitted development rights to change use • Other buildings • Areas where there may be a planning condition, Article 4 Direction or other restriction that limits permitted development rights.

T

he UK Window group, responsible for manufacturing 10,000 + window, doors and conservatories each week, supplying some of the biggest household names in the industry, have struck a deal with local installers Fusion Home Improvements to be an outlet for their high quality products. The business model is to serve the trade and retail markets and to facilitate thisa new show centre and trade counter has been created in the Old Railway House in Sutterton on the main roundabout where the A16 meets the A17. Windows and doors are available in 5 days from order and at the site is a full stock of building plastics, underground drainage and rainwater goods which can be sold as they are or fully installed. “We needed more space to cope with the extra windows, doors and conservatories that will be passing through our firm, serving builders, independent window installers and the DIY market”. Owner Richard Fairbanks explains “this is all extra to the retail business that we have been and will continue to install to local customers. The move to Sutterton

“Fusion Home Improvements have always been competitive on price but the tie up with UK Window Group gives them access to unrivalled support and group bulk buying power..” sits us in between our old base in Pinchbeck and on the link road to our main target markets of Boston, Sleaford and King Lynn. We aim to serve as many people as possible hence the show centre, we have displays of windows, conservatories and composite doors so people can touch and feel the quality of the products. Both our windows and doors have unrivalled levels of security using Yale locks for added peace of mind for our customers.”.

Fusion Home Improvements have always been competitive on price but the tie up with UK Window Group gives them access to unrivalled support and group bulk buying power. “Pop in for a quote and a coffee, have a look at our products and see what you could save” for the opening month of October, just bring in a quote and it will be beaten, regardless of product. That applies to fully installed windows and doors, conservatories or building plastics.

Quality Products We have installed thousands of walk-in showers, baths and wet rooms, over the last 15 years and all of our products are supplied by UK specialist bathing companies. We do not use below standard or imitation goods often sourced from the internet which so often become faulty in the first few months of use. All of our products come with the manufacturer’s warranty as well as the AHM Installations 12-month installation warranty, to give you peace of mind. Need a bathroom now? If needed, we can install a new bathroom or shower adaptation within TWO weeks! We’ll always do what we can to help as quickly as we can. We do more than just bathroom and wetroom installation. Our team are also experts in accessible kitchen design, efficient heating solutions and stairlift installation. Friendly and Family run – Supply and Install or Start to Finish. Call Us Now For Free On 0800 7316495.

DS 7 Crossback 2018 PROS ‘N’ CONS à Looks à Comfortable à Space à Expensive

4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(DS 7 Crossback Performance Line BlueHDi 180 – as tested)

A

At first sight, the DS 7 Crossback shows off conservative, rather than cool, characteristics. Yes, yes, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But this is my opinion, and someone needs to have one. On the move, body lean is kept to a minimum, even though the steering is spongy and dead - and it isn’t perked up by changing the DS into its Sport mode. Don’t let me rain on the DS7 Crossback’s parade too much, though. The French motor is best kept in its Comfort setting, so that you can make the most of its respectable ride quality. This car isn’t all about the zero to 62mph sprint, it’s far happier as a laid-back cruiser. But it can still pull okay, with the 2.0-litre diesel model doing the 0-62mph in just under 10 seconds. The DS marque is launching the Crossback with four different trim levels, and the Performance Line DS 7, as driven here, is likely to be the model to please the masses. This car gets 19-inch alloys, a gloss black grille, and LED lights. In the cabin, leather and Alcantara abound, while a 12inch touchscreen infotainment screen hogs the limelight. Playing second fiddle to the big display is a large analogue clock, perched above the ignition button. The infotainment system itself is intuitive and responsive and is supported

by a bunch of touch sensitive switches for the cabin controls. But more remarkable in this car segment is the adding of an infrared night vision camera that projects a vivid picture onto the driver’s display. It picks out pedestrians and animals ahead of you, and, as I found out driving around Berkshire’s unlit backroads, it works! The only drawback is that the clever driver aid is an option costing £1600. Room in the cabin is good for five-up and it’s a very comfortable car fore and aft. Indeed, the DS 7 Crossback’s flat floor means that a rear seat occupant sitting in the middle will still have space. What’s more, the car’s boot is generously proportioned with 555 litres of cargo capacity. The all-new DS’ weak point is its price-tag. At over £30,000, other more established premium brands may seem more attractive. The BMW X3 and Volvo XC40 are examples of the stiff competition the up-to-theminute French machine is up against. Still, being different is quite appealing, so it’ll be interesting to see what 2018 holds for the DS 7 Crossback. Watch this space!
