Summer is most definitely here, what a glorious May we have had, non stop sunshine! We had a trip down to Peppa Pig World over the bank holiday weekend camping…how lucky were we with the weather?! We could not believe how fortunate we were, it was like being abroad. In this issue we are celebrating National Fish & Chip Day on June 1st, is there anything more British than a good portion of fish & chips? If you’re looking for days out in the local area make sure you visit Pinchbeck for it’s carnival, 41 years since the first one was held! Tim is test driving the Jaguar E-Pace, we also look at The History of Father’s Day, don’t forget to mark it in your diary for June 17th! Our new columnist, Otis, is sniffing out the best places to walk around Surfleet. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

NEWS St John’s Care Home Celebrate Queen’s Birthday With Street Party On Care Home Open Day

St John’s Care Home in Spalding enjoyed a fantastic day on Care Home Open Day (Saturday 21st April). Residents and staff welcomed visitors and families throughout the day, in the afternoon everyone enjoyed a London themed street party to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. The idea behind Care Home Open day is to encourage local people to visit care homes in their community and to work together to develop better relationships. This important connection is something

that St John’s Care Home has long since nurtured, the home is making a meaningful contribution to people in the local community, with regular visits from children at St John’s Primary School and many other community groups. Care Home Open Day is a great opportunity to show the community that care homes are friendly, happy and exciting places to be. On Care Home Open Day 2018 residents had a visit from their PAT dog Monty who is a regular visitor to the home and able to give all the residents an opportunity to engage in pet therapy. Later in the day singer Rosa Mae provided entertainment followed by a street party to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. Activities & Wellbeing Coordinators Viera Harrison and Ida Brickles decorated the home and painted a London skyline and there were even Beefeaters on the door. Staff dressed up in costumes from

Mary Poppins to complete the themed afternoon. Juliet Peall Home Manager at the home, said: “This is a great way to show the excellent services on offer and the fantastic work that goes on at St John’s Care Home. Some people still have misconceptions about care homes so we are keen to dispel any myths and for people to come and have a look around, meet the staff and our residents.”

Encore Defies Training When Will I be Seen? Report With £1M Investment In Staff A recent national report has detailed that workers across the UK have a lack of access to skills development and training – however, leading recruitment agency Encore Personnel is going above and beyond to ensure its staff has the necessary training to thrive in their careers. The report by the CIPD, (Chartered Institute of Training & Development - the professional body for HR and people development), highlighted that while overall satisfaction with work and jobs is reasonable, there are significant numbers who feel differently, with training and development showing up as really important. In fact, one in four workers (27%) say that their job does not offer good opportunities to develop their skills. However, Encore Personnel, which has an office on New Road in Spalding, wants to change these statistics by providing great career opportunities for its staff – something that saw the business invest £1m in staff training and growth opportunities last year.

Encore places thousands of workers each week and believes that the success and growth of the business has always been dependant on making Encore a great place to work, where its employees are given access to excellent training and career development opportunities. This includes providing its staff with a management training academy, recruitment apprenticeships, internal training schemes and targeted personal development programmes with a ‘plan, do, review’ system which has proven to be very successful. Encore is also currently introducing a tailored graduate scheme across the business to attract bright and enthusiastic Consultants and Account Managers straight from university. Pete Taylor, Operations Director at Encore, said: “The recruitment of talented consultants has become much more difficult over recent years and at Encore, we have always understood the importance of attracting and retaining raw talent by providing development and training opportunities. Cindy Gunn, HR Manager at Encore Personnel, added: “At Encore, we are not just dedicated to helping our candidates find great places to work, but also to providing a place in which our staff can thrive and have fun while doing so. “Throughout this year, we will continue to invest in our people, training opportunities, reward initiatives and employee engagement schemes. I am very excited to see what 2018 brings for Encore.”

Over the past 5 years, Healthwatch Lincolnshire has consistently received patient comments, relating to the difficulties they are experiencing getting an appointment to see a GP. Healthwatch Lincolnshire is pleased to share with you our report ‘When will I be seen’ Patients experience of accessing GP Appointments which has now been published.

Key headlines • Whilst the National GP survey and the Healthwatch Lincolnshire (HWL) surveys all suggest that problems accessing appointments are not as widespread as thought, it is important to recognise there are some areas, where access to GP appointments is challenging e.g. East Lincolnshire (coastal) • 1 in 4 patients told us having a delay in getting an appointment had an impact on them, with anxiety being the top reason. • 1 in 3 patients told us they have used another service, when they could not get a GP appointment, with A&E being amongst the top places patients go to. • Patients told us the telephone was the most popular way of contacting their surgery. However, from patient feedback to HWL, difficulty getting through on the telephone to the reception is the top cause of frustration. • Throughout the survey, patients have placed an emphasis on receiving continuity of care and that may include seeing a named GP or other medical professional e.g. diabetic nurse. For patients who place particular importance on this, it could well have a negative and far reaching impact on patient experience, including such things as access to GP appointments. • There is an appetite from patients to access services, such as text messaging and video conferences. Lessons learnt and best practice could be transferred from GP to GP service, across the county. • Healthwatch Lincolnshire is one of 152 local Healthwatch groups set up by the Government as part of health reforms set out in the Health and Social Care Act in 2012. Its job is to ensure that the voice of patients, users and the public is at the heart of NHS and care services. Healthwatch Lincolnshire gathers patient views, represents those views to local NHS organisations and makes sure they are taken account of.

Nick’s Notes

T

he National Industrial Strategy is currently out for consultation and South Holland will be part of a more local version within Lincolnshire. The National Strategy focuses around five foundations: Ideas, People, Infrastructure, Business Environment And Places. So for South Holland when it comes to ideas we work closely with the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, University of Lincoln and Lincolnshire County Council using Research & Development to focus on our key priorities in the Agri-Food / Agri-tech and aligned industries to ensure our businesses can be World leaders in their field. In the People area I have had a long term ambition to change our traditional low wage, low skill economy to one of high wage / high skill. The opportunities are now there, through the soon to be developed Food Enterprise Zone And University of Lincoln Centre of Excellence. Aligning skills required by local businesses to the school and college curriculum is key to the future.Engineering, artificial intelligence including robotics are a major part of that future vision. As far as Infrastructure is concerned, we have recently been successful with a £12m Housing Infrastructure bid to enable the Spalding Western Relief Road, key to unlocking 4,000 houses over the next twenty years. The District is proGrowth and has aspirations to improve our road infrastructure, especially removing pinch points, as in the recent major improvements at Peppermint Junction, including the A16 and A17 with its strategic links to the A47. Working alongside the County Council, Broadband is also a key area for continuous improvement. In the Business Environment South Holland is ‘Open for Business’. We deliver Grants 4 Growth enabling small and medium sized businesses to grow. We

have a nationally important food and flower industry, processing, packing and distribution based economy and we are a critical area for value added business and have a mature supply chain. Places - South Holland is going through the final stages of its local plan and has an ambitious plan for housing across the district, along with employment allocations and industrial units. Our market towns will be a key area for focus going forward. In general we have an established flexible workforce and a lower than average cost of living along with some excellent educational resources, making South Holland an attractive place for inward investment, living and working which aligns well with the National Industrial Strategy.

Advice

Human trafficking and general immigration advice

Citizens Advice

...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems

Human trafficking is the trade of people for exploitation and commercial gain. If you think someone has been trafficked, you can help make them safe. Identify human trafficking Human trafficking doesn’t just happen in the sex industry. People are exploited in construction, farming and even working in other people’s homes. Usually people who have been trafficked are: •lied to about what a job involves •brought from another country (but people can also be trafficked within the UK) •forced to work •monitored very closely by whoever they work for Because people are trafficked to work for very little pay, or none at all, it’s sometimes called ‘modern day slavery’ or labour ‘exploitation’. Signs of human trafficking All trafficking cases are different, but there are common signs. A victim of trafficking might: •have a lack of freedom •work for very little or no pay •seem to be in debt to someone •live in fear of someone, or even the authorities •have signs of physical abuse, like cuts and bruises •move location regularly Children can be trafficked too. They will share many common signs with adult victims, but may stand out from other children because: •they have money or possessions that they can’t account for •they don’t seem to live with parents or guardians •they’re emotionally unstable, eg aggressive, withdrawn or anxious

Get advice If you want confidential advice about trafficking before calling the police, there are a number of specialist organisations you can talk to. You can contact: •The Salvation Army’s 24 hour confidential helpline for reporting modern slavery on 0300 3038 151 •The Modern Day Slavery Foundation’s helpline on 0800 0121 700, open 24 hours a day •the NSPCC’s helpline on 0808 8005 000 if you think a child is in danger of trafficking If you want to talk to someone face-toface, your local Citizens Advice can help you decide what to do next. What happens after you report trafficking The first thing the police will do is protect someone who has been trafficked from anyone that might harm them. The police and specialist organisations will work together to provide the victim with practical and emotional support. They’ll get medical care and help arranging accommodation in safe place, away from their traffickers. If it’s safe, they’ll be helped to return to their home country. If it’s not safe to return, perhaps because they might be trafficked again, they can apply for asylum in the UK

immigration problem. It’s important to get help early if you’re not sure what to do. You can get free, confidential help from your local Citizens Advice on: •visa eligibility and applications - including advice on filling in forms (although they might not be able to fill in the form for you) •chasing up Home Office delays •getting replacement immigration documents •problems with coming to the UK or staying in the UK, eg applications for entry clearance, leave to enter, leave to remain or residence permits •becoming a British citizen (also known as ‘naturalisation’) If your situation is more complicated If your situation is more complicated, you might need to pay for specialist advice from a professional immigration adviser or solicitor. For example, if you’re applying for your family to join you in the UK or you’re separating from your partner. You need to make sure that an immigration specialist is registered with OISC (Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner) before you ask for their advice.

Gosberton House Academy Gosberton House Academy has shown itself to have a strong commitment to providing frequent, continuous and progressive learning outside the classroom (LOtC) to all of its pupils by achieving a national LOtC Silver award. LOtC Mark is awarded by CLOtC, the national voice for learning outside the classroom. CLOtC also provides free online information for teachers on how to plan and organise high quality LOtC activities. LOtC Mark is the only national accreditation for schools which recognises, and supports, the development of learning outside the classroom across all subject areas. Learning outside the classroom is known to contribute significantly to raising standards & improving pupils’ personal, social & emotional development. It also contributes to the quality and depth of learning (OFSTED, Learning Outside the

Classroom - How far should you go? 2008). Elaine Skates, Chief Executive of CLOtC said: “Learning outside the classroom provides the most memorable experiences in a child’s school life. LOtC Mark (Silver) demonstrates that the school is committed to delivering genuinely valuable learning outside the classroom experiences to all of their children and young people, and to continuing to develop that provision. Learning outside the classroom has many proven educational benefits. LOtC Mark Silver will support schools in building on their LOtC provision, thereby ensuring that many more young people have memorable, exciting and valuable learning outside the classroom experiences. I congratulate Gosberton House Academy on being awarded LOtC Mark Silver.”

This was confirmed by Ofsted when they visited in November 2017, agreeing we had ‘maintained the high standards of provision found at the last inspection’ and commending the high quality of our Apprenticeships at Boston College stating that ‘a substantially higher proportion of Apprentices achieve their qualifications than in other providers’.” The Principal and Chief Executive at Boston College, Jo Maher is delighted with the results and added: “I am extremely proud of the staff team who have delivered an exceptional Apprenticeship performance, placing us amongst the top 10% of colleges nationally. We could not achieve these heights without the support of our employer and delivery partners who continue to work with us to develop Lincolnshire’s best Apprenticeship talent.”

What is causing the nightly disturbances in Eel Marsh House where Kipps has been sent to finalise affairs after the death of its last occupant? And why won’t the locals talk about what happened there? This is a brilliantly evocative and spine tingling read. very decision we make is based on Love, Fear or a combination of both. Do you work in the job that you do because you love it or because you fear what will happen if you didn’t work? Are you in a relationship because you love the other person or because the fear of being alone or without financial or emotional support is too great? The problem is the fear path will never lead you to a good place, even if it feels like the secure or more comforting thing to do. It will never really lead you to what you want because doing things out of fear is a representation of what other people want us to do, or ways in which they want us to behave. Rarely is it our own path. As parents, things we often hear are about how we are bringing up our babies and children. ‘You should give them a dummy’ or ‘you don’t want to give them a dummy because it will be hard to take away’, ‘are you still breastfeeding – no wonder they won’t sleep through the night’ or ‘you didn’t breastfeed for very long’, ‘if you pick them up every time they cry you’re making a rod for your own back’ or ‘letting them cry like that is bad for them’. It feels a bit like you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. The truth is this – they are giving you advice out of both love and fear – love for

you and fear that you will have the same rocky journey that they did. In their own way they are truly trying to help, but instead of dealing with their own issues they try to parent vicariously through you. Sadly, in a society where men and women aren’t always taught to have confidence in their own parenting skills, random advice from people you love prays on your fears that you aren’t doing a ‘good enough’ job; that the daily struggles, mental anguish, anxiety and all round battle you do with yourself everyday could be easier if you listen to someone else that probably knows better. There is some truth in this, but parenting is a right of passage. Parenthood is about the making of a mother or father as much as the making of a child. Learning to trust your own instincts and have confidence in raising secure, happy, well balanced children is something that you can only learn by trial and error yourself. Having people around you that share your viewpoint is helpful, but unless you have found your ‘village’ before you have your baby this is also something you build as you go along. This month, I encourage you to think about whether your decisions are grounded in Love or Fear. Be brave, take the road less travelled and choose Love.

Put your best paw forward! It’s time to take a tour of one of our beautiful surrounding villages with a well-loved Labrador.

I

t’s a wonderful thing for a dog to walk alongside water. To see the sun glistening on the River Glen as it meanders slowly through the beautiful village of Surfleet. Swans swimming and ducks bobbing merrily along, making their way on its gentle waves. So many different styles of homes to see. The earthy smell of soil from the surrounding fields, which stretch for miles before blending into the beautiful blue sky. It all makes my tail wag. As I poddle along the path I can see and smell a pawful of places to eat. There’s a bridge for me to trot over. Look at what it leads to – a riverside track full of delightful views both down low and in the distance. A couple of little rowing boats are moored on the water, no doubt ready to set sail when warmer weather rolls around. I think I should quite like to find my sea legs. I could quite happily sit here all day; me with my bowl of water, my human with her flask of tea, looking along the Glen’s course, listening as the quacks from ducks blend into the gentle hum of traffic from the main road. As I’m sure you can imagine I’m a well-behaved dog, so I’m welcome in Glen Park. And how pleased I am! What a

lovely wander around the park’s woodland with its trim trail equipment tucked away in the trees. The outdoor gym looks a bit strenuous for me and those slides seem pretty high, but I’m sure you humans will think they are super. There are swings for babies and bigger kids, a zip wire, a roundabout you can climb. Wow! The only thing that could make all this better is a visit from the ice cream van. I hope they have dog treats on board.

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

There are two stories of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated. According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state in America on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise.

to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane, Washington was deferred to the third Sunday in June. The other story of the first Father’s Day in America happened all the way on the other side of the country in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men.

However, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officially recognised as a national holiday in America and quickly followed success here in the UK.

Why is the date of Father’s Day different in other countries? While countries including the UK, Ireland, US, France, Cyprus, South Africa, Netherlands, Greece, Japan, Canada and Saudi Arabia celebrate Father’s Day every June, others have the day on a completely different date in the year. Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and New L o n g S u t t oZealand n F ocelebrate c u s their L odads n gin September. BeBright Pre- School and Classes BeBright was founded in September 2016 by two local teachers Stephanie Barrett and Laura Spillett. It began as pack away classes for children and their carers to attend. These fun hands on sessions support the learning and development of young children through play based activities. The sessions are suitable for babies and children up to four years old. Throughout the session children can enjoy exploring messy play, be creative with playdough, arts and crafts, experiment with mark making, solve puzzles and develop early mathematics and literacy skills. Each session is unique and supports early language development and builds self confidence. At a BeBright session you would see children and adults playing together alongside the support of Steph and Laura. BeBright classes are coming to Spalding from June 2018. To book a taster session at the new Spalding venue please contact BeBright.

As passionate early years teachers Steph and Laura had a vision to one day expand BeBright and open their own Pre-School. This dream will become a reality when BeBright Pre-School opens its doors in September. Both Stephanie (BA Hons with EYTS) and Laura (BA Hons with QTS) are mums as well as qualified teachers. Between them they have over 25 years experience of working with children in Lincolnshire across both childcare and school settings. They share a passion for early years and creating an environment where young children can flourish. At BeBright Pre School the aim is to create strong relationships with families. Parents and carers are a child’s first

educators and at pre-school they want to build on this foundation and support each child on their own learning journey. The Pre-School aims: • To encourage creativity and independence through uninterrupted, constructive child led play. • To provide an enabling environment that celebrates individuality and diversity. • To ensure all children make progress according to their developing abilities, irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, religion, social background or additional support needs. As teachers Steph and Laura are always looking to further develop their own skills and have recently attended the Anna Ephgrave ‘In the Moment Planning’ training in 2018 and will implement this approach within the pre-school. They believe their role is to provide a superb enabling environment where clear boundaries are established and children can become engrossed in their play. Staff will support children’s high quality play and extend it further enabling children to extend their learning. The pre school has a free flow environment for the children to be able to access the outdoors as much as they desire, whatever the weather. The pre school children will also benefit from Yoga and Spanish sessions. Both Steph and Laura are trained to use Makaton and in BeBright Pre-School Makaton will be used along side talking as a method of communication. Makaton is extremely effective for children with additional needs and/or speech and language difficulties. The Pre-School, which is located near St John the Baptist Primary School, will cater for children aged two upwards and will be open during term time Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm. They will offer funded places for eligible 2 year olds, as well as up to 30 hours Free Early Years Childcare for eligible 3 – 4 year olds. For more information on session times available or to receive a brochure please contact BeBright Pre-School (see details below). They welcome people to visit and will be holding open days in August where families can come along and meet the team and see the wonderful pre-school indoor and outdoor spaces.

Molsom & Associates Molsom & Associates pride themselves with high standards of clinical care and customer service, in a friendly relaxed environment, offering products to maximise comfortable vision with value for money. This approach has helped the practice grow over the past 20 years from just Andy as a sole practitioner to now employs 1 further Optometrist, Ian Price, for more than 12 yrs and 11 support staff. Andy says “Opening the practice at a young age was a brave decision, but one I do not regret, it has given me the chance to use the best equipment, give my patients the time their eyesight deserves, and make

friends in the process. It has been a tough road starting from scratch, but we have built an incredible reputation, and we continue to build on our products and services.” Andy has numerous special interests in eyecare, including AMD, Vitreo-Retinal disorders and getting involved in managing and treating minor eye conditions through the NHS Triage and Treat Optometry Service, where he is a director of the Primary Eyecare Company that administers the NHS contract for Lincolnshire. He also treats Dry Eye Syndrome privately, offers a Specialist Dental and Surgical Loupe Fitting Service, and takes an active interest in the development of sight in children. Molsom & Associates offer a fully Bespoke Contact Lens service including lenses to correct close reading difficulties (VARIFOCAL) and for ASTIGMATISM, including complicated lens fitting for corneal disorders such as Keratoconus. Molsom & Associates Optometrists get involved with the local community, by working with local schools to promote healthy eyes and vision to young children,

Sponsoring the Young Achiever category of the Pride of South Holland Awards for the past 2 years. Also sponsoring the LIVES Glitterball in the Autumn, the Rotary Annual Charity Golf day and other good causes. “As there is no local school vision screening program, we have been raising awareness of the importance of good vision at an early age for past 6 years. We take Sidney the Bear along to meet the children to ensure an interactive experience for the children. It is of utmost importance for young children to have a simple FREE NHS sight test, as we learn through what we see. If we cannot focus or control our eye movements perfectly, then it is much harder (or nearly impossible) to learn.” added Andy Molsom.

Celebrate National Fish & Chip Day 2018 in Style Friday 1st June will see people across the country celebrating their love of fish and chips as they come together on National Fish & Chip Day! Fish and chip lovers in South Holland will be joining the rest of the UK to celebrate again as local chip shops, will be marking the occasion with special events. In 2017, National Fish & Chip Day was one of the biggest awareness days of the year in the UK so don’t miss your chance to be part of it! Pop in to your local chippy on the day and join the celebration!

National Fish & Chip Day is about giving fish and chips the recognition it deserves and helping to secure its position as the nation’s favourite dish. The event, which takes place on the first Friday in June every year, already has the backing of key players in the industry. The national event is once again being championed by trade organisation, The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association, who represent packers and distributors of oils and fats in the UK. Incoming NEODA President, Ryan Baker, comments, “National Fish & Chip Day has become more popular

each year and in 2018 we want it to be even bigger! It’s a celebration of the stars who work hard to bring Brits their favourite traditional takeaway. We want to bring the whole industry together to celebrate and showcase the great British institution that is Fish and Chips.” “To help build support in anticipation for the event, we are urging people to start tweeting with the hashtag #NationalFishandChipDay.” Visit www.nationalfishandchipday.org.uk to find out more.

Fresh, Locally Sourced Ingredients

We work closely with our wonderful suppliers to bring the very freshest ingredients to your plate in dishes that are created with care and passion in our kitchen. We pay just as much attention to the drinks we serve and you will find a wellstocked cellar with wines from across the world alongside craft ales and beers.

Carnival Pinchbeck

‘Children’s Books’ is the theme of the Pinchbeck Carnival this year. Everyone is invited for three days of community fun centred around the carnival marquee in the Rotten Row playing field from 8th – 10th June. Pinchbeck held it’s first carnival in 1977 to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. It was five years later before the next carnival was held in 1982 and it is still going strong 36 years later. The aim of the Carnival Association has always been to entertain the public with the added bonus of providing local clubs and organisations an event where they can raise money for their own causes. As a non-profit making organisation we are very grateful to local businesses for the support they give us. In addition, this year, we have received funds from Councillors Avery, Slade and Sneath. Our weekend begins on Friday with our annual bingo night which is held in the marquee. The tent doors open at 6.30pm for ‘eyes down’ at 7pm. It is £1 per book and there will be a licensed bar.. On Saturday the parade leaves Wimberley Way at 12 noon going down Rotten Row, Brownlow Cres, Bear Lane, Knight Street and back down Rotten Row to the playing field arriving about 12.45pm. Road junctions will be closed as the parade passes and then re-opened. It will be led by our ‘Royalty’ float with our very own Carnival Queen, Sian Groves and Princesses Bella Parker and Sophie Bolton closely followed by a parade of vintage cars. As well as decorated floats, the Breaston Highlanders marching band will be providing the music and also doing a display in the arena. Back on the field the Carnival will be officially opened at 1pm by our local PCSO, Sally Pusey. As our main arena act this year we welcome Ye Olde Redtail Falconry Display (Ray and Wendy Aliker) who will perform two different thirty minute shows. Fast, exciting and with audience participation. They will also have a static display of their birds which include Hawks, Falcons, Owls and Vultures. Other arena acts include, the martial arts group, Kuk Sool Won, Lincs Dog Display, Ben Coaton and Diamondz School of Dance. Adrian Ley from

Feet First Entertainment will be providing a circus skills workshop for the children to have a go. Tight rope, unicycles, juggling, stilts and much more. He will also do a display in the arena. As the arena acts finish we have a tug of war competition. Compères for the day are Jan and Chris from Tulip Entertainments. Weather permitting there will be a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. There are also children’s rides, stalls, refreshments and a licensed bar. In the marquee we have a handicrafts competition for both children and adults. As well as crafts, needlework, painting, flower arranging and photographs there are also some cooking categories. Entries should be bought to the marquee between 9am and 10.30am. Craft schedules are available from the Pinchbeck Community Hub or on our facebook page. You can also enjoy a catch up with your friends over a nice cup of tea and cake provided by the Women’s Institute. The fancy dress competition will be judged at 1.15pm and is also open to both children and adults. From 6pm there will be a 20th Century Festival of Music. This includes music from the decades and a quiz which is optional. Admission is £3 for adults and £1.50 for children. Excellent value as it covers both the day and evening entertainment. On Sunday, to draw the celebrations to a close there will be a United Church service of worship in the marquee at 10.30am followed by Sunday lunch at 1pm. Tickets are £7.50 and need to be purchased in advance from Chris who can be contacted on 01775 680444. To keep up to date with what is happening check out the Pinchbeck Carnival facebook page.

A thriving market town, Crowland supports a population of approximately 4,200 with the majority of the residents living within the town itself. The town is a pleasant mix of older properties

Improve Your Home

Home & Property

with New Doors and Roof! Your doors are the first impression of your home, so it is important they have kerb appeal. There are so many options for doors these days – wood, glazed, composite….the list goes on. So, what’s the best option for you looking at aesthetics, security and cost. uPVC front door When uPVC front doors were first introduced, they were a welcome alternative to the traditional timber front door – lower in cost and with greater thermal performance. However, not everybody appreciates the aesthetics of uPVC and the variety of styles and colours can be limited. Usually 28mm thick, many people feel they are easy to break into, and, although there have been innovations in the uPVC sector, the popularity of the uPVC front door is being overtaken my new materials. Glass reinforced plastic (GRP) composite Composite front doors were introduced to the market around 10 years ago, aimed at homeowners wanting to retain the appearance of a timber door whilst benefitting from modern materials, which require less maintenance and work harder to keep out the draughts. Now they’re a fast-growing option, with sales of composite doors almost doubling year on year. Usually 44mm thick, GRP doors are the most thermally efficient, but they’re not the most secure. And because colour is normally applied on a white fibreglass skin, GPR doors are prone to scratches. In particular, beware of asking door manufacturers to match any RAL colour, as colour applied in this way is especially at risk of scratching.

A popular option amongst DIYers, the down-sides are that you’ll need to maintain this type of door with annual sanding and re-painting or varnishing; you’ll need some high-quality locks to ensure it’s as secure as possible; and, to keep the chill at bay in winter, you might want to invest in a draught excluder as timber doors are not known for their thermal performance. Timber doors are also susceptible to the changing weather conditions, so you might find a timber door sticking in the frame at certain times of the year. Solid hardwood front door A bespoke, solid hardwood front door will add a touch of luxury to any home. Ideal for period properties, a solid hardwood front door will be made-to-measure and can be designed to a large extent by the homeowner. The end result is likely to be a high-quality front door that will last for many years – but you’ll need to be willing to look after it in order to protect your investment. Any paint or varnish will inevitably need to be re-applied as the colour fades or peels away. And without care and attention, a solid hardwood door may crack, absorb water and eventually rot. Adding a Roof to Your Conservatory Whilst adding an extra room in the form of a conservatory can be a more cost effective option than an extension you can be left with the issue of being too hot in the summer and too cool in the winter. There are many different types of roofs that can be used on a conservatory. From the low cost polycarbonate roof to the illuminating glass roof, the conventional tiled roof to the hybrid tiled and glazed roof, there are a lot of conservatory roof options to choose from.

Veneered timber front door Available off-the-shelf from the large DIY retailers, you can pick up a nice-looking veneered timber door from around £250. You’d need to paint or varnish it before getting started and, once it’s ready, you could either fit it yourself or ask a local builder to do it for you.

Tiled conservatory roof? Aesthetic appeal With a tiled roof, the conservatory can hold a more “homely” appeal and looks more like an extension to the house, blending in with the overall look and styling of the property. Roof tiles

also come in a number of colour options enabling you to pick one that goes well with the rest of the house. Versatile Tiled roofs can go with any of the various conservatory designs in existence. What’s more, you don’t have to stick with traditional concrete or slate tiles because there are now many products made with materials that are a lot lighter and durable. Energy efficient Tiled roofs are very effective in blocking external and extraneous noises potential providing your conservatory a more peaceful environment to help you enjoy your room even more. Solid roofing adds an extra layer of thermal insulation which contributes a lot to the ability to use the room comfortably even in times of excessively hot or cold weather – a complaint many conservatory owners with polycarbonate roofing make is that their conservatory becomes unusable during these times. In effect, they retain heat when it’s cold outside and deflect heat when it’s warm outside. A tiled roof is an excellent roof choice for a conservatory due to its many advantages. It is important to take into consideration however that there will be less natural light and you will need to meet building regulations and may even need planning permission in some cases. All in all, if greater use of the room and improved energy efficiency means more to you than huge amounts of natural light and small amount of paperwork for permits, this is definitely the way to go. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 33

Jaguar E-Pace D240 PROS ‘N’ CONS à à à à à

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(2.0 D240 R-Dynamic S AWD Auto – as tested)

T

he E-Pace is diminutive when compared with the F-Pace, and it doesn’t look much like it. It has more in common with the Range Rover Evoque, because it uses the same chassis. There are other Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) models rolled into the mix, too. The new SUV’s headlights are reminiscent of the two-seater Jaguar F-Type, possibly hinting at the athletic potential of the E-Pace. There are two petrols and three diesels on offer. I drove the most potent diesel, the D240 twin-turbo. As the numbers in its name suggest, the SUV churns out 240PS, and it’s fitted with an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive only. There are a couple of model line-ups: regular and R-Dynamic; the latter of which gets twin tailpipes, front fog-lights and body-coloured door cladding. Then there are four trim levels within each range. I drove the ‘S’ trim in R-Dynamic form, which boasts fat alloys, navigation, electricallyadjustable front seats and leather upholstery. Behind the wheel, the E-Pace isn’t mindblowing, but it’s very good - as far as small SUVs go. The car’s steering weights up well at speed and the baby Jaguar feels planted, inspiring some confidence in corners. Zero to 62mph is achieved in 7.4 seconds and the top speed is 139mph. Unsurprisingly, I found myself enjoying lacing the E-Pace down Corsican roads; perhaps even more so than if I’d been at the tiller of a German-made machine. The jewel in the E-Pace’s crown is undoubtedly its ride quality. The car feels refined on every road surface, behaving better than an SUV has any entitlement to, even at a snail’s pace. Potholes are

soaked up so well that there are times when you wonder if the Jaguar has metamorphized into a hovercraft. The D240 produces just a smidgeon of diesel clatter on start-up, but it soon settles. Give it the beans with your right foot, though, and the oilburning musical score returns. To be fair, the car’s sound insulation masks this most of the time, to the point where you start to question which fuel type the Jaguar drinks. The E-Pace’s ZF nine-speed automatic ‘box changes smoothly, and on the R-Dynamic, gearshift paddles make things more fun. Rather than staying in ‘auto’ mode, you can dance through the cogs yourself using the shifters behind the steering wheel. The cabin is a lovely place to spend time. It’s even grin-inducing at times, with neat touches, like the ‘cub’ image in the windscreen frame helping to raise a smile. The general effect is elegant enough, with skilfully placed sections of leather and double stitching to remind you you’re in a quality motor. Only some hunks of dark plastic here and there rain on the parade. Room-wise, you’re laughing in an E-Pace. The car will sit four-up, no problem, and tall occupants in the back seat won’t have cause to moan about legroom or headroom. There’s plenty of that. The practical side of things continues to the Jaguar’s boot. At 577 litres, it offers more cargo capacity than most other small SUVs. And things become positively van-like with the rear seats

folded down. In place of human cargo, there’s 1,234 litres to knock yourself out with. JLR has every right to look like ‘the cat that got the cream’ with this fresh product. The E-Pace will be popular, no doubt about it. It has a nearflawless mix of comfort, practicality, power and refinement. Not every premium compact SUV can do that.

Business Focus

Holbeach Heating Established in 1976, Holbeach Heating is still going strong today!

T

he Managing Director of Holbeach Heating, Chris Feeney, started business as Chris Feeney Plumbing & Heating in November 1976 a few months after having completing his City & Guilds. The business then became Holbeach Heating when the Fleet Street shop was opened in 1987. The majority of our work is central heating boiler and system replacements and maintenance. We particularly specialise in Worcester Bosch boilers and have been accredited installers since 1998. As we are Gas Safe Registered, we are able to carry

out work on both natural gas and LPG appliances. This also includes Landlord Gas Safety inspections and servicing. We are also OFTEC registered and work on oil boilers and together with repairs to them. We offer a fuel tank replacement service with bunded (double-skin) tanks. We can carry out general plumbing installations and repairs including water softeners and bathrooms. Most work we do is in Holbeach and its locality, but we can travel to an approximate 30 mile radius. We are proud that the vast majority of our work is repeat business and referrals.
