Welcome to the June issue

YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

So, this month we have enjoyed our annual pilgrimage down to Cornwall, a couple of months earlier than usual and thankfully we were graced with some lovely weather, we managed a couple of days on the beach which pleased my son! Holidays with small children are definitely different to the days of laying by a pool and deciding which cocktail to order next! If you haven’t ever been I can fully recommend it, the journey is definitely rewarded with a beautiful coastline, clear waters and traditional fishing villages. But, back to reality and this issue! This month we hope to inspire you to pick up a new skill and take part in national campaign Festival of Learning, there are many places who are offering discounted or free taster training courses for local adults. Did you know it’s also a time to celebrate the humble fish and chip dinner? June 2 is a day to get out there and celebrate the British dish. Don’t forget to mark in your diary June 18, it’s Fathers Day, if you’re struggling for inspiration check out page 18 and hopefully we can help. If you’re struggling for a family day out this month, you don’t need to go far as there is the Pinchbeck Carnival on, for more details turn to page 31. And finally this month, Tim is giving the Ford C-Max a spin. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue!

FAMILY BUSINESS

Peer Review A review of South Holland District Council has found that it is ‘doing a good job for residents’, ‘has strong and effective leadership’, and demonstrates ‘sound financial management’. The findings come from a Corporate Peer Challenge report, which was presented to Council members last night (12 April). The report has been written by a team of Local Government Association (LGA) peer reviewers, comprising senior officers and councillors from other parts of the country, who spent five days in December scrutinising various council plans and interviewing council staff and members, as well as representatives from a number of businesses and partner organisations which work with the councils. The review covered South Holland District Council and its partner authority, Breckland Council, in Norfolk, with which South Holland shares a senior management team. Leader of South Holland District Council Gary Porter explained why both councils invited the peer review: “We are committed to protecting and improving our services which our residents rely on. “Getting input from experienced peers from external organisations will prove invaluable in helping us maintain our progress and work on areas which need improvement.” Review key findings: • ‘Both councils are doing a good job for their residents, with a range of good quality services and involvement in a number of major projects central to economic growth.’ • ‘Both councils have good quality elected members and there are positive relationships between councillors and officers at all levels.’ • ‘It is clear that significant progress has been made in relation to many of the areas that the councils have sought to improve over recent years

and elected members and staff of both councils should be applauded for this.’ • ‘The two councils demonstrate sound financial management. Whilst they face an ongoing financial challenge… they have adopted a positive approach...’ • ‘It is really positive that, even beyond those service areas and functions that operate under shared management, there is good networking, sharing and cross-fertilisation of ideas between the two councils.’ The report also highlighted some areas for future development. These included clarifying ‘how the growth agenda is going to be shaped [and a] need to ensure the ambitions are clear. It also cited that while new management of Compass Point had had a positive influence, work is still ongoing to achieve further improvements. At its meeting, South Holland members agreed a recommendation for the Chief Executive to work with the Leader to develop an action plan based on the findings of the Peer Challenge report. Commenting on the report findings, Cllr Porter added: “The review recognised that improvements have been made in developing our staff and adapting to meet the changing needs of residents and businesses, all of which have been delivered against financial challenges. “The peer reviewers also highlighted the benefits of our shared management structure but stressed that this has potential for even greater success in future. “The review has given us plenty of food for thought, which is exactly what we wanted, so now myself and the Chief Executive will work on an action plan to help us shape our ongoing development. We will then seek Cabinet and Council approval for the plan so that the whole organisation owns and works with the plan.”

She is qualified to level three in city and guilds and has gained lots of experience running her own grooming business from home. Heather adds “I was over the moon to join the Jerry Green team and thrilled to be helping them raise more money for the wonderful dogs here. Turnout is often key to local election success in particular. In local elections we are lucky to get a 30% turnout, which always surprises me when the majority of decisions that affect people’s daily lives are made by the people who are elected at these elections. It can be somewhat demoralising when walking many miles over many weeks delivering leaflets in the knowledge that 70% of the households who you are giving leaflets to, probably won’t bother to vote. So in the morning I will be encouraging people to do just that! General Elections tend to be the opposite with up to 70% turnout in some areas – South Holland & The Deepings had a turnout of just short of 64%. Even so that means 36% didn’t bother to vote. Young, first time voters are taking much more of an interest than in previous years which is encouraging and we have to build on this for the future. The General Election on June 8th will have a huge bearing on people’s lives perhaps for a generation or more with our withdrawal from The European Union and the implications of that for our businesses, importers and exporters, tourism, holidays and the amount of money in our pocket. Negotiations will be extremely tough and

“It can be somewhat demoralising when walking many miles over many weeks delivering leaflets in the knowledge that 70% of the households who you are giving leaflets to, probably won’t bother to vote. So in the morning I will be encouraging people to do just that!”

the rhetoric from European leaders has certainly not helped that. That is why we need a strong leader and strong team to deliver the best possible outcome for the UK. Obviously, as a Conservative, I have every faith in Teresa May and her team to stand firm and deliver what is needed. All the more reason for everyone to turn out and vote to give her the strongest possible mandate . So, difficult times ahead but also exciting opportunities for trade with countries from around the world and a chance to make sure you vote, at this crucial election in just a few weeks time. Nick

School news

Spalding Parish Church of England Day School Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

The children and staff at Spalding Parish Church of England Day School enjoyed an action packed day raising money for Red Nose Day last term. The Year 6 children were busy selling Red Noses during the week and managed to raise an amazing £480. They also made time to train for a staff v Y6 High Five Netball Match. There were five competitive and energetic matches which saw the staff just taking the overall victory. Many goals were scored by both sides. The crowd, all wearing red, raised extra money through non-uniform and buying refreshments (another £278.23). Children in Year 6 worked hard to organise the day with the support of their teachers Kim Bird and Amelia Siddall. The school enjoyed some interesting match reports written by the Year 6s which brought up the issue of questionable footwork by some staff members. Once again the children, staff and parents of Spalding Parish of England Day School worked together to raise money for a worthy cause.

Ayscoughfee Hall School With the summer term comes summer trips! Reception have had a brilliant visit to Wansford and the Nene Valley Railway whilst Year 1 visited a local farm and restaurant as part of their topic on food. Other trips are planned to the Fitzwilliam Museum and University Botanic Gardens in Cambridge and to Sacrewell Farm, The Sealife Centre at Hunstanton, The Green Britain Centre and Spalding Water Taxi. Kindergarten have been busy learning about lifecycles and there has been great excitement at the hatching of numerous chicks and tadpoles in their classroom. Year 6 are busy rehearsing their end of year production and have begun their Community Program. This allows them the opportunity to work outside the classroom doing such things as litter picking, helping at Agape Food Bank and visiting residents at Georgian Court for tea and talk! Music forms a big part of the summer term, with the annual concert and children having the chance to perform to their parents, staff and friends in a series of music assemblies. Instruments featured this year include violin, piano, drums, guitar, cornet, saxophone, trumpet and cello. We are also delighted that, for the first time, we are offering private lessons in music theory and singing in addition to the class singing and Junior Choir enjoyed by the whole school. Sport hasn’t been forgotten with cricket and rounders featuring on the timetable as well as in matches with other schools and all children from Years 1 to 6 taking part in tennis taster sessions. Sport’s Day is on the horizon…fingers crossed for sunshine! 8 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Advice

Travel insurance Travel insurance can give you extra protection if your holiday doesn’t go as planned. So you should make sure you have cover if you’re planning a trip away. It’s particularly important to take out travel insurance if you are travelling independently because you may find yourself stranded with no way to get home and no-one to help sort out your holiday problem. Why take out travel insurance Travel insurance can protect you against the following things going wrong: • cancelling or cutting short your trip for reasons beyond your control • missed transport or delayed departure for reasons beyond your control • medical and other emergencies • personal injury and death • lost, stolen or damaged items, including baggage, passports and money • accidental damage or injury caused by you. If you don’t have travel insurance you will have to pay out of your own pocket to deal with a problem while you’re away. Or you may lose money if you have to cancel a trip and can’t get your money back. This could cost you thousands of pounds. Older travellers If an insurer or broker can’t offer you insurance because of your age, most of them will refer you to an alternative insurer or give details of a signposting service such as the British Insurance Brokers’ Association’s (BIBA’s) ‘Find a Broker’ service .You can use this service to find specialist insurers who can offer specific types of cover based on factors such as age and medical condition. You can find the BIBA’s ‘Find a Broker’

service by phoning their helpline on 0870 950 1790 or by going to their website at www.biba.org.uk. You can find out about Age UK’s travel insurance at www.ageuk.org.uk. Where can you buy travel insurance? Travel insurance is widely available. You can buy it from: • insurance companies • banks • retailers and supermarkets • travel agents • online comparison websites • holiday companies. Sometimes, travel insurance might be included as an extra service offered through your bank account or credit card. You should check how much you’re paying for this and what kind of cover it offers. For example, cover may be limited for your spouse or partner. It might be better to buy a standalone policy. Your travel agent may offer you travel insurance as part of a package holiday. You can opt for this if you want to but you don’t have to buy this insurance. The travel agent is breaking the law if they try to make you take it out or charge you more for your holiday because you refuse to accept it. If this happens, you should get advice. Before you buy holiday insurance It’s important to get the right type of cover for your needs. Think about: • where you’re travelling to. For example, if you’re travelling to the United States you will need extra medical cover • how old you are. Travel insurance can cost more if you’re over 65. There are special policies for older travellers which may be worth looking at • how often you travel. If you go away

Citizens Advice

...give free, confidential, impartial and independ ent advice to help you solve your problems

several times a year, it may be better to buy an annual travel policy rather than several single-trip policies • what you’ll be doing while you’re away. You may need extra cover if you’re taking part in dangerous sports, such as skiing or scuba diving • whether you’re travelling independently or on a package holiday. Package holidays usually offer you greater protection if things go wrong with transport or accommodation so you may not need to make a claim on your travel insurance • how you’re travelling. Cruises and budget airline flights may not be covered by some insurance policies. What cover should travel insurance include? Your travel insurance should always include the following cover: • medical expenses and cover for getting you home if you’re injured or fall ill abroad • personal injury and cover for accidents or damage caused by you • cover for lost or damaged items • cover for lost or delayed baggage • cover for cancellation or missed departure. How much you pay for your insurance depends on the amount of cover you’re likely to need. You should never underinsure yourself just to save money. However, you may be able to keep costs down.

Top 10 tips for moving house!

B

uying or selling a property can be very stressful, especially if you are a first time buyer. Here are our top 10 tips for moving house. • Instruct a good Solicitor – we advise people to use a local and trusted Solicitor, so you can talk to them at every stage of the moving process • Apply for your mortgage offer as soon as possible. Once you have a mortgage offer approved you know exactly how much you can afford to borrow. • Contact the utility companies – it is important to let all of your service providers know in advance of your moving day so you have your phone line, gas, electric etc. ready for your new home • A good clear out – moving house is the perfect excuse for a good clear out • Book your removal company – only when

your Solicitor confirms your moving date and contracts have exchanged would you be advised to book your removal company. But it is a good idea to get some quotes beforehand! • Redirect your post – you can do this through Royal Mail. But remember to also tell your family, friends and work or your new address details • Pack, pack, pack • Ask the previous owners everything you need to know – your Solicitor will do this for you but make sure you think about; where is the stopcock? What days are the bins emptied? Where is the thermostat? And so on. • Essentials box for moving day – make sure you have your essentials to hand on the day of moving. Tea bags, kettle, milk, biscuits…

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Family life

Festival of Learning (previously Adult Learners’ Week) is a national celebration of lifelong learning - the largest in England.

Family Life

The Festival of Learning, led by Learning and Work Institute, invites organisations and communities to take part in adult learning activities to showcase the wide range of opportunities and resources available to adults hoping to continue or resume their education. The Festival recognises the inspiring achievements of adult learners nationwide with a celebratory national awards ceremony in Birmingham in September. Our mission is to celebrate the benefits of learning and to encourage everyone to embrace lifelong learning. Festival of Learning celebrates the remarkable achievements of adults who have used learning to transform their lives, and highlights how lifelong learning benefits society and the economy. As part of the Festival, hundreds of organisations hold

learning events and activities that inspire people of all ages to ‘have a go’ and discover how learning can change their life. The Festival celebrates learning through the remarkable stories of people, projects, provision and organisations that have used learning to transform their lives and the lives of others. The achievements of Festival of Learning award winners are recognised and inspire others to discover the power of learning. Stephen Evans, Learning and Work Institute Chief Executive, said: “The Festival of Learning helps people to learn and to discover the wide range of opportunities there are to gain

new skills, expand their abilities and transform their lives. I hope that people take advantage of this exciting event at local training centres and recognise that you’re never too old to learn.” Supporting Festival of Learning by nominating learners and hosting ‘have a go’ events raises the profile of the learning opportunities available, encourages adults to try something new, and ultimately creates a real celebration of the joy of learning. Festival of Learning has inspired many other adult

learning celebrations across the world. Following on from Adult Learners’ Week which began in 1992, Festival of Learning is a great opportunity to celebrate the remarkable achievements of adults who have used learning to transform their lives. Through these stories we know that learning not only helps the learner but their families, the communities they live in and the places they work. Festival of Learning is the best time to showcase how adult learning

benefits society and the economy. Learning happens everywhere, people are constantly discovering new things about their lives, their careers and the world around them. For Festival of Learning to truly reflect and do justice to the enormous scope and potential of this learning world then we want to hear your inspirational stories. The best way to share these stories is to nominate learners, tutors and organisations, for a Festival of Learning Award by visiting www.festivaloflearning. org.uk

Family life

Father’s Day F ather’s Day is held on the third Sunday of June and it isa day to honor fathers and father figures, such as grandfathers and fathersin-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their fathers or to send them a card or gifts. There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the Sun as the father of the universe. Since the summer solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day, some people see a link

Family Life

between the two. The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations to plan a day to honor fathers. Father’s Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom of Father’s Day. This is in contrast to Mother’s Day, which has a very different history in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Ideas for Days Out on Father’s Day Are you stuck for ideas on how to make Father’s Day extra special this year? We’ve got some great ideas - from day trips to dad-friendly activities that will make it a day to remember for all ages! Many of them are budget friendly too and won’t break the bank, they just take a bit of time and planning. CYCLING AND SUNDAY LUNCH Why not dust down the bikes and head out for some active summer fun? Office-bound dads will welcome the chance to get some exercise. And as long as you choose cycling routes that the children can manage, you’re guaranteed a fab,

low-cost day out. And why not stop at a family friendly pub near you for a lovely Sunday lunch to make it even more special, you will deserve it after all! GO-KARTING Ticking all the boxes needed for the perfect ‘boys day out’ go karting is a brilliant Father’s Day activity. Do remember that there will be age restrictions for children so if you want to kart together you’ll need to find out whether that’s going to be possible in advance. BEACH AND BBQ Weather permitting, there’s nothing dads and kids like more than charging about on a beach for a couple of hours, followed by a BBQ the perfect summer fun activity. Load up the

18 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

car with frisbees, swimming gear, buckets and spades and head off to the coast. Work up an appetite playing in the sand and then the whole family can help Dad stoke up a delicious BBQ, or pop down to get fish and chips if you would like the easier British seaside tradition! GOURMET PICNIC AND PAPERS If Dad is bit of a foodie then why not prepare a delicious picnic and then take off somewhere pretty to enjoy it?

Bring a selection of the weekend papers for him to read/snooze behind after he’s had his fill (and a football or rounders set to play once his energy is restored!) BOWLING & BURGERS It’s a no-brainer - bowling provides reasonablypriced indoor fun for all ages (even really teeny kids can have a go) and is perfect for wet afternoons. Followed by a burger this really is a fun family day out for all!

Get Holiday Ready Sun Safety for Kids Just one blistering sunburn in childhood can double your little one’s lifetime risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Young, sensitive skin is especially vulnerable to damaging rays, so protect your child by being sun-care savvy.

What does SPF stand for? Is a higher number more effective? An SPF, or sun protection factor, indicates a sunscreen’s effectiveness at preventing sunburn. “If your child’s skin reddens in 10 minutes without sunscreen, SPF 15 multiplies that time (10 minutes) by 15, meaning she’d be protected from sunburn for approximately 150 minutes or 2 1/2 hours. Of course, this depends on an adequate application of sunscreen.it is recommend to use at the very minimum sunscreens with at least an SPF of 15, which blocks 93 percent of UVB rays. Higher SPFs provide even greater protection, but only to a certain point: SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of UVB and SPF 50+ (the maximum SPF you’ll find on sunscreen labels)

Home security tips for the holidays Holidays are a time to kick back your feet and let down your hair but the countdown can be quite stressful especially when you need to think about packing for the kids, providing for the pets and making sure your home is properly secure before you hit the road to your destination. Exterior check Take a walk around your property to inspect fences, walls and gates checking for any evidence of damage or tampering that could allow intruders access to the property. Post Before you go away arrange for a neighbour to collect any mail and newspaper deliveries as nothing shouts “empty house” to criminals louder than an overflowing mailbox. Neighbour to neighbour Ask your neighbour to keep an eye on

your property while you are away and visa versa. You could also perhaps offer your driveway as extra parking for them! Light up Research has shown that burglars do not favour breaking into a well-lit property, so make sure that you have sufficient outdoor lighting that switches on at night as well as timers on lights in the property. Lock up Remember to make sure all windows and doors are securely closed and locked before you leave and don’t forget to double check the windows in children’s bedrooms and bathrooms. Secure outbuildings Outbuildings are often an extension of your home, so there is yet more property to steal from. Often these buildings don’t generally have the best security, ensure rusty locks are replaced and doors locked.

Packing Tips If you’re still struggling to cram all those essential just-in-case outfits into your bag, here are some of the best packing tips to make your holiday a little easier. Reduce by a third We’ve all done it - packed 4 pairs of shorts and then only worn one pair all holiday. Don’t make the cardinal sin of over-packing. Lay all of your clothes on the bed and be ruthless - aim to get rid of a third. Breathing room This isn’t a pre-flight meditation technique we’re talking about your case. There’s no denying that when you return you’ll be packing some serious souvenirs for your friends and family - just leave enough room! Towel on top What’s the first thing everyone wants to do when they get to the hotel? Go to the beach, of course! Make life easier by packing your towel last - not only will it mean a quick turnaround from landing to lounger, but it will also cover any loose clothing in your case. Win-win! Use a vacuum pack They’re cheap to buy and don’t actually need a vacuum - just roll the air out. They keep all of your clothes packed neatly together and protect them from any spillages. Beware, your clothes may appear to shrink but they’ll still weigh the same. Clever accessorizing A few well-chosen accessories, rather than entire extra outfits, will keep you prepared for any unexpected holiday occasions. Think fancy flipflops, a beautiful scarf or tie, a smart belt or some fashion jewellery to give your outfit some oomph.

Top Tip: Wear your heavy items! How many clothes can you wear at once? On a serious note, make sure you wear your heaviest boots and pack your lightest flip flops. Not only will you save space in your case, you’ll also save on baggage allowance. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 21

Honeypot Day Nursery & Pre-school

J

ust over 10 years ago, the local authority built a new school building for Weston Hills C of E Primary School and little did I know that when leaving the old school, my passing comment of ‘This building would make a good nursery and preschool’ would result in actually doing it. There have been up and downs along the way, but many more ‘ups’ than ‘downs! After a protracted purchase period, we finally owned the building and, with 4 members of staff and eight children, opened our doors in April 2008. Honeypot Day Nursery and Pre-school now has approximately 75 under 5’s on roll, together with 47 school children who attend various out of school sessions and 16 members of staff. As parents ourselves, we recognise the importance of providing high quality, affordable childcare in a local community. Our primary aims are: • To provide the highest quality standards in care and development through the creation of a warm, caring and stimulating environment. • To provide the best opportunity for each child to develop socially, physically, emotionally and educationally at their own rate as individuals. • To maintain close working relationships with parents, ensuring we work in partnership with the child’s best interests at the heart of everything we do. • To ensure children leave Honeypot with the necessary skills for the next step in their life as they start school. • For everyone to feel happy, safe and valued. We recognise that sending a child to Honeypot is usually the child’s first experience of care and education outside of the home and we aim to make it a happy and memorable one. We maintain records of every child’s achievements at the nursery, which are available for parents to access on-line with many, many pictures. Parents can contribute to this record and it therefore develops into a learning journey covering the whole period the child is with us, for parents to keep when the child leaves. Our staff are well qualified with a variety of qualifications from EYPS to Level

3. We usually take apprentices who will all be working towards achieving a level 3 qualification. We feel passionate about our role and expect high standards from each and every one of our team. The staff team is fabulous and many staff are also parents themselves. Children need to play, and we plan learning opportunities that are both fun and stimulating, aiming to develop enquiring minds. Children enjoy a variety of activities, both indoors and out – in all weathers! They may come home with works of art for the fridge, a beautiful building (from cardboard boxes) or cakes. Sometimes they come home with nothing, but they will have had a great time and developed new skills from the things they have done. We have a lot of singing and movement and during the summer we encourage parents to join us for ‘sports day’ – I use the term loosely! We have trips out, Christmas parties, visitors in (police, reptiles, ceramic painting) graduations, leavers and parents’ parties. Honeypot Day Nursery takes funded

children from 2 years old, where parents meet government set criteria. All 3 and 4 year old children can receive funded care for up to 15 hours per week during the school term (or a lower number stretched over the year) from the term after they turn 3. From September 2017, 3 and 4 year olds with working parents, may be entitled to receive a further 15 hours per week – taking the total to 30. We are happy to show you around our nursery, and talk to you about your childcare needs. For more information call: 01406 380803, email: office@ honeypotdaynursery.com or see our website www.honeypotdaynursery.com

National Fish & Chip Day: 2 June 2017

F

ollowing the resounding success of last year’s inaugural National Fish and Chip Day, NEODA is delighted to announce that Fish & Chip lovers across the UK are coming together again to celebrate the nation’s favourite dish on Friday, 2nd June 2017. But it’s not just about one day, it’s about supporting a British tradition all year round and keeping our independent fish and chip shops open. National Fish & Chip Day is about giving fish and chips the recognition it deserves and helping to secure its position as the nation’s favourite dish. The event,

which will take place on the first Friday in June every year, already has the backing of key players in the industry. The national event is once again being championed by trade organisation, The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association, who represent packers and distributors of oils and fats in the UK. NEODA President, Andrew Marriott, comments, “National Fish and Chip Day celebrates the stars who work hard to bring Brits their favourite traditional takeaway. We want to bring the whole industry together to celebrate and showcase the great British institution that is fish and chips.”

“To help build support in anticipation for the event, we are urging people to start tweeting with the hashtag #NationalFishandChipDay.” Visit www.nationalfishandchipday.org.uk to find out more.

Fish & Chip Facts!

• Fish and chips make a balanced, nutritious meal. They are a valuable source of protein, fibre, iron and vitamins. • Fish and chips were first served together as a dish around 1860 - although their origin is contested. In London, the Malin family claims to be first, as do the Lee family in Manchester. • Fish and chips were served in newspaper until the 1980s. • British consumers eat some 382 million portions of fish and chips every year. That’s six servings for every man, woman and child.

28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

• Annual spend on fish and chips in the UK is in the region of a staggering £1.2 billion! • During the Second World War Winston Churchill recognised the crucial role of fish and chips, referring to them as “good companions”. • Fish and chips were two of the few foods not subject to rationing because the government feared the dish was so embedded in the nation’s culture that any limit would damage morale. • Fish and chips played a part in the D-Day Landings - British soldiers identified each other by crying out ‘fish’ and waiting for the response of ‘chips’. • There are currently approximately 10,500 specialist fish and chip shops in the UK. • These dramatically outnumber other fast food outlets.

• There is a long tradition of funny chip shop names – our favourites are The Cod’s Scallops and mobile fish and chip shop Star Chip Enterprise. • Fish and chips appear in Charles Dickens’ “A Tale Of Two Cities”. • The record number of fish and chip portions sold in one day is 12,406 at Marini’s in Glasgow. The record was set in 1999. • The word batter comes from the French word battre, which means to beat - in reference to whisking the flour and water together. • The world’s largest portion of fish and chip’s was made by Fish & Chips @ London Road in Enfield, London, on July 2012. The mammoth portion of Halibut and chips weighed in at 47kg. • The World Record holders for the fastest portion of chips served from scratch belongs to Henley’s Fish & Chip Shop in Wivenhoe, Colchester, Essex. They took a raw potato, peeled it, chipped it, cooked to perfection and served up in an amazing 222 seconds! • The Guinness World Record for wrapping chips is held by Steph Celik of Blue Whale Fish & Chip Shop in Maltby, South Yorkshire. Beating a previous record by two seconds in 2012, speedy Steph wrapped up five 350g portions of chips, with added salt and vinegar, in just 58 seconds.

Pinchbeck Carnival

M

usic’ is the theme of the Pinchbeck Carnival this year. Everyone is invited for three days of community fun centred around the carnival marquee in the Rotten Row playing field from 9th – 11th June. In 1977 Councillor Nobby Walker and his band of helpers organised Pinchbeck’s first Carnival to celebrate the Queens Silver Jubilee. However, it would be five years before the next carnival was held in 1982 and it is still going strong 35 years later. The aim of the Carnival Association has always been to entertain the public with the added bonus of providing local clubs and organisations an event where they can raise money for their own causes. As a non-profit making organisation we are very grateful to local businesses for the support they give us. In addition, this year, we have received funds from Councillors Avery, Slade and Sneath. Our weekend begins on Friday with our annual bingo night. Doors open at 6.30pm for ‘eyes down’ at 7pm. It is £1 per book and there will be a licensed bar. On Saturday the parade leaves Wimberley Way at 12 noon going down Rotten Row, Brownlow Cres, Bear Lane, Knight Street and back down Rotten Row to the playing field arriving about 12.45pm. Road junctions will be closed as the parade passes and then re-opened. It will be led by our ‘Royalty’ float with our very own Carnival Queen, Molly Smith and Princesses Briony Sweeting and Sigourney Bolton closely followed by a parade of vintage cars. There will be decorated floats plus some lively

African drumming from Kwaku and friends. Back on the field the Carnival will be officially opened at 1pm. As our main arena act this year we welcome back the Galloping Acrobatics. They will perform two different thirty minute horse shows which include skipping horses, equestrian dances and choreographed routines. Also in the arena we have Boston Jive, Kwaku and friends with their African experience, a tug of war competition plus much more. Jan and Chris from Tulip Events will be our compères for the day making sure everything flows smoothly. Weather permitting there will be a flypast of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. There will also be children’s rides, stalls, refreshments and a licensed bar. In the marquee we have a handicrafts competition. As well as crafts, needlework, painting, flower arranging and photographs there are also some cooking categories. Craft schedules are available from the Pinchbeck Community

Hub. You can sit and enjoy an afternoon tea provided by the Penguins Playgroup whilst being serenaded by the The Rocking Chairs. John Derbyshire will also be there to keep the children entertained with his balloon modelling display. The fancy dress competition will be judged at1.15pm and is open to both children and adults. From 6pm until 9pm you will be transported back to the 1960’s and 70’s when local band Retrospekt will be performing in the marquee.

Admission is £3 for adults and £1.50 for children. Excellent value as it covers both the day and evening entertainment. On Sunday, to draw the celebrations to a close there will be a United Church service of worship in the marquee at 10.30am followed by Sunday lunch at 12.30pm. Tickets are £7.50 and need to be purchased in advance from Chris who can be contacted on 01775 680444. Home & property

Windows, Doors & Conservatories

B

uying a new window or door can be tricky, let alone choosing an installation company. But double glazing can last for decades, so it is important to make sure you select a product that will suit your home and a bona fide company that will do the job right. Before you make your final decision, put your company to the test. Here are 10 questions you should ask your installation company before signing up for your new windows and doors to make sure they’re the perfect match: Do you have the style, material or colour I want? Good quality uPVC windows can last over 30 years and aluminium a couple of decades longer, so it is vital to choose a product you like. Don’t settle – you’re going to have to love your new windows and doors for many years to come. Can I custom-make my new windows and doors? All good installers order or manufacture your new double glazing product to your home’s exact measurements. This means that there may be a small wait for your windows or doors to be installed, because they’re busy being made for you personally.

What do you specialise in? There is a lot of choice out there when searching for a double glazing company. Many offer similar product ranges – the trick is to discover which companies are experts in their field. How much experience do you have? Be wary of any company that can’t provide you with a detailed history or profile of their experience. New companies aren’t necessarily bad, but the more testimonials and case studies they can provide, the better. Also, check the company’s credit rating to get an idea of how reliable a business they are. Can I get a feel for my new windows and doors? It’s hard sometimes to make a final decision based on images and colour swatches in catalogues. It would be a lot easier to make a decision if you could see the final result before installation. Check whether your chosen double glazing company has a showroom – this is a fantastic opportunity to see the products close up and get a much clearer idea about how the style, colour and material will suit your property. Is my deposit protected? As well as checking a company’s background,

LINCOLNSHIRE POOLS & SPAS LIMITED

01406 424 504

Luxury Hot Tubs & Swim Spas at affordable prices. We are currently refilling our showroom with new 2017 stock and receiving new spas every week!

it’s important to make sure that your deposit is protected. Reliable installers should offer an Insurance Backed Guarantee – this guarantees your deposit is safe should anything happen to the company before installation begins. This guarantee also ensures the quality of the installation for 10 years after completion. Are your products CE marked? CE marking is an obligatory quality standard meaning that the products are uniform and can be sold throughout Europe. All windows and doors must carry this mark, but unfortunately cheap replicas still flood the market. Ask your installer before sealing the deal and look for the CE logo before installation (it should be on the frame and the glass units). What happens if I need help after the installation? Say you have a question about how to operate or maintain your new windows – can you get back in touch with your installer or are they nowhere to be found?

New 2017 Ford Grand C-Max PROS ‘N’ CONS ➠ Practical ➠ Comfortablee ➠ Efficient ➠ Performance ➠ Perceived image

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS (ST-Line 1.5T Eco 182PS AWD AUTO – as tested)

F

ord’s Grand C-Max is a car designed to carry up to seven people safely and comfortably. It’s got all the things that make life easier. Things such as sliding rear doors that mean the children can get in or out without bashing the doors on walls or other cars. What’s more, the Grand C-Max is roomy inside, with a smart set-up that enables the centre chair in the second row to fold beneath one of the other seats, leaving a space to walk through. I should add, the Grand C-Max Ford loaned me was the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift. Basically, I was handed the top of the range version - the one with all the bells and whistles. However, whether you get the entry level or the top level Grand C-Max, its function is the same – it’s a car that’ll hold lots of people. Granted, the third row of seats are tucked away for most of the time in the boot floor, and even though they’re only for kids, they’re still very handy. There’s also a ‘normal’ Ford C-Max, which is a spacious five-seater - so don’t feel you must go for the ‘Grand’ version. On test, I didn’t need to use the third row all that much, so the two spare seats often remained where they were. This was no bad thing, as without the third tier of seats in operation, the boot stays big. With the seats up, the load area is only good for about three bags of shopping, but with them down, you can knock yourself out filling it up. Not literally, you understand. Standard equipment on the Ford Grand C-Max is generous. It includes Ford’s Quickclear windscreen, sports-style seats, air conditioning and DAB radio. Upgrade to the flagship Titanium X trim and you get a panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon 36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

headlights, a partial leather interior, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and keyless start and entry. There’s also Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system, with an easy-to-read eight-inch touchscreen. But the best thing is that the Grand C-Max is a surprisingly good drive. I say ‘surprising’ because I was a man who used to dislike MPVs because of their apparent dearth of dynamism. The 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift model is smooth and has lots of low down shove. It works particularly well with the sixspeed automatic transmission. In fact, it doesn’t drive like a bus – it behaves just like a decent 2.0 litre turbo diesel car should do. What’s more, it holds the road well, feeling planted on motorways and through twisty sections of tarmac. It’s also got a cheeky punch to it, with the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift variant able to do 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds. It’s efficient, too, consistently doing mid to late 40s real-world mpg.

➠ Max speed: 124 mph ➠ 0-62 mph: 10.7 secs ➠ Combined mpg: 56.5 ➠ Engine layout: 1997cc 4-cylinder turbo diesel ➠ Max. power (PS): 150 ➠ CO2: 129 g/km

Price: £28,865

So, I’ve got to say, as a dad-of-three, I’m impressed. In fact, I’m seriously considering buying the Ford Grand C-Max now I’ve lived with it for a while. I just might not be able to dig deep enough for the flagship version. First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups
