Welcome to the June issue of Simply Spalding I hope everyone enjoyed this years’ Flower Parade? The two floats that stood out for me was Totally Tropical’s water melon and Bertie Bassett who was sponsored by Spalding Energy Company. What was your favourite? We have been busily working in our garden at home in between rain storms to try and create a new ‘chill out’ seating area as well as tidy the borders in the front gardens. I can honestly say I am not green fingered but I am really enjoying getting out there and tidying up - we just need the sun to come out now! This year seems to be once again full of bank holidays with the extra day for the Queens’ Jubilee. What are you planning to do to celebrate her 60 year reign? Make sure you check out page 36 to see what’s happening locally. With Wimbledon looming, you may take inspiration and wish to pick up a racquet - for a guide of how to get involved turn to page 27 where Spalding Tennis Club coach Glenn Perkins offers his advice. As usual, this issue is jam packed full with news of what is happening in and around Spalding as well as all the regulars - Mum Knows Best, School News, Advice from Citizens Advice Bureau, Recipes and Oscar’s Adventures. To keep updated with advice, recipes and what’s on locally visit www.simply-spalding.co.uk. There’s even a for sale section, so you may pick up a bargain too! If you would like to get in touch then please email editor@simply-spalding.co.uk or call me on 0845 676 9295; we always appreciate your feedback and questions.

£8,320 for Spalding town centre cycle route signage and parking New cycle racks and signage for cyclists in Spalding have been approved by South Holland District Council. Funding of £8,320 has been allocated out of Springfields ‘Section 106’ planning money – earmarked for town centre improvements – to pay for the improvements which were requested by Pedals, Spalding’s Cycle Action Group. Pedals had asked for more cycle parking in the town centre and more signage on the cycle route between the town centre and the Springfields Outlet

Shopping and Festival Gardens development. The group looked at existing cycle parking spaces and proposed replacement cycle racks and an extra 26 cycle parking spaces in the town. In partnership with Lincolnshire County Council Highways it estimated that the project would cost £6,800 to replace and provide new racks while improved signing was estimated to cost £1,520. Both schemes are now expected to be completed within three months.

News 23 scouts from Holbeach have made a pledge to get people playing sport The scouts attended a Sport Makers workshop held recently at their scout hut, which inspired them to give something back to the community and volunteer at local sports sessions and events.

and focuses on using skills and talents they may not have known they had. The inspirational workshop the scouts took part in gave them the platform to achieve all of this and more.”

For the scouts completing their Duke of Edinburgh Awards, being a Sport Maker will provide them with increased recognition for what they are doing within the community.

Coordinated by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, Sport Makers aims to inspire 548 people in Lincolnshire to get involved in sport, with each of them spending at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities. It is open to anyone aged 16 and over.

Andy Cowper-Johnson, Duke of Edinburgh Award County Advisor, said: “Participating in the Sport Makers programme not only gets young people helping others in the community, but inspires them to achieve self-belief

“The workshop was really interactive. The Scouts seemed to take a lot from the workshop. I look forward to hearing their stories about what they have done as Sport Makers. “ The next local Sport Maker workshops will be on 7th June at Carres Grammar School, Sleaford, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, and 14th June at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership. To sign up as a Sport Maker, visit www.sportmakers.co.uk. Alternatively, for more information about the workshops, call Lizzie on 01522 585 580.

Lizzie Couling, Workforce Development Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said:

Spalding Tri Club Eleven Spalding Triathletes and an entourage of supporters were undaunted by the unpredictable weather as they made their way to Lincoln for their first Triathlon of the season. Athletes and Spectators alike enjoyed brief spells of sunshine, slightly longer periods of light rain and a short but stimulating hailstorm, during the course of the sprint distance race (400m swim/22k cycle/5k run) There were good results across the board and the Spalding club members were pleased to finally reap the rewards of regular winter swim, bike and run training sessions, courtesy of the Club coaching team. Making their Triathlon debut were Angela and David McGill, who both raced well to finish 8th and 12th respectively in their age groups. Jack Carpenter returned to Lincoln after winning his age group last year, He raced well again, but was squeezed into second place by a margin of just 5 seconds. Tom Drew also took second in his age group after a solid race. Stand out performance of the day was by Aimee Stocker, whose 43min cycle leg was only beaten by 1 women and a small proportion of the men. Aimee also ran a massive personal best 5k to top off a remarkable all round race which

netted her 2nd in her age group and 4th women overall. Mike Staines had a less positive experience, in his own words ‘a nightmare’ Mike, who has previously won his age group in this race, suffered multiple mechanical problems on the only hill on the bike course, overcoming these only to be subjected to a stinging headwind hailstorm. Lack of feeling in his extremities resulted in a run which was several minutes slower than his speedy best. Despite his disappointment, Mike still achieved a credible 3rd in his age group. Mike will return, racing again shortly on a tough Grantham course. Adam Sellars swam well and was in a good position when a puncture forced him to retire on the bike leg. Adam nevertheless went on to complete the 5k run. Andy Chamberlain, Jane Gallagher, Jamie Graham and Alex Cobb all put in solid performances and managed to improve greatly on their previous positions in this race. Spalding Tri Club will be hosting the SPALDING SPRINT TRIATHLON, which takes place at the Castle Sports Centre on June 10th. Entries are now open, more information on spaldingtri.co.uk

School News

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils - Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simply-spalding.co.uk.

Gosberton House School A local school is celebrating its success. Gosberton House School has been rated outstanding by Ofsted in all areas. The quality of teaching, pupil attainment, behaviour and attitudes and leadership have all been rated Outstanding in their recent inspection. The report identified the key areas of strength of the school as…

Teachers know each pupil’s needs and challenges very well indeed and plan lessons that are extremely well targeted on next steps in learning for each pupil. Very occasionally the pace and challenge of a lesson is too easy for a few, for example when everyone in a class is being taught together.

Gosberton House is an outstanding school. All groups of pupils, including boys and girls and those who have the most complex learning needs, achieve extremely well from their starting points on entering the school. This is because the teaching is outstanding overall.

Partnership working with families and other agencies is a real strength of the school. Families say that they have total confidence in the way that the school provides for their children and keeps them safe and used many superlatives such as ‘brilliant’ and ‘wonderful’ to describe the teaching, the care and the leadership team.

Teachers are expert at helping pupils who have autistic spectrum conditions to learn and to self-manage their behaviour. As a result, pupils’ behaviour and their understanding of how to keep themselves safe are excellent. Pupils make significant strides in their willingness to be flexible and in the ways in which they are aware of and take account of others needs.

Leadership and management at all levels are excellent, including that of the Early Years Foundation Stage and outreach service. Excellent leadership of teaching includes highly accurate evaluation of the performance of staff. Leaders analyse the school’s data rigorously to make sure that every pupil has the opportunity to succeed, that their talents are nurtured and their well being secured. They ensure that

an excellent range of experiences promote pupils’ spiritual moral social and cultural development and their personal development exceptionally well. Headteacher, Ms Louise Stanton, said that she was delighted with the outcome. She praised staff, children, families and the local community for their support, commitment and hard work.

Weston Hills CofE Primary May saw Year 3/4 children taking part in a Tennis Tournament organised by Agilitas Sport. For many it was their first experience playing tennis, and it was a very enjoyable day.

Parliament and to go on the London Eye, it is a fantastic day out and one that children will not forget.

during the summer terms. Parents will be coming to a pre-reception evening.

KS2 SAT’s week is nearly upon us – good luck to all those Year 6 children taking part. KS1 children will also be doing SAT’s the following week.

Year 6 children will be attending the Church Schools Festival in Lincoln, again, at the end of May. This is an opportunity to visit Lincoln Cathedral and take part in an organised activity, ours is “Dance” this year.

Our PTA have organised a Fashion Show for this term, and School Discos will take place on the Thursday before we break up.

Our trip to London is organised for the end of May – every two years we take Year 5 & 6 children to London to look round the Houses of

Places for Reception have now been sent out, and we are looking forward to welcoming our new children to three afternoon sessions

Our extra curricular activities this term included a Board Games Club, Guitar, Homework, Taiko Drums, Gymnastics, Drama, Choir, Hoola Hoop, Football, Athletics, Ballet & Change for Life Club.

School News Ayscoughfee Hall School

The start of the Summer term is always an exciting time for the children. The infants are looking forward to their school trips at the end of May. Kindergarten will be visiting Snettisham Farm Park, whilst Reception will be exploring the Sea Life Centre in Hunstanton and the Year 1 class will be enjoying the sunshine (hopefully!) at Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre. The older children are also looking forward to their residential trip to the Hilltop Activity Centre in Norfolk. It has been a busy time on the sports front. The inter house cross country produced several

Little Treasures Nurery

best times with Calypso and Tabitha Priestley winning the under 9 and under 11 girls races respectively. The under 9 boys race was won by Ethan Delaney, with the under 11 won by Keilin Spurdens. The School’s golf team of Hugo and Matide Kedzlie and Archie Davies battled well to finish a highly creditable 4th in the British Heart Foundation Junior Golf Championships. On the football field, Patrick Harrington is justifiably proud and excited to have been selected by the Arsenal Soccer School to play a match at the Emirates stadium. On the rugby front, the tag team are looking forward to playing in the Lincolnshire schools finals at Sleaford Rugby Club on 23rd May, having reached the national finals last year. The school’s musicians are busy practising for their summer concert in aid of Lincs Ark on the evening of 31st May and Adele Fennessy and Lauren Turner have done really well in passing their grade violin exams. The School Council are busy thinking up and organising events to raise funds for the Exotic Pet Refuge. So far, they have held a crisp sale and a quiz, raising £160 to date. Meanwhile, the whole school is looking forward to the Diamond Jubilee “street party” in the playground on 1st June.

After an inspirational training program with Mary Barlow Early Years Consultant and “Nursery Worlds Trainer of the Year” Little Treasures Nurseries Team have enhanced our already well established baby rooms and nursery environment.

in the “Daydreamers Den” that the staff have established allowing them to explore all their senses.

Father’s Day Gift Guide A man’s decision to become a dad has lifealtering costs and benefits. On the cost side, the choice to raise a family often means scaling back many of the activities and interests that defined his life previously, in favour of spending time with the next generation. It also means giving up the freedom to be spontaneous whenever the mood strikes. That said, there’s a reason why men make these sacrifices to don the title of “Dad.” The primal desire to continue the family line is certainly one reason. Considering all of this, taking one day a year to show your appreciation for Dad is the least any good son or daughter can do. While gifts certainly aren’t the only way to show you care on Father’s Day, there’s nothing like the sense of personal satisfaction you can gain from giving a thoughtful item to the most important man in your life. According to askmen.com here are the top 10 gifts for your father this year No.10 Grilling Tools The grill, like a man’s office, is a personal sanctuary where mastery means everything. Your dad may not realise just how many useful tools exist now to help make the grilling experience that much better, so providing him with a BBQ Tool Belt or Stainless Steel Turner Tongs will both educate and impress him. No.9 Alcohol Sometimes nothing can take the edge off of a day of stress and work like a nice stiff drink. Buy your dad top-shelf booze like a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label, or more affordable Bombay Sapphire, and you’ll give him a gift he can enjoy and appreciate with you on Father’s Day. No.8 Fishing Gear The traditionalist in your dad may lead him to believe that fishing is only about a rod, a reel and some line. Once he opens the luxurious handcrafted setl, or even the more reasonably compact fishing rod tote, you’re likely to see his vision of this age-old pastime expand to include his new toys. No.7 A Set of Golf Clubs If your old man considers a round of golf as the closest thing he’s found to heaven on earth, then enhancing his equipment to improve his game is an obvious Father’s Day gift idea. Wow him with a new set of workhorse Ping G15 irons, or add yards to

12

his drive with the Callaway FT-IZ and he’ll think of you every time he hits a great shot. No.6 Leather Wallet A man rarely thinks about the quality or image his wallet projects. After all, it’s tucked out of sight most of the time. Feeling, smelling and looking at the quality of wallets like the Sedgwick Bridle Leather Billfold will quickly make your dad realise just how shoddy his faithful standby is and show him it’s time to retire it. No.5 Wine Good wine is a luxury most men only learn to appreciate and have the means to acquire later in life. So remind your father of the perks of being an experienced dad by supplementing his collection. If a wine shop’s massive selection intimidates you, start with something full-bodied from California – Pinot Noirs from the Russian River Valley and Chardonnays from Sonoma are sure bets. No.4 Driving Gloves Did your dad sell the family car for his own two-door roadster once you left the house for good? If so, then a pair of leather driving gloves will certainly add to his driving experience. No.3 Meat Most men associate the chance to dine on high-quality meat as a luxury only provided by restaurants. There are some excellent mail-order meat establishments that can deliver the same level of quality for your dad to use in his own special recipes to make grilling at home that much more of an experience. No.2 Sports Tickets It sounds sappy, but often great experiences and the memories they create are the only gifts that matter. A pair of tickets for you and your dad to go to a game and support his favourite team is a gift that will wow him and give him something to look forward to once Father’s Day is over.

No.1 Landscaping Services The notion that a man enjoys mastering his domain by slaving away in the hot sun to cut grass, trim hedges and plant becomes less true as guys get older. Reading Corner

by Joanne Phillips of Spalding Library

Adult Read of The Month: Andrea Camilleri – The Wings of the Sphinx If you caught the recent BBC4 series Inspector Montalbano, you will already be familiar with Camilleri’s marvellously quirky characters. The Wings of the Sphinx is the latest novel in the series. When a woman is found dead with half her face shot off, Montalbano solves the crime in his usual seemingly haphazard way. The action takes place in Italy, Sicily to be precise, and Montalbano is a wonderful cynic. The difference is there is a wealth of characters around the Inspector that engage the reader; even the flaws of the villains add a new aspect to the stories. Feel the flavour of Sicily, the Mafia, crooked politicians and eccentricities everywhere. Definitely worth discovering if you haven’t tried this author before, and, if you have, this latest offering will not disappoint.

Junior recommendation: Terry Deary & Martin Brown – Terrible Tudors This is just one of the titles in the Horrible Histories series. These books are educational, but they don’t feel like it, so even the most reluctant reader will enjoy the humour and fantastic illustrations and not realise that they are actually learning anything. This cunning approach covers the whole range of history subjects at primary school. Described as ‘History with the nasty bits left in’ (Amazon.co.uk), it appeals to adults and children alike. There is a popular series on CBBC that dramatises the stories to great effect and history told this way no longer feels dry, dusty or remotely boring. Others in the series cover the Romans, Anglo Saxons, Victorians and World War 1 and 2 – the list is endless. Most titles are available from the library and children may reserve copies for free.

Advice

By John Willoughby

Have you been mis-sold payment protection insurance, if so, do you know that you don’t have to use a Claims management company to get your money back You may have been approached by a claims management company offering to get you a refund of your payment protection insurance. But you don’t need to use one of these companies to claim a refund - you can claim back the money you’re owed yourself. It’s free to claim, you don’t have to pay a fee to anyone and it’s just as quick if you do it yourself. Payment Protection Insurance – or PPI – is insurance you’re sometimes offered when you take out a loan, mortgage, credit or store card. PPI is meant to cover the repayments if you become sick, unemployed, or have an accident. However, you may have been sold a PPI policy which isn’t suitable for you. For example, you could find that your policy only covers people in full-time employment when you’re unemployed, or that you aren’t covered because you have to be below a certain age limit. If you’ve been sold a policy which isn’t suitable, this is called mis-selling. You should be able to cancel the policy and get a refund, although you will probably need to make a claim for this. If you use a claims management company to make a claim, they will take a cut of around 25% from the money you get back, plus VAT. If you make the claim yourself, you will be able to keep all the money you get back. The government has recently said it will try to make claiming PPI refunds simpler and easier. It will also issue advice about not having to use a claims management company to make a claim. There is also a very easy to use step-by-step guide on how to claim on the Money Savings Expert website at www. moneysavingexpert.com. Further information about making a complaint about misselling can be found on the Which website at www.which. co.uk, including a template letter which can be completed online and printed. If you still need more help, you can go to your nearest Citizens Advice Bureau. Below is a check list that Which Magazine have produced to help you decide if you have been mis-sold PPI

Mis-selling checklist

If you can answer ‘no’ to one or more of these questions, then

you may have been mis-sold PPI.

What to do next

• If the insurance was optional, was that made clear to you? • Did the adviser tell you about any significant exclusions under the policy – for example, the exclusion that says you won’t be covered for any pre-existing medical condition? • If you took out a loan or finance agreement, did the adviser make it clear that you would have to pay for the insurance up front in one single payment? • If you had to pay for the PPI as a single payment, did the adviser make it clear that the insurance cost would be added to the loan and you would be paying interest on it? • Single premium PPI insurance normally only lasts for five years. If your loan or finance agreement was for longer than this, did the adviser make it clear that the insurance would run out before you had finished paying for your loan or finance agreement? The adviser should also have told you that you would continue to pay interest on the insurance premium, even after the insurance expired. • If you bought PPI after 14 January 2005 did the adviser try to persuade you to take it out by saying something like ‘we strongly recommend that you consider taking out PPI’. If so, the sale counts as an ‘advised’ sale and they should have issued a ‘demands and needs statement’ to show why a particular policy has been recommended and why it is suitable for you. If they didn’t, this is grounds for complaint.

If you answered ‘no’ to any of the questions in the checklist you should make a formal complaint as you may be entitled to compensation. You can use one of the specimen letters that are available from the 2 websites mentioned earlier OR the one on our website: www.adviceguide.org.uk which also has guidelines on complaining and other examples of when a PPI policy may have been mis-sold.

Citizens Advice Bureau give free, confidential, impartial and independent advice to help you solve your problems. South Holland CAB is open at : Council Offices, Priory Road, Spalding, PE11 2XE Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays 10am – 4pm; Thursdays and Fridays 10am – 1pm Drop in for a short assessment interview during opening hours, prior to being offered an appointment. Remember that your claim is against the company that sold you the insurance. If negotiations with the company fail, you could refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service who have provided the following guidelines: A client complaining to the Financial Ombudsman Service about the sale of payment protection insurance must use a standard complaint document (called a consumer questionnaire) which, along with guidance about how to complete it, can be found on the Financial Ombudsman Service’s website at www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk. Please remember that before you raise a complaint with them, you must have exhausted the complaints procedure of the company who sold you the policy.

The bureau is also open at the following: Parish Offices, 11 West End, Holbeach: Wednesdays: drop-in for 15 minute assessment interviews) Fridays: appointments only:10am – 1pm Market House, Market St, Long Sutton: Mondays (drop-in for 15 minute assessment interviews) Thursdays (appointments only):10am – 1pm

Other menu items include Belvoir Presse and Pipers and Tyrells crisps.

Even the coffee is supplied by Mandy’s coffee of Swineshead and is a blend specially selected by Hills.

Recipes Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese Roulade Serves 4-6

In association with The Black Bull, Donington T:01775 822228 A: 7, Market Place, Donington

Pork Fillet With A Peach & Sausage Meat Stuffing Serves 6-8 Ingredients:

Ingredients:

1 x 200g pack smoked salmon 1 x 300g tub cream cheese Juice & zest of half a lemon Half teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Method:

Lay out a sheet of cling film on the work surface. Arrange the smoked salmon neatly on the cling film to about the size of an A4 sheet of paper, making sure there are no large gaps. Beat the lemon zest & juice along with the parsley and black pepper into the cream cheese until softened and well mixed. Carefully spread the cream cheese mixture over the salmon (patience is key here as the salmon will move with your knife). Using the cling film to help, roll the salmon starting with the longest edge to form a long sausage. Use the cling film to wrap tightly and twist the ends to secure into a tight sausage shape.

1 x pork fillet, trimmed 2 x large Lincolnshire sausages, skins removed 4 rashers thin cut streaky bacon 1 x peach or nectarine, peeled and cut into wedges (tinned peaches are fine)

Method:

Cut your pork fillet lengthways and open it out (be careful not to cut all the way through, you still need your pork in one piece). Season the pork with salt & pepper. Take the Lincolnshire sausage meat and squidge it onto the pork all the way along the cut. Arrange your peach slices on top of the sausage meat then fold the pork back into a fillet shape, enclosing the stuffing.

Refrigerate until needed but is best if it’s had a couple of hours to firm up again.

Wrap the streaky bacon around the fillet, keeping it nice and tight to make sure the stuffing stays inside the pork as you cook it.

Slice with a very sharp serrated knife with the cling film still on, peeling the cling film off the edge before you serve.

Place on a baking tray and roast in a hot oven (180/fan160/gas 6) for approximately 20-25 minutes until the pork is just cooked. Juices should run clear, but be careful not to overcook as the pork will become dry.

Serve with salad leaves and buttered wholemeal bread as a luxurious starter or light lunch.

Serve with oven roasted new potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

Business Focus Fulney Hall - Active Day Care for older People When it comes to choosing day care, your personal needs must take priority. A local, family run business, Fulney Hall offers a care service that’s flexible and tailored to your individual requirements - whether you wish to stay for the whole day or just an hour The friendly team of staff are fully qualified carers with many years of experience working at Halmer Grange Care Home in Spalding. All staff have a minimum NVQ 2 in Care. They will undertake an individual assessment of your day care requirements and will work with you to create a personalised activity care plan.

A homely environment Owner Mandy Crisp chose Fulney Hall as the premises because she wanted a homely environment. This is particularly important for people with dementia. There are two lounges, two conservatories, a dining room and large gardens. At Fulney Hall you will find a safe homely environment which offers comfort, choice and variety. Day care is not about being confined to one room, everyone needs space and has the flexibility to move around the home.

Personalised assessments and activity care plan When a referral is received from an individual, their family or a professional, Fulney Hall undertake an assessment of the person’s needs. This includes: health, interests, personal care, mobility, their reason for attending a day centre.

Who Can Attend • Anyone who would like to attend who is over 60 years old • Fulney Hall is an inclusive service and accommodates individual’s needs in accordance with their referral assessment. • They are currently able to take anyone who is self-funding or receives direct payments.

Activities on Offer Day care is a positive choice for people who want to remain active, meet with friends and enjoy fun and rewarding experiences within a safe, caring and supportive environment. Based in a beautiful period house with extensive gardens, you will find the opportunity here to participate in a wealth of stimulating and enjoyable activities - from craft work, jewellery making, flower arranging and cooking, to painting, dance, gardening, music, reading, games, quizzes, golf and bowling. If you have a particular interest you’d like to pursue, you’ll be encouraged to share it with others.

Promoting Independence & Maintaining Skills Staff at Fulney Hall encourage people to get involved in running their day-centre. Planning and planting the garden, making drinks, laying the tables and deciding on the menus with the cook. This helps to motivate and support self-help skills. But if you want to sit and relax in the sunshine that’s fine too! It’s a person-centred approach to care. Staff take the

time to get to know what individuals like and to celebrate their birthdays. By getting to know someone, staff can support individuals emotionally though life’s challenges.

Out and About Fulney Hall understand that it is difficult for some people to get out and about. They support people to access local shops and gardens, to purchase gifts for family and friends and to attend appointments What’s Included? • Open from 10am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday • £38.00 per day • There is the flexibility to pay by the hour if you require a shorter day. • £10 per hour • A home cooked two course lunch to meet individual dietary requirements and personal preference • Refreshments throughout the day • High staff ratio • All activities and equipment

Making it Easy for People to Attend

Fulney Hall understand that it can be hard for people to make all the arrangements to attend a daycentre. They arrange the travel if this is needed. This is at an additional cost depending on distance and type of vehicle required.

For more information or to arrange a visit, call Mandy Crisp on 01775 722422. Mobile: 07833 173067 69 Holbeach Road, Spalding, Lincs, PE12 6ER Email: spaldingcareserviceslimited@gmail.com

Keeping everyone happy in the garden can be a tricky job but with some careful thought both adults and children can enjoy your outdoor space. Zones Designers often advise splitting up the

garden so adults can have their own childrenfree space but often this is not how families work: small children will want to be where you are and older ones will want to use the whole garden. Why not think about making the adults’ area big enough to allow toddlers to play there, too. Decking is ideal for this as it makes a softer landing than paving and provides a smooth, level surface for wheeled toys. It’s cheaper than breaking up old concrete and, as long as you choose FSC timber, is the best eco choice.

Grass If you can spare a patch about 8m

square you can incorporate a ball-kicking area – anything smaller and children struggle to get a run at the ball. As long as it’s not shady it can be grassed over but use a hard-wearing seed

mix. A lawn can also become a place to pitch tents and to have picnics for those ‘adventure days’.

Play gear Children often tire of garden toys, think about having climbing frames passed on from older family members or who you can pass it on to. The slide has been the biggest hit and with a limited budget is ideal along with a swing or trampoline. Ensure there’s a soft landing for the inevitable falls.

Play spaces The most successful

places for play are often the ones where children can create their own games or stories. How about have areas for building, digging and water play?

Your Guide to Tennis by Glenn Perkins, Coach at Spalding Tennis Club

With Wimbledon not too far away it may be just the time to think about taking up the traditional British sport. We spoke to coach Glenn Perkins at Spalding Lawn Tennis club to get the lowdown on the sport for you. Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racket that is strung to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over a net into the opponent’s court. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society at all ages. Tennis is enjoyed by millions of recreational players and is also a hugely popular worldwide spectator sport, especially the four Grand Slam tournaments: the Australian Open played on hard courts, the French Open played on red clay courts, Wimbledon played on grass courts, and the US Open played also on hard courts. The match The outcome of a tennis match is determined through a best of three or five sets system. On the professional circuit, men play best-of-five-set matches at all four Grand Slam tournaments, Davis Cup, and the final of the Olympic Games and best-of-three-set matches at all other tournaments, while women play best-of-three-set matches at all tournaments. For men, the first player to win three sets wins the match, and for women, the first player to win two sets wins the match. A set consists of games, and games, in turn, consist of points. Age groups and abilities. Mini Tennis is a fun way for anyone aged between four and 10 years to get a feel for the game. Britain’s Tim Henman who learnt his skills on a Mini Tennis court says: “Mini Tennis is a fun and easy way of playing tennis. The more kids that take up the game, the more chance we have of winning Wimbledon one day.”

PIC: Spalding Town Tennis Coach Glenn Perkins

Mini Tennis has been designed to allow young players to develop at a speed that suits them. There are three distinct colour coded stages in the sequence of traffic lights - red, orange and green. Starting with red, kids play on small courts with mini racquets and sponge balls. As players progress, the court size and racquet length increase making the game faster and faster. Mini tennis red: up to 7 years of age. Mini tennis orange: 7-8 years of age. Mini tennis green: 9-10 years of age. Mull tennis: 10+ years My Profile I started playing tennis at the age of 3 at Spalding ParksideTennis Club with my parents, as they both played there. I then started having lessons at the tennis club with the local coach at the time Val Tayles. I have progressed through all of the mini tennis stages in group lessons and when I hit the age of 10 I started having individual lessons. When I got to a respectable standard I started entering tournaments for my specific age group. When I got to the age of 16 I stopped having coaching and started coaching myself doing both individual lessons and group lessons for all age groups. I am currently a level 2 coach. I started playing competitive matches for Spalding at the age of 13 for our 2nd team and the following season I was in the 1st team. I am still interested in tennis as I enjoy coaching the juniors and adults and seeing their abilities progress. I also enjoy the

sport competitively and socially and it is also a good way to keep fit. Get Involved Spalding tennis club has 6 courts, 3 of the courts are floodlit. The club has 9 different teams which ranges from ladies, men and mixed teams who play in a variety of leagues. Club nights are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for any member of the club to attend and this starts from 6:30pm. There is also a mens morning for members at 10.30am on Saturdays.

If you would like to enquire about coaching that Glenn can offer call 07903 001510 or contact Mary Burgess if you are interested in becoming a member of Spalding Town Tennis Club on 01775 768156. Spalding Tennis Club, Hollyrood Walk, Spalding. PE11 2RY

PUPPY POWER Tell someone: “We’re geTTing a puppy,” and you’ll see faces lighT up. ThaT cuTe clumsiness Warms The hardesT of hearTs and brings smiles To Those old and young. Once the decision has been made to get a puppy, an abundance of questions soon follow:

WhaT kind of puppy do We WanT and Where do We geT one? The energy level and size of the dog you choose should reflect both your lifestyle and living environment. Getting a big dog in a small house could spell disaster. And if you lead a more sedate life, be honest and pick a less energetic dog over a working breed. If you have your heart set on a certain breed you may want to approach a breeder, but don’t forget that your perfect pooch – while maybe not a pedigree – might just be waiting for you at a local rescue centre. Our website has a list of both breeders and rescue centres to help you.

preparing The home Before you bring your new puppy home, take a look around your house and see things from a puppy’s perspective: Where can I pee? What can I chew? Is this good to eat? Consider the unexpected. Decide on ground rules as a family before bringing your new addition home. For example; do you let them on the sofa, or on your bed?. Once you’ve decided - stick to it!

feeding Find out what food your puppy is used to eating and try not to make any sudden changes to their usual regime. Any changes to diet should be made gradually; mixing the new food in with the food they are used to over a period of a week or two to avoid any tummy upsets. A range of foods especially tailored to the unique dietary requirements of puppies is now available and your vet or our friendly staff can help you make the right choice.

Your visits to the vet are also an important time to ask questions relating to your dog’s health and being a responsible dog owner. Use this time to consult your vet on neutering and spaying your pet and request that your new buddy be microchipped to ensure accurate identification.

Training & socialisaTion Get with the programme! Training is an essential ingredient to developing a strong bond with your pet and persistence will result in a dog that is responsive and safe in critical situations. Puppies need to be socialised with other dogs to understand the proper way to behave and learn manners from more mature dogs. However, check with your vet as to when they are ready to go out into the real world. You need to ensure their vaccinations are providing them with the protection they need, before they go out to meet and greet. Toilet training strikes fear into the heart of many, but the key here is patience. Take your puppy outside for breaks often, even if it means getting up at unearthly hours! And praise them when they do their business outside. When indoor accidents occur, don’t make a big fuss – these things will happen – but learn from your pet’s subtle cues and encourage them to go to the door or ‘speak’ to you to let you know they need to go. Getting a new puppy is an exciting time; it is demanding, but worth it! Get the basics right and you’ll be sure to have a well trained best friend for many years! Feel free to pop in store and ask us for any advice you need, from feeding and grooming, to training and worming.

VaccinaTions & VeT VisiTs An important part of being a dog owner is ensuring your pet is properly protected against disease and infection. Your puppy’s vaccination regime begins at 8 weeks of age when they receive their first injections to immunise them against Canine Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis and a range of other diseases. They then have a booster at 10 weeks. They will also follow a worming program at 2,4,6,8,10 and 12 weeks of age and then at 2 -3 monthly intervals thereafter.

Spalding Hockey Club’s Annual Dinner and Presentation Evening A record 157 members and guests filled the South Holland Centre on Friday 13th April for Spalding Hockey Club’s Annual Dinner and Presentation Evening. The evening was opened with a presentation and a minute’s applause for the Club’s larger than life goalkeeper Paul Howden who sadly passed away in January. Paul was a big man, a big personality and a huge gap has beeen left in the Club and the lives of its players. Reports on an extremely successful season for all the three Ladies teams and the under 16 girls followed. The Ladies 1st team added the Cambs Premier League title to their Lincolnshire County sucess and hope to make it a unique triple when they play Newmarket in the Cambs Premier Cup Final on Saturday. The Ladies 2nd and 3rd teams finished runners up and third in the Cambs Leagues 1 and 2 respectively. The girls under 16 team won through to the Midlands Finals with some excellent wins in the group stage and narrowly missed out on a place in the national finals on goal difference alone. The Men’s teams also enjoyed an excellent season with the Men’s 1st team scoring a massive 129 goals but still missing out on promotion by just one point. The Men’s 2nd finished in a creditable 5th place with the 3rd team just one point off promotion to join their league. The Club’s 4th and 5th Development teams provided a good starting point for many of the Club’s talented young players and the experience gained will prove valuable in next season’s league programme. A raffle, organised by Clubman Matthew Pilgrim, made in excess of £1000 and the money will go towards dugouts and shelters at the Glen Park pitch. Matthew is running in the London Marathon for the first time on Sunday and took his sponsorship money for Cancer Research to over £3000 during the evening. The Club has activities running through the summer months so please visit their website www.spaldinghockeyclub.co.uk for the latest news

Communities across our district will also be joining in with the rest of the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Mann and Commonwealth countries around the world by lighting a network of 2,012 beacons.

She received the news while staying in a remote part of Kenya and had to abandon the rest of the tour to fly home. The young princess returned to Britain as Queen, where she was Photograph By John Swannell, greeted by officials Camera Press London including Prime Mininster Winston Churchill at the airport.

This country has a long tradition of celebrating royal jubilees, weddings and coronations with the lighting of beacons on top of hills, church towers, castle battlements, country parks and beaches. And so far residents in Holbeach, Long Sutton, Crowland, Pinchbeck and Surfleet have pledged to take part. Beacons were also lit in 1977 and 2002 to mark the Queen’s silver and golden jubilees. On June 5 there will a special church service at St Paul’s Cathedral followed by a carriage procession to Buckingham Palace, a balcony appearance by members of the Royal Family

Her coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953, and was described as a solemn ceremony, conducted by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Geoffrey Fisher. Crowds lined the streets to watch the procession all along the route, despite heavy rain. The ceremony was also broadcast on the radio, around the world and for the first time, at the Queen’s request it was televised. Councillor Nick Worth, executive member for community development, said: “The last time an occasion of this magnitude happened was in the days of Queen Victoria. It will not happen again in our lifetime and is an event that you can all join in, that will make you proud to be British. “It is a wonderful opportunity to fly the flag, to generate real community spirit in our local villages and towns by putting on street parties, fetes and unique events that only the British could do.” Grants are also available for street parties and community events from a number of organisations including the district council’s Designated Budget Scheme. Visit www.sholland. gov.uk/leisure/TheQueensDiamondJubilee2012 to find out more. One set of new parents will be able to mark the Jubilee in style thanks to Holbeach couple Alison and Graham Richardson, who have made a one-off, luxury baby carriage to mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. The Richardsons, who run Alison’s Baby Carriages specialising in the restoration of coachbuilt prams, are now selling the bespoke Silver Cross one-off, which features red, white and blue Union Jack trim, plus ‘diamond’ studs along the sides and hope to get a four-figure sum for it. Mrs Richardson, who takes on the work of repairing the upholstery while her husband deals with the engineering side, hopes a couple expecting this summer will snap up the limited edition set of wheels and added that a certificate of authenticity can be provided to accompany it. The Richardsons have been restoring, repairing and selling vintage, antique and historic coachbuilt prams for more than ten years and also hire out some of their massive collection

to film and TV companies. Most recently they sold ten of their prams to the BBC for its new drama Call the Midwife, set in 1950s East End of London. The couple are no strangers to creating luxury prams - back in 2008 their gold plated Silver Cross pram fetched £6,000 when sold in Harrods. Laddies Ice Cream is flying the flag with a patriotic red, white and blue ice-cream treat for its customers this summer in recognition of the Jubilee and the Olympics. The family firm based in Holbeach’s Church Street is celebrating its own landmark this year as it has been selling homemade ice-cream in the town for 90 years. Current owner and fourth generation ice-cream maker Richard Ladbrook has come up with an Olympic torch cone filled with a trio of strawberry, vanilla and blueberry flavours topped with a wafer to recognise the 2012 games. As an extra treat for customers Mr Ladbrook and his team are also working on a special flavour to mark the Queen’s 60th anniversary on the throne. The first Laddies ice was made and sold in the summer of 1922 by Mr Ladbrook’s grandfather William and since then the homemade brand has gone from strength to strength

drawing generations of customers back from far and wide.

Flooring - Is it time for a Change?

By Kate Tarrant

In my household at the moment, flooring is the hot topic. What a rock n roll lifestyle you lead, I hear you cry. But after three years of living with the same carpets and tiles that were put down over 20 years ago, I think we’re well due a change. But where do you start? Laminate, carpet, tile, vinyl, stone, hardwood – the options are endless! Getting started To help take the stress out of the situation – and help inspire others along the way – this month we’ve put together some ideas to get the creative juices flowing. Carpets Carpets are ideal for creating a warm, snug feel in the house – perfect for living rooms, dining rooms, hall stairs landings and bedrooms. When choosing your carpet, remember to think about what you need it to do. For example, if it’s for your living room or hall/stairs and landing these are rooms that get used a lot, you’ll want to aim for a carpet that can take more wear and tear than say a bedroom. As a rule of thumb, try to go for the best quality carpet that you can afford with a good quality underlay that will provide good sound and heat insulation. If you have under-floor heating, there

are underlays and low tog rating carpets available. Ask your local flooring specialist for advice. It’s also worth thinking about practicalities. You may love the look of luxurious white or cream carpeting, but would it be practical in a home with children, teenagers and pets? Do you have a colour scheme? A carpet is an important investment for your home – think about whether fancy patterns and bright colours will still be to your taste in 5 years’ time? Do you have any future decorating plans that need to be considered? If you don’t want to replace your carpets, but still want to revamp your flooring, why not get them professionally cleaned? This can breathe new life into them – and save

you some money along the way. Vinyl A vinyl floor is a very practical, low cost option for kitchens, utilities, conservatories and bathrooms. It’s easy to clean and warm underfoot. There are so many designs and colours available eg: tiles, metallic and wood. Most vinyls have non-slip properties. Tiles The tiling option is great if you want to break up your flooring, and create an impact. It’s ideal for areas that you want to be able to wash clean – bathrooms, kitchens, conservatories, utilities – and can really emphasise the illusion of space. You can get creative with tiles, with so many colours and sizes to choose from – whether you go for ceramic, slate or stone, and whether you’re aiming for a traditional or contemporary style.

Remember to think about non-slip properties, particularly in areas that may get wet. Solutions include tiles with rougher or more textured surfaces, or choosing smaller tiles where the grout joints create extra grip. The amount of wear the floor will receive must also be considered, so make sure you get advice on the durability of the tiles you’re choosing. When it comes to colours and patterns, the same rules with carpets applies – think about your long-term plans. If you’re renovating your home with the view to selling, busy patterns and colours might not be to everyone’s taste. If the floor is in an area where outdoor shoes are going to be trudging through – for example, utilities, conservatories, hallways to the backdoor etc – it may be preferable to choose a darker floor colour.

Have you thought about half carpet and half tiles? This is a very popular option to break up rooms and spaces.

boast a higher strength and durability compared to a solid wooden floor, and it’s very easy to install.

Tiles can be cold, and if your budget does not allow for under-floor heating, this can be a factor you need to consider when choosing where to put tiles.

If you know you want a wooden floor but don’t know whether to go for real wood or an alternative, talk to your local flooring specialist and get some professional advice on the options that best suit your individual needs.

Wooden flooring A wooden floor really makes a statement – it makes a room look spacious, contemporary and fills your home with character. On the practical side of things, it is also easy to clean. If you’re looking for a floor to cope with a busy load, be sure to choose a harder wood that will cope with the wear and tear. Examples include oak, ash or maple. Although a real wooden floor can look really stylish, it can be expensive. Alternatives include wood laminate, engineered wood flooring and luxury vinyl planks. Laminate wood flooring is the cheaper option – a good quality laminate can look just like a real wooden floor and is less likely to scratch. Engineered wood flooring does, however,

Choosing flooring • Think about the colour of your flooring – paler colours create a sense of space, whereas busy patterns and dark colours have the opposite effect. Going for plainer colours means you can jazz up the colour of the house in other ways. • Think about the purpose of the room – do you want to create a warm feel? Will there be lots of traffic? Do you need the flooring to be hard wearing? Does it need to be easy to clean? • Take away samples of some options that you like – try them out on the floor, looking at them at different times of the day. • Set a budget before you start shopping!

Pinchbeck Carnival

By Jane Amess

Olympic fever is hitting Pinchbeck! That is the theme for Pinchbeck’s Carnival this year. East and West Pinchbeck villagers will join together for three days of community fun centred around the carnival marquee in the Rotten Row playing field from 8th June to 10th June. It will be led by South Holland’s official Olympic torch bearers closely followed by the Tally Ho marching band who will be doing a display in the arena. Also in the parade will be our very own Carnival Queen, The aim of the Carnival Association has always been to Lisa Bovington, and Princesses entertain the public with the added bonus of allowing village clubs and organisations an event where they can raise Robyn Carpenter and Phoebe Wright together with Spalding Flower money for their own funds. As we are a non-profit making Queen, Amy Harrison. All will be organisation we are very grateful to local businesses for the riding in cars provided by Rylatt Ford. support that they give us. In addition, this year we have There will also be decorated floats received funds from local councillors and the ‘Silver Spirit’ and representatives from the many fund. local sports clubs. County Councillor It will be ‘eyes down’ on Friday night with a prize bingo which Stephen Williams and Mrs Williams will judge the floats and two representatives from the ‘Silver Spirit’ fund will judge opens at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. It is £1 per book and there the stalls. will be a licensed bar. In 1977 Councillor Nobby Walker and his band of helpers organised Pinchbeck’s first Carnival to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. However, it would be five years before the next carnival was held in 1982 and it is still going strong.

On Saturday, following health and safety concerns, the parade will follow a different route, starting in Pennytoft Lane at 12 noon, going up Rose Lane, Church Street, Knight Street and Rotten Row, arriving at the field about 12.45pm.

Back on the field, the Carnival will be officially opened at 1pm by Janet Daniels, Head Teacher at the Sir John Gleed School. There will be a fancy dress competition, handicrafts show, children’s rides and games plus many stalls. In the

arena we will be entertained by a fencing display, zumba, (with audience participation), The Tally Ho Band, hula-hoops, Spalding School of Dance and there will also be live music. Children from West Pinchbeck School will be singing in the marquee. Jan and Chris from Tulip Radio will be our comperes for the day making sure everything flows smoothly. During the afternoon we also have a dakota from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight who will be doing a fly past. The popular ‘Has Pinchbeck Got Talent’ show will start at 5pm. Entry forms are available from Tulip Radio or Sally Sneath on 01775 640368. There will be a combined church service in the marquee on Sunday at 10.30am. Sunday lunch will be served at 12.30pm at a cost of £7 but tickets need to be purchased in advance. You can get your tickets from Pinchbeck Library which is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am until 4pm, but they close for lunch from 1pm – 2pm, or by ringing Chris Schofield on 01775 680444 or Sally Sneath. On Tuesday 5th June Pinchbeck is celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by holding a Picnic in the Park from 3 – 7pm on the Glebe field, which is behind the library. Bring your own food, drink and something to sit on, gazebos, tables and chairs welcome. There will be games and races from 3.30pm and a fun tug of war at 6pm - you just need a team of six. A brass band will be providing entertainment and there will be a licensed bar. On Monday 4th June St Mary’s Church are having their own Diamond Jubilee celebrations. They are holding a street part on the church path at 3.30pm for 4pm. You need to take a plate of food to share and your drinks. There will be a concert of ‘Music from the Last 60 years’ at 7pm, followed by supper. The church bells will be rung from about 8.30pm until 9pm. A Jubilee Beacon will be lit between 9.30 – 10.30pm. For further details, and to book your chairs, call Pat Lake on 01775 724487 or Aileen Workman on 07980 436097. Dress up if you wish. (Thanks to Jan Whitbourn of Tulip Radio for the photos.)

Motoring

Mitsubishi i-MiEV

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk Twitter: @carwriteups THIS TINY electric car terrified me. I was so stressed driving it at first - not because it was a pig to drive or anything – I was just so paranoid I’d run out of power and not find a socket to charge the little i-MiEV up. It’s fine if you live in London - the trendy heart of green transportation. There are bikes and city cars to hire and electric sockets to plug your vehicle into all over the place. Birmingham has even got a few charging points now and, I dare say, so have some other major cities. But if, like me, you live in a fairly nondescript town somewhere in Northamptonshire then your options, aside from your electricity supply at home, are fairly limited. Take this week. I needed to drive from Kettering (oops, I’ve let the cat out of the bag) to Leicester for a meeting at a radio station. Everyone clucked over the “cool looking” i-MiEV in the car park. I couldn’t disagree – my test vehicle was cloaked in matt black with a cream leather interior. But what really unnerved me was the trip back home. You see, I’d stuck my foot down on the 20 mile trip there, and on the return leg my right foot was pretty heavy again. I soon lifted it off the gas (I mean electricity), when I noticed the ‘fuel’ gauge, or in this case the charge gauge, was down to one bar – and then, all of a sudden, it was flashing zero. Help! At this point I decided to lift my foot off the accelerator pedal. This lets the motor operate as a power generator and the car’s motion energy is converted to electricity which charges the traction battery. This is known as’ regenerative braking’. The feeling is similar to the one you get when you engine

42

brake going through the gears in a manual ‘normal’ car. It’s clever stuff. And it’s needed. It got me home – just! You see, the i-MiEV has only got a maximum range of 90 miles – and that’s if you drive it cautiously. That’s the downside if you venture too far from home without checking if there are any public charging facilities en route. If you don’t tend to travel too far for a single journey this is a perfect option for you as the upside is that it has zero emissions, so you don’t pay any road tax. It’s also very cheap to run – obviously! Inside, the mini Mitsubishi is surprisingly spacious and the boot is not bad either. Behind the wheel, the electric car is nippy and fun. It can handle 70 mph easily on the motorways, but around town is where it feels the best. It zips from here to there with ease, and parking the i-MiEV is a piece of cake. At first, it takes a little bit of thought about the best gear to be in. The car has a few drive positions, you see: D (for city driving); B (for going downhill) and C (for comfortable driving). B is a good mode to be if you live in undulating surroundings because it increases the Mitsubishi’s usability on hills, and gives stronger regenerative braking than the D position.

Yes, all in all, despite the initial worry of running out of power, I enjoyed my time with the i-MiEV. It looked pretty cute sat on my drive hooked up to my garage’s power socket – and, on the road, I soon got used to the eerie silence of not having an internal combustion engine under the bonnet. I can certainly say that Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV is a world away from the first electric vehicle I ever clapped eyes on - the once familiar, but now increasingly rare, milk float!

This month I have been out and about in Cambridge for a day ‘shopping’. Whilst shopping is not the most exciting thing for me, I really enjoyed walking along the riverside and through the parks. We parked near to the registery office and so walked in over the main bridge. I have been working hard on my training, especially on my obedience and walking to heal and this was a great test for me. If you fancy trying to teach your puppy or dog, this is how I learned. The training process is much the same for a puppy or dog – it just takes longer to June 2010 AV:Layout 1 22/5/10 09:54 teach a dog who’s already learned that pulling on the lead is a fun thing to do – even if they seem to be choking themselves! Start off in a quiet place in

www.t witter.com/oscaradventures the house and simply lure your dog to your leg and give them a treat. Take a step, give another treat. Take two steps and another treat (or click and treat). Take several steps and give a treat. Repeat this quite a bit before using a lead. Then repeat the process with the lead on. If they do try to pull on the lead, just stand still, holding the lead. Don’t play tug of war. Simply stand still. As soon as your dog stops pulling then say “good” and give them a treat. When your dog no longer pulls on the lead around the house and garden, or when they at least understand the game a little, then go for a walk. Walk slowly, practising both luring your dog to your leg and also standing still when they pull. Continue to reward them as above, each time they stop pulling or walk to heel. Gradually building up the number of steps you can take without them pulling on the lead.

rewarding as being by your side. But, work slowly, gradually building up the training, and don’t expect miracles. It has taken me about 3 months to get to a point where I was trusted to be taken to a busy area, so keep at it and hopefully we can have all the Spalding dogs well trained and no more lead pulling!

Woof, Woof! X

Doesn’t it all sound so simple? Well, with lots of training practice and consistency, your dog should learn that pulling on the lead is not nearly as
