July is a lovely month, sunshine, school holidays and long days! What have you got planned to entertain the children over the summer holidays? If you’re looking for inspiration then make sure you look at our days out guide. I would like to say a massive well done and thank you to Worth Farms for opening their ‘doors’ on Open Farm Sunday. We popped down as a family and had a brilliant few hours - my son especially being able to climb in and out all of the machinery. We are exploring Moulton this month with resident canine columnist Otis, and Annette from The Village Midwives talks about people perception and I talk about all things vintage. We also look at looking after your hair over the summer months and the benefits of massage for all ages. As much as I hate to say it as I am definitely a summer lover, we need to make the most of the long days and good weather as it soon will be gone and back to cooler days, so we have looked at how to make the most of your outdoor space this summer. Finally, Tim has taken the Isuzu D-Max for a spin to see how it stands up! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

Pilot project will teach students about modern slavery Boston College will become the first college in the UK to join forces with the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) to teach students about modern slavery and labour exploitation within its curriculum. The pilot project for the 2018-19 academic year will see a number of activities taking place from September, helping students gain a better understanding of modern slavery and labour exploitation. Masterclasses will be held with professionals giving their insights on the work to tackle modern slavery and support victims. Tutorials will be created for staff and students, who will be equipped with a comprehensive knowledge of employment rights. They will also take part in a unique visual art competition interpreting the term ‘gangmaster’. The project, which supports the GLAA’s Prevent strategy, will reach out to local employers to help them better understand labour exploitation in the

workplace. A launch event was held at the college on Friday 1 June, with attendees including Minister for Crime, Safeguarding, Vulnerability and Women Victoria Atkins, Member of Parliament for Boston and Skegness Matt Warman, and Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner Marc Jones. Dawn Telford, Head of Learner Services at Boston College, said: “This new partnership will provide opportunities for not only our learners, but also for staff and parents to learn about issues of modern slavery and labour exploitation. “It is important our learners understand their rights in the workplace, and by providing this information it safeguards our young people who will be moving in to employment. “Boston and surrounding areas such as South Holland have a historically high concentration of gangmasters serving the agricultural and food processing sectors. “Over the last 15 years, the area has also seen

significant levels of migration from other EU countries, especially Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. This has meant that more than one quarter of students studying at the college come from a nonBritish background.” GLAA Director of Strategy Darryl Dixon said: “We are delighted to be working with Boston College on this ground-breaking initiative. The college is perfectly placed within its community to raise awareness of modern slavery and labour abuse, as well as being able to take appropriate action to help anyone who may have been exploited.” Minister for Crime, Safeguarding, Vulnerability and Women Victoria Atkins said: “I am pleased that the GLAA and Boston College have created a course which will help raise awareness and build a stronger insight to effectively tackle this awful crime. “This government is taking a world leading approach, by using the Modern Slavery Act and reforms to the GLAA, to provide law enforcement the powers they need to identify victims, protect vulnerable people and bring offenders to justice. “The GLAA has played a pivotal role in our fight against exploitation by using its new powers to investigate labour market offences, arrest employers who may unscrupulously be exploiting their workers, and identify and refer potential victims through the National Referral Mechanism to ensure the right support is given to those in need.” At the end of the project, the GLAA will make a range of educational resources for all other colleges and post-16 education providers across the UK freely available. If you have concerns about labour exploitation, speak to the GLAA’s intelligence team on 0800 432 0804 or email intelligence@ glaa.gsi.gov.uk. Alternatively, call the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.

Then call the experts to find out how we can help to put a smile back on your face. 'We are passionate about helping you to hear better.' ❖ ❖ ❖

Love Local and support services charities Support is being drummed up for two armed forces charities in a fundraising campaign by Lincolnshire Co-op, together with local producers. As the RAF marks its 100th birthday this year, and to recognise the dedication of service people past and present, Lincolnshire Co-op is raising money for the Royal British Legion and the RAF Benevolent Fund. The charities will be supported through the Society’s Community Champions scheme throughout summer. Money raised for both charities will help them care for forces families, serving personnel and veterans who need help with a range of issues including funeral costs, debt, housing, mobility problems and medical care, and help train others to support them. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Coordinator Ryan Hodson said: “In Lincolnshire, the community around us is closely linked with the armed forces, and the charities we’re supporting do an important job caring for the health and wellbeing of service people past and present. We hope that by holding these activities, events and fundraising in our outlets together we can recognise the work they do and raise funds to help them continue it.” A donation will be made every time members shop in Lincolnshire Co-op stores using their dividend card. Colleague fundraising and proceeds from the carrier bag levy will also go into the pot. Lincolnshire Co-op food stores stock a range of local produce through the Society’s Love Local range, and some of these producers are also celebrating with specially created forces-themed goods. For each sale of these products 10p will also be donated through the scheme. They are: • Red Leicester Bastion in the Air cheese, made by the Grinstead family at Lymn Bank Farm near Skegness. • Bastion Pale Ale, brewed by Ferry Ales Brewery in Fiskerton. • Dambusters Beer Chutney, made by Jenny’s Jams of Lincoln.

• Cupcakes produced by Lincolnshire Co-op’s bakery Gadsby’s during the summer. Ferry Ales Brewery’s Bastion Pale Ale has been brewed to promote the “Bastion in the Air” project which is raising awareness of Lincolnshire’s First World War aviation heritage. Ferry Ales Brewery’s Co-owner Mike Holman said: “It’s great to be supporting causes that help so many local people in Lincolnshire. The armed forces are close to our hearts and we’re thrilled to be involved.” There’ll be fundraising in lots of other ways at Lincolnshire Co-op outlets, including the chance to win a once in a lifetime trip on the Tornado Steam Locomotive from Lincoln to London. To enter, just have a go at the anagram competition at selected Lincolnshire Co-op stores. Customers can test their flying skills by taking part in a paper airplane competition and other games in Lincolnshire Co-op food stores during Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30th June - all in return for a small donation. Money has also been raised in June through a ‘guess where the teddy is’ game at Lincolnshire Co-op travel branches and ‘guess the teddy’s name’ at its funeral homes. There’ll also be three free summer food

events in Chapel St Leonards, Scunthorpe and Washingborough where Lincolnshire Co-op members can donate by taking part in games and the chance to win a food hamper, along with sampling tasty food and live 1940s style music. There’s no need to book, just bring your dividend card to sign in. More fundraising will come from collection boxes located in all stores where customers can donate whatever spare change they like. Regional Director for the RAF Benevolent Fund Mark Quinn said: “We are delighted that in this seminal year Lincolnshire Co-op have chosen to raise funds for the RAF family. We are extremely grateful to all involved for choosing to support the charity. “It is support like this which means the Fund has been able to stand side by side with the RAF for almost 100 years, offering financial, emotional and practical assistance when current and ex-service people need it most. “ Regional Fundraising Manager for the East Royal British Legion Jo Ticehurst said: “We are very excited and feel privileged to be chosen as a Community Champion until September. “It’s set to be a special year in Lincolnshire as combined with RAF 100, there’s lots to celebrate in the county this summer. We look forward to working with Lincolnshire Co-op raising funds and awareness for those who served and are still serving who need our help today.”

Advice

How to deal with mortgage debts If you’ve been struggling to keep up your mortgage payments, you may have started to build up a debt. You may have missed one or more monthly payments or be paying less money each month than you owe. You will need to work out a way to pay back what you owe. If you don’t and the debt continues to build up, your lender will take you to court and you may end up losing your home. Some of the things you might be able to do to pay back the money you owe on your mortgage payments. These include: •making extra payments on top of your usual monthly payments •adding what you owe to your capital •giving up your endowment policy to raise extra cash •borrowing money to raise extra cash •cashing in a mortgage payment protection insurance policy. You may have other options for dealing with your mortgage debts than the ones mentioned. If you don’t have any options for paying off your debt or can’t reach an agreement with your mortgage lender, you should get help from an experienced debt

adviser straight away. Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance If you’ve lost your job or had a temporary loss of income, check whether you have mortgage payment protection insurance (MPPI). You may have taken a policy out at the same time as you got your mortgage or afterwards. The MPPI policy may cover your mortgage payments if you can’t work because of unemployment or sickness. There are lots of circumstances in which, even if you have a payment protection policy, it won’t pay out. You will need to check the terms and conditions of your policy carefully to see if you are covered. You may need to get advice about this. Adding what you owe to your capital You might be able to clear your mortgage payments debt by adding the money you owe to your capital (the amount you borrowed) and paying it back over the remaining period of the mortgage. This is known as capitalising the arrears. You could also ask to extend the term of the mortgage in order to keep your monthly payments down, although you

will end up paying a much larger amount in total. Looking at your budget If you’ve fallen behind with your mortgage payments, you will need to take a good look at your household budget. This will tell you if you’ve got any money left over which you can use to pay off your debt. You will need to make a list of all the money you’ve got coming in and all the money going out of your household. This should include any other debts you owe. Make sure that the amounts you put down are realistic. Think seriously about whether it’s possible to increase the money you’ve got coming in or make cutbacks on your spending. For example you may be able to: •claim benefits or tax credits •work overtime or take a second job •take in a lodger or rent out a room in your home •reduce the cost of household bills like water, gas, electricity or insurance. There are lots of different ways to boost your income and spend less on your outgoings. You should also get help if you’ve started getting letters from your mortgage lender threatening court action. An experienced debt adviser can help you work out how much money you’ve got to pay off a mortgage debt and any other debts you owe. They can also advise you about ways of increasing your income and spending less money.

Weston Hills CofE Primary School It is difficult to believe that we are nearly at the end of another academic year! Year 6 children have been completing their Key Stage 2 SAT’s, as have Key Stage 1 children. Year 1 children will be having a Phonics test this term. Our Year 6 leavers will be attending taster days at their new secondary schools this term and we wish them luck in their new schools. A new parents evening for children starting in Reception in September 2018 has taken place, and we have new intake afternoons arranged throughout Term 6. Class 4 have an end of year trip arranged to Banham Zoo, and Year 6 children will be attending the Church Schools Festival in Lincoln. Year 6 children will also be having visits in school from Max Respect (Lincolnshire Transport) and a Substance Misuse Workshop. During June and July we have children in from local secondary schools on Work Experience. We will also be holding Internet Safety Assembly for parents and children which will be delivered by Mrs. Alexander. Class 3 & 4 children will be undertaking the Knex Challenge in when a STEM Ambassador will come into school to help organise

and judge. 26th June is our Sports Day – we are hoping for good weather! Our Year 6 leavers will be having a Leavers church Service on 19th July, followed by their Leavers BBQ. The Leavers Assembly (parents are invited) will take place at 2.30pm on Friday 20th July. Fundraisers Our new Friends of the School committee have recently organised very successful Discos for KS1 and KS2 children, and will be will be organising a Fathers Day Wrap with gifts for Father’s, Grandfathers, etc. which can be purchased and wrapped in school. The Friends of the School are organising a Summer Fayre to be held on Saturday 23rd June from 2-4pm. Everyone is welcome. We are continuing to fundraise for replacements to the “trim trail” and Early Years outdoor area, and are almost ready to start phase one of the project. We are excited to see what our new trim trail items will look like in situ and hope to have this completed by September for the start of the new academic year. After School Clubs After School Clubs include Homework, Football, Netball, Taiko, Paralympic Sports, Jigsaw, Lego, Dance, Choir & Running.

This term Rugby was very much in the spotlight five sides represented the school at the National Schools Rugby VIIs competition at Rosslyn Park and five pupils gained representative honours. Rugby was very much in the spotlight in the Lent Term with five sides representing the school at the National Schools Rugby VIIs competition at Rosslyn Park, five pupils gained representative honours, and the school also hosted an Easter camp in association with Premiership side Northampton Saints. At Rosslyn Park National Schools VIIs the 1st VII and U14s VII both came within a score of qualifying for the second day, narrowly missing out to RGS Newcastle and RGS Colchester respectively. The 1st VII recorded impressive wins over Reed’s School, UCS and King’s Bruton, while the U14s took an almighty scalp as they beat rugby powerhouse Dulwich College. The poor weather disrupted the U13s competition while the U16s and Girls competed in tough draws, with the 16s facing Eton College and The Worth and the Girls coming up against last year’s runners-up, Sir Thomas Picton, and this year’s semifinalists Reigate Grammar. Following the Nationals the school went into the Easter break; however, it didn’t stop for a number of the Grammar Schools players. Henry Mair went into camp with Scottish Exiles, before joining up with the LAMBS U16s at the end of their tour, while George Dady toured with the LAMBS U16s as they played a threegame series vs Scotland in North Wales. The pick of the games was when Henry’s Scotland side faced

George’s LAMBS side, with Henry taking bragging rights in a 14-10 win (two tries each). Further afield Oliver Mann, Jack Trundley and Bradley Hutler all toured with the LAMBS U18s to Croatia and Italy. All three of them started the two international games, vs Croatia U19s and Italy U19s B, where they won 99-0 and lost 21-50 respectively. With two more games in the middle the LAMBS won two and lost two, Jack and Oliver both scored two tries each on tour, while Bradley bagged ‘Man of the Match’ in game 2, vs Regionale Veneto, as well as the ‘Player of the Tour award’. Oliver and Bradley were both selected for the final LAMBS game vs Gloucester rugby on Sunday 22 March. Head of Rugby at WGS Alex Laybourne commented: “It has been an extremely busy and successful season for Wisbech Grammar School rugby, both with the XVs and VIIs sides, as well as for a variety of individuals who have gone on and made representative honours. I am also delighted with how our relationship with Northampton Saints is starting to flourish, with a number of boys in their DPP set-up and a hugely successful Easter camp held at the school. For the individual pupil, the range of experiences that they have, as well as the wider support they receive, such as Strength and Conditioning and medical support, allows them to develop within our programme. It is great to see them gain recognition outside of this, be it with representative honours with Scotland and the LAMBS, or via the county set-up or Northampton Saints Academy DPP programme.”

he ramblings of our resident rover take us to Moulton this month… The skyline of this wellkept village is so stunning it’s a pleasure to rest my paws and simply sit and take it in. The spire of the 12th Century church stands proud next to the four sails of Moulton’s beautiful windmill. With the grass of the village green beneath me and these two landmarks towering into the sky above me, I feel very fortunate to live in such a picturesque area. But I can’t sit down admiring the view all day. It’s time this hound had a look around! My nose starts twitching and this can mean only one thing – food is nearby. Do I fancy fish and chips, a pub lunch, coffee and cake at the mill or a nice carrot from the fruit and veg stall down the road? Being a Labrador, my answer is ‘yes –all of these!’ My human thinks she could feed our family without venturing out of the village thanks to this stall, the shop, the butcher and, of course, the pet store. She should probably nip over the road and get herself a trim in the salon but I’d best not mention it to her. It might lead to a trip to the dog groomer for me. I could mosey around Moulton all day, working

outwards from the village green. Under trees which must be hundreds of years old (imagine all my doggy ancestors that have had a sniff around them!). Past one and two-storey people kennels I go, then out to brand new builds and on to the fields beyond. Plus, I get plenty of pats from friendly locals which makes this dog’s day. Moulton is a village with its own hall and community centre, and there seems to be plenty going on to fill them both. Although if there’s any dog obedience training I think I’ll steer clear. I’m nine now. Can you teach an old dog new tricks?!

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

Business Focus

Eye 4 Design Upholstery & Interiors, is a family run business with over 35 years of experience.

E

ye 4 Design Owner, Mark Moore, has over 30 years experience in the world of interiors. He is very proud of the training and experience he has gained initially completing a 5-year apprenticeship with a small family business in London A W Page Upholsterers, where he worked on numerous projects from hand sprung sofas to manufacturing seating for pubs and restaurants. He continued to work within the business for several years, and then in 1995 decided to spread his wings and move on to a new company in Brixton (Kimpton & Walker). This was a company that worked from a huge hanger and employed everyone from carpenters, painters to artists. Kimpton and Walker made all the stage shows for Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber on settings including Starlight Express, Cats and many more. Mark’s role was making the upholstery and curtains where he designed all types of seating and curtains for their shows. In 1988 Mark decided to take the plunge and set up his own business, Ace Upholstery, working from an industrial unit in Romford, Essex. After a few years he then moved into a small retail shop and sold the complete package from upholstery to made to measure curtains and all the accessories alongside. 20 years ago Mark relocated from London to Spalding, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience in re-upholstery and curtain making. This is the moment when Eye 4 Design was born, working from a small unit in Surfleet at the back of his house and remained working from here for a number of years growing the client base. Mark commented; “6 years ago my wife Eileen joined me and after completing her apprenticeship, we now run the business together. Eileen has over 25 years’ managerial experience in retail, working for a number of the big chain stores, so brings with her wealth of experience in retail and customer focus. “Eileen has also completed a 2-year interior design course at the National Design Academy, gaining her Diploma with flying colours. Our worked has steadily increased over the years allowing us to grow our client base in the

Residential and Commercial sector. We have recently completed works for the Harbour Hotel in Richmond London and the new Myddleton Lodge Hotel at Tottenham Hotspurs new training ground.” It’s been an exciting month for Eye 4 Design as they recently moved into their new workshop and showroom in Cresswell Close, Pinchbeck, where they are now proudly showcasing their work, and offering their full range of services to clients. Visit us at the new showroom where you can see all the latest fabrics and wallpapers from Romo, Linwood, Clarke & Clarke and many more. Browse their beautiful range of scatter cushions from £15.00 each and handmade footstools from £45.00 each. Vintage

2018 has been a ‘vintage’ year for me…..we hosted an afternoon tea for my daughters Christening and went to a Peaky Blinders themed birthday party, and the word vintage was banded around for both. There are many mornings I feel a little vintage these days! What is vintage anyway? Is vintage just a fancy new word for antique? While both terms, “antique” and “vintage,” do muster connotations of “old,” understanding the specific meanings that people knowledgeable about the trade attach to these words will go a long way toward clearer communication

Antique Today, everything seems to be an antique. The 1980s brick cell phone and a craftsman-style table, handcrafted during the depression are each slapped with the same “antique” label that a 1800’s era family heirloom quilt justly deserves. For those in the trade, however, this word does not just mean “old,” but signifies a minimum specific age and should not be applied to the ‘80s brick cell phone and, perhaps, not even to the depression-era handcrafted table. The Antiques Roadshow must regularly decide what is and what is not an antique. According to them, an “antique” is, generally speaking, an object of considerable age valued

for its aesthetic or historical significance. In the antiques trade, the term refers to objects more than 100 years old Vintage Even if they may not be aware of what the standard is, many people realise that there is some standard for defining an antique. Many people speculate that if an item is not antique it must be at least be “vintage.” Sometimes this is the case, but not always. Often, it is all in the wording. Vintage has several different accepted meanings, and that can cause confusion. The loosest meaning implies that the item is of a fashion that was popular in a different era. Used in this sense, “vintage” may not even mean that it was produced in that era, but simply that it mimics the fashions of that era. This can cause trouble, because most people expect the term to mean something more when applied to something that is being bought or sold. The term “vintage” was originally derived from the dating of a bottle of wine, where the vintage date, or the date the grapes were grown, gives some added information about the value of the wine. If the vintage year was a good one for grapes, it indicates that this wine is of high quality.

n u S Hot tubs

BBQs

Outdoor dining is one of the highlights of summer, enjoying a relaxed meal outside with your nearest and dearest.

Hot tubs, spas and Jacuzzis are fast becoming the musthave garden luxury. The ultimate indulgence for outdoor play, they can cost from around £3,000 upwards. But in making such an expensive investment you really should visit a showroom before taking the plunge and get some expert advice. Make sure whatever brand / model you choose can stand up to UK weather too – ie it should be able to withstand plenty of rain. And whatever hot tub you go for, make sure it’s well insulated with a tightly fitting cover as this will help save energy costs and keep it free of garden debris too.

BBQs come in all sorts and sizes - before you buy, have some idea on the type of things you want to cook on it regularly and for how many diners. A small circular grill is ideal for traditional barbecue food like burgers and sausages, but if you want to cook bigger joints or fish you’ll need something larger. Do you want the whole BBQ experience of lighting the charcoal, fanning the flames and waiting for them to reach the right temperature before you get cooking, or would you rather use gas, which is far less time consuming? With everything from disposable to industrial / catering size BBQs available, not to mention chimineas and fire pits, make sure you set a budget before you shop.

With summer just around the corner, what better time to turn your attention to your garden? As the temperatures start to climb, chances are you’ll be wanting to spend more time outside. As well as a play area for children, your garden can be a great space for adults to enjoy too - in essence it’s another room. So why not treat yourself to a few little luxuries and to turn it into a haven where you can unwind, entertain and play!

designs and styles available to suit every budget. Hammocks, swing chairs, sofas and day beds are all great contemporary choices for lying back and relaxing in the great outdoors.

Ponds / water features

Why not bring nature back into your garden by adding a pond or water feature and create your very own aquatic oasis. As well as being a soothing addition, it’s another way of adding a touch of elegance and style. Match the size of your pond / feature to the space you have available, to make sure it does not overpower your garden. Visit your local garden centre for ideas and expert advice. But remember, if you have children especially babies and toddlers - it will be necessary to add a cover or fence it off to make is secure.

Lighting Garden lights are a great way of increasing your home security as well as adding atmosphere to your

outdoor spaces. Why not create impact by highlighting trees, shrubs or statues with different lighting effects using floodlights, garden lanterns or security lights. If your budget is a bit smaller, why not add some twinkling fairy lights to a trellis, or trees for a lowcost alternative or place solar lights along footpaths to highlight them.

Decorations

No, we’re not talking garden gnomes, although these could be a great addition too! Give your garden some glamour with some beautiful decorations like statues, planters, sundials, ornamental bird tables or even wind chimes. Add some creativity and focal points to your outdoor space with garden art or an unusual sculpture. Whatever additions you decide , make your garden a place of fun this summer.

Summer Driving Tips

Motoring

Whether it’s the daily commute, the school run or a long journey to a holiday retreat, driving in the summer has its challenges... and is very different to driving in the depths of winter. As well as glare, which can also be treacherous in winter, you’ve got high temperatures to contend with, which can make your car behave differently. Roads are also often busier, especially during school holidays, on airport and port approaches, and in and around popular tourist destinations. So before you head off again, take a look at these summer driving tips from RAC Breakdown Cover to keep you safe and moving.

Summer Car Maintenance Modern cars largely cope fine with summer weather and driving conditions. However, a few things can crop up – some are nothing to worry about, while others you should be mindful of. Don’t worry about: • Pools of water under your car – These are caused by condensed water from the air conditioning system • Smoke from air vents – Unless the smoke is acrid, it’s just water vapour produced by the air conditioning unit that hasn’t had time to condense. • Roaring from the engine bay – This is the

cooling fan turning on and off • Less power – If your car seems more lethargic in summer, this is probably because the air is warmer and less dense, giving the engine a little less “oomph”. On the flipside, you should be aware of the following: • Tyres – high temperatures and under-inflation exacerbate existing damage and weak spots, increasing the risk of punctures. Before setting off, check tyre condition and pressures on your vehicle, as well as anything you might be towing.

• Overheating – check your coolant reservoir, look for wet or white marks on coolant hoses and listen for the fan when your engine is idle. If you think anything’s amiss, have it looked at ASAP. • Fuel efficiency – use a roof box and close windows on the motorway to reduce drag; start air conditioning when doors and windows are closed, and turn it off when the car has cooled; and increase tyre pressure if you’re carrying extra passengers. • Glare – keep glass clean, repair scratches and chips, and wear non light-reactive sunglasses.

Hay Fever The onset of hay fever can prove dangerous for drivers – if you sneeze at 70mph you lose your vision for as much as 100 metres! Research from Halfords suggests 27% of UK drivers suffer from symptoms, and one in three admit to being distracted by hay fever. There are numerous remedies available to help (always choose a non-drowsy

form when driving), and wearing sunglasses, keeping a tissue to hand and closing air vents and windows can make your journey more comfortable. But if you’re severely affected by hay fever, it might be best to delay your journey – you don’t want to be one of the 2 million drivers thought to have had an accident, near miss or lost control of their vehicle as a direct result of hay fever. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 35

Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 PROS ‘N’ CONS à Appearance à Clout à Practicality à Wallowy

4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(1.9 4X4 Artic Trucks AT35 Double Cab Auto - as tested)

W

hen it comes to getting the job done, there aren’t many pick-ups more hardcore than the Isuzu D-Max – a muscular all-rounder that just works. Master of all trades and the perfect blend of rugged capability, whether off-road or load-lugging; paired with performance and comfort. The D-Max is masculine enough on its own. But marry it with Icelandic vehicle modifier, Arctic Trucks, and it gets an extra dose of testosterone. The customised, off-road inclined D-Max AT35 has been offered in Nordic territories for some time, but over the last couple of years, UK consumers have been able to have a slice of the action. The Arctic Trucks conversion can be had in two variants: the four-door Double Cab I drove, and the extended cab. Both are built on the existing D-Max Utah specification, but add a few grand to the price-tag. The biggest difference between the AT35 and a normal D-Max are the outsized 35inch tyres and the broader track. The truck has also been elevated by an extra 55mm. The tyres are so substantial that Arctic Trucks reckons the D-Max can glide over slush and snow, rather than plunge into it. Other outer surface conversions include burlier side steps, and wider wheel-arches. The standard Isuzu suspension has been given a seeing to as well, with superior Fox Performance dampers made to endure the toughest impacts. The additional ground

clearance means you won’t ground it out on any off-tarmac obstructions you’re likely to find in Britain. What’s more, the approach and departure angles enable it to confront almost perpendicular inclines without throwing a wobbly. The D-Max still goes about its business without upmarket hill descent control, but the low-range four-wheel drive and manual gear selector on the automatic transmission lets you do things the oldschool way, via engine braking. The 164PS 2.0-litre oil-burner might not be as hard-hitting or sophisticated as Mitsubishi’s L200 pickup on the asphalt, but it has bags of torque from low down to tug you out of bother. Not surprisingly, the Isuzu D-Max AT35 isn’t meant to be a motor you can hoon around twisty back roads; both performance and handling are impacted by the embellishments. It won’t outmanoeuvre BMW’s X5 if that’s what you imagine, but then that’s a long way from the intended market. What does amaze is the AT35’s talent to achieve and sustain motorway speeds without much tyre roar. The ride is very

à Max speed: 112 mph à 0-62 mph: 15 secs (est) à Combined mpg: 36.2 à Engine layout: 1898cc four-cylinder turbo diesel à Max. power (PS): 164 à CO2: 220 g/km

easy-going, too, although it does become quite wallowy the quicker you go, due to the balloon-like tyres. Hypothetically, you could use this special version of the D-Max to do the daily commute, but that would almost be an insult to its mud-plugging abilities.
