Welcome to the July issue What a few months it has been in the UK, I am sitting here reflecting on the general election result and recent sad events that have happened in Manchester and London. Normally we do not comment on such events but feel it has been such a changeable period, how could I not? Hopefully we can now move forward and start to ‘get back to business’ and be Great Britain once again. Our sincerest thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of those that lost their lives in such horrific, unnecessary acts. In this issue we are looking at where to take your family over the summer holidays, taking up a new hobby of fishing as part of National Fishing Month and if you’re feeling a little stressed make sure you read our massage guide to help you choose the right treatment for you! If you like your bikes then make sure you check out page 28 as we have all the info on Boston Bike Night. Finally, this month Tim is reviewing the new Toyota Prius. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue!

NEWS Musical cadets star in Belgian VE Day celebrations Musically talented cadets from Lincolnshire and Derbyshire visited Belgium last week after their talents were spotted on You Tube. The combined Band of Lincolnshire and Derbyshire Army Cadet Force (ACF) took up the invitation to play at the 2017 VE Day International Tattoo in Roeselare, Belgium over the weekend of 5 – 7 May. The band played in front of hundreds of people in the main square and surrounding streets of the city alongside Da Capo Lisee from The Netherlands, The Medina Marching Band based on the Isle of White and the host band, KH The Gildemusic. The cadets had been invited after they were spotted on You Tube by the Tattoo organiser Dirk Brabant who founded the event in 1992. After their well-received performance, cadets and adults attended the Last Post

ceremony at Menin Gate, Ypres, where every evening buglers honour the memory of WW1 soldiers of the former British Empire and its allies, who died in the Ypres Salient. Before their journey home, early on Sunday morning, the Last Post was performed by band members at Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery- the site of the 3rd battle for Ypres, better known as Passchendaele. For Cadet Sergeant Charlotte Towers, from Lincolnshire, it was a particularly poignant time, as she is rapidly approaching her 18th birthday which signals the end of her cadet career. She said: “Being here in Belgium with the band has been very special to me as it’s my final parade as a cadet. I have really enjoyed playing music with bands from all over Europe. It really shows that music is a universal language.” Cadet Sergeant James Loveday, of Lincolnshire ACF Band: said: “The highlight of my trip was when we did the finale as we were able to perform with bands from Europe. “As we marched through the streets of the town we knew we were representing our country’s Army Cadets and this made me feel very proud.” Cadet Lance Corporal Kira Roberts, of Lincolnshire ACF Band said: “I have really enjoyed being part of the Tattoo. It provided the opportunity to share the stage with some wonderful players.”

NEWS

Sales rise helps Lincolnshire Co-op invest Strong performances by food stores and travel branches have helped Lincolnshire Co-op record a 4.2 per cent sales growth in its half year results. Total sales went up by £6.2m to £153m in the half year to March 4th 2017 compared to the same period last year. Sales rose in food stores by seven per cent, helped by a busy investment programme which has seen outlets revamped, new food ranges introduced with more focus on chilled products and meal solutions, plus new services like Costa Coffee machines, instore bakeries and hot food-to-go. World events and uncertainties about restrictions on holiday destinations meant travellers sought the expert, independent advice and financial peace of mind that Lincolnshire Co-op’s 13 travel branches provide. Sales went up by 14 per cent. More people chose to entrust their funeral arrangements to the Society’s funeral homes, which saw income increase in the half year. Pharmacies dispensed more than 2.7m prescriptions, an increase on last year. As well as numerous general consultations, the teams also provided vital health services to more than 11,500 people including NHS Medicine Reviews, NHS New Medicine Service appointments, flu vaccinations, health checks and stop smoking clinics. Despite this strong performance,

significant cuts to pharmacy income received for dispensing prescriptions have had an impact on Lincolnshire Co-op’s bottom line. The Society continues to invest in its services for the benefit of members and customers. Over £10m has been spent on capital projects this half year including opening a new food store in Goxhill, in North Lincolnshire, and creating a community hub in Holbeach featuring a library, pharmacy, post office and a revamped food store. Every time a member shops in a Lincolnshire Co-op outlet, a donation is made to a good cause through the Community Champions scheme. Staff fundraising and the carrier bag levy also goes into the pot.

During the half year, £103,000 was split between hundreds of smaller local charities and community groups. The Society also donated £290,000 worth of support to 14 charities tackling homelessness. 13,750 new members joined Lincolnshire Co-op bringing the total number of dividend card holders to 273,000. Chief Executive of Lincolnshire Co-op Ursula Lidbetter said: “We’re pleased with our performance this half year, with sales growth across the business enabling us to carry on investing in our services and the community. “We do this through new outlets, like our community hub in Holbeach, or in wider schemes like the Cornhill Quarter in Lincoln, which will help revitalise that area of the city.

NEWS Bank of England’s chief economist meets Boston charity leaders The Bank of England’s chief economist Andy Haldane met with charity leaders in Boston to discuss current pressures. The round table was organised by Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS), hosted at Boston Mayflower Housing Association and included representatives also of Boston Food Bank, Centrepoint homeless charity, Citizen’s Advice, the Credit Union and Boston Big Local. All had a story to tell. Andy Haldane is also Executive Director for Monetary Analysis, Research and Statistics and a member of our Monetary Policy Committee. He and a small team from the Bank’s East Midland regional office were in the area to get a feel for the state of the economy at a local level and how interest rate decisions affect society as well as business. The bank’s request to meet with the voluntary and community sector followed a similar round table discussion elsewhere last year. The discussion on Friday, May 26, provided valuable insights on the impact on the least financially resilient people in our communities. LCVS chief executive David Fannin said: “As a result of this discussion, the bank confirmed it has decided to widen its reach and make this a regular feature of its intelligence gathering activity. “Andy Haldane was interested in just how much squeeze is happening due to austerity when judging how well the economy is doing and setting interest rates. “Following an open and honest discussion, he left with an impending sense of ‘safety net’ support organisations being stretched more than ever before and increasing numbers of people facing personal crisis. The recovery is fragile in places like Boston and support for the sector at this time is more important than ever with funding cuts and austerity having a big effect and shifting demand as we to try to support the most vulnerable. “Part of our core purpose at LCVS is to create a stronger third sector voice and develop local networks that help that voice to be heard. This was a great opportunity to get people from local organisations which support our most financially vulnerable people together and enable them to be heard at the highest level. The challenge is massive. I am grateful to busy colleagues for giving up their time. It was a very illuminating experience for all involved. Sharing information and experience like this helps us all stay focussed on the hard road ahead and the commitment to support each other was impressive.” The Bank wants to follow developments and see how the picture has progressed in early 2018.

e hear lots about the national economy but what about Lincolnshire and how is it performing? The recent state of the economy report produced for the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership makes for interesting reading.

The Lincolnshire economy has actually outperformed the U.K. Economy over the last five years. Since 2010 Lincolnshire’s Gross Value Added (total value of outputs less cost of inputs) per hour worked has increased by 17% compared to 9% nationally. South Holland has also experienced levels of growth above that seen nationally. Employment growth however is below the national average and low employment levels in our area are starting to feel the strain as the older ‘baby boomer’ generation start to retire with less people available to replace them. People who were in part time jobs are now increasingly in full time jobs. With national elections now over and the focus back on Brexit it is worth noting the effects of retirement, migration and expansion of the workforce over the next seven years. Latest research shows that by 2024 Lincolnshire will need to fill 236,000 jobs, 186,000 of which will be due to retirements. The replacement supply of labour is predicted to be around 111,000, meaning we will have a massive shortfall in workforce of 125,000 people. As with all figures there has to be a degree of caution, as for example one person could have multiple jobs, however it is already becoming an issue for the larger employers in our area.

Finding a solution is quite challenging, but more housing that attracts working age people to the County through cheaper housing, low crime rates and good schools is part of it. However our record on actual houses built continues to fall, with just 2,350 built in Greater Lincolnshire in 2015/16. Clearly robotics and automation will play a large part in determining the future workforce requirements as well, which is why in South Holland we are progressing work in this area through the University of Lincoln, Holbeach campus and the the upcoming Food Enterprise Zone. So what is the reaction from businesses? The final quarterly survey of businesses in 2016 saw a marked improvement in conditions for exporters with both manufacturing and services enjoying the upturn. Domestic sales and orders continued to steadily improve though manufacturing businesses have been finding the going harder at home than abroad. Businesses are concerned about the effects of inflationary pressures as we move through 2017 with over 30% of businesses expecting to increase their prices of their goods or services. The main cause of this is the cost of overheads and raw materials. This is likely to affect profit levels and therefore have an effect on the overall economy of the area. With a new government now in place and Brexit negotiations underway I am looking forward with considerable interest to the next state of the economy report to see what trends are starting to emerge.

Advice For help with your application or more information on managin g your money, contact

What is Universal Credit Universal Credit (UC) is a means-tested benefit, which means the amount you get depends on how much income and capital you’ve got. Capital means things like savings and some kinds of property. Jobcentre Plus will administer UC. UC will eventually replace many existing benefits, which will be abolished. Who can get Universal Credit? Universal Credit (UC) is a benefit for people of working age. This means you must be under the age when you can make a claim for Pension Credit. You don’t have to be out of work to get UC. You may be able to get it if you’re working, looking for work, sick or disabled, or caring for children or a disabled person. If you’re already in work, you won’t lose all your UC if your earnings or hours of work increase. Instead, your UC will go down as your earnings go up. You’ll have to meet various conditions to get UC. These include accepting a claimant commitment. This is a document that says what you’ll have to do to prepare for work, find work, get better paid work, or work

more hours. For example, you may have to go to interviews to help you find work or apply for jobs. Which benefits will Universal Credit replace Universal Credit (UC) will eventually replace the following benefits and tax credits: • Income Support • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance • Child Tax Credit • Working Tax Credit • Housing Benefit • Budgeting loans. An advance payment of UC will replace these. However, you can get Housing Benefit and UC at the same time if you live in one of the following types of accommodation: • certain kinds of accommodation to help you lead a more settled way of life • certain kinds of accommodation where you get care, support or supervision • certain kinds of temporary accommodation for people who’ve left home because of domestic violence • a local authority hostel in some cases. UC can’t help with your housing costs if you’re in one of these types of accommodation, but Housing Benefit can, so you may have to claim Housing Benefit as well as UC. I am about to apply for Universal Credit for the first time, but have been told that there is a six week wait before the first payment. I’m worried that I won’t be able to pay my bills. Is this right, and is there anything I can do? After applying for Universal Credit,

Citizens Advice

there’s usually a five or six weeks wait before your first payment, which is explained during the application process. Although you can’t be paid faster, there are things you can do to help tide you over. As part of the claim process, you’ll usually attend an interview at the Jobcentre Plus. At the interview ask if you can apply for an “advance payment” - this is a loan that will be deducted from your future benefits. You’ll need to show how much money you need for essential bills like food and housing, and explain why the loan will protect you from serious financial difficulty - like being unable to pay your rent. Alternatively, you can apply for an advance payment through the Universal Credit helpline on 0345 600 0723. It’s best to apply as early as possible in your claim, as you may be turned down otherwise. If you are refused an advance payment, you can ask the Jobcentre Plus for reconsideration. Emergency assistance may be available if you are still turned down - Jobcentre Plus or Citizens Advice can inform of you of your next steps.

School news

Kirkstone House Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

The old students’ association of Kirkstone House is delighted to host a tea party to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary. The event will take place in the marquee on the playing fields and we look forward to seeing

as many former pupils and staff as possible. If you plan to attend or would like more information please email Mr R Jones on admissions@kirkstonehouseschool.co.uk or telephone 01778 560350

Spalding Parish C of E Day School The school recently hosted its first Pop Lacrosse (Primary School Lacrosse) match against Pinchbeck East Primary School. It is a non-contact version of lacrosse which uses plastic-headed sticks and oversized Lacrosse balls. It is a five-a-side mixed game and is fast paced and fun to play. Amelia Siddall from Spalding Parish C of E Day school (a former Lacrosse goalkeeper for the England Development squad) and Sally Robinson from Pinchbeck East Primary school encouraged the children and put both teams through their paces. It was the first match of its kind across the town. Both teams represented their schools admirably, working hard to defend, attack and refine their skills within a competitive match. The final result was 19 – 10 with Pinchbeck East taking the win. Spectators from both sides enjoyed the fixture, warm weather and the excellent refereeing skills from Amelia Siddall. Spalding Parish C of E Day qualified earlier in May for the Lacrosse County finals which are to be held in Lincoln on Thursday 25th May. The children in the team are looking forward to this very exciting competition.

Photography Student Set to Begin Studies at Falmouth University with Sir David Attenborough as one of his Lecturers Photography student, Ieuan Williams, a former Arthur Mellows College pupil, is set to begin his university studies at Falmouth University to study Marine and Natural History Photography in September. Ieuan will have the privilege of having Sir David Attenborough as one of his lecturers, and Attenborough’s photographer/cameraman Doug Allan, both renowned for their outstanding BBC Planet Earth series. In addition, a number of ex ITV or BBC photographers and cameramen lecture the course, highlighting the level of industry expertise Ieuan will be able to gain during his university studies. “Having worked up an extensive portfolio through college projects and gaining additional experience on the side of my studies, such as a Photographer for Peterborough Council’s advertising, I have been able to build up and showcase my talents, to get me where I am today.” “Before starting my photography course at New College Stamford, I did not even have the intention to go to university, but thanks to the knowledge and level of skill I acquired during my course, I have well and truly developed my confidence and affinity for the industry, so now I am fully prepared to take my next steps into university life.” Ieuan aspires to work at the BBC as a Videographer and Photographer, and will have the chance to chase his dream and flourish his creative skills even further. “Lecturer of Photography, Mike Pickering has been brilliant in teaching the ins and outs of photography. Without the support from Mike, I would not have had the opportunity to progress onto a university course.” If you would like the chance to develop your creative skills and work your way up into the photography industry, check out our courses at www. stamford.ac.uk, email enquiries@stamford.ac.uk or call 01780 484311 for more information. 12 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Purchasing a new home?

W

What are ‘restrictive covenants?’

hen clients purchase their new home they often assume that their new property is their own and they are free to modify and change their property as much as they like, subject to the usual Local Authority planning and building regulation obligations etc. Clients are often confused when certain restrictions called ‘restrictive covenants’ are pointed out to them during the house buying process, restricting what they can and cannot do with their own property. A restrictive covenant is a restriction or obligation placed on owners of property by the seller. These are legally binding obligations and can be enforced if proven to be breached. When a house is built, there are normally restrictions placed on the owner, for example,

not to run a business from the property, to only keep domestic animals, not to build above a certain height or not to erect aerials above the roof line. This list is endless and the older the title to the property, the more absurd some of the restrictive covenants become. Restrictive covenants can actually cover a broad range of issues but one of the most frequently broken is in making alterations to an existing property without obtaining consent from the appropriate third party, which is often the original builder. During a sale, or a purchase, if it becomes clear that a restrictive covenant has been breached, it is possible to remedy this by obtaining an indemnity policy to indemnify the new owner against the breach, assuming that there is no ongoing dispute regarding the

breach. An Indemnity Policy is a standard policy available for a one off premium. The premium is based upon the purchase/sale price of the property and therefore varies. For more information or advice contact the Ringrose Law conveyancing team today. If you would like Ringrose Law to act on your behalf in your sale or purchase, please contact Clare Tatham or a member of her team on 01775 662662 or visit us at 18 Hall Place, Spalding.

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Advice Worth Hearing!!

Y

ou probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life. If I think I have a problem, how can you help? We are a privately run local family business with full time hearing centres located in Peterborough, King’s Lynn & Horncastle. We also hold day clinics at Whittlesey and Kirton Medical Centre. We are proud to have some of the

“These days, digital hearing aids can be very discreet & almost undetectable - but they’re still powerful enough to help with even the severest of hearing losses.”

most sophisticated testing equipment available and offer FREE hearing tests, and if preferred, full diagnostic hearing assessments in a sound proof environment, or in the comfort of your own home. We provide independent and impartial advice and can provide a FREE hearing aid trial (with no obligation). We are able to create a personalised solution for all your hearing requirements based on lifestyle, cosmetics & importantly - budget. Our business model is based around good old fashioned values with free after- care which is second to none. What other Services do you offer? We also provide a comprehensive wax removal service through irrigation, micro suction & instrumentation. Wax removal is becoming more & more difficult to have administered through some GP surgeries and can sometimes involve frustrating & lengthy delays. We also offer advice on Tinnitus Management & provide custom solutions for noise and hearing protection. Are hearing aids big and clumsy? These days, digital hearing aids can be very discreet & almost undetectable - but they’re still powerful enough to help with even the severest of hearing losses. Most people are amazed at the size & performance of modern hearing aids. They help you hear every day sounds and make it much easier to follow conversations. Your confidence in talking to people should improve & everyday & social occasions will become less of a struggle. Some hearing aids also help reduce certain unwanted background noises & if you have tinnitus, you may find it disturbs you less when you wear a hearing aid. Some hearing aids can connect to telephones, mobile telephones, televisions, computers, IPads etc. For those that find hearing aids fiddly, there are now rechargeable solutions so batteries do not have to be changed.

It’s never too early to look after your hearing. Help yourself & those around you and book a free assessment with us now. It really can make a world of difference! What makes you different from the competition? We are a local family run business with many years of experience. We have access to all makes and models and can provide impartial advice accordingly. It’s our combination of an extensive range of products, experience, continuity, in depth testing, dedicated time and attention to detail that is a winner. If you spend time with someone to get their prescription and fitting correct, the quality of the final result will always be superior. We are a Hearing Care Company that is 100% dedicated and focused on hearing alone.

How can I tell if I have a hearing problem? Typical indicators include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to hear in noisy environments, confusing words or misunderstanding what’s being said in conversation or having to turn the T.V up. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book your FREE hearing assessment with ourselves by calling one of the numbers above, and we can then assess whether you have any degree of hearing loss.

What should I do next? The most important thing to do is not ignore it! In most cases hearing deteriorates gradually & it often affects people around you more than yourself. Wearing a hearing aid can make a real difference to your quality www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 23

National Fishing Month What is it all about?

Fishing Licences

National Fishing Month offers unique opportunities for the protection and promotion of angling. It has the aim of: • Increasing the number of people getting involved in the sport. • Informing the general public about the economic, social and environmental benefits of angling. • Influencing decisions about access, environmental policy and wildlife management so that they take the importance of angling into account. • Improving diversity amongst anglers to counter any perception that it is exclusively a male, white, able-bodied only pursuit. National Fishing Month is a celebration of the sport of angling. All over the country qualified coaches give their time to welcome newcomers to this marvellous sport. Fees are waived and tackle is often made available free of charge too. Events are organised around the UK to show people who have never fished before how to do it.

You need a rod fishing licence to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel with a rod and line in: • England (except the River Tweed) • Wales • the Border Esk region of Scotland You must always carry your rod fishing licence when you’re fishing or you could be prosecuted.

You can be fined up to £2,500 for fishing without a rod fishing license. Children under 12 don’t need a licence. Licences for children aged between 12 and 16 are free.

What is actually going to happen? From 21st July to 3rd September, there will be hundreds of locally organised angling events offering non-anglers the opportunity to be taught how to fish, FREE OF CHARGE, by a qualified licensed Coach and within a controlled environment.

Family Life You may also need: • permission from the landowner if you’re fishing on private land • an additional licence to fish in locks or weirs on the River Thames You must follow national and local rules (byelaws) when freshwater fishing with a rod and line in England and Wales. Types of licence Trout, coarse fish and eel licence This lets you fish non-migratory trout and all freshwater fish. You must use your licence in one of the following ways. You can choose to fish with: • 1 rod for non-migratory trout in rivers, streams, drains and canals • up to 2 rods for non-migratory trout in reservoirs, lakes and ponds • up to 2 rods for freshwater fish You can also buy a 12-month licence that lets you use 3 rods for freshwater fish. The place where you fish may have additional rules about how many rods you can use there. Salmon and sea trout licence This lets you fish salmon, sea trout, nonmigratory trout and all freshwater fish. You must use your licence in one of 3 ways. You can choose to fish with: • 1 rod for salmon, sea trout and non-migratory trout in rivers, streams and canals • up to 2 rods for salmon, sea trout and non-migratory trout in reservoirs, lakes and ponds • up to 3 rods for freshwater fish The place where you fish may have additional rules about how many rods you can use there. Rods that aren’t affected by licence limits The following rods aren’t affected by licence limits unless they have hooks attached: • spod rods (used to propel bait into water) • marker rods (used to mark out lines) You can buy a 1-day, 8-day or 12-month licence online by visiting www.get-fishinglicence.service.gov.uk/buy/name www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 25

Massages - What’s the Difference? Some massages are more soothing than others, leaving you feeling like you’ve been wrapped in a cloud and the “reset” button pressed on your body. Swedish Massage This is the most common type of massage therapy, and what many people are thinking about when they hear the word “massage” or try to give someone else or themselves a good massage. Swedish massage uses a combination of these basic movements: • Long, sweeping strokes (effleurage), usually used at the start and end of a massage • Muscle kneading and rolling (petrissage), where the muscles are worked on just like kneading dough • Friction, where deep pressure is applied to a particular spot with the thumb, fingertips, or knuckles • Rhythmic tapping (tapotement), fast percussion movements like chopping and even pounding. (About.com notes, however, that percussion techniques have fallen out of favor for Swedish massages because they’re not relaxing—the way that karate chops to your naked, oiled body could be distracting) Best for: An intro to massage, stress relief, relaxation, releasing cramped or tense muscles, couples massage

your run-of-the-mill massage, thanks to the almost-too-much heat bringing you back to focus on the moment instead of letting you drift off. The heat helps release the tension in your back and shoulders, mostly, so those muscles can be worked on more effectively. Best for: “Centering” yourself, releasing very tense muscles, relaxation

flow of energy in your body. Although there’s no concrete evidence of Shiatsu’s use as a healing method, people who have had this massage still report stress and pain relief. Unlike other types of massage, you stay clothed during the treatment. Best for: Ailments such as headaches, back pain, and lack of energy

Deep Tissue Massage

Thai Massage

As the name suggests, deep tissue massage applies deep pressure onto specific trouble points. It feels very much like someone is torturing you on purpose by pushing into your knotted muscle, and the massage can leave you feeling sore. It’s not just more pressure all over your body, however (which would be true torture), it’s very specific, methodical treatment. This is not the kind of massage to ask for if you expect to feel relaxed during the therapy, and afterwards you might feel sore for a couple of days. Best for: Treating stiff, painful trouble spots like the shoulder and neck

Thai massage works your entire body. It’s one of the most invigorating types of massages, as the therapist rigorously manipulates your body, moving it into yogalike stretches. (It’s sometimes referred to as “Yoga for the lazy”.) The therapist uses every part of his or her body—hands, knees, legs, and feet—to not only stretch you but also apply pressure on your muscles and loosen your joints. You might even get walked on! This type of massage is both energizing and, at times, relaxing. Best for: Improving energy, increased flexibility, overall health and well-being

Sports Massage Shiatsu Massage

Hot Stone Massage During hot stone massage, your body is not only weighted down with hot, smooth stones, but the masseuse also uses the stones to massage your body. It’s like being caressed by the smoothest (rollerball-like) hands, but also being scorched by them for a “Ouch!…. Ahhhhh” effect. A hot stone massage is mostly relaxing, but it also is more invigorating than

Shiatsu (literally, “finger pressure”) is an ancient technique from Japan. It combines gentle stretches with finger pressure to work on different pressure points. The idea is to fix imbalances in the

Finally, sports massage is designed specifically for the very physically active (whether you’re a professional athlete or not). It combines Swedish, Shiatsu, and other techniques to concentrate on the areas that are related to your sport. Athletes often get sports massages to prepare for peak performance, prevent injury, and also treat injury. Best for: Athletes The massage types above are some of the most popular massages you can get, but there are many others. Regardless of the type of massage you opt for, be sure to tell your therapist which areas you especially need work on, whether you have any health issues, and, during the massage, how the pressure feels. When you find a therapist you like, you might want to book a standing appointment with him or her for pain and stress relief all year long. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 27

Boston Focus

Boston Bike Night

T

housands of people are expected to visit Boston Bike Night on the evening of Thursday July 6th, it is undoubtedly the largest motorcycle event in South Lincolnshire, and has grown to encompass the whole of the town centre, offering something for bike enthusiasts, and general public alike. The event which will see riders of motorcycles, scooters, trikes & sidecars from all over the country descend upon Boston’s Town Centre from the Bargate End car parks, Pescod Square through to the far end of the Market Place, filling it with a spectacular array of machinery, including all types’ makes and models, from sports bikes, tourers, to classic varieties. Not only is the event a Mecca for riders and fans of motorcycles, it is also a great family night out. Last year it was estimated that more than 2500 Bikes, and over 3000 people were

visiting the Bike Night at any one time, to a total of probably of more than 8000. This is obviously a great boost for those businesses which are open within the town centre. The event started twenty one years ago, when a group of Boston motorcycle Riders Association members decided to organise a meet up of friends and associates from other motorcycle clubs in the centre of Boston. The organisers from that time to now have had a simple philosophy, that the evening should be free to all who attend, that the event should be about motorcycles and, it will never be about profit. The event is now organised by the Boston Bike Night Committee, a who are a group of Boston Motorcycle Riders, who even with the increase in numbers attending the event over the years and the increase in legislative requirements, still hold to the founding principles of the original event. This year will see the first motorcycle show within the event, this will be a show of classic motorcycles organised by two well known members of the Poachers section of the National AJS and Matchless

motorcycle club. The event will be open to all comers, there will be classes covering American, British and European machines up to 1985 and Japanese machines to 1990 with a class for customs and special of any age. Details of the show can be found on the Boston bike night website. So if you have something special or interesting tucked away in the corner of the garage, polish it up and bring it along, who knows you may even win a trophy. There is only one stipulation for this show and that is that you ride your pride and joy to the event.

“Not only is the event a Mecca for riders and fans of motorcycles, it is also a great family night out.”

The Boston Bike Night Committee puts on this event for fun, makes no profit from and has always felt that this event should be free of charge to all who attend. As with all events of this type, there is always a need for help and support, so if you are able to offer any help, perhaps help with the parking, please contact the organisers through the contacts to be found on the Boston bike night website or facebook. Details of the event can be found on the internet at www.bostonbikenight.co.uk and on facebook. 28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Garden Projects We all enjoy kicking back with a drink and the BBQ fired up but a relaxing, serene garden doesn’t come without a bit of work. Don’t break a sweat though, there are some small jobs that can make a big difference! Dig out your borders If you have borders to your garden then a bit of time and a garden fork will transform a tired looking garden. All you need to do it use a good weedkiller (be mindful of usage with animals and children) to get rid of any troublesome shoots and then turn over the soil to give a fresh look. Why not visit a local garden centre and pick up a few flowering plants and brighten up your new borders?

Clear Your Gutters It’s a messy job, but someone’s got to do it! So get your ladders out, a bin bag, some rubber gloves and empty those gutters. Over the winter gutters

really do take a battering getting full of leaves and other debris so now the weather is better it is a prime opportunity to get them clean. Whilst you’re up there why not give the UPvc a wipe down or any wooden eaves and fascia boards a new coat of paint?

Paint Fencing and Sheds On a nice day painting can be therapeutic, so grab a brush and getting painting! There are a large selection of garden fence paints available that can be applied by brush or sprayer. Paint fences from a range of colours that fit in with your garden design. Remember to discuss painting a neighbours fence prior to application to save any disagreements.

Add Some Glam to Your Garden Never has there been more interest in garden ‘decoration’, long gone are the days of a few bulbs in the borders but now our garden truly is an extension of our homes!

Portable Spa Don’t break the bank but enjoy the highlife on a budget

Jet wash Patios and Paths The largest outlay for equipment but a jet wash can be used for more than just cleaning the car! Starting from around £50 upwards and a day of hard graft you can bring grubby slabs back to their former glory. 1 - Clear your patio completely by removing all furniture, ornaments and pots. 2 - Using a broom, brush away any loose debris such as leaves and dirt. 3 - Connect your hose and ensure that water is running freely before you begin. Allow water to flow through the machine to remove any air locks. Top Tip: If you’re using a hose reel, this should be fully unwound and free of kinks to ensure a constant water flow. To connect your hose you will require two universal connectors and a tap adaptor for your garden tap. 4 - Connect your pressure washer to the mains electricity supply then turn it on to pressurize the system. 5 - Before you start cleaning your patio, you could apply detergent to the surface to help dissolve dirt and make the patio easier to clean. Some detergents also have special properties that will help reduce the build-up of dirt in the future. 6 - Some dirt and organisms like lichens can be hard to remove using a standard lance or patio cleaner. Most pressure washers come with a rotary pencil jet nozzle that can provide up to 80% more power. By switching to this lance you can ensure even the most stubborn dirt can be removed.

Add Lighting There are so many options for lighting, from adding spotlights to add interesting shadows to solar lighting strings to create a calming, romantic zone

Summer Houses & Buildings Even on a chillier evening you can get wrapped up out of the wind on a comfy sofa with candles glowing with a summer house or gazebo.

Safe Summer Motoring

A

s we are all thinking of heading to the airport or coast for our annual holidays it’s important to think about car maintenance and ensuring your car is up to the job! It’s a popular myth that winter is the one and only time of year to get your car serviced, ensuring that it can cope with those extreme weather conditions. However, the summer - which can bring both long, sunny days and torrential rain - actually sees motorists put even more strain on their vehicles. We spend more time on the road in the summer, making the most of those bank holiday weekends, visiting family and, of course, escaping on that summer holiday. It’s important that your car is in good condition, as the heat and rain can lead to burst tyres, overheating engines and air conditioning problems. It’s crucial, therefore, to remember car maintenance as part of your summer holiday checklist!

air conditioning works efficiently, that refrigerant gas levels are topped up, and that the whole system is clean and in good working order. An air con re-gas can be carried out by specialists for around £35. Seat belts: With repeated use, seat belts can endure wear and tear, whether on the fastening or the fabric belt itself. As these are a key safety feature, it’s worth getting them checked over at a garage to ensure they are working at 100%.

Motoring

Fluid levels: It’s a good idea to check coolant to prevent overheating, engine oil to ensure smooth operation and screen wash so that in the event of dusty, dry days, you’ll be able to see clearly. Tyres: Make sure you test tyre pressure, tread depth and condition, to ensure that

Air conditioning effectiveness: Arguably the most important feature in any vehicle during hot periods, identify whether your

Motoring Without Meltdowns Are you travelling with a baby or toddler this summer? Then make sure you plan ahead to keep it as stress free as possible! Time it right. If your baby sleeps well in the car, plan your departure time to coincide with his or her regular nap time or bedtime so they’ll sleep through part of the journey. If your baby sleeps better in his or her own bed, consider leaving first thing in the morning or right after he wakes from his nap. Try to stick to your baby’s regular schedule as much as possible, and he’ll be a happier traveller. Break up the journey. It’s unrealistic to think you can drive for seven hours straight with a baby or toddler strapped into her car seat. When he or she’s sleeping, stay on the road. When she’s awake, plan to stop every few hours so that everyone can get out and have a break. Don’t forget snacks. Bring along an assortment of favorite snacks and drinks and remember to bring food for yourself, too. Having snacks along gives you the flexibility to save your stops for when your little one is fussing.

hot road surfaces won’t exacerbate any existing damage, that you don’t have a slow puncture and that your tyres can cope with that inevitable rain that an English summer brings! Horn: Most of us don’t use the horn very often, so if it were to develop a fault, you may not be aware for some time. It can literally be a lifesaver! Lights: Working lights are a legal requirement - yes, even that rear indicator you keep meaning to get fixed. If you are towing a caravan or trailer then please hook this up and check they all work too! Exhaust system: For both security and condition, you need to inspect the exhaust to ensure that it is fixed securely, look for leaks and corrosion, and identify any other damage. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 35

Toyota Prius Plugin Hybrid

F I R ST DR I V E W R EV I E

PROS ‘N’ CONS

Location: Barcelona, Spain

L

et’s get one thing answered – the new 2017 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is not exciting, okay? But, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad car. This is one very ingenious machine, with some awesome features – the most outstanding being the solar panel roof that can place just enough ‘go’ into the Toyota’s drive battery for an extra few free miles every day. The Prius PHV - as it’s abbreviated to - also has a refreshed electric powertrain. A large 8.8kWh lithium ion battery is housed under the floor of the Toyota’s boot, together with a hi-tech electrical arrangement to move clout through it. This works well and provides, what is essentially a fourthgeneration Prius, some worthwhile shove, especially as the car also has a twin motor hybrid powertrain. This raises pure electric power from 72PS to 103PS. All this gives the Toyota five-door hatch a maximum speed of 84mph when driven in unadulterated electric mode. Mind you, you can only get away with this form of propulsion for so long – the electric range is 39 miles, but expect 20-25 miles real-world. The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid also has a 1.8 petrol engine, and along with the electric wizardry, 122PS is produced – giving a zero to 62mph time of 11.1sec and a maximum speed of 101mph. Hardly exciting, as I said earlier – but it’s not abysmal performance, either. More importantly, the Prius PHV breaths out a tiny 22g/km of CO2 and it’s possible to get 283mpg out of the car. No, 36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

that’s not a typo – that’s the claimed figure. Of course, reality doesn’t always match up to what we’re told, and on a long motorway stretch, I only managed to get 59mpg – but then I did have my foot down – and hardly used electric mode. Instead, I mucked around with the ‘Normal’ ‘Eco’ and ‘Power’ settings, seeing what difference they made to the car. It’s difficult to tell much difference between ‘Eco’ and ‘Normal’ – but the ‘Power’ mode does give you a bit of a push in the back – and a lot more noise – reminiscent of a slightly unhinged vacuum cleaner. Anyway, away from the tech and figures, the new Prius PHV is similar to the normal Prius – apart from a couple of things. Unlike the regular model, it’s only got two seats in the rear – so it’s a strict four-seater - and the boot is smaller. This is all due to the bigger, newer battery. Oh, and I nearly forgot - there is one other notable way of telling the PHV apart from the usual Prius: its rear lights are horizontal, not vertical. I think it looks better this way.

FAST FACTS Max speed: 101 mph 0-62 mph: 11.1 secs Combined mpg: 283 Engine layout: 1798cc 4-cylinder petrol electric ➠ Max. power (PS): 122 ➠ CO2: 22 g/km ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠

Price: £34,895 On the move, the car is hushed, due to extra sound-deadening materials, and, when I did venture off the motorway onto Spanish rural routes, the Prius handled corners with barely any lean at all. This is down to retuned suspension springs and dampers. However, the tauter set-up means the car does bang and crash over potholes. Yet, back on smooth surfaces, the Toyota feels refined and, when using electric-only mode, I found the car almost silent. Only the whoosh of wind and tyre rumble disturbs the otherwise librarylike calm in the cabin. Once I’d stopped hooning the PHV and started using the electric settings, I achieved a hybrid-mode fuel economy figure of 69mpg – which is better than many Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) will do. Alas, that’s only a tiny fraction – probably about 5mpg - better than you’d eke from a run-of-the-mill Prius. It’s also hard to recommend this car over the regular Prius – due to its strict four-seater configuration and its shallower boot.
