We Need a New Home

Greyhounds make wonderful companions and Kama’s Cave Greyhound Sanctuary are always looking for caring, loving homes in the area. If you would like to meet any of the dogs mentioned or come and meet our friends please contact Kama’s Cave on 01406 330459.

Luke was born in 2004. His racing name was Lukes Fancy. He is a big black boy, He is a real softie and a very loving character. We have had him indoors and he is house clean. He loves cuddles and fuss.

Sadie was born on the 8th November 2002 so she will be 8 years young this year. Her racing name was Strong Yield. Sadie is a real sweetheart, she is kind and loving. Sadie would need a home where there is someone about most of the time as she is very insecure and needs reassurance she is not nervous but insecure.

Sally was born on 2nd July 2002 and will also be 8 this year. Her racing name was Talk Tonight. Sally is a pretty girl with eyes that would melt your heart she gets overlooked here I think because she is black and a bit fat. She has a lovely nature with humans.

Well Done

Congratulations to the winners of the April competition who each won £20 worth of vouchers to spend at Spalding Farm Shop. Carol Clements, Mark Green, Vivienne Scupham, Roger Alderton and Mrs Freda Ball

Lots of Bottle

Spalding Youth Centre is embarking on a recycling project to build a greenhouse out of two-litre plastic bottles. The project, based at an allotment at Low Fulney, arose out of looking at healthy lifestyles and cooking. This led to the young people and staff deciding to grow their own food, being unsure what chemicals or fertilisers were used on produce bought in the shops. They’d now like the support of the community in collecting 1,500 bottles (not milk containers) for the greenhouse. If you can help, please call Steve or Tracy at Spalding Youth Centre on 01775 722538.

Well Done Congratulations to Miss SJ Seymour who won our May competition to win £100 worth of vouchers to spend at Waterside Garden Centre at Baston.

Community New Industrial Units at Crowland

The finishing touches are now being made to six new industrial units at Crease Drove, Crowland. The units, on Pinnacle Close have been built as a joint venture between South Holland District Council and the East Midlands Development Agency in response to a study carried out in the district. It showed an unsatisfied demand for both land and premises that are affordable and have the flexibility of tenure that will make them attractive to a wide variety of businesses. Three acres of allocated employment land at Crease Drove, Crowland were acquired in early 2008 and construction of six units, along with road and utility infrastructure, began in late 2009. Three of the six units are already taken subject to contract, but the three remaining units are available for sale, rent or lease, and are sized at 1212 square feet for unit 2, 1524 square feet for unit 4, and 1543 square feet for unit 5. Rentals start from £4.50 per square foot. A number of starter units are also about to become available at Horseshoe Yard, Crowland. These units are 660 square feet and rents start from £5.23 per square foot, with a half price rental deal for six months for new businesses. For more information about the units, please contact South Holland District Council, email or call 01775 761161.

Funny, but some insurers don’t think it’s possible to have £5,000 worth of stuff in your garage.

We do. When we insure your home contents it seems right to consider the contents of every part of your home. That’s why we cover up to £5,000 as standard for the things in your garage. And that’s not just power tools and push bikes, we’ll even insure the contents of your chest freezer if you have one. In our experience people have all kinds of things in their garage that could get stolen and discovering they are not covered isn’t funny.

Volcanic ash travel problems?

here is still some disruption to air travel caused by volcanic ash from Iceland and the fear of further volcanic eruptions. If you are planning to fly, it’s advisable to check with your airline for details of any flight disruptions before going to the airport. The following advice may be helpful:

Know your rights!

Flights from European Union (EU) airports or on EU airlines

If you are flying with an EU airline or from an EU airport and your flight is cancelled then there are rules which state that you must be offered a refund or the chance to be rerouted onto a later flight. If you’re abroad and your flight home is cancelled or substantially delayed you are entitled to meals and refreshments and any necessary hotel accommodation, while waiting for the airline to reroute you onto a later flight. However, since the current disruption is beyond the control of the airlines, there is no right under EU rules to any further compensation. You should check with your airline what they are prepared to provide. If you decide to accept a refund from your airline, you will not be entitled to any meals, refreshments or hotel accommodation.

Flights from non-EU airports

If you are flying with a non-EU airline to a non-EU destination you are not covered by EU rules and you should check the airline’s terms and conditions. You are likely to be offered a refund or the chance to rebook.

Complaints against the airline

If you think the airline did not do what it’s supposed to according to EU rules, you should make a complaint. You must complain to the airline first of all. If you get nowhere, you can complain to the Air Transport Users Council (ATUC), the official airline watchdog in the UK. The ATUC will need to see the airline’s response to your complaint and will then decide if you have a real grievance or not. If it thinks you do, ATUC will take it up with the airline. You will then be advised if your complaint has been successful or not. If not, ATUC will offer further advice. If you want to take your claim further you can, as a last resort, make a claim in your local county court for any losses you have suffered which the airline have refused to refund. For more information about complaining to the ATUC, go to:

If you paid by credit card

Finally, if you paid for your holiday by credit card, there is a potential claim against your credit card provider if you cannot recover your costs from your airline or travel insurer.

If you’re stranded overseas and have run out of money

If you are stranded overseas you should contact your airline for help. If you are short of funds, friends or relatives may be able to send money to

you via a commercial money transfer service. If you have a serious problem, contact your local embassy, High Commission or consulate for help or advice. If you are in the UK and are worried about someone stranded overseas you can call the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice line on 0207 008 0000.

Further information

For more information about your rights when your air travel has been disrupted, see the ATUC’s website at: For the latest travel information, go to the Directgov website at:

Employment rights

If you can’t get to work because of the travel disruption, you have no right to be paid for the days you don’t work, unless your employer has agreed to pay you. However, you should not be disciplined or dismissed if your absence was due to circumstances beyond your control. You may be able to negotiate with your employer to work away from the office to make up the hours or take the time off as annual leave to avoid losing pay, or take it as unpaid leave.

I have recently treated myself to a new gas barbeque and patio set for the summer season. I have looked through my policy to ensure they are covered but I cannot find anything. Can you advise please if they are covered.

I have seen on some TV programmes about LCD TVs in bathrooms, we are renovating our property at the moment, are these fairly easy to wire up safely as I would love to have one, it would be a real talking point!

Phil replies......

In general home insurance policies provide cover for contents of the home, apart from valuables, whilst they are within the garden but I recommend checking with your provider to be certain. As you have found insurance policies are not the easiest of reading but I am sure there will be some cover afforded by the policy. The big issue here is not whether cover applies but what are the limitations. Insurers place a limit within the policy for claims from the garden and this can vary enormously from anywhere between £250 and £2500 so you may find yourself significantly underinsured depending on who you are insured with. Don’t overlook other items such as garden tools, especially lawnmowers either, when you are adding up the value at risk in thre garden. Also remember that cover under the policy will be new for old, so you will need to value all of the items at new prices when checking to see if the limits within the policy are adequate for your needs. Hope this helps.

Legal My neighbour has sent me a letter complaining about my son, he works shifts and comes home all different hours and has got quite a noisy car who my neighbour says disturbs him and is breaching the peace. My son is just trying to earn a living and yes his car is noisy but it only makes me stir when he gets in which may happen with any car! He has said he will seek legal action if it continues. Where would my son stand?

Debbie replies.....

A breach of the peace is a matter of criminal law and relates to acts done or threatened to be done which will actually harm a person or his property, or is likely to do harm, if carried out. This complaint is really to do with the nuisance caused by the noise and can be dealt with in one of two ways. You neighbour may chose to make a complaint to the local authority who may write to your son with details of the complaint and warn him that a noise complaint has been received. If further complaints are received a Council representative may come out possibly with noise monitoring equipment to record the alleged noise and assess whether it is loud enough to be classed as a statutory nuisance. In assessing whether the sound from your sons car was a statutory nuisance the Council would take into consideration the volume how long it continues for and the reason for the noise. The fact that the noise is only for a brief amount of time may be not be an excuse if it can be prevented by your son’s car being repaired for instance. If it a statutory nuisance was established then your son may be served with a noise abatement notice requiring him not to make the noise any more, if he did not comply with the notice he could possibly be prosecuted. Alternatively your neighbour could make a claim for an injunction stopping your son making the noise complained of because it is a private nuisance at common law. In a recent claim against a local authority the court decided that a relatively sustained high noise level even for a short period but at a time when the claimants were expected to be asleep passed the threshold of private nuisance. A private claim for an injunction for nuisance can be expensive and there is no guaranteed outcome for either party. If your neighbour succeeded in such a claim your son would be stopped from making the noise anymore and could face imprisonment for contempt of court if he breached the injunction.

Kelvin replies....

K A Goulden electrical ltd have not had the pleasure of installing one of these in a bathroom so I have had to research the subject, it would seem that it is not a do it yourself project! • The LCD TVs are mounted within a sealed unit rated at least to IP65 • Units are flush ie mounted within the wall • The associated wiring is also either within the wall or from the other side of the wall • The work requires Notification for part P of the building regulations This is a fantastic product and most of us would like to lounge in a bath watching TV but it is not an inexpensive project to undertake. It definitely would qualify as an excellent talking point. 17inch screens start at around £1000+ 23inch screens at £1600+ then there are the fitting costs on top, plus notifying building control as it is electrical works in a bathroom. Now is probably the best time to have any electrical works carried out, prices are very competitive due to the recession. So any works from installing a new socket or light point, to having a new fuse board or complete rewires will be very good value at the moment. So strike while the iron is hot! Something else to remember apart from bad or poorly maintained electrical systems - electrical fires can be caused by water and leaks. Water can cause arcing and if not contained within a fire resistant box can and does cause ignition of combustible materials nearby. One reason why the bathroom TV is rated at IP65. Have fun in the tub!

Health I have played football at school and for about 10 years after leaving. I am now 30 and my knees click really badly and first thing in the morning I am very stiff. Is this a football related injury or just something I have? Is there anything I can do to help or am I just stuck with it?

Helen Replies.....

While football and other sporting activities can be a factor in knee stiffness, clicking and pain, there are other factors which can also play an important role in knee problems including occupations or hobbies which involve squatting or kneeling as well as losing muscle strength through stopping regular exercise or leading a sedentary lifestyle. Keeping fit and active throughout life can help prevent problems and you may find by practicing specific exercises regularly you can improve the muscle strength, help joint movement and control of both knees as well as the rest of your body. Some people find taking the supplement Glucosamine sulphate with chondroitin helpful for stiff achy joints, but as with all supplements it needs about 3 months of regular dosing to be able to say if it does or doesn’t work for you. If you should have any pain with locking or giving way of the knees, then it may be worthwhile having an assessment with one of our Chartered Physiotherapists who could advise you if there is any internal problem and guide you with the appropriate exercises.

Brand New Look

Same great quality & service W

hen meeting with Edward Hall he’s very clear on his thoughts on why the Hills Stores in Spalding have stood the test of time. It’s a simple recipe, be proactive, change as times change and keep positive. As a family owned store, Hills Furniture Store offers a far more individual shopping experience on the high street, the Hills Stores are something of a Spalding institution. You will find famous brands in settees, dining tables & chairs and also beds to bedroom furniture. Hills stock a wide selection of upholstery, dining furniture, beds, bedroom furniture, recliners and more from all over the world. Being part of AIS, Britain’s biggest furniture buying group, Ed and his team are able to offer you unbeatable prices on all top brand names and still maintain their traditional values in customer service and care. This is all backed with good old fashioned traditional quality service. After meeting with Ed, he told me: “Our aim is to create an inviting, friendly atmosphere with the help of our staff. We are here to help you and advise, so you can make the best decision. We aim to be your contact in the furniture industry. We all want you to be happy with any dealings you have with Hills Furniture Store. We realise if you are pleased you will tell people and come back, this is why nearly 80% of our business comes from recommendation and re-orders.” Hills have been trading for over 100 years, and have been owned by the current family for over 40 years. There are six family members currently working within the business and are very much involved in the day-to-day running of the business.” Ed talks fondly of his memories of growing up with his parents and grandfather working at the family businesses in town and now, today, is proud that he is doing the same and hopefully delivering to the people of Spalding great products, fantastic service and all at a fair price. Both his parents are still very much involved and offer their experience, which Ed says he would be lost without! Hopefully you have seen the gorgeous new frontage to Hills Furniture Store as you come over High Bridge. This major re-vamp has been possible through the 14  SIMPLY SPALDING

PSICA scheme which was launched in October 2007; Hills have worked closely with English Heritage and SHDC to restore the frontage back to its former glory. The renovation doesn’t just stop at the door; inside you will find a very different furniture store. Contemporary and modern, you feel as if you are moving around one gorgeous home, in the time I was there, I could have replaced all my furniture at home! Make sure next time you are in town you pop in to see the change and what the store has to offer; you can be assured you will be greeted by friendly staff. For me, that’s the beauty of supporting local business, good service at a fair price and ultimately the money spent will go back into our local economy.

“We all want you to be happy

with any dealings you have with Hills Furniture Store“.

Pressures of modern living & starting a family later can often lead to problems with conceiving for many couples. Acupuncture is used to increase the chances of conception by stimulating & regulating ovulation & increasing blood flow to the uterus as well as increasing the health of sperm. It can also be used to reduce the negative effects of anxiety & stress which can hinder conception. Studies have shown women having acupuncture alongside IVF have a higher success rate than those who undergo IVF alone.

Most people in this day and age live busy & stressful lives leading to a whole number of aches, pains and ailments. Whilst most of us seek medication to remedy these, a popular alternative treatment is Chinese Acupuncture. Acupuncture originated from China & developed to other East Asian countries dating as far back as 500 years ago. It is a holistic system that regards pain & illness as a sign that the body is out of balance. The aim of the treatment is therefore to restore the body’s natural balance of energy (Qi) by correcting the underlying cause of the illness. As everyone is unique the treatment is focused on the individual rather than the illness with symptoms displayed relating to one another.

with Jade

the practitioner can access the relevant places on the body. There are typically between 1 & 12 points used within each session. Once the needles are in place they may be left for up to 30 minutes. Upon insertion of a needle you may feel tingling or a slight dull ache but never any pain. Most sessions last between 20 – 40 minutes & you may require between 6 – 12 sessions to achieve the best results from your treatment.

k e e W s s e n e r a w A f a De 28th June - 4th July

Deaf Awareness Week runs from 28th June - 4th July and is organised and co-ordinated by the UK Council on Deafness. It’s supported by over a hundred different deaf charities and organisations across the UK, all working together to raise further awareness of deafness and the wealth of support that is available. This year’s theme is called ‘Look At Me’, which aims to help people develop their understanding of deafness by highlighting the different ways in which communication can be established. To support this important awareness week we have teamed up with local publisher, Need2Know, to giveaway 5 copies of their new book Deafness and Hearing Loss - The Essential Guide. Written by Juliet England, a journalist who has severe hearing loss, the book aims to help people of all ages come to terms with their hearing loss or deafness and overcome the new challenges that daily life might bring. Communication and finding the right support are Juliet’s key messages: ‘Many deaf people do reach their potential and lead full and richly rewarding lives. The aim of this guide is to give you the information and access to resources you need, so that you can become one of them, or help someone else to fulfil their potential.

‘We’ll also look at the different communication tools on the market and how they can help. There have, of course, been great technological strides in recent years, making it easier than ever for deaf people to communicate.’ Packed with practical up-to-date information, the book also covers subjects such as parenting a child with hearing loss, glue ear, coping with deafness in school, deafness and hearing loss at work, new technology, how to make communication easier, and benefits and pensions. Advice for those living with loved ones with hearing problems is also included. To be in with a chance of grabbing yourself a copy, send your name and address to Need2Know, Remus House, Coltsfoot Drive, Woodston, Peterborough, PE2 9JX. Deafness and Hearing Loss is just £8.99 and is available from N2K by calling 01733 898103 or emailing sales@ For further information on other education and health titles available, visit

Be hot on your horse’s health this summer!

As summer arrives it brings with it plenty of potential health hazards for horses. Here’s what to look out for and how to keep your horse healthy and happy over the coming months. Sweet Itch Sweet Itch is the common name for summer eczema. It’s an allergic reaction to bites from a certain species of midge which causes severe itching. The symptoms include restlessness, continual swishing of the tail to keep the flies away and you may notice your horse rubbing an area continuously against trees or fences. Excessive rubbing can cause damage and hair loss in that area too. These flies are around until October.

• Make sure stable doors are closed and windows have fine mesh screens to prevent midges entering the stable. • Creating a breeze in the stable, through the use of wall or ceiling mounted fans, will make it harder for midges to land on a horse when in the stable. • Avoid grazing your horse in a marshy, boggy field, this is where midges breed. Hives Also called ‘urticaria’ or ‘nettle rash’, hives is an allergic reaction seen as bumps on the skin that dent if pressed firmly. These are caused by an allergy to something, such as fly bites or contact/ingestion of a particular plant the horse is sensitive to. Hives can appear suddenly and can also be accompanied by swollen lips, eyelids and mouth. Large swelling can worsen as the days progress, but in most cases hives resolve themselves and you won’t need a vet. However, if the swelling affects your horse’s ability to breath or is severe contact the vet immediately.

There is no cure for sweet itch and, unfortunately, if your horse has an allergy they will suffer from it for life. You can help prevent sweet itch by reducing the potential of midge bites in the following Fly bites ways: There are several kinds of flies that will try and wreak havoc in and around your horse, the most common of which are horseflies and • Make sure a protective fly rug and hood is worn by your horse deerflies. when out at grass. It can also be worn in the stable. • Until October make sure your horse is stabled at dusk and dawn, A deerfly is recognisable from its yellow/orange colour. Horseflies when midges are most active.

on the other hand come in all sorts of colours, shapes and sizes. Their diet is blood. The bites themselves not only hurt, but these flies may transmit harmful diseases, so prevention is definitely the solution. They can be controlled with repellants and electric light insect traps, mounted in the stable. There are other flies to consider too. The blackfly, which also lives on blood, will seek its meal inside the ear, the soft skin of the thighs and around the underside of your horse. If your horse has bloody scabs or crusted wounds, it’s likely they are infected. The best way to control these pests is using a repellant, ear nets and petroleum jelly on the targeted areas. Further pests you may find on and around your horse include small horn flies, sandflies and mosquitos. A good repellent and insecticide will help keep them at bay, also if you can keep your horse away from standing water, there will be less of them.

Sunburn Just like humans, horses can get sun burnt too. Unpigmented areas of your horse’s skin, such as the nose, are particularly vulnerable to sunburn. Avoid turning your horse out during the hottest part of the day in the height of the summer if you can and make sure there are shaded areas your horse can take cover if the heat gets too much. Also apply sun cream and should your horse get burnt apply soothing salves to affected areas. There are many ailments your horse can suffer with over the summer, but take some simple precautions to help protect your horse from as many as possible, and you’ll both enjoy the warmer weather!  SIMPLY SPALDING  19

Yummy Beef Burgers T

Nick Richer of Geo Adams & Sons in The Crescent, Spalding brings you his home made burger recipe. his recipe is made with good quality steak mince but you can use pork, turkey or chicken burgers following the same recipe. Mix the types of herbs and vary the amount of chilli according to your taste. I would suggest leaving out the chilli if cooking for children!

500g Steak Mince 3 or 4 slices of bread, dried for about 30mins and then crumbed 1 egg 1 medium onion, chopped finely 2 cloves of chopped garlic ½ fresh chilli 1tsp mixed herbs 2tbsp milk Salt & pepper to season

Soften the onions in a small amount of oil and frying pan. In a bowl add the mince, onion, spices, egg, milk and half the bread crumbs. Mix well, keep adding more breadcrumbs until the mixture holds together and is tacky to the touch. Make into patties about 2cm thick and 8cm round (this mixture should make about 6-8) I usually oven cook at 200c for 25mins but you can cook in a frying pan, grill or BBQ. Being homemade they are more delicate and I find oven cooking keeps them intact. Serve in a bun with a good quality cheese slice, fried onions, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato plus a portion of chips or potato wedges. As an extra treat, why not add a rasher of bacon too?

Top Tip

These ingredients make great meatballs, just make into rounds, put into an oven proof dish, cover with a tomato pasta sauce, bake at 200c for 45mins and serve with pasta. I personally recommend our delivery partners Spalding Farm Shop for your vegetables and accompaniments to this delicious recipe . Family Life Dens for the

kids! O ver the last couple of months I have been introducing new ideas and resources for outdoor play. I have been focusing on water play at the nursery and all the children and my team of staff have been having some great fun

and getting very wet as well. I have had a lovely response from sharing these experiences with some people even giving me a call to tell me about their own childhood memories of outdoor play. Last week I attended another exciting training day with the Birth to 5 Team and the Early Excellence Consultants. We focused on Den making and construction and the resources the nursery will be receiving to help develop the children’s learning and development. I have very fond memories of making dens as a child and construction goes hand in hand with building and creating role play experiences. My best friend and I would spend hours collecting planks of wood, old bricks, boxes and anything we could use to build a den in her garden. Then the best bit was going inside to gather pillows, blankets, books, teddies and food supplies! It was so much fun and when it started to rain we wouldn’t want to go inside. At home I would use the underneath of the dining room table to make my den or put blankets

 along the side of my bunk bed. I always made sure I had a password as well so my sister couldn’t come in unless I said! I have spoken to many people about their children’s experiences of den making and the response was very disappointing , for a fun activity that’s free to do we don’t seem to be encouraging our generation of children to create these kind of play opportunities. Have we just forgotten how simple play can be for children? We provide toys and games that can make play too complicated and they sadly lose interest too quickly and therefore there is no learning curve for them. I’m going to use a very basic collection of resources for the nursery children to build and create their own dens, such as boxes, a clothes dryer, rugs, blankets, pillows, poles, string and pegs. I’m sure these are items we all have at home that the children could use and of course add to themselves.

ore and more people seem to be growing fruit and vegetables at home but it can be a minefield to get the right crops together. When gardening organic vegetables you should know which plants go well together. Knowing which plants help each other or hurt each other can mean the difference between your garden flourishing or failing. Knowing which plants complement each other will also help your garden from being eaten by those pesky bugs we all hate . Did you know that certain plants actually repel bugs?

he following plants go very well together and will help each other flourish:

l Carrots, beets, garlic, spring onions. l Lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, radishes, spinach, turnips, beets, carrots, cucumbers, onions. l Squash, courgette, cantaloupe, cucumbers, sweetcorn tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, asparagus, green beans, carrots, cucumbers, onions.

In the same respect, there are things that you should not plant together: l Potatoes should not be planted near tomatoes or squash. l Broccoli should not be planted near tomatoes. l Green beans should be kept away from onions. l Cucumbers should be kept away from potatoes.

Now that you know what should and what shouldn’t be planted near each other, there is also one more very important thing you need to keep in mind. Plants will compete against each other for ground, water, and sunlight. Knowing what to plant and when to plant it is something farmers have argued about for years. The one thing that they all have in common though is that they agree that not all plants should be planted at the same time. Spacing out the time when you plant your vegetables is very important. You can’t and don’t want to be harvesting all of your plants at the same time. You can’t eat them all at once, so you shouldn’t plant them all at once. Besides, you don’t want your garden to become all work, it should be a place where you can get some relaxation into your life.

Welcome to

Spalding Hockey Club

odern day hockey, played on an all weather surface, is a fast, skilful and exciting game to play. It can also be very enjoyable when played at a more sedate pace and is a game for all members of the family. At Spalding Hockey Club, we try to accommodate players of all ages and abilities and appreciate that the off pitch social aspect is as important to many as playing the game itself. Venue

In June 2009, Spalding Hockey Club moved to a brand new all weather pitch set in the attractive surroundings of Glen Park in Surfleet. The ‘Revolution’ playing surface, the first of its kind in the world, not only looks magnificent but plays beautifully.

Senior League Teams

For this coming season, which starts in September, the Club will be fielding 8 adult league teams for the first time ever. As a result of an active youth policy and renewed interest from local players, there will be 3 Ladies teams playing in the Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire League and 5 Men’s teams playing in the East Leagues. The Men’s 1st team has enjoyed an outstanding year, winning their league in great style and gaining promotion for the coming season.

Junior Players

The Club is working hard to get funding together for a purpose built clubroom with changing facilities on site. Given the current economic climate, this is an uphill struggle but the Club plans to upgrade their current temporary facilities for next season.

The Club relies heavily on its membership to cover the ever increasing cost of running an amateur sports club and so financial assistance from any individual or company would be appreciated.

New member contact

New members, whether interested in playing, umpiring, team management or just wishing to be part of a thriving local organisation with its family based ethos, are always very welcome. Kelly Varley, who has joined the Club recently, wrote: “Following the birth of my first child last June I was looking for a new hobby to get me out of the house, meet new people and to try and improve my fitness/fatness! I had wanted to get back into hockey for such a long time after enjoying the game at school. I emailed Roz from the Spalding Hockey Club website and she informed me of the training sessions on a Tuesday and the beginners on a Friday. When I arrived at the pitch for the first time, my nerves hit me like a ton of bricks and I almost turned around and went back home! I managed to get myself onto the pitch somehow and was greeted by Fred’s friendly smile. He welcomed me and set me up in a team as they were playing in sixes as a bit of fun over the summer. It started well but by the end I could barely breathe! After more encouragement from Roz and Lou, I made it once again to training and stuck at it due to the friendly nature of the Club. My fitness began to improve and after a few months played my first league game which was also quite nerve wrecking! With Kate and Frances allowing me to grow instead of pointing out my mistakes, I have enjoyed many games and really look forward to next season. Anyone thinking about joining should just give it a go, I have seen many new members welcomed in the same way I was. The Club holds coaching sessions for boys and girls aged 5 to 14 on Saturday mornings 9.30 to 11.00am between September and May. There is also the opportunity for young players to participate in local friendly, County based and National competitions through the season. Many of the Club’s youngsters have attended the Lincolnshire Junior Development Centre sessions based at Surfleet and gone on to represent the County at various age levels.

Hockey for Adult Beginners.

The Club has an active year round social programme with something for everyone. The highlight of the year is the Dinner and Presentation Evening in April which was attended by almost 150 members and guests earlier this year.

Several parents saw how much their children were enjoying playing hockey and wanted to have a go. As a result, informal sessions are now held on Friday evenings, 6.00 to 7.00pm for adult beginners and those who last played a while back at school. These evenings have proved to be extremely popular with the emphasis on gentle and social.

For more information please see the Club’s website or contact Club Chairman Fred Morris on 01775 724832 or email  SIMPLY SPALDING  29

Tarot Reading for the star signs in July By Jenni Tarochi Aries (21st March - 20th April)

This month your inner self should be in a state of peace, harmony and balanced to deal with business or property matters. There’s a sensitive financial issue in which comes to rock your float but it’s nothing major that you can’t keep under wraps. Also this month amongst the victorious changes happening within your career, it may still make you feel unsettled as there’s much still to do however, you remind yourself not to be in solitude but to celebrate with others, to embrace and appreciate. Especially for some who feels their love life is an ongoing losing battle, perhaps you can also see what’s in store with your closest of relations as they have plenty of ideas, choices and dreams ahead, the problem is which one is real?

Taurus (21st April - 20th May)

Amongst the authority you project, the discipline and order you bring to chaos, you can’t seem to control much of your responsibilities partly due to projects you’re working on this month seems to be heading nowhere fast. Your finances are also unsettled as it needs a fixed direction, but yet at the same time you are to let go of both monetary and personal possessions as to some who’s heart got broken this month is a sad and melancholy month. Soon enough though you will adapt yourself to a fresh way of thinking that’ll bring a sweeping change, such as new business or outdoor opportunities. With your closest of relations there’s a warm feeling of being cared for under their wings and the expression of creativity all around.

Gemini (21st May - 21st June)

Libra (23rd September - 23rd October)

What two or more situations are you handling with ease and one with total chaos because you know you can only juggle so much in life therefore you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself. Sometimes it is the over juggling and imbalances that you fear your image is being tarnished by a label of weakness or incompetence. The good start you’ll be doing is to take a step back, reassess and view your blind spots and pick up the pieces slowly as you climb up for victory. In your love life there’s much that you are focusing at the moment in your practical routines that you are letting go of control for a while and let your lover make most of the decisions to give their version of the kind of shape they’d want to create within the relationship.

Scorpio (24th October - 21st November)

In love as you are this month, you present your sympathetic and loving side, where you are tender hearted towards the weaker souls, feeling blessed to have the emotions and practical new beginnings with your closest of relations also. However for some of you there could be two kinds of emotions that you’re in love with demanding for your attention to pick the right kind that is of a long lasting one. Financially you may surprise yourself to be spending more over your budgets when you intended to be saving, but luckily this month your practical skills comes into force in making sure you’re financially safe. You approach your career with a pressing decision that needs to be made if your life is to improve further, even so if you feel the fruits of your labour is yet to give you satisfactory returns.

Sagittarius (22nd November - 21st December)

A long suppressed emotion could erupt this month unless you focus on the many progress happening around, such as the way you approach your career and finances with the focus on development and advancement. The way you demand on receiving good kinds of communications and solutions from people or none at all. Either to move on up and beyond the same old rut in your love life or just to forget the bad past and its connections all together. All this energy you possess this month to turn negativity around to a progressing new start because you crave the successful impact from practical beginnings and the security required to pursue goals.

It’s time to awaken your mind with the kinds of communications heading your way this month, so that you are well coordinated, contracts, new plans and miner-alterations to documents can make you feel a little imbalanced but satisfying too. Financially there are many choices and ideas presented to you, but be careful to see what will really do well for you as not all that glitters is gold. In your career projects should be coming along nicely and your hard work and determination for advancement will most attract others to your direction. Overall you should be feeling rejuvenated from all kinds of healing works, communications, contracts and positive changes, this includes your love life too. With your closest of relations expect plenty of occasions to celebrate and invitations.

Cancer (22nd June - 23rd July)

Capricorn (22nd December - 19th January)

Leo (23rd July - 22nd August)

Aquarius (20th January - 18th February)

Things going on all over different directions so how can you get a handle on it all, when there’s just so much weight in your way or on your shoulders, and to add to this weight the past issues are coming back yet for you to resolve. However luck is still with you this month your financials are turning towards a better fortune, just keep your eye on the kinds who’s after them for wasteful momentary pleasures at your expense but you don’t need to be too watchful that you may end up missing out on other opportunities for advancement. Your career is graduating slowly but surely momentarily you experience the liberation in your private life. However with your closest of relations the kind of liberation is to face the facts that no matter what you do you are paused this month to make any plans or changes with them.

This month you could be asking yourself ‘Am I such a fool for demolishing the old and make way for the new?’ But what if this freedom from old is a blessing in disguise especially if it’s a freedom from the heartache you’ve just been through. Your finances may still be an ongoing battle but be careful on risking even further than necessary, you don’t want to have a new kind of chaos especially if you are thinking of a new kind of freedom in your career like a career change. Overall happy successful communications are around your love life and deep within your psyche you should have more clarity to discern what your hearts and minds are saying and how you can keep a hold of control in private matters also. Sadly there may be possible little misunderstandings and arguments of a temporary nature with your closest of relations.

Virgo (23rd August - 22nd September)

For some of you this month tension could be rising from discontent, you are disappointed and anxious regarding a financial loan. You need to change your outmoded way of doing things to get different and satisfactory results, such as find the authority within you to project more power and order. You approach your career with determination towards new plans and changes as with a lot of everyday practical matters you want no unfinished business lying around any longer. That includes your love life too, in which for some you wonder why things were left unfinished or why you know enough is enough but you still want more.

You are likely to be immature in your approach towards life this month, such as scattering your energy and change of purpose. You could be demanding and is likely to be disinterested in studies or showing a lack of commitment or jealousy. You need to unwind and reward yourself some well-earned relaxation, especially with your finances you need to reassess your next plan of action. Work needs to be balanced with play. Your views are not appreciated by those around you - especially in your love life when you feel your hard work is all for nothing, you should understand that those feelings can bring unfavourable news. Do not become rebellious - remain receptive to your desires to resolve the major issues in your life and restructure relationships, take examples as these are such methods you will be focusing with your closest of relations.

You could bury your head in the sand as a way to dull the senses and forget reality. Perhaps burn up your energy, and waste it by erupts of emotions as they build up and over power you. However as well as you blindfold yourself, you decide to pick up the phone, be clear to communicate for a positive impact as an end result that peace and balance is now restored. Unfortunately this month you may be pressured to work harder towards your career. With your love life you want commitment and stability that you could appear more so possessive this month when really you are showing the emotional values of the relationship.

Pisces (19th February - 20th March)

New circumstances and fresh ways of thinking are the focal points this month as you work hard for all kinds of growth. There’s much to think about to make use of the best possible alternative to succeed. A new approach is required to achieve the harmony and balance that is desired. Don’t give up but put in the best foot forward to achieve success, you have to make adjustments and decide on your plan of action, especially in your love life if a partner is acting difficult it could be nothing personal. Financially though things are picking up towards more positivity. With your closest of relations there could be several trips back to memory lane together, but all this should be seen as positive steps to measuring how far you’ve come if it gives you a weird sense you are on the right path so not to worry.
