A blink of an eye and that was Christmas over! This year is the first for us as a family of four as my baby girl is five months old and my little boy is two and a half. This year has been magical as my toddler has really started to ‘get’ what it’s all about. We managed to rack up a whopping five Santa visits during December….two trips to Baytree, Breakfast with Santa at The Busy Bean Café, a Christmas party at Holbeach Servicemans Club and Top of the Poppets at the South Holland Centre. For me Christmas is all about family, we tend to alternate between my family and the in-laws each year. Either way it’s a house full and that’s what I love, a busy festive period and this year it was our turn to do lunch! To be honest I prefer being at home so I always welcome it when it comes round to us. But now it’s all about the new year and as we head into 2018 we can look back on the past year and plan our resolutions for the next one. There’s all the usual ones – lose weight, learn a new skill, have a better work/life balance but I feel fortunate that I am pretty happy with my lot at the minute, so mine is quite simple and to take more care of myself. Being a mum of two has certainly pushed me this year as well as running a business and home and to be honest I haven’t really looked after myself so that’s what 2018 is all about. Back to this edition and we look at looking after animals in the winter, getting prom ready as well as weighing up if it’s better to move house or improve your existing home. This time of year is often a period when we contemplate packing up and moving, so make sure you check out our guide before you potentially make such a costly decision. Finally I would like to say a huge thank you to the team behind Simply magazines, from the people in the office selling adverts, writing features, our design studio processing artwork and the accounts office to the team of distributors who do such an amazing job of getting the magazine to you every month come rain or shine and of course our loyal advertisers who use the magazine to promote their business every month, without them we simply wouldn’t be able to produce the magazine. £108,000 raised for community groups
Members of Lincolnshire Co-op have clubbed together to raise £108,000 for local community groups. From scouts and sports clubs to health networks, there’s an army of groups around the county and they’re all making life better for people in their communities. That’s why, together with members, Lincolnshire Co-op has been fundraising for 167 local groups through its Community Champions scheme. Over 147,000 members helped raise the total simply by shopping with their dividend card.
Senior Community and Education Coordinator Ben James said: “We’re delighted to have raised such a brilliant amount for these community groups. “They each have a huge impact on the areas around them, whether they’re Rainbow or Scouts clubs, sports groups or dementia support networks, and this money will help them continue making a difference to people’s lives. “We can’t wait to see how this money benefits them all.” A donation was made through the Community Champions scheme every
time a member shopped in a Lincolnshire Co-op outlet in September, October and November. Proceeds from the carrier bag charge and colleagues’ Halloween fundraising also went into the pot. The total is divided up between the groups, according to how much has been raised locally. Most People Campaign SHDC’s ‘Most People’ campaign is continuing to raise awareness about the duty of care that applies to residents when it comes to disposing of waste. The initiative was recently launched by East Lindsey District Council, Boston Borough Council and South Holland District Council with the authorities joining forces in the fight against fly-tipping. The campaign’s main message is to highlight the dangers of choosing someone other than a licensed waste carrier or a local council to dispose of unwanted items, with residents running the risk of prosecution and heavy fines as a consequence. According to Keep Britain Tidy, 47 per cent of people don’t know they are responsible by law if a third party they have asked or paid to dispose of their waste, subsequently fly-tips it. The following recent cases in South Holland have resulted in heavy financial penalties, after fly-tips were traced back to residents by the council’s Environmental Enforcement Officer: • Around 20 bags of household waste dumped near Crowland – total penalty including fine/cost/compensation £1,730 • Large amounts of household waste fly-tipped near Crowland - total penalty conditional discharge, cost/compensation £315 • Household waste dumped near Gedney Hill - cost/compensation £362
• Large fly tip of building waste near Crowland – total penalty including fine/cost/ compensation £1,119. Jon Challen, Service Manager for Public Protection at East Lindsey District Council, and Chair of the East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership said: “The Community Safety Partnership fully supports the work being done by District Councils to help educate residents about safe and approved ways of disposing of their waste. “The partnership wants to ensure that residents avoid making the mistake of using a rogue trader by checking that they have a waste carrier permit.” As part of the Most People campaign, we would like to remind residents that if they use someone other than their local Council to take away unwanted items, through an advert, social media or those who approach residents directly, it is advised they check they are a registered waste carrier by asking to see their Waste Carriers Licence, if they are not registered, they could be a rogue trader. When disposing of unwanted waste, follow these steps – • Ask to see a waste
carrier permit - this is issued by the Environment Agency • Ask for a waste carrier number and contact the Environment Agency directly on 03708 506 506 for a free instant waste carrier check. check on-line at https://environment.data.gov.uk/publicregister/view/search-waste-carriersbrokers • Ask for a receipt or a transfer notice before the waste is taken away • Make a note of the vehicle registration and vehicle details if possible • If fly-tipping is witnessed, report it to your local Council. Responsible Dog Ownership Irresponsible dog owners are being reminded to clean up after their pets as part of a campaign by South Holland District Council to crackdown on dog fouling. Earlier this year, the authority launched the ‘Bag it Bin it’ campaign, targeting areas that have received high reports of dog fouling. Our new Assistant Environmental Protection Officer Oliver Abrams will be continuing to promote the initiative as part of his Dog Warden duties. The Council’s Environmental Protection team is keen to remind people of the campaign, as dog fouling reports traditionally increase in the winter months
with evenings getting darker. Cllr Anthony Casson, South Holland District Council’s portfolio holder for public protection, said: “The issue of dog fouling in the district concerns residents and is something we are continually looking to tackle. “Whilst we realise that the majority of dog owners are responsible, with the nights currently drawing in a minority may feel they can get away with letting their pets foul under the cover of darkness. “Bag it Bin it is all about raising awareness of the need for dog owners to act responsibly and properly dispose of their pet’s mess. We would also like to

remind dog owners that by not cleaning up mess, they could be hit hard in the pocket.” Anyone who does not clear up their dog’s mess may be committing an offence under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and can be liable to a maximum penalty of £1,000. Dog owners are advised to take plastic bags with them on walks and dispose of them in any red dog bin or letter bin; or indeed take them home to put in their own refuse bin. Residents can also report dog fouling in the district online at www.sholland.gov.uk or by calling 01775 761761.

Controlling Migration From spring 2018 two community wardens will patrol parts of South Holland in a bid to develop safer and stronger communities. The roles have been created by South Holland District Council after the authority was successful in bidding for £127,000 from the government’s Controlling Migration scheme. The wardens will carry out regular patrols to tackle actual and perceived anti-social behaviour in identified ‘hot spot’ areas. The scheme aims to address community concerns around anti-social behaviour and community safety by reassuring residents with factual information and building
cohesive community relationships. Cllr Gary Taylor, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said: “This is extremely welcome news; the wardens will make a positive difference to communities across the district. “They will provide a reassuring presence and help to build trusting and valued community relationships through greater tolerance and improved understanding. “Whilst South Holland is generally a safe place to live and visit, we remain fully committed to working with our partners to develop safer and stronger communities. The wardens will help achieve this through enforcement, education and raising

awareness.” The wardens will be in place for at least two years and will support local communities by raising awareness of acceptable behaviour, social norms and customs as well laws and legislation. They will also give local residents a voice and ensure that any concerns they have are valued and addressed. The wardens will be able to issue Fixed Penalty Notices and take enforcement action when necessary. We’re launching a new campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of secondhand smoke, 12 months after we introduced a smoke free code warning of smoking near children. Our new campaign is aimed at encouraging smokers to consider the health risks of others

before lighting up. For example, did you know that secondhand smoke leads to an increased risk of strokes and heart disease, as well as ear and respiratory infections, particularly in children? s the South East Local Plan, that among other things determines Planning policies and housing allocations for the next twenty years, enters the final phase of the inspection process, I thought I would touch upon one particular area where I am often questioned. Section 106 agreements are planning obligations under (Section 106) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. They are a mechanism which make a development proposal acceptable in planning terms, that would not otherwise be acceptable. They are site specific and often referred to as ‘developer contributions’. Common uses of planning obligations are to secure affordable housing, but might additionally include road infrastructure improvements, new schools, play equipment, contributions to town centre improvements and medical facilities, dependent on the size and scale of the development, as it has to be financially viable for the developer. A planning obligation can be subject to conditions, some of which have to be carried out before building commences, some after so many houses have been built and some at the end. If the section 106 is not complied with, it is enforceable against the person that entered into the obligation and any subsequent owner. The section 106 can be enforced by injunction. One of the reasons I mention this is due to a number of enquiries I have had about medical facilities, in Holbeach in particular. I am often asked about what has happened to the money in the various 106 agreements and why hasn’t one been built, when there is a clear 106 agreement for one. In most cases it has yet to be triggered as the developer has not built the required number of houses that enables the payment to be made and the payments do not go anywhere near to covering the full cost anyway. As I have said to many people, building it
is the simple part, proving the need and attracting the doctors is the hard part. Even if the money is paid over it will not happen if the the NHS who consult with the local Clinical Commissioning Groups and local medical practices do not think there is a need for one. They are the people we need to convince. Patient Participation Groups have a vital role to play here and can help to persuade their local doctors of the need to expand their practices or join together to build new larger facilities to meet the need. Local politicians like myself can help by providing evidence and can set up meetings with the relevant people to enable a solution. When you are on the phone or in a queue waiting to get an appointment it is easy to jump to the conclusion that a medical practice cannot cope, that it is bulging at the seams, but convincing the NHS and Clinical Commissioning Groups of the need is another thing altogether. In my case in Holbeach, it is clear there is no strategic plan for the future of medical facilities in place, the Sustainable Transformation Plan which is the NHS’s answer to everything apparently, is still waiting to go out to public consultation and one wonders whether it ever will. It is even more difficult to get an accountable person around the table, just someone who can make a decision would be nice! Well as we enter the New Year full of hope, I for one am looking forward to someone making a decision on the future of medical facilities in Holbeach sooner rather than later, but don’t rely on 106 agreements to do it on their own. Where there is a will there is a way!

About home credit and loan sharks Citizens Advice ...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems
Home credit, or doorstep loans, is where you borrow money and the lender calls at your home to collect the repayments. The loans are usually for smaller amounts and you will be charged a high rate of interest for borrowing in this way. Checking a lender is authorised The law says that home credit lenders have to be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Agents of home credit lenders do not need their own FCA authorisation but can come under the authorisation of the lender that they represent. You can find out whether a home credit lender is authorised by checking the Register on the FCA website at www.fca.org.uk. If someone offers to lend you money on the doorstep, it’s a good idea to ask to see their or their lender’s authorisation. If they don’t have one, they are operating illegally and you should avoid borrowing from them. Complaining about home credit Many home credit lenders belong to the Consumer Credit Association (CCA) and follow the CCA Code of Practice. If you have a problem with a CCA member, you can complain to the CCA. You can get more information about the Consumer Credit Association and its code of practice on the CCA website at www.ccauk.org. It is a criminal offence for a lender to call at your home to offer to lend you money unless the visit is made in response to a written and signed request. If an agreement is not properly made, the lender may not be able to force you to repay the money. If you are not sure whether an agreement has been properly made, you can get help from an adviser, for example at a Citizens Advice. If a complaint about a home credit lender cannot be resolved with the lender or by the Consumer Credit Association, the compliant

At Spalding Parish C of E Day School, learning has been linked to Anti-Bullying Week across the curriculum. Anti-Bullying Week shines a spotlight on bullying and encourages all children, teachers and parents to take action against bullying throughout the year. The theme this year is ‘All Different, All Equal’. In Year 6 in English, they used the film trailer ‘Wonder’ to understand what the world was like from a boy who stood out for all of the wrong reasons. Using the film trailer, a synopsis of the book written by R.J. Palacio and a range of life experiences the children were able to answer a range of thought provoking questions. The
The Friends’ of Wisbech Grammar Schools Michaelmas Ball took place in the Skelton Hall. The evening took on a glamorous fairytale theme where the Friends’ held various fundraising events throughout the evening. A year of planning and preparation by the committee ensured the evening was a magical night for the 200+ guests who attended. Simon Rowe, KL.FM breakfast presenter, hosted the auction and various games where money was raised for both school projects to benefit pupils and the charity, Scotty’s Little Soldiers. The School is committed to fundraising

children used a ‘Thinking Map’ to classify words and phrases to produce an oppositional view of life with and life without bullying. They used the key vocabulary ‘antonyms and synonyms’ to explain the differing views. Thoughtful, emotive words and language features were developed through valuable partner talk. The plan was then used to write an oppositional piece of writing. Y6 were excited to be able to share their learning with their Acting Head Teacher, Diane Mulley, when she joined them in their lesson. Y6 children are now completing an ‘Acts of Kindness’ activity set by Spalding Town Library during their recent visit which also links with the book ‘Wonder’.

Guests also enjoyed live music from 80’s band ‘Wild boys’ and a delicious three-course dinner, prepared by the School’s catering team and served by 6th Form pupils. Chair of the Friends’ Committee, Louise O’Connor said, “The evening would not have
been possible without the support of a whole range of people within and outside School, our sponsors, and the hard-working committee. A sum of £11,000 was raised, and we are also excited to announce that our fundraising efforts will continue into the New Year with a quiz where all the proceeds will go to Scotty’s Little Soldiers”. Headmaster, Mr. Chris Staley said, “A sincere thank you to the incredible Friends’ committee for all the hard work that went into ensuring that the Michaelmas Ball was a fantastic success.”

Looking after your Dog this Winter
Exposure to winter’s dry, cold air and chilly rain, sleet and snow can cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin, but these aren’t the only discomforts pets can suffer. Winter walks can become downright dangerous if chemicals from de-icers are licked off of bare paws. To help prevent cold weather dangers from affecting your pet’s health, we have compiled a list of how you can help him this winter. • Repeatedly coming out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can cause itchy, flaking skin. Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet as soon as he comes inside, paying special attention to his feet and inbetween the toes. Remove any snow balls from between his foot pads. • Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. If your dog is long-haired, simply trim him to minimize the clinging ice balls, salt crystals and de-icing chemicals that can dry his skin, and don’t neglect the hair between his toes. If your dog is short-haired, consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear. • Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells. Washing too often can remove essential oils and increase the chance of developing dry, flaky skin. If your pooch must be bathed, ask your vet or groomer to recommend a moisturizing shampoo and/or rinse. • Massaging petroleum jelly or other paw protectants into paw pads before going outside can help protect from salt and chemical agents. Booties provide even more coverage and can
also prevent sand and salt from getting lodged between bare toes and causing irritation. Use pet-friendly ice melts whenever possible. • Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. • Pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in winter. Feeding your pet a little bit more during the cold weather months can provide muchneeded calories, and making sure she has plenty of water to drink will help keep her well-hydrated and her skin less dry. • Make sure your animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect. • Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed. In addition, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death.

Helping Birds in Bad Weather Make sure seed is accessible and dry Hopper or tube feeders are good at protecting seed from wet weather, and they dole out food as it is eaten. Sweep snow off of platform feeders, or clear a place on the ground where you can scatter seed for groundfeeding species such as sparrows, towhees, juncos, and doves. If snow build-up is a problem… Keep extra feeders for use in bad weather Keep an extra-large-capacity tube feeder in the garage for use when nasty weather comes. It not only gives the birds another place to eat, which means more birds can eat at one time, but it also cuts down on our trips outside for refilling the feeders. Other extras to consider having: peanut feeder, suet feeder, satellite feeder (for the small birds to use), and a hopper feeder. Scatter seed in sheltered places Not all birds will venture to your feeder. Some species prefer to skulk in the thickets, brambles, and other secure places. For these species, consider scattering some seed (black-oil sunflower, sunflower bits, peanut bits, mixed seed) in your hedges and bushes, or even along the edge of a wooded area. Put out high-energy foods Food such as suet, meat scraps, and peanut butter are great. Fat gives the biggest energy boost to winter birds, and without enough energy to keep them going, many songbirds would not survive a cold winter night. Suet (the fat removed from processed beef), meat scraps, and peanut butter all provide fat to birds that eat them. If you don’t have a suet feeder, use a mesh onion bag. Suspend it from a tree branch or iron feeder hook. To feed peanut butter, drill oneinch holes in a foot-long section of a small log. Insert a screw eye into one end of the log. Smear peanut butter into the holes and suspend the feeder from the screw eye. Furnish your bird houses. Imagine you’re a bird roosting in a nest box on a cold winter’s night. Wouldn’t it be nice to snuggle down into some dried grass or dry wood shavings in the bottom of the house? Wood shavings work well, too. Spalding couple who took their eight-year-old son on a round-the-world trip are now halfway through their adventure. Nigel, Louise And Kian Chapman have spent time on the west coast of America, in Japan and took six weeks touring the north and south islands of New Zealand. They’re now in Australia. Here’s Nigel’s latest update for Simply:
T
he first week of the Australian leg of our trip has presented the biggest challenges of our three months abroad so far - with two swift enforced changes of accommodation and an encounter with insects which wouldn’t be out of place on I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! The first hiccup came when we realised (whilst at Christchurch Airport in New Zealand ready to fly to Sydney) that the AirBnB accommodation we’d booked for our first five nights in Australia had been cancelled by the host. With little affordable alternatives to choose from at that late stage, we hastily booked a couple of nights in Sydney Central Backpackers. That
was swiftly reduced to one after our first night. We hadn’t booked beds with springs providing acupuncture and had not reckoned on “shared facilities” meaning with cockroaches the size of Tasmania. Fortunately, other wildlife we’ve encountered in the country has been much more welcome - a possum, kangaroos (on a golf course!), koala bears high up in the trees and Australian King parrots feeding out of our hands. Sydney is a wondrous joy and its appeal is clear to see. Yes, it’s best known for its opera house and harbour bridge and, no, they don’t disappoint from afar or at close quarters. But to fail to mention the city’s many other attractions would
be doing it a major disservice. Circular Quay and Darling Harbour are a pleasure to wander around, with seemingly as much going on, on the water as along the quaysides with ferries and water taxis jostling for position, and at Circular Quay the awesome sight of cruise ships harboured. All along the waterfronts are buzzing bars, cafés and restaurants, with buskers providing a backdrop of entertainment. We took a guided tour of The Rocks area, learning about the history of criminals being sent there from the other side of the world, the site of the city’s first hospital and witnessing the public housing flat a woman in her 80s is refusing
to leave despite the council wanting to demolish the block. No doubt the gaudy flashing sign she has in the window of the top floor flat overlooking Circular Quay is adding to the council’s frustration. The tour was a clever concept set up by the university graduate who led us around - they’re free (attracting lots of budget-conscious travellers) and are funded by tips (which are plentiful due to the quality and content). Elsewhere in the city, Darling Quarter was home to perhaps the best playground Kian has ever come across. in an attractive tree-lined square (with a McDonald’s) and you’ll be somewhere near what this place offers. For me though, Australia will really have to go some to better New Zealand. In the last edition I told of the sights and attractions of the North Island. Well, the even more scenic South Island trumped it. We kayaked in Abel Tasman National Park, biked and luged in Queenstown, hiked to glacier viewing in Franz Josef, cruised in the mesmerising Milford Sound fjord and, in Christchurch, heard first-hand stories about the earthquakes which devastated the place in 2010 and 2011 and witnessed a city clearly still getting back on its feet.
It’s those sort of experiences which are enriching our trip further and reminding all three of us how lucky we are to be able to undertake it. Christmas is in Perth with a friend of ours who emigrated from England five years ago. The Christmas trees and festive decorations in the towns and shops all seem a bit, well, wrong alongside sunshine and temperatures in the high 80s. On the plus side, the preparations all start much later than in the UK and are much more mooted. Happy New Year! Well, wasn’t that over in the blink of an eye? All that planning, preparing, shopping and wrapping and here we are in January with not much to show for it other than clothes that are a bit too tight, a huge pile of black sacks for the bin men and a bank balance that could do with being a bit healthier! After such a highly anticipated event, The New Year and the return to normality can be a little depressing. Dark nights, long hours at work and the longing for some excitement and fun that invariably comes around with Spring & Summer. I am talking about Christmas, aren’t I? Maybe not… Pregnancy is a bit like the build up to Christmas…exciting, full of promise, family, love and new beginnings. Labour and birth can also be likened to the emotional meltdown we have the day before Christmas Eve when we’ve had enough, have run out of patience and don’t think we will ever actually get to the bit we have been waiting for. Your first few days as a new mum are like Christmas Day and Boxing Day all rolled into one. Lots of friends and family come to see you and you are still riding the hormonal high of the birth. But what happens when all that settles down? Your first few months as a new mum can be very much like the dark, drab, uninspiring days of January when we mostly feel fat, broken, unloved and exhausted. Falling in love with your baby at first sight is an amazing and magical time for women, but
not everyone feels like that. I’m going to let you in on a secret about not loving your baby straight away or even liking them. Or motherhood for that matter. It’s normal. Yes, that’s right. Normal. Perfectly acceptable. The anti-climax of birth is just like January blues apart from one really important detail: everybody understands about the January blues and accepts them for what they are. They know they will get over it and they know that just because you feel that way now, doesn’t mean the rest of your year is going to be a write off. Feeling sad, lonely or overwhelmed after what is perceived as the happiest event of your life is a really hard thing to deal with. So much pressure! Just what you need when you are sleep deprived and on the edge! If you are finding life physically or emotionally challenging after the birth of your baby, try to give yourself a break. I can guarantee you are your own worst critic. Eat and drink – your mental health and energy levels rely on it. Ask for help often and don’t feel guilty about doing it. Help comes in all sorts of forms…babysitting, having a chat and a cup of tea with a friend or someone to do your food shop. Remember that almost every other woman on the planet feels like you do right now and it’s OK. It is all going to be OK.

Keep on Smiling Oral health is something none of us should take for granted, so no matter what your age, or how many teeth you have, it’s important to look after them.
To keep your smile in tip top condition, or if you’re looking to start a new regime today, why not follow these tips from the British Dental Health Foundation. • When it comes to dental hygiene, prevention is better than cure. Always listen to your dentist’s advice when it comes to booking check-ups, as regular visits can help nip problems in the bud before they become more serious ones. • Look at your diet - a poor one can have adverse effects on your teeth. Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks, especially children, as the acid in them can lead to decay. Stick to foods and drinks which are kinder to teeth like cheese, crackers, breadsticks, raw vegetables, plain water and milk.
• Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. During the night the flow of saliva (the mouth’s cleaning system) slows down, leaving the mouth more at risk to decay. Brushing is a preventative measure, so it’s important to do this first thing in the morning and before you go to bed. • Floss or use interdental brushes, as these help clean away any food debris caught between your teeth, which in turn helps cut the risk of gum disease. • Invest in an electric toothbrush - tests have shown these are twice as effective as manual brushing. Plus many newer models also feature twominute timers, to help you make sure you brush for the recommended period of time.
Children and their Teeth
Establish good dental habits from an early age and your children will thank you for it in the long run. Start brushing your baby’s teeth with a fluoride toothpaste as soon as their first milk tooth breaks through.
Did you know NHS dental care for children is free? Take your children to the dentist whenever you attend for a check up, so they can see you being examined and get to know there’s nothing to be afraid of. And take them from as early as possible get used to the surgery and the dentist too. • Look after your teeth - genuine accidents do happen, but be careful. Regular check-ups are important to ensure you always have the best possible vision and can also detect underlying health problems and signs of potentially serious conditions before they become fully established. Children’s eye care is taken very seriously too and it is recommended that every preschool youngster has an eye examination as vision develops very quickly in the early years and it is important that children receive their free NHS test. If spectacles are required, the Eye Care Centre has over 600 frames available to suit all ages and tastes, from classic looks to the latest designer ranges. A night at the
f you’re studying for your final exams and preparing to leave school, college or sixth form shortly, chances are you’ve got another milestone event to look forward too - your leavers’ prom. A rite of passage marking the next step into the big, wide world, the leavers’ ball is a great way to round off your educational career. But did you know proms haven’t always been the elaborate, inclusive event they are today? One group says they evolved from the upperclass debutante balls held in high society, where girls in white dresses and gloves were escorted into a grand hall for their official introduction to the social dating scene. The word prom – short for promenade – equates to the grand marching
at the beginning of an important social event. The first high school proms served a similar function to these balls - as the first adult social event for teenagers, where they could get dressed-up. And over the years they’ve gone from being college gatherings to the high school extravaganzas celebrated in the 21st century. Proms are an iconic, integral part of the high school experience - complete with stretch limos, fancy ballrooms, live bands, kings and queens, and, most importantly, dresses worthy of movie stars. For many young people especially girls - the prom is probably the biggest night of their lives so far, and will certainly entail plenty of planning. The number one priority for
most wannabe Prom Queens is, of course, finding the right dress. But movie star glamour needn’t break the bank; if you don’t want to fork out for a new gown, you could always hire one - many shops selling them also have a rental section. And for the chaps, there are plenty of places offering suit and tuxedo hire services, if you don’t have your own, or one you can borrow. Once your outfit is sorted girls, there’s the question of make-up, nails and hair to tackle. Once
you’ve got your look in place, the final thing is to make sure your entrance is a fitting one. The bigger the better seems to be the motto when it comes to prom transport - in recent years students have arrived on tractors, buses and even helicopters. Alternatively scooter, bike or space hoppers make an equally fitting statement - and cost next to nothing to boot. So, once you’ve got all that lot sorted, there’s only one thing left to do - enjoy your night!

If you have chosen not to have your hair and make-up done professionally, then it is very important that you take some time to plan and perfect your look. Give yourself time to practice your hair and make-up so that you can check that your chosen look will look good with your dress and to ensure you can do it so there are no last-minute meltdowns. To look picture perfect at your Prom, there are some simple rules to follow. Emma Lawson, Hair and Beauty
Technician at Boston College, offers the following advice to achieve that perfect prom look. “When thinking about make-up for your Prom, the most important thing is a good foundation base that will last all evening. 1. Make sure you begin by applying moisturiser. 2. Use a make-up primer to give you a good base to apply your foundation on. 3. Make sure your foundation matches your skin tone and you blend it in to your hairline and under your chin and jawline properly. 4. Once you have applied your
foundation, use a translucent powder to set your foundation. Jo Whitwell, Hairdressing Coordinator says “For that perfect hair do, try and make sure you do the following”: 1. Don’t wash your hair on the day you want it putting up, one day old hair is best. 2. Prepare your hair before putting it up by adding in rollers or curling with irons, tongs or wands. 3. If your hair is fine or shoulder length, a hair piece can add fullness. 4. Use plenty of grips but make sure they are hidden and place them so the wavy side is against the scalp.

Holbeach Focus The market town of Holbeach is a bustling town within South Holland and the parish is one of the largest by area in England, and extends from Cambridgeshire to the Wash. Tigers Bar and Social Club Tigers Bar and Social club has undergone a transformation over the last twelve months with the club house function room being improved and refurbished. The room now has new modern feel to it with new bar flooring heating and wiring. The room can now cater for any type of function and has formal seating for 110 guests in the room. All of the toilet facilities have been modernised and new disabled toilet has been constructed.
Works are currently underway to open up the new front entrance and refurbish the kitchen. The club is open to everyone. There is also a membership scheme which provides among other things a discount at the bar. Once Christmas is over, it’s easy to feel a little lost. We’ve eaten to excess, we’ve got stressed with the shopping and we’ve obsessed over making sure that for one day of the year, everything is perfect. By the time January comes around, it can feel like we need a bit of a boost to get going again. So how can we meet the new year with a spring in our step?
Banish those blues
We all know that exercise helps us to lose those extra pounds (according to research, on average you consume 6,000 calories on Christmas day!), but it’s also good for the mind. Not only can exercise reduce the risk of health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, but it can make you feel better emotionally. When we’re feeling stressed or depressed, it’s easy to give in to comfort eating, which can develop into a vicious circle. However, exercise can help reduce stress levels and improve mood. Doing regular exercise is also a chance to escape from the pressures of everyday life and socialise. By using up energy, you’re also helping yourself to a good night’s sleep. According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists, there are a whole range of benefits to keeping active including being more likely to feel good about yourself and being less likely to have problems with concentration and memory.
But exercise is boring
We’ve all used this excuse before - but
exercise really doesn’t have to be a chore. If jogging round the park isn’t your thing, why not pick an activity that you enjoy or that you’ve always wanted to try? Dance classes, yoga, swimming, weight training, kick boxing, martial arts – the choice is yours. Why not check out the opening times of your local gym? You might find you can fit in a session before work. Or maybe you could go in your lunch hour? Pilates and yoga are recommended for helping combat stress. The Department of Health recommends that adults should do at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times week, so the trick is to do something you enjoy.

Depending on your individual requirements, there are also many complementary therapies that can help improve your wellbeing in general. Here are some of our favourites: Indian Head Massage This has relaxing massage has been practiced for over a thousand years and
includes the treatment of the shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. It is said to relieve tension, fatigue, headaches and eyestrain by manipulating energy channels. Aromatherapy This alternative therapy combines the use of essential oils, naturally produced by plans and trees. Sometimes it’s combined with massage. Aromatherapy is believed to help improve physical and emotional wellbeing. Reflexology This intensive massage works on the idea that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body. It has been practiced for some 5000 years by the Egyptians and Chinese and is said to be a means of unblocking energy and promoting healing. Great for some serious relaxation if you’ve been on your feet all over Christmas! Always check with a healthcare professional before changing your diet or embarking on new exercise regimes or alternative therapies. Always seek professional advice!
New Year, New Career? Boston College is offering a range of part time adult courses starting in January 2018. December is traditionally the time to begin making plans for the new year, including New Year’s resolutions. While losing weight and eating more healthily might be at the top of most lists, you might also include items such as “learn new skills” or “start a new career”. Boston College’s

n the last 10 years, the yoga offering in Spalding has improved enormously. When Studio Director Claire Thomas, returned to the area in 2007, there were only a couple of yoga teachers, offering a handful of classes, each week. Typically, this meant travelling some distance, to attend classes and considerably further to attend workshops and specialist courses. In the intervening years, awareness of the benefits of a regular yoga practice, have encouraged more and more people to give yoga a try. Along with the obvious improvement in strength and flexibility, recent research shows that yoga can be beneficial for many different health conditions, including low back pain, arthritis, high blood pressure and fibromyalgia… to name but a few! Yoga is also extremely helpful for people who want to improve their mental health. Research shows that yoga can help us to manage stress, anxiety and depression, along with other more debilitating mental health conditions. As one in three of us will experience poor mental health in our lifetime, it’s helpful to know positive techniques for improving our mental health, are readily available to us. As we move in to 2018, it’s great that Spalding now has a much more vibrant yoga offering. There are more yoga teachers, offering a whole range of different yoga styles, suitable for aspiring and experienced yoga students alike. Finding a style of yoga, and teacher that you connect
with, is key to maintaining a regular yoga practice, reaping those amazing health benefits!! Since 2007, Padma Yoga has continued to evolve, now offering a range of classes, short courses and weekend workshops at its studio on Broad Street. The studio has a small team of experienced teachers, who run weekly and monthly classes. This is complimented by visiting tutors, who travel from around the country, sharing specialist knowledge and understanding of yoga and all that it has to offer. These workshops are regularly attended by yoga students and teachers from the surrounding counties! The one thing most people will tell you, is that Padma Yoga has a great sense of community. The fabulous studio space is the home of this community. The teachers and students are the beating heart. Lifelong friends are made there and there’s lots of laughter!! The current British Standards require that domestic electrical systems are inspected within ten years, or sooner. The age old question of should you stay or should you go? As families grow we all think of moving to a new home but is it really necessary? Before you pack up boxes and moving it’s worth considering making improvements to your home rather than moving.
M
oving home when you have a growing family to feed, clothe and support can be an expensive task - buying a property for £275,000 will cost you £3,750 in Stamp Duty alone, that’s without solicitor fees, removal costs and any other things that crop up along the way. The area you wish to live in is often one of the most important factors when moving, so if you like where you live it is definitely worth seeing if you can work with your existing property to meet your needs. If it’s an extra bathroom you are after, may be you can take some room from a larger bedroom or put a sink in the current bedrooms? Have you thought about having a separate the bath from the shower so several people can use it at the same time (if that works for you and your family!). For several thousand pounds you could easily fund an extra shower and loo and it will probably add value to your home too, improving the equity levels and in some cases this may even mean getting a better mortgage deal in the future! Extra rooms can be added and put in
the garden, over a garage, or at the back of your home if you have the space for less than £10,000 so it’s worth considering

It’s always a good idea to obtain details of all alterations in writing in the form of a contract so there can be no misunderstandings. In particular, I’d advise that you discuss the timescales that each alteration requires as these could affect your daily routines - e.g. electricity and water disconnections, or having to book time off work. Finally, ensure you allow plenty of time to think carefully about what changes you want to make - your new design needs to meet your exact requirements to fit in with your life. If you do decide to move, you need to try and make the home as easy to clear up and clean as possible. You may only get 30 minutes notice for a viewing, or if you are out during the day and the agent wants to show someone round, the place needs to be really tidy every time you step out the door. It can
be tough with busy lives but it’s worth the effort if it means you can sell your home as quickly as possible and for the best price. If you are anything like me, I watch lots of house programmes and the one piece of advice they all give when selling a property is to: Declutter! We all accumulate lots of stuff - toys to games, DVDs and CDs. It’s now time to box up what’s not required to show off the real space available in your home. Remember, most people can’t see past your furnishings and decor, so you have to make the effort to do it for them. Have your rooms lost their purpose? One thing which happens when you have a busy lifestyle is rooms tend to become multifunctional. Dining rooms double up as offices, hallways a space for the bike, the spare room becomes a ‘dumping ground’. That’s fair enough when you are living there, but if you are selling, every room must have a clear purpose. Box rooms need to be offices that can ideally be turned into a bedroom in an instant if required. If rooms are big enough to have a double bed, make sure they do, or

prospective home hunters will just believe that the room can only fit a single bed. The last thing any child or teenager wants to do is tidy up regularly - unless you are very lucky! So make this as easy as possible. Easy and temporary storage is helpful so things can literally be ‘chucked in’ and put under beds, in cupboards, run up to the loft if you have easy access. Moving the family is tough. So try to make the process as straightforward as possible – from experience it can be worth investing in removal company’s packing service, your home remains as is right up until the day before moving and as they do all the lifting. You are not shattered when you arrive at your new home so you tend to unpack more quickly and get back to normal life. Many even offer an unpacking service too but for me, I like to put things where I want them to go from the start. Have you thought about part exchange if you are trading up? And especially if you are buying a brand new home as you may get a good deal. Alternatively, if you have found ‘the house of your dreams’ and you can afford to do so, think about renting the one you currently own to buy a new one and then you can sell when you are ready as holding chains together can be a deal breaker – however be aware second home ownership will increase the stamp duty rate you pay. Before you make a decision either way, look at all your options, speak to builders for quotes and estate agents to see what property is available in your budget as well as how quickly they would expect your property to sell.

Funeral announcement It is customary for individuals to announce the death of their loved ones (known as an obituary notice) in a national or local newspaper. Most funerals are open to the public in the UK, unless the family has requested a private, intimate funeral with immediate friends and family only.
Black clothing It is traditional to wear black, smart clothing to a funeral. Men often choose to wear suits. Black has long been the colour associated with mourning, as it has connotations of being respectful. he letters ‘G’ and ‘T’ are used far too often on cars. And, yes, I’m referring to a grand tourer rather than a gin and tonic. Some automakers think that by sticking a ‘GT’ badge on the boot lid it makes their product instantly irresistible. Many are wrong about that. But McLaren isn’t. Indeed, the 570GT is so far from wrong, it’s untrue. McLaren’s 570GT is one of the best cars the British firm makes and it’s undeniably the most multitalented sports car, too. You can probably tell I was utterly blown away with the 570GT when I tested it on British bitumen recently. Fundamentally, McLaren has taken the awesome 570S and has injected it with an extra dose of civility. The result is the 570GT – a machine that’s as refined as possible without swapping for a smaller power unit and additional seats. The 570GT even looks like the 570S, but there are some major differences between the models. The latter’s flying buttresses have been replaced by curved bodywork that comprises a glass hatch. There’s a respectable 220-litres of load space under there, meaning the 570GT has a genuine practical edge to it. The car also has a glass roof that makes the cabin airy and full of mood-enhancing light. The engine, normally on display in the McLaren 570S, is tastefully concealed under a leather floor in the 570GT. While, inside, the car gets extra soundproofing, soft-close doors and electric heated seats. If that’s not enough to start justifying those letters ‘G’ and ‘T’, the 570GT is equipped with a more hushed exhaust system and softer suspension. The steering is also milder than the 570S’. These changes make the McLaren 570GT a car you could use every day. The ride is pliable enough to make our pothole-ridden roads bearable, and

FAST FACTS (McLaren 570GT as tested ) motorway cruising din is subdued enough so that your ears don’t bleed. But, just because you could use the GT on a daily basis doesn’t mean this is a lacklustre McLaren. Oh no. In every other way, the 570GT does everything else a full-fat McLaren does. And, most importantly, it looks one of the meanest, sexiest cars out there. It’s a major head-turner, that’s for sure. With just a quick stab of the 570GT’s starter button, the twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 lump barks into life. Depress the gas pedal and the increase of velocity is hard-hitting, due to the 570 horses under the lid. And snapping up and down the cogs via the paddlemounted gears-shifters is a real smile-inducer. Zero to 62mph is done in an insanely rapid 3.4 seconds, while the top speed is a licence-losing 204mph. Regardless of the additional luxuries added to the GT, this McLaren’s cabin stays broadly the same as in the 570S’. It’s a work of genius in contemporary sports car interior design and a long way from the chaotic buttonfest of the Ferrari 488 or the unemotional ambience in Porsche’s 911 Turbo. You sit near to the ground but erect in the 570GT, so visibility is very good. And, as mentioned earlier, it’s comfortable enough to be used as a real-world form of transport.
